Hey! I'm getting into writing and I'd like to know how you would go about hiding the supernatural or Eldritch at the edges of a reasonable scenario. Things like someone fleeing through ruins while being pursued, and nobody notices that they seem to have unlimited stamina and require no light to see in the dark. Excitement or ignorance would make these things difficult to notice. I would like your thoughts about creating similar scenarios. As an added detail, the person fleeing would also be unaware. They assume they are normal, and will convince themselves of this if they must.

Whatever response you give, even if you're unsure, is great. I'm looking for an outside input and something to think about. You could insult me for all I care, reactions have meanings beyond the scrawl on a screen.

I have written some mystery before and although I am not an expert, I could certainly give you some advice.

The mistery is, basically:

If you have two characters who are brothers, unless you say it the reader can't know it. For example, imagine that a story begins with two persons in a dark tunnel talking to each other, the conversation is somewhat petty, and imagine that one of the characters says "how did mom make the mistake of giving me a brother like you?" In a sarcastic way, and then the other responds in the same way, here the first character interrupts him saying "My brother has been dead for six months."

This, like the beginning of a story, is somewhat disconcerting and raises doubts for whoever reads it and from there the story can continue to develop.

In the mystery genre, the questions you generate are the most important thing, and you must control your reader like a puppet, very meticulously, you must plan everything to make them believe what you want them to believe and maintain consistency in the story.

If your character is, for example, fleeing from a wolf in the middle of a forest and has to jump a very large cliff and the character has (the ability) to jump over it, you would have to describe the fear, or the character's reaction and thought, as jump the cliff, leave it in the background, imagine that then a sheriff walks over it and in a calmer and more tense scene tells him that that cliff was more than five meters (it is practically impossible for the character, being a regular person, to be able to jump it) here it would be a shock for the character since it was not difficult for him to jump over it. That would give you to create a whole mystery and doubt in the character from then on.

As a last example, let's take over the garden wall, before the last chapter, many of us probably thought that the story was set in the middle medieval period, like the 1700s/1800s, since everything had made us think that, but then we realize that it is a sheeting a little modern (2010 or something) but we, without seeing the last chapter, couldn't know it

How do people with ADHD manage writting longer Fics ? I love all my projects and want to eventually finish them but it feels like after banging out first 2 k words it's hard to get back to it ?

as an aroace, I don't know how to write relationships very well, so I thought I would ask if you have any advice on writing polyamorous relationships.

Depends on the type of relationship ? Is everyone involved love (romantically) everyone else ? Do they only love one person ? Do they love multiple ? Keeping a small chart can help with remembering this type of things.

Remember that not everyone will treat two partner the same way, I am gonna use the Jade Winglet as an example, I am here assuming everyone is with everyone for simplicity but it can be applied to friendship as well:

While Winter might joke around or give sass to Qibli, Kinkajou or Carnelian, he knows Moon or Turtle are somewhat more insecure and might try to reasure them more and be careful. Carnelian, Moon and Turtle are good to talk about feelings of sadness or uncertainty while Qibli and (again) Carnelian can take angry rants more easily

Moon might know that Turtle and Carnelian needs more words of affirmation, while Qibli prefers physical touch and Winter and Kinkajou might enjoy quality time more

So yeah, think about personalities and love language, both in what they like to recieved and in what they give, it's kind of like the type adventages in Pokemon

How did u give your ocs for ol2 so much character... how did you flesh them out so well..

I really like media analysis ( even if i’m not the best ) and I love working on my oc on every shapes and instant that could define them as characters. Thing is with my game mc it tend to last longer ( been working on Valentin for almost two years now ? ) so they get a lot of details with time :o

Bonus I also have a big problem with daydreaming and scenarios, I have over 420 oc this is a good sign that I spend a bit too much time in my creativity…

To be honest It’s also usualy because I love reading about character relationship and little details about said relationship that I then love to add it in my characters. It’s like « i see something I like, I search why I like it and then I copy paste »

Also one of my main reasons to make my mc diverse in games is because I want to make representation for thing I want to see more and so I do research.

I really recommend doing research by directly seeing real people’s return about experience ( ex for Darcie I went trough some blogs of a girl who shared anecdotes about her teenage life wearing hearing aid ) or just search tips or informations that are backed up with resources ( ex research made by a recognized establishment )

But making research takes time which can be boring and I understand that not everyone’s cup of tea so how else could you work on characters ? Try to ask questions you can answer by yourself.

So my advice to anyone trying to flesh out characters try with the basic « why, how, when, and ?» for any questions relating your chatacter.

Why does Valentin struggle with her body ? Because of gender norms and beauty standards on social media

How does it impact her ? She become self conscious and try to overdo it to fit in the standard but it makes her miserable.

When ? During her time where she’s at her lowest when her friends are cold and too busy for her.

And ? What do I do with that information ? I use it to think of the fact Valentin sees her life trought the lense of someone who is self conscious.

And also my last advice : you are allowed to rewrite stuff about your characters. Nothing is set into stones you can always add or take off some facts if they no longer align with what you want your character to be.

I am looking for a beta reader if anyone would be interested? It’s for my new fan fiction idea.,

Summary: Titanic story line, but, with a twist. Gilbert and his little sister boar the Titanic after the unexpected death of their parents. Hoping for a better life. Anne comes aboard the Titanic with Marilla after loosing Matthew hoping for a better life as well. When the three of them meet, it’s a strong bond that nothing can break them. Not even the devastating tragedy of the Titanic can break that bond.

I know some people are against my story line and plot, but, if I get a gold beta reader and if someone likes Titanic/Anne of green gables like I do, I would really appreciate the help. I would give the beta reader credit to.

I would like someone to help me with stronger sentences, make my story stronger, help me describes scenes and emotions, maybe point me in the right direction on how to get reviews.

If anyone can help me, I would appreciate it. I never had a beta before. I’m not exactly sure on how this work. But, I’m willing to give it a try. I have my first chapter semi started. It’s a rough draft of course.

If you're writing *character* x oc, stop putting *character* x reader and vice versa!!

IT ISN'T THE SAME FUCKING THING.

And if you're writing *characterA* x *characterB/reader/yn*, stop putting *chatacterA* x *some other character/oc!! It is NOT THE SAME THING!!! It's annoying as fuck to go under a specific tag for specific fanfiction like Tsu'tey x reader and seeing Jake x reader/oc or Tsu'tey x oc!

And on a personal note, if you're writing two+ characters and/or reader platonically, please use +, not x. X, to me, means romantically or sexually.

Also add proper warning to your fanfiction(s) and TAG THEM PROPERLY!

Edit: Also, shipping a character with a different version of themselves (different demension/universe, AU, gender bent, ect) DOES NOT count as an x reader fanfic. It's basically incest.

WRITING TIP: Make your dialogue beats do more.

A beat isn’t just filler; it’s how you write the silence.

The best beats reveal what’s felt, not said:

– hesitation

– discomfort

– tension

– hidden motive

What’s a beat?

A dialogue beat is a small action or thought that shapes rhythm and reveals what’s left unsaid.

Avoid:

“Sure,” she said, with a shrug.

(Filler beat. Adds no emotional value.)

Use beats with intent:

“Sure,” she said, without looking up from her phone.

(dismissive)

“It’s fine,” she said. The fight was over. And she’d lost.

(self-censorship)

“I’m fine.” He lined up the silverware again - and again.

(anxiety)

A good beat doesn’t echo the line - it complicates it.

Now, I think it's time to move onto the very purpose of me starting this.

So, point number one: the basics of fictional politics.

You think that most stories don't have politics?

Most stories just aren't focused on it. Unless your character is the last surviving human in a post apocalyptic world, a secluded monk or some kind of Robinson Crusoe, they will live in society. And where society appears politics follows.

You want to ensure that your readers (at least that part of them that understands politics a little bit) won't cry bloody tears reading your latest creation? Then put some thought into world building.

Now, there are two options when it comes to writing the political (or, think in broader terms - social) part of your story.

First is obviously a sociopolitical system that really exists (or existed at some point in the past).

It's the easier option as you don't have to come up with all the peculiar things like social hierarchy, power legitimacy sources or societal norms of behaviour. It's all already here, you only need to weave it into the tapestry of your story, making it interesting for other people to read.

My advice will be simple: research, research and more research. Make it detailed and make it systematic, and most certainly don't use things like Wikipedia without cross-checking the facts. Some people change the articles there for fun. I did it myself before tests when I worked in university in order to catch those geniuses who tried to cheat. You might think it’s mental, but I’ll let you know it worked.

So, check the facts and use at least two or three sources of information. That will save you from mistakes, personal opinions and propaganda. Because, and I hate to disappoint you here if you haven't got it yet, most sources on society are somewhat unreliable and full of ideological bullshit. Some are just more obviously biased than others.

Depending on how deep you want to delve into the political side of your story, you might need to simply gather facts or gain a deeper understanding of people's behaviour and beliefs that formed and defined it.

Let's say: your story takes place in the USA and one of your characters is mildly interested in the ongoing presidential race. You’d need a couple of facts, maybe some ties between your character's social status and their opinions of the candidates, and that's it.

It would be completely different if one of your characters is a part of the team of a candidate. Then a lot of their life revolves around politics in general and the particular process, so you’d need to know some intricacies of elections, especially what the whole process looks like on the inside.

That being said, the purpose and the plot of your story will define how deep your research should be. Still, quality is what matters.

Second option is more complicated (and more exciting): creating an original political system.

That would require your imagination, yes, but you’ll also need to actually understand the ‘how’s and ‘why’s. Because, surprise surprise, there are reasons our society is like it is. The same would naturally be true about any kind of it, from epic fantasy to post-apocalyptic dystopia.

There are two ways to go about the creation of society in your own world: building from scratch and basing it on some real-life examples. More often than not people choose the second one because not only is it easier to develop into something complete, but familiar shapes help readers to relate with the characters they read about. Ironically, that doesn't save many authors from making the most glaring mistakes.

Either way, when creating your own society and political system the first thing you need to determine is the starting point. ‘Well, that much is obvious,’ you could say. The trick here is to know exactly what your foundation is, so you can confidently build the whole structure upon it.

For example, you are writing fantasy in a medieval setting. You choose Western Europe of the mid-fourteenth century as a foundation for your story. That means that you have some basic things like who has power, how the state is organised, what are relationships between social classes. But you also need to think of things that make your world different from Western Europe of the said period.

Or you want to write sci-fi and decide to build other planets’ societies yourself. That's the most rational decision if what you envision differs too much from what you know about the real-world examples. But that means that you have to create the whole basis from the simplest norms of behaviour before moving to something as complex as politics. Basically, you’ll have to make at least sketches of the whole history and social development to the point where your story starts.

In the end, just like any other part of your story, the social and political side demands a lot of attention and detailed planning. That is, if you want it to look believable. You're in for hours upon hours of research or world building. And some results of it might only get one or two mentions in the final draft of your story. But that's what makes it complete, what gives the world details necessary for the readers to fully immerse themselves. If anything, I’d want my story to be life-like and my characters easy to imagine. What about you?

Okay hi, I am working on a fake game partially inspired by Funger 2(just a tiny bit okay).

It will mostly be in written form like a videogame guide but it will also have an OST.

If it's not too much work, could you share what your outlining process is like? I always feel a little lost when I try outlining my fics and I know the process is different for everyone but I feel like it would help to know what others do. Every time I try to google help I get processes for original novel writing, and it doesn't feel as applicable to writing a short fanfic.

There are actually a few different ways I outline, and sometimes it depends on the length of the fic and how complex the plot is.

I'll use one of my saved radiostatic prompts as an example (it also gives me an excuse to sit down and actually outline it hehe)

So, sometimes just the prompt itself is a good enough outline for me (this is dependent on how long I think the fic is going to be. If it's short, sometimes the prompt itself works and I don't need to go in-depth. I say "prompt" but that also can mean a specific scene in your head that you want to write, or a concept, or even a piece of fan-art that inspired you).

Here's the paragraph prompt I wrote for this radiostatic one-shot/short fic (spoilers, I guess):

So sometimes, just this is enough for me to start writing the fic (my prompts do tend to get a little big because I like to add a lot of detail - about the scene or concept that grabbed my attention - so that I capture all the vibes and emotions that I want to incorporate.

But sometimes, it helps to go more in-depth so I'm not overwhelmed trying to get to the part of the fic that I want to write (NOTE: It is totally fine if you write out the scene/parts that you want to write the most, even if it's in the middle or the end. You can always fill in the blanks after. Or you can just post the scene you wanted to write without adding more. It's up to you).

I like to figure out what scenes happen that lead up to the parts I want to write, so sometimes, I'll make a bullet-point list of chronological scenes, plot-points, and details. For example:

And etc... you continue on until you've hashed out the sequence of events that take place in the story. This doesn't have to be super detailed (it can be really brief and to the point) and doesn't it have to be super clinical either. Just have fun and write down whatever silly thoughts you have in your head.

It's really just about putting down the sequence of events starting from the very beginning to the very end. You can keep it simple like the above example

You can make it even more detailed by doing an in-depth summary of the fic, scene by scene, plot point by plot point, until you get to the end (this is what I usually do because it gets everything planned out and on the page, down to the smallest details). For example:

And then it goes on like this until I've outlined the entire fic. You can be silly with this. Just have fun. Let yourself ramble and get all you're ideas out. Don't try to stick to a rigid plan, let the story flow naturally.

Then, once I've finished my outline, I use it as a guide as I write the rough draft. The thing about outlines is that you don't have to follow exactly what you planned. It's okay to diverge or adds things or cut things out. It really is just a loose guide to help you through the events of the story and get your thoughts on paper.

Additionally: You don't even have to fully finish the outline if you don't want to. Sometimes you get half of it done before you want to start writing, and that's fine. The rest of the story will reveal itself as you go.

If I'm doing a multi-chaptered fic, sometimes I'll break the overall idea of the story into pre-determined chapters and summarize it section by section. Or, I'll just be a maniac and summarize the entire fic in one big, super long, super detailed block of text. Another staticradio fic I'm currently outlining is 16,152 words long and I'm not even close to being done. I expected this fic to get super long and complex, so writing it out in a very chronological and detailed manner helps it feel less daunting. AND now I have every plot point, twist, emotional scene, and bit foreshadowing planned out and already placed where I want it to show up in the fic. It's great. It makes me life easier when I actually buckle down and write the rough draft.

Just as a final note, I want to say that everyone's process is different. This is how I outline, but I know it won't work for everyone. It's all about finding what method works for you.

I'll say that one of the most important to do while outlining is simply having fun with it. Make it your hype list. Make every scene you jot down a scene you're excited to write. Make yourself want to write it so it doesn't feel like a chore to slog through.

Best advice I've ever recieved: If you're bored writing a scene, the audience will be bored reading it.
