An aspect of OFMD I feel is deeply underrated is the magnitude by which Stede’s empathy grows and develops over the course of the story. He starts out privileged on some axes, traumatized on others, and deeply self-centered, and he subjects everyone around him to at least a little of that. Ed included!
One big thing I love about Stede is that he learns from his missteps and others’ reactions to them. It’s not always immediate, it’s rarely showy, it’s certainly not linear, and nevertheless it’s there.
The crew haven’t borrowed books because most of them can’t read? He starts reading to them. He learns to consult and defer to the crew, even though he reverts to calling them “barbarians.” (We all saw that suit. I can cut him a little slack.)
He reacts to Ed’s panicked muttering about eating a prawn with escargot tongs with a “how could you?” Then he quickly grasps the depth of Ed’s distress and goes to set the fancy fucks on fire in his defence. By the time Ned Low draws breath for his first insult against Ed, he is already a dead man walking. Because now Stede knows.
I think it’s important to watch a wealthy white male protagonist develop this way. For all that it happens in a gay pirate rom com fantasy world, it’s a realistic demonstration of what it takes to behave as a good person, partner, friend, ally…. Especially once you step outside of the context you know best.
Stede isn’t perfect. His development isn’t perfect. But he’s kind and it’s consistent, and I love him and his creators for it.
@celluloidbroomcloset and @piratecaptainscaptainpirates recently made posts that inspired this one.

God I had such a wonderful literature teacher in high school. It pains me to admit that I spent most of his classes either sleeping or daydreaming about death and other equally depressing subjects. I remember thinking even then, I used to like books. Why can't I get myself through this readings why are all of these poems so lifeless to me? And like the rest of my classmates I just googled the Spanish equivalent for SparkNotes for all the readings and got a 10 in every exam. Now I find myself seeking out those same poems and sonnets and books and wishing I could turn back in time to actually listen to this passionate guy who had been all over Europe and knew 5 languages and lived so much and was so specific about which translation to get for every poem and have strong opinions about 10 other translations. I just want to grab my past self and shake them hard and scream "WAKE UP!!!!!! This thing you're ignoring right now will be the only spark of hope and joy you will find in your 20s please it's can save your life NOW if you manage to open your eyes and ears for a little bit"
Now I'm getting a degree in english, and I'm an auxiliary teacher at a primary school and it really feels a bit depressing to know that sometimes not even a great, passionate and talented teacher can make someone with an underlying interest in the subject actually pay attention and enjoy a high school class. Or maybe I was just an idiot and it's a me problem. Or maybe literature is meant to pass you by the first time around and make you go and get it out of your own will at your own time.
I think there's definitely something to be said for finding the right literature at the right time, absolutely--but I also think the fact that you still remember this teacher and the incredible passion and attentiveness he brought to those classes, that you are holding this recognition close to you now, even if you weren't able to give it the attention you wish you had at the time, counts for something, too 💕 in spite of everything something of his teaching still remained with you, even if it's being appreciated after the fact, and I think that, for most teachers, that impact alone means a great deal! Maybe you didn't appreciate the class itself, but you are appreciating the poems and those outlive every classroom and what greater influence is there than that? (And sometimes it's not even the subject itself that remains with you, but the actual teacher. I had an incredible English teacher also, but I know the impact she left on some of my friends had little to do with the poems and plays and everything to do with who she was as a person, and this is, I think, one of the most important things that come from a marvellous teacher)
I don't think you were an idiot at all--I think that whatever you were going through at the time must have been so immense, and as frustrating as it is to look back and wish you could have managed things differently, I think it's so important to allow yourself some grace for the fact that who you are now, looking back, and who you were then, are two different people--some circumstances, I think, are beyond a pupil and a teacher's control but we do the best we can with what we have, and what you have now, and what you had back then, probably look very, very different. Have you ever considered reaching out to your former literature teacher? Writing a letter or an email to let him now what you feel about his classes now, being older, and what this recognition means to you?
I think it's amazing that you are where you are now, with the passion you have now, and also with the awareness, even if you couldn't appreciate it at that time, of what a passionate teacher can bring because it will help make you a more attentive and better teacher as a result. I think teaching is one of those vocations you need to love with your entire being and if you can bring that love and that attentiveness with you to the best of your ability at any given time, then this counts for something, even if not immediately in the classroom itself 💕

Between last season of Our Flag Means Death and this season I became much more involved in the community. I cosplayed, I went to the panel at C2E2, I got my ass on tumblr, and it’s made me think A LOT.
At the end of s1 I just assumed everything was fine. I didn’t know that a second season wasn’t confirmed yet, so I just assumed Lucius was alive and I assumed we would see Ed and Stede reunite, etc etc.
But now, I understand how people probably felt. And I see how people feel at the end of s2. About Izzy. About gentlebeard. About all of it. The uncertainty of this show’s future can really color the way we feel (glad to hear that David Jenkins has plans, but annoyed that HBO is so hesitant to greenlight it. Just another reason to be mad at streaming services).
But one thing I’m feeling right now that doesn’t change, regardless of what happens in the show or HBO’s decision, is gratitude. It’s really cool to be where the discourse is. I’m excited to keep watching it happen and maybe even offer my two cents every now and then. There’s a lot of gratitude in my heart right now for people who care enough about something to talk about it, because it adds an awesome layer of engagement to my media consumption that I find SO COOL. I’ve missed out on that. Like you don’t know what I would give to have been present for the discourse and discussion when some of the other things I love were in their prime. I’m glad to be here now.

Ok story time
I am making a temperature blanket. For those unfamiliar, it is a knitted or crocheted blanket in which colours are assigned to the temperature outside. Every day, you crochet/knit a certain amount in the colour that corresponds to that day's temperature.
I am creating this, rather strangely, for my physics teacher (he puts up with far too much of my bullshit and I have been assured by many people that a blanket is a reasonable gift). It's a nice gift, it's a representation of the year's climate, it's thoughtful.
Slight problem though.
It's 7'6" wide.
Tumblr media
That's uhh... 2.3 meters... :/
This is a very reasonable gift and a lasting memory of putting up with my bullshit.

Sierra Six being my S/I's bodyguard and not quite differentiating the lines between "I need to be closer to Keri in order to keep Keri safe" vs "I need to be closer to Keri due to these... budding personal feelings that I don't understand that seem to be consuming me whole but I'm sure that's normal and nothing I need to dwell on whatsoever"
Such as making sure her ice cream isn't poisoned so he taste tests it first. but then it evolves into her spoon feeding him a few more bites... minutes later they're both sharing it together. then it becomes a weekly routine, get ice cream every Sunday afternoon
Or he checks everywhere in her room before she sleeps, under the bed, the closet, makes sure the windows are locked. then he sits in the room closest to that bedroom door and stays awake typing on his computer or something. but her nightmares make her jolt awake crying out, so he's rushing to her side and calming her. Minutes later he's crawling into bed next to her and cuddling her like a good bodyguard does. because all bodyguards cuddle in bed with the person they're protecting, right? sure, he's sure of it. yeah. This is an every night ordeal until finally she asks him to just sleep in the same bed with her so if she has a nightmare he can just be there immediately. and he's all calm and collected "sure of course I can do that for you" but he isn't sleeping immediately. he isn't in that habit. he's fully alert of every creak in the wood, the branches snapping outside, every tiny noise. His cheeks are on FIRE and he's trying to hide the shake in his hands when Keri suddenly rolls over in her sleep, her face pressed against his chest, unconsciously wrapping her arms around him. And he's wrapping his strong arms around her, petting her hair, suppressing the urge to kiss her forehead. YEAH SURELY ALL BODYGUARDS DO THIS. And for the first time in a very, very long time, Keri doesn't have any bad dreams that night.
Making sure he's always turning his head towards her and annunciating as clear as possible because he knows she needs to read lips to fully understand someone. He starts wearing chapstick. He starts sharing it with her. He tries not to think about how that chapstick is the closest he'll ever get to her lips. He tries not to dwell on that.
#saw an interview where ryan said that Six just wants so badly to live a little bit#and he's destined for this life of danger and he will never be free from it and it's all he craves#he doesn't want to be a spy. he doesn't want to be an assassin.#he wants to eat chicken nuggets and watch netflix and fall asleep on the couch#he doesn't want to jolt awake gasping every night. he doesnt want to look over his shoulder every 2 seconds#he doesnt want to be on high alert 24/7 knowing anyone and everyone is after him constantly#and he cant even trust the organization he was accepted into#so when he finds something that he enjoys like... a comfortable shirt or a delicious meal#or getting a new tattoo or listening to a good song. he holds onto that.#he just wants to live. and ryan said he cherishes those moments where he's living his life just a little#like at the party in the first scene he's just eating chicken and laughing a little with Dani#so I feel like w/ me he starts finding those moments more and more#bc I'm insisting Six have some more ice cream. Six come see this movie with me#Six you don't have to hold my bags just hold my hand. Six let's get you a Kenough shirt#Six let's go to that new pizza place and let me order you your favorite toppings. my treat#Six I saw this pendant and thought of you. Six I drew this for you. Six this song reminds me of you.#and slowly over time it's not just a bodyguard and the girl he's protecting#it's two friends teaching each other how to find love in living again#his love for the smallest moments gives her that bit of motivation to live too#his appreciation for the small things. those little gratitudes. they add up#I LOVE HIM SO MUCHHHHH#love notes#💕♡☆ I'll always protect you ☆🖤🎆#IT FEELS SO GOOD TO WRITE LOVE NOTES AGAINNNNN

Say a Blessing
Before You Eat
Saying a blessing before a meal emphasizes the interconnectedness of the spiritual and material worlds.
It can be seen as a symbolic act that acknowledges the Divine presence or essence within the food and expresses gratitude for the sustenance it provides.
Hermetic teachings promote the idea of seeing the spiritual aspect within all things, including food.
By offering a blessing, one connects with the higher aspects of reality, recognizing that the physical nourishment received from the meal aligns with the spiritual nourishment or energy that sustains and vitalizes the body and soul.
A blessing before a meal can serve as a reminder to be mindful and present during the act of eating, fostering gratitude, appreciation, and a deeper connection to the divine and natural order of the cosmos.
