Neon Adjuration - Start

The bike sputtered to death on a cliché middle of nowhere American road. It might have well been straight out of a movie set with the rows of corn, gold light, and nothing else around for miles.

Jason was less than impressed.

After nearly an hour of pushing his bike and with the idyllic light quickly fading he was even less impressed. It wasn’t as if he didn’t have options. His insurance came with roadside assistance (he thought), he could give in and call a sibling to steal the Batplane and come get him, or a corn field wasn’t the worst place he’d ever slept. He had options, just none of them were really appealing.

Recognizing that the feeling was stupid didn’t make calling for help feel any less like giving up.

The corn field had to have rodents. As he had pushed his bike, they had turned from carefully manicured rows into wild, unmanaged looking things. Jason had enough sharing a bed space with rodents as a street kid to want to do it again. Jason was probably about ten minutes away from giving in and calling Dick when he saw the glow.

It was neon salvation looming out of the oppressive darkness.

The cyan light spread the furthest, but Jason could also catch magenta from where the sign was peering around the edge of what must be the shop the sign was connected too. The cast of the cyan light made the corn feel otherworldly, and Jason pushed his bike slightly faster. More of the sign was revealed with each step, carefully crafted letter by carefully crafted letter.

Jason nearly sagged in relief. Not only was it finally, blessedly civilization, but it was a mechanics shop. ‘Fix-it Freddy’s’, the sign cheerfully proclaimed. It sat next to just the sort of building that looked like it might hold up to the claim. The base structure was probably from the late 40’s, that magical time of growth when the war and dust had both faded, but it had obviously been altered and changed and repainted hundreds of times. Just from the light of the neon and the one, lonely white flood light above the large roll up door Jason could see a myriad of colors. The current one seemed to be an already fading cyan to match the sign.

Praying that shop either had someone still working or cheap security and a lock he could jimmy, Jason leaned his bike against his tired leg and rang the bell between the roll up door and the man door. His finger was barely off the buzzer before the aluminum panels shuddered and groaned. Creaking with all of the years in it, the door rolled up.

Hanging onto the chain was, well, not exactly what Jason was expecting to find out in the corn fields. They were young, Jason’s or close enough. The black hair was wild, long in the middle and pushed around from a long day of working with engine grease and oil but shaved close on the sides. The way the neon light caught their eyes practically made them glow. Their smile was almost concernedly easy. “Can I help you?”

“Yeah,” Jason said and then had to clear his throat and try again. “Yeah. I guess you’re Freddy?”

They laughed, tossing their head back. Magenta light brushed along the length of their throat. “Nah, Freddy’s been dead for nearly thirty years, not that it would stop him from working. I’m Danny, this is my place now. Why don’t you roll your bike in and we’ll take a look at it, okay stranger?”

“Jason,” he said reflexively.

“Jason,” Danny repeated with that same easy smile.

Rosmarinus officinalis

Planting tips: Rosemary has a low germination rate and slow to sprout, try using cuttings or buy from a nursery if you have problems. Keep in full sun with a well drainer container & let the soil dry out completely before watering again.

Medicinal information: Over the years rosemary was used to relieve muscle pain, repelling insects, improve memory, boost the immune system & promote hair growth.

Cautions: While safe, ingesting excessive amounts of rosemary can be dangerous and lead to vomiting, coma & pulmonary edema.

FLOYD IS FINALLY HERE!!

Sorry it took so long, guys!! I was kinda struggling with this one and work has been kicking my ass 😭 Anyways!! Without further adue, I give to you

Floyd

- This boy is not a survivalist but he's trying his best

- He was still doing his solo career when the world began to flood. Like most, he didn't realize how serious it was at first. He didn't realize until he found the concert venue he was supposed to preform at completely submerged

- He started heading for higher ground. He figured if the water kept rising, he'd have to make a raft. He'd make a boat, but he'd never made one before, and a raft seemed like it'd be a bit easier

- When he got far away enough from the rising water, Floyd set about building his raft. He got some help from a few other trolls that were in the area, which he greatly appreciated

- He finished his raft just as the water got close enough to brush against the edges of it. So he made sure everything was tied down, pushed his raft into the water and set sail

- Floyd was proud of his raft, honestly. He'd built an awning to protect himself from the sun and the rain, a little water purifier made from branches, stones and a couple palm leaves, a small cooking pit made with stones and branches and some metal he'd found, and a couple storage containers. He'd also managed to make himself a comfortable bed! Overall, he was happy with his raft

- Sailing was honestly pretty nice. Storms were a bit rough on the raft, but he was usually able to find an island afterwards and was able to fix any damage. He'd even made a couple growth plots for fruits and vegetables! He may not be a survivalist, but he at least knew he needed at least a somewhat balanced diet if he didn't wanna get scurvy

- He spent most of his time at different islands. Once he found one, he'd stay there for a week or two, relaxing in the water and gathering resources until he eventually had to set sail again. He would just live at one of the islands for a while, but he wanted to find his brothers and make sure they were alright. It'd been so long since he'd seen them, and he missed them. Sailing on his own was lonely, too, and his brothers would be good company. (He also never forgot the promise he'd made to Branch about returning to him)

- He spent a couple months doing this little routine of his. Sail for a while, find an island, relax and gather resources for a few weeks, set sail, rinse and repeat. Occasionally, a couple techno trolls would peak up from the water and offer him some help, which he often took them up on, if for nothing else than some company and conversation. It was peaceful, but he couldn't wait to find his brothers

- He also noticed a few things as he sailed. For on, he got this awful rash on his neck. He's found some plants on a couple islands that helped with the itching and soreness, but no matter what he did, it wouldn't go away

- He also noticed how dry his skin would get. Going in the water helped a lot, and he was working on trying to make lotion out of coconut oil. Surprisingly enough, his hair and fur was looking better than ever, despite him not being able to use any products other than coconut oil since the flood started

- Eventually, another techno troll came out of the water and struck up a conversation before noticing the rash on his neck. The troll went quiet for a moment before asking to see Floyd's hands. Confused but curious, Floyd complied

- The ocean troll spread Floyd's fingers and his face looked like a strange mix between relief and somber. That was when Floyd took notice that the webbing between his fingers looked ever so slightly longer

- When Floyd asked if the techno troll was alright, they sighed and told him a legend. A legend of sirens and their history with technos. A legend of how they were locked away after the elder technos feared their powers. How they'd escaped their prison around the same time the flood hit. Of how they pumped the ocean full of a deep and ancient magic that altered the bodies of those who lived on land to better help them adjust and survive life in the ocean

- Floyd had been surprised, and rightfully so. He looked at the webbing between his fingers in a whole new light. Soon enough, he might not even need his raft to survive. It was strange to think such a thing was possible, but the proff was right there in the changes that were already occurring to Floyd

- He was sailing again, looking for another island or any ships that his brothers could possibly be on, when a huge storm hit. It was an intense one, he'd never sailed through one so big! He furled his sail and held on tight, trying to keep things together

- Then, he spotted a ship. A troll in a cloak and scarf peered over the edge and asked if he was alright. Before he could respond, though, a huge wave made contact with his raft and crushed it to splinters, throwing him and everything else into the dangerous waves

- He coughed and spluttered as he tried to keep his head above the water. He was a good swimmer, but he doubted anyone but techno trolls could swim in these waves. His head dipped below the water again when he felt strong arms wrap around him and pull him to the surface. He gasped for breath and the next thing he knew, he was laying on the deck of the mysterious stranger's ship

- He coughed and spluttered as he caught his breath, and the feeling of fabric being placed on his shoulders made him look up. The stranger had wrapped his scarf and cloak around Floyd and was now fishing for the remains of his raft with his hair. The troll had a strong build and muted colors, with purple skin and blue hair that faded to green at the tips

- Floyd stood right as the stranger hauled the last of what he could onto the boat. Floyd thanked him, and the stranger offered him a smile. He introduced himself as Creek, and Floyd introduced himself in return

- Creek helped him grab his supplies before leading him to the lower levels of the ship. He made some food and cocoa to warm them up, and they got to talking. Floyd learned that Creek had been a survivalist before the flood, living on his own in the woods. Floyd mentioned how he was just working on his solo career when the flood hit

- Slowly but surely, they grew closer and built a routine. Floyd was good at fishing, so he caught a lot of their food while Creek would forage when they reached an island. He taught Floyd a lot about foraging and surviving, and Floyd appreciated it

- Floyd also helped make repairs to the ship when needed. He learned quickly how to make, fix and repair things while on his raft, and fixing up Creek's ship was the least he could do after he'd saved his life

- When they weren't busy working and gathering supplies on islands, they'd relax — either on the deck of the ship or in the water, just overall having a good time. Creek's company was nice. He had a calming sort of atmosphere around him that Floyd couldn't help but enjoy

- One day, as they were sailing, they came across an absolutely massive ship. It was so big that other ships were able to dock to it. Hell, there were even areas for troll-sized ships to dock! Curious, they decided to dock and board. Creek had put on his cloak and scarf, covering his face and hair. Floyd asked why, confused, and Creek said he'd explain some other time. Floyd didn't push it

- After traveling up an elevator to the main deck of the ship, their eyes simultaneously widened. It was a floating restaurant on the sea! No wonder people were docking here

- They walked around for a bit, just exploring, before they found an area on the bar for trolls to sit and eat and decided to head there. After finding and empty table and sitting down at it, a vacationer who introduced herself as Brandy handed them a couple menus before stating that her husband would be around shortly to take their orders

- It didn't take Floyd long to find out what he wanted to try, and once Creek had also decided, they fell into an easy conversation. They spoke about the flood, the weather, the islands they'd visited before they met, anything and everything

- Then, a voice spoke up from beside them. An oddly familiar one. The voice was asking what they'd wanted to order before Floyd glanced up and they both paused. Blue skin that matched his own. Purple hair. Same smile. Floyd grinned and leapt out of his chair to hug the troll. One of the ones he'd been searching for. One he hadn't seen in 20 years.

If it's alright to raise an idea with you, I was thinking about the gifts a Godfather could give to a newborn witch.

A godmother's comb likely can't be used until her hair properly grows out more, but a baby brush with soft bristles can be. The stimulation can loosen the cradle cap on the baby's head when they are very young, and it also promotes hair growth.

Falling in line with the comb being made of ivory, a baby brush would also probably be made of the same material?

In a ritual where their bloodbrush is created on/by their fifth birthday, the ivory baby brush can then be part of the creation for the bloodbrush proper, because it is already tied to their magic after being in use for so long, which is sort of a boon in the bloodbrush being able to guide their magic into the hair reservoir - and that's also possibly why, in the advent of the witch losing all male relatives trusted to have the First Right to tend to her hair prior to a bonding, it is then passed over to her godfather. You mentioned that as the bloodbrushes are magic, they can either change shape as needed or simply tend to all hair types as is (I think?), but I'm thinking that maybe when the tradition first began, the enchantment ritual process of creating the bloodbrush didn't do that.

Which would be why there is both a comb and a brush - one for detangling prior to washing and brushing, and the other for spreading natural oils and styling and storing magic, even though the comb could also likely still store magic just fine.

If this counts as infringing on the culture-verse, I'm sorry! No offense is meant!

Art magic and tools

A follow-up to my previous post on art magic with some more ideas surrounding what tools you use rather than specific art mediums.

Palettes

There are a couple of ways to make palettes magical. Of course you can bless a plain palette, wash it with blessed water or draw a sigil on the bottom. But there is also the symbolism of the objects you use for a palette. For an example, a large sea shell can make an excellent palette:

Here I was using gouache and the seashell as a base really helped connect me to the energies of the sea for this landscape painting.

In addition, you can use China plates (from the thrift store in my case) as paint palettes, and depending on the colour and decoration they can be used for a whole manner of purposes.

Brushes

Softer brushes, whether synthetic or genuine animal hair, can be a great way to blend and add softness to your work. By contrast, thick, coarse brushes can act as a rougher edge: more powerful in some cases, less subtle.

If you're using genuine animal hair, get to know what animal the hair came from to understand the energy of that brush. And make sure to thank the animal's spirit, if you do such things.

If you're particularly crafty, you can even make your own brushes using human hair. I've always wanted to learn to do that.

Pencils

In the past I have painted sigils onto my art pencils for use in my practice, relating to creativity and inspiration. But the type of pencil you use also has an effect.

A harder pencil, like a HB, will have a different effect to a softer 2B or 4B for example. Your pencil sharpener can also help you to embue energy into your tool: Think about your intentions as you sharpen.

Pastels

Oil pastels have a certain nostalgic feel for me, like I'm using crayons for grownups. You can carve into the base of the pastel a small symbol, or use colours based on association. You can also wrap the pastel in paper with any number of things on it, from a petition to a poem.

Mediums

Whether it's refined linseed oil for oil paints or water for watercolour or acrylics, your paint mediums can be used to bless your art work. Paint a sigil on the jar that holds the medium, or if its suitable you can bless the medium itself. For watercolour and such, you can use sacred water such as moon water. Or add a drop of essential oils into the mix (if it won't react with your paint) with intention.

Sketchbooks / Canvases

As for the paper itself, it can help to make sure you know the differences between different papers you're working with. Cold-pressed watercolour paper will have a different feel and texture to hot-pressed. Oil paper tends to be more coarse, sketchbook paper thinner ect. I mostly use mixed media paper and watercolour paper for my art.

If you have a hardback sketchbook, decorate the front with symbolic art work or sigils. I painted water lilies on the front of my sketchbook, to symbolise beauty, calmness and growth.

For a canvas, sanding down that fresh canvas can be a way to embue your intention into your piece. You can also add a sigil or rune before you start sanding. Using a canvas wedge to tighten your piece at the end or beginning can help lock in that intention.

I wash my hair about every 3 days n I frequently give myself scalp massages, especially during shampooing. I focus the shampoo on my roots, then conditioner on my ends and leave it on for at least 10 minutes. I use a large cotton t-shirt instead of a towel to squeeze out my hair because it’s much more gentle. Leave in conditioner + heat protectant and then blow dry on low heat.

I do my best to do my oil treatments every other time I wash my hair but I’m not perfect abt it >. .< .. there are tons of YouTube videos that will do a better job of explaining than I will but basically. focus the oil into your roots and massage.. work it through your hair and ends.. avoid using 2 much oil. I usually leave it on for like an hour or longer. When you wash it out you will probably want to shampoo twice ♡ other times if my hair feels dry I will rub 2 drops of oil in my hands and distribute it through my ends.

I probably don’t trim it as much as I should, n I don’t really have any time routine for this. I do it myself and just take an inch or so off the ends.. it’s also important 2 use hair cutting scissors! I use antique hair cutting scissors tht cut womens’ hair in my family for generations.. not required obviously lol but I think little magics are important.

As much as it's true that culturally, we need to work on the obsession with hair length and while it's not everybody, I find Black women that are really aggressive about Black hair not being able to get long, more often than not really struggle to care for their hair and don't seem to know how to deal with the hair version of cutting yourself and needing a plaster. We should be able to deal with minor shit happening to our hair without intervention or deciding our hair is defective.

The type of reactions I get from other Black women when it's obvious exactly how long my hair is and they ask what I do and it's obvious, I have a simple routine I've been doing for years and I don't use growth oils or pay attention to hair trends ( so basically there's magic product ) immediately these women give up in front of me. All I said was to moisturise your hair a few times a week, don't comb your hair daily and be gentle. How you go about that is up to you

I went to a hairdresser who specifically used Design Essentials, so that's what I rocked with for like....YEARS!

But since then, I've tried out Cream of Nature (I love their mousse), TGIN, Mielle (the rosemary mint hair growth oil DOES WORK!), The Doux (the mousse def foam!), and something else that I'm forgetting the name of but it comes in a jar and has a white label with a gray top. It's some curling cream that smells really yummy!

Beyoncé might get my money again because I REALLY wanna try out Cécred....but alas.

Sometimes though, I just wanna go back to the basics with Blue Magic and Pink + some tea tree oil. Just grease and shine 😭

I'm thinking about locing my hair though! But maybe keep the ends curly 🤔

but girl im gonna be real with u, shampoos and conditioners can lessen hairfall but never ever treat the issue at the root of it! try the wishcare hair growth serum concentrate if ur hair is literally dying and if not try rosemary oil/rosemary water depending on your scalp type. oil the length of your hair as well! don't hesitate to ask if u have any other questions

hey, I was wondering if you have some beauty spells, especillly hair growth spell? ^^

Hrm, nothing is really coming to mind. I don't typically do "spells" per se. Rather, I just cobble together things as needed. But here in an incomplete brainstorming list to get you started:

•enchant your shampoo, conditioner and other hair products

•turn your skincare routine into a beauty ritual

•fresh fruits like apples and berries, as well as reds and pinks are associated with beauty

•If you're down to involve a deity, Aphrodite, Venus, Freya, and Ishtar (I believe) are all associated with beauty

•I'm not an expert on magical timings, but Friday is associated with Aphrodite and Freya, so would probably be a good day for beauty work. Also, a full moon is another good time to bring things into your life

•glamours are a good spell type to look into, but a lot of people (myself included) thing of them as illusory more than transformative. Instead of making your hair grow better, they make other people think your hair looks more plush and shiny

Finally, here are a couple totally mundane haircare tips:

-only shampoo your scalp, the shampoo will rinse through the rest of your hair removing dirt but leaving the oil (which is good)

-only wash your hair when it's dirty, overwashing makes it brittle and breakable

-never brush wet hair. comb through it with your fingers. hair is most brittle when it is wet so running a brush through it makes you lose a ton

-try taking Biotin, it is a B vitamin that is supposed to be good for skin, hair and nails. I have used it for years with good results. (of course, speak with your doctor before starting any medication or supplement. I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice)
