Tips to Create Compelling Videos for a Microlearning Lesson
Tumblr media
In the age of digital learning, creating compelling videos for microlearning lessons is an essential skill for educators, trainers, and content creators. Microlearning, which involves delivering educational content in small, focused segments, is particularly well-suited to video format. Videos can enhance engagement, improve retention, and provide a versatile medium for conveying information. Here are some detailed tips to help you create impactful microlearning videos.
1. Understand Your Audience
Before you begin creating a video, it's crucial to understand who your audience is. Consider their age, educational background, professional experience, and learning preferences. Tailoring your content to meet the specific needs and preferences of your audience will make your videos more engaging and effective. For instance, younger audiences might prefer fast-paced, visually dynamic content, while professionals might appreciate a more structured and information-dense approach.
2. Define Clear Learning Objectives
Every microlearning video should have a clear and concise learning objective. What do you want your audience to learn or achieve by the end of the video? Defining this objective will help you stay focused and ensure that your content is relevant and purposeful. Clear objectives also help learners understand the value of the lesson and what they can expect to gain.
3. Keep It Short and Focused
Microlearning is all about brevity and focus. Aim to keep your videos between 2 to 5 minutes in length. This duration is long enough to cover a specific topic or concept thoroughly, yet short enough to maintain the learner's attention. Break down complex subjects into smaller, digestible chunks to fit the microlearning format. For example, if you're teaching a software tool, create separate videos for each feature rather than one long, comprehensive tutorial.
4. Engage with Storytelling
Storytelling is a powerful tool to make your videos more engaging and relatable. Begin with a scenario or problem that resonates with your audience, then guide them through the learning process as they solve the problem. This narrative approach helps to contextualize the information and makes it more memorable. For instance, a microlearning video on conflict resolution could start with a workplace dispute and demonstrate step-by-step how to address it effectively.
5. Use High-Quality Visuals and Audio
The quality of your visuals and audio can significantly impact the effectiveness of your video. Use high-resolution images and video clips, and ensure that your audio is clear and free from background noise. Invest in a good microphone and consider using background music sparingly to enhance the viewing experience without overwhelming the content. High production quality helps to establish credibility and keeps learners engaged.
6. Incorporate Interactive Elements
Interactive elements such as quizzes, polls, and clickable links can make your videos more engaging and help reinforce learning. These elements encourage active participation and provide immediate feedback, which can improve retention. For example, you could insert a quiz question midway through the video to test understanding before moving on to the next segment.
7. Leverage Animation and Graphics
Animations and graphics can simplify complex concepts and make your content more engaging. Use animations to illustrate processes, demonstrate ideas, or bring abstract concepts to life. Infographics and diagrams are also effective tools for visual learners, helping them to understand and remember information more easily. Tools like Powtoon, Vyond, and Adobe Spark can help you create professional-looking animations and graphics without extensive technical expertise.
8. Optimize for Mobile Devices
Many learners access microlearning content on their mobile devices, so it's essential to optimize your videos for mobile viewing. Use a responsive design that adjusts to different screen sizes, and ensure that text and graphics are large enough to be easily readable on smaller screens. Additionally, consider the length of your videos, as shorter content is more suitable for on-the-go learning.
9. Include Closed Captions and Transcripts
Adding closed captions and providing transcripts not only makes your videos accessible to a broader audience, including those with hearing impairments, but also improves comprehension for non-native speakers. Captions can also be beneficial in noisy environments where audio might be difficult to hear. Many video editing platforms offer automated captioning features, but it's important to review and correct any inaccuracies.
10. Promote Active Learning
Encourage learners to apply what they've learned by including prompts for reflection or action. For instance, after explaining a concept, you might ask viewers to pause the video and write down how they would apply the concept in their own context. This approach fosters active learning and helps to reinforce the material.
11. Test and Iterate
Before finalizing your video, test it with a sample audience to gather feedback. Pay attention to their comments on content clarity, engagement, and overall effectiveness. Use this feedback to make necessary adjustments. Iteration is key to improving the quality of your videos and ensuring they meet the needs of your audience.
12. Utilize Analytics
Many video hosting platforms provide analytics that can give you insights into how your videos are performing. Pay attention to metrics such as viewer retention, average watch time, and engagement rates. These insights can help you understand what is working well and where there might be opportunities for improvement.
13. Maintain Consistency
Consistency in style, tone, and branding helps to create a cohesive learning experience. Use the same fonts, colors, and visual styles across all your videos. A consistent tone of voice also helps to build a connection with your audience and establishes a recognizable brand identity.
14. Ensure Easy Access and Shareability
Make sure your videos are easy to access and share. Host them on platforms that are accessible to your audience and provide links or embed codes for easy sharing. Consider uploading your videos to multiple platforms, such as YouTube, Vimeo, or your own learning management system (LMS), to reach a wider audience.
15. Provide Additional Resources
Enhance the learning experience by offering additional resources such as downloadable guides, articles, or related videos. These resources can provide deeper insights and further reinforce the learning objectives. Including links to these resources in the video description or within the video itself can guide learners to explore the topic more thoroughly.
Conclusion
Creating compelling videos for microlearning lessons involves a blend of understanding your audience, setting clear objectives, and employing effective storytelling and visual techniques. By keeping videos short, engaging, and high-quality, incorporating interactive elements, and ensuring accessibility and consistency, you can enhance the learning experience and maximize the impact of your microlearning initiatives. As you continue to develop and refine your videos, leveraging feedback and analytics will help you to continually improve and adapt to the evolving needs of your learners.

seriously, though. i work in higher education, and part of my job is students sending me transcripts. you'd think the ones who have the least idea how to actually do that would be the older ones, and while sure, they definitely struggle with it, i see it most with the younger students. the teens to early 20s crowd.
very, astonishingly often, they don't know how to work with .pdf documents. i get garbage phone screenshots, sometimes inserted into an excel or word file for who knows what reason, but most often it's just a raw .jpg or other image file.
they definitely either don't know how to use a scanner, don't have access to one, or don't even know where they might go for that (staples and other office supply stores sometimes still have these services, but public libraries always have your back, kids.) so when they have a paper transcript and need to send me a copy electronically, it's just terrible photos at bad angles full of thumbs and text-obscuring shadows.
mind bogglingly frequently, i get cell phone photos of computer screens. they don't know how to take a screenshot on a computer. they don't know the function of the Print Screen button on the keyboard. they don't know how to right click a web page, hit "print", and choose "save as PDF" to produce a full and unbroken capture of the entirety of a webpage.
sometimes they'll just copy the text of a transcript and paste it right into the message of an email. that's if they figure out the difference between the body text portion of the email and the subject line, because quite frankly they often don't.
these are people who in most cases have done at least some college work already, but they have absolutely no clue how to utilize the attachment function in an email, and for some reason they don't consider they could google very quickly for instructions or even videos.
i am not taking a shit on gen z/gen alpha here, i'm really not.
what i am is aghast that they've been so massively failed on so many levels. the education system assumed they were "native" to technology and needed to be taught nothing. their parents assumed the same, or assumed the schools would teach them, or don't know how themselves and are too intimidated to figure it out and teach their kids these skills at home.
they spend hours a day on instagram and tiktok and youtube and etc, so they surely know (this is ridiculous to assume!!!) how to draft a formal email and format the text and what part goes where and what all those damn little symbols means, right? SURELY they're already familiar with every file type under the sun and know how to make use of whatever's salient in a pinch, right???
THEY MUST CERTAINLY know, innately, as one knows how to inhale, how to type in business formatting and formal communication style, how to present themselves in a way that gets them taken seriously by formal institutions, how to appear and be competent in basic/standard digital skills. SURELY. Of course. RIGHT!!!!
it's MADDENING, it's insane, and it's frustrating from the receiving end, but even more frustrating knowing they're stumbling blind out there in the digital spaces of grown-up matters, being dismissed, being considered less intelligent, being talked down to, because every adult and system responsible for them just
ASSUMED they should "just know" or "just figure out" these important things no one ever bothered to teach them, or half the time even introduce the concepts of before asking them to do it, on the spot, with high educational or professional stakes.
kids shouldn't have to supplement their own education like this and get sneered and scoffed at if they don't.

The Benefits of Video Transcription for Medical Professionals
Video transcription is a growing trend in the medical field. Doctors, nurses, and other professionals are turning to video transcription services to help them record their notes and make them more accessible.
Video transcription can help medical professionals increase efficiency, improve patient outcomes, and reduce costs.
Tumblr media
1. Increase Efficiency
Video transcription for medical doctors are handy when searching for specific information in patient records or research papers. It allows them to quickly find what they need without reading through everything word-for-word or manually transcribing notes from a meeting or interview. In addition, it can save time and money because it eliminates the need for multiple people, or even an entire team, to work together on an important project that may require multiple people to complete it.
2. Improve Patient Outcomes
Video transcripts are also helpful for patients who do not understand what their doctors say during appointments. They can review the information later at their own pace and in their own words. In addition, it helps ensure that patients don't miss important details about their treatment plan or medications, which could result in a poor outcome if they don't take their medication correctly or follow through on all of their doctor's recommendations.
3. Convenience
Finally, video transcriptions are also helpful because they make it easier for insurance companies to pay claims faster than they would if they only had written documentation from doctors' visits.
Moreover, video transcription for medical professionals is a great way to keep up with the fast pace of the medical industry. With advances in technology and communication, healthcare professionals can now treat patients globally with ease, convenience, and accessibility.
Contact Preferred Transcriptions if you are interested in working with a reliable, accurate transcription services company. Preferred Transcriptions has years of experience working with medical professionals to ensure their needs are met, helping them save time to focus on their patients.

Transcription of Jensen's full answer from That Part of his and Misha's panel
[Misha laughs, Jensen goes to speak but looks down shaking his head and grinning]
Jensen: “God… [Crowd laughs] Uh, professionally, [Crowd laughs again][...]”
Misha: “And you put that in air quotes.”
Jensen: “[Laughs] Use that term loosely. Uhm, there- there is- uh- there’s- there’s few people that, when the cameras are rolling, you get to um… truly create, moments that aren't on the page. Uhm, and it’s- it’s hard sometimes to find rhythm, and cohesiveness with everyone you work with. Uhh, and when you find the- the rare person that um, can- can, uh, play at a level that… makes you wanna be better, and also it almost is like a- it’s like a high that you get, when the creative juices are flowing and you're- you’re making moments that maybe didn't even plan to be there. ‘Happy accidents’ we used to call them. Of- Of emotion, or, uh- between-the-lines, uh- nuance moments.
And I think there’s a reason that the story of- of Dean and Cas skewed to where it was, was because, uh, I kept- kept being able to have that creative, um, ignition with Mish when- when those cameras were rolling that was uhh- that made me a better actor, uhm, and- and made me wanna be- wanna find that even more. And… and it’s- it’s a testament to not just his, uh, his talent but his- the way he preps, the way he plays, the way he- he uh, entertains, and performs. Um, there’s- there’s just such a uh, there’s such an openness. I say that um, that as- as an actor, you know people have asked me ‘I wanna be an actor, do you have any, uh, advice?’ I say ‘Know your stuff, but be emotionally available to any and everything when the cameras are rolling.’ And that is when you find the magic. And… the magic was always there when Misha would walk on set and those cameras would roll. So I think professionally that was one of the great assets that he brought on a daily basis, that I- that I got to be the beneficiary of.
In fact all- everybody, anybody that got to work with him, if they were available to it, and they noticed what he was doing was- was, you know, so nuanced, um, that it made them better. Um, so I really appreciate that gift of getting to work with him. Uh, the scene where he tells Dean goodbye, uhm, I- I- I blanked in that- in that scene. Because I became an audience member. I just simply was watching this unbelievable performance unfold and I had the best seat in the house. And then it was like my turn to speak and I was like ‘Oh, shit, uhm.’ I said ’Don’t ruin this for him, don’t ruin this for him.’ Uh, so when you get to work with somebody that has that level of talent and that level of expertise and- and- and knows how to- how to utilize performance the way he does, it just- um- it’s just really a gift.
Uhh personally, uh- the- he- he disgusts me. Um. [Crowd laughs] He’s just so dry that the oil never worked. [Crowd and Misha laughs] Buckets, of buckets of oil, it just… No, he- uh- I will say this, he’s- um- he- he’s such a man of- of many talents outside of just the acting field, uh, that it- it does truly disgust me sometimes. When he- in our meet and greet he’s like ‘What kind of hobbies do you have?’ and he’s like ‘Oh, I like to go into the woods and make furniture.’ I’m like ‘No!’ [crowd laughs] No! I see on- He’s like ‘What’d you do this weekend?’ ‘Oh, I went and like forged metal things with my kid-’ No! [Misha and crowd laugh]
Um… he’s such an amazing dad, he’s such an amazing friend, um… and… and uh, I mean this is very self-serving, but uh, it’s- um- he’s- he’s on the extreme short list of people that I would, that I would call, if I had a problem.”
[Misha gets up to hug Jensen, and Jensen immediately retreats to the other side of the stage. Misha hugs him, whispers something in his ear, and Jensen grins and hugs him back. They walk back to their seats]
Jensen: “[whispered into mic] He told me he loved me!”
What in the fuck was in the water this weekend

Martyn raids Ren after revealing he’d accidentally not replied to him and Ren is Dramatic about it.
I cut out a lot of dead air (read: all of the moments of Ren waiting for his sounds to end) to trim this down, and the transcription is under the cut:
Martyn: We should go um, raid, uhm...actually, my boy Ren-Diggity-Dawg's on. Let's go raid Ren. Ren-Diggity-Dawg. Actually I got a message the other day from Ren that I still need to reply to, I just, I saw it before I went live...today, and I was like, ''oop, don't know how that one slipped past me." Is it RenDogTV? It is, right, sweet! Uh, right, enjoy Ren's stream--
Ren: Welcome to all the Marteens, that have arrived in the chat. Martyn, bro. You and--listen. You and me need to have words, Martyn. (three seconds of silence) You know what, cut the music. Cut the music, this is-this is getting serious business now. Zoom in a little bit for dramatic effect. (five seconds of silence)
Tumblr media
Ren: Martyn. Bro. (two seconds of silence) I-Why you do me dirty, bro? Eh? What's up? Why you do me dirty like this, bro? (deep inhale) Dear viewers, let me tell you a story. A few days ago. Approximately--you know what, give me one moment, Imma figure out exactly how many days ago. I'm gonna rub the salt in this wound. Mm-mm-mm.
Tumblr media
Ren: We're gonna-we're gonna cook this one. Let's see, the twentieth. That's four days ago. Approximately four days ago, I sent a message to Mister Marteen. An important message. A message from the heart. What do I get in return, from Mister Marteen? Crickets. Crickets.
Ren: Give me one second, I need to find a cricket noise. I-I'm not as professional as Martyn, you see. Martyn's got instant access to sound effects because he's a professional. And uh, broadcasting genius. I am uh, you know. A little bit more amateur. Give me one second, guys, I gotta log into Epidemic Sound and everything. It's gonna take a while. Can't remember my password. (keyboard clicking, deep inhale, laughs) Okay, here we go. (keyboard clicking)
Tumblr media
(soft cricket noises that sound almost like a fire alarm in the distance play for ten seconds, uninterrupted. In the actual video, this sound plays for twenty-one seconds)
Ren: This is quite a long sample guys, it's two minutes long. Sorry about that. (cricket noises for thirteen seconds. In the actual stream this clip was thirty-five seconds long, and he turned the sound of the crickets up to be louder)
Ren: It's only halfway, guys, you still-still got a while to go. (cricket noises for twelve seconds. In the actual stream this clip was twenty-three seconds long. He then pauses the crickets for four seconds, zooms in on his cubito)
Ren: Pause for dramatic effect. (he starts the crickets again for thirty-five seconds [the full time here and in-stream] before pausing it again)
Ren: That is all I have to say about this matter. Thanks for the raid, Martyn. W-welcome everybody. You joined us right at the start of a trial chamber run. (four seconds of silence, then a fond laugh) And as an update, t-to Marteen-gate. I have received a reply! Hold on, I gotta find another sound effect real quick, one second. One second guys, uh, (keyboard clicking, then the sound of scattered applause and indistinct voices for thirteen seconds)
Ren: I have received a reply from Marteen! (the clip is still going, just indistinct voices) This-this sample is not working for me. (a clip of a motorcycle revving begins to play instead) (flustered laughing) That's n-that sample is not working for me either. Wait, I've got a sample on the stream deck! (applause begins, including happy yelling) I received a reply! (the sample continues to play) (Ren singing) Joy to the world / Marteen has replied! / He has finally / Replied! (deeper voice) After four days. (laughter, normal voice) Thank you for the reply, Marteen. I am very excited. We shall, uh, continue our correspondence, digitally. Upon another platform (laughing under his breath)
Ren: --X-Fandom is here with a gifted sub to Marteen! Ya weren't even subbed?! (silence for four seconds, then decisive keyboard clicking. Then the sound of a cat yowling, which is swiftly replaced by a baby crying for seven seconds, uninterrupted. In the actual stream it is twenty seconds long.) It's quite a long sample, too. Sorry guys. (In the actual clip, the baby continues crying for ten seconds uninterrupted, before Ren laughs over the baby crying, and then pauses it, while this video has only one second pause between baby crying and Ren's laughter) Oh, goodness gracious, I'm having too much fun.

Game of Thrones stars and other actors read South Africa's case file charging Israel with genocide at the International Court of Justice.
Transcript:
It was already known that repeated exposure to conflict and violence, including witnessing and experiencing housing demolition, combined with Israel'siege of Gaza since 2007, is associated with high levels of psychological distress amongst Palestinians.
Indeed, the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2712 expressed its deep concern that the disruption of access to education has a dramatic impact on children and that conflict has a lifelong effect on their physical and mental health.
This disruption and its dramatic impact on children must be considered in particular and in the context of the number of Palestinian students and educators who have been killed, 4,037 and 209 respectively, and wounded, estimated at 7,259 and the number of Palestinian schools having been damaged or destroyed 352 or 74% of the schools in the whole of Gaza.
Medical professionals assess that the health effects on all Palestinian children, women, men, older people, people with disabilities and people marginalized identities are immense.
An emergency coordinator for Médecins Sans Frontières interviewed on her return from five weeks in Gaza, describes: It's even worse in reality than it looks. The amount of suffering is just something incomparable. It's really unbearable. I'm speechless when I try and think of the future of these children. Generations of children who will be handicapped, who will be traumatized.
The very children in our mental health program are telling us that they would rather die than continue living in Gaza now.
The extreme levels of bombardment and lack of any safe areas are also causing severe mental trauma in the Palestinian population in Gaza.
Even before the latest onslaught, Palestinians in Gaza suffered severe trauma from prior attacks. 80% of Palestinian children experienced higher levels of emotional distress, demonstrating bed wetting, 79% and reactive mutism, 59% and engaging in self harm, 59% and suicidal thoughts, 55%.
Eleven weeks of relentless bombardment, displacement and loss will necessarily have led to a further increase in those figures, particularly for the estimated tens of thousands of Palestinian children who have lost at least one parent and those who are the sole surviving members of their families.
For the families who remain intact or partially intact, quote, “It's about doing everything you can so your child doesn't realize that you've lost control.”
There are reports of Israeli forces using white phosphorus in densely populated areas in Gaza.
As the World Health Organization describes, even small amounts of white phosphorus can cause deep and severe burns, penetrating even through bone and capable of reigniting after initial treatment.
There are no functioning hospitals in the north of Gaza in particular, such that injured persons are reduced to waiting to die, unable to seek surgery or medical treatment beyond first aid, dying slow, agonizing deaths from their injuries or from resultant infections.
Large numbers of Palestinian civilians, including children, have reportedly been arrested, blindfolded, forced to undress and remain outside in cold weather before being forced onto trucks and taken to unknown locations.
Medics and first responders in particular have been repeatedly detained by Israeli forces, with many being detained in communicado at unknown locations.
Videos published by Israeli media on Christmas Day appeared to show hundreds of Palestinians rounded up inside al-Yarmouk football stadium in Gaza City, including children, older people and persons with disabilities, being forced to strip to their underwear in degrading conditions. United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian affairs, or UN OCHA, reports video footage showing bruises and burns on the bodies of detainees.
Images of mutilated and burned corpses, alongside videos of armed attacks by Israeli soldiers are reportedly circulated in Israel via a Telegram channel called, 72 Virgins Uncensored, billed as exclusive content from the Gaza Strip.

Here's a very clear youtube video of Misha praising Jensen and Jensen praising Misha at SPNSF.
youtube
I've already reblogged transcripts of Jensen's comments, so I'm focusing on Misha's in this post, but give the full video a watch because both of them are being lovely and very open and eloquent. A couple of observations--Misha's personality and humor style means he leads with jokes. (He does this to himself all the time. Misha is the king of self-deprecating jokes).
Jensen leads with the same kind of gentle trolling of Misha. They've been like this for years. They tease and troll each other. The love is clear.
I didn't need to see this speech from Misha to know how he feels about Jensen, I've noticed it for years and it's not the first time Misha has shown his support or praised Jensen. It's also shown in self-evident ways. But this was a very clear, in depth, eloquent statement.
Unfortunately, given some fandom issues, it's become more and more necessary for them both to say it more loudly and clearly. Or maybe they just want to. But it's hard not to wonder, given some of the hate, that they are aware and are pushing back as lovingly and tactfully as they can. (People who continue to ignore realities are digging their own trench. Best of luck to them).
Here's a transcript of Misha's comments, courtesy of @cynifer:
“Jensen professionally as an actor is able to turn in a passable performance consistently. I’ll spare you all me telling you that Jensen is an excellent actor [Jensen interrupts by saying “It’s okay, they can hear it” and Misha says “they don’t want to hear it” and continues on] That he’ll probably wind up an a-list movie star at some point. I’ve told him that in private and I don’t want to make that a public statement because I saw even privately how big it made his head and I don’t think that’s good for him.
But I will share something that is a little more insider baseball about Jensen, this is he took control of the set and established a tone of professionalism and courtesy and kindness to one another on the set that is very rare in our business. For some reason typically when people are given keys to power in Hollywood on set, they turn into self-serving prima donnas and Jensen consistently set a tone of being respectful and professional and inclusive and made guest stars as well as crew members feel welcome and relevant and heard and there’s a reason the president of our network every year would host a dinner in Vancouver and would bring the cast of Supernatural to the dinner and then bring casts of other new shows to the dinner as well and basically told the new casts ‘be like these guys.’
I was late to the party, the new kid on the show when I got there that tone had already been established and Jensen you for sure carried the torch of that tone. Professionally That probably for me is the thing that I will carry forward in my career the most, having learned from you. And personally literally no one I know gives a better hot oil massage.”
