I was interviewed on Storyteller Conclave!

You’ve probably seen several posts on here about how I’m going to be on Storyteller Conclave talking about Eureka. If you haven’t, you’re going to, because there’s still some in the queue and I’m not going to remove them.

But, that happened, and it was a great time! You can listen to the episode here, here, here, or here!

I wasn’t on my A-game the whole time unfortunately, I had some mic trouble for about the first 20 minutes, along with some other distractions on my end that kept me from focusing early on, but luckily I had team member @ashweather to support me and help me out.

If you can bear with the rocky start, there’s a lot of good insight into the design of Eureka: Investigative Urban Fantasy in this podcast, and a lot of it goes into stuff that we haven’t really covered on this blog, especially the themes.

We talk about the realistic and simulationist nature of Eureka and how this serves its gameplay and themes, we talk about how it takes inspiration from John Woo films such as Hard Boiled, its pretty unique approach to the concept of HP, how it approaches and flips the concept of "winning", and its deeply character-driven nature.

Of course we also talk about Eureka's unique and awesome rules for investigative gameplay, and how it improves upon games that did investigative gameplay before it. How it trusts the players' intellect, but also won't leave them totally twisting in the wind after a bad roll or two!

My favorite thing we talked about, near the end of the show, was Eureka’s approach to monsters, disability, and its sympathy towards “bad people.” I’m actually going to be writing a whole essay on this topic hopefully before the Kickstarter ends on May 10th, but you can get a really good gist of it just from listening to this episode of the podcast.

Oh and on that subject, the hosts, two veteran Vampire: The Masquerade players, said in the show that in many ways, Eureka does vampires better than VTM. Like, wow, that’s high praise..

MATT'S SONG Title: The Tollbooth Lyrics: When Britain's national health service was launched in 1948 it set sail in the wake of the second world war when the country's citizens the upper and lower classes both the rich and the desperately poor had served together, side by side and the ones who survived the horrors came home demanding to no surprise more

we did not fight, they said in our millions just for things to return to the way they were we didn't die they said in our hundreds of thousands just to save a country where the leading cause of death is poverty and perhaps for the first time in british history the aristocrats and the working class agreed on something largely that arming the nation and teaching them how to fight and die for what they believe in makes their demands somewhat more convincing

and so barely three years after the soldiers had come home on july 5th, 1948 the british health system was torn out by the follicles and rebuilt in a new vision that it would be free at point of service, that no one, NO ONE, would be turned away or trapped into debt by lack of personal means that it would be available to everyone who walked through the doors of a hospital or a GP's office and that the well off wouldn't be able to skip the queue this was radical beyond comprehension a truly universal healthcare system doctors across the nation barred their doors and hired personal security so sure were they that the empowered impoverished would storm their offices demanding medicine and aid only to find on that monday morning a polite queue of people in need who for the first time were able to receive the treatment they would have had since birth if they had been born into a wealthier family

the trouble is healthcare is one of those futureproof industries like plumber people are always going to need water and if you can fix their pipes you are, within reason, set for life and the hospital and the doctor's surgery are no exception people are always going to get sick they're always going to get injured at the very very least everyone has to be born and everyone has to die and you would be an idiot would you not if you had the opportunity and the presence of mind to not set up a tollbooth at the well-worn bridges that lead into and out of this life

i am being faceitious of course who thinks like this who is so calculating and cruel that they would look at the legions of dying and sick and feel not compassion but greed who would see not the faces of their own parents, friends and children but a sea of investment a captured market a well of bottomless profit

it would be inappropriate for me to delve too deep into the catacombs that are the American Healthcare System if you are listening from those shores, then you know better than i do how it feels to live in fear of a broken bone of a cough that won't go away of a necessary surgery or a birth in the family I have personally met people who were having to choose between treatment for a treatable disease and a slow death So as to have something to leave their loved ones in their will A meagre windfall, after all, is infinitely preferable over a cascade of debt Maybe, at best, you are simply aware of how lucky you are To not fear these things as many do The privilege of being able to treat mild maladies as the inconvenience they are rather than an existential threat

I bring this up only because The profit machine that is the american healthcare system Is hungry And needs to be fed There is no such thing as too much money There is no endgame in an investment portfolio Where you find the princess in the very last castle and the credits roll There isn't a kill screen where the arcade machine craps out and kicks you back to the beginning The score just keeps getting bigger and bigger, the numbers getting longer and longer, Separated by decimal points and letters and commas And when the numbers get so unwieldy that we run out of space, Eh, we'll just start printing the end of year reports in landscape The machine needs to eat And the painkillers and bloodied sheets of 333 million people could only satisfy it for so long Its eyes, inevitably, have turned east

And what do you think it sees? When you have broken your arm and are getting it cast at 3am When your parents start visibly ageing and wilting When your child gets a cough that won't go away Do you think it wants to help? Or do you think it wants to fucking eat them?

More a Haunting than a History - Version 2.0!!

an (updated!) interactive fiction game from E. Jade Lomax (ink-splotch / dirgewithoutmusic), the writer who brought you Beanstalk, Second Star to the Left podcast, and Stay?. "Return to your sleepy, strange little hometown after years away. Explore your old haunts, reconnect with old friends and new, and dig into the mysteries that rise up in the town like mist. It's a story about leaving home and coming home; about life after death-- in more ways than one. This choose-your-own-adventure game lets you explore who you used to be so that you can decide who you want to be."

More a Haunting than a History is my second IF (interactive fiction) game, a story about returning to your childhood small town and finding both it and yourself different than you left them.

Version 2.0 is cleaner, stronger, with new content and a trophy system! If you've already explored MAHTAH, dive back in to see what's new to find, experience, or break-- if you haven't given MAHTAH a chance yet, I'd love it if you gave the new & improved version a try!

PLAY IT HERE:

In version 2.0, I made three main changes, as well as various bug fixes (thanks everyone who wrote me about bugs!):

Updated the dialogue system to make for smoother, less awkward conversations-- dialogue being the main gameplay mechanism!

Streamlined the dreams & climax/river scene systems to improve the narrative experience (ensure certain backstory content got seen/emphasized/excluded as relevant)

Introduced a trophy system (more details on the why of this under the cut)

MAHTAH was both a blast and a slog to write, just like Stay? was a rush -- I'd love to hear your thoughts, feelings, and experiences as I start chipping away at my next IF project.

Why trophies? I've added in "trophies" at the end of the game because a) it seemed fun and b) I'm hoping this will help shore up one of what I see as the weaknesses of MAHTAH-- a single playthrough feels "complete."

In some ways, this was a goal of mine; I wanted non-repeat players (players who get to an ending and never pick up the game again) to have a satisfactory and full experience & to not feel like they were "missing out" on anything. 

But this also leads to there being no clear motivation to replay the game, and no hint of the different secrets you can find, relationships you can build through the game, and endings you can have open up to you. It makes the "exploration space" feel more shallow than Stay?'s-- and it is certainly different than Stay?'s-- but they are both stories about exploration & discovery.

In MAHTAH, the discoveries are your friends, your feelings, your relationships, your past-- yourself, even. You can get a pretty full picture in a single playthrough if you max enough things out, in just the right way, but generally I think it takes a few playthroughs of MAHTAH to get the full experience and story.

Even if a single playthrough can be "satisfying,"  it's not the end of the story or the experience, but my focus on trying to make single playthroughs "stand on their own" undercut the visibility to the gaps and holes still remaining that required repeat playthroughs to access. 

So: trophies. They're fun! And they both inform the player at the end of the story that there is content they didn't access -- and ideally make some of that content interesting and desirable. It gives the player a goal as they launch into the next playthrough, and hopefully having that goal lets them play the game in new ways and meet new experiences.

I'm Sami, one of the members of the family who used to cherish the lives of others wherever they go. My family and I lived in a warm house full of love. A home where each of us had a life filled with happiness, passion, and love for our community with a sense of responsibility for contributing to improve it. Let me take you on a small tour of the lives of my family members, just a glimpse of our life before this war.

Rifat: My father and the eldest in this warm family. He worked as an English language teacher and aimed to serve the community by providing English language lessons. It didn’t matter whether free or paid, his focus was on improving people's proficiency in English and helping them to pass academic exams and job interviews for international organizations. Rifat worked hard and devoted himself for over 25 years by teaching thousands of youth seeking a better future, providing training courses on how to teach the English language, and making it easy for non-native speakers.

Naeema: She graduated long ago with a degree in Arabic language but she chose not to work as a teacher. Instead, she devoted her life to maintaining her family, and ours, and providing all the needs to ensure a cohesive and lively environment for us. She was also dedicated to helping others with no expectations for anything in return. She always aimed to share her expertise with those in need to help them change their life for the better.

Rawan: She graduated with a degree in social psychology. She had worked with numerous international and local organizations in mental support, child protection, women's protection against GBV, and g initial psychological first aid. She carried a noble message about maintaining social solidarity and protecting the most vulnerable categories in Eastern societies, such as people with disabilities, women, and children.

Sami: This is me. I completed my studies in two departments. I majored in law in the English language, and also in information technology. I worked in various fields, starting with youth empowerment training to ensure a better future. Then, I became a trainer in gender equality, training journalists on press rights, and social media influencers on women and child violence protection. Later, I coordinated training sessions related to writing entrepreneurial projects related to technology and the green economy. Eventually, I formed a team called "Haya Team," and we began creating digital content discussing youth and societal issues. For example, we started a podcast called "Haya Podcast". We were visible on all social media platforms to raise awareness among young people and to contribute to improving prevailing social ideas. I helped my team set up a fully equipped podcast studio to make it a platform and a wide space for young people to express their opinions and aspirations.

Shaimaa: She graduated from high school with high grades and high hopes to work in the humanitarian field where she can benefit herself and others. She chose to study nursing and attended many courses to be highly responsible and knowledgeable in her field to assist herself in her study preparing for job opportunities that are no longer available in Gaza.

Mohammed: He had recently graduated from high school and aimed to study a vital field. He was energetic and loved to stay active and busy. He was between two choices to study law or nursing. Unfortunately, he didn’t get the chance to choose as the war had just stolen his dreams. He didn’t start his university life yet.

Only one week left before off-season is finally over - don't know how you're feeling, but I'm ready to see what this years grid is bringing along (especially when the drama pre-season hit pretty hard). Concentrating on first and foremost getting ahead of her brother, she does not even notice that there are some people even in her own team who think she does not deserve this spot and would rather see her fail. And one driver in particular seems to have a need of always reminding her of that.

────ʚ C H A P T E R III ɞ────

My eyes are fixed on the screen in front of me. My hands are steady on the steering wheel, which almost feels like I'm sitting in a real car. The replica cockpit seat is a little more uncomfortable, but only because the actual sports seats are adapted to the driver's back and this one is just a makeshift one. I don't know what time it is or how long I've been driving virtual tracks in this simulator, but I'm starting to get hungry.

I usually love the days I get to spend at headquarters, but the last two weeks have been beyond strange. I don't seem to be on the same wavelength as my new team yet. Fernando has been the only buffer between us so far and hasn't provided a minute of silence.

I feel lost. Since my first days of training camp at Aston Martin, I've felt like I'm constantly having to cut myself back. It's like I've been transported back to my school days. Once or twice I've dreamed of that time - reliving exams I've completed years ago and either missed or failed.

I don't sleep well, but I'm still here every day at seven o'clock sharp in the morning to fit in a few extra training sessions in both the simulator and the gym before everyone else. Maybe I'm just not admitting to myself that it's easier if I arrive before anyone else is sitting at their desk that I need to talk to. The team seems committed, but I notice that everyone is looking at me a little skeptically. The same questions that have been floating around in the newspapers for weeks and months are open and unhindered on their faces, but I'm not actually being asked any questions.

Sometimes I miss the people from Formula 2. In every phone call with Enzo, in which he enquires about my well-being or simply wants to talk about his latest flirt, I notice how my tense shoulders slump and a laugh escapes me here and there. Then another couple of hours pass before I sneak off to the toilet on the third floor, the one that nobody ever uses because it's on the executive level, and gulp down my lunch while closing my eyes and listening to a podcast over and over again.

I tried to get along with everyone, I really did. But after they only exchanged the bare minimum of words with me in the first week, even though I was only trying to make conversation, my enthusiasm waned a little with each passing day. At some point in week two, I brought home-baked cake, which two days later stood hardened and not a bit poorer in the kitchen in the same place where I had initially placed it.

The first few tests in the simulator always ended the same way: Either with in a virtual pile of tires or so slowly that no further comment on my driving style came except an "Again." As soon as I wanted to sit down at a table in the kitchen, everyone suddenly had to get up or was at the end of their lunch break - the only one who regularly stayed seated or called me over was Fernando. But as he's already in meetings for this week's car launch, I have to endure the emotionless stares on my own.

I don't know why I can't find a rhythm. Neither in the car nor with the people around me. I wouldn't normally describe myself as shy. Especially next to Max, I'm often come across as a ray of sunshine – currently I'm feeling more like a never-ending rain cloud.

I take the last bend and step on the gas on the last straight. Then I look at my time. Faster than in the last few weeks but nowhere near Fernando's recent driving. I exhale. "The virtual setup still feels a bit strange in the right-hand bends," I say and look through the glass front to my left, behind which two colleagues are hiding who have been assigned to observation duty - probably involuntarily. All I get from both is a thumbs-up and a fake smile.

My hands find their way to the harness fasteners and free me. My legs move to stand next to the car as if of their own accord. I look towards the ceiling and blink away a few tears before making my way to my next stop. Physiotherapist here I come.

"I miss Enzo," I say after I unbuckle the training tower cables after the last repetition.

"I know, but Sarah's great. I promise," Leonardo replies as he massages my calves. Then again, massage would imply something pleasant - this is true hell. I let out a quick "ow" as he tries to massage a knot.

"I haven't met her yet, maybe I should change that. Do you happen to know when she's due to arrive?"

"Supposedly next week, but you can probably imagine that after her honeymoon she won't be too keen to be physically separated from her husband again." He bends my foot in every possible direction and at the same time tries to work my calf muscles from all sides down to the deepest layer.

"I hope she's more like you. There are already enough people here who don't like me."

Leonardo becomes quiet. I sense that he wants to say something but is holding back. I don't blame him. He has been working for Aston Martin for two years and always talks about how happy he was when he got the job offer. I don't blame him for sticking to his colleagues rather than me. But at least I can talk to him about how I'm feeling at the moment - and sometimes he even sheds some light on things.

The vibration of my cell phone snaps me out of my thoughts. I briefly consider just leaving it and answering it later, but suddenly messages come in every second and I can no longer hold back my curiosity. I stretch to my right and reach for my cell phone. Messages from Enzo.

A smile creeps onto my lips.

"Is there a friend we don't know about?" Leonardo teases me. I reflexively lock the phone screen and throw my phone back into my bag.

"No, a good friend." I don't want to tell anyone that I'm still in contact with my previous race engineer. I'm still not sure who I can and can't trust here. "Leclerc has apparently released music."

Leonardo laughs. "He's probably trying to build up a second mainstay in case Lewis does become primary driver in 2025."

"You've heard about that too, haven't you? Awesome." I wonder how openly I can speak here, but then discard the idea because I've never been someone who doesn't completely overshare with anyone anyway. "I'm curious to see how his move to Ferrari will play out this season. And especially what it could mean for Fernando."

"Has he spoken to you about it?"

"With me? We've only known each other for what feels like two minutes, I hardly think he's going to reveal his plans to me. But to be honest, I would totally get it. I don't think Mercedes is as bad as everyone thinks."

A moment of silence. Leonardo takes a deep breath, and I almost don't notice that he starts to speak.

I continue bluntly: "On the other hand, where is Carlos going? I think it's a shame for him. So much work, so much ambition, he was the only one who could at least halfway hold a candle to my brother. But maybe Mercedes is going in a completely new direction? So many questions all buzzing around in my head and somehow I can't talk to anyone about it, so I'm sorry if I'm making you feel too tired."

"Why do you feel that way? That you can't talk to anyone, I mean."

"Difficult subject. But it's been on my mind for a while. Both the Lewis to Ferrari issue and the fact that I'm always being ignored here."

"Emma, can I ask you an honest question?" Leonardo stops massaging my thighs and I sit up. He's looked so tense since our session started - maybe I should suggest he books a massage with his physiotherapist.

"Are you planning to go to Mercedes?"

Silence. I know for a fact that my expression is slipping, and a furrow is forming between my eyebrows. My eyebrows rise as if of their own accord and a neutral "What?" slips past my lips.

"If Toto Wolff called you tomorrow and asked if you would consider driving for Mercedes next year - would you...would you at least think about it?" Now Leonardo looks me in the eye with a serious expression. I shake my head and laugh.

"As if they would ask me."

"Would you?" he asks again with emphasis.

"I guess that's what it comes down to. If my team doesn't want me here, and, no offense, that's the impression I'm getting right now, why wouldn't I move to a structure where they obviously want me?" I haven't thought about the question that much myself - simply because the announcement of Lewis Hamilton's move to Ferrari only became public a week ago and caused quite a stir. I can well imagine that there are some drivers who are keen on the Mercedes seat.

Leonardo thinks about his next words, I can see it on his face. "My question is whether this is simply a stepping stone for you."

My heart stops with this question. I shake my head vigorously. "Oh my God, no, never. I was... I was so happy when it was decided that I could be part of your team. I can learn so much from Fernando and I think it will be good for me to move outside my comfort zone. My previous team was with me for some time, so a breath of fresh air is never a bad thing. At least I think so. If I had hoped for a better deal...", I raise both my hands and bend my index and middle fingers to make quotation marks, "...I would only have had to wait another year. Red Bull kept ringing my doorbell, but I didn't want to be associated with Max all the time. That's why I'm here."

Leonardo exhales, visibly relieved. "Try to be patient with the others. Everyone's been a bit tense since Lewis' transfer was announced, especially with Fernando. Now, everyone is trying to assess you. Whether you take after your father or Max or..."

"...or whether I have my own quirks? I promise, I have them." Suddenly it all makes sense. If the team can't be sure if I'll even be here when they're building the car for next year, then it's only logical not to invest 100% of their energy in something that's already got one foot out the door.

I turn to him and hold out my wrists. He reaches behind him and then presses two tennis balls into my hand - coordination training. I exhale in annoyance.

"If you just be yourself during pre-season testing, everyone will realize that you're an asset to us. I promise." I smile. Then I think of the heat in Bahrain, the left and right turns and the feeling of sitting in our new car for the first time. The sizzling feeling in the air. The smiles, the people, the anticipation. That really weird feeling in my fingers, my breath patterns and my heartbeat, when the first few laps start to feel less overwhelming. This thought puts a smile on my face for the rest of the week that not even the lunch breaks in the women's toilet can wipe away.

The Jewish Chronicle asked me to write about the chances for a settlement in the Middle East. My first thought was to cling to the received wisdom that no compromise is possible. Whatever people might say in public, the dynamic and dominant forces on both sides push against the notion that Palestinians can have their own state in the occupied territories alongside Israel.

Israel has moved ever further rightwards since the failed Oslo peace negotiations of the 1990s. In the minds of most Israelis swapping land for peace is discredited.

On the other side, the global left denounces Israel as a white settler state and believes it has no right to exist. (The abolition of Israel is what that tortuous label “anti-Zionism” means.) Hamas wants an Islamic state from the river to the sea.

And yet the more I looked at it the more I felt that the extremists had led both their peoples to disaster, and that the old compromise of a two-state solution remained the only way forward.

Here is how I argued it out.

Only a desperate opportunist fighting to save his career (and to stay out of the dock) would insult his truest ally. But that is what Benjamin Netanyahu did when he rejected Joe Biden’s two-state solution.

The US president and every friendly and half-friendly European and Arab government want a settlement, as does the Palestinian Authority, as do all decent people.

Yet scratch the surface and the two-state solution can seem like a pious myth.

It is invoked but not believed.

In my darker moments, I look at everyone concerned with the conflict and think they’re all Bibi Netanyahu now. They would rather engage in war to the death than compromise.

As this is the JC, let us look at it first from a Palestinian point of view. Does a two-state solution mean Israel will withdraw from all of the West Bank, taking 700,000 settlers with it? Will it give Palestinians East Jerusalem as their capital?

If not, refugees in Gaza, Syria and the wider Palestinian diaspora will be asked to give up their claim to the lands they lost after 1948 — their right of return — for a tiny fractured state that would be at Israel’s mercy.

If you are a member of the global left, you have been told repeatedly that the two-state solution is already dead. In its place, progressives demand a single, multinational and multi-faith nation where peace, love and understanding will flourish.

The reality behind this utopian con trick was exposed when the former leader of Hamas, Khaled Mashaal, told the Kuwaiti podcaster Amar Taki earlier this month that the massacres of October 7 showed the way forward.

They had renewed “the dream and the hope for Palestine from the river to the sea”, Mashaal said, drawing encouragement from the demonstrators chanting Hamas slogans in Western capitals. “The American and Western public” was on the side of Hamas, and understood that war was the way forward to a unitary Islamic state.

So there you have it. Innocent Western leftists don’t know that Hamas takes their “from the river to the sea” chants, not as calls for a happy-clappy one-state solution but as an endorsement for more murder and rape. (Although I suspect their leaders know it all too well.)

As for the Israeli case against compromise, JC readers know it well. Since 1948, Palestinians have rejected every offer. When Israel did what all the good people wanted and pulled out of Gaza, Hamas took over and declared war.

Why should Israelis agree to the West Bank becoming a new launching pad for attacks on them?

Even the Israeli left has given up on peace.

The mobilisation of progressive Israelis against Netanyahu’s attempt to undermine the judiciary in 2023 was magnificent to watch. It has in all likelihood saved the country from becoming a strongman’s bossocracy. But it was a movement to protect Israeli society from the extreme right, not to improve the lives of Palestinians in the West Bank and Gaza.

It was as if the protesters had tacitly accepted that the cause of a two-state solution was hopeless and the best thing to do was to carry on as if Israelis lived in a bubble and the occupied territories did not exist.

Why not play the tough guy and tell these hard truths?

There’s an appeal, after all, to posing as the realist who cuts through all the soppy progressive platitudes. After October 7, I heard a BBC correspondent speculating in the voice of a well-bred upper-middle class English liberal that perhaps the violence would spur a new push for peace.

Oh yeah, I thought.

Israelis will respond to the evil of October and Palestinians will respond to the destruction of Gaza. The spiral of mutually assured misery will twist down ever lower. That’s just the way it is.

But it need not be.

Look where the tough guys have already taken Palestinians and Israelis. The Hamas belief that no compromise is possible led to war crimes against Israelis that have been disasters for Palestinians.

Twenty thousand or more have died in the Israeli counter-attack and the Gaza Strip is in ruins.

Meanwhile, the supposedly tough-minded Israeli right was so concerned with undermining the judges that the worst massacre of Jews since the Holocaust happened while it was looking the other way. As far as anyone can tell, Netanyahu and his allies are now clueless in Gaza. They have no idea what to do once their war is over, assuming it is ever over.

There are small confidence-building measures available to both sides. Israel could announce an immediate freeze on settlement building. It might accept that it could withdraw from most of the West Bank at minimal cost. Palestinians might make a decisive break with terror tactics, which have served them so badly for so long.

I am not saying these changes are probable, even though the polls show a majority of Israelis back Biden.

But they are preferable to the winner-takes-all positions of the extremists on both sides. Israeli far-right politicians are not, of course, equivalent to the Hamas butchers, but both have brought ruin on their peoples.

Even More Of My Lesbian OCs

It's time for another wave of OC chat! This is my favorite thing to write because, I want to write about my OCs. Please give me more excuses to write about my OCs, ask me questions or some shit, I want to talk about them. This time we're covering my most current Campaigns OC and some older TTRPG OCs as well as one Text based roleplay OC. I figure this is the most fun way to celebrate Lesbian Visibility Week. Flora Feral aka Twister

Flora is a fun OC in that she was based off of a character from my Webcomic Wish from an early issue I never got to release and I reenvisioned the concept for the cancelled podcast I was on Super Streets. Since then she's been slightly tweaked again a few times as she has gone to slightly different settings since Super Streets cancelation and changes in the people that could be in her life. She was a doomed playbook in Masks so she has the associated tropes although those existed in the OG version of the OC which was created before Masks: The Next Generation was even published. Flora Feral is possessed by the goddess Sorra, a powerful elder goddess forgotten to history whom her mother sacrificed her too after finding out she was trans and wanting nothing to do with her. Sorra killed her mother in turn but granted the family the fortune that was her end of the bargain. Flora died but came back perhaps thanks to Sorra or perhaps thanks to her own will regardless she is slowly being consumed by Sorra, every part of her spirit and herself will one day be Sorra and there will be no Flora left at all. With her limited time she tries to hold Sorra back from killing people and to make the world a better place even knowing every time she uses her powers it brings her own demise ever closer. Flora lost her girlfriend getting visions of Sorra killing her if they remained together she broke up with her and had been a solo act since even if she cares deeply for people she worries about how Sorra may hurt them.

Mystic Cutie L aka Mara

Mara is from my most active and recent campaign in the Setting Hope At Art's End, a Setting that you may be able to play yourself in the next Thirsty Sword Lesbians expansion. Mara is a magical girl from the world of Mystic Cutie Sailor L. She's the leading lady and when her world was being altered by the Mouse Princess to turn into the "family friendly" Sandwich Squad her girlfriends in a moment of clarity gathered their power up to set her free by launching her into another world and send her into Art's End. Loaded with the trauma of being turned into "Cutie lettuce" Mara attempted to pantomime acting like her old self but she had a deep rage, sorrow and more she felt would manifest when fighting agents of The Mouse Princess. Mara does her best to keep it together but until she saved her world she was really struggling to make connections always feeling like she shouldn't feel real joy when her girlfriends were suffering in their own world forced to act out a shame of a life. She's now happily shifted from the Trickster playbook over to The Matriarch and it was really fun to explore a take on the Trickster that actually worked for me since normally it was one of my least favorite conflicts to play.

Fearless aka Maria, Elena and Sapphire

Coming from a Masks Campaign Fearless is an adaption of some concepts from a comic I have had on the back burner for a long time Lipstick. The Reformed Fearless was made up of two girls fused together and their persona that formed between the two of them as their own person. Maria gave up her life of crime to make it where Elena and Sapphire wouldn't need to have to deal with the consquences of her actions but also to help her crush EliZe the elder goddess live her dream of being a super hero. They joined a team of teen super heroes and helped fight against the wild forces attacking the city from alien dragons to evil companies they dealt with it all. All the while being one of the most chaotic elements on the team always willing to challenge what was good or evil. Maria dated a teenage reincarnation of Morgan Le Fey, the fearless trio had a big polycule, their was time travel and all sorts of good stuff between the three. As they grew together they eventually decided to leave the team behind to open up a bakery Elena wanted to do and for them to return to a life of being gay doing crime now that they've dealt with the system more and saw all of it's flaws. They do keep up friendly relationships with several former team members including becoming the arch enemy of one of their best friends but like in a fun way, almost romantic.

Xena and Seraphina Aka Dreamer and Loki

Another set of OCs I used in a Masks campaign brings in Xena and Seraphina. Xena was The Brain and Seraphina was The Legacy. I played both at the same time unable to pick between the two I simply tied the pair together. Xena and Seraphina are girlfriends who love each other a lot. Xena was kidnapped by the queen of nightmares and while she was kidnapped for her genius mind Seraphina become Loki to try and save her but in the end was still unable to break into the realm of Nightmares. Xena escaped Nightmare and the pair were reunited becoming super heroes as they attempted to defeat an company that was at odds with nightmare too. The pair did their best to play both sides along with their friends eventually managing to take both forces out. The two both fell for other women but remained together in a polyamarous relationship. The two can be a bit co-dependent at first but as they recovered from their trauma they learned to count on the others alot more.

Azucar Scamsly Glasc

Azucar isn't from any particular campaign but instead if an OC that comes from a League Of Legends inspired written roleplay. She is my problematic baby girl, my sweet terrible child. Azucar is Renata Glasc's girlfriend but to keep it under cover she's technically adopted by her and simply a musical talent she is using to earn revenue across Runeterra but particularly from the Piltovens. She is part of a found family of swindlers originally intending to just scam some money from Renata with her job singing at a Zaunite club the two came to mutually respect each other as they both one uped each other in a mental battle. Azucar might have been able to match Renata at wits but she is 100% on her team and devoted to her goals happily submissive to her dommy girlfriend. She's always down to do a murder, manipulate people, put on a role or a character and really just mess around with folks. She is part Fairy but hides that part of herself since people don't believe Fairies are even real but her powers prove they very much are. Azucar has been through the ringer living life as a poor zonite orphan and she's seen the high life of Piltover being the best friend to one of the richest people in Piltover. Azucar refuses to live a life being treated like dirt and she'll do whatever it takes to live the kind of life she wants. Renata puts that into a cause she can believe in, burning down Piltover which puts her in an angsty situation with her best friend and long time crush. It is really fun to really root her in the setting and explore the characters and world that will likely never really get explored to their fullest.

UNIT #2: Teaching Learners

Hey everyone! Welcome to my second blog post, this week our topic is discussing our ideal role as an environmental interpreter. My ideal role as an environmental interpreter is a complicated question because I do not want to be an environmental interpreter as a profession. You may be wondering why I would take a class called “Nature Interpretation” if I have no intentions of being a nature interpreter; well my ideal role is to be a general science interpreter, as I want to be a high school science (biology and chemistry) and math teacher. I believe that many of the practical skills of being a nature interpreter can be applied to other disciplines of science, such as communication skills, teaching learners (utilizing types of intelligences, learning styles, learning theories), and engagement without sacrificing scientific facts and detail. My role as an interpreter would be in a senior-level high school classroom hopefully teaching university-level classes (biology, chemistry, advanced functions, and introduction to calculus). I have always been very passionate about math and science, which I attribute to my very enthusiastic parents as well as having amazing teachers. I have the philosophy that the teacher/professor is often more important to student success than the content itself; the most interesting content can be ruined by bad delivery and likewise, very difficult and possibly “boring” content can be brought to life by awesome delivery. I have heard countless students write off math and chemistry because of a bad experience and a teacher they didn't like, which is just tragic. My dream since high school was to be an overly enthusiastic, passionate, slightly eccentric teacher who is a little too into the content they are teaching. I want to prevent people from avoiding math and science because they think it's boring or feel limited by bad past experiences.

However, I can be as fun and enthusiastic as I want but it won't help student’s understanding and retention of material if I do not have the teaching and interpretation skills to back that up. Specifically, the following skills are important for me to be currently developing: strong verbal and written communication skills, creative thinking for engagement, leadership, teamwork, time-managament skills (you only have ~45-75 minutes of class time), and conflict resolution. This class and the assignments are excellent opportunities to practice ALL of these skills because the qualities needed for nature interpretation are very similar to the ones needed for interpretation of other sciences and math. I am specifically very excited for the challenge of podcasting because it perfectly mimics teaching as we need to lesson plan, deliver content in an engaging but educational manner, and stay within a time limit. 

Although the podcast for the adult group is more applicable to the age group I want to teach, I am also very excited about the podcast for the child group. I think it will definitely be a challenge but also good practice for someday being a parent. I am planning on raising my future children very engaged in nature, and I will act as an environmental interpreter for them someday as my grandpa was for me growing up. From quick fun facts to pop quizzes to long highly descriptive stories, some of my fondest memories are with my grandpa who always captured my attention with his knowledge of EVERYTHING nature-related. Last summer we explored Lake Superior together; where he knows every road, trail, and rock we kayaked by like the back of his hand. He enriched the entire experience with ecological and historical commentary like an actual tour guide. I have to start honing my skills in plant and animal identification, animal behaviour, boat launching/driving, memorizing trails and bodies of water, and overall history (settlements, shipwrecks, fun facts etc.), if I want to someday play this role as he did. His ability to be an excellent nature interpreter has always astounded me and I hope I can play the role for my own kids someday.
