I genuinely feel like an alien compared to my coworkers when they try to chat with me about things like dating and weight loss. like what are you SAYING about "oh you know it's just so hard to make your man understand the instructions you give him?" why are you trying to connect with me by complaining that you gained 15 pounds? is this how most people form connections in the workplace? i for real do not get it

Weight loss is a completely morally neutral personal choice that anyone can make for any reason, but if you choose to lose weight because you hate your fat body, please do the internal work to get over that internalized fatphobia before or during your weight loss efforts. I’ve seen far too many fat people become skinny and immediately turn their internalized fatphobia outwards, and it’s a bad time for everyone. If you have to keep the weight off through a strictly maintained diet and exercise, it’s pretty much inevitable that you will gain some weight back at some point in your life (likely more than you had in the first place if yo-yo dieting is in play), and you will find that all the hatred you projected at the fat community will come back to bite you in the ass with twice the power. Work on loving your fat self while you’re there, and if you choose to lose weight then work on continuing to love your old fat self. Life will feel much better for yourself and the fat people around you that way.

I'm listening to a lot of Maintenance Phase (bc I love it) and this comes up sometimes, so I'll just be sat here thinking about how common it is for little kids to grow up watching their moms and other women in their life jump from diet to diet. Just as ambient background noise in your childhood, the adults around you obsess over calories aloud, express guilt over eating enjoyable food, frame exercise as a form of punishment for eating, and so on.

One of my biggest pet peeves is the assumption that something has to be sad for it to be tragic.
I've always been a big believer of the 'Apollo has an awful love life'/'Apollo is plain unlucky with love' line of thinking but it does bother me that the general reasoning for that statement is given to the concept of 'Apollo is somehow undesireable and thus rejected' (Cassandra/Daphne/Marpessa) or 'his lovers die young and thus their love is unfulfilled' (Cyparissus/Hyacinthus/Coronis). I personally think that's a very unfortunate way of looking at things - not only because it neglects the many perfectly cordial entanglements and affairs Apollo has had, both mortal and divine - but because it presents a very shallow interpretation of the concepts of love and loss and how loss affects people.
Apollo can still grieve lovers that have a long, healthy life. The inherent tragedy of an immortal who knows his lovers and children will die and cannot stop it does not stop being tragic simply because those lovers and children live long, fulfilled lives. The inherent tragedy of loss does not stop being tragic simply because someone knows better than to mourn something that was always going to end.
What is tragic is not that Apollo loves and loses but that loss itself follows him. Apollo does not love with the distance of an immortal, he does not have affairs and then leaves never to listen to their prayers again. He does not have offspring and then abandon them to their trials only to appear when it is time to lead them to their destinies. He raises his young, he protects the mothers of his children, he blesses the households that have his favour and multiplies their flocks that they may never go hungry. He educates his sons, he adorns his daughters and even in wrath he is quick to come to his senses and regret the punishments he doles out.
Apollo loves. And like mortals, there will always be some part of him that wishes to protect the objects of his affections. Apollo, however, is also an emissary of Fate. He knows that the fate of all mortal things is death. He knows that to love a mortal is to accept that eventually he will have to bury them. There is no illusion of forever, there is no fantasy where he fights against the nature of living things and shields his beloveds from death. Apollo loves and because of that love, he also accepts.
And that, while beautiful, is also tragic.
#ginger rambles#ginger chats about greek myths#greek mythology#apollo#Listen man#I think there's something extremely beautiful about Apollo's affairs#Yes I know that Ares also loves and cares for his daughters but this isn't about him#There's just something about the way that Apollo put his all into it every single time#To the point that even when he does know better he still fights because of the strength of his love#The Iliad to me will always be a love story#Yes Achilles' wrath is said to come from his overwhelming feelings towards Patroclus#but what Achilles does has nothing to do with grief or love#By the end of everything Achilles forsook that love which ought to have defined his actions based on what he was saying#and warped it into a weapon meant to satisfy the void left by his loss#Apollo though - I am always taken aback by the sheer weight of his love#towards not only Hektor but towards all of Troy in the Iliad#And how he is very careful to balance that love and all the ways he wishes he could fight against their inevitably end#with his duties as one who is both aware of the impending end and whose position in the war#has put him in opposition with his elders#That delicate balance between a love so powerful that he is willing to take on the full weight of Athena and Hera's wrath#and an understanding that the battle he fights is not for victory but simply because for love's sake#How could you not think of that as beautiful and awesome and so achingly tragic#I feel the same about both Asclepius' and Actaeon's deaths#Apollo loved BOTH of his sons - Asclepius and Aristaeus - so so SO much#He was so incredibly proud of them both and delighted immensely in the both of their victories and talents#And so when Asclepius dies and it is by his own father's hand - I have always found his act of wrath so fascinating#Honestly this could be its own separate post - but the fact that Apollo does not beg Zeus to reconsider or to bring Asclepius back#when Apollo has made cases for lenience on things like that before speaks of a level of understanding from Apollo that Asclepius was always#going to die because of his pushing of the boundary between life and death#so he doesn't bother trying to reason with Zeus or plea his grief - instead going directly to destroying something important to Zeus

stuck on the fact that a small part of Dongsik hoped for 20 entire years that Yuyeon was still alive. he fantasized about coming across her in random places and was anxious about recognizing her as a 40 year old woman because he genuinely still held onto a glimmer of hope for two decades. ten years and another ten years after than. half his life picturing his sister dead and alive turn by turn. maybe even when he burst the wall open he still thought there was a chance it would be empty.
and isn't it supremely fucked up that for the enormous, cataclysmic impact that Yuyeon's disappearance had on Dongsik and the central place that his love for her occupies in his motivations as a character, the only time they interact on-screen is when he finally finds her body and tenderly cradles her long-dead hands in his.

I'm decreeing that nobody is allowed to talk about weight loss or fat positivity or anything related to it unless you first clarify what you think "fat" means. If I have to go through one more conversation with someone who is "super pro-fat-acceptance! I'm fat and I love my body! Being fat can't cause health problems and I'm proof!" and then I find out that they're 15 pounds overweight I will not be held responsible for my actions
Although that is still better than the alternative, which is someone assuring me that weight loss isn't that hard, they got fat over the pandemic but they stopped eating fast food and started working out and they were back to their normal weight in a couple of months! Those doctors tried convincing them that they needed 'medicine' or 'surgery' but they did it all by themselves, and I can too if I just use a little willpower! And then you find out they were never more than 15 pounds overweight (and for SURE no doctor actually recommended weight loss surgery to them)

🍰 A bit about myself 🍓
To be honest with you all i was 220lbs back in 2019 and lost all of it by ⭐️ing myself all day (sometimes multiple days) and my lowest weight was 145 but im back up to 160 ever since i got into a relationship :( im trying to be back to at least 145 but my ultimate goal is 135 without gaining it back and hoping to maybe even try to go back to eating normally and healthy (slowly ofc so i dont gain it again 😶) after i lose it. I like to go to the gym and have also been trying to tone myself up a bit. When I’m not at the gym I’m usually watching tv, reading, sleeping, playing video games, or playing with my recent gsd puppy ❤️. Im looking to slim down some excess fat a little bit everywhere and hopefully maintain at least some of the muscle ive gotten over the past few months. It finally hit me how much weight I’ve gained back since my Lw once i hit 160 and decided i need to change. Doing it the right way never worked for me because no matter what i did i wouldn’t lose the weight quick enough and it was nearly impossible due to my past with 4na. Im hoping to be back to about 145 by the end of the year.
Stats:
Cw:160lb
Hw:220lb
Lw:145lb
Ugw:135lb
Ht:5’8
I hope to look into other peoples thoughts here, get inspiration, and possibly get some mutuals :) ❤️

Random ask, but you talk about your workouts and healthy eating a bit on here
Do you have any advice for someone just starting out trying to change their lifestyle to be a bit more healthy?
Healthy food wasn't really a thing for me growing up since fast food was cheaper to afford, and my job keeps me pretty much sitting down unmoving all day. So I feel like I'd be at square one here
Gradual habits moving toward a lifestyle change is the best advice I ever got. You can’t and should try to do it all at once. I started out just hitting the gym once a week and walking on the treadmill. Then it became twice a week over time. Then every other day….then I started lifting weights, so on, etc.
The trick is, you won’t start to crave and appreciate healthier foods (whole foods like vegetables, etc) until you start working them into your diet. So add in what you can, where you can, but don’t overdo it so you hate your food and think of it as a diet. I went high protein for my lifting, and dialed down the sugar and unhealthy foods slowly as time went on. I still eat them, though — for example, my meal prep this week was hamburger helper with blended veggies and chickpeas in the sauce.
Get in exercise where you can, when you can too. If you sit at a desk all day, going to the gym after work and scheduling exercise “time” can be useful. Some people prefer to walk intermittently throughout the day and get steps in that way — do what you can maintain and enjoy. I’m definitely a gym goer after work, but I like late night workouts.
The trick is to do just a little bit more every month, even if week to week things aren’t consistent. Eat to fuel your movement, and move in ways you enjoy. Don’t shame yourself, don’t compare yourself, and don’t stop even if you didn’t reach your goals that week.
I personally lost about forty pounds (closer to fifty now) very slowly, with lots of stops and starts. I get about an hour of movement every day and still eat things I enjoy very much. I’m slowly building even more muscle, but it takes time. Whenever I tried to rush or do too much, I failed.

man it really is cruel how dwarves are constantly sidelined and forgotten both by the chantry/surfacers and the games, even despite the relevance of blights, even though dwarves are the ones who lost more than any surface folk to the darkspawn, even though to this day they are very actively the most exposed to them, even though their existence and culture is intristically linked to the darkspawn; who are the supposed punishment of the sin of men! of humans!! whose whole race is deeply affected by their proximity to darkspawn. who are the ones relentlessly tasked with fighting back darkspawn out of necessity. and yet. barely acknowledged

Respondents can decide how much weight "counts" for the purposes of this poll.
Submitter is aware of statistics that the majority of people who attempt to lose weight do not succeed in the long term, and is interested to find out the contexts behind people's experiences with this. Clinical sources don't always provide a full picture, and mainstream sources tend to be very biased.
We ask your questions so you don’t have to! Submit your questions to have them posted anonymously as polls.

I hate how society is so fat phobic that people will question why someone with t2 diabetes needs a medication to control blood sugar more than their need to lose weight. Like maybe, just maybe, having an uncontrolled blood sugar of 300 is just a little more dangerous than you potentially having health problems years down the line. One is decidedly more dangerous.

do you have any advice for people looking to get into running but are extremely out of shape and overweight? like best ways you think to start slow without hurting yourself and build on it
Hi! Every time I get an ask from someone wanting to get into running it makes my day 100x better thank you sooo much for asking ❤️
I don't know what your definition of "extremely out of shape" is, but if you currently can't handle running for an extended period of time, work your way up with long walks, or walk + run intervals, until you can handle 30+ mins of continuous exercise. GET RUNNING SHOES FOR THAT ALSO. Your body will thank you.
My general beginner running tips post applies + I really recommend paying extra attention to joint care. Running is an extremely high-impact activity — you're slamming your entire weight on the ground 100+ times a minute, and the greater your weight the bigger the strain. I can't stress enough the importance of keeping your runs shorts at first and listening to your body (15 mins 3/4 x week is already a lot!) but generally, strengthening your lower body goes a long way towards healthy knee joints.
Strength: I've already recommended Jay Johnson's Strenght & Mobility routine, but if you're feeling fancy I'd also suggest working your way up to weighted squats, lunges, and romanian deadlifts (2-3 sets, 6-8 reps, using whatever you've got around the house that can serve as a weight). As I said in the og post, I can't recommend enough looking into core activation, which will help a lot if you have breasts that bounce when you run. Big boobs back pain is real.
Chafing prevention: this can be a bitch, unfortunately. Jiggly bits (inner thighs, skin folds, breasts) can chafe a lot, and if possible get leggings / shorts / bras with as few seams as possible and anti-glide gel — if you have declathon in your country, their anti-chafe cream is good and pretty cheap. If you have never heard of declathon, you're probably in the US and I know there are good brands over there also. (This part is unfortunately born out of anecdotal evidence, i.e. my dad, who went on a 10km jog and then couldn't walk for like a week. Chafing is the crotch killer)
Stretching! I'm a hypocrite and don't stretch nearly as much as I should, but don't be like me. Some stretching tips from sports physiologist / very Fast Guy Pete Pfitzinger under the cut.
Again I'm very flattered you asked me!! GOOD LUCK lmk how it goes <3
