Valicer Multiamory Month, Day Twenty-Eight: Magic (Valicer In The Dark AU)

The end of Multiamory March (as made by @polyamships) creeps ever closer, and today's prompt is a simple but fun one: "magic!" I have a number of AUs where magical things happen, so filling this one? Not a problem. :p Now, one might have expected that I'd do something for the All The Fairy Tales AU for this one, or perhaps the Medieval Fantasy AU, or maybe even the Valicer Forgotten Vows AU --

But when it came time to figure out something for this prompt, the first thing that actually came to mind was my beloved Valicer In The Dark AU. Which does indeed have magic in it -- just, uh, magic you don't want to mess with too much. Which led to me thinking about what the trio would have learned about magic, growing up in Duskwall -- and what Alice and Smiler might think about Victor getting into it once he embraces being a Whisper. And so the story below was born! I hope you enjoy. :)

Magic was dangerous.

That was a fact of life one learned early on, living in Duskwall. Magic, and anything related to it, was dangerous. The old tongue of sorcery was the domain of demons now, who used it to torment all who opposed them – from freezing them in storms of ice, to drowning them in massive waves, to burning them with whips of fire. And rituals? Well, you never knew what mysterious, otherworldly force would consent to lend you a bit of its power – or for what purpose. The city was full of stories featuring those who had dabbled in what they didn’t understand, and ended up paying a terrible price. Who had discovered that the power they so eagerly sought was also their inevitable downfall. Magic was dangerous, and thus best avoided.

Alice and Smiler had known that too – they’d grown up hearing all the stories, all the warnings, after all. And for the most part, they’d followed said warnings – Alice had confined her interest in the fantastical to her imagination, where magic could run wild without hurting anyone, while Smiler had channeled their desire to accomplish incredible things into alchemy, which often ran up against the side of magic, but never quite crossed over. Even after Alice suffered the death of her family and ten years in Rutledge Asylum, and Smiler finally ran away from home and was cheerfully swallowed up by the Advocates, neither of them were tempted much by the mystical.

And then they met Victor. Who – after some initial reluctance – wholeheartedly embraced life as a Whisper. Who poured through ancient volumes of spellcraft and sorcery, studying distressingly complex diagrams and practicing words no human tongue should be able to form. Who asked his ghostly mentor what rituals he knew, and how best to perform them. Who eventually came up with his own spells, designed to translate any language or ward them against spectral attacks or even drag them all temporarily into the ghost field. All the sort of terrifying, dangerous activities that any sensible person would want to avoid.

But – well. One could accuse Alice and Smiler of being a lot of things, but “sensible” was not usually one of them. And things Victor did – first, they were genuinely incredible feats of arcane power. Second, he always tried to be as safe as possible, and only use them for the whole crew’s benefit. And third – whenever he spoke a word that brought lightning arcing down from the sky, or drew a symbol that lit up a ghostly map of the city, Alice and Smiler would see the joy on his face –

And think, how could they deny the man they loved such pleasure?

A lucid dream, probably. You’ve heard of those before — the kind of dream where you know you’re dreaming and can control what happens. It kinda makes sense. This place, this feeling… it’s too surreal to be anything else.

With no real plan, you start walking. Or at least, you think you’re walking. Your legs move, but there’s no floor beneath you. No resistance. No sound of footsteps. Just the strange sensation of motion without movement, like walking through a screensaver. You walk for what could be minutes, or maybe centuries. In this black void, time has no shape. It slips through your fingers like water.

Eventually — though you couldn’t say why — you stop.

Nothing around you has changed. Still the same endless black. But something inside you shifts. A kind of internal nudge. Like a voice whispering, Here. This is the place.

And then, without warning, a sudden, blinding light bursts into existence. You immediately flinch, shielding your eyes with both arms. After so long in total darkness, the light feels almost too violent for your eyes. Your heart lurches. You half-expect to be sucked into some vortex or wake up back in your bed, maybe with a killer headache.

But instead, you hear something.

Not with your ears, but with your mind.

A voice, vast and impossible, echoing from somewhere deep inside your skull, so calm yet a bit commanding;

You crack one eye open cautiously.

The light is gone — just as quickly as it appeared. In its place is a glowing, semi-transparent screen hovering a few inches in front of your face. It’s rectangular, pulsing faintly white, like some sort of high-tech hologram ripped straight out of a science fiction movie.

“…This dream is getting weirder by the second,” you mutter under your breath.

On the screen are some numbers — large, bold, and golden digits running from 1 to 10, clean and crisp against the glowing surface.

The voice repeats, loud and unmistakable;

HOW STRONG DO YOU WANT TO BE?

This time, the screen gently expands, as if encouraging you to answer. You tilt your head, squinting slightly.

“Do I… have to pick one?” you ask aloud, although no one is around to answer.

You stare at the golden numbers a moment, trying to figure out what it all means or what this dream is aiming for. You’re not sure why you have to answer, or what these choices will change, but… well, it’s happening. So you play along.

“Well… why not?”

Without hesitation, you tap the number 10.

No idea what it will do, or if it even matters. The whole thing feels like one of those manhwa plots you love — where the hero wakes up in a whole new world and gets to choose their stats. But this? This is just a dream, right?

No way this is real.

The screen fades briefly, then returns with a new question, just as loud and just as clear inside your head ;

HOW RICH DO YOU WANT TO BE?

The voice returns, echoing deep inside your mind like a strange command. The translucent screen flickers back to life, once again displaying the familiar row of golden numbers, 1 through 10. You let out a breathy laugh.

“How rich do I want to be?” you repeat aloud, a crooked smile tugging at the corner of your mouth. “Easy.”

You don’t even pause this time.

“Ten. Duh,” you say with a grin. “Go big or wake up.”

Without hesitation again, you tap the number 10.

Just like before, the display refreshes with a quiet shimmer, like the soft ring of crystal glasses clinking together. It feels oddly satisfying, like hitting the perfect combo in a video game.

HOW RESPECTED DO YOU WANT TO BE?

You blink, expression tightening.

“…Okay, what kind of vague-ass question is that?”

You drag a hand through your hair, frowning at the screen. This one’s trickier than the last. Respect is complicated. Are we talking about fear-respect? Admiration? Public respect? Private? At school? In life?

The screen offers no clues.

You stare at the numbers for a while, brow furrowed. You bite your lip, then shrug it off with a sigh.

“Whatever. This is just a dumb dream anyway,” you mutter, pressing 8. It feels like a safe bet — enough respect to matter, but not so much that it’d make life complicated.

Besides, you don’t want to be too respected. That just sounds like pressure.

HOW INTELLIGENT DO YOU WANT TO BE?

You let out a dry laugh the second the next question pops up.

“Oh finally, something I actually need.”

You don’t hesitate this time — not even for a second. Your finger immediately taps 10, as if it were the most obvious choice in the world.

“Let’s see what being smart feels like for once,” you say with a smirk. “Maybe I’ll actually pass math without cheating. That’d be a nice change.”

You imagine your parents’ faces, proud and beaming for once over something other than sports trophies. You wonder what it would be like to walk into a classroom and know you’re the smartest one there. No pressure. No flukes. Just confidence. That sounds… kind of amazing.

“Too bad it’s all fake,” you add with a sigh. “I’d kill for this in real life.”

HOW INDISPENSABLE DO YOU WANT TO BE?

You exhale a long, weary sigh.

“How many more of these questions am I supposed to answer?” you mutter, frustration creeping into your voice.

This whole thing is starting to feel like some endless, annoying exam. And you hate tests — whether in school or in a dream. You’re already bored out of your mind.

You glance again at the question;

How indispensable do I want to be…?

The weight of the question surprises you. It’s not so straightforward this time.

Being indispensable — being the person everyone needs — sounds tempting, sure. People paying attention, relying on you, wanting you around. But on the other hand, being too indispensable could become a real headache. Expectations piling up, pressure mounting, people clinging to you like a lifeline. That kind of weight might just crush you.

But not being indispensable at all? That’s a worse fate, maybe. Invisible, forgettable, easily replaced.

You tap your chin thoughtfully, chewing over the idea. You like the attention — enough to feel seen — but not so much that you become a prisoner to everyone else’s needs.

“Alright, alright,” you grumble, voice half amused. “Option ten is probably way too much, and anything below five isn’t enough. So…”

With a quick flick of your finger, you choose 7.

“Yeah, that sounds about right.”

You shrug. It’s just a dream, after all. What’s the worst that could happen?

ARE YOU SURE OF YOUR CHOICES?

Two new words now glow on the screen; YES and NO, both shimmering gold like the rest.

You groan, rolling your eyes so hard it almost hurts.

“God, it’s like being in a video game with too many dialogue trees,” you mumble. “Yeah, yeah. I’m sure. Let’s get this over with.”

You slam your finger on YES without giving it another thought.

The moment you do, the screen begins to dissolve — not like turning off, but more like burning away into ash, scattered by an invisible wind. And suddenly, the black space is back. Completely cold, empty and painfully quiet.

You cross your arms.

“That’s it? All that setup for some cosmic BuzzFeed quiz?” you mutter, scowling into the void. “What a fucking shitty dre—”

You don’t get to finish.

Out of nowhere, a white-hot spike of pain tears through your skull — brutal and blinding, radiating from your temple like fire laced with electricity.

“—GHHk—!”

Your knees buckle. You crash to the ground, hands flying to your head as the agony intensifies. It feels like your brain is swelling inside your skull, like it’s trying to burst out.

No sound escapes your lips, even as your mouth opens in a silent scream. Your vision starts to splinter. Your limbs go numb. Your body shakes violently as wave after wave of unbearable pain crushes down on you. The void itself seems to warp and twist with the force of it — reality folding in on itself.

What the hell is happening?!

Just as suddenly as it started, your strength gives out. Your arms slump to your sides. Your vision fades into static. Your thoughts unravel, scattered like paper in a storm.

And then, for the second time that day, you collapse.

Falling backward, swallowed once again by the dark.

🪲Beetlejuice as Mephistopheles😈

so you guys might've seen that my masquerade comic has BJ wearing this funny little get up after people were expecting me to draw him wearing the Phantom's Red Death costume.

just who is Mephistopheles?

our devilishly charismatic fiend friend Mephisto is the reason we use the term "Faustian bargain" to refer to a deal with the devil. in the legend, Faust was an alchemist who ended up selling his soul to Mephistopheles in order to gain knowledge, power and pleasure. he is, quite literally, a trickster demon full of wit and a taste for irony looking to get something out of you. sound familiar?

of course, deals with the devil didn't originate with Faust, and neither did the trope of the devil being a charming and witty character. Faust just popularized it and greatly influenced later characters following this trope. Hades from Hercules is a pretty solid example, since he takes after Satan more than he does the actual Hades from greek mythology (which is on purpose, since the movie plays with christian elements for comedic effect, like the muses singing gospel and Hercules being like a combination of Jesus Christ Superstar and Superman.)

every now and then i see people complain that Lydia referring to Beetlejuice as a "trickster demon" in BJBJ messes with the lore, because "he's supposed to be a ghost," but he has always been more demon than ghost if you ask me. "trickster demon" is a perfect descriptor for him: he has a specific summoning ritual, powers beyond what normal ghosts can do, and is always always trying to tempt people into chaos and tricking them into making a deal. i'll give you knowledge, but your soul is mine. i'll save your loved ones, but you'll have to marry me.

despite this Beetlejuice and Mephistopheles are both funny characters, hardly menacing. doing fun little magic tricks and mocking wordplay, even though they can (and will) ruin your life. yet at the same time, they're not quite as evil as they might appear at first. it's always funny noting how Beetlejuice in the movies technically stuck to his word the entire time. surprisingly high level of integrity for someone like him, but that's part of why he's so great imo.

the scene in the original movie where Beetlejuice shows up as a circus attraction to get rid of the yuppies that came to Winter River to gentrify the town into a tourist trap is just the kind of thing Mephistopheles would do. same with how he gets rid of Rory in BJBJ, playing the role of the therapist to someone who used psychobabble to manipulate Lydia. ironic twists mocking human sins, that's what Beetlejuice is all about when he's punishing somebody, and it can all be traced back to Mephistopheles.

Mephistopheles is a proto-Beetlejuice, basically. or Beetlejuice is a modern Mephistopheles, however you want to look at it.

ok but why am i talking about this? well first of all, adhd. also this is one of my favorite character archetypes. i've always wanted to put my oc Rocky in a story where he's a Mephisto-type of figure. i used to think that the closest i got to that was when i crossovered him with Beetlejuice (you had to be there) but writing this post i...just remembered something. (feel free to skip the next paragraph, it has nothing to do with Beetlejuice lol)

i have this unfinished short story i started to write a while back, in mid 2018. i was miserable, going through a really bad depressive episode, and i was looking for something that could inspire me to create again and get back on my feet. just to practice and for shits and giggles i started writing a simple freeform story where a character named [redacted], who was a stand-in for myself, is suffering from writers block despite not being a writer, and basically wants to be good at writing. while muttering something about how he'd even "make a deal with the devil to become a good writer," he accidentally ends up summoning "the devil" (it's just Rocky) who's all silly and charismatic and offering him a deal. what i wrote ends there, i never finished it. but very soon after that, i rediscovered The Simpsons and started writing Those Springfield Kids. fast forward to a few years later, my SpringKids versions of the characters end up becoming part of an official couch gag animated by The Simpsons team. so. i guess...the deal worked? spooky lol (my Faustian downsides are 1. i can never finish anything i start and 2. i'm stuck here in Venezuela.)

anyway! i originally wrote this as a thread on twitter so i could introduce people to Mephistopheles since i was going to make a reference in the masquerade comic with BJ's costume. i just added a little bit more stuff (and the personal anecdote above) in this post. i would've posted this much earlier but on the day i was going to do it, my blog got nuked. now that i got it back, i can post this!

Pile one

This is my pile of witches and warlocks. The best way you manifest is through spells, and rituals. You have magic in your blooddddd hunnyy.  You might be highly mythical, intuitive, and just divine. Use this divine nature in a creative way, and all you desire shall manifest… this could be through glamour magic, love spells, abundance spells..

Pile two

These are my divine feminines. This pile best manifests by setting intentions and going with the flow. Working with the feminine via moon rituals, water element or just that shakti power will draw all you desire to you… there is a huge theme of co-creation and just feminine energy. This pile might need to release what doesn’t work emotionally and truly tap into their feminine wisdom when it comes to manifesting… what works for you, might not work for everyone else and that is okay… you might be alone in this power…

Pile three

This pile best manifest by mastering the earth element. This pile might be able to use scripting to manifest or just using the natural element to manifest. Could use some earthy/elemental witchcraft….

 But what i am hearing most is having self compassion and really devoting yourself to what you are trying to manifest = fruition of the desire. This might look like manifesting one thing at a time, and while you are manifesting it, you sleep, breath, and dream it. You continuously tap into the desire, and deeply ground yourself into the feeling consistently. Though remember balance, and leave a bit of space for life and your mental health. The whole saying, let it go and detachment for manifesting, DOES NOT apply to you. Your attachment to it really creates it…. This might be my obsessive manifestors… do you guys have any strong pluto in your charts btw???

Pile four

So there’s a lot of overdoing in this pile, and anxiety. There might be a lot of freezing and overthinking when it comes to choosing and sticking to what you are attempting to create. Rest assured it’s okay to feel how you feel at this moment. Rest assured that things will and can get better. Spirit is saying just remember to be ambitious, flexible but also grounded. Listen to where your intuition is guiding you. Manifesting isn’t supposed to add MORE problems to life. Like life can be difficult enough… stop taking it so seriously tbh. Like yes you can create change, but you create change in little and big practical ways everyday. From the moment you choose to brush your teeth, to the moment you decide on studying. Didn’t get much of a method for this pile! You might need to give manifesting a break and come back to it…

Pile five 

This pile might manifest best through chaos, and destruction. You seem to create great things from dark places. Where people see destruction, you see a moment to create. You might be really good at seeing people’s potential, and helping them shift into that.. How you can effectively use this power for yourself to manifest, I think is by doing shadow work, emotionally releasing rituals, and working with darker goddesses/gods. 

For example, let’s say you wanted to manifest a home, maybe journal about blockages you might have.. Do you feel undeserving? Do you feel its unattainable? Or maybe there is a childhood wound? Once you understand your depth, choose a ritual to release it, and then maybe channel those same feelings into getting what u want or set your desired intentions after you have released what doesn’t serve you?

Also,  I don’t know how to properly describe but channeling anger, fear and etc might work really well for you… being put through trials and tribulations might also work well for you… hopefully y’all get what im trying to put down <3

This pile gives me the vibe of the type of people that go through the most horrible break up and 6 months later, they look good asf and they make 5x times what they used to make…

Pile six

this is a very Venusian pile. This pile manifests best through instruments, dance, and music. Also having a communion with god as well… speaking to god, letting god/goddess know what you want.. Keeping that relationship with spirit will really help you..

Also, gratitude practices might really help you manifest your desired things. and, general affirmations might really work for you. Everything is as it should be. Everything is working out. I feel great.. those type of affirmations!
