Lois finding out Bruce's secret identity and using/abusing his expertise on crime and weird combat shit to ask him questions for background on random pieces she's assigned to.
"Hey hotshot. Quick question. Hypothetically, can you, or can you not, die from a punch to the throat."
"Hello, Lois. Nice to hear from you again."
"No, I don't think you heard me. Throat punching. Is that a thing?"
"A thing?"
"Can someone die if you punch them hard enough in the throat? Google says maybe."
"Looking it up on Google. That's a new low for you, isn't it?"
"The new low for me was thinking you'd take this conversation seriously. I need a yes or no answer, Bruce."
"..."
"I can hear you typing. Are you Googling it now?"
"Give me some parameters."
"I don't know, hard? If you punched them hard enough, could they die?"
"There would be some edema present, subsequent to blunt force trauma. Shortness of breath. Other delayed sequelae."
"So no?"
"Maybe."
"What if I punched them really really hard? Would it be instantaneous then?"
"Lois, I'm getting the impression this isn't much of a hypothetical anymore."
"Completely unrelated follow up question: can you break someone's neck if you punch them hard enough?"
"Lois."
"I just need a yes or no on this one. Promise."
"Lois."
"I'm not asking if you've ever done it, I'm asking if it's possible."
"...What does Google say?"
"To suck my dick, I'm on deadline."
"That new AI is testy."
"Are you going to be like this every time I call you?"
"Like this?"
"Yes or no answer, Bruce. Five seconds. I know you're holding it back. You're dying to tell me."
"I'm dying to tell you something you can Google?"
(five minutes later, Bruce's phone buzzes with a screenshot of a text conversation between Lois and a very confused Clark whose only response was "...I think so??? ask B")
Lois: final chance, yes or no
Bruce: Running to Clark is a choice.
Lois: oh god, you text with periods too?
Bruce: Yes.
Lois: yes throat punching or yes you text with periods?
Lois: Bruce
Lois: BRUCE

Here Are My Top 10 Favourite Ants
(Updated due to public outcry and political pressure.)
No. 10 - Yellow Crazy Ants
These guys are on a list of "one hundred of the world's worst invasive species" formulated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), having invaded ecosystems from Hawaii to the Seychelles.
But don't hate just because they are awesome at establishing themselves in a new habitat due to their aggression toward other ant species, lack of aggression toward members of their own species, efficient recruitment, and large colony size. Respect the hustle!
No. 9 - Paraponera Clavata
Also known as the "bullet ant," "the one wounding deeply," or "24-hour ant", referring to the full day of pain that follows being stung.
This ant's sting currently ranks the highest of all insect stings on Justin O. Schmidt's informal sting pain index, at 4.0+. Some victims compared the pain to that of being shot, (hence the nickname,) with "waves of burning, throbbing, all-consuming pain that continues unabated for up to 24 hours."
Lymphadenopathy, edema, tachycardia, and fresh blood appearing in human victim feces are common symptoms from even a single sting.
Un-fuck-with-able.
No. 8 - Honeypot Ants
The name honeypot ant comes from the peculiar development of replete workers, whose abdomens become so swollen with food that they are used by the rest of the colony as living food storage. They are "drained" during famine, usually the wintertime, to sustain the colony, leaving them as "flaccid depletes."
Disgusting. 10/10
When a replete worker fills with food, a portion of her digestive tract swells and displaces other abdominal organs. It can expand about four to five times its normal linear dimension when they are fully engorged with food.
I can relate. I have eaten pasta in such quantities to displace my own organs many times.
No. 7 - Red Imported Fire Ants
Though South American in origin, the red imported fire ant has been accidentally introduced to many other parts of the world.
More than 14 million people are stung by them in the United States annually. Most victims experience intense burning and swelling, followed by the formation of sterile pustules, which may remain for several days. Up to 6% of people may suffer from anaphylaxis. More than 80 deaths have been recorded from red imported fire ant attacks.
These ants thrive in urban areas. Nests can be built under pavements and foundations. This means not only can they damage or destroy individual structures, but red imported fire ants can have an affect on broader infrastructure, damaging land, business and property values. In agriculture, they can damage crops and machinery, and threaten pastures. They also pose a threat to animals and livestock, capable of inflicting serious injury or death, especially on young, weak, or sick animals.
With annual damages estimated in the billions of dollars, these ants are considered the second worst thing to arrive on North American soil since 1492.
No. 6 - Black Garden Ants
When building their colony, these ants will structure it so as to inhibit the transmission of different contagions. Different communities within the colony are segregated by a limited number of connective nodes, allowing for greater protection of vulnerable hive members, such as larvae and pupae.
A trait I could only wish other species performed so well.
No. 5 - Pharaoh Ants
These ants utilize three types of pheromones. One is a long-lasting attractive chemical that is used to build a trail network. It remains detectable even if the ants do not use the trail for several days.
The second pheromone is also attractive, but will decay to imperceptible amounts in a matter of minutes without reapplication. This pheromone is useful in marking food sources as these are unpredictable and liable to change quickly, so not worth the longer-lasting pheremone.
The third pheromone is a repellant. If an individual finds an unprofitable area with little food or significant danger, it will release this repellant pheromone, which will warn others and cause them to look elsewhere. While positive pheromones indicating lucrative foraging sites are very common in social insects, the pharaoh ant's negative pheromone is highly unusual and pharaoh ants were the first species found to employ such a thing.
No. 4 - Argentine Ant
This species is like the Mr. Worldwide of ants. It has established itself in every continent except Antarctica (including many oceanic islands.)
It even has "supercolonies" that extend across hundreds or thousands of kilometers, first reported in California in 2000, then in Europe in 2002, Japan in 2009, and Australia in 2010.
Several subsequent studies used genetic, behavioral, and chemical analyses to show that supercolonies on separate continents actually represent a single global supercolony.
The researchers stated that the "enormous extent of this population is paralleled only by human society."
How can you not admire (and fear) the ambition and the achievement?
No. 3 - Leafcutter Ants

"Leafcutter ants" is a bit of an umbrella term, as it consists of over 45 ant species, but this gang is just so remarkable. Next to humans, leafcutter ants form some of the largest and most complex animal societies on Earth. They are known for their advanced agricultural practices. These ants are not merely foragers but skilled farmers, cultivating their own food by collecting specific kinds of leaf matter in order to produce specialized fungi in their nests.
No. 2 - Formica Fusca
These ants, (sometimes called silky ants or dusky ants,) are fast to learn, and only a single presentation of stimulus is enough for them to form a genuine long-term memory. This formed memory is also resistant to extinction.
Ants of this species can also detect volatile organic compounds emitted by cancer cells. After a 3-trial conditioning, they can differentiate cancer cell lines from healthy ones. They can also differentiate between at least two different cancerous cell lines.
A similar ability to detect human tumours has been shown in more recent studies.
No. 1 - Weaver Ants
An arboreal species, (i.e. they live in trees,) weaver ants are known for their unique nest building behaviour where workers construct nests by weaving together leaves using larval silk. Colonies can be extremely large consisting of more than a hundred nests spanning numerous trees.
How they sew the leaves together is a remarkable feat of cooperation. Typically, dozens of ants will need to form a chain to first bridge a gap between two leaves, then pull them together so another team can hold them in position whilst yet more ants sew the gap together with silk. But adult ants can't make silk, so they have to use larvae to do it, picking the larvae up and using them like little pots of glue to spin a mat of silk between the two leaves. Altogether, a hundred ants might be involved in the same task. This is a pretty remarkable piece of evolution and a testament to the power of cooperation!

Horror Show: Peter Benton x Reader
Tagging: @kmc1989 @hobbit-habbit @cannonindeez
Summary: Your date with Peter is thrown off course when John Carter is brought into the ER.
Companion piece to:
Plastics - Peter has never had a high opinion of plastics surgeons.
The Right One - Peter makes a realisation about you when the two of you share a patient.

You don’t get that date with Peter.
You don’t get it because ten minutes before the end of your shift the both of you are paged downstairs to your very own horror show.
One of your own, stabbed in the back, his would be murderer a couple of minutes behind. It sounds like something out of a soap opera.
You recognise Carter almost immediately when you enter the Trauma Room and so does Peter, you can tell by the way his step falters behind you. The med student is laid out on the table, his eyes roving, his skin deathly pale as they attach him to the heart monitor. His voice is weak, desperate as he calls out for Crys.
That girl, she’s a mess. Blood is soaked into the white tank top she’s wearing, there’s a six inch gash across her left forearm. Her hand slips into his, grasping it tightly and his chin tips up towards her.
“Love…you…” He rasps.
And that’s when his vitals plummet, all hell breaking loose.
“Mina, we need you in Trauma Two!” Doug Ross shouts through the adjoining swing door. “We have a patient with severe burns and scalding injuries to his face, neck and chest, he’s circling the drain!”
You look to Peter and he nods his head.
“Go,” He says with that quiet assertiveness. “I’ve got Carter.”
The guy in Trauma Two, he’s long past circling the drain, he’s already sunk down into the depths of the pipes. You can tell from the lack of breath sounds when you crike him. His airways are too swollen shut from the burns, his lungs the victim of pulmonary edema, something that’s common with this type of injury.
“It’s time to call it.” You say, shaking your head. “He was already too far gone by the time he got here.”
Doug’s mouth sets into a grim line as he stares down at the patient. A crushed orbital socket, seared flesh that’s been torn away from the wound on the right side of his features. His skin is pink and shiny from the light scalding all over his face, neck, chest and shoulders.
“She hit him with a kettle didn’t she? Crys? She did it to protect herself?” You say and Doug glances up at you surprised. “I’ve seen it before with DV vics, sometimes something inside them snaps and they pick up the closest thing to them to defend themselves. You can tell from where his skin stuck to the metal, the fact the hot water cooled as it ran further down his body.”
You pause as you examine the injury.
“The police are gonna ask if his injuries are consistent with having hot water poured over his head and I’m going to tell them it’s more likely the lid came off when she hit him. Do you concur?”
You can tell from the look in his eyes that he understands what you’re asking him.
Are you going to back me up?
“Yeah.” He says, nodding his head. “I concur. I just hope this doesn’t fuck up that poor girl.”
“Yeah me too.” You say stripping off your gloves and putting on a fresh pair. “You good doing time of death? I’m gonna see if they need a second set of surgical hands next door.”
“Go.” Doug shoos you away with the back of his hand.
They’re already wheeling Carter out of the Trauma Room and towards the elevators when your hurtle through the doors. You fall into step alongside the gurney, your gaze meeting Peter’s over Carter’s unconscious form.
“You want me to scrub in?” You ask, pushing the button for the elevator.
“Please.” He says, his voice raw as he looks at Carter. “His kidney, it’s obliterated, the fucker twisted the knife…”
“I’ve worked nephrectomy reconstruction before.” You assure him as the elevator doors open and you help to roll Carter inside. “I can help with the tissue repair, minimising his scarring so that his recovery goes a lot smoother.”
“Thank you.” He says softly as the doors close behind you and the elevator starts to ascend to the Surgery floor. “You have no idea how much it means...”
“I do Peter.” You say kindly, already running through the procedure in your mind. “Trust me do.”
***
It’s a six hour surgery, that’s how long it takes to repair the damage to John Carter’s internal injuries. The kidney is completely destroyed, it’s blood supply had been pumping into his abdomen and chest cavity, his lungs soaking it up. He must have been in excruciating pain, lying there in the rain, drowning in his own blood.
The whole thing exhausts Peter, emotionally, physically. He holds himself together until he gets to the locker room and then his knees go out from underneath him, his ass landing heavily on the wooden bench that runs through the centre.
He can’t believe this happened, that the earnest kid he’s spent the last year teaching is now fighting for his life in one of the recovery rooms. He places his head in his hands, praying to God that Carter makes it.
He doesn’t hear the door open, he doesn’t even realise you’re in the room with him until you crouch down in front of him. Your palms graze the back of his hands before you gently draw them away from his features. His eyes sting as he looks at you, prickling in a way they haven’t since his mom died.
“It’s ok.” You whisper, your thumb chasing away the tear that leaks down his cheek. “He’s just had the two best surgeons in Chicago work on him, his scrappy little ass is gonna be up and around, annoying the hell out of you in no time.”
He laughs then and it’s a rich, warm sound that feels like an exhale as it leaves his body. The edges of your mouth tip up into a smile and in that moment Peter doesn’t think he’s ever seen anything quite so beautiful.
“Mina.” He says softly. “I really did want to take you on that date.”
“I know.” You tell him, pulling away. “Maybe it’s something we can revisit it after Carter wakes up.”
“Yeah.” He says, rubbing his palms together, one over the other. “Yeah I think we should.”

Some Allergy Vocabulary
for your next poem/story
Allergic crease - A crease or pale line that develops across the lower part of the nose because of frequent upward wiping of the nose.
Angioedema - (or edema) Swelling
Dander - Material that is shed from the body of humans and animals that have fur, hair, or feathers.
Dust mite - A small mite invisible to the naked eye. Dust mites are widely distributed in homes and dust mite allergy is a major cause of asthma and allergic rhinitis (hay fever).
Elemental diet - A diet of predigested liquid containing amino acids, vitamins, minerals, electrolytes, and glucose.
Eosinophils - Cells that circulate in the blood. They attack tissues at the site of an allergic reaction causing damage.
Erythema - Reddening of the skin.
Macrophages - Scavengers whose job is to engulf or eat up infecting germs and even infected cells. Macrophages also help to overcome infection by secreting signals that help activate other cell types to fight against infections.
Monocytes - Cells that circulate in the blood and become macrophages in the tissues. These cells are very important in alerting the immune system about an infection.
Neutropenia - A condition that results when the body does not have enough neutrophils, an important white blood cell that fights infections. The lower your neutrophil count, the more vulnerable you are to infectious diseases.
Pollen count - (or a mold count) Is based on the measurement of the number of grains of pollen or mold spores in a cubic meter of the air. The higher the count, the greater the chance that people suffering from hay fever will experience symptoms when they are outdoors or exposed to outdoor air.
Pruritus - Itching
Urticaria - The medical word for hives, which are itchy, raised lumps that can vary in position from hour to hour or day to day.
Wheal - A raised whitish itchy lump, which occurs after skin prick test or after contact with an allergen and is a term also used to describe the individual lump seen in hives.
Wheeze - A whistling sound that can occur in the breathing tubes or airways. It is important to make your doctor aware of wheezing that reoccurs. Wheezing is often a symptom of asthma or COPD, but it may be related to temporary respiratory conditions such as pneumonia or bronchitis.

Wound Care
Ok so, take this with a BIG grain of salt, because I may be a medical doctor BUT you need to know how much wound care training we get in medical school: none. Zip. Zilch. There may be medical schools where you do, but mine wasn't a bozo factory and there was NO wound care training. Everything I know I learned from one of several sources: an intensive 2-day wound care course I did in residency (highly recommend), the local Home Health wound care nurse (highly recommend), a completely batshit insane old white male doctor who started our learning sessions by yelling Vietnam War stories at me (do not recommend), a hospital wound care nurse (highly recommend), and experience (oh god do not recommend).
The first thing you need to know is that wound healing varies dramatically across the course of a lifespan. Kids? Kids will heal. If they don't, get their ass to a pediatrician because there's something genetic going on. Young adults will heal. Middle-aged adults will heal. You know who doesn't heal for shit? The elderly, and people with severe illnesses, and people with uncontrolled type II diabetes.
Your body needs several things in order to heal. It needs macronutrients, so you need to be able to EAT protein, fat, and carbs. If you are on total parenteral nutrition, aka TPN, aka IV nutrition, you are going to be worse at healing. If you are starving yourself, you are going to be worse at healing. If your body is desperately funneling all the calories you take in to surviving your COPD or cancer, you are going to be worse at healing.
It also needs micronutrients. If your diet sucks, you won't heal. Take a multivitamin once in a while.
There are two CRITICAL skin components to healing: collagen and elastin. Guess what we stop making as we age. Promoting collagen isn't just good for "anti-aging," it's good for NOT ripping your skin apart. Taking oral collagen is probably bullshit because your body is going to have to disassemble it to get it across the intestinal membranes to absorb, but it's also harmless, and if your diet REALLY sucks, who knows. Give it a try. Collagen is made of amino acids; think protein.
Another absolutely crucial component is blood flow. As people age, they start to develop cholesterol plaques lining arteries that eventually pick up calcium deposits. This makes blood vessels less elastic, which is a problem, but eventually also blocks them off, which is a much bigger problem. If someone has the major blood flow to their feet decreased by 90% by arterial stenosis, they are not going to heal for shit AND their foot's gonna hurt.
One component of blood flow I hadn't thought about before going into medicine is fluid retention. The way your body works, blood exits the heart at a very high velocity, but slows to a crawl by the time it gets into capillaries, the smallest blood vessels in the body. Water is a very small molecule and can leave the blood vessel, especially if there aren't big, negatively-charged molecules like proteins like albumin in the blood vessels to hold the water there. And we're built for this--some water is supposed to leak out of our blood vessels when it gets to real little vessels. It gets taken back up by the lymphatic system and eventually dumped back into the bloodstream at the inferior vena cava. But if you aren't making albumin--for instance, in liver failure--you may leak a LOT of fluid into the tissue, so much that your legs get swollen, tight, the skin feeling woody and strange. This isn't fixable by drainage because the fluid is everywhere, not in a single pocket we can drain. And because it puts so much pressure on the tissues of the skin, it often results in ulcers. Congestive heart failure, liver failure, kidney failure--these are all common causes of severe edema, aka swelling due to fluid in the tissues. And they're a real bitch when it comes to wound care, because we have such limited resources for getting the fluid back out, which is a necessary first step to healing.
Pressure is another common cause of wounds. Pressure forces blood out of those little capillaries, so you starve the cells normally fed by those capillaries, and they die. It's called pressure necrosis. Very sick people who can't turn themselves over--people in the ICU, people in nursing homes--are especially prone to these wounds, as are people with limited sensation; pressure wounds are common in wheelchair users who have lost some feeling in the parts of their bodies that rub against those surfaces, or diabetics who don't notice a rock in their shoe.
So, if you're trying to treat wounds, the questions to ask are these:
Why did this wound happen?
-Was it pressure? If it's pressure, you have to offload the source of the pressure or else that wound will not heal. End of story. You can put the tears of a unicorn on that thing, if you don't offload the pressure it won't heal.
-Was it fluid? If it's fluid, you have get the fluid out of the issues or else it won't heal. You can sometimes do that with diuretics, medications that cause the body to dump water through the kidneys, but that's always threading a needle because you have to get someone to a state where they still have juuuuust enough fluid inside their blood vessels to keep their organs happy, while maintaining a very slight state of dehydration so the blood vessels suck water back in from the tissues. You can use compression stockings to squeeze fluid back into the vessels, but if they have arterial insufficiency and not just venous insufficiency, you can accidentally then cause pressure injury. The safest option is using gravity: prop the feet up above the level of the heart, wherever the heart is at, at that moment, and gravity will pull fluid back down out of the legs. Super boring though. Patients hate it. Not as much as they hate compression stockings.
-Was it a skin tear because the skin is very fragile? This is extremely common in the elderly, because they're not making collagen and elastin, necessary to repairing skin. If this is the case, make sure they're actually getting enough nutrition--as people get into their 80s and 90s, their appetites often change and diminish, especially if they're struggling with dementia. And think about just wrapping them in bubble wrap. Remove things with sharp edges from their environments. I have seen the WORST skin tears from solid wood or metal furniture with sharp edges. Get rid of throw rugs and other tripping hazards. I had somebody last week who tried to a clear a baby gate and damn near destroyed their artificial hip.
The next critical question: why isn't it healing?
-Are you getting enough nutrients? Both macro and micro?
-Are you elderly?
-Are you ill?
-Do you have a genetic disorder of collagen formation?
Fix why it's not healing and almost anything will heal. If you're diabetic, find a medication regimen that improves your sugars and stick to it. If you're anorexic, get treatment for your eating disorder. If you have congestive heart failure, work with your doctor on your fluid balance. Wear the damn pressure stockings. Prop up your feet.
If, after those two unskippable questions are done, you want to do something to the wound--apply a dressing, do a treatment--that's a whole other kettle of fish. I'll write that later. The dryer just sang me its little song and I need to put away the laundry.

CW: HEALTH ISSUES, NEAR DEATH, CAUTIONARY TALE
Small PSA because I'm not sure how well it will land
I saw a post regarding excitement over type 2 diabetes, and as a diabetic, I wouldn't really wish it on anyone. Here's a little bit of my experience:
From years of uncontrolled blood sugars, I've ended up with permanent nerve damage in my fingers and toes. Too hot and too cold water is extremely painful and if it progresses, you cross into the territory of losing limbs or succumbing to infection.
I have retinopathy, meaning I'm at risk of losing my sight. At this point, I can't reverse the damage I've done to my body; only slow its progression.
January of 2022 I was hospitalized for a condition called Diabetic Keto Acidosis (DKA) which is a condition where high blood sugars lead to your body absorbing and breaking down your fat as a way to fuel the body. Your fat has something called ketones, which in high amounts will turn your blood acidic, causing dehydration, multiple organs failure, and cerebral edema (swelling of the brain) which can (and will if untreated) result in a VERY painful death.
Once again, this is from uncontrolled blood sugars. (brought on by a depressive episode where I stopped taking all medication for over a week). It started with chest pain and tightness. I was out with friends and called my gf at the time while driving an hour home, as I was beginning to feel Very Wrong™️ (spacey, hard to breathe, nauseous and tired).
I asked her if I should go to a hospital before following it up with how I wasn't sure if it was truly something wrong. I hadn't checked my blood sugars or taken insulin in over a week on top of having had cake and cookies in excessive amounts. She pushed me to go and I put the hospital I normally go to in my GPS. I was pretty out of it, and picked the wrong hospital, one without an ER. I decided to go home. As soon as I got home and sat on my couch, I passed out a few times while sitting up. At this point, my cat was crying at me in a way he hadn't before. I went to bed, hoping I'd be better when I woke up.
I woke up at about 3am with severe nausea. I vomited for hours. Scared, I called my best friend to take me to the ER. By the time she had me in her car, I was delirious. I was wheeled into the emergency room, and at this point, the details become foggy. I was out of it for 2 days, alternating between sleep and going from very small amounts of water, to being on a liquid diet. I stayed in the ICU for about 5 days, where I was told a bunch of things I still can't remember. But what I do remember is that I was TERRIFIED. I was dying, and if I hadn't gotten emergency care, I would've died a painful, and terrifying death.
In case you took the time to read, I wrote all this as a caution. This disease could either kill you, or cause lifelong damage to your body. Either way you can guarantee a miserable existence without the proper care. It didn't feel very hot, sexy, or cool to experience what I did. And I hope no one in this community will have to experience it too.
Please be safe

This hen is the likely the source of infection from what we have narrowed down. She was from a show breeder who has an NPIP flock. Mareks is highly contagious so perhaps her flock got it from a show. The white pullet behind her is actually the 2nd hen who died likely because her vaccine didn't protect her from getting infected by her broody.
Even before this i wasn't to fond of this hens breeding, her crest is huge and would imeped her vision greatly (her crest and beard is already trimmed back in the picture). Her feet were so thickly feathered she didn't really walk well, just kind of waddled everywhere. She also had pretty severe edema in her heart which was unrelated to the Mareks.
Show type silkies tend to be more susceptible to Mareks due to extreme breeding in my opinion

Shock
SHOCK! Everyone loves writing about it, so we're gonna talk about it.
What is shock? Shock is a condition in which the blood flow in your body is no longer able to sustain the function of critical organs. We call this hypoperfusion. Blood carries a lot of stuff, but most importantly, it carries oxygen. When your tissues don't have oxygen, they're hypoxic. If they're hypoxic for long enough, they die.
What does shock look like? The patient might have hypotension, syncope (fainting), chest pain, abdominal pain, cool fingers/toes, shortness of breath, and/or altered mental status (I know you guys love that last one, lol).
What are the stages of shock? Trigger Insult -> Compensated Shock -> Uncompensated Shock -> Irreversible Shock (organ failure) -> Death
Not all of those stages are obvious in every patient, but that is the general progression. So, what does that all mean? It means that first, something is going to happen (trigger insult). This could be trauma, sepsis, anaphylaxis, heart attack, etc. Something has gone wrong with the normal blood circulation (we'll talk about what in a moment).
Next, the body will compensate to maintain perfusion and keep blood pressure normal. This can cause an increase in heart rate, constriction of blood vessels, rapid breathing, stress, and cool extremities.
When the body can no longer compensate, shit goes wrong. Mechanisms are failing, blood pressure is falling, and the organs are in dysfunction. You may see confusion, syncope, weak pulses, and metabolic acidosis (that's actually deadly but not as fun to write about, lmao).
Finally, when shit has gone very, very wrong, you get organ failure. If there were no interventions in the previous stages, the organs will begin to shut down. Heart rate, blood pressure, and respiratory rate will freefall. The patient will no longer respond to interventions. The nervous system's electrical activity will fade, and the patient will go into a comatose state. Then they die.
The Five Types of Shock
Distributive: this is from the dilation of vessels, which drops the blood pressure to unacceptable levels. This can be do to anaphylaxis, sepsis (bacterial infection), or adrenal crisis. One thing to note with this type is that the skin at the extremities will be warm, not cold.
Cardiogenic: the heart is not working correctly. This can be do to heart disease, heart attack, arrhythmia, etc. This leads to low cardiac output but constricted peripheral vessels. This may present with pulmonary edema.
Hypovolemic: this is from low blood volume. This can be due to hemorrhaging, severe vomiting (or, on the other end, pissing out your butt), or severe dehydration. The patient will have cold extremities and may be pale. Usually, this type of shock is easy to spot because there's either blood everywhere or some other type of trauma causing internal bleeding.
Neurogenic: this is due to nervous system failure from injury to the brain or spinal cord. Note that this type of shock does not have a fast heart rate. Since the autonomic nervous system is non-functioning, there is no response mounted to the shock.
Obstructive: this is a blockage of circulation to the heart. There are two types, pulmonary and structural. Pulmonary is due to increased pulmonary circulation resistance. This can be due to a tension pneumothorax or a collapsed lung. Structural is due to resistance in the heart, such as with cardiac tamponade (fluid in the pericardial space). This case of shock requires you to realized that there is clinically a right and left heart, as the blockage of either side will result in vastly different symptoms and require different treatment.
How do you treat shock? For treatment, it really depends on the type of shock. For all types (except that caused by pulmonary edema), you should give the patient a saline IV to increase blood pressure and volume. Then, it really depends on the case as to what you do next. For distributive shock, you want to give the patient vasoconstrictors (like norepinephrine or vasopressin). For cardiogenic shock, give them inotropes (to increase cardiac output). For hypovolemic shock, fix whatever was torn up and give them IV fluids. For neurogenic shock, you can give fluids and vasoconstrictors. For obstructive, fix whatever is wrong, like breaking a clot or draining the pleural cavity.
Okay, I hope this is a good guide. I think hypovolemic and distributive shock would probably be the most fun to write about, but I mean you could probably make any of these pretty interesting (except obstructive, maybe). Let me know if you have any questions in the notes (is that what the reply thing is?? or are they called comments??)

An interesting, variant specific analysis of common dermatological issues following a covid infection.
Abstract Almost 20% of patients affected by COVID‑19 develop dermatological symptoms after recovery. This condition is termed as post‑COVID‑19 syndrome and is characterized by a state of hyperinflammation, as well as deregulations in the humoral response of CD8+ T‑cells. Since there is no specific treatment for these injuries, the treatment of choice depends on the symptoms; thus, it is essential to provide a description of the type and nature of the injuries presented. In the present study, a systemic review was performed using the PICO strategy in the repositories of PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase and Scopus using the key words ‘POST‑COVID and skin symptoms’. A total of 44 studies were included in the present systematic review. In these studies, the majority of subjects exhibited non‑specific symptoms, commonly referred to as ‘skin rash’, affecting up to 27.4% of the population. According to the studies, a maximum prevalence of 50% of alopecia was observed among the affected subjects. Additionally, several studies reported the prevalence of other lesions, including pruritus (25%), subcutaneous nodules (12%), dermatitis (9.4%), edema (9%) and pigmentation changes (6%). Dermatological lesions associated with autoimmunity were also identified, with these findings being more pronounced among females and in patients with a history of severe COVID‑19. Finally, several studies investigated the presence of autoantibodies, revealing a maximum prevalence of 41% for autoantibodies targeting the epidermis. Specifically, the prevalence was 12.9% for the Wuhan variant, 5.7% for the Alpha variant and 5% for the Delta variant. Although mostly benign, post‑COVID‑19 syndrome produces marked dermatological alterations for hair health, mainly among females. This, together with the development of lesions with an autoimmune component, constitutes an emerging therapeutic need.

is it effective to use Furosemide for post-spay seroma in dogs or cats?
GV here.
No. Furosemide is a powerful diuretic designed to reduce overall total blood volume and/or induce urine production in urgent or emergent scenarios such as congestive heart failure, certain types of shock including anaphylactic, certain severe edemas, and oliguric or anuric kidney failure. It's never the *only* thing you do, either. In each of those scenarios you would be throwing a book of treatments at the animal. Also, furosemide runs the risk of being quite damaging to the kidneys even when used properly and is not designed to be used to stop normal, non-life-threatening inflammatory processes. Just getting rid of the fluid in a post-spay/post-surgical seroma is not going to get rid of any specific discomfort and definitely not a life-threatening problem, nor will it address the underlying issue (typically a combination of the body's reaction to the suture + excessive movement +/- infection).

Using CDC/FDA-defined safety thresholds (PRR ≥ 2), they found statistically significant breaches for 47 cognitive, 28 general psychiatric, and 11 suicide/homicide-related events — with proportional reporting ratios (PRRs) up to 3,060 times higher than comparator vaccines.
When grouped by clinical category, compared to influenza vaccination, the COVID-19 mRNA injections were associated with:
A 118-fold increase in reports of cognitive adverse events (PRR: 118; 95% CI: 87.2–160; p < 0.0001; Z = 30.9)
A 115-fold increase in general psychiatric conditions (PRR: 115; 95% CI: 85.1–156; p < 0.0001; Z = 30.8)
An 80-fold increase in suicidal and homicidal outcomes (PRR: 80.1; 95% CI: 57.3–112; p < 0.0001; Z = 25.7)
