Aspiring-pro-writer question on behalf of my Beloved: would publishing a novel online make it impossible to get it traditionally published later?
They think the book has merit (so do I) and would enjoy the, motivation boosts that come with people reading the "serialisation", but aren't willing to sacrifice a potential Actual Publisher Deal.
For a good while the "received wisdom" was that self-publishing would kill your book's chances with traditional publishers. Fortunately, this has since proven to be false. This article pulls together a number of the best-known stories in which the author self-pubbed a given work first and then had it picked up by traditional publishers later... sometimes for seriously large amounts of money.
If I wasn't yet published, in the market we're in today, and had a book I wanted to get out there, I honestly wouldn't wait. Traditional publishers are under incredible pressure—too many submissions chasing too few publishing slots, and too few editors in-house any more to do the work of getting a book into print—and it's increasingly difficult to get a tradpub house to publish you without an agent (and sometimes, even with one.) So I'd almost certainly choose to self-publish. ...But I'd take advice first on what the best way to market a first-time work, especially one in my chosen genre, might be. Simply having written something terrific, and publishing it, isn't enough. You've got to find a way to get the word out about it to people who can help the information about it spread.
Working out a marketing plan means a lot of homework and strategizing. And inevitably there's going to have to be some monetary investment in advertising and/or other kinds of publicity (newsletters, blog tours, etc etc). Everybody who approaches this situation winds up having to determine how much money is okay to spend on such a project, and how much is too much. No two answers to the question are going to be alike. But then again, no two authors are alike... and no two books.
And one note more. I take the point about wanting the motivational boost that can accompany serialization. But not all books are suitable to be serialized. Some books, if you've got them complete in your hand, have an impetus that will impel a reader to finish that book right then and afterwards hurry off to rave about it to everybody they know. But if you chop one of those books in pieces and make people repeatedly interrupt that impetus...? It might still work. Or it might hamstring the impetus effect and leave the reader wondering, about halfway through, why they'd bothered. ...The issue's a difficult one, and there's no way to tell whether a given work can stand up to being delivered to the reader in chunks until it's too late. So my advice would be to think carefully about the prospect before trying to implement it.
Anyway: wish the Beloved the best from me... and I hope their journey is as trouble-free as possible. :)

I am in dire need of more of that AU that The First years get The upperclassmen toxic traits,i realy want more of It,like;
A way to include octavinelle and scarabia, maybe like,3 First years(Ace,deuce,Jack) get some of azul's toxic traits, other Three(epel, ortho and sebek) get Jamil toxic traits and yuu get both
Second thing
More reactings please,i NEED The staff,ALL The dorms and even the relatives seeing The First years developing those toxic traits, the overblots+Trey and cater for deuce getting their toxic traits right back at their face i beg you🙏🙏
anything 4 u, baby.
(but for real, though, this is an AMAZING idea, love you so much for tilling the ground for my brainwormies, mwah mwah 😘)
(also, this might get REALLY long, so hang tight!)
it was just a seed at first — a tiny idea that stuck around despite the first-years not even realizing it was there. but as the poison from their actual housewardens starts to develop into something truly deadly, so does that seed. it shows up later... but it makes itself known nevertheless.
ace, deuce, and jack have all worked for azul at the mostro lounge at one point, and though it was a very brief moment in time, it was just long enough to worm its way into their heads.
it starts with ace trappola, who's already pretty slippery with his words. but working at the mostro lounge, taking subconscious note of all the underhanded deals azul is making, he starts to pick up new... skills, let's say.
it starts small, with ace starting to give out certain favors to his fellow freshmen to earn some money. if you give him ten thaumarks, he'll do one of your everyday chores for you — dusting your room, cleaning your bathroom, making dinner, what have you. if you give him fifteen thaumarks, he'll do your homework if you don't feel like doing it, or take class notes for you if you don't feel like showing up. if you give him forty, he'll help you with something less-than-moral and definitely against the rules (he did it once back at the atlantica memorial museum — he can do it again).
there's an obvious power imbalance in all of these scenarios, but ace effortlessly words in a way that makes it seem like it's a win-win situation, when in reality, it's more like a zero-sum game.
it gets to the point where ace builds a black-market sort of reputation, and all of the freshmen know that if you need something done, ace is the person to go to.
...but then, something shifts.
at some point, ace starts a black-mailing campaign for the people who paid for the forty-thaumark favor. if you don't want your secret — one that might get you expelled, suspended, or worse — getting out, then you can pay for ace's silence with a favor or more money.
the worst part is: there's no way out. if you try attacking ace, it'll seem like you assaulted him for no reason, since if you try to explain he was blackmailing you, you'll have to tell them what he was blackmailing you with, which you obviously can't do — or else what was even the point? the same rule applies if you try tattling on him to one of the teachers or the housewardens or anybody else. and ace is a better liar than most people will ever be in their lifetime, so it's a losing battle even if you do manage to get someone to take your side.
so if you want to cross the bridge, my sweet, you've got to pay the toll.
(it's not even about the money anymore, really. riddle's thirst for control and azul's desire for recognition have clashed inside of ace in the most violent way, and now, it's all about the power it gives him over other people. and after how powerless he's felt this entire school year, being thrown left and right by overblot after overblot with no say at all, this is a power trip he never wants to come back down from.)
but ace realizes he's making quite a few enemies with his little money-making strategy, and he needs someone to help him just in case someone does come up with a plan to wipe him out. i mean, just look at azul — even with all of the loopholes and leverages in the world, even he was taken down eventually without outside help. if he wants this to last as long as possible, he needs... incentive for people to listen to him.
his own jade and floyd.
his own red-and-black collar.
using his riddle rosehearts-born dominance, and taking advantage of deuce's trey-and-cater-born passiveness, ace convinces deuce spade — one of the strongest people he knows — to help him in his economic ventures.
and deuce, seeing this as a way for ace to vent some frustration and unwilling to be on the other end of ace's ire, hesitantly agrees.
he doesn't piece together that ace is acting suspiciously like azul, but he still recognizes his own role in this whole scheme. ace is running a business, right? and deuce has only ever worked in one business before. he remembers what jade and floyd were like back when he worked under them, and so he uses that experience to inform his new position.
deuce becomes known as ace's right-hand man. he'll hunt you down if you don't pay, and he's not afraid to use force to "compel" you to. there have been stories about cat beastmen getting thrown up into trees and being left there for hours. about students getting forks "accidentally" thrown at them in the cafeteria with such precision, it doesn't really feel like an accident. about a student with a spade on his face who can throw back any attack sent his way with just as much force.
and there's nothing you can do about it, because he's in service to someone who has made himself pretty powerful. ace's silver-tongue gets deuce out of any and all trouble he inevitably finds himself in — and is ace is so brutally honest, why wouldn't people believe him? so even if you try to do something to deuce, ace has his back no matter what — and he'll win almost every time.
you mess with deuce, you mess with ace, which is already bad enough. but if you fuck around with ace, you better be prepared to find out with deuce.
they're a pair — that's always been true. but never before has that fact been so threatening.
jack howl comes next. we all know how much jack despises octavinelle's business model. but, begrudgingly, he will admit there are a lot of things he can learn from octavinelle. and more knowledge is never bad. as long as he doesn't actually use it, it should be fine.
(jack is more dangerous than ace and deuce, in a way — his toxicity is insidious in a way it just couldn't ever be with them.)
with excellent hearing, eyesight, and memory, he silently keeps note of every bribe he hears being taken. every lie he knows is being told. every mistake that gets swept under the rug. it's not long before he starts actively looking for it. it's not long before jack's uncovered dirt on almost every freshmen in school. it reminds him a bit of his time working at the mostro lounge. but instead of memorizing orders from customers, he's memorizing all their dirty secrets.
it's to protect himself, jack reasons. after all, it was only his input that put a stop to leona and ruggie's plans back during the spelldrive exhibition. he's just... preparing for another disastrous event, that's all. it's just precaution. insurance.
if it's not, then he'll have to accept that leona's overblot bothered him more than he thought. that he was weak enough to let it.
(and jack can't face that yet.)
and if, once in a while, ace comes to him looking for a little bit of information, then well, that's just lending a friend some advice. nothing wrong with that.
epel, ortho, and sebek don't have any direct ties to jamil, but they are certainly... impressionable, aren't they?
sebek zigvolt is a bit dense, certainly, but even he can see how well jamil takes care of his master. and with a master that's as ditzy and forgetful and all-over-the-place as kalim, that can't be easy. even if they are merely humans, and their experiences can't even begin to compare when it comes to serving a fae prince, sebek reckons that he can learn a thing or two by observing them. so that's exactly what he does.
one day, when kalim spills food on the floor in a hilariously ridiculous move, sebek notices something few others ever would. jamil gives the tiniest twitch of annoyance — the same way silver, in all his stoicism, often does when sebek gets too loud — but then he's back to being perfectly dutiful and polite and says "i'll go get a napkin."
it's... admirable, honestly. sebek doesn't put it into practice right away, but it stays in his mind long after he first sees it.
and then, after malleus's overblot, sebek's emotions feel like they're on fire. after being stuck in a world where it took just the tiniest crack to shatter a perfect illusion, he's wary of nearly everything that disrupts his day. now every single slight against him, no matter how unintentional it may be, feels like a personal attack on his very life. but sebek can't show these ugly emotions so outwardly — that would be dishonorable behavior that could damage malleus's reputation. instead, he resorts to subtle methods that can't be easily traced back to him like putting in frogs in schoolbags and setting brooms on fire or replacing shampoo bottles with tar.
but his repressed feelings of anger start to build to the point where he's now feeling unprecedented resentment towards... well, almost everybody.
when sebek has very first negative thought about malleus in history class — "reckless bastard" — he instantly hates himself for it and throws up then and there because how dare he.
he tries to shut them out, but the more he does, the more these intrusive thoughts start to bombard him with their uncharacteristic cynicism.
he looks at lilia from across the breakfast table, and his first thought is: heartless liar.
he spots leona lying in the botanical garden and he thinks: brainless cretin.
he even sees jamil, walking through the halls, and his mind screams: manipulative bitch.
but sebek shoves it all down because he's in no position to say that. it gets to the point where he's walking around as a silent, unfeeling husk, because to be anything else would be like inviting his inner demons to visit him on the outside. he pushes his emotions down as far as they'll go, and that's just going to have to be enough to get him through the day.
ortho shroud begins to follow a similar principle. his idia-inspired pessimism has led ortho to see others as less like people and more like characters. it's easier to think of every school day as a dungeon in an rpg. it's easier to convince himself that the other students are taunting him because they're programmed to be that way than face the reality that they just don't like him.
but the problem with seeing life as a video game is that you start seeing others as just ways to complete your objectives. like npcs or maps.
and when it comes to using people, jamil viper is king. or, for ortho's purposes, the ultimate survival guide.
ortho shapes himself into a model night raven college student — kind, charming, and sweet for the teachers, but just mischievous and rude enough to still fit in with the students.
he goes to housewarden meetings with idia to "gain leadership experience", taking notes and hearing out of every single little idea he can get his hands on (these are the people who have not just survived, but thrived. they must be doing something right). one time, riddle even pats his head and praises him for his proactiveness.
his classmates adore him for always been willing to help and being so calm about even the worst outcomes.
ortho makes himself as available as possible to the rest of ignihyde, brushing off homework or studying to help them with whatever they need — fixing game consoles, wiring in controllers, checking the internet connection, et cetera.
eventually, everyone believes in him almost as fiercely as scarabia believed in jamil, once upon a time.
ortho doesn't like telling all of these lies, but it's necessary to protect himself. it's like grinding to earn coins until you have enough money to buy that special armor in the shopkeeper's store.
...or maybe it's more like those cheesy dress-up flash games ortho used to play all the time — fleshing out the perfect outfit and hairstyle and makeup that'll earn you the most points.
if people feel like they need him, he'll be able to breeze through school without any more problems. he's put the whole system on easy mode! it feels a bit like cheating, almost.
it is like a game, isn't it? it's fun.
(at some point, ortho forgets how to stop.)
as for epel... well, he knows that his sudden snappish behavior towards the other pomefiore students won't go unnoticed for too long. but this is one of his only ways of venting, so he needs it to go under the radar long enough for him to... to squeeze out all of this sudden venom that's built up in him.
epel's not oblivious. he knows how sebek and ortho have changed over the weeks, and he knows why. but epel can't pull off "repressed" like sebek, and neither can he suddenly turn into the best person ever like ortho. but they do have the right idea about taking inspiration from jamil, so epel can fall back on what there is left: gaslighting.
every time kalim blacked out, jamil blamed it on him being sick. every time someone thought kalim was being awfully uncharacteristic, jamil called it a "mood swing". every time someone asked jamil about why kalim was acting so weird, jamil claimed ignorance.
at least, that's what yuu tells epel.
and it's perfect.
so now, every time someone confronts epel about his overly critical behavior, he lies and says he's doing it for their own good. you need pressure to make a diamond, after all. and besides — vil won't settle for anything less than absolutely perfect.
("i'm just trying to catch your mistakes before he does. and i think you and i can both agree that i'm a lot nicer than he is about it.")
every time vil confronts epel about all of the complaints he's been hearing from the other students about how epel's been tearing down their ideas for outfits and hairstyles with no mercy, and disregarding all of their achievements as "not good enough" to be proud over, epel dons a confused face.
("vil, between studying for tests and the crazy physical regiment you have me do, i barely have time for myself. you honestly think i have the energy to criticize other people?")
epel even starts turning people against each other so they won't focus on him. epel subtly threatens to take away the upperclassmen's position in the hierarchy, which sets up the other underclassmen as a threat, and epel grouses to the underclassmen that the upperclassmen look down on them for not living up to pomefiore standards, under the guise of regular teenage bitching.
but all of this, combined with their self-entitlement, leads to a mini-war in pomefiore. but since this is, well, pomefiore, where being perfect and poised is the standard, the others make sure never make it obvious in front of vil or rook.
epel plays everybody like a fiddle, and ensures that none of it can be traced back to him. it's a good way to get out his frustration. and hey — it seems like everybody's upped their game along the way. vil seems pretty happy that everybody's improving in their efforts so greatly, practically overnight!
epel wakes up with a feeling of accomplishment everyday. for once, it seems he did something right.
now if only rook could stop looking so somber...
then we come to yuu, whose inner darkness has been left to fester all year. if people think they can treat them like a ragdoll, it's only fair they do the same.
there's a lot yuu doesn't have, but one thing they're really lacking is a bit of respect. that's what it means to be magicless in an arcane academy. you're at the bottom of the food chain.
and look at what a bit of self-interest can do for you! yuu studies in the library until late into the night, burning the metaphorical candle at both ends, learning everything they can about magic until they're more well-versed in it than most students in the school. yuu starts making potions that aren't nearly as good as azul's, but they're cheap and work well enough. they start making study guides for others with their new-found knowledge, even if they do bristle with the fact that a damned study guide is what caught them in azul's tentacles in the first place. they start learning anything and everything, clinging to whatever scraps of knowledge they can write down.
with this, they successfully make their case for why they should join ace and deuce's business. eventually, they're just as feared as they are among the other first-years.
but that's not enough for yuu. the power of fear is nice, but the power of controlling other people would be much more cathartic.
so that's what they do. while ace is more focused on monetary gain, yuu uses their mountains of blackmail to convince others to do whatever they want.
if crowley throws another ridiculous task at them, yuu simply hoists it off to somebody else to do. if ramshackle dorm needs a few repairs, it's only a matter of contacting a few people before a whole construction crew paid off by somebody else comes knocking at their door. and they'll do it, if they don't want to get kicked out of the school or have their reputation ruined.
but somehow, even with all of this, yuu sets themself up as the nicest out of their little trio. they're willing to let payments slide from time to time. they listen to their clients' problems. they take constructive criticism and always seem to improve in their potions and study guides based on feedback. and if you do do yuu a favor, they'll give you certain favors right back.
so even when yuu is a covetous, greedy, all-consuming shark, the students still think they're so very, very nice. because compared to ace and deuce, what else is there to think?
but this can only go on for so long. and yuu knows that.
one day, they get called to the headmage's office. yuu is already going through their contact list — a list that's quadrupled ever since they joined forces with ace and deuce — to see who'd be willing to do them a teensy little favor for them, but when they step through the door, they pause.
inside the office are all the housewardens, their vices, the teachers, and everybody else yuu has grown to know over the past year.
yuu narrows their eyes as riddle steps forward.
"yuu," riddle starts sternly, "from one housewarden to another, i believe we need to talk."

(i will address everyone's reactions in a reblog, because this is honestly getting really, really long, lol. but don't worry, the reactions are coming! 🥺)
(but i should mention that there is already a good reblog of the original post by @thenumberhuntress which addresses the upperclassmen's reactions that you can find here. go read it. it's peak.)
(once again, thank you for the great ask! this was fun to make!)

Hi Jes!!! Happy Sunday!!!
I’m curious; what do weekends usually look like with some of your obey me faves? Do you tend to just relax at home, or is your social calendar packed full? 😋

➤ sunday routines
characters: leviathan, asmodeus, barbatos, solomon & simeon, mephistopheles
content: sfw. established relationships with gn!reader implied. implied polyship with solomon and simeon. mostly domestic fluff/slice of life (slightly suggestive in solomon/simeon and mephisto's sections). wc: 0.7k.
a/n: thank you for the ask, andy! also my fav bias is showing.

Leviathan is dreading another long week of RAD classes. He invites you to watch TV in his room and if he gets the sense that you're anxious or just not in a great mood, he'll suggest that you pick what you both should watch. He won't complain even if it's some random movie or series he hasn't heard of or doesn't like. He plays his handheld with his head in your lap and every now and then he follows you to the kitchen for drink and snack refills.
Asmodeus meets you in the laundry room with his hamper full to the brim with clothes from the past week. He reminds you how to sort things to preserve their colours and the delicate fabrics. He even has his own special brand of laundry soap that just happens to be scented exactly to your liking. He's gotten angry at his brothers in the past for using it without permission, but he has no reservations about adding it to your own laundry. Usually he takes you to his room while you wait for the wash cycle to finish so you can relax. When it's time to fold and put the laundry away, he follows you to your room and helps if you'll let him (he insists you can take it easy on his bed or at his vanity while he puts away his own clothes). Afterwards, he takes your hands in his and examines your nails when he notices some of last week’s polish is chipped. He gives you a manicure, complete with a hand massage, before painting your nails with a fresh coat of polish for the week ahead.
Barbatos gets up early as usual and visits the street market. He already has his young master's dinner planned out and the ingredients on a list in his pocket, but he browses the daily offerings of fresh vegetables and imported foods while he debates what he wants to make for you. Sundays at the Demon Lord's Castle are usually more relaxed while the staff finish cleaning up from any gatherings the evening before. It'll give him enough time in his surprisingly flexible schedule to make lunch for both of you and it's the highlight of Sunday afternoons for both of you.
Solomon and Simeon invite you to Purgatory Hall to catch up on any last-minute homework you might've neglected or forgotten about. They're both extremely knowledgeable and kind when they explain concepts you might still struggle with, and you're glad you don't always have to bother Satan for his help. Solomon wants to charm you with a home cooked Sunday dinner, and he tries to sneak away from the table when he thinks Simeon is too focused on his work (and you) to notice. The best way to avoid culinary chaos is to offer to help both of them with dinner, and they're glad for your company. Sometimes they find your presence a little too distracting because they're hungry in more ways than one, but perhaps a break in one of their rooms can help.
Mephistopheles has a busy schedule and it's hard to predict what he'll be doing on any given Sunday. Sometimes he's helping his parents with errands related to their duties as high-ranking nobles in their community. Sometimes he's helping his younger brother with homework or they're playing games together. If he has no other obligations, he rides one of his favourite horses through the wooded trails behind his family's estate and lets you know when he's returned (he rushes to shower and dress before you arrive). He's more than happy to send a car to pick you up so you can have dinner with his family, or sometimes he's particularly greedy and sets up a private dining table in the lounge connected to his bedroom for the two of you. It's only when you're interrupted by the incessant vibrations of your D.D.D. later that night, and when he groans his frustrations into the crook of your neck, that you realize you lost track of time. Lucifer means well, but his timing is terrible. Some Sunday evenings, Mephisto accompanies you back to the House of Lamentation after instructing the driver discreetly to take the scenic route. Other times, you're glad you thought to bring an overnight bag with you and send Lucifer a hasty goodnight text before turning off your phone. You happily focus your attention back on the demon who pulls you onto his lap and eagerly picks up where he left off.

Hello friends! I have some extra money that I was planning to use on my 401k this month before this current stock market situation. But now, I can't decide if I should pay down my 401k loan (interest is paid to myself, but it's still a loan) or put some money in the stock market. I know paying debt is best, but in the short term, how do I balance paying extra on loans with potential stock market gains?
Ive read your other posts about stocks, but they seem more general, and this moment in time looks like a recession opportunity to earn????
I can't tell you how warm and fuzzy it makes us feel to hear you've done your homework. Well done, babycakes!
I think that our recession-related advice is a little more applicable in this situation than our investing-related advice. Because, uh... pretty sure we're approaching recession territory! And one of the best things you can do leading into a recession is to pay off your debt. This lowers your monthly expenses so you need less money coming in to live. Since the 401(k) loan isn't just debt, but debt to yourself, it's altogether healthy to pay it off at any time, but especially right now. So that's what we recommend.
But remember: personal finance is personal! So weigh your own pros, cons, and risk tolerance before deciding between options. You got this, babycakes!

let me down easy - jhs
I pairing: college jake ‘hangman’ seresin x female reader
I précis: you have a date and it’s not with jake :(
I content/warnings: college au, roommates to lovers (that haven’t gotten past the roommates stage yet), mentions of eating and food, mild jealousy, language
I word count: 1,001
I a/n: part of the roommate predicament !!!!
"What are you doing tonight? Do you wanna watch a movie or something?"
You freeze where you're unloading the dishwasher, purposely focusing in on Jake's "Beat Army" coffee mug--despite your hatred for the thing. anything related to the Navy is a reminder of your waning time together--so that you don't have to look at him.
"Uh, I think I'm doing something tonight." You mumble.
"With Natasha?" He wonders casually. "Y'all can hang here if you want."
"No, not with her." You clear your throat.
"Oh, okay."
"I'm," You swallow harshly, mentally grasping for words. You know you don't have to tell Jake anything, but you want to, hoping for some reason that maybe he'll stop you.
"I have a date." You say flatly.
Jake feels his heart plummet to his stomach, but he keeps his face neutral.
"Oh, that's nice." He smiles lightly. "Anyone I know or...?"
"I don't know." You say quietly. "His name's Brent, he's in a study group with me and Tash."
Jake is thinking that Brent is the most ridiculous name he's ever heard and brainstorming how he can join the study group for your marketing class when he's a physics major.
"Jake?"
"Huh?" He wonders, breaking out of his short daydream. "Sorry, what did you say?"
"I asked if you knew him." You relay his full name to Jake again.
"No, I don't." He smiles tightly.
“Oh okay.” You smile. “He just asked if I wanted to hang out sometime and I figured, why not?”
You could actually think of a hundred reasons why not, and most of them center around the fact that you have a huge, lovesick, crush on your fucking roommate.
You haven't spoken to Jake since earlier in the afternoon. He'd gone into his room to work on homework so you'd just hung out until it was time to get ready for your date.
You’re just going to get drinks and you’re not very enthused with the plans—more like the person—so you don’t go over the top or anything. You come out into the kitchen in an old sundress, before pulling out a frozen pizza from the freezer.
“Jake!” You call out. “I’m making pizza, do you want any?”
He comes out of his room, smiling lightly at you. “Hey, sweet thing,”
“Hi.” You smile brightly at him. God how much you wish you were staying home with him instead. Jake, who actually gives you butterflies in your tummy, who makes you smile for real, and who already understands you so well, you feel like you’ve known him your whole life.
Jake’s smile at seeing you quickly drops when you turn. You’re wearing a pretty sundress, one that he’s never seen before and you’re going out with another guy. It’s not fair to you, he can’t expect you to never date anyone if he doesn’t tell you how he feels, but he doesn’t want to put you in the unfair position of rejecting him—because there’s no way you could ever feel the same.
"Did you want some pizza?” You wonder again. “I’m gonna heat this and I figured you’d be eating soon anyway.”
“Yeah sure, thank you.” He smiles. “You need any help?”
“Nah, I don’t think so.”
You and Jake eat the pizza together on the island, and he notices how often you check the time on your phone.
“What time do you have to leave?” He asks, Adam’s apple bobbing nervously. “You know, uh, for your date?”
“Oh,” You sigh as if you’d forgotten about it. “In like twenty minutes.”
“He’s not picking you up?”
“We’re meeting there.” Jake doesn’t say anything for a moment and you look down at your phone once again, using a piece of paper towel to wipe your greasy fingerprints from the surface.
You look at him again, pleading in your mind for him to do something, say something, anything to stop you from going. “You,” You clear your throat. “What are you up to tonight? Anything fun?”
He scratches the side of his head, tilting it as if he’s lost in thought. “Nah, probably not. Might grab a beer with Bradley or something.”
“That sounds fun!” You offer. You hate this. You hate how your usually easy and comfortable exchanges with Jake, feel awkward and dry. You decide that it’s because of how awkward you’re being, the pre-date jitters are taking over your ability to talk normally with your roommate and friend.
Nope, that’s definitely not it.
“Yeah.” He agrees. “You sure you don’t need a ride or anything?”
“No, I’ll be fine Jake.” You smile. “But thank you for thinking of me. S’sweet.”
“Of course.” A sick twinge of jealousy pulls in his stomach when he spots you checking the time again. His gaze softens when you tug your bottom lip between your teeth. A soft, albeit quick, breath huffs through your lips and he smiles, hiding it under the guise of a cough.
“I should probably go.” You speak up, setting your phone down.
He nods and watches as you go to your room. You grab your shoes and bag, holding back from releasing a scream into the plush of your pillow.
Jake follows you to the door to lock up, once you’ve collected your phone and the lip gloss you’d grabbed from the bathroom. Jake doesn’t even want to think about your pretty pink gloss being smeared over another guy’s lips. His jaw clenches at the thought.
“Alright, well I’ll see you later Jake.”
He nods, swallowing harshly, nerves clawing up his throat. “You uh, you look real pretty darlin’.” He drawls, pink sprinkling his cheeks and ears.
“Oh,” You look up, pleasantly surprised. Not that Jake isn’t always sweet to you, but the way that he’s looking at you feels different—more intimate and softer than usual—but you’re probably just imagining that because you’re projecting your own feelings. “Thank you, Jake.”
He smiles once again. “Have a good night. I’ll see you later.”

summary: roommates tend to suck; not as much as this one does, though.
wc: 4.1k

buffed up like a jock, geeked up like a nerd bitch, i'm fly like a bird, i'm the shit like a turd
—NEW YEAR, SAME TRON by BABYTRON
dealing with random roommates has never been complicated for me. they usually keep to themselves or we become acquainted and keep in contact for emergencies or school-related things. it never goes past that.
i only dorm because it's convenient. my hometown is three hours away from the school, so commuting isn't a viable option. i also prefer not to live with my sperm donor and that hellspawn he calls a fiancée any longer than i already have.
i would've moved out and taken my brother with me ages ago had it not been for the awful job market and shit paychecks and i plan to move far, far away whenever i start my own law firm, but until then, i make do.
like i said, i don't usually mind having roommates—until today because this girl is a complete 180 from what i'm used to. she's loud, abrasive, vain, and completely inconsiderate of others. okay, well, i don't have evidence for that last part, but i will in due time.
she's been pissing me off since i opened the door. at first, i thought she might've been my new roommate’s girlfriend or a newbie asking for directions, but then she showed me her assignment letter.
man, i can't believe they stuck me with a chick! i mean, i don't care that she's a girl, but isn't there some kind of code when it comes to mixing guys and girls in dorms? maybe i shouldn't be surprised that housing messed this up considering how often they screw up my financial aid every year.
god, it's not even noon, and i'm already stressed out about shit that should have no bearing on my life.
i ponder my options with my hands in my head and elbows planted on my knees. i could contact the housing director, tell them i need a room or roommate swap. they'll put it in motion, and everything will be fine. right?
"hey, big bro! why you sittin' over there sulking? come join us!" Yuji yells, even though i'm only ten feet away.
i have the urge to scream as loud as possible, but instead, i breathe and stay put. i really don't feel like interacting with her more than i already have, so i refuse to do so.
"yeah, come join us," her voice chirps in, her tone almost teasing. i can practically hear the smirk on her face.
i lie down on the couch, groaning and keeping my hands over my face before they're pulled off to see Yuji beaming like the sun through the window, which are both obscuring my vision right now.
"sorry, big bro, you leave me no choice! get your ass up and say hi to Flo or i’ll do it for you!" he demands, grabbing my wrist and attempting to haul me up. he pulls a few times, grunting and using all of his effort but to no avail.
i look at him and blink. "who's Flo?"
he stops pulling on my arm and gasps, his mouth agape. "you don't know Flo?!" he shouts, waving his arms in the air frantically. "how do you not know your own roommate???"
i roll over onto my stomach, laying my head on my folded arms and shrugging. so that's her name, i think. can't say that's useless information, but i don’t see how it’s particularly important. didn’t find it important when i opened the door, and i don’t now.
Yuji squats down and starts rambling in my ear, gesturing wildly and shouting with excitement, "dude, Flo is so cool, big bro! she’s named after an Olympic runner from the 80s, which is funny because she tried running track in high school, but it didn't work out, so me and her are gonna train together! i'm gonna teach her how to run properly, and she said she'll help me with my homework and teach me how to drive—"
"yep, mm-hmm. sounds good, baby bro," i groan into my arms, closing my eyes, trying to recalibrate as my little brother blows my eardrum out. he continues ranting, unaware of the fact that i tuned him out as soon as he started talking. it’s unfortunate because i lack the energy and the heart to tell him to quiet down.
i love Yuji dearly. i think his passionate ramblings are entertaining and endearing. however, sometimes (most of the time), he doesn't know when to stop. probably because i enable him, so i have to be soft with him.
"hey, baby bro, do me a favor and—"
he cuts me off, finishing what i was gonna say, "inside voice. sorry, i was yelling again, wasn’t i?"
i nod, my eyes still closed and my head still planted on my arms. i let the silence surround me and bask in it.
of course, Yuji interrupts that as he pulls on my ankles, trying to drag me off the couch. i don't react, letting him tug until he gives up and lets go.
"damn it!" he heaves. "all of those exercise tapes and jiu-jitsu classes should've made me stronger by now. what the hell do you eat in a day, big bro?"
i shrug. "nothing that’ll make you bigger than me, baby bro."
"man, i know that! still worth trying, though,” he declares. he grabs my ankles a second time and pulls harder, but i only move about an inch off the couch. he lets go and huffs.
“fine, don't join us. guess you don't wanna hear how Flo used to be my camp counselor."
again, i say nothing to that, burying my face into the couch cushions but still eavesdropping on their conversation.
"dude, i can't believe you're here, Flo! you were literally my favorite camp counselor!"
"i can't believe you're my roommate's little brother. small world, isn't it?"
"it really is. you know, i miss that camp; some of the best times of my life. did you keep working there after i left?"
"yeah, i did, but i quit after i graduated high school. i miss it sometimes, too. we always had a blast together, didn't we, YuYu?"
"YuYu?" Yuji and i say simultaneously with drastically different reactions.
i sit up and look over the couch while Yuji laughs so hard he tips his chair over and falls to the floor. i glare at my roommate, suspicious as to where she got that nickname from and how she even knows Yuji well enough to use such a name.
she stares back at me and raises her hands in defense. "what? what i do?" she feigns her innocence half-giggling.
"Cho, cool it with the look! you're gonna scare her away!"
i look at Yuji still lying on the floor, clutching his stomach and chortling his little heart. it almost brings a smile to my face seeing my baby brother so tickled— almost.
my roommate grins. "yeah, i used to call him YuYu. we bonded over YuYu Hakusho the first summer i had him. i didn't even remember his actual name 'til now. i would call him Itadori, and he’d throw a fit every time, so we settled on YuYu like the show."
she leans over and looks at my brother sprawled out on the floor still. "'member that, YuYu?"
i certainly remember. Yuji was obsessed with that show for years, even after the show ended. i would record reruns on tape for him, buy him toys of the characters with my allowance, and teach him how to collect the manga. good times, those were.
but now i have an answer as to why Yuji wanted me to call him YuYu besides the show.
"yeah, i remember. dude, your first impression of me was me shouting 'spirit gun!' and pretending to shoot her with my fingers," he says, imitating the main character. he groans, pressing the ball of his wrists to his eyes before slowly picking himself and the chair up off the floor. "man, i was uber uncool back then."
i frown at his assertion and retort with mock offense, "you're calling me uncool for supporting you, then?"
Yuji nearly faceplants running over to me and almost knocks me to the ground, launching his body onto mine for a hug. he squeezes me, rubbing my back frantically to soothe me. "no, no way, big bro! you were super duper cool for helping me. never think you weren’t."
“i appreciate that, baby bro,” i say, pulling out of our embrace before flicking his forehead.
"ow!" he winces, rubbing the sore spot. "what was that for?"
"for talking about yourself like that," i scold. "you know better than to talk down on yourself, especially around me."
he pouts, muttering, "yes, big bro."
i hear Flo snickering and almost shoot her another stare, but Yuji wouldn't like that, so i refrain. plus, Yuji had a point: my look can scare people away. i'm already a tall, lanky, tatted goth; i don't think giving my roommate the crazy eye wouldn't keep the peace very well.
she didn't seem bothered earlier, though.
"wow, you've got such a good big brother, Yuji," Flo comments. she smiles, glancing over to me. "a very caring brother at that."
"speaking of a caring big bro," Yuji begins, slowly inching his way out of my personal space with a mischievous look, his hands clasped behind his back as he rocks on the balls of his feet. "about your car..."
"no, Yuji," i immediately shut him down. "you can't drive my car."
"why not?" he whines, drawing out his words. "dad won't take me, and i'm only going to Yukon Lake for the senior trip, and it's not far."
"doesn't matter, Yuji. you don’t have your license yet. if you get pulled over, i won’t be able to help you. plus, i need my car to get to work and back. if anything, i can just take you and Suguru can pick you up."
my brother throws his hands up, groaning, "fine! i gotta go, anyway. i got a track meet soon."
he pulls me into another quick hug. i give him a forehead kiss and ruffle his hair before we part. "bye, baby bro. call me or come by if you need anything else."
"like money for the senior trip?" he asks with a lilt and a wide grin.
i chuckle, "we'll see about that."
he sucks his teeth, spinning on his heel in mock disappointment. "man, you suck, big bro."
“love you, baby brother.”
Yuji walks over to Flo and hugs her. "i was good to see you again," he chirps.
"good to see you too, YuYu," she replies. "let me know when your next track meet is. i wanna watch you race."
"will do!"
Yuji gathers his stuff and salutes us as he heads out the door. "bye, Flo! love you, big bro! see you later!"
he slams the door behind him hard, making my ears ring from the aftersound. that kid needs to lay off the protein powder.
"so, camp counselor, huh?" i ask, giving my roommate a small smirk.
Flo scoffs, "yeah, we don't talk about those times. but, wow, you being YuYu's brother? never would've guessed."
i cock an eyebrow at her. "what's that supposed to mean?"
she shrugs. "nothing. just didn't expect it," she giggles. "y'all are total opposites."
i nod in agreement. "we are definitely complete opposites."
Flo stands up and goes into the fridge. "it's cute, though," she says, pulling out another drink and closing the door with her hip. "it's like Dexter and Dee Dee. he's the hyper, social sibling that always messes with you, and you're the stoic, serious one who doesn't want to be bothered."
she walks over to the couch and plops down next to me. i raise an eyebrow then quickly put it down. i guess her sitting next to me is tolerable when she's not badgering me.
"so, mr. stick-up-the-ass, what's your major?" she asks.
i ignore her attempted insult and reply, "criminal justice. planning on being a prosecutor then a judge."
"oh, wow! totally did not expect from you."
i squint at her. "you're profiling me pretty hard today, huh?"
she smirks, looking ahead of her. "i'm just saying i didn't think you'd be here for criminal justice. i got like, STEM major vibes from you."
i scratch my head. "what the hell is STEM?"
she turns and gives me a look of disbelief. "you don't know what STEM is? seriously?" she laughs. "it stands for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics."
i huff out of my nose, wondering where she got the idea that i was studying any of those boring ass things. "nah, not me. maybe science and math here and there, but other than that, no. that shit's for dorks."
"hey!"
i snort, ducking my head down so that she won't notice. i didn't think that comment would strike a nerve in her of all people, but that was too presumptuous of me.
"math is so not for dorks! it's super important for daily things and jobs. you have to know basic math to be a cashier," she argues defensively.
"mm-hmm," i hum, a few snorts escaping my nose. "very important. imperative, even."
she tuts, shaking her head. "you think it's funny, but wait 'til you need to calculate statistics or analyze data sets."
i throw my hands up and give up on hiding my laughter. "okay, princess, you got me there," i say, grinning cheekily as her face screws up in irritation.
"you must be one of those STEM dorks then," i say, huffing another laugh and reaching for the remote on the table. i'm sure i can watch a little Jeopardy before i leave for work in a few hours.
unfortunately, i'm met with a space where the remote was. i fumble around, looking down and seeing my hand touch nothing but wood. i look up at the tv to see the channel already changed. i sit there frozen for a moment. i slowly look to my right.
flipping through channels and shrugging with a nonchalant smile, Flo says, "sorry, buddy, wanna watch my soaps 'fore i leave."
i sit back and retract my hand, letting it drop into my lap. my jaw clenches. "i wanted to watch Jeopardy," i mumble.
she reclines, crossing her feet on top of the coffee table. "dude trippin' on me for defending math, but this fuckin' guy wanna pout about Jeopardy? tuh! okay, dude. fuckin' major dweeb alert over here," she says to no one in particular, jabbing her thumb in my direction.
i don't even dignify that with a response. i stuff my hands in my pockets and close my eyes to calm myself. i can feel something spiraling inside, some mental upset for my routine being rudely interrupted by a bratty woman with little regard for her insolence affecting others.
okay, maybe that's a bit much to hold a candle to that statement right now. however! i don't plan on taking that back until i'm proven wrong.
"yes, it's on!"
i open one eye to see what she put on; Desperate Housewives, i gather from the title screen. ew, not even my mom would watch this obscenely stupid shit.
sick of the television assaulting my eyes, i look over at Flo, taking in her figure. her crossed legs accentuate her plush, dimpled thighs. her manicured nails make her hands look dainty. her hair runs past her shoulders down and her bangs stick to her forehead, covering up part of her face. she's wearing a red color on her lips with a dark outline on them; that makes the mole under her nose stand out more.
she may be an obnoxious brat with an attitude problem, but she has an unorthodox charm about her—an allure that makes me unnaturally curious and churns my stomach. it's an unfamiliar, nauseating feeling, but i can't say i mind it while i'm looking at her.
let's look away before she notices, i think, blankly looking at the wall behind the television and letting my mind drift to other things.
"ahem!"
i slowly turn to Flo with a raised eyebrow. "need something?" i ask.
"why you still here? don't you have like, work to go to or somethin'?" she waves me off dismissively.
i suck my teeth, but unfortunately, she's right. i get up and head for the shower to leave her alone.
on the one hand, i sorta understand since she's locked out of her room for now. hopefully, her friend comes and they leave while i'm getting ready, giving me time to do what i want before work.
this is gonna be a long semester, i sigh internally, trudging to the bathroom and shutting the door behind me.
steam trails behind me as i exit the bathroom, drying my hair with a towel and wearing another around my waist. i sigh in relief, feeling refreshed and rejuvenated. nothing like a good shower to wake you up.
i stand in front of the hallway sinks, looking in the mirror for a moment, admiring my physique. i'm not particularly self-conscious, but i wouldn't say i'm vain, either. i do like to see my reflection just to check what's going on and glance over what other people can see.
i rake a hand through my damp hair, taking notice of its length. i've been trying to grow it out, and progress is decent so far. i can put my hair into even spiky buns as opposed to a few months ago.
i smirk at my reflection, throwing a playful wink before brushing my teeth.
"man, what the fuck was that?"
i stop to listen for a second. is that Flo talking? who is she talking to?
being the nosy little shit i am, i walk into the living room, still brushing.
her back is facing me, but she isn't moving whatsoever, as if she hadn't just yelled at the top of her lungs just now. she looks invested—hooked even. it's almost creepy how quiet and still she is while watching this horrid shit, though her dedication is admirable.
i switch between watching the show and watching Flo react to it for a while.
i try to follow the plot but find myself lost every five minutes, so i look at Flo. she becomes expressive any time something happens, clapping her hands as she cackles or jumping out of her seat and screaming at the screen. i can't lie, she's not entertaining me more than the show because, admittedly, the show bores me, but her reactions make it bearable.
she lets out a gasp and yells, gesturing angrily, "bitch, fuck you just standing there lookin' stupid for? say something!"
she kisses her teeth and throws her hands up dramatically, rolling her eyes and flopping back against the couch. i chuckle, my shoulders shaking. she's a real killer one-woman act.
"what's so funny, emo boy?"
i shift my gaze to my roommate. she still has her back to me, so i walk over to the kitchen sink and stick my head under the faucet to catch the water.
i rinse the toothpaste out my mouth and laugh between words as i say, "you."
"what about me?"
i catch more water and rinse my mouth out again before turning back to her, leaning my arms on the counter. "the way you're acting watching this shit. it's just funny."
"mm hmm," she hums, still not looking over at me. "sure."
i smirk, tempted to tease her more, but continue brushing my teeth. she's got a real bite to her, that one. it might be starting to grow on me.
knock, knock, knock, knock!
her face quickly lights up as she shouts, "i hope that's my bestie!"
a boisterous, muffled voice responds from the other side of the door, "you already know who it is, bitch!"
my roommate squeals and hops off the couch, sprinting to the door and flinging it open. more squealing happens. i dart my stare between the girls embracing and jumping around and screaming about how much they missed each other. i'm mildly annoyed at how loud they are.
"oh my god, i was so lonely without you here," the other girl says, fake-sobbing on Flo's shoulder.
Flo chuckles, patting her friend's back. "i know, babe. you're like, my only friend right now, so i was super duper lonely without you, too," she replies. the girls pull away and smile at each other.
Flo's friend then asks, "now, where is this roommate of yours? i'm tryna meet him."
"oh, he's right behind..."
Flo trails off. i pay no attention to it, rinsing my mouth out for the last time. as i look up at them, i see that their eyes are already on me. Flo's face morphs into one of shock then into disgust while the other girl's face morphs into lust.
i cock an eyebrow, confused and left clueless as to why they're staring so hard, especially with two entirely different expressions.
i notice their gazes are pointed down, so i follow, and—suddenly, i remember where i am and what i'm wearing (or rather, what i'm not wearing).
two girls are gawking at me wearing only a towel around my lower half. fuck.
i freeze, my face burning red before i finally move my ass and book it to my room.
i close my door a little too hard, pressing my back against it. i lock the door just for good measure. i sigh in relief, my face still heated from that little mishap. i pull out my uniform and start getting dressed for work.
as i dress, i press my ear to the door a few times, see if they're talking about me. i can barely hear what they're saying, but i make out a couple of phrases: "sexy as fuck," "stupid asshole," and "riding that pony." that last doesn't make much sense, but i can put two and two together.
after i'm fully clothed and presentable, i walk back out, work bag slung over my shoulder.
the girls turn to me again, Flo standing with crossed arms and pinched brows while her friend blatantly runs her eyes up and down my body. i avoid them, trying not to show my embarrassment by keeping a straight face.
the friend tilts her head and says, "Flo, i think you should officially introduce me to your roommate."
Flo huffs, clearly aggravated, "okay, whatever." she points to one of us as she introduces us to each other. "Kiki, this is Choso. Choso, Kiki."
"hmm, Choso, huh?" the friend asks, batting her dramatic eyelashes. Flo immediately hits her on the shoulder and whispers, "cut that the fuck out!"
"Choso Kamo," i repeat, reaching out for a handshake. the girl clears her throat and accepts it with a firm grip. "Kian'e Thompson. i go by Kiki." she throws a wink in an attempt to be seductive; unsurprisingly, it does not affect me, only giving her a polite smile before letting her hand go.
my gaze lingers on my roommate. i note her defensive stance: crossed arms, jutted hip, tapping foot. she's practically burning holes into the side of her friend's face, too. i can tell she wants to scold Kiki and stop any advances toward me (unsuccessfully, might i add). she seems weirdly bothered by it. maybe i'm reading too much into things.
i slink away to the kitchen. i start looking in the fridge, taking note of what i'm out of. i know we have no more soda, so i should stop by Kmart and get some more after work.
"what'd you want for lunch, Kiki? cuz i'm hungry as fuck."
"i'on even know, man. i was lookin' forward to those brunch platters at Stacie's, but i can't pay that."
i see an old Chinese food carton in the back. that can't be any good now. i take that out and set it on the counter to throw away. guess i'm cleaning out the fridge while i try to find anything edible to bring for lunch.
as i'm looking and cleaning, i hear the pair whispering to each other. Kiki not-so-subtly says to Flo, "you gon' snitch on me if i get his digits?"
i hear Flo land another smack on her friend's arm. "girl, what the fuck? yes, i absolutely will snitch on you. also, he can hear you, dumbass."
you're not so quiet yourself, i think.
"man, like i give a fuck! you betta get at him 'fore i throw some—!"
"o-kay, we're gonna go now. be back whenever!" Flo says in a rushed tone, pulling Kiki by the arm out of the dorm room. they argue under their breaths as the door closes behind them.
i take a long look at the door before letting out a deep sigh. i close the fridge, grab my keys off of the front door hook, and head out for work.

ੈ✩‧₊˚ svt hyung line: your first date
╰┈➤ summary: your first date! (obviously) so cute
╰┈➤ warnings: svt x afab, kissing (coups, wonwoo, kind of jun)
╰┈➤ a picture is provided for every member, just for you to visualize the setting!
250-400 words per member!
_________ ׂׂૢ་༘࿐
scoups / seungcheol
he asks for your number after spotting you at a bbq restaurant. he carefully plans out the perfect picnic date, followed by a night walk by han river! he heavily interviews mingyu on how to make salads, pastas, and anything else he thought you might like.
"you must really like this girl, hyung"
the day comes. he decides to wear simple jeans with a black shirt and sweater (to give to you later ofc!). his legs feel like jelly and become weak with nervousness and excitement, replaying the moment you made eye contact with him in the restaurant and softly smiling to himself. he opens the door and sees you in a stunning outfit, taking a moment to admire you and takes in a breath of the fresh spring air.
"shall we?" he said with sparkles in his eyes.
when you and cheol pick a location under a tree, he gloats about all the delicious food he made you that morning. it's a bit awkward, but the way he talks and looks at you make you at ease.
after having the food he made, it has now become night. like his plan, he gives you his sweater that is way too big for you. he laughs and teases you, but you're distracted by the smell of his cologne wrapped around your body. you blush, and take his hand.
after many laughs and serious conversations, he suddenly turns in your direction and looks into your confused eyes.
"have i told you that you look beautiful tonight?" he says in an almost whisper, a smirk plastering on his face.
he moves one of his hands to the back of your neck, the other moving to your waist, and leans in for a soft kiss.
_________ ׂׂૢ་༘࿐
jeonghan
you approach him, but he falls harder. you and jeonghan had a few classes together, and you've waved and made casual small talk a couple times. at first it seemed like nothing - just a classmate. but as your conversations grew more personal, you could sense something was different. did jeonghan think the same?
you decided to put it to the test. after class, you went to his locker and asked if he wanted to study at the library together that day. he jokingly asked if this was a date, and you being flustered, bluntly answered:
"of course not! i just need help with homework."
he agreed, and you came to the conclusion that he didn't feel the same way. until you saw him have a huge smile on his face when he turned to his locker.
at the library, jeonghan kept stealing glances at you. you caught on quite fast, and looked at him back, holding eye contact.
"what, am i that handsome?" he teased.
focused on studying, you didn't pay attention to him for a while. when you do peep a glace, you can see that he's asleep on top of his math books. you were first mad, because he promised to help you with your english assignment. but seeing his long eyelashes cover his cheeks, and his slow breathing made you stare at him for longer.
when you turned your attention back to your textbooks, he opened his eyes a tiny bit, and smiled when he saw you stuck on a problem.
"she looks so pretty." he thought, while pretending to wake up.

you meet on a plane, coincidentally sitting next to each other. he smiles when you sit down, and makes small talk while you wait for the plane to lift off. he messages jeonghan for desperate help, wanting to ask for your number but too scared to approach you. he ultimately does get your number, and asks you on a date when you land in korea.
he decides to take you to a street market on a hot summer day. he takes you around different vendors, asking if you want anything at each one. jisoo runs across a bracelet stand, and immediately starts choosing one for both of you. he finds one with a cute bear charm and buys two, running back to you and showing them off.
"what do you think?" he asks, beaming with excitement.
you obviously love them and wear it on your right wrist.
it was getting way too hot, so you two decided to take a break and go to a restaurant for dinner. you have meaningful conversations and have a good laugh when he talks about the time when he poured a huge glass of ice water down seungkwans back, and funny times while living with the members. as time went on, you became comfortable with him.
at the end of your date, he insists you come back to his place for ramen and a movie, but you politely decline as you had some work to finish up.
"i guess that'll be our next date, then." you say, lighting his disappointed face up with a huge smile.
"deal."

jun / junhui
you and jun are old friends. you've been friends for 5 years now, and jun hasn't felt attraction to you at all - until now.
at one of your usual hang outs with the rest of your friend group, he pulls you aside from the bar and leads you outside. the streetlamp lit up his face, revealing his sharp nose and eyes. he asks if you want to come over the next day and watch his new drama, exclusive fairytale.
"oh, and it's a date." he says confidently, waiting to see your reaction.
you've also liked junhui for quite some time now, so you were excited to say the least. you happily agree and head back inside to finish up the night out.
you arrive at his house with a comfy but flattering outfit, nervous and excited to see him. you ring the doorbell and the door immediately opens. he welcomes you to his apartment and you head inside and get settled, while he's busy on his phone.
"what are you doing on your phone, jun?" you ask.
"ordering food for our date! what do you wanna eat?"
you decide to order pizza with fried chicken and coke, which he happily orders while smiling at you.
when the food arrives, he turns on the show and you eat the food while catching glances at him. a romantic scene between him and the female lead character plays, and you glare at jun who looks at you nervously.
"is this why you wanted to show me this, so i can get jealous?" you sulked jokingly. he laughs it off and says something you didn't expect.
"wanna recreate it?"
authors note: OMG i had so much fun writing jun's part... yes pls lets recreate it jun

hoshi / soonyoung
you met at a dance class held by hybe. he was one of the teachers, and had his eyes on you the whole time. by the end of the class, he was always standing beside or near you, and complimenting you on your dance skills. he pulls you aside and asks for your number (he makes an excuse and says that he would like to collab with you sometime, and not in by any means romantic).
later in the month, you meet him a couple more times to discuss possible collabs and choreos. during the most recent "meet-ups":
"dino cancelled our plans on the weekend.. i wonder what i can do instead?" he asks you with hopeful but nervous eyes.
you suggest asking one of the other members to go out, which he immediately declines for some odd reason. his face scrunches up, thinking of something.
"i want to go with you! lets go bowling this saturday."
surprised by his sudden proposal, you get flustered. it was true that you had developed some level of feelings for soonyoung after talking with him every week, but you didn't expect this.
on the date, both of you had a BLAST. it was a mix of pure rivalry, and taking short glimpses when he was drinking water, or when he wasn't looking at you. hoshi felt the same way. he teased you for struggling to pick up the bowling ball, and having a slip when you were returning to your seat.
he insisted to drive you home. on the drive back, the laughter continued. the moon was big and bright, with seventeen's "imperfect love" playing on the speaker - it was perfect.

wonwoo
being the new girl in school, wonwoo had his eyes on you from the start. he isn't the most extroverted type, so he always kept his distance from you. his friends are always teasing him when they catch him staring at you from across the room. it's a big deal for wonwoo to like someone - but it was an easy decision with you.
after school, he approaches you and asks you to a casual dinner (this was when you guys started talking and had become friends). you weren't too sure at first, because you wanted to focus on your studies.
"i guess i'll give him one chance." you thought, and agreed.
he booked a reservation at a pretty prestigious restaurant to impress you. he picks you up at your house, and it's super awkward on the ride there. by the time you two sit down, he's practically begging for the menu just to have something else to talk about.
suddenly, after the food arrived, you two hit it off. conversations were flowing, you were comfortable, laughs were shared, and your feelings for him grew.
when you were talking about one of your classes at school, he stared at you with the most sincere you've ever seen him. flustered, you pause.
"why, what's wrong?" he asks
"nothing's wrong - i'm just admiring you."
after a successful dinner, you walk along the path of a park lit with fireflies and street lamps.
"can i hold your hand?" he asks
instead of replying, you interlock his hand with yours, feeling his warmth travel up your arm. he lifts up your hand and gives it a soft kiss.

woozi / jihoon (woozi x producer y/n)
it all started when you sat next to each other in a meeting. you really looked up to him as a producer, and wanted to get to know him better (in a platonic way). after the meeting had ended, everyone gathered for refreshments outside of the room. you asked jihoon for his number, which he happily gave you. he also loved your work and looked forward to meeting with you soon.
you met several times at hybe again, briefly having conversations or just waving when you both were busy. jihoon has had the opportunity to work with you for projects and future plans, and was always the one to initiate new ideas and new meetings. he was just excited to see you.
although both of you had feelings for each other, you couldn't risk professionalism in the work place. so you set it aside. until one day, when you two were alone in his studio, he said the unexpected.
"look - i know this is unprofessional, but i can't help it. would you like to go on a date some time?"
you obviously agreed, having your eye on him for a long time. the plan was to go to an aquarium after work, then return back to finish up some more work.
the aquarium was a walking distance, so it was pretty easy to choose a day. you had a great time at the aquarium, joking with him and just staring at the fish tanks for a long time without a word.
it was time to head back to the hybe office. when you got outside, it was raining. hard. you both looked at each other and bursted out laughing.
"i guess we have to make a run for it!" he said excitingly. he grabbed your hand, and counted down from 3.
"3... 2... 1... go!!"
you ran through the rain, feeling cold splatters on your face and laughing out loud with the perfect guy.
authors note: this is literally so cute.. i saw that picture on pinterest and knew that it had to be woozi :')

Oh hey, another draft that I have no idea where this was going. - The sequel
Yet another thing that I found in drafts that I have no idea where I was going with it. Based on the title of the document I know it was based on Gang of Youth's Do Not Let Your Spirit Wane. Past that, not a clue.
Steve doesn’t have the same dream every night, but three to four times a week the dream comes. Sometimes Steve is out on the waves with Kono, they’re between swells and waiting for the perfect wave. Steve knows it’s coming, can feel it in his bones. Chin is back on the beach, Steve can see his dark head moving back and forth as he helps Danny corral Grace. They’re preparing lunch, grilling something that he can almost catch a whiff of, layering over the smell of Kono’s sunscreen and sea brine. Grace is kneeling on the sand, she’d told Steve her plans to build an epic sandcastle, a task he’d agreed to help her with after lunch. She had sketched out what she was looking to build as she’d told him about it earlier that morning, the moat she planned to dig around it and fill with water. He can hear Danny’s laughter out here on the waves and he exchanged a smile with Kono. He’s happy.
He and Danny are moving around the kitchen doing an easy well-rehearsed dance as they prepare dinner. Grace is sitting on the counter, Danny’s daughter through and through, working on geography homework, asking Steve questions about the places he’s been. Steve carefully edits his stories so they’re safe for Grace’s consumption. He tells Grace about how blue the water is in Nassau, how green the jungle is in Vietnam, how the spice market in Marrakesh is still one of the best things he’s smelled and ignores the way Danny hip checks him when he knows Steve has edited the truth for his baby girl, the details he’s deliberately leaving out. He’s happy.
Steve and Danny are in bed, the sun just peeking over horizon; Danny’s back a long line of heat against Steve’s front. Danny bitches about being the little spoon but never hesitates to put himself into a position where Steve can curl around him. Steve’s nose is buried in Danny’s neck, breathing in the gentle smell of Ivory soap and laundry detergent. It’s too early to be awake but Steve is, and he’s glad for it, glad to be able to live in this moment. Danny mumbles something, words indistinct. Danny talks in his sleep not often, but a quirk Steve was delighted to discover the first time he and Danny had shared a bed. Nothing Danny says ever makes sense, but then Steve says that about Danny’s waking comments as well. He’s happy.
The dreams always, always turn. Drug runners bent on taking out Five-O storm the beach, bullets kicking up sand. Steve and Kono are paddling back into the beach as fast as they can, but it’s like the shoreline keeps moving further and further away. Steve can see Danny running for Grace, can hear him yelling for Grace to run, but they both know she won’t be able to outrun the bullets. He watches them tear through her little body and he wants to be sick. Sees Danny’s anguished face before he’s gunned down too and they’re still too far from shore. He’ll never get to them in time. There’s a knock on the back door that Steve answers, swatting Danny’s hand away from slice of carrot he’s trying to filch, Grace laughing at both of them for their childish behavior. There’s no one on the other side of the door, confused Steve moves further away from the house, calling out if anyone’s there. He heard the high-pitched whine just before the house explodes, the rocket coming impossibly from the water, a boat maybe, anchored just off shore. He knows that it’s impossible for Danny or Grace to have made it, but he still turns and tries to get back into the house, the heat from the flames burning his skin, ears still ringing from the blast. He’s pulling Danny closer, thinking about trying to slip back into sleep, just on the verge of it when he hears something from the floor below them. Glass breaking, footsteps on the stairs. Steve feels like he’s moving through molasses as he turns over to the bedside table, reaching for the gun he keeps in the top drawer, but he’s too late. He hears the small pop of the silenced round just as he feels the bed jerk and turns, still moving so slowly to see the hole in the back of Danny’s head. There’s no one else in the room with them and when he looks down he sees the gun in his own hand, silencer in place.

BTT#1: Details & More
Kicking off a new series of posts called Behind The Translation (BTT), where I'll ramble about what I think makes translations work and what goes into mine. They'll feature more general topics on fan translation (like this first one), but I also plan on including deep dives into translations I've done as supplementary reference for those that are interested in that. I'm aiming to have these posts be interesting for anyone, regardless of if you do translation/know several languages or if you consider yourself more of a viewer!
Without further ado, let's get into what goes into translations (especially song translations) as a whole: details & more.
Whether you know the source language or not, sometimes a translation just doesn't seem to make sense. It's not even necessarily a mistranslation-- something just doesn't seem right, and you can't always figure out why that is. It doesn't hit right, it feels off.
When doing translation, there is a lot to account for. It's not just about taking language 1 and converting it into language 2. Depending on the person and the content, there can be a lot of caveats and details to keep track of, and sometimes you have no choice but to. I'll be listing a number of points to pay attention to when looking for or doing translation. In my experience, missing out (or not making a conscious decision on) any of these points can cause a translation's quality to suffer.
Intent
Before anything else, the intent of the translator is important. How true do you want to stay to the source material? Do you want to do a transliteration or something more akin to localization? Do you care more about the message, or more about literally reflecting the source material? You have to decide this before anything else, otherwise you'll risk fighting yourself down the line. Making this choice keeps things consistent both for you and your readers.
As a side note, especially translation from Japanese can catch a lot of heat from people that much prefer transliterations.
Decide for yourself what kind of content you want to see or what kind of content you want to provide.
Don't go to the fish market for bread, and don't become a bakery when you want to provide fish.
Context
For the sake of consistency, there's another choice to make: how on top do you want to be of references? In the case of the GBF song niche, majority of the songs feature references to the characters' units/kits and lore/story. Songs like Pledge of the Tempest and Cafe de Parinai have a lot of references to the character lore, but also had strong character voices/speech quirks to maintain.
While in some cases you can get by with just translating it straight, it might make your translation less accurate or even plain wrong.
You don't always have to sweat the finer details, but catching on and implementing these details will almost always elevate your work.
Even professionals can and will miss the details from time to time, even issuing changes to reprints if severe enough. This means you're not just doing translation: depending on how far you want to go, you have to do your homework on the broader context of the story being told. For bigger projects, it's entirely valid to keep a glossary of recurring words and themes to reference for consistency-- and this can be helpful even for smaller projects if it saves you the headspace.
Connecting cultures
Related to context, something often overlooked is the sheer amount of cultural references implemented in stories. This goes beyond the context of the story itself or the characters themselves. Cultural references, customs, specific food, religious references, landmarks, the list goes on. Again, this is additional homework you may be doing a lot of depending on what it is you're translating. How you end up localizing or translating this depends entirely on you and the source material. A good example of this is the song Small Fish in a Small Pond, which is loaded with religious references.
It's also important to keep your target audience in mind, if you have one.
In some cases, it might be better to call a supermarket a supermarket instead of opting for what's probably an American or European chain, potentially alienating readers. However, as the world has gotten more intertwined, translation has changed alongside it. Years ago, 7/11 wouldn't be acceptable for translation. Even "konbini" would be translated as a supermarket for accessibility. It's another balancing act.
Language
On the topic of songs, lyrics can get quite poetic. They may (half) rhyme. they'll follow a cadence. Even viewers that don't catch onto the exact meaning of the lyrics may feel that your energy or cadence differs. Straight translations are fine, but allow yourself to play with the rhythm of sections-- this is also true for written content. Even buildups and punchlines in books are laid out in a way that follows a rhythm. Something that shows character, anticipation, energy. Songs like Welcome to the PARADE! and STARDUST CHILDREN greatly benefited from the translation paying more attention to the rhythm, energy, and rhymes of the lyrics-- it retained personality of the original without feeling wordy.
You'd think I won't have to mention this given translation is about bridging languages, but I think it deserves to be highlighted. Translation is a great way to get immersed in language and force your brain to think about how lines work in different languages. What many seem to forget is that this means you have to at least know one of the languages intimately. While it's true you may learn something new for any of the involved languages, you'll want your vocabulary to grow alongside your work. Something phrased beautifully in one language, or cleverly referenced, won't hit if you cannot find the right words for it. Far too many times have I seen translations with the right idea that aren't even trying to be literal, they merely cannot seem to find the right words, causing the translation to fall flat. Again, we learn more about both languages the more we work with the languages in question. It's a work in progress, always. This isn't meant as an insult: it's proof that working with languages is an art, too.
When doing translation, don't forget you're working with more than one language. They deserve equal attention.
I'd highly encourage anyone who's interested in translation to not just find out what it says; find out what it means. A hundred words couldn't be enough to describe some things, and other times a single word can echo on forever.
Translation and you
Translation is fun. (Fan) translation is needed and appreciated. For those interested in offering translations, I'd say go for it. Whether it's just for yourself, or your group of friends, or for a bigger platform. It's a great way to learn and be more involved with media you love. It can be daunting, and you may find yourself stuck sometimes-- but that's part of it. You can make a small difference. Your work doesn't have to be perfect from the start, especially not if you keep things small. Stay humble, and stay openminded.
If you're on the opposite side and rely on translation to get more content to consume: be kind. Decide what kind of translation you look for, and support those that offer it without bringing others down. Translation can be daunting, and the reception of it doubly so. We've already lost so much enthusiasm, lost so many translators to offhand comments and demands. Keep your fandom alive by being supportive.
You can make a small difference.

♡Dear Diary♡
Heyyy girliesss I hope this past week was amazing for you and you accomplished alot of things this week has been so much fun for meeee<3333
♡Education♡
I started summer classes and joined accountanting immediately dropped it lol I just wanted something fun and easy for the summer semester because I need extra credits but when I saw the homework and all the work I was like yeahhhh no lol. The professor seemed a bit mean too. I dropped it quickly and chose marketing but the issue now is because I joined the class last minute the professor put in a withdrawal form because I had not attended previous classes so now I need to email the professor and get it withdrawn if I can take eight credits during the winter semester I would love to instead of taking any classes this summer semester.
♡Mental♡
I’ve been in a much better mindset I am so happyyy this summer has been so fun so far and I’ve just been going with the flow and doing things that make me uncomfortable that are for my betterment. My friend and I have been swiping things off of our bucket list and I'm excited forrr the rest of this summer<33333.
♡Physical♡
I posted my blog post on “improving your relationship with food and movement.” I’ve been working on my relationship with food and movement and on this journey, it is hard at times and that's okay. I have days when I want to go back into bad habits but this week I’ve been able to push myself from doing so. I was able to go out this past week and order foods I like and not force myself to eat a salad(I love salads but you get what I mean). I enjoyed my meals and practiced moderation while outside. I've created meal plans for me to follow they have helped me get my protein higher. My body is transforming I recently took a video and was shocked by the changes in my body since march I love it and can't wait to see it by the end of the year<333.
♡Hobbies♡
I filmed my YouTube video this week and It was so much funnnn<3333 but I have to refilm the video Monday because I missed a few important points in the video. I am trying to get the video posted this week or next week for you girliesss<3333 I’ve been outside this past week I tried a few new restaurants and food and loved everythinggg.

How to Start a Business from Scratch in 2025 – A Step-by-Step Guide for New Founders
Thinking about launching your own business but don’t know where to begin? You’re not alone. In 2025, starting a business from scratch is more accessible—and more competitive—than ever before. Here’s how to do it right.
🚀 Introduction: Why 2025 Is the Perfect Year to Start a Business
The rules of entrepreneurship are changing fast. Thanks to AI tools, digital platforms, and remote work, building a business from scratch has never been more possible—or more exciting.
But with opportunity comes complexity. The startup world in 2025 is competitive, fast-paced, and constantly evolving. If you’ve got an idea and the ambition to bring it to life, this guide will walk you through how to start a business from scratch—step by step.
Whether you’re launching a tech startup, a local service, or a creative venture, this practical roadmap will help you move from dream to launch with clarity and confidence. Importance of Startups for India’s Economy
Startups play a pivotal role in shaping India’s economy by creating jobs, fostering innovation, and contributing significantly to GDP growth. As of 2022, startups accounted for about 2.64% of employment in the Indian market, highlighting their importance. The government of India has recognized this potential and launched various initiatives, such as the Startup India scheme, to support startup growth through funding, mentorship, and favorable policies. This ecosystem has propelled India into the ranks of top global leaders in innovation and entrepreneurship.
Step 1: Validate Your Business Idea
Don’t build before you validate.
Many new entrepreneurs fall in love with their idea before checking if people actually need it. In 2025, with customer attention at a premium, market validation is non-negotiable.
Here’s how to validate:
Talk to potential customers (online or offline).
Use tools like Google Trends, Reddit, and Quora to check demand.
Launch a quick landing page with tools like Carrd or Webflow and collect signups.
Offer a pre-sale or pilot to gauge interest.
If no one bites, pivot or refine.
Step 2: Do Market Research
Understand your customers, competitors, and trends.
Before spending time or money, study the landscape. What’s trending in your industry? Who else is offering similar products or services?
Use:
Google & YouTube for trend spotting.
SEMrush or Ubersuggest for keyword and competitor analysis.
Statista, CB Insights, or even Instagram/TikTok for emerging consumer behavior.
Find your edge. Your unique value proposition (UVP) is what will separate you from the noise in 2025.
Step 3: Write a Simple Business Plan
This isn’t corporate homework—it’s your action blueprint.
In 2025, your business plan doesn’t have to be 40 pages long. Keep it lean, focused, and useful. Include:
What you’re selling
Who it’s for
How you’ll reach customers
Cost to build/operate
Revenue model (how you’ll make money)
Short-term and long-term goals
Tools like Notion, LivePlan, or Canva Business Plan templates can help make it painless.
Step 4: Choose a Business Name & Register It
Your brand starts with a name.
Make it:
Easy to remember
Easy to spell

Available online (domain + social handles)
Use tools like Namechk, GoDaddy, or NameMesh to check availability. Once chosen, register it in your country or state. In India, use the MCA (Ministry of Corporate Affairs) portal. In the US, check with your Secretary of State’s website.
Don’t forget to buy the domain and secure the social media handles.
Step 5: Handle Legal & Financial Basics
Yes, it’s boring—but skipping it can cost you.
Choose a business structure (sole proprietorship, LLP, private limited, etc.)
Apply for licenses or permits based on your industry.
Open a business bank account.
Set up accounting tools like Zoho Books, QuickBooks, or even Excel if you're bootstrapping.
Separate personal and business finances from day one.
If unsure, talk to a startup consultant or accountant. Step 6 : Choose the Right Business Structure
In 2025, many new founders prefer flexible setups that protect their personal assets and allow easy growth. You can choose from:
Sole Proprietorship (easy, but less protection)
LLP/LLC (more legal protection, preferred for small businesses)
Private Limited Company (ideal for startups looking to raise funds)
Each country has its own rules, so check your local regulations or consult a business advisor.
Step 7 : Build Your Online Presence
If you’re not online, you’re invisible.
In 2025, your digital presence is as important as your product. Get started with:
A clean, responsive website (WordPress, Wix, or Webflow)
Active social media profiles (LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, depending on your audience)
A basic Google Business Profile if you’re local
Email marketing tools like Mailchimp or Beehiiv
Build credibility through consistency, not perfection.
Step 8: Create a Minimum Viable Product (MVP)
Start simple, launch fast.
Whether it’s a physical product, digital service, or mobile app, launch with the minimum set of features needed to test real demand.
Your MVP might be:
A no-code app built with Glide or Bubble
A service offered through DMs and GPay
A prototype product made by hand
Speed is your friend. Launch. Learn. Improve.
Step 9: Start Marketing Early
If you build it, they won’t come—unless you market it.
Use cost-effective methods to start:
Organic social media content
Blogging and SEO (try ChatGPT to draft posts!)
Influencer partnerships or product seeding
Referral programs or giveaways
Cold outreach (emails, DMs, calls)
In 2025, community is currency—build yours early and nurture it.
Step 10: Explore Funding Options (If Needed)
If your startup requires capital, explore:
Bootstrapping (your own savings)
Friends & family
Crowdfunding (Kickstarter, Ketto, etc.)
Angel investors or venture capital
Startup accelerators or incubators
Pro tip: Even if you’re not raising money yet, create a pitch deck. It clarifies your vision and makes you look investor-ready.

Conclusion: 2025 Is the Best Time to Build. So Start.
Starting a business from scratch isn’t about waiting for the “perfect” moment. It’s about taking the first small step, validating, building smart, and learning fast.
In 2025, you don’t need a million-dollar idea. You need clarity, a problem to solve, and the grit to keep going.
