I know this is a weird question, but what exactly do the bigger sharks eat in your world? I know Rocky is a Great Hammerhead and they (as a species) are known to be other shark eaters, so is there like an alternative meat that they eat, or do they just stick to stingrays and bony fish?
That's a curious question, and I was quite inspired when I thought about how to answer it!✨
In the past, they used to hunt wild fish, but with the advent of the modern age, they stopped fishing and adapted entirely to the practice of pisciculture. 🐟✨
Tumblr media
In a hypothetical future on this Earth, fish are incredibly larger and more abundant. Some have been domesticated, just as we humans used to do, and are treated with deep respect.
In order not to cover too much, I've focused only on the fish that have been domesticated for consumption in the region where my main characters live, called "Santa Maré".
Tumblr media
They are the descendants of species we know, such as Arapaima, Tuna, Tilapia, Sardines, Anchovies, Salmon, Cod, Octopus, Squid, Crab and Shrimp.
These are some of the typical dishes of the Santa Maré region, most of which are variations on recipes handed down from the ancient human presence that marked this region a thousand years ago. Lots of seafood-based dishes with a spicy touch! 🌶️✨
Tumblr media
Some of these dishes were inspired by real recipes from my country such as: Casquinha de Siri, Tuna Poke, Vatapá, Bobó de Camarão, Moqueca de Peixe, Octopus Rice, Acarajé, Cod Baked in Olive Oil, Cod Croquettes and the sweet dessert called Manjar, which is a coconut pudding with plum syrup!
Things like corn, wheat and other fruits, vegetables and animals domesticated by humans disappeared millions of years ago. So I wondered what other options they could find to use as the main ingredients.
Tumblr media
Algae Flour, Palm Oil, Palm Butter, Coconut Milk, Palm Sugar, Domesticated Snake Eggs, Sea Salt. In the Santa Maré region, palm is widely used as the main ingredient, while other regions may prefer ingredients based on algae, for example.
Some domesticated fruits and vegetables are only used to season and enhance the flavor of dishes, but they don't make much difference to their bodies. They eat several meals a day, and food is plentiful in this civilization, so the great sharks wouldn't need to devour their friends to satisfy their hunger, hehe.
And speaking of Roberto/Rocky, my great hammerhead shark, if he gets really hungry, a Tuna Poke is enough to make him very happy and satiated! 🍣✨

Desserts in China
There's quite a large variety of treats and desserts in China (more than you can imagine), so here are some of the most common ones!
Almond jelly/tofu - 杏仁豆腐 - xìngréndòufu Despite the name, almond jelly doesn't actually have almonds in it. Almond jelly is made from gelatin and almond milk, although some recepies use dairy milk instead.
Glutinous rice balls - 汤圆 - tāngyuán These rice balls are made from glutinous rice balls with a sweet filling, such as red bean paste (a pretty popular filling in desserts, I've been fooled more than once when purchasing what I assumed to be a chocolate filled pastry).
Red bean buns - 豆沙包 - dòushābāo One of my favorite desserts so far. These are steamed buns with a sweet red bean paste filling that I'd definitely recommend.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Egg custard bun - 流沙包 - liúshābāo A sweet and savory bun, with a lava-like egg yolk filling. A pretty interesting dessert, as it's both sweet and savory.
Pumpkin cake - 南瓜饼 - nánguābǐng I haven't tried this yet, but it definitely looks good. A fried and crunchy cake with a sweet filling such as red bean paste.
Eight treasure rice pudding - 八宝饭 -bābǎofàn This is a pretty popular dessert, especially during the Lunar New Year. It gets this name becase of the toppings, which are eight or more different types of dried fruits and nuts arranged on top of the sweet rice, with (once again) red bean paste.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Hawthorn stick/ Candied Haws/ Sugar coated haws/ Bingtanghulu - 冰糖葫芦 - bīngtánghúlu This treat has quite a few translations and you may have probably already seen it. This is basically candied fruit covered with a sweet, crunchy and sugary syrup. Traditionally, Hawthorn is used but other fruits such as grapes, strawberries and oranges are also popular options.
Sachima - 沙琪玛 - shāqímǎ I haven't tried this snack yet, but it looks quite fascinating. Sachima is made from fried batter stuck together with a sugary syrup, with an interesting texture.
Sesame balls - 芝麻球 - zhīmaqiú Similar to the rice glutinous balls, this treat is also made from glutinous rice flour with varying fillings including lotus seeds, mung bean and red beans, and sesame seeds.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Water chestnut cake A sweet pan-fried cake made from chinese water chestnut, with a unique semi-transparent appearance.
Wintermelon puff/ Wife cake/ Sweetheartcake - 老婆餅 - lǎopóbǐng This cake has many names, mainly because it has several different origin stories, each more fascinating than the next. This dessert is a flaky pastry with wintermelon, almond (not red bean this time!) paste and sesame filling.
Fortune cake - 发糕 - fāgāo Not a fortune cookie! This is a spongy steamed cupcake cake commonly made for the New Lunar Year celebrations and occasionally other events. They're usually a white-ish or brown-ish color, but they're often dyed bright colors to add extra festivity.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mooncake - 月饼 - yuèbǐng This is a pretty well-known dessert, commonly prepared for the Mid-Autumn Festival. Mooncakes are smallish steamd/fried (depends on the region) cakes with a sweet filling that can also sometimes have an egg yolk inside.
Osmanthus cake - 桂花糕 - guìhuāgāo This is a unique traditional pastry made from glutinous rice flour, honey and osmanthus. This cake has a really interesting texture, as it's quite dense but also airy in a way? I'd definitely recommend trying it, as it's not super sweet and goes really well with tea.

Hot Sauce and Rice (ln4 and cl16)
A/n - based off of 5 seconds of two different tiktoks i saw on insta reels. ik there are some reel haters out there but don't judge me, tiktok has been banned in my country since 2020.
Warnings - just some fluff with these two 'kitchen nuisances'. not very long, i just had to get this out of my system. like two bad words, two suggestive comments, not proofread.
Happy reading🩵

Hot Sauce
Before she met Lando, he was the type of guy who lived with one of every utensil in the house. Though now after having been with his girlfriend for a while, things have changed. Laundry is done properly, he learned how to handwash his white clothes and always cleans the lint filter from the dryer.
She had been scrolling through reels for hours, bored out of her mind, but had nothing better to do to pass the time. That's when she came across a new trend, seeing if your partner knew how to clean hot sauce off of the kitchen counter.
Knowing her boyfriend, she pulled herself out of bed and made her way to her boyfriend, the subject of yet another tiktok trend. "Landoo" she yelled while trying to find him, "I need you for something."
Lando, who was sitting in the living room just sighed. He knew what that yell meant. His girlfriend entered the room and stood in front of him. He said her name, "I'm not doing this" "Oh, come on, baby" she whined.
"Nuh-uh. Last time I did a tiktok trend with you my face was stained red for a week. Everyone called me tomato." She let out a small giggle at the reminder of what happened last time.
"This one isn't that bad." He gave her a look. "Please," she said with a face that he couldn't resist. His walls fell and he grumbled under his breath, "fine." She celebrated by grabbing his arm and dragging him into the kitchen. He whined out her name the entire way there.
She opened her camera, pressed the record button, and propped her phone up against a bottle. Lando stood there looking tired, rubbing one eye with his hand, the other in his hoodie pocket. He was really clueless on what she was planning on doing.
She took out the hot sauce, honey and the container with flour. She then proceeded to pour small globs of the hot sauce and honey on the counter and scattered a bit of the flour as well. She then stepped back and looked at him. He looked at her, "What?"
"Can you clean those up for me?"
He kept looking at her. "I guess you don't know how to clean up messes-" This was a trap, she knew he would fall for it. "Hey!" he said in mock offense, "I can clean up messes." She just shrugged and took a step back. The McLaren driver picked up the kitchen cloth and tried cleaning the hot sauce first, which went as smoothly as she knew it would (not smooth at all).
The mess just spread. "What the-" the tired look on Lando's face was swapped with confusion. He finally seemed wide awake. He tried cleaning it again with the same dirty cloth which only made it worse. "Whatever," he said under his breath and moved on to the honey hoping it would be easier. It was not.
His girlfriend stood behind him, covering her mouth with her hands trying to contain her laughter. Both of their faces were visible on the camera, meaning she could see his reaction to when the paper towel he took got stuck to the honey.
He tried picking the tissue up but was surprised when it came up with a hole in it and some of the paper stuck to the counter due to the honey. The woman was finding it harder and harder to keep her laughs quiet.
But it really became a challenge when instead of cleaning up the scattered flour with a dry towel, he added water thinking it would help. It very obviously did not. The flour turned into a sticky paste which was just as bad as the honey.
"Fuck it, I give up. How do people clean up these fucking messes." he threw his hands up in the air in exasperation. His girlfriend was nearly howling with laughter. "Baby how sleep deprived are you?" she asked him while hugging him from behind. "But how did- why did the flour turn into a paste?" he turned in her arms and looked at her.
"Maybe because you added water to a powder." She said with a teasing smile. "but ho- oh that makes sense." His face of realisation sent her into another fit of laughter, though this time the racer joined his girlfriend.
"Huh, this tiktok was not that bad."

Rice
She had a busy day ahead of her. A few online meetings and multiple errands to run. Her partner was home for the week, and she wanted to get as many errands out of the way as she could.
"Ange,"(angel) Charles peeked his head into their shared room where she was finishing up with her hair for the day. "Yea babe?" she replied while unplugging the straighter from the socket. "What are you cooking for dinner?" "Chicken, beans and rice."
He nodded, "What were you thinking for dessert?" She locked eyes with him in the mirror, her eyes sparkling with mischief, she said with a cheeky smile, "You know what I always want for dessert."
His eyes widened for a moment, "Aye, not that. You want cake or ice cream?" he tried to hide his smile, but his red cheeks betrayed how he really felt about what she said. "Ice cream. It's too hot for just cake." He nodded again. She got up to leave, and grabbed her bag, "I should be out for a few hours, but I'll try to get back before it gets too late." The couple shared a short kiss before she left.
A few hours had passed, and she was running late. She picked up her phone and sent Charles a text.
-I'm gonna be late, can you wash and set up the rice on the stove?
She got a reply within seconds.
-👍🏻
40 minutes later she entered the house, thinking that the rice would have been close to being done by then. The scene with which she was about to be greeted with when she entered the kitchen was not what she would have expected.
Charles was still washing the rice, with a toothbrush in one hand and a singular grain in the other. There was a very small pile of wet rice grains in the cooker and a dry pile in a bowl next to the sink. Her fiancé was hunched over the sink very focused on his task of washing the rice.
"Baby," she said with an amused smile. "Ange, you are home already?" his attention remained on the grain of rice as he ran it under the water, put it in the pile in the cooker, and picked up another grain from the bowl.
"Yes I am, baby what are you doing?" this caused him to look at her, still hunched over.
"Washing the rice like you said." He said it so innocently, it made her want to wrap him up in bubble wrap and keep him tucked away safely in her pocket.
"Cha, that's not how you wash rice." "It's not?" he looked at the grain he was cleaning. She could no longer take it and pulled him into a hug, a big smile plastered on his face. One hand was around his back while the other was threaded in his hair.
"Then how do you wash rice?" his voice was slightly muffled.
She kissed him with a smile on her face. After pulling apart she showed him how to wash rice and got it set up on the stove. Dinner was ready within an hour and was delicious, though dessert was even better.

Here's To Doing The Unexpected
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡
Summary: Christian tries to do the unexpected
Pairing: Christian Pulisic x Fem!Reader
Requested: Nope
Song Inspo: Vienna - Billy Joel
Warnings: small talk of pregnancy, husband!christian
Notes: i'm trying to clean out the drafts 🫣 it's small, it's not that great, but i didn't want to waffle and end up turning it into something i don't end up posting. anyway, here's something that isn't smut. feedback is always appreciated
♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡-----♡
"Who are you and what have you done with my husband?" You tease, the kitchen smelling unexpectedly good, with Christian at the counter, a dishcloth tossed over one shoulder, looking like he had stepped out of an episode of The Bear. His mouth mimes the lyrics to Luke Combs 'Forever After All,' as he crushes a glove of garlic under the blade of his knife. You didn't even know he knew how to do that.
You step further into the kitchen, his cheeks twitching at your hand unconsciously sliding across the small of his back as you come to stand on his other side to inspect what he was doing. There's a pot of homemade sauce simmering on the stovetop behind you, the rich smell of tomatoes perfuming the air, and before you were ingredients like eggs, flour and butter. The typical stuff you needed to make fresh pasta.
This certainly wasn't Christian usual level of cooking when it came to doing anything in the kitchen. Normally, it was quick and simple meals, the ones he knew he wouldn't burn, and sometimes went in a microwave. Or, it was making Rice Krispies buns with your baby cousins, leaving the counters covered in the melted chocolate and stray pieces of Rice Krispies that never made it into the mixing bowl.
"I'm amazed," you tease him some more, feeling his laughter ripple through his body as you rest your head against his arm.
"Amazed that I haven't burnt the place down?" Christian laughs as you mumble 'no comment' under your breath. He turns and tips his head, brushing his lips lightly against the top of your head. His hand comes down to touch your bump, soothing his thumb over your round belly like it was his secret way of saying hello to. "This move was all about trying new things, right?" He crushes another glove of garlic, sliding it off the knife with the side of his finger. "So, I'm trying to not burn the kitchen down."
"Oh." You look up through your eyelashes, catching your bottom lip between your teeth to trap the giggle that desperately wants to escape. "I thought you meant we would be trying new things in...you know...the..."
"Dirty girl," he shakes his head, talking over you as your voice trails off.
"Yeah," your hand drops to give his bum a cheeky pinch, "and you love me for it."
He sets the knife down, wiping his hand quickly on the end of the dishcloth, before turning to face you. He's left chasing your lips, your body jerking back as the smell of garlic still lingers on his fingers. His brows rise to meet his hairline. "What?" He laughs, finally caressing your face. His thumb traces the shape of your cheek and he dips his eyes to look into yours. "Can't I kiss my beautiful, glowing wife?"
"You can kiss your 'beautiful, glowing wife' - which dramatic much? - when you're fingers no longer smell of garlic." You scrunch your nose. "Seriously, how does it not bother you?"
"Because I'm not six months pregnant." He sneaks a kiss to your temple and takes a few steps over to the sink. "You know, you don't seem to complain when my fingers smell like you," he cheekily says over the sound of the tap, lathering his hands in lemon-scented soap. You roll your eyes, your cheeks flooding with warmth at his crude joke. "Though, it has been a while," he turns the tap off, "I think I might have forgotten what you smell like."
"What's the matter?" You tease him with a perfectly mischievous smile. "You got blue balls?"
"As a matter of fact, yes." He wraps his arms around you, landing a kiss against your jaw. "I miss touching you," he whispers, sliding his hands up and down your sides, dipping to kiss down the column of your neck, "I miss you touching me."
"Christian?" He hums, half acknowledging you, too distracted by the softness of your skin. "The sauce is boiling over."
His head snaps back, eyes widening as his homemade sauce boils over the side of the pot and sizzles as it hits the stovetop. "Shit!" He launches forward, taking the pan off the ring, trying to wipe up some of the spilt sauce before any more damage could be done. "Shit. Shit. Fuck-" You cover your nose as a slightly charred smell permeates the air and watch his shoulders drop. "So much for trying to do something nice."
"Hey-" You take short strides across the kitchen and wrap your arms around his middle. On instinct, he reaches for your hands, rubbing his thumb across the back of your wrist. "It's okay," you kiss the back of his shoulder and press your cheek against it, "you know I've never really been one to like grand gestures, anyway."
"I know." He tucks his head back, a show of disappointment in himself lingering in his eyes. "I just wanted to do something nice before Bubbles comes along."
You lift your head. "Bubbles?"
"It's nothing," he mumbles, "just something to call them whilst we wait to meet them."
"Bubbles," you repeat, taking a step back and shrugging your shoulders, "I like it; better than calling them 'Baby' all the time." A frown stretches across your lips, turning your head to look at the preparation he had already done. He really was trying to make this Valentine's Day special for both of you. "You know, I think we could still salvage this," you tell him, swinging your head back around to look at him.
He lifts his brows. "We can?"
You crane your head to look around him. "Maybe even that, too," you add, pointing to the pan.
"Uh, no," he shakes his head, "that is not possible." He nudges the pot back with his elbow. "I wouldn't even feed that to my worst enemy."
You wink and quickly kiss him on the cheek. "We'll see about that, baby."

(cw: mentions of losing a close family member)
König doesn’t really know how to cook.
Well, anything other than the basics… Most of his meals consist of rice, meat and some kind of vegetable. Or like a carton of eggs. And of course, he can warm up meals and cook pasta and put pesto on it. But working in the military his whole life, he never really had the need to learn to prepare something to eat other than those basics, because most of the meals were provided and he’ll eat any- and everything. When he’s on leave, he cycles through his staples and also orders a lot of take-out, just to satisfy the calorie intake he needs at his size.
His grandma used to cook for him, ever since he was a little boy and then when he returned to Austria as an adult, she always made sure to prepare his favourite meals. He hasn’t been back ever since her funeral, he tells me while he gets some ingredients out of the fridge. Eggs, milk and butter. He misses her and her cooking, but that’s just how it is in life. Flour from the pantry. Mixing it all together, eyeballing the measurements, and adding a pinch of salt.
She taught him how to make Palatschinken. Thin pancake or crepe-like sheets of dough that he apparently made too much of. Rolled up, filled with jam and powdered sugar on top.
“Pala- what?”, I ask, wanting him to teach me how to say the word properly.
“Pa-la-tschin-ke.”, he repeats, sounding the syllables out, and I imitate them, until he tells me that I’ve got it.
I sit at the cooking island in his kitchen, on one of the chairs, and watch him pour the thin dough into the hot buttered pan. It bubbles and sizzles as he swirls it around, until the whole bottom is covered. Waiting for it to be cooked from one side. He lifts the edges with a spatula to make sure. Then he looks at me, raising his brows, like ‘Look at me, look what I can do’, lifting the pan of the hob, holding it in front of his body.
Oh, oh, that won’t- He flips it with a rehearsed flick of his wrist, the thin pancake rotating in the air for just a moment, then landing in the pan again.
I coo, clapping excitedly. He bows jokingly, with the pan still in his hand.
When it’s done, he puts the Palatschinke on a plate, spreads apricot jam on the thin dough, rolls it up and then sprinkles powdered sugar over it, setting the sweet roll in front of me. Gesturing me to eat.
I dig in, cutting it, and the fluffy dough almost melts on my tongue, the sweet jam spreading in my mouth as I chew. God damn it, that’s good. Simple, but very tasty. I finish the first one in record time and he puts the next Palatschinke on my plate. I fill it myself, devouring that one as well. He starts to make more, stacking them on a separate plate.
“You wanna try to make one as well?”, he asks me then.
I nod excitedly and get up from the stool. He hands me the pan and the ladle, putting some more butter onto the hot teflon, and I add the dough. When it’s cooked through, I try to do the flip just like he did. The little crepe flops up a bit and then folds in on itself. I burst into laughter and he joins in. Well, that didn’t go as planned.
“Don’t worry, that happened to me a lot of times.”, he says, scrapping the dough into the bin. “We’ll try again.”
So, the same spiel again. Until the Palatschinke is ready to be flipped. He’s standing behind me, we’re both gripping the handle of the pan and he’s looking over my shoulder, coaching me through it.
“Mit Gefühl.”, he tells me. “Carefully, but with determination.”
“I wanted to flip this thing, not get a lecture on how to enter some-“, I quip, but I get cut off when he playfully pinches my butt cheek.
It makes me jump up a bit and I bat his hand away. “König!”, I yelp, with pretend indignation, but he only grins down at me.
“Come on, you can do it.”, he says, nudging the pan in my hand.
“On three. One, two, three!”, I count down and then we flip it, together. The piece of dough rotates in the air and lands in the pan again.
“First authentically self-made Palatschinke.”, he says, with joking solemnity, as he drops it onto my plate. I do the rest of the steps and then eat it as well.
He makes Palatschinke after Palatschinke, telling me some more about his grandma and the dishes she used to cook, until all of the dough is gone. I listen to him and eat a whole bunch of them until I’m so full, I feel like I’m gonna burst. He finishes the rest of the thin pancakes, decimating a whole stack of them with lots of jam and sugar.
“The rest we can cut into small strips and put into soup.”, he explains.
“Into soup?!”, I question what he just said.
“Yes, Frittatensuppe. It’s really delicious.”, he says like it’s a normal thing.
I shake my head. Those Austrians and their weird dishes.
If you wanna try and make your own Palatschinken like metalhead!könig and reader, I got a recipe for you! Enjoy! a/n: this is the start of a little series I'm doing for mh!k x reader because I have so many scenes (some already finished a while ago like this one) that don't have a certain place in the plot and are just sitting in my word document, left to rot, so i'm gonna post them as their own random scenes that are still connected to them! some of it is gonna be sfw comfort fluff like this one, some is gonna be nsfw - stay tuned <3 Wanna get to know them better? Heya folks n friends! Today on our LotR cooking series, we're going to be making something inspired by Mrs. Maggot, wife of Farmer Maggot. Originally we were going to do a cream of mushroom soup, but the idea of adding meat as a cheeky lil joke on their last names was too good to pass up. In my mind meat goes better with thin soups than creamy ones.
And thus Mrs. Maggots Meat 'N Mush Stew was born.
(As always you can find the cooking instructions and full ingredient list under the break-)
MY NAMES CROSS NOW LETS COOK LIKE ANIMALS
SO, “what goes in to Mrs. Maggots Meat 'N Mush Stew?” YOU MIGHT ASKFor the stew portion itself we're going to be using a hearty base, aiming for a layering of flavors. If you feel comfortable making a roux, feel free to do so, but I did not due to energy levels and thus the flour in this recipe is only used for searing the meat before its added to the pot.
Cubed beef
Flour
Peanut oil
Beef stock
Dried porcini mushrooms
Carrots, chopped
Onion, diced
Garlic, crushed
Scallion, chopped
Bay leaf
Salt and pepper
Ground red pepper
Cumin
Zatarins gumbo file
For the other mushrooms, were going to cook them separate and throw them in at the end (but they'll have friends to keep them company!!).
Cremini mushrooms, sliced
Half an onion
Carrots
Garlic
Salt and pepper
Thyme
Olive oil
This took about 4 hours in total. If you have a slow cooker itd probably be easier to use that, but as is isn't too bad either. I mostly worked on commission stuff in the kitchen in-between stirring. "The best food is the one you don't have to make, the second best food is the one you don't have to think while making."
AND, “what does Mrs. Maggots Meat 'N Mush Stew taste like?” YOU MIGHT ASK
HOT HOT HOT
Tastes like walking from the cold into the cramped but cozy bar your friend works at
Meat was so tender and juicy, melts in your mouth. Makes you cry
It wanst actually carmelization but the onions had a hint of tasting caramelized
Mushrooms- a strong umami flavor with a bit of smokeyness
Once you get that Perfect level of gumbo file, it just makes every other element stick out more
Like an energy booster for the ingredients
A spotlight on the bay leaf, and oils, and spices
. If you don't want to use beef, feel free to use vegetable stock instead and replace the cubes with strips of king oyster mushrooms. Exclude the flour but still cook them in the pan. . this isnt officially part of the recipe since im not sure itd be 'on theme', but feel free to start your rice cooker around the 3 hour mark so you can have some hot rice ready for serving as filler.

When I was looking through food and food mentions in LotR, Mrs.Maggot just stook out to me. 'Queen amongst farmers wives' is both really sweet and a fuckin killer description. What a legend. I wanted to do something based on her and our two options were either beer, bacon or raw mushrooms. Beer while very appealing is also not something you can whip up in a day, while raw mushrooms have a chance of killing my beloved readers. I don't want to talk about me and bacons sordid past.
And so as praise to this funky farmer women, may you add this stew to your collection of potpie, lasagna, and roast recipes.
Did i mention i started my first grease fire when making this? Yeah. Don't cover any empty greased pan even if your intent is to keep water from splashing into it.
Anyway, this recipe is a solid 10/10 (with 1 being food that makes one physically sick and 10 being food that gives one a lust for life again.) The partner has already made me pledge to cook it again hehehe
🐁 ORIGINAL RESIPPY TEXT BELOW 🐁
Ingredients:
2 lbs cubed beef
A little bit of flour to 'tumble' the meat in, in a bowl
Peanut oil to sear the beef, as needed
3 kilograms beef stock
28g dried porcini mushrooms
4 carrots, chopped
1 white onion, diced
4 cloves garlic, crushed
1 scallion branch, chopped
Salt and pepper to taste
Ground red pepper to taste
Cumin to taste
3 bay leafs
A pinch of Zatarins gumbo file
Ingredients… . . TWO:
1 lb cremini mushrooms
Half of a white onion, diced
1 carrot, chopped
2 cloves garlic, crushed
Salt, pepper, and thyme to taste
Olive oil as needed to pan-fry
Method:
Put the porcini mushrooms into a bowl, add enough warm water to cover. Give them roughly 20 minutes, or until softened and the waters turned color.
Cut the carrots, onion, and garlic.
Get a large pot with a lid, pour in your stock (or water and bouillon cubes). Pour in the porcinis and the mushroom water. Turn the burner to medium-high.
Add your bay leaves, carrots, onion, and garlic to the pot. Add extra salt if you'd like.
Tenderize and cut your beef into roughly 1 inch cubes.
In a small bowl, pour a handful of flour along with pepper, cumin, and ground red pepper. Mix until combined.
Lightly toss each cube of beef in the mixture, get a little coverage on each side.
Heat a frying pan to medium heat and add peanut oil. If using an electric stovetop it will take time to heat up.
Add some of your beef cubes to the pan, don't overcrowd it. Flip to check sides are a light brown with dark brown edges, its good for some pink/red to poke through.
Add beef cubes to the pot when done, careful of splashing.
Keep doing this in batches until all beef cubes are added.
Once the pot has reached a simmer, turn the heat down a few notches and cover.
Set a timer for 4 hours. Taste test every so often. Aim to stir the pot every 10-15 minutes.
(You can do steps 14-21 immediately or optionally wait a bit)
Rinse and dry your cremini mushrooms.
Slice them vertically. Cut the carrots, onion, and garlic.
In a frying pan on medium-low heat, add olive oil, carrots, and onion. Keep the vegetables moving! When they start to change texture, add your cremini mushrooms.
Bring the pan up to medium heat.
Once your mushrooms have cooked off the liquid inside, theyll start turning a deeper brown. Add the garlic. Keep! the! vegetables! Moving!
If the pan gets overcrowded, take some out and set it aside in a bowl. Smaller batches.
This process took roughly 15 minutes, but youll know its done once everything has a nice sear on it and the garlic is brown but not burnt. Add salt, pepper, and thyme to taste.
Set everything aside in a bowl.
Once the 4 hours are up the meat should be cooked all the way through and tender enough to pull apart. Strain the bay leaves out. Cut and add scallions. Add the bowl with cremini mushrooms.
Add a pinch of gumbo file to start, stir and taste test.

I COULD MURDER A CURRY... Well, at least commit a certain amount of violence on one.
In other words, I wanted something curry-ish the other day without taking much trouble over it, so I threw this together from what was in the cupboard, fridge and freezer.
(There was rather less than I expected. That's been fixed.)
When I discovered we had no lamb or chicken it ended up as unintended vegetarian, and can as easily become vegan; just leave out the ghee. If my result is anything to go by, all variations will taste great.
NB #1, there's no salt; the preserved lemon has plenty.
NB #2, metric measurements are correct, Imperial are approximate, but this whole recipe was pretty vague from start to finish, so wing it.
That's what I did. For instance, preserved lemon is Moroccan not Indian, yet it worked just fine.
Lemon and lime lentil curry
Ingredients
1 tablespoon ghee or coconut oil (I used a 50-50 combination)
2 onions peeled and chopped fine
2 tablespoon hot curry powder
1 tablespoon mild curry powder (or 1 hot / 2 mild if preferred)
6 cloves of garlic peeled and chopped fine
2 400g / 14oz tins chopped tomatoes in juice
1 400g / 14oz tin kidney beans, drained and rinsed
250 g / 1 cup red lentils
250 g / 1 cup each of red, green, and yellow peppers, sliced and coarsely chopped (optional; we had them in the freezer)
2 heaped tablespoons lime pickle, chopped fine (hot or mild as preferred; Patak brand is good. I used home-made hot)
2 heaped tablespoons preserved lemon, chopped fine (again, I used home-made) *
1 tablespoon garam masala
* If you can't source preserved lemons, use the zest and juice of at least one fresh lemon (two might be better). If you've only got bottled lemon juice, add 125ml / 1/2 cup of it when the tomatoes go in.
Method
Heat your preferred cooking fat in a pan (a wok is even better), add the chopped onions, and cook until soft and translucent. If desired, cook until starting to brown (this may take up to 45 minutes).
Push the onions to one side, allow the fat to flow into the centre of the pan, add the dry spices, combine well with the fat and cook for about five minutes.
Add the garlic and cook for a further five minutes.
Add the kidney beans and lentils to this mixture, stir well, add the peppers, lime pickle and preserved lemon, and stir again.
Add the chopped tomatoes, and one tomato-tin full of water. (Also add the lemon juice (and zest), if that's what you're using instead of preserved lemons.)
Stir well, turn the heat right down, cover, and simmer for about 30 to 45 minutes. (This is where I'd have added 2 cubed chicken breasts, if I'd had them).
Check occasionally to ensure nothing is sticking, adding a little water if required. Taste during this process, and adjust the seasoning. (Which means, if you're using fresh lemon or bottled lemon juice, this is when to add some salt.)
When the lentils are done (I like them a little al dente), sprinkle on 1 tablespoon garam masala, stir it in then serve.
Accompany with Basmati rice, or chapatis (flour tortillas / wraps will do just fine), or naan bread, or any combination of these. I did a mix of 1/3 brown Basmati / 2/3 white Basmati.
@dduane pointed out that what with the carbs, protein, dietary fibre etc., this is also quite healthy. That's an unexpected bonus for something I just thought was no trouble to make, tasted good...
And didn't involve committing even a minor felony, though a slice of apple tort to follow would have been nice... :->

Desi s/o making desi food for the Dorm Leaders
Requested by enbytomura (on AO3) Warnings- fem implied reader (but not really lol), food, fluff, brief mentions of dieting, bad dialogue courtesy of Jester
A short cute lil thing :) I hope this encourages y’all to try some indian food bc these are some very basic picks
Tumblr media
Riddle
Tumblr media
What you make him: Gulab Jamun
Rosewater?! In food?! He’s drooling already
The fluffy center, perfectly toasted outside, completely wrapped in a glaze of rose infused sugar syrup, Riddle is in heaven
He’s holding the spoon with his full, closed fist, elbows on the table, face covered in sugar syrup
His mom would be so upsetti spaghetti, but who cares lol
He’ll notice how messily he’s eating and just take a lil pause, and blushes super hard
Gives you a hug after eating, he’s very grateful
“Thank you so so much.”
Leona
What you make him: Lamb Biryani
He literally smells it from the kitchen and goes zoom
Man runs with purpose
Barrels in and asks for a plate (real respectful)
Tries so desperately not to show how deeply he just fell in love
Adores lamb above all, tender and practically falling off the bone, with the rice practically
soaking up spices, he won’t even get upset about the vegetables
Expect him to act like it was mediocre, but with the ferocity of his eating, you know better
“The lamb was good, don’t expect me to tell you again.”
Azul
I’m gonna jump off what the requester said abt pakoras
Our boy Azul loves loves loves pakoras
Especially paneer and potato-onion pakoras
With the paneer, he loves how soft and fluffy the soft cheese is, along with the crispy, spiced coating, his favorite sauce for those is the minty cilantro chutney, he’s so happy
With potato-onion, the far crispier of the two, with unraveling layers of red onion and thinly sliced potato wrapped up in the same spiced coating, he’ll eat that one with a tangy tamarind chutney
Literally feed this man please
“It’s my cheat day today, perhaps you could teach me to make what you fed me last week?”
Kalim
What you make him: Gol Gappa
Pani Puri, Gol Gappa, call it what you want, its good and I’m eating it
He probably grew up eating the best of the best, that probably included desi food
Rich people desi food, yknow
This makes him super excited to eat street food
Loves the fun aspect of eating Gol Guppa, definitely swallows in all in one go, reckless abandon for the win
Jamil is so happy for the two hours off he’s getting
Loves the sour and spicy cold water, along with the crunchy hallow flour puffs, definitely loads them up with potatoes
“Wonder if he could add a little more spice…”
Vil
What you make for him: Dal Makhani
Vil probably goes on a vegetarian diet at some point, because of his fondness of salad and smoothies, this didn’t bother him much, but the repetition gets him bored
So of course, you help out your man!
When he finally sits down to eat, his senses are flooded with joy
Loves it so much
The creamy, thick soup, speckled with lentils and beans, green basil and a swirl of white butter, along with a side of roti, or naan to eat it with, he’ll never forget it
One that def loves having desi food regularly, esp during diets he’ll lean back on spices to make his food taste better
He will definitely make you some german food as a thank you, like spaetzle or apple strudel
“Liebling, your cooking is spectacular.”
Idia
What you make for him: Chai with biscuits
He’s one of those people who forgets to eat during his game sessions
You get a little worried about your guy :(
Ortho assists you in procuring biscuits as you make chai
Idia is a little startled when you show up with a thermos and a cute little plate full of biscuits
He's so appreciative!!!
Walks with a little pep in his step for a while after (around his room ofc)
Tries to make it for you, with decent results (man is good at following written instruction)
“This is so good, do you want one of the biscuits?”
Malleus
What you make him: Kulfi
We know how much our boy loves ice cream
You know how much your boy loves ice cream
So you make him the objectively best kind of ice cream
Its trial and error at first, and malleus gets a little curious about the mystery project your working on
When you finally present it to him, he's absolutely elated!
His child of man! Made him something with love!
Absolutely adores it so much, literally devours it
The creamy ice cream on the stick, milky and sweet with a perfect texture, he’s falls in love even harder
Favorite flavor is malai, simplicity and richness is his favorite
“I absolutely adore you.”

Hey so I made this honey chili ginger chicken stuff yesterday and I want to eat about seven pounds of it because it's so fucking good so have a recipe:
Ingredients:
3 large chicken thighs, cubed
3 green onions finely sliced
1/3 cup of honey
2tbsp ginger paste
3tbsp Siracha sauce
8 garlic cloves, chopped
1tbsp cayenne pepper
2tbsp tamari
1 medium potato, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
cooking oil
a few tablespoons of flour
Heat the oil over medium temperature in a large pan and add the cubed chicken and the garlic to the pan. Brown the chicken while prepping the other ingredients. Once the chicken is lightly browned, stir a few 2-4 tablespoons of flour into the pan (enough to lightly coat the chicken but no sot much that it gets clumpy), then add honey, siracha, and tamari and mix, ensuring that there are no lumps of flour. Add the spices, then stir frequently and heat over medium until chicken is cooked. Mix in the potato and green onion, cover, and reduce the temperature. Cook on low for 40 minutes.
Serve it over rice.
This would 100% kick ass if you threw in some sugar snap peas or green bell pepper.

[ID: Five images; top left, a large blue canvas storage bin sits on my bed ready to be unpacked, while top right I show off all the elderly wire clothes hangers I'm disposing of. Center, a large lantern-like light fixture features an electric bulb, on top of which is a chunk of wax melting in a tray. Bottom left, my new surge protector with electric plugs and USB cords plugged in; bottom right, a very old power strip has been unplugged and is covered in dust and cat hair.]
Welcome to NaClYoHo Day 3, where we find out that Past Sam was an exceptionally thoughtful dude, while listening to How Did This Get Made's live "New York Ninja" episode that just aired.
I was dreading today's task, which was to do the summer-to-winter clothing changeover; when the weather turns cold in climates with actual seasonal change you pack away your lightweight clothes and get out the sweaters and such. But it turns out last year I was a fucking genius and not only did I pack all the winter clothes into one box so I don't even have to pull out the under-bed storage anymore, I even made a note in my running cleaning list to remind myself of the fact when it came time to do the changeover.
So all I had to do was pull the blue canvas bin out of the closet, unload it, and load in all the summer clothes. I didn't know if I'd have time to do anything else but it took like, 20 minutes, and that includes trying on all the clothes to make sure they fit. (I've dropped a few pounds since last winter.) So I also went through my closet, pulled out every shirt that either didn't fit or I don't like wearing, and purged a bunch of coat hangers. I'm trying to change over completely from wire hangers to plastic, the kind with the notches that you can hook things onto, although I'm thwarted at the moment by the fact that it's remarkably difficult to find them for sale.
What I DID get at Target is a snappy new "lantern" wax warmer, which is currently melting some scented wax in the hopes it will make my home smell nice. I also picked up a new surge protector that plugs in at the outlet, so now my heated pad and the extension cord for the movie projector are tidier, plus the charging cords for the bedside table are no longer plugged into a USB hub that itself is plugged into an ancient power strip that I've had since grad school. Farewell, gross firetrap!
I didn't get about 80% of what I went to Target for (they didn't have coat hangers, nishiki rice, or bread flour, and I forgot to look for snacky foods) but I got the things I really needed and I'm counting it as a "hardware store" trip on account of it. I didn't time the trip, but the non-shopping portion of the day's work took about an hour of a 90 minute podcast.
Disposable gloves used: Still only 1!
Trips to the hardware store: 2.

[ID: A large, shallow bowl filled with a bright yellow curd and golden brown pakora garnished with cilantro. A small bowl of jeera rice with green cardamom, cinnamon, bay leaf, and cilantro sits to the right. End ID.]
Vegan Punjabi kadhi pakora / ਪੰਜਾਬੀ ਕੜ੍ਹੀ ਪਕੌੜਾ
Kadhi is a comfort food popular in north and central India and southeast Pakistan. The base of the dish is spiced curd or buttermilk, to which chickpea flour, vegetable fritters, and spiced tadkas (temperings) are sometimes added. Unlike the sweeter, thinner, and unadorned variations to the south, Punjabi kadhi is slowly reduced to a thick, creamy consistency and studded with onion pakoras.
Recipe under the cut!
Patreon | Tip jar
For the pyaaz ke pakore (onion fritters):
1 cup besan (chickpea flour)
2 medium yellow onions, thinly sliced
1/2 tsp table salt
1/2 tsp mirchi (ground red chilis)
1/2 tsp ajwain (carom seeds)
A couple cups of a neutral oil, for frying
For the curd:
1 cup (220g) unflavored vegan yoghurt
1/2 cup (60g) besan
1/2 tsp amchur (dried mango powder; optional)
4 cups water
In Punjab, kadhi is often made with full-fat buttermilk, and sometimes with yoghurt. Vegan yoghurt (I used oat) will provide a similarly smooth, fatty, slightly sour base.
Adding less water to the curd mixture will allow it to cook down faster if you’re short on time; but a long, slow simmer is more typical with this dish.
For the kadhi:
2 Tbsp neutral oil
Pinch hing (asafoetida)
1 medium yellow onion, chopped
2-inch piece (20g) ginger, minced
4 cloves garlic, minced
2 green chilis, chopped
2 tsp cumin seeds (jeera)
1/4 tsp fenugreek seeds (methi)
1 tsp ground coriander
1/2 tsp mirchi (ground red chilis)
1/2 tsp ground turmeric
1/2 tsp garam masala
3/4 tsp table salt, or to taste
Mustard oil is typical, but any neutral oil (sunflower, canola, vegetable) will work.
For the tadka (optional):
1 Tbsp non-dairy margarine
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 dried red chili
1/2 tsp mirchi
Instructions:
1. Start the pakore. Cut onions in half through the root and lay cut-side down. Slice thinly vertically (perpendicular to the root) and then cut the root off. Whisk together other pakora ingredients (except for the oil) in a large bowl; add the onions and toss well to combine. Cover and set aside for 30 minutes to allow onions to release moisture.
2. Make the curd mixture. Whisk yoghurt and besan together in a large bowl. Add amchur (or substitute apple cider vinegar) if the yoghurt you are using is not particularly sour, to taste. Add water and whisk until a smooth mixture forms. Set aside.
3. Make the kadhi. Heat 2 Tbsp of a neutral oil in a large pot on medium-high. Fry fenugreek and cumin seeds for a few minutes until they are fragrant and popping into the air.
4. Add hing and cook for 30 seconds. Add onion, chili, and salt and saute for 3-4 minutes, until onion is translucent.
5. Add ginger and garlic and sauté for 30 seconds to a minute, until no longer raw-smelling. Add coriander, mirchi, and turmeric and sauté another 30 seconds.
6. Add the curd mixture and stir to combine. Allow to come to a boil, then lower the heat to low and allow it to cook, stirring occasionally, for 30-45 minutes, until thickened.
7. Meanwhile, finish the pakore. Stir the onion slices to distribute any moisture they may have released. Add just enough water to hydrate all the besan and allow the pakoras to hold together.
8. Heat about an inch of neutral oil on medium in a large pan. Once hot, drop small handfuls of pakora mixture into the oil. Fry, flipping once, until golden brown on both sides. Remove onto a paper-towel-lined plate or wire rack.
9. Add pakoras to the kadhi, along with garam masala, and allow to simmer for another 5-10 minutes until kadhi is very thick and creamy. Remove into a serving dish.
10. Make the tadka. Heat margarine in a small skillet until sizzling. Add cumin seeds, chili pepper, and mirchi and heat until fragrant. Pour the oil, seeds, and chili over the finished kadhi and serve immediately.
Serve with roti, paratha, rice, or jeera rice.

Hiyah! Could I request headcanons for Leona and Trey and Jamil (seperately ofc) with a female s/o who is great at making Japanese food and snacks and shares them with everyone including their families?
Fem! S/O makes Japanese food and sweets
Author's Note: Everyone can be in the kitchen, not only women. If you think women only belong in the kitchen, then go away!
Pairing: Leona, Trey, & Jamil x Fem! Reader
Warnings: Female Reader
Tumblr media
Leona
At first, he would be napping then get woken up by you to try something you made.
He would say that he's losing sleep because of you, but we know the truth.
One day while at Savanaclaw, you borrowed the kitchen and Leona was napping in his room. You were cooking up a storm as Jack came back from his workout and you offered to cook something since he was curious about your cooking.
Leona woke up to a savory aroma and followed it all the way to the kitchen to see Jack eating your food as you listened to what he had say about it.
The audacity of your friend/his underclassmen
He strolled over and rested his chin on your shoulder then opened his mouth, indicating to feed him.
You gave him some, but after that, Leona would hang around you more if you cooked and would buy you some ingredients or cookbooks you wanted.
He would taste test your food and tell you if anything was wrong with it.
Teases you that if he dies, it's on your hands.
He took you home and found you spending your time in the library as well as kitchen, experimenting or researching new flavors to use in your craft.
Its safe to say that Cheka enjoyed your food to the point he would always ask Leona if you made anymore yummy food whenever he sees him either when at the palace or visiting Leona at NRC.
Trey
The Cooking Duo
Trey would probably ask for your help when he tries to make Japanese sweets.
Totally just for the assistance, not to spend time with you.
Anyway, you two would spend time together in the kitchen, even fi you're cooking food while he makes sweet.
He would taste test in the exchange of you doing the same of his sweets.
Will give you detailed analysis about everything but will also give you simple feedback just to spite you.
You both do this to each other.
During break, he took some of your food home and within the week, he texted that your invited over during break if you weren't busy which you weren't.
when you asked him what suddenly brought this, he told you that his family ate the containers full of your food and were wanting to meet you.
You showed up to the house and was welcomed by a bunch of Trey's younger siblings. His parents told you that they wanted to sell your sweets as a holidays time treat in exchange that they'd pay you.
Agreeing, you help around the bakery and get to hear about how Trye was when he was younger from both parents and customers who've been around for a while.
Trey and you hardly had a moment by yourself without his family spying on you two.
Covered in flour at times? Yes.
When you leave, his siblings are holding onto you, not wanting you to leave.
Jamil
Another one where you two would probably have cooking dates.
Would be straight forward with you if you ask him to taste test your food.
You both you exchange lunches with each other for the other to have a taste of what you both made.
Safe to say, Kalim and Najma were fans of your cooking if you sent any home with him. He has to hide it from Najma, espcially if he brings some home.
Would suggest different flavors to use in your recipes.
Just don't give him anything date flavored.
Enjoys when you make curry and rice for him to eat.
I could see him refusing to share if someone asked to try your food from the lunch you made him.
When the Training camp is over, he is immediately happy when he realizes he can eat your food again without Vil breathing down his neck.

It Takes a Mob pt.6
Previous
First
“I still don’t get why Bill gets the kid. He didn’t even want him if the first place!”
Bill sighed he absentmindedly put a hand across the giggling mound on his front.
“Yeah yeah, you forget you’re a crackhead without an’ addiction. Can’t hide shit on you.”
Locking the door behind them, Bill checked that Danny could still breathe under the jacket Marv shoved over them.
Bill, quite frankly, felt like a child messing around in his father’s closet again.
The jacket was big on Marv, so Bill looked was drowning in the thing.
“You act like you aren’t happy that I’m the one doing the heavy lifting.”
Marv let out a guffaw from behind him,
“Heavy lifting? Bill, he’s a baby, weighs less than a handful of grapes.”
“Yeah, well how about we switch, and you say that after afterwards? I have a newfound respect for women.”
Danny poked his head out and seemed very entertained by the commute.
Happily babbling away an swiveling to and fro'.
‘Good instincts,’
Bill mused,
‘Keep them up kid. Watchful eyes, saves your guys and all that.’
The three thugs were walking together in a rough diagonal line with Bill in the center. It was casual enough not to draw attention but if needed they could have the kid covered. Maybe they were being a bit paranoid, but that pays in crime ally. The rest of the walk for what it was worth, was thankfully quiet.
Well, as quiet as Gotham could be. A couple of meagering drunks and some of the nosy ladies of the night withstanding.
A couple light jokes with the ladies and a look from the others got to the guys and they got were they needed to be without any fanfare.
No, problems only arose when they got to work.
It started at the door.
Danny was gently tucked away as they walked to the door.
“Hey fellas, I know we have no official dress code ‘round here but you’re pushing it with that dress.”
“Stan, if I wanted your opinion on my clothes I’d’ve asked ahead of time. Just check us in.”
Stan leaned against the door before dramatically lifting his clipboard.
“Alright, your names?”
“What?”
“What? Need a name to sign you in. Would hate to have all those hours to go unaccounted for.”
Oh, Bill hates Stan, pompous because got a job through daddy dearest. He would blame his upbringing, but Bill knew the Brat’s father. Gabe did his best with that one, just unfortunate that his kid took after his Ex-wife more often than not.
Any normal given night, this would be the moment that someone would have to descale the situation. Bill felt the urge to grab his knife in the back of his mind.
But this was no ordinary night. He was carrying something a lot squishier and more precious than his bruised ego at the moment.
“Bill.”
Was spat through gritted teeth. Stan clicked his tongue and shook his head.
“Don’t see a Bill here.”
“Man, just let Bill in, you know him! He’s been working here for two years!”
“Well, I’m just doing my job Marv, you don’t have to be so feisty.”
Bill released out a deep breath be for uttering,
“William. Overbeck. Junior.”
“Ahh! Yup! There you are Junior! Making’ your old man proud, right?”
“Listen here you tweaky little fuck- “
“Stanley? you better not be messing with Bill out there! If you need to learn a thing or two from a senior than I can gladly-“
“No madam! Right this way.”
Bill always had a soft spot for Ken’s Me-mah. He made sure to step aside as Ken ran too her voice.
“Me-maw!!”
“Hi sugar, you’ve been keeping’ out of trouble now?”
Ken was grinning like a mad man as held the elderly lady.
“Only the stuff I’m not given permission to do!”
“That’s my boy.”
“What are you doing in our neck of the woods this evening?”
Marv asked as she walked over to the others.
“Oh, you know how it is in the kitchen, all the hard things to carry I just thought I was best I didn’t bother trying. We got enough flour and rice to feed all of crime alley that needs to be unloaded. Bill, Marv, do you mind helping a weak old woman?”
“Hardly weak, Me-mah. Everybody knows you have just as much sway as a general around here.”
“And don’t you forget it sonny! Now you two, come! We got work to do for tomorrow and the night is young.”
Bill shifted awkwardly on his feet,
“Well, you see- “
“Don’t you start with me William! I still know your daddy’s number! Now get!”
~~~~~~~~
Bill and Marv stepped into the old kitchen single file. The smell of spices and heat of the oven filled the air.
Bringing out a large cutting board Me-mah gestured to Bill with a knife.
“So, before we begin, do you boys want to tell me what you dragged into my kitchen?”
‘Shit,’
The men shared a glance, and Bill raised a hand to try to come up with something plausible.
“Don’t you think about lying or running, we all know I’ll eventually find out. The only question is am I finding out by you or by word of mouth. Now off with the coat Bill, unless you’re finally eating right.”
Bill put down his finger.
