It's so weird I was thinking of Shadowgate so much last week.
Years ago I started writing (for myself) this crazy monsterfucker sex adventure basically set in castle Shadowgate. And I forgot about it but was thinking about it a lot this week for some reason, and then THIS guy does THIS thing and now I want to add him to the adventure. I'm not even sure I still have a copy of that old writing lmao

The 1989 NES version of Shadowgate is one of my favorite videogames of that era. It’s a point-and-click dungeon crawl, and is perfect in a lot of ways. For the most part, it lacks the skewed logic of many point-and-click games, though its approach to magic can be tricksy in a way I appreciate. The monsters are interesting, but there is no real combat, it’s all just puzzles in a different form, and they must all be solved if you have any chance of defeating the Warlock Lord and stopping the raising of Behemoth. And boy does the game oozes atmosphere. Thanks to the timer of your torches burning out and the genuinely unsettling soundtrack, the game feels like it has real stakes, real danger.
I knew the NES version was a port/rework of an earlier computer game developed initially for Mac, but it wasn’t until last summer I saw the cover for it. I don’t know why I assumed it would have the same somewhat silly looking gargoyle as the NES release. It didn’t. This cover is so much coooooler. Having fiddled with emulations of the original, I do think the NES version is better — though slightly higher res, the Mac version is black and white and lacks the soundtrack, which is a key component of the game’s success.
Couple funny things. Until I bought the computer version (this one is actually for Atari computers), I didn’t realized that Déjà Vu and Uninvited preceded Shadowgate (the NES ports started with Shadowgate, then Uninvited, then finally Déjà Vu). And I only just learned as I prepared to write this that when SSI closed up in 1994, it was acquired by Mindscape, which had published Shadowgate. There’s no meaningful connection between Shadowgate and the Gold Box games beyond that purchase, but it tingled the back of my brain in a funny way.

Beyond Shadowgate (2024)
While the ICOM MacVenture series may have begun on the Macintosh, it’s fair to say that most gamers experienced them through the NES ports. Shadowgate was the most popular of these, leading to a 2015 Remake and a 2021 VR spinoff. But 2024’s Beyond Shadowgate deepens the nostalgia, being a true sequel to the original NES game, done in the style of the original NES game. To create this game, Icom rightsholder Zojoi collaborated with indie team GrahfMetal Games, who created two point-and-click adventures based on the NES MacVentures, Spectacle and Infested.

My random game poll has four slightly spooky titles up for vote this time!
I have a decent number of horror-esque games, so I figured I'd put together a poll of some this time.

Weird Sexy "Monsters" in "Shadowgate"
So yeah, once I was writing fantasy sex stuff. One was about an adventure that kinda took place in Shadowgate or a shadowgate like gothic setting. I got real stupid with it, where your main character/protagonist/pov character is a direct descendant of an earth-mother-creator fertility goddess who basically created the universe by boinking all the other gods. Like ya do. Anyway the "plot" was the character was horny all the time due to the inherited creator-goddess internal drive to get sex and create new parts of the universe. And she keeps laying "World Egg" type things with new species hatching from them after every time she has a really good 'creative' session with a sex partner. So it kinda has that pokemon "gotta boink 'em all" feel because you want to get all the eggs and make all the new magic species that are needed to save the world. Plus she's gifted the castle and thinks she can escape the trap of her suffocating simple life by going to the castle but the castle is just another trap or cage for her. AAAANYYYYWAYYYYS here's some of the 'monsters' I had on the fuckable list from Shadowgate. First up, a pair of shark merfolk that were super hot but living in the subterranean cavern with a key-carrying Skeleta ghoul. Next, a sleek, intelligent fire-breathing black dragon. The type of dragon that we see in the Dragonlance books or the Slayers anime, where they can and do take human form occasionally because they're magic, but they always kinda have a bit of "Dragon" going on even when human. Valgarv, great example, great for that aggressive territorial "Stay away from my stuff I said don't TOUCH that" brat stuff.

And of course now I want the Ghost Ghouls and such lol LET'S GO

Sexy Shadow Wraith, check. Sexy monster near a sexy well in a moonlit courtyard, check. Sexy mysterious wizard, check. Other sexy dragons like the firedrake and wyvern.

Skeletal Wraith king, chained lady is actually a werewolf. Sneaky demons. Troll Bridge Hookers. Can pay the toll with cash grass or ass. Might toy with you some. Living statues. Handsome Sphinxes. Had a hot werewolf wizard guy based on Tom Hiddleston and his twin was also wizard trying to cure his lycanthropy. Vampires, gargoyles, skeletons... it just fits the new Ghost aesthetic so well.

Maybe they weren't attempting to reference Shadowgate at all but man I loved it.

It's a sad thing that your adventures have ended here!! This week on the Vintage RPG Podcast, we look at Shadowgate (1987, 1989), the point-and-click fantasy adventure videogame. Explore a mysterious castle while trying to find a way to stop the Warlock Lord from destroying the world! Tremble in fear as your torch burns low! Get eaten by every monster! Have a soundtrack-induced panic attack! All this and more awaits you in Castle Shadowgate.
