i absolutely do not vibe at all with any red hood steph concept ive ever seen because fucking nobody engages with it in any depth its just 🤔🤔 steph is basically the same as jason right? people who dont like jason online say so so it must be true~

like i need you first of all to walk back several steps and understand two major things about utrh and stephanie brown here. the first is that steph got into crime fighting in the first place bc she wanted to ~spoil~ the crimes of her c-list supervillain father. the second is that the core of the tragedy of the red hood is that batman is supposed to be his fucking dad.

so if you do want to do a red hood stephie concept here which. to be clear is not something i am INHERENTLY opposed to. you have a couple options to make it potentially coherent but you need to actually be deliberate and clear about what youre trying to do with that concept. you need to step away from jasons tragedy and look at hers and figure out where exactly her anger and hurt are coming from and who exactly theyre directed at, as well as what specifically in your au concept it would be so different than the canon one where when she comes back she wants to do pretty much the opposite of what jason wanted when *he* came back.

and. crucially. if the difference is the relationship she has to bruce being different you actually do need to show not tell that dude. im sorry but if you just *tell* me that in your universe that steph has a more deep and meaningful relationship to bruce i 100% always am like "ill believe it when i fucking see it". like, she has parents of her own and while that doesnt preclude having a more signficant relationship with bruce (see: timmy)... you really do have to do the legwork or it looks like youre just writing them out and asking us to take your word for it that Of Course steph wants bruce to adopt her, hes batman! gag, retch, spew. do notdo this.

FRANKLY in a reverse robins concept i vibe way more with steph as red robin than anything specifically her getting the dumpster costume from whoever you do put in the red hood role. (frankly x2 i still think if they really truly had to do the storyline they did in canon where shes still trying to do bruces dirty work for him and hires assassins to kill tim to ~make him better~ lmao she should have been the one who wore the Bad Robin uniform before tim got it instead of fuckin ulysses i just think it would have been more coherent and also funner for me personally)

they don't really know any of the batfam, they just took the place of an already existing person and is now having to live their (pretty sad) life. while the fam are feeling mountains and loads of guilt for not being there for you, for not protecting you like they should've—

in reality, it was really your fault you were shot in the first place. you sensed the bullet and could've dodged it easily, but then it would've hit the man in front of you, and you couldn't have let that happen. you're just not that type of person

in general, spidey doesn't really feel anything toward the fam. they think they're all pretty big assholes from how they act toward both them and dc!reader (as far as they can tell from the diaries and hundreds upon hundreds of messages left on delivered), but it's not spideys place to forgive them, so they kind of just never will.

and that's what drives them REALLY nuts because they're really trying their hardest and yet its like you want nothing to do with them!!! (you really just donr want to talk to them bc you have bigger problems to worry about; but they don't know that).

they have a soft spot for kids (which will play a part in the future story) and every spider is good with kids, so by default damian would probably be the easiest for spidey to like. (chapter 4 watch out for him hegfhehehe)

HOWEVER if we're talking about dc!reader, it's probably either dick or jason (talking about sibling/parent family, so no babs, steph, kate kane, luke fox etc.) as they did have a very strong bond with them until jason died.

it's less because they did the least to dc!reader and more because they simply just want the love of their two oldest brothers back—still craving the care they used to get that was robbed of them so unfairly.

I give Brian Michael Bendis (the writer on YJ19) a pass because I was following him on Twitter from the point YJ19 and the Wonder Comics imprint was announced, all the way through the end of that series.

From the second the announcement was made, his social media was completely inundated with people demanding that Stephanie be included in YJ19, entirely because she'd last been seen leaving Gotham with Tim. He also got flooded with asks about whether Cissie would make an appearance, or Aqualad (because YJ animated was still at the peak of its popularity and there was a whole contingent of fans who had zero clue that Kaldur was created for that show and that Jackson Hyde looks like but isn't exactly him), but with Steph? He and his co-creators got full on harassed, and it only got worse because she happened to turn up in a flashback in Issue 4. There were Internet journalists who derailed interviews he was giving to hype up his new Black and gay heroines just to demand more Stephanie, it was bad.

And then there was this whole mess that's going to be hard to explain succinctly. But it boils down to: given the timing of when the series was announced, they almost certainly had issues #1-#3 fully drawn and either at or on its way to the printer, issues #4-6 at least partially drawn and colored, issues #7-9 completely scripted and possibly with pencil drafts under way, and issues #10-12 drafted, with an outline already prepared for the second year if they thought they were going to go beyond 12.

But then something happened after the announcement -- and it had to have been after the announcement, otherwise they could've pushed back their release dates -- that led them to rewrite the entire second half of the year, everything from the end of #5 on. You can tell because the covers, which get made ahead of the rest of the issue, start going really wonky from #6 on and don't match up with the contents of the story, plus there's disconnect in the early solicitations. Also they skipped a month between #6 and #7 while making #7 basically a filler issue with guest artists who happen to have very simple, quick-draw cartoony styles that are easier to produce in a hurry.

That kind of turn-around on a publishing project is nuts, it's not fun to deal with. I would be surprised if Bendis had time to give his artists more than a "shitty rough draft" to work off of. But like I said he was still getting this constant barrage of demands for Steph so, as long as he was doing rewrites anyway, he took the chance to drop her in, or maybe the editor insisted he do so to try to bring in more readers. Either way, he just didn't have the time to make it good or put any thought into it.

I honestly feel so bad for their whole creative team. That's such a terrible situation to be in, and the first five issues make me feel like they were really putting their hearts into it. It's so sad it got derailed so badly.

honestly the other side of want was out of my comfort zone because i never imagined i'd actually incorporate magical/sci-fi elements in my writing... it was challenging to make it seem realistic enough but also. not focus too much on it bc the mechanics of it weren't that relevant to the story... i spent way too much time thinking about the mechanics anyway tho slkjlsjfd....... i think it kinda made me feel a little more free in regards to trusting my gut no matter how weird an idea might seem at first.... and made me more confident about starting big projects.....

Saw mysterycirtus/roseworth’s ranking of the Batfamily in skill and I’m curious of your ranking (if you have one)

obligatory i don't love power scaling but ! i do think abt this i won't lie. in terms of pure combat skill then obviously cass is #1. she was a weapon even when she was but a twinkle in her father's eye. she's the closest to superhuman a non-meta can get. i would say bruce and dick are pretty equally matched. bruce has more brute force and stamina on his side but like greta mysterycitrus said, dick has been a trained acrobat since he was a little kid and he very much uses that to his advantage. i think if you removed emotions from the equation bruce would win by a very very very narrow margin but it would be a pyrrhic victory. (damian's too young to tell but he's also been trained pretty much from birth.) babs and tim were both in gymnastics/training of some sort/etc from childhood and are like the most obsessively determined people ever so they are absolutely forces to be reckoned with. steph and duke are not the world's best fighters by any means but they're not exactly white belts. like they probably seem kind of mid as fighters but u have to remember they only seem that way because they're next to batman and his trained-from-infancy children. they will still kick your ass

that said i would not rank them purely on combat skill bc that's not all they have going on! there's a lot you have to consider. pure combat/fighting skill yes, but also ability to strategise, to improvise, empathy, people skills, and of course detective work. generally i think i wouldn't rank them so much as say that they all have different strengths. i hate the whole trend of "x is the ___ one" but like. they do all have different strengths. it would be a boring story if they all had the exact same abilities or were all so perfect at everything that they never needed to work together to balance out their weaknesses yk? maybe dick is the better fighter, but tim has a better chance than dick does at defeating the baddie of the week if he's done his research. i feel like when everything is measured, they're all more or less on the same level, but they all have different strengths

not going to explain bruce because he's bruce. he's the prototype. do i think he's better than everyone at everything? no. but he's good at a lot of things, and more importantly, he's got decades of experience in balancing it all

dick is a jack of all trades on par with bruce — he's just good at a lot of things. and also like bruce, he has decades of experience balancing it all. ultimately he gets a nudge towards the skill/style axis because he doesn't just fight, he puts acrobatics into it. which is crazy! his absolutely batshit combat style is kind of his greatest strength in a fight, even beyond strategy and knowing how to throw a punch in the first place

cass is a very, very good fighter with a vast skillset, but it's emphasised throughout her time on-panel that she's still learning how to be a detective. that's why the tim and cass teamup is so great (and effective!) -- tim's not a bad fighter, but detective-ing comes more easily to him; cass isn't necessarily a bad detective, but when it comes down to it she's leagues better at combat. they balance one another out.

tim: see above. he's a good fighter and absolutely insane with a bo staff, but remember that he did so well in that fight against king snake because he used the staff as a tool to distract and disorient him before he ever landed a hit with it

jason is kind of an enigma to me because he's sort of whatever the writer needs him to be in the moment. like bruce and dick, he's kind of a jack of all trades, but ultimately his greatest strength is just... taking people out. he's a great strategist and a great planner and a great detective, but that's outweighed by his ability to be brute force up close and have good aim from a distance.

i personally feel like i haven't read enough steph, duke, or damian (yet) to rank them on this bit but like... you get it. may revisit when i finish new earth and/or get to my duke reading. we will see

lool actually i generally dont, and it's so bad! i always lose track of time when i draw, and then have to remind myself to eat. im working on it. 😅 when i do remember though, i usually have a bottle of water, an iced capp from tims, or an apple in my left hand while i draw with my right. ;P

only sometimes! cool-downs are more common for me though. and i just doodle something quick, either from the gigantic list of ideas i've amassed, or something that's been on my mind. it's usually a character posing, maybe in a specific outfit i've had in mind for them, or a ship being lovey dovey. the danger is that sometimes the "warm-up" turns into an actual Thing and then i dont work on what i was supposed to. 💀

uhhh recently, this akaza fireworks piece or this stephanie brown glitter gif. the amount of notes they have dont compare to how much i like them aha. i can figure out why they didn't do well, and i can see how the akaza piece especially is mid, but it was a big learning piece for me so i like it--doubly so because i never actually meant for it to be a rendered piece. the steph piece makes me happy cuz i think she would like it, and also it glitters. ✨️✨️ ah! and this kuroyaku valentines piece from 2021, bc it holds a special place in my heart. i love the ship, and it's the first time i achieved exactly the sort of vibe i wanted digitally, esp in regards to palette & lighting. it sort of marks an evolution in my digital art journey, i guess. :')

Who's your favorite character and why?

Oh man I have a problem with choosing faves bc i'm just so indecisive !!! I usually analyze characters and get to appreciate their themes and personalities aka how well they are written, so it's so hard for me to dismiss others in favour of A Single One... bc i genuinely appreciate so many characters...

i usually have a character rotation in my brain honestly... this week it's bruce... last week it was barbara... damian... cass... tim... jason... helena... kate... all of these characters are so interesting to me... and they all tackle different things and have different personalities...

i think that in general, though, i tend to gravitate towards characters with interesting moral dilemmas... especially if they are complex and i get to play around with their actions and feelings.... i like to think as a hobbie, as weird as that sounds LOL

so i think that my final veredict is gonna be: jason and bruce (barbara is a close second)

5. What's your favorite comic book sibling relationship?

hmmmmm, i'd need to read more comics for this bc lately ive mostly been reading solo runs, but if i had to say any so far i think it's helena and tim (does this count? it counts)

i think the way they bounce off each other is soso funny, tim is the most unsufferable little gremlin to her and helena has to put up with it. he looks her up and annoys her but they would both take a bullet for each other. do u know what i mean? that's real young brother/older sister ism

I know I'd be able to write about Kate (in which case I'd write about lesbianism) or Barbara (in which case I'd write about girl rage) and even about Steph (more girl rage) but there's something so enticing to me about Jason

Because to an extent u can't *not* empathize with him during utrh, he has a point even if barely, and the way he's grown to see the world and his ideals comes from the tragedy of his death and resurrection and his subsequent feelings about it, about bruce, about himself and gotham and u need the slightest bit of compassion ontop of all the condemnation of his wrongdoings to make it right

like. there are *so* many examples where writers have resorted to demonizing him and butchering what he wants and what he says it's kind of frustrating. and i think the way forward to truly giving the jason from utrh what he needs, not what he wants is soso interesting and full of posibilities to explore

i want him to see the other side of the coin, i want him to come to terms with what the use of violence means and where that puts him, i want him to be questioned, to be faced with the consequences of what he did in utrh, to reach his own conclusions and find out what he wants isn't what will make him right again. i want him to come to terms with his own tragedy and the way he's destroyed himself to prove a point, to see how symilar he is to bruce and how that should tell him all he needs to know.
