Allow me to make a few comments and ask a few questions in this context:

My first question that immediately came to mind:

Where was your open letter when research for the purpose of warfare started and weapon systems based on AI were developed, leading to unpredictable and uncontrollable conflicts?

AI-based threats have already been used in wars for some time, e.g. in the Ukraine war and Turkey. Speaking of the US, they are upgrading their MQ-9 combat drones with AI and have already used them to kill in Syria, Afghanistan and Iraq.

The victims of these attacks - don't they count as humanity threatened by AI?

I am confused! Please explain to me, when did the (general) welfare of humanity exist, which is now threatened and needs to be protected by you? I mean the good of humanity - outside your "super rich white old nerds Silicon Valley" filter bubble? And I have one more question:

Where was your open letter when Facebook's algorithms led to the spread of hate speech and misinformation about the genocide of Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar?

Didn't the right to human welfare also apply to this population group? Why do you continue to remain silent on the inaction and non-transparent algorithms of Meta and Mr Zuckerberg? Why do you continue to allow hatred and agitation in the social media, which (at least initially) belonged to you without exception?

My further doubt relates to your person and your biography itself, dear Mr Musk.

You, known as a wealthy man with Asperger's syndrome and a penchant for interplanetary affairs, have commendably repeatedly expressed concern about the potentially destructive effects of AI robots in the past. I thank you for trying to save me from such a future. It really is a horrible idea!

And yet, Mr Musk, you yourself were not considered one of the great AI developers of Silicon Valley for a long time.

Your commitment to the field of artificial intelligence was initially rather poor. Your Tesla Autopilot is a remarkable AI software, but it was developed for a rather niche market.

I assume that you, Mr Musk, wanted to change that when you bought 73.5 million of Twitter's shares for almost $2.9 billion in April?

After all, to be able to play along with the AI development of the giants, you lacked one thing above all: access to a broad-based AI that is not limited to specific applications, as well as a comprehensive data set.

The way to access such a dataset was to own a large social network that collects information about the consumption patterns, leisure activities and communication patterns of its users, including their social interactions and political preferences.

Such collections about the behaviour of the rest of humanity are popular in your circles, aren't they?

By buying Twitter stock, you can give your undoubtedly fine AI professionals access to a valuable treasure trove of data and establish yourself as one of Silicon Valley's leading AI players.

Congratulations on your stock purchase and I hope my data is in good hands with you.

Speaking of your professionals, I'm interested to know why your employees have to work so hard when you are so concerned about the well-being of people?

I'm also surprised that after the pandemic your staff were no longer allowed to work in their home offices. Is working at home also detrimental to the well-being of humanity?

In the meantime, you have taken the Twitter platform off the stock market.

It was never about money for you, right? No, you're not like that. I believe you!

But maybe it was about data? These are often referred to as the "oil of our time". The data of a social network is like the ticket to be one of the most important AI developers in the AI market of the future.

At this point, I would like to thank you for releasing parts of Twitter's code for algorithmic timeline control as open source. Thanks to this transparency, I now also know that the Twitter algorithm has a preference for your Elon Musk posts. What an enrichment of my knowledge horizon!

And now, barely a year later, this is happening: OpenAi, a hitherto comparatively small company in which you have only been active as a donor and advisor since your exit in 2018, not only has enormous sources of money, but also the AI gamechanger par excellence - Chat GPT. And virtually overnight becomes one of the most important players in the race for the digital future. It was rumoured that your exit at the time was with the intention that they would take over the business? Is that true at all?

After all I have said, I am sure you understand why I have these questions for you, don't you?

I would like to know what a successful future looks like in your opinion? I'm afraid I'm not one of those people who can afford a $100,000 ticket to join you in colonising Mars. I will probably stay on Earth.

So far I have heard little, actually nothing, about your investments in climate projects and the preservation of the Earth.

That is why I ask you, as an advocate of all humanity, to work for the preservation of the Earth - with all the means at your disposal, that would certainly help.

If you don't want to do that, I would very much appreciate it if you would simply stop worrying about us, the rest of humanity. Perhaps we can manage to protect the world from marauding robots and a powerful artificial intelligence without you, your ambitions and your friends?

I have always been interested in people. That's why I studied social sciences and why today I ask people what they long for. Maybe I'm naive, but I think it's a good idea to ask the people themselves what they want before advocating for them.

Ahead of the US elections, Elon Musk, the billionaire owner of X, has used the platform as his own personal political bullhorn.

On July 26, Musk posted a video of vice president and Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris in which a deepfake of her voice appears to make her say that she is the “ultimate DEI hire” and a “deep-state puppet.” The post now bears a community note indicating that it is a parody. But many alleged that, shared without appropriate context, the video could have violated X’s policies on synthetic, or AI-altered, media.

This was the culmination of Musk’s recent political rhetoric. Over the past month, Musk, after officially endorsing former president Donald Trump, has also boosted baseless conspiracies of a “coup” following Biden’s withdrawal from the presidential race, and insinuated that the Trump assassination attempt might have been the result of an intentional failure on the part of the Secret Service. After endorsing Trump, Musk announced that he was starting a pro-Trump political action committee (PAC), and initially committed to donate $45 million a month, before backtracking.

Former Twitter trust and safety employees say that Musk’s increasingly partisan behavior around the US elections and other major events is a sign that he is doing exactly what he accused the company’s former leadership of doing: playing politics.

“It’s staggering hypocrisy,” says one former Twitter employee. “Musk is smart enough to know social media is media, and it’s a way to control the narrative.”

Three former employees, who spoke to WIRED on condition of anonymity due to fear of retaliation, expressed concern that Musk presents a new kind of actor—someone who seeks to actively use a platform to reshape politics in both the US and abroad, and is willing to endure regulatory fines and declining advertising revenue to do so.

“He is consolidating power and has systematically dismantled all markers of credibility at the company,” the former employee says. “However, I think it takes on additional significance when the person he is targeting is a presidential candidate.”

Authorities appear to agree. Earlier this week, secretaries of state from Minnesota, Washington, Pennsylvania, Michigan, and New Mexico sent a letter to X demanding changes to Grok, the platform’s generative AI search tool, after it returned false information claiming Harris had missed the deadline to be on the presidential ballot in nine states.

Musk and X did not respond to a request for comment.

Musk has been ramping up to this moment for years. When he purchased Twitter in 2022, he promised free-speech absolutism. After taking over, Musk immediately fired the majority of the company’s policy and trust and safety staff, who were responsible for keeping hateful and misinformative content off the platform. This included those responsible for guiding the platform through contentious elections. As the former employees noted, there is now no one at the company to deal with a flood of election-related misinformation, let alone what Musk himself might spread.

“There’s almost no one left,” the former employee says.

Disinformation and hate speech on X have ballooned on the site, and a recent Pew Research study found that X has taken on a partisan tilt. Since Musk’s takeover, it’s become more popular with Republican users and less popular with Democrats, who are less likely than Republicans to say their views are welcomed at the site.

The actual composition of the site’s user base has changed, with people who had been kicked off the platform for violating Twitter’s community standards being let back on under Musk. Trump himself was famously unbanned, but a wide array of avowed white supremacists, conspiracists, and neo-Nazis also flooded back onto the platform, including far-right pundit Nick Fuentes, QAnon proponent Liz Crokin, conspiracy theorist Alex Jones, and election denier Mike Lindell.

The platform’s new blue check system, which allows anyone willing to purchase a subscription to get a marker that previously confirmed they were who they claimed to be next to their name, has also contributed to the growing misinformation problem. While the system used to be free and reserved for verified public figures, politicians, and journalists, anonymous accounts like @Sprinter99800 and @ShadowofEzra are now able to use the algorithmic boost offered by the subscription model to spread misinformation about the wars in Gaza and Ukraine, respectively. Blue check accounts are, further, incentivized to spread outrageous claims because they can be paid based on how much engagement their posts get.

“He has a very obvious political agenda,” says one former member of Twitter’s policy team. Looking back at the last few years, they referred to Musk’s release of what he dubbed the “Twitter Files,” a cache of internal documents. The documents, according to Musk, revealed the political biases of the platform’s previous leaders—according to others, they showed mundane interactions with researchers and government employees—but also led to the doxing and harassment of former trust and safety employees and misinformation researchers.

Musk has also used the platform to put his thumb on the scale of politics outside the United States.

Last year, after Brazil’s far-right president Jair Bolsonaro lost his bid for reelection, his supporters stormed the country’s legislature, in an echo of January 6, 2021. In April, Musk defied an order from Brazil’s Superior Electoral Court to remove the accounts of far-right actors who, the court said, violated the country’s laws by undermining confidence in the country’s electoral processes. X then released the court’s confidential orders to the Congressional Subcommittee on the Weaponization of the Federal Government, which then made them public. Experts and government officials at the time said the move was a deliberate attempt by a foreign billionaire to undermine the country’s democratic institutions.

While Musk has repeatedly asserted that he took over Twitter to preserve its commitment to free speech, the company has complied with censorship from right-leaning governments. Last year, the company complied with an order from Turkey’s authoritarian government to censor content ahead of the country’s elections and blocked a BBC documentary about India’s right-wing Hindu nationalist prime minister Narendra Modi.

Instances like this, the first former employee tells WIRED, show that Musk is an entirely different actor than other tech CEOs, unbothered by the kinds of laws or norms that could be used to reign in another company. Musk doesn’t appear to be cowed by penalties like fines for spreading misinformation that are meant to keep billionaires and companies in check to protect the public interest.

“Regulation is not written for overtly malicious actors,” says the first former employee. “We don't have good regulation anywhere in the world that thinks about corporate entities like that … and it’s certainly not how we are used to treating a man who owns multiple companies.”

Because Musk’s own politics and priorities appear so clear, even decisions made seemingly without a political agenda can be interpreted as part of one. Last week, the X account for White Dudes for Harris was booted from the platform, causing many supporters of the vice president to wonder if this was Musk’s own political preferences playing out on X in real time. But a third former Twitter trust and safety employee who spoke with WIRED says it appears to be a pretty standard suspension that can happen when someone who has been banned from the platform in the past makes a new account. “Whoever set up the account most likely had an email address, IP address, or phone number that matched an account that had previously been banned on the platform. That would automatically be a penalty.”

The former employee says that the fact that people could not be sure if it was the result of Musk’s politics, or just a good old-fashioned moderation snafu is the real problem: “The fact that we have to ask those questions just shows the trust is gone. The misinformation has won.”

In an interview with the Atlantic, Musk said he would accept the results of the election should Harris win. But whether that will hold true in November is still cause for concern. Last week, after the Venezuelan elections wrapped in what experts said appeared to be a stolen victory for the country’s current president Nicolás Maduro, Musk railed against Maduro on X, even challenging him to a physical fight.

“What does it look like if this same sort of advocacy happens come November or December, in which he really believes that the election has been stolen or the vote counts aren't there?” the former employee says. It’s the same type of question that the former trust and safety teams were asking themselves about Trump during the 2020 presidential election. “It's very eerily kind of the same situation, except it’s the CEO and owner of the platform making those decisions, who also has the final say in content moderation decisions.”

you walked into a building, setting your bags down at the floor. you looked around, there were many types of TV’s. from different times, different brands, and different styles. you look for an employee, and you see an employee just… staring at you. he was the only person working there. you clear your throat, and he snaps back to reality and makes his way to you.

“i apologize… s-sorry…” he blushes from embarrassment. “is there anything i can do for you?”

“oh yes, actually. i’m here to purchase a TV.” you mumble. “for my shit parents.”

he hears you mumble the last sentence. “what are your parents doing to you?” he laughs jokingly. he pushes his black hair back. he had a streak of red in his hair, which went with the suit he was wearing.

“just…forcing me to get married. to a man i dont even love. and they slap me every time i say i won’t.”

“really? i mean… it’s 1991, why would you have to do that?” he sits on a nearby sofa, putting his elbows on his knees. you walked closer so he could hear you. in one smooth motion, he grabbed your hand and sat you down on the couch. “i’m Vox, by the way. and you are?”

the next morning, you woke up early. you saw Vox tighten his bow tie in the mirror. “how’d you sleep?” he asked.

“good, i guess.” it was the best sleep you’ve ever had. it was weird you slept with your new friend, but you were glad you could finally get some rest.

“what now..?” you ask. where do you go? you never want to go back to your parents house.

“do you need a job?” he asked.

“i suppose.” you wondered what he meant.

“we happen to be hiring. i am the manager.”

“you are?!”

“mhm. now, i have plenty of extra uniforms.”

“i don’t need to do an interview..?” usually you have to do one.

“i can trust you, right? come here, let me show you the uniform.”

he picked out an identical uniform and handed it to you. you went to a private area to change.

the clothes were big on you.

“hmm… let me see.” he reaches for a telephone and dials a number.”

“hello, velvette. i just need a little tip.”

he talks to velvette for a while. you hear velvette scream something through the phone.

“JUST TIE IT UP, ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE!”

he sighed and slammed the phone back. he got on his knees and bunched the shirt and tied it with a hair tie while you used a belt so your pants wouldn’t fall down.

“whos velvette?”

“just a fashion designer. designed these uniforms.” he points to the closet. he was the manager, so he wore a stylish suit. you looked beautiful in the clothes employees had to wear.

“dear, you look very…presentable.” he grinned and fixed his bow tie before exiting the room. you followed him out, and you got in the passenger seat.

he had a grin the whole ride. perhaps because you were with him. you had to admit, your heart would flutter when he called you ‘darling’ or ‘dear’, but you wouldn’t say that out loud. you also knew he would steal quick glances at you.

“ahh, here we are. welcome to your new job at VoxTech!” he tucked your hair behind your ears and welcomed you in.

first chapter done! i’m taking a break from my first story for this since i’m kinda obsessed with vox rn..

“We are doomed.”

It uttered without elaboration. Carqine, his most loyal of sea cucumbers, halted his cleaning duties to give the lumbering automaton a quizzical look from where he stood.

“Doomed? That’s hardly a notion you hear every day. Care to elaborate, commander?” the conductor prompted with a bite of sarcasm, extending his spindly arms to streak over the extended surface area of the newly-installed signages with a damp rag. Most of the old ones had faulty lighting and were generally outdated, so new ones were purchased and set within their respective stations to display the necessary information.

The air was stale around here, and there weren’t any patrons in sight. If there was, the commander wouldn’t be standing out here in the first place.

While the… shall we say seedier sectors of the metro didn’t see much traffic, the larger, more up-kept areas still saw great business. The incident with the NILS statue had done remarkably little to actually impede sales. It was almost humorous.

Tartar takes a lunging step forward, closing some of the height difference so he could address his valued employee more seriously.

His wires ripple in discontentment. “These… other Tartars I have observed. Many of them feel lonely, and remorseful. Many of them regret what they’ve done.” it explains coldly, rubbing its clacking fingers together.

Carqine turns his head to study the oozing, disgruntled visage of the robot. He gave a thoughtful hum.

“And why is that a problem? Does it make you doubt yourself and your own directive? Give you second thoughts?” he theorized, gesticulating a stretchy arm in its direction.

Denewiah is quick to shake his head, emitting a frustrated spout of hissing white steam from his card slot. “That’s hardly it. The problem is that these… Tartars, if you can even call them that at this rate, are SO quick to roll over and abandon their optimal trajectory for goal acquisition, and for why? Because some misbegotten Inkfish told them they were ‘doing a bad thing’? I mean, it’s just LAUGHABLE! It makes you think they were never serious about resurrecting humanity to begin with!” he raved with his hands thrown into the air.

The sea cucumber couldn’t exactly say he related to the commander’s frustrations, but he saw no harm in hearing him out either. He gives a short whistle as he sets down the spray bottle of glass cleaner.

“Do you think any of them are only pretending to be sorry? Y’know… playing the long con?” the small conductor offered up, his tone comparatively casual.

The AI vocalizes a frustrated sigh as he pinches the tiny metal knob between his eyes— the equivalent of someone pinching the bridge of their nose.

“I’d ordinarily be inclined to believe you Carqine, but I don’t even think most of these other bots have that level of processing power or free memory space to uphold a charade like that.” he rebuked. “I think they’re being entirely sincere.” it groaned in what might’ve been defeat.

Denewiah didn’t feel as though his main gripe had been properly emphasized, so he went on to explain, “If we look across the varying timelines, and the STEEP majority of Commander Tartars ABANDON their duty and begin to sympathize with the Inkfish… That surely spells doom for humanity and its return. These-… These messengers, hand-PICKED by the humans before them, should be doing EVERYTHING in their power to ensure that decision is honored! We’re DOOMED!” it exclaimed, taking another thundering step closer with its claws twitching and lashing with thinly suppressed anger.

The android’s employee couldn’t help but wince back into his shoulders a bit at the telephone’s outburst. There were few things that got it this passionately infuriated, and it was never pretty to witness.

“Well,” he gulps, smoothing out the lapel of his little suit, “I guess that means you’ll have to pick up the slack where they can’t.” he concluded.

Tartar freezes up as that epiphany hits him, and his wires are held firm in the air as his internals whir sharply. Eventually, the wires go slack after another hiss of steam, and he suddenly straightens himself back out to his full height.

“Yes…”

Its lenses gleam with a renewed determination as it adjusts the sleek brim of its prized cap.

“I suppose I will.”

Windows Recall Has Already Been Exploited

If its existence wasn't already bad enough, everything Recall stores is kept in an unencrypted SQL database.

Even if Microsoft pinkie promises that Recall data is only stored locally, that will not stop malware from slurping everything you have done, are doing, or will do, from your PC.

If you're thinking you can just turn it off when it arrives in your Windows updates and be fine, consider the fact that your personal information is likely going to be on someone else's PC at some point.

I have worked IT for a Fortune 500 retailer and can tell you; if you make any large purchase, be it a car, an instrument, windows or doors for a home, or have any sort of custom order made, that task is done through a Windows PC that will have your personal info and payment information on it at some point.

Financial and medical institutions will have more care about this, but I can guess with a high degree of certainty that nearly any PC in a retail environment is susceptible to malware from unsavvy employees, and even more susceptible to a simple physical attack. In a busy store, basically anyone could walk up and plug a USB drive with a malicious payload to a PC used for transactions. Cash registers/tills are generally safer, since they will be running a maximum-stability older version of Windows that will not have these kinds of updates.

I'd love to hope that businesses realize this and demand a version of windows with AI features disabled, but AI is such a buzzword in the current market that products are popping up all over the place that do not directly have anything to do with AI, but are slapped with the label anyway. Microsoft does not care if home users complain. They care if investors, large business accounts, and system integrators do. Those people are nothing if not techbro hype train riders, so good luck with that.

The takeaway here is to be extremely careful. And switch to Linux if it meets your needs.

Though to be honest, after seeing Nadia's asymmetrical face especially, I keep wondering if the 3D renderings are AI generated? It might explain why the renders all look pretty accurate from the same three quarter profile/angle of the sprites, but look less like the characters from other angles, especially when you compare them to CGs with their faces at different perspectives.

I've heard that the company has had AI generated images before in official things, so I guess it wouldn't be too surprising.

edited to add - a Dorian employee has reached out to me personally to tell me that they were in contact with the company Dorian hired to design and produce the figurines, as far as they know there wasn't any AI involved, and to please change what's on my post

The CEO of PocketPair has made posts on Twitter saying how impressed he is with AI art generation, that is true, but the post most people point at he credits in the same thread. It was made by a Buzzfeed employee that was using ruDall-E (minimaxir on twitter) he created a series of fakemon and the CEO commented how it could fool him.

The company of PocketPair is also pro-AI use, and they most certainly have made a game using AI art before, but it does not appear Palworld is one of them. I feel like explaining the game adds context and then you can come to your own conclusions as to if it's ethical use or not. AI: Art Imposter is a game based around AI art generation, each player is given a theme and must give the built-in image generator a prompt that matches that theme, however one of you is an imposter who does not know the theme and must feed the generator a prompt either vauge enough or by pure luck matches the theme and try not to get voted out. This game is similar to the popular game Suck Up! which involves the use of an AI text generator, to the point where the website makes it extremely clear you are purchasing cryptocurrency to make the game work. My only gripe is we do not know where the art is coming from, it could be from the public domain or their own office sure, or it could be stolen which is honestly more likely.

The CEO did state once in 2022 "In about 30 years, the general public’s perception of copyright may have changed considerably.” in reference to AI art generation. I think it's entirely possible due to his past statements AI was used in the design process, not the direct assets. This is again a subject of heavy debate and a matter of opinion regarding ethics, as to whether or not you consider inspiration from AI art to also be a form of stealing. If you've ever "stole" or "fixed" AI art adopts this process is more than likely what was done here. I think this is what he meant in regards to copyright, as the original question was if you feed the same image into a generator enough times is it then considered an original idea, I could be wrong however.

I get the game with my game pass subscription either way, but I understand the need to have this sort of information before making a purchase. I personally do not like the use of AI and tried to remain as neutral as I could by providing other similar examples even if I do not personally agree with them, but I'm sure my bias will shine somewhere. As an artist AI is definitely something I worry about but I can see how it can be used as a proper tool once more laws are put into place regarding proper credit and payment to the artists used.

phew! a late answer but it's finally here: I present to you AOI!

Name acrostic: Artificial Outperformer Inteligence

He is an oc (based on another personal oc) that I adapted for the DCA fandom. I had never shown it because I usually find it difficult to draw the "stilts" of its legs.

brief explanation: In this story we are placed before SB. AOI is a robot purchased by Fazco from another company that specializes in security (since their own advanced technology is more specialized in entertainment). It was not bought by their own decision, but they were forced by the constant complaints and requests of the workers who work with the animatronics. These workers, although they do not know the entire history of Fazber entertainment and others, do know how dangerous these intelligent animatronics can be and the damage they can cause if they fail, so they demanded as a security measure the purchase of a specialized robot. specifically not his own product.

AOI's main job is to keep workers safe during maintenance and repair hours, but it also has the purpose of keeping animatronics safe from employees who want to break them or infect them with a virus on purpose.

Some facts and data from AOI:

• In addition to protection, he is in charge of escorting the animatronics to P&S

• Sometimes he must recover staff-bots or small cleaning robots from spaces in which they get stuck.

• Their design is based on the appearance of a samurai, and as the name might indicate, the company that sells them is from the other side of the world.

• AOI has detention protocols for each animatronic (image below right). Basically he knows the weak points of each design and can use them if necessary.

• In addition to the AOI protocols, it has electrical conductors in both hands, which give a kind of electric shock that serves to paralyze both humans and animatronics.

• AOI's leg stilts are used to reach high places, run very fast, and maintain balance in confined or narrow spaces, such as ceiling joists.

• AOI is forbidden to be seen during Pizza Plex's opening hours, so he stays hidden. Some people have managed to see it for moments and there is a rumor of the existence of a "secret company animatronic".

• The workers at the Pizza plex love and treat AOI as a kind of mascot. AOI is able to hold logical conversations and is usually pleasant

• AOI, on the other hand, is not highly appreciated among animatronics (except for staff-bots and cleaning robots that have him as a hero). Most avoid it when they see it

• Having an equally advanced AI AOI was also interested in "being friends" with the glamrocks, but it seems that it is not possible

• Bonnie was the only one who was able to hold calm conversations with AOI.

•AOI also has a security protocol against intruders. In addition to using the electronic shock, he has the command to lock the invader in an office and give a report to the employees the next morning.

• AOI's jaw is locked, but he can sometimes open it and break the lock.

• The robe that AOI wears is a kind of haori, and he uses it to cover the logo of the company that created it (Fazco's policies).

• When one of the animatronics refuses to accompany him to maintenance, he has the mission to "hunt" them. He doesn't really like to do that, but he knows it's his job.

• His head works as a kind of light screen where his protocols and "false eyes" are reflected.

• AOI likes tattoos, but can't have them, so instead he gets small stickers to use as replacements.

• AOI is deeply interested in learning about the daycare and its attendants who rarely require maintenance...

Tbh I don't have a specific story for him, but I did have in mind a few scenes and interactions from AOI, the animatronics, Eclipse and the DCAs (here they are separated). I think at some point I even considered pairing him... but it never got very far.

Last year, the White House struck a landmark safety deal with AI developers that saw companies including Google and OpenAI promise to consider what could go wrong when they create software like that behind ChatGPT. Now a former domestic policy adviser to President Biden who helped forge that deal says that AI developers need to step up on another front: protecting their secret formulas from China.

“Because they are behind, they are going to want to take advantage of what we have,” said Susan Rice regarding China. She left the White House last year and spoke on Wednesday during a panel about AI and geopolitics at an event hosted by Stanford University’s Institute for Human-Centered AI. “Whether it’s through purchasing and modifying our best open source models, or stealing our best secrets. We really do need to look at this whole spectrum of how do we stay ahead, and I worry that on the security side, we are lagging.”

The concerns raised by Rice, who was formerly President Obama's national security adviser, are not hypothetical. In March the US Justice Department announced charges against a former Google software engineer for allegedly stealing trade secrets related to the company’s TPU AI chips and planning to use them in China.

Legal experts at the time warned it could be just one of many examples of China trying to unfairly compete in what’s been termed an AI arms race. Government officials and security researchers fear advanced AI systems could be abused to generate deepfakes for convincing disinformation campaigns, or even recipes for potent bioweapons.

There isn’t universal agreement among AI developers and researchers that their code and other components need protecting. Some don’t view today’s models as sophisticated enough to need locking down, and companies like Meta that are developing open source AI models release much of what government officials, such as Rice, would suggest holding tight. Rice acknowledged that stricter security measures could end up setting US companies back by cutting the pool of people working to improve their AI systems.

Interest in—and concern about—securing AI models appears to be picking up. Just last week, the US think tank RAND published a report identifying 38 ways secrets could leak out from AI projects, including bribes, break-ins, and exploitation of technical backdoors.

RAND’s recommendations included that companies should encourage staff to report suspicious behavior by colleagues and allow only a few employees access to the most sensitive material. Its focus was on securing so-called model weights, the values inside an artificial neural network that get tuned during training to imbue it with useful functionality, such as ChatGPT’s ability to respond to questions.

Under a sweeping executive order on AI signed by President Biden last October, the US National Telecommunications and Information Administration is expected to release a similar report this year analyzing the benefits and downsides to keeping weights under wraps. The order already requires companies that are developing advanced AI models to report to the US Commerce Department on the “physical and cybersecurity measures taken to protect those model weights.” And the US is considering export controls to restrict AI sales to China, Reuters reported last month.

Google, in public comments to the NTIA ahead of its report, said it expects “to see increased attempts to disrupt, degrade, deceive, and steal” models. But it added that its secrets are guarded by a “security, safety, and reliability organization consisting of engineers and researchers with world-class expertise” and that it was working on “a framework” that would involve an expert committee to help govern access to models and their weights.

Like Google, OpenAI said in comments to the NTIA that there was a need for both open and closed models, depending on the circumstances. OpenAI, which develops models such as GPT-4 and the services and apps that build on them, like ChatGPT, last week formed its own security committee on its board and this week published details on its blog about the security of the technology it uses to train models. The blog post expressed hope that the transparency would inspire other labs to adopt protective measures. It didn’t specify from whom the secrets needed protecting.

Speaking alongside Rice at Stanford, RAND CEO Jason Matheny echoed her concerns about security gaps. By using export controls to limit China’s access to powerful computer chips, the US has hampered Chinese developers’ ability to develop their own models, Matheny said. He claimed that has increased their need to steal AI software outright. By Matheny’s estimate, spending a few million dollars on a cyberattack that steals AI model weights, which might cost an American company hundreds of billions of dollars to create, is well worth it for China. “It’s really hard, and it’s really important, and we’re not investing enough nationally to get that right,” Matheny said.

China’s embassy in Washington, DC, did not immediately respond to WIRED’s request for comment on theft accusations, but in the past has described such claims as baseless smears by Western officials.

Google has said that it tipped off law enforcement about the incident that became the US case alleging theft of AI chip secrets for China. While the company has described maintaining strict safeguards to prevent the theft of its proprietary data, court papers show it took considerable time for Google to catch the defendant, Linwei Ding, a Chinese national who has pleaded not guilty to the federal charges.

The engineer, who also goes by Leon, was hired in 2019 to work on software for Google’s supercomputing data centers, according to prosecutors. Over about a year starting in 2022, he allegedly copied more than 500 files with confidential information over to his personal Google account. The scheme worked in part, court papers say, by the employee pasting information into Apple’s Notes app on his company laptop, converting the files to PDFs, and uploading them elsewhere, all the while evading Google’s technology meant to catch that sort of exfiltration.

While engaged in the alleged stealing, the US claims the employee was in touch with the CEO of an AI startup in China and had moved to start his own Chinese AI company. If convicted, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
