You’re so amazing and sweet and cool. Thank you for asking about Star, giving me the space to talk about them and the AU in general. I have a hard time talking about these things without being asked to speak on it first. My first instinct is usually to tell myself “no one cares” 😬

But anyway, enof self-flagellation 🙂‍↔️🙂‍↔️.

Uhh, well, I’ll start with some bits I’ve touched on before—they’re in their 20s, live in a small apartment above a cigar shop, drive a real clanky Jeep. They’re dressing mostly in very casual masc 90s fits. T-shirts, tanks, jeans, cargo pants, hoodies. Obviously converse lol. Drawn to gamer, skater, punk and grunge aesthetics. Always wears a choker.

Their favorite band is Sneaker Pimps. Main hobby is gaming on their (original) XBox���Halo, Star Wars Battlefront, Counter-Strike. Star also owns a GameCube, a Game Boy, and enjoys a smattering of single-player action and adventure RPGs.

They’ve developed quite a skill for gamer trash talk, or at least are pretty good at dealing it back to the real sorta trash found over XBox Live in the 2000s. This aptitude for banter comes in handy for dealing with Moon’s snark 😝. Once Star realized that Moon doesn’t actually hate them (rough first introduction), he’s just kind of a rat bastard, their friendship becomes a lot of casual teasing and wisecracking. And friendly (but still cutthroat) gaming competition.

Star’s dynamic with Sun is a little different. They’re still a bit impish if Sun’s tryna play manager with them, or they think he needs to chill out. But really they just enjoy being around him. He’s eccentric, expressive, makes them laugh, and they can see how intensely he cares for the arcade and the people around him. I think Sun comes to see Star as a cheery but chill, levelheaded presence. Despite the joke-cracking, they’re kinda a “straight-man” next to Smoon’s eccentricities.

I go back and forth about how much of a solid backstory I want to give Star because of this play of them being a y/n self-insert character, or at least starting out that way. Both in the sense that the character literally started off vaguer in personality and history earlier in the AU AND even now, in that they don’t have a great sense of their own identity at the start of the story.

This feeling of existential listlessness, not knowing what they actually want from life—it’s what drives them to move out of their parent’s place. Just make a decision for themself, regardless of the judgmental eyebrow raising at that decision, regardless of all the “An arcade?! What about your degree?”

I wanted to ask about your honest feelings regarding Grim and more then often obnoxious behaviour especially during events. This is coming from someone who loves cats and one of the things that got me into Twst was the fact that there was a talking cat in it (I still love the little shi* and look forward to his new outfits. I'm basically the meme " i still love them but sometimes i just want to get in a car and run them over".) For me it was annoying but a little cute like the first few times but now that we are done with 7 books of main story and a buckload of events his obnoxiousness is starting to feel really annoying. His character feels like it had no development at all. I know events are not canon nor take main story progress in to consideration but come on! Yuu's motivation to rescue Grim in book 6 didn't felt genuine either. Even now his antics in eternity float didn't come across adorable but exasperating instead. How do you feel about Grim?

Also, curiously if you ,as in you the author not your OC, were in yuu's shoes what would you do? How would you interact with grim? Do you think you can handle him realistically? I know you don't self insert yourself but just hypothetically speaking how would you feel about him?

Hihi ^^ Thank you for the well wishes! I think I've made a full recovery (or close to it?) at this point, but there's some lifestyle changes I made in the aftermath. Thankfully, it's nothing too bad!

Before I give my thoughts on Grim, I want to preface by disclosing my biases so you can understand where I'm coming from. While I definitely prefer cats to dogs, I've realized recently that I don't actually like cats?? I just tolerate them better than dogs. This is mostly on account of the fur, which I generally find very gross and messy. (One of my friends jokes this is because I'm just a Mammal Hater 💀) I do happen to be a pet owner and my (non-specific) pet very much has Grim's personality. They're loud, they're needy, they love to eat, they cause trouble, they act like they're the boss around here--so I'm sort of used to and desensitized to most of Grim's behaviors.

Now, about Grim! I generally like him (mostly because he basically acts like my own nonspecific pet and has cute ribbons). He's unfortunately always going to be my annoying little fur baby, but I totally understand why some people don't like Grim. His voice is admittedly kind of grating, and he always seems to be causing Yuu/the player grief. I disagree with those who dislike Grim for "stealing" screentime from Yuu; I think he's a suitable stand-in for them, since the game has to take measures to keep Yuu vague for self-insert purposes. Grim did nothing wrong, he is just serving his function. I also disagree with those who find it demeaning when Grim calls us "minion". To me, it doesn't feel any different than a friend ironically calling another friend "idiot" or something of the sort. Additionally, several other characters in the Twst cast have derogatory or arrogant nicknames for Yuu/the player or for their peers, but for some reason those have largely been adopted and interpreted as signs of affection by the fandom??? Which has always been super odd to me. I do see a point to be made about being annoyed at Grim for not taking responsibility for his actions (Yuu is often demanded to control him), but I’d say that’s intentional to move the plot along, clunky as it is. This doesn’t feel different to me than your pet, child, or sibling is being a nuisance and you having to get them under control in public. It’s also difficult for me to stay mad at Grim for this when other NRC students arguably act similar (causing trouble but not apologizing or taking accountability) + are ruder to Yuu but they get excused or adored for it while Grim catches flack. Why is there this bias? Is it because Grim isn’t a conventionally attractive anime boy?? 😭 Is it because we are forced to spend more time with Grim so he has more opportunities to be pointed out? I don’t get it.

That being said, that doesn't mean I think Grim is necessarily a well-written character, especially not for most of the main story. As much as I love book 6, the kidnapping + tearful reunion ring hollow if the player isn't already invested in Grim before then. The issue is that the prologue, plus books 1-5 do very little to show moments of Yuu and Grim genuinely bonding. Most interactions between the two involve Grim making trouble, his skipping responsibilities, or generally being cocky, and Yuu having to clean up after his messes. That doesn't endear him to us. We don't really get moments of Yuu and Grim seriously getting to know each other or points where we get to see his good traits. Book 6 would have worked a lot better if there had been moments dedicated to Yuu and Grim being more intimate beforehand. You don't have to make Grim a completely new character; work off of his existing traits and give him scenarios where he is allowed to shine and support Yuu.

Maybe in the prologue or book 1, Yuu is having trouble falling asleep because they're so anxious about being in a new world and Grim tries to act all tough to reassure them they're safe by his side, and this finally helps Yuu drift off. In book 2, maybe Leona's picking on Yuu a little too hard during their practice game and Grim feels he must stand up for his minion against a bully. For book 3, there could be a scene where Yuu scolds Grim for trying to take the easy way out and Grim confides in them about not wanting to flunk out because being a great mage is all he has ever wanted. Then when Yuu asks why this is his dream, Grim can't come up with an answer (which calls attention to Grim not really knowing much about himself or his past). As for book 4, expand more on Grim trying to break them out of Scarabia with a spoon. Play up Grim acting like he has to be the hero and do what he can to help his minion out of a tight spot! In book 5, have Grim help Yuu with coaching everyone or maybe getting a little jealous that there's so many people he has to share his living space with. Then Yuu can reassure him he's irreplaceable!! And sprinkle in more scenes where Yuu and Grim just connect over being outcasts, alone and unsure in this world but able to find solace in one another. By the time book 6 comes around, we'll have all these moments to look back fondly on and motivate us to rescue Grim, who cared so much for Yuu. Grim, whom we've developed a friendship with over the main story... Grim, who is now locked away in an unfamiliar face with no friends around...

For events, I'm willing to be a little more patient with him since 1) they're not canon to the main story and 2) Grim is obviously used just to shoehorn Yuu's presence into several events, especially the hometowns (through his whining about wanting to do something fun/to eat lots of tasty food). I can't recall a specific instance of Grim being super annoying in events... but I will say that I do find Grim annoying in Eternity Float. Grim seems a little overwritten here, if that makes sense??? He's acting more cartoonish and childish than usual... Like, Grim comedically chomps onto a large ham hanging from the ceiling with ZERO understanding that he needs to pay for it first?? And he wants a bigger slice of pizza (but Riddle tells him it's rude to reach across the table), so he tries spinning the plate instead, only for the pizza to go SPLAT on Malleus's face??? Then he hoses people down with a water gun... SORRY, did Grim mentally regress a few years???? OTL

Mmm... If I were in Yuu's shoes, I think I'd deal with Grim similarly with how I deal with my irl (non-specific) pet: sternly yet fairly? I'd try to train Grim, make sure he eats a balanced diet, gets exercise, and keeps stimulated, bathe him, take him out on walks, give him treats and toys if he's well-behaved, put him in the corner and have him think about what he did if he doesn't, always keep a first aid kit on hand... Oh, and I'd carry him everywhere either by the scruff or in a carrier bag. One hand on him at all times, or else he might wander off and cause trouble. I think it'd be hard dealing with his fire magic and rashness but 💦 I've been told I'm pretty patient, so I think I could handle it if I had to. Whether I'd LIKE it or not is another matter entirely. Grim is basically a little kid or a toddler, and I'm honestly not a fan of children. An animal being feisty is... fine, even cute. But the instant the animal starts giving me lip in complete sentences, it's a lot less charming. I still feel like Grim has the potential to grow on me over time though... There's a weird charm to his attitude, haha.

It’s interesting how in-jokes often turn into regular surrealist jokes to outsiders.

There’s this recurring character in the elder scrolls series named M’aiq the liar who says things that only really make perfect sense if you’re familiar with previous games in the series, previous versions of M’aiq, and fan discourse leading up to the game. And there are people like that. But most people playing the game don’t know he’s a meta developer insert character and don’t know everything he’s referring to.

I was one of these people until literally two days ago when I got confused by running into this seemingly useless weird cat man again and again and wondering what the hell he was doing there. I dove down the rabbit hole and now I understand. And I understand both sides of experiencing this character.

Take for example this quote he has in Skyrim:

"Werebears? Where? Bears? Men that are bears?"

This is a weird line out of context. Funny, I guess. What’s a werebear? I haven’t come across any of those yet. Later I’ll come across one as an enemy on Solstheim but I don’t know that yet. What is this cat talking about? Whatever.

But what this is referring to is twofold. In Oblivion, the previous game one of his random lines was:

"Werewolves? Where? Wolves? Men that are wolves? Many wolves. Everywhere. Many men. That is enough for M'aiq."

THIS was a reference to werewolves being cut from Oblivion. The player can’t be one and they don’t appear as enemies.

But the werebear line also refers to the fact that in previous games people claimed there were werebears in skyrim so a bunch of people hoped they could become a werebear in Skyrim the game. That was never made an option and werebears weren’t added as an enemy until the Solstheim DLC.

But to me who doesn’t care about discourse outside of the games just running into this cat asking random things about bears is just… what is this man? He’s dressed like a priest, he’s talking about bears, his name is “the liar”. Funny, I guess?

Inside jokes, author self inserts, 4th wall tapping. Your experiences of all these things depends on how who you are and what you know and who you know. As a writer studying this one example is weird to me. I’m dissecting M’aiq like a frog. And not in a fandom or blorbo kind of way. Like as a professional inspecting someone else’s technique.

Okay, so! Right off the bat, I’m gonna say that if you are going through suicidal ideation and want to harm yourself PLEASE reach out and get some help. Trust me, I’m well aware of the dark spot you are in if you’re contemplating self harm, it’s not fun. Please don’t let the evil voices telling you that nobody would care if you left, win. Life is hard, but it’s very rewarding too, and there is no way that you have not impacted at least one person who would miss you. If you feel like you’re going to self harm at all, please please please reach out to someone. This is all fun and games, but this is still a very serious topic and I am begging you to stay strong and not go through with anything.

That being said, I am very rusty with these two, so forgive me if they seem out of character or needlessly mean at any point, I tried to keep the tone a bit lighter here. I hope this is a wholesome read, and I hope that anyone who reads it who needs help will get it.

STANLEY SNYDER

Stan doesn’t come off like he’d care. He’s very blunt and matter-of-fact, and Xeno may have at some point traded Stanley’s emotional expression for the hard-working loyalty he has.

That being said, when it comes to self-harm, he’s pretty sweet about it. In his own way.

He wouldn’t outright acknowledge it, say anything, or really even ask about it. Stan doesn’t strike me as the type to outright speak about personal issues.

Instead, he’d simply glance at your wrists, make sure to feed you, give you water, let you vent to him if you decided to, and would basically sniff out when you’re in a dark place and pick you up for an outing or conversation so that you aren’t all alone and at risk of harm.

Stanley might also bit by bit hide dangerous items from you. Again, without any real comment, you could probably go weeks or months before you realize all of the small ways that Stan has done his best to help or keep you safe.

While he’s not a very emotionally chatty man, you can sure bet that if you’ve got nefarious plans, Stan will know. And he will intervene.

XENO HOUSTON WINGFIELD

Xeno is a lot like his best friend. He’s not the type to fret and worry over someone if they’re self-harming. He’d at most call you a dumbass for an attempt tbh.

Again, though, that’s not a sign that he doesn’t care. If you’re his friend, he cares about you a lot, he’s just an ass about it.

If Xeno found out you were self-harming, he’d randomly bring up the most painful, gruesome details about self-harm to dissuade you. Like the slow, painful way you’d die if you overdosed, how drug store ibuprofen is purposely made to not kill someone if they try, the pain that would come from cutting, or the challenge that is getting a noose to work right so you die instantly rather than slowly suffocating.

It’s a very morbid method of help, a very cold and cruel one, you could say, but I think it’s appropriate for a man who has very sparse ethics.

He would also find a way to resuscitate you if you did try. He would do that out of sheer spite because fuck you, you’re not escaping him that easily.

Xeno also might develop a bit of a dark sense of humor about it. Like asking if he could dissect you if you succeed, or saying he’d turn you into Frankenstein.

STANO

As a pair, these two would basically just help one another to help you.

Stan would take on a more emotionally caring role compared to Xeno, and Xeno would dissuade you and hide items from you.

Stan would still be the primary listener for the problems, he’d just report those problems back to Xeno too.

If it really is looking to be a very bad time, they’d effectively take turns talking to, distracting, and basically guarding you. They will hospitalize you if it’s necessary. Your opinion on the mental ward is of little importance.

Xeno would relish ripping apart anyone who may upset you or bully you. Verbally or literally.

In general, these two would just work together scarily well to lower your opportunities for self-harm. Granted, Xeno or both realize that a person dead set on something will find a way, but if you don’t have the alone time to get creative, you can’t do that.

I came across this post on x the other day and i just want to share or vent (?) I guess; my thoughts and my personal answer to this question. And this is no way in looking for pity etc, okay I'm just ranting / venting / whatever...

Side note : my main is Zayne❄️ and Caleb🍎

As much as how i customizes my MC to look like me, as much as i love to self insert myself into the story and the lore, the memories, the interactions, deep down i know if they really do existed in real life, and they personally knew me, i don't think they'll like me, even be romantically attracted to me. They're a prodigies academically and non academically and me, myself nothing really works out for me in this life, no matter how hard i tried. I don't know what i did wrong to be honest...I'm not quiet, I know how to socialize, i know what people suits my personality but again, i don't know what went wrong, i don't know what i did wrong...

In middle school people asked me to help them buy flowers for their crush, just bc i passed trough a flower shop everyday when coming to school, yet i received none, i didn't expect anyone just give out to me out of nowhere obviously but i don't think anyone has any interest in me romantically during that time.

In high-school i got myself a boyfriend but well, nothing turned out good as well, i got harr*sed and i almost died lmao (litterally, I'm not joking; i went under a surgery once bc of him) anyways, other than that i never got treated the same by my friend circle-" e.g when someone from our friend group is having their birthday, the other friends in the friend group will throw a mini birthday surprise for them, and I'm involved too ofc i tried to show, and when it comes to my birthday well...no, nothing in return, no gifts no bday parties nothing. And ofc i told myself that i shouldn't expected anything from anyone but that resulted in me distancing myself to everyone after high-school. I just knew that i wasn't supposed to be treated like that.

After covid and i was told i have dissociative amnesia due to trauma and high stress, i forgot 70% what happened in my school years, i forgot my classmate's names and faces, my teachers, and the experiences i have during it. It feels like i have a huge blank spot inside my head.

College years also very mundane to me, almost the same like high-school, everyone got celebrated for their birthdays except me, I'm used to it at this point...i don't even do bad when I'm still at school, a 3,7/4 GPA is all i have but other than that, nothing.

From those tiny experiences alone i feel like if the lads boys are real, specifically zayne and caleb. I'm pretty sure im just another forgettable face in their life, i don't think they'll ever notice me if i do know them irl...i wouldn't matter to them. They do deserves someone better, someone who's trully deserves them, someone smarter, witty, someone whose on their level, someone pretty, and so on...

Growing up, i tried to be kinder to myself, practices positive self talk and use this game as a motivation to do better for myself and as a reminder that I too, deserves love, deserves to be treated well, deserves to be someone's priority but yet here we are...back at 0 it's been years since i developed a real life crush on someone non fictional, maybe, just maybe I'm no longer have the capacity to be attracted to someone(?) At this point I'm just very detached when it comes to a person, i don't know if i'll be able to have a future with someone else, though i wish i do love me, i wish i do love myself the way i would love Zayne / Caleb.

One of the things I really love about Neku is how I feel he's written as person first and a playable character second.

This is obviously clear in the beginning, where a lot of his actions or thoughts will end up frustrating the player, or outright making them hate him. But I think it comes back at the end too, during the final duel, at the point where his development has made a lot of people forget the kind of person he was at the start.

There's a lot of cases where people don't understand why Neku lowers the gun, or complain about him doing it. I've actually seen instances of people either mad that he doesn't shoot, try to rationalise it by believing his final entry fee is the bullets in his gun (despite this contradicting the outcome of the scene), or at one point, in the comments of a YouTube video, claim that the scene should've had two choices, which allows the player to pick whether he pulls the trigger or not.

These kind of reactions fundamentally miss the fact that Neku is not the player. He is not a self-insert character. There are points in the game when he is conflicted, where you can choose between two things and he'll do either - but when he's truly set on something, there's nothing you can do to make him stray from that path. He won't abandon Sota. He won't join Megumi. And he won't shoot Joshua. You're not even given a choice in the last situation, because it was never about you.

Many other games would have the option to shoot, and moreover, would have the choice to lower the gun result in the Bad Ending. This is why people are fine with him aiding Sota or turning down Megumi - because those are the classically "heroic" options. Choosing one boy over a city of people - the same boy who just revealed he caused Neku's death - is not generically, universally relatable, or feel good, and the scene itself reflects this too. It's sombre, painful, accompanied by tears. It's Neku making a choice that he believes will result in Shibuya's destruction, a choice the average player absolutely would not make, and that's what causes the confusion or anger. It also really serves to reinforce how Neku understands Joshua in a way both people in Joshua's own life and people watching him through the screen don't.

Neku will connect with people you dislike. Neku will make choices you disapprove of. Neku won't shoot Joshua, ever. The game itself asks you to try and understand why he does this, like Neku himself tries to understand those around him, but some players just won't make that effort.

Neku is such a good character because you can relate to him, you can try to understand him, but he isn't and will never be you.

hello! i'd like to start this by apologizing in advance for my rambling and if i end up saying anything that could be offensive or insensitive

ik how that sounds, the truth is that i am a little bit scared of coming here bc of previous experiences i've had asking for advice on the internet when it comes to Blackness in my writing. at the time i was an overly excited kid who didn't know better and i have learned from my mistakes, but the fear of offending ppl has kept me from doing any more questioning and i am done w that! i am white. i was raised by white ppl. i've had very little interaction with Black ppl. i am ignorant, and i want to change that, and i don't want this anxiety to hold me back from learning, so here we go:

for context: i've been playing a lot of interactive fiction games, and the way that i find the most fun to play them is by having a premade cast of OCs for me to toss at Situations and see what happens. i find that to be a really interesting and different way of developing a character, with the downside of being limited by options that were predetermined by someone else. the two characters i play with the most ended up with confident, sometimes downright defiant personalities, and i wanted a character who was the opposite so i could explore each game more fully... well, that character is Black, and that's where i think i might have made a mistake

Cynder, the character in question, started out with the objective to be a more shy, meek, submissive character. i genuinely didn't realize this was a problem until 5 min ago when i scrolled through your blog a bit before opening the ask box. i want to keep their shyness, and maybe their meek attitude, but i do want to know how i could work with a character like that in order to make them better? they might have started as a premade for me to use in place of a self-insert, but much like my other characters who started out that way they're developing to become much more, and one day i want them to have a story of their own

Cynder has anxiety and wears their heart on their sleeve. they're very friendly, but very shy, and prone to crying when they feel very strong emotions. i think part of their character arc is definitely becoming more confident and coming out of their shell a bit more, but they're happy to not be the center of attention. the major issue is their lack of a backbone. ngl, i wanted a doormat character, and that's exactly what Cynder is. they want to do good and have a strong sense of morals, but their first instinct when panicked or faced w danger is either "freeze", "flee" or "fawn". they're extremely insecure and prone to manipulation, even when they know they're being used, because they lack the confidence to think they could do better. that's a trauma thing, and is definitely going to be worked on, bc otherwise what's the fun of it, but that doesn't change the fact that's p much their default state. they're smart, but not a genius, they're extremely observant, very tuned to people's emotions, prone to guilting themself for things they couldn't have helped with, and their biggest weakness is their lack of physical strenght, but they're extremely fast and very good at stealth. they love music and drawing, and are overall a sweetheart who wins people over by just being extremely genuine and kind in their friendliness

basically their character archetype is "shy baby who really needs to learn to love themself". how can i work with that with a Black character? do i just scrap the whole concept and go for something else?

another aspect of Cynder is the fact that they're usually religious. once again, this is bc my other characters always end up being atheists of some kind, and Cynder came in to fill that "hole" when playing games that involve a religious aspect, be it fantasy religion or irl religion. im not sure how much i'd like to explore that on my own, but it is a important enough aspect of theirs that i thought i should bring it up; this is gonna sound very vague, bc i genuinely dont have a specific religion in mind (im not christian, i know nothing abt christianity or any other religion that involves the bible, and honestly i'd much rather work w a made up religion than anything else if im gonna be writing abt this stuff) but do you have any pointers for writing religious Black characters? is there anything i should avoid or be aware of, any harmful stereotypes and the like?

another issue with Cynder is their design. they have dark brown skin with warm undertones, black coily/kinky hair kept in stylized cornrows, and hazel/amber eyes. im worried abt their eyes. they're meant to be downright golden, a light brown that looks gold when hit by sunlight, that is when their eyes aren't just straight up yellow in a more fantasy setting. i know the problems with giving Black characters features such as light eyes, and i wanted to know if that'd be a problem w a character like a Cynder, who has such a different eye color?

There's nothing wrong with your story description so far. Why would meekness be inherently bad for a Black character to have? I will say, if this is one that you'd feel better leaving as your self insert, then you don't have to make them Black- it's okay to have your own self insert character! I'd far rather you do that, than project onto Blackness and... Not get it.

Nothing you've described would anything that is somehow inherently different because that character is Black, so much as it is the perspective that they, you, and the audience will have on them will change because they are Black. So them being a "shy baby learning to love themselves" is not something that we wouldn't experience! We'd have a lot more to face about it, even!

I'm gonna be honest, I know you said you scrolled for a bit, but I would highly suggest going through all of my lessons and all the links contained within to help broaden your education of this topic. Your confidence will increase with more knowledge. Because it feels like you are insecure about your lack of awareness of Black people, and rather than just asking for me- or anyone else on the Internet- to validate your fears and give you the answer, which runs the risk of them being not nice (because yeah, I'll admit, it doesn't sound great when you start with that) it would take more work but benefit you far more in the long run to do the reading. 👍🏾

I'm a little shy about it, but I've been getting into fun self-insert stuff lately. Fallout 4 is truly a dating sim game...

The character in this comic is supposed to be fairly reflective of real-life me, but there's sort of an alternate-universe catch to them; They're like a time capsule of the me in October, 2024. So, there's certain bits of wisdom and knowledge, of which I that have now, that they don't. Essentially, they're prone to making blunders, and still have personal developments to make. I've been having lotsa fun exploring this concept!

The premise of my writing/story is that in another universe, on October 23, 2024, they wake up in Sanctuary Hills, October 23, 2287. This version of me is from our world, so they are heavily under-prepared for surviving the wasteland, and their only advantage is the fact that they have decent knowledge about the Fallout world (due to their fixation on it). They have to navigate this much more brutal environment, coupled with their personal vices and difficulties, including but not limited to the horror of being mysteriously ripped out of their own world. Their social-psychological struggles inadvertently leads to them deciding that lying about their origins was the best course of action. This alternate me initially white-lies about being a psychic, until it spirals out of control and they end up having to break the truth to everyone they've lied to. Nate is also released from Vault 111, and this alternate me has the honors of spoiling the Institute's grand looming scheme, after a bit of convincing.

The specific context behind this scene/snippet depicted in the comic, is that this alternate me hired MacCready, to not only have an experienced wastelander backing them up, but to also, hopefully begin assisting him with his struggles. They let it be known that they have (an unspecified amount of) knowledge about his life, but they still lied to him about where they were coming from, just how much they knew--and--their plans to help him. This me was also strongly in denial about their fascination and affection for him, so they were actively fighting a crush the whole time. They were hoping to help him and get on with their life elsewhere, and hopefully with someone else.

This alternate me planned to clear out the warehouses and to collect scrap for land development, with MacCready's help. They end up explaining a bit about their Minuteman-aligned land development goals, and unintentionally let on that they knew about MacCready's tragedy. When MacCready realizes this, there comes an awkward tension, because he is left blind-sided trying to process everything, and this me is extremely worried he took the information poorly, and may refuse their offer to help. This alternate me feels the need to be avoidant with him, and decides to get the job over with, the sooner the better.

However, since this alternate me was distracted with being evasive to their hired help, they had gotten careless, resulting in a heavily bleeding wound.

For further context, and before I continue, MacCready already sort of felt like he could resign his social-emotional walls to this alternate me. This was due to the fact that they already knew quite a bit about him, but didn't do anything to betray/exploit him. This alternate me also invited him to ask for whatever information he wanted back from them, to keep things fair and square. So, as a result, over the day he'd gotten to know them, he already felt some sense of kinship with them.

This leads back to this scene. MacCready simply offers to check and wrap up the wound (thus the vodka, rag, and bandages). This alternate me is already confused as to why he's being so friendly already, and they have some conversation, but it inadvertently leads back to the awkward tension they were feeling earlier; this alternate me comes clean about how much they actually knew about his life, and their intentions to turn things around for him, but they still hide the exact details of where they truly came from, unsure if it was the right time to do so.

MacCready understands. Taking their word, he truly believes this me was a person from his world, blessed with 'the sight', who was going out of their way to find the solutions to the near hopeless issues that had been eating away at him. Instead of feeling scorn or disturbance, he's glad to be understood, and have a way out of the hole he's in--it is an insanely cathartic thing for him, and he expresses his relief and gratitude accordingly. But this me knows that they were still lying to his face about their own past, and feels that their acts aren't deserving of such high praise. Instead of being able to fully appreciate his gratitude, they carry an immense guilt for their disingenuity, alongside deep humility about themself. There's nothing like being the cause of your own problems.

Anyways, TLDR: I turned myself into an original character and I'm torturing them here! 😁

to further explain why this alternate me didn't just stick a stimpak in themself so they wouldn't have needed help checking their wound:

stims are expensive. YES i know Boston is a stimpak trove but bro just got here...

stims were originally intended as healing aids, and this alternate me realistically needed stitches first. It was also the only wound they got; nor was it severe enough to call for one right away. YES i know that's not how the game treats stimpaks, though.

Welcome to DreamSim

DreamSim is an RPG indie game project that is being developed by @n3r6-h3a6 (SUPER NH). NH is currently (trying to) self-learn Game Maker to be able to code at least a big amount of the game. They're also the visuals creator, designer and head writer (basically a solo project right now lol), but there has been a bunch of progress, especially in 2025!

DreamSim is about new technology "The Dream Simulator" that's been hyped around the therapitic and psychologist field in recent times. This technology inserts patient's minds into a world of therapitic wonders whenever they're asleep. This world helps them heal through their struggles, learn new things about themselves and connect with other asigned patients who go to the same proffesional, but most importantly, it helps them achieve their dreams.

The story revolves around Ina, a dreamless and depressed girl who joins a DreamSim server of 8 members in the hopes of finding out what her dream is before it's too late. Ina is highly troubled by her past self and past actions, so she also joins in order to overcome her harsh memories, accept them and improve as a person, but can she really do that? Along with her journey she learns more about and interacts with the other server members, who all have their own distinct animal avatars, personalities, struggles, and reasons for joining DreamSim.

Gameplay aspects of the Game are currently being discussed and are not final, but the game should have influence from typical RPG gameplay, visual novels and some unique original gameplay.

This page will post updates about the progress of the project, information about the game and some side art! There might be an ask option in the future if this blog continues to grow alongside the project, but not everything could be answered.

Hello my friend!

You won’t be at all surprised to know I do in fact ship my squid game otp 😆

1. What made you ship it?

The short answer is the scene in s2e2 where Junho flings Gihun up against the window. That scene changed my brain chemistry.

To get more personal, it also feels a tiny bit like a self insert, at least more so than other ships with Gihun, who I, like many of us, am profoundly attracted to.

There a lot of character traits I relate to in Junho—we even share a birthday! His ‘nothing bad can happen to me’ mindset we youngest siblings can get; his dogged pursuit of his mission to reach a sibling reminds me of my own brother going missing for some time and what it was like to think he was dead, to sneak out of the house at night and try to find him. His intense protectiveness of Inho, choosing to cover for him even after all he’d done, also really speaks to me. Throw into that my own tendencies to befriend older folks (it’s our daddy/mommy trauma) and looking at Junho feels like looking at a part of myself. Writing for him felt so natural and I really think it helped me develop my skill and voice in this fandom!

Additionally, it has been a BLAST to play with the desperate to please/projecting!Junho and hesitant to let anyone in/self-sabotaging!Gihun. As someone whose favorite flavor of yaoi is doomed, it’s been fun to push them off a cliff together in In the Weeds.

2. What are your favorite things about the ship?

Without getting into it, the kind of intimate, intense sex they can have with their respective damage.

I also think they can bring out things in one another—dark, awful things, as well as beautiful, restorative things. I’m also a sucker for an age gap.

3. Is there an unpopular opinion you have about the ship?

Yes. I don’t think these two would ever actually be in love or end up together. I think Junho would always choose Inho over Gihun, and Gihun would always choose the game over Junho. But I think their feelings for one another would still be intense, even if they wouldn’t have more than a few months of life-altering intimacy.

General rant involving personal matters and past trauma, check tags for reference.

As much as I enjoy tumblr, I find that anytime I use it I am doomed to come across things I don’t like. I mean, thats a given, but when its past the “2016 ship and let ship phase” of the internet, it gets tiresome. “Why cant we bring back 2015 internet when everyone was chill with random incest?” because most of us were barely pushing middle school and most definitely didn’t know better. Call it a failure of the adult fanbase, introducing amino and tumblr and deviantart to many young and impressionable people that came to see it as normalized. Thankfully, most of us have moved on and realized the faults of the past- our parents, or a lack thereof- and the enablers of the fandom that got away scot free.

It comes as no surprise that me, and many others, are not particular fans of the “solygbm” story, with its slander of characterization- Sans a rapist, Grillby a pedophile, abuse fetish, and ever so diligent self inserting of the author. Thats not to slander it- if you’re into the taboo, just indulge responsibly in designated areas is all I ask. I do come to find it repulsive though, as a “victim” to it. You would think that even as an ex frans and sans fangirl, I’d be more tolerant to it. Well, ex proshipper, as result of 7-10 years sca. The amino incidents… did make it worse but hey, character development or something.

It was never something publicly shared or indulged in- I think I knew better- but god did it fuck me. I do indeed blame the incest I was exposed to as a child, apparently was so normalized to the fault I hadn’t realized it until maybe, 13-14. Once hating that I’d become the example every anti use(proship affects young people and reality yadda ya). But there is such a fortunate truth in that argument. Thankful to god I had a mother who supported me through it all, god bless her sweet heart. Regretting the things I was enabled in- yea, looking at you RivenSkies on Amino. Imma catch you one day, you and that guy who harassed 12 year me for drawing humanized Rarity in random deviantart outfits.

Besides those faults, the problem with aus and is that one really can’t disconnect from that part of the fandom, being such a significant fixation and infouence that would issue losing some of my most valued friends. People that I’ve come to trust as of now, which is why I’m fine with people knowing this. I’ve simply decided to, for my own sake, stray away from the fandom itself. Undertale AUs, I mean.

Fiction is such a major component of reality. If I physically didn’t feel myself cringe and my heart sink a little lower every time I stumbled upon- and you know who you are- a frans post, when I’ve done what I can to reduce the sight from my mind, then I wouldn’t argue that fact so much. But it really does. Especially when its characters you have watched and mimicked for such a large majority of your life. Let’s face it- every fandom is fucked up. It seems the more innocent the game the more dubious its fans are. I really cant figure it out why but honestly, the aus and stories are the main factor keeping this fandom alive. Thats the charm of it all.

Anyway, backtracking from my thoughts on this favorite fandom of mine. I’ve decided that for my own sake, I spend a bit less time on this platform. Even all its gifts and glory, I really just can’t risk my happiness for something so rapant in the fandom. Im thankful for the people who have made this experience the best it was. Sorry if I scared anyone, this sounds awfully lot like a goodbye note LOL. Just expect activity to be ~3/4 times a week, short spurts of checking in and saying hi. Instagram- with Tiktoks awauted ban and increase of dubious content(cant search up anything without seeing 🌽), has became my safe haven. and like, obviously, the first character is sentient and obsessive(just how we like them!!) and so obviously, they know what reader’s been cheating on them!

“Wait, what is this smaller text?” You tried to read it when it disappeared, notifying you that the download was done. Which is why you expected to see the character you clicked on, but it was still the same one as before. “What the- ugh, is it a bug?” The clicking of the ‘back’ button echoed through the room, and soon you got fed up with it. Right before you pressed the restart button, a text from the character caught your eyes.

“Isn’t this the same text as that smaller one?” You commented, wondering why you were even talking to yourself. To have some made up company, maybe. Suddenly that one text turned into a series of begs and demands, and you read them with fascination.

Wait. See? This game had access to your camera? Fuck, did you allow them to? You couldn’t remember, but that the character is saying something like this, it was low-key giving you the chills.

They continued to pester your game, blabbering on and off about how they loved you. It was obsessive, possessive even. At this point you weren’t even interested in this Easter egg anymore, rather you were weirded out. “Dammit, gotta turn it off.” As if he could hear you as well, the text immediately changed.

: 〜{..Don’t do that, there will be consequences otherwise.}〜

The expression they had were the same as the ones you were used to, but their writing style became more unique. You scoffed to yourself, “what consequences? This is ridiculous, it’s just a game!” Then the loading screen appeared again, and the text said:

“What?!” You shouted, spamming the ‘no’ button, “of course not! All my progress…! It took seven hours to get here!” But to your dismay, it didn’t work, all of it was gone the moment you could access your game again. “No way, what-”

: 〜{..I’m sorry y/n, but please understand me,}

: 〜{..I’m a very jealous person.}

After reading that, you whispered under your breath, “you aren’t even a person, shut up.” Then you bawled your hands into fists and yelled, “those damn developers, this shitty bug ruined all my efforts!” You had to calm yourself before glancing at the screen again, pouting as you logged out.

: 〜{..I’ll do anything-}〜

“Nah, I won’t touch that fucking game again.” You snarled, then looked at the clock. It was past twelve already, a new day began. “Since I’m not sleepy yet I guess I’ll just do my dailies.” That was so strange, the way that character talked to you felt so real. At first it gave you a scare, tonight you won’t be able to sleep well. Then you closed that app, undecided about whether you should delete it or let it be.

For now you’ll just log into your other games, those aren’t that buggy at least. When you logged in, you were met with multiple red dots, telling you to do this and that. You when into the quest menu, just to see a quest you’ve never seen before. It told you to go into your character menu and talk with the character. Singular, not plural. One character only? Did you have to listen to their voicelines?

“Must be a new one.” You guessed and followed the instructions, when someone, something familiar appeared on your device. “W-what?!” It was the character from the game you just closed, the one that annoyed the shit out of you. “What the fuck are you doing here!” Shivers run down your spine, how was he in this game? This isn’t funny, did your device caught some kind of virus? And, why was he staring at you like that?

Selfshipping terms & resources

Want to get into selfshipping? Good for you! Here are some terms and other things you might want to know ^^

Selfshipping is when you imagine yourself (or an OC) in a relationship with a character you feel a connection with.

Ship is another word for "pairing".

“Yumeship” is another word for “selfship”.

Your “f/o” is the character you imagine yourself with. F/o means "fictional other", it is simply a play on the term “significant other”. F/os can be romantic, platonic, familial, queerplatonic, the list goes on.

A “self-insert” or “s/i” is a character created by you that’s used to ship with canon characters. A self-insert can be you, or just you with different features.

A person who is fictosexual and/or fictoromantic experience sexual and/or romantic attraction to fictional characters. It is a valid sexuality.

Proshipping and profiction are terms for people who are anti-censorship and accept all fiction, even if they personally don't vibe with it.

Comshippers, and darkshippers are people who like ships with darker themes like age gaps, abuse, incest, that kind of thing.

Doubles are people who have the same f/o as another selfshipper.

Also, selfshipping can be a coping mechanism or a hobby! Overall, it’s something that should make you happy.
