If you think I'm pretty
Tumblr media
Pairing: Homelander x afab!reader CW: fingering, praise, slightly OOC homie, threats of captivity (he says hes gonna keep reader in the penthouse that's it I promise it's not genuine), cursing, sub!reader, porn without plot (I think this is applicable), they're in a relationship before this, reader says 'John' cause moaning homelander is funny as fuck Summary: Being a perfectionist, you're unsatisfied with a recent test score. Homelander has a cure for that. Disclaimer: reader is always thought to be chubby/fat but there are no physical descriptors here, just an FYI WC: 1,955 Genuinely idk I'd like to apologize for this. I fell out of my Criminal Minds hyperfixation like months ago and haven't written since so I'm really rusty. This is 100% a self-insert but reader is gn and not described other than the fact that they're AFAB. Also this was only proof read once so please point out typos if you see them <3
Your mother used to scold you for being too hard on yourself. Her face is virtually the only thing you can picture as your screen burns your eyes a bit. It’s too early for the high brightness of the device, having woken up before the sun could reintroduce your eyes to light. You’d set yourself up to wake slightly after midnight, intending to check the score of a huge test you’d taken months ago and simply go back to sleep in a matter of minutes. A rather stupid plan, in hindsight. You were questioning now if you knew yourself at all. Your phone had nearly been in your hand when you felt the cold burn of anxiety in your lungs. This test was a huge fucking deal. You were a hardcore perfectionist on top of that, trying with countless futile attempts to surrender your idea of the model score. You just needed to pass, not get your professor to memorialize you in marble for your pure genius. You’d gotten up instead of turning on your phone, brushing your teeth and making your bed before pacing the room slightly while you thought. Essentially, you were just allowing the mantra of ‘cope’ to bound back and forth between your ears for a couple minutes. You weren’t sure if you wanted to cope with the disappointment of a lesser score, or you were telling yourself to come down a couple pegs and be happy with getting by. The repetition of the word soothed that icy-hot feeling that had festered from your lungs to your fingertips, and you checked.
You were fine. Not the score you wanted, but you were fine.
Mentally you writhed against the slump of your shoulders, but the weight of this self-inflicted shortcoming hit harder than you were capable of defending yourself from. The long sigh you let out was all frost as the tension left your airways. How underwhelming. You laid down on the bed you’d made not ten minutes ago, hearing the window slide open a few seconds into your pity party. You normally left it unlocked for him, knowing if anyone else attempted to enter your home, he wasn’t far. He told you himself that he seemed to have tuned into you specifically; swearing he’d be able to hear you on the other side of the city if you needed him.
“It’s way too early for you to already be having a bad day. The sun’s not even up.” He was closer now, fully sealed into your space and approaching you with comfortable footsteps. You never fully got over the irony of seeing America’s greatest hero flying through your window in sweatpants. “What’s wrong?” You always noticed the subtle way he changed how he spoke around you. In every interview or interaction you’d ever witnessed of his, he’d spoken like a character. For a man who hated having his words scripted, he spoke the same as every cookie-cutter movie he’d starred in. He didn’t talk that way with you, something you hoped was subconscious. A demonstration of the safety he felt around you.
You shrugged in response to the question. You acknowledged the trivial nature of your feelings, knowing you probably reeked of sadness to him but attempting to downplay it anyways. “Bad test score.”
He sat down next to you on the edge of the bed, allowing you the space to remain sprawled out. “Doubtful.” He laughed slightly as he said it, shaking his head and smiling. He looked at you, his eyebrows furrowing minorly. “What’d you get?”
“A four.”
“What were you hoping to get?”
Your voice was barely audible as you spoke, knowing he would pick it up but also trying to spare yourself the rush of immaturity hearing yourself speak would bring. “A five.”
He sighed - a sigh full of endearment that his eyes reflected as he looked at you. You told him once that his eyes were the first thing youd noticed. It was sunny the day you’d met, and they looked practically ethereal. You’d seen such chaos reflected in them even from day one. The masses called him ‘soulless’ often, but you couldn’t understand such an accusation from anyone who had ever seen him. His eyes were practically overflowing with soul, every time you looked at him it was all you saw. They were capable of incredibly dangerous things but they were so entrancing. He was so fucking enticing.
You broke the eye contact, but he nudged your leg and moved his head to try and follow your eyes. “Hey-” He called for your attention, so you looked back at him. “You know that’s a good score, right?”
You smiled small at him. “No- I know. I’m just…I don’t know- strict with myself.” You found it hard to put into words. You knew you’d done well, but the ability to feel pride felt withheld from you. Like your eyes bore into it but your mind refused to distribute the feeling it brought to something tangible.
“I think you’re just too much of a fucking perfectionist.” His hand was splayed across your upper thigh from where he sat. No matter which part of you he touched, he had a grip that made your head spin. He was so sure of himself, the strength demonstrated from such an unassuming form never lost the novelty that it’d held when you met him. “Can’t let yourself admit when you did good.”
You tried to be dismissive, but it was hard to fake anything with a man like him. “As if you aren’t, John.” His jaw got the slightest bit tighter at the use of his name. Such a miniscule action that easily dodges the eyes of people who aren’t looking. You couldn’t really imagine not looking at him.
“I’m serious.” His face was still relaxed, but the expression in his eyes had shifted. His pupils dilated and his full attention was on you. “You did good.”
The only con of being with somebody with abilities such as his was the lack of secrecy. You used to laugh with your friends about how grateful you were for the discrete nature of arousal when living without certain body parts. That went out the window when you started seeing him. He knew the second anything shifted within you. He had every perversion you’d ever dreamt about practically categorized by the time your two month anniversary had rolled around. One of his favorite pastimes was casually working a turn-on into conversation and just watching you squirm.
You fought the urge to pull away from his hand, feeling your stomach drop slightly at a declaration like that. “Thank you.” You looked away from him again. Something you knew he didn’t really like but choosing to try and save face over anything else.
“Yeah…I don’t know.” You could see his focus on the topic increasing by the second. His disposition was happy, but he held serious and almost threatening undertones. He tightened his grip on your thigh and you looked at back to him, hesitantly following the silent command to keep your eyes up. “I think you should say it.”
“John-” His assertiveness was starting to get to you, it always did. You sat up on your forearms to be a little more level with him but he moved his hand from your thigh to your stomach and pushed you back down. The thought of having to lay there and explicitly state that you did well on your test felt like a kid having to write in repetition on a chalkboard in detention.
He was looking down at you, the eye contact making you slightly dizzy. His face was kind, it almost always was when he was around you, but the conversation was derailing. “I just think it’s important that you understand this.” He was so good at making you want what he thought was best.
You inhaled, swallowing your pride and licking your lips. “What do you want me to say?”
That familiar, condescending smile was starting to creep onto his lips. “Just tell the truth.” His eyebrows raised slightly in a silent prompt. “Say you did good.”
His hand was descending from your stomach, making it’s way to the hemline of your underwear. You hadn’t bothered to change out of what you were sleeping in, only now realizing the vulnerability of it. You held your tongue for a moment, breathing out a quiet “I did good.”
He tore the only fabric between his hand and you off your body as easily as ripping a sheet of paper and leaned in a little more. “Say it again.”
“John-” You said it as barely an exhale as he skimmed his hand over you. You hadn’t even registered just how sensitive or how wet you’d gotten in the few minutes you were talking to him.
“I don’t know why you act so fucking noble. You should be running Ashleys around in circles or giving interns your coffee order. Not any of this testing bullshit that you’re too good for anyway.” His tone elevated to that mocking, cocky tone that swept into the most shame filled crevices of your mind and tugged the most deprived parts into the driver seat. He thumbed at your clit while he spoke, increasing and decreasing the pressure whenever he felt like it and effectively snatching any remaining ability to form coherent thought from your grabbing hands. “You’ve been chosen by a God, honey. You can do anything, I can give you anything.” He got breathier as he spoke, seemingly soaking up the desperation you were excreting and matching it in a tenfold.
You felt two of his fingers enter you effortlessly and you couldn’t stop yourself from gripping his arm. You always felt the power imbalance most in times like these. A feeling like pulling an angel away from heaven just for yourself, combing through it’s wings with your fingers or trying to lap up a fraction of that status in a wildly inappropriate disregard for the natural roles of nature. He was so much more than you, but he just wanted you to feel good. You swore under your breath as he started circles on your clit. He never got hand cramps, never got tired. He would go until you couldn’t anymore.
“That’s it.” He had barely said it, more just exhaled the assurance under his breath. You were close, you’re sure he could feel it. “Gonna move you to my penthouse. Keep you braindead and needy.”
It shouldn’t have hit you the way it did. Considering who he was, he could easily fulfill that promise with nobody at Vought even thinking twice. It was the way he said it, the way he acts. Always needing control and always right. The most powerful man alive spent his time fantasizing about control over you, and your stomach twisted in disgust at how badly it got you off.
He slowed his movements as your high declined. He was breathing heavy, but your heart was beating like a drum. He had the smallest smile on his face like the sound gave him a sense of satisfaction. You rose to your forearms, this time with no protest from him, and watched him stand up. He held the back of your head with the hand that wasn’t nearly dripping and kissed the top of your head. It was chaste and quick, but the domesticity of it made your throat ache. He uttered something about getting a towel to clean up, stating he’d be right back before exiting the room.
You rushed the words out before he could leave. “But you didn’t-”
“Next time.” He just waved you off. “I just thought you deserved a little reward.”

Favorite Firefox Extensions
Firefox is a very extensible browser - through a combinations of addons and userscripts you can make it behave just about any way you want. The best part is, they're all free. Here are some of my favorites.
Note: if you have an Android device, check out my post about Firefox for Android's new extended support for addons!
Note: if you have an Apple device, check out my favorite Safari extensions here!
Last updated June 2024 (fixed link for Bypass Paywalls Clean).
Index:
uBlock Origin
Tab Session Manager
Sauron
Bypass Paywalls Clean
Auto Tab Discard
Video DownloadHelper
Highlight or Hide Search Engine Results
TWP - Translate Web Pages
UnTrap - YouTube Customizer
Indie Wiki Buddy
Cookie Auto Delete
ShopSuey - Get Rid of Ads on Amazon and Ebay
LibraryExtension
uBlock Origin
(compatible with Firefox for Android)
This is the first addon I install on any new Firefox browser. It's an adblocker, but at its core it can remove pretty much any HTML element from a website, and it comes with pre-configured lists for removing everything from ads to cookie banners to those annoying popups that ask you to sign up for email newsletters.
Tab Session Manager
Have you ever accidentally lost all your open browser tabs due to a computer update, or even just accidentally closing Firefox? With this addon you no longer have to worry about that - it automatically saves your open tabs and windows every time the browser closes, and autosaves a restore point of tabs every few minutes in case the browser crashes unexpectedly. Opening all your previous tabs and windows is a one-click deal.
Sauron
Ever wished your favorite website had a dark mode? With Sauron, now it can! Sauron attempts to intelligently figure out how to edit the color scheme of the web page (including text) to make it dark-mode friendly. It preserves the original color of images, but dims them so that they don't blind you. You can disable image dimming or dark mode on a site by site basis too. It's not perfect since it is making guesses about which colors to change, but it goes a long way toward making the internet an enjoyable place for me.
Bypass Paywalls Clean
This addon removes paywalls from hundreds of news websites around the world or adds links to open the article in a wrapper that provides the article text (like the Internet Archive etc.)
Auto Tab Discard
Ever wanted to keep a tab open for later use, but you notice the browser getting slower and slower the more tabs you have open? Auto Tab Discard will automatically "hibernate" tabs that you haven't used in a while so that they use less resources on your computer. It's smart enough not to hibernate pages that are playing media (like YouTube) or that have forms you haven't submitted yet (like job applications). You can customize how fast it puts tabs to sleep too and exclude certain websites from hibernating at all.
Video DownloadHelper
This addon can download streaming videos from most modern (HTML5) websites, and even finds soft subtitles that accompany the stream and downloads those too. Just browse to the webpage that has the video on it, click the icon in the Firefox toolbar, and select the video you want to download and click "Quick Download". For YouTube I would recommend using a YT downloader website (like KeepVid) to download the video directly, but Video DownloadHelper really shines for websites that aren't popular enough to have dedicated downloader websites like that. I've used it download videos from a Japanese film festival streaming portal, news websites, etc.
Highlight or Hide Search Engine Results
This addon allows you to blacklist websites and completely remove them from Google, Bing, or DuckDuckGo search results. Don't want to see image search results from AI websites? Blacklist them. Searching for tech support advice and getting frustrated by all the auto-generated junk websites that stuff themselves full of SEO terms to jump to the top of the search results without actually providing any information at all? Blacklist them so they don't come up in your next search. Conversely, you can also whitelist websites that you know and trust so that if they ever come up in future search results, they'll be highlighted with a color of your choosing for visibility.
TWP - Translate Web Pages
(compatible with Firefox for Android)
Does what it says on the tin: auto-detects a website's language and provides a button that can translate it to a language of your choosing. You can also just select individual text on the page and translate just that. Note that this sends whatever text you translate to the servers of your selected translation service (Google, Bing, Yandex, or DeepL), so keep in mind the privacy implications if you don't want your IP address associated with having read that text.
Edit: As of version 118, Firefox now has the ability to translate text locally on your computer, without needing to send it to a cloud service. You can enable this in Settings -> Translation -> Install languages for offline translation. Note that at this time (May 2024), 18 (mostly European) languages are supported. More info here.
UnTrap for YouTube
(compatible with Firefox for Android and they have a Safari for iOS extension too)
This addon lets you tweak the YouTube interface and hide anything you don't want to see. For instance, I hide all the "recommended" videos that come up when you search YT now. They have nothing to do with your search, so they're essentially just ads YT puts in your search results. I also hide Explore, Trending, More from YouTube, and Shorts sections, but you can customize it to fit your preferences.
Note: depending on the particular set of tweaks you want to make to YouTube, you may prefer to use YouTube Search Fixer instead. User preference.
Indie Wiki Buddy
I loathe Fandom.com wiki sites - they are cluttered and filled with ads and autoplaying videos that follow you down the page as you scroll. The organization is also hostile - if a community tries to leave their platform and bring their content to a new wiki hoster, Fandom bans them from the platform and reverts all their deletions/changes. Indie Wiki Buddy attempts to find an independent alternative for the wiki you're trying to browse and automatically redirects you to it, and if one doesn't exist, it will redirect you to a proxy site like antifandom or breezewiki that shows the Fandom content but removes all ads/videos/background images so you can actually, you know. READ it.
Cookie Auto Delete
(compatible with Firefox for Android)
Websites store "cookies" - little text files with info about you - on your computer as you browse so they can track you as you browse the internet. This addon automatically deletes cookies from a website a short while after you close the last tab you had open for that site. You can customize how long it waits before clearing cookies too. Note that this can sign you out of many websites, so you can whitelist any site you don't want cookies cleared for.
ShopSuey - Get Rid of Ads on Amazon and Ebay
Removes the ads/recommended products that clutter up Amazon and Ebay search results and product pages.
LibraryExtension
This fantastic addon recognizes when you are viewing a book on many popular websites and can automatically check whether that book is available in any of the library systems or subscription services you have access to, including how many copies your library(ies) have and how many are currently checked out. The best part is it shows the availability for physical books, ebooks, AND audiobooks at supported libraries. The extension currently supports libraries in Australia, Canada, Germany, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and the United States, but it also supports some global repositories like the Internet Archive and subscription services like NLS Bard for the blind and print disabled, Kobo Plus, Libro.fm, Anyplay.fm, Bookmate, and Everand. Great extension for people trying to support their local library and also save money.
Filtering+ for Tumblr
This addon lets you add tags or phrases to your tumblr tag filters with two clicks, without leaving the dashboard. I've been asking Tumblr for this tag filtering behavior on their mobile apps (i.e. press and hold a tag to get a filter option) for at least a year now in asks and surveys, without ever stopping to see if someone had already implemented this on desktop. More fool me. This addon is from the author of XKit Rewritten. Note that the right-click tag filtering only works on the dashboard; it will not appear if you are on someone's blog. Right-clicking selected text to filter the phrase works everywhere based on my testing.

Unorthodox Methods I've Used to Combat Programming
Try dismantling things in the headspace that perpetuate programming. Eg: for us, programs show up in the inner world in many different ways, ranging from machines, to objects on one's person that are out of place and cause negative effects, as Blaine (a gatekeeper) had when he realized one of his accessories ( an ascot with a metal brooch) was causing a scramble program by emitting a signal from it. We can temporarily affect programs by affecting these physical manifestations, taking off the accessory in the previous example, and placing it into a locking container with shielding for radio signals, was able to turn off that program, until and unless a reactivator part brings it back, or uses a different method to turn on the same program, such as activating a backup machine that also triggers that program's function. You may have to fight the same program several times, until you can find and get through to whoever reactivates that program, if applicable.
Use tools. If you've got any control over your inner world, try adding in tools for yourself to use to combat programs and their physical effects or manifestations within the headspace. A lot of our programming involved disrupting communication between alters. So we brought in the idea of communicators, like in Star Trek, and later, Focuses from HZD, as long distance ways to talk to anyone on the network. We give new alters their own device when they become known, and this allows them to speak to each other and even send information across distances in the headspace that used to be impassable (from layer to layer, across sidesystems, etc). We can even write software for them that serves additional functions as needed, so it can be used as AAC, or to find active programming structures through the heads up display. We've also added vehicles in the form of miniature starships that can navigate the large area more easily, and a much larger ship that can make changes to the inner world on large scales like moving layers with its tractor beam.
Try moving people around. When alters are stuck in terrible situations in the headspace, it makes things bad all around. If you can rescue them, and move them to a safe, supervised area with any kind of help they may need based on the state they're in (medical, emotional, Etc), you may be able to get them feeling safer pretty quickly. You may have to do this more than once, I've had parts spontaneously move back before, but keep up with it.
Remember that a headspace is not a fixed entity. It can be molded to you as you grow and change, just as it was molded when you were programmed. Even as it is, the way it's designed was how you interpreted the commands given and visuals shown when it was created, and much of it may be your own design shining through. Just as you made it back then, you have the power to change it now. If you can't yet, keep trying! It's a visualization tool, and it is yours. No one else has jurisdiction over what it looks like or has in it but you. But keep in mind, too big of changes at once, especially if you're not ready for what they represent, won't stick. We've had many that wouldn't, because we hadn't done the work first. Getting rid of program structures you haven't deactivated and processed the trauma of, for example, doesn't work in our experience. But once they're inactive and you remember the programming, why you believed it, and understand, fully, why it was unequivocally fucked up that you were taught that, and the alters affected believe they deserve a life outiside of that job, then it's a lot more possible. You can make your headspace a safe place, one piece at a time.
Just sit with them. Some (for us, most) programmed parts may have little awareness of the small pleasantries of life. This makes giving in to what the programming is telling them very likely, as they have no experience of the alternative. This applies doubly so to programmed persecutors and any alter who's still loyal to the abusers, especially beta programmed parts in our experience. Showing them what is normal and good and pleasant is always a good thing. Let them see what being a person is supposed to be like. Show them what it's like to have agency, let them choose little things at first, then bigger ones. Most of all, let them choose what to do with the body when they're in front. Wear what they want to wear, hide if they want to hide, etc. This is important to them realizing that they should have been able to say no all that time.
Hope this helps someone out there. Feel free to ask questions if you want.

DISCORD TIMESTAMPS TUTORIAL
discord has a feature that allows you to use universal timestamps in any channel in any server, and even in dms!
the main benefit for roleplayers and roleplay admins is that this simple bit of code will show people any given time in their timezone and preferred format, according to how their device/application is configured. this eliminates the need for messy timezone conversions when posting about upcoming events, opening dates, etc. (no more 4PM EST / 9 PM GMT / 6AM JST (oh wait, but now we've crossed midnight so what day is that?)... it gets confusing really fast, daylight savings can throw the whole thing off, and furthermore the date "5th march" might be shown in different formats depending on where you are in the world. is 5/3 in may or march to you? see... time is chaos)
this little bit of code allows you to bypass all that and just show people the time and date in the way that they want to see it to avoid confusion - you can even use it to do live countdowns!
under the cut you'll find a full tutorial and explanation. don't worry it's not complicated, it's only two steps long - you don't need to be good at coding or anything!
Tumblr media
discord uses UNIX TIMESTAMPS. unix is a form of universal time, presented as a 10 digit number - i won't get too nerdy about it here, but essentially it is the number of seconds that have passed since january 1st, 1970, 00:00 (UTC).
sidenote if you've ever wondered why excel timestamp codes change before and after this date, this is why! again, i'm just nerding out here but it's a fun little tidbit i think.
SO... how do you use it?
STEP ONE
first of all you need to get your 10 digit number. you can just google "unix timestamp generator" for this but i will recommend THIS ONE HERE. (thank you to our lord and savior dans tools)
you'll be presented with a page that looks like this - all you need to do is change the date and time to whatever you want. if you're using this to set the time of an event, make sure you set this time to whenever you want your event to start IN YOUR OWN TIMEZONE. this tool automatically updates based on your machine's local time, so this is important. it also makes it super easy, absolutely no time conversions required from you.
so now copy that 10 digit number, that's your unix timestamp. you've done the hardest part.
Tumblr media
STEP TWO
now all you need to do is put this into discord. below you'll find a table of outputs. all you need to do is pick how you want your timestamp to appear and use that code (the input column) with the 10 digit number you just generated
Tumblr media
here's an example of how it looks (this is using the Long date/time function)
Tumblr media
note: whether it comes out as 12 hour or 24 hour depends on how you have your computer/phone configured. it uses your local settings so no need to worry about date order confusion or anything like that!
i hope this is clear for everyone - if it helps please give it a reblog as that helps me out a lot and feel free to come to my inbox with any questions.

Ways you can help get Shadow and Bone S3 + Six Of Crows Spinoff
Stream Shadow and Bone S2 on Netflix:
this is the most obvious and yet time consuming way that you can help. it is rumored that Netflix values completion rate, hours watched, rewatch rate, and number of new viewers. This means it would be best if you could get friends and family who might not have seen the show before to watch it all the way through.
If that isn't possible, the next best thing we can do is stream! This means to watch the second season all the way through, start to finish. You don't have to physically be watching of course, you can have it playing on a device in the background as you work, clean, cook, ect.
Ideally, the volume on your device should be more than half. You can use headphones if you don't want to hear the sound, or place it in a different room. Just remember to check up on the device every 2-3 hours to make sure it is still playing the show.
From my experience, Netflix will stop the season at the beginning of episode 4 if you haven't been jiggling the mouse or adjusting the volume, brightness, ect. So, I just change the subtitles or brightness every now and then to make sure Netflix believe I am actively watching the show.
How to stream on PC/computer:
Go to Netflix.com (you can use the Netflix app but you won't be able to mute the tab if you do it that way)
Choose Shadow and Bone S2 Ep 1 and let your device play through it. You want the sound on the Netflix tab itself to be higher than 50%.
Tumblr media
Now that you have it playing, you can mute the tab on your device (I use Google Chrome but, I'm sure other browsers allow you to mute as well!)
To mute the tab:
right-click the tab, and then you will see "mute site". go ahead and click on that.
Tumblr media
Tablet/Phone:
Go to the Netflix App
Click on Shadow and Bone season 2 and start from episode 1 at the beginning.
Because there is no way to mute the tab, just use headphones or put the device somewhere if the sound bothers you.
You might also want to keep your device connected to a charger as it can drain the battery a little.
please continue to stream shadow and bone! and start if you haven't already.
TV:
Go to Netflix on your remote/application
Play Shadow and Bone s2 all the way through
This is best if you are cooking or something where you can hear the show from the other room and can click "continue watching" when need be.
Other ways to help:
Say you are unable to stream, that's ok! There are other ways you can help Netflix know that we want Shadow and Bone renewed for a third season and a Six Of Crows Spin Off.
Use hashtags! Rumor has it that Netflix cares most about Twitter, so please use that platform the most if you can. (I know that is a tall ask haha) Here are some super important ones:
#Shadow and Bone
#Six Of Crows Spin Off
#SOC Spin Off
Talk about it on Social Media:
Whatever platform you use, please share Shadow and Bone content, like, comment, put the posts on your stories, make edits, talk about the plot, what you liked, what you didn't, just talk about the show!
Join the watchparty:
This is more like a blend of the two ways to help. Kanej Breakdown on Twitter hosted a watch party on April 1st and 2nd and it went super well! The idea was we all watch using a Google Chrome Extension called Teleparty (you can also just watch the episodes listed for that day at that time if you don't have PC/ Google Chrome) and tweet using the hashtags listed above. This allows so many tweets to be sent under those hashtags, and gets it trending. They are hosting another watchparty today as well as this weekend.
Tumblr media
We want to stay as high as possible to finish out these 28 days (important for Netflix's renewal system) so, please, please if you are able STREAM!!

Understanding Circuit Board Electronic Components: A Comprehensive Guide
In today's digital world, electronic devices have become an essential part of our daily lives. But what makes these devices tick? At the heart of every electronic device lies a circuit board—a masterpiece of tiny electronic components working together to perform complex tasks. In this article, we’ll dive deep into the fascinating world of circuit board electronic components, exploring each element’s role and how they contribute to the overall functionality of the device.
What is a Circuit Board?
A circuit board, often referred to as a PCB (Printed Circuit Board), is a flat board used to mechanically support and electrically connect various electronic components. These components work in unison to perform a specific task. Think of the circuit board as the skeleton and nervous system of an electronic device—it holds everything together and allows communication between parts.
Types of Circuit Boards
Single-sided PCB: Has one layer of conducting material.
Double-sided PCB: Contains two layers for components and connections.
Multi-layer PCB: Complex boards with multiple layers for advanced applications.
The Role of Electronic Components on a Circuit Board
Every electronic device you interact with is powered by a carefully designed circuit board filled with various components. These components might be tiny, but each one has a critical role in the operation of the device. Here's a breakdown of the most important electronic components you’ll find on a typical circuit board.
1. Resistors
Resistors are fundamental components that control the flow of electrical current. They resist the flow of electrons, hence the name "resistor." Their primary function is to reduce current flow, adjust signal levels, and divide voltages in a circuit. Without resistors, circuits would allow too much current to flow, potentially damaging other components.
Types of Resistors
Fixed resistors: Have a set resistance value.
Variable resistors: Allow adjustment of the resistance.
2. Capacitors
Capacitors store and release electrical energy in a circuit. They are often compared to small rechargeable batteries that quickly charge and discharge. Capacitors help smooth out fluctuations in voltage, filter noise, and store energy for future use.
Common Uses of Capacitors
Energy storage
Signal filtering
Voltage stabilization
3. Inductors
Inductors are components that store energy in a magnetic field when electrical current flows through them. They resist changes in current and are typically used in circuits to filter signals, manage power, and store energy.
Applications of Inductors
Power supplies
Radio frequency circuits
Noise suppression in circuits
4. Diodes
A diode is like a one-way valve for electricity, allowing current to flow in only one direction. They are vital in circuits to prevent reverse currents, which can damage components.
Types of Diodes
Light-emitting diodes (LEDs): Produce light when current flows through.
Zener diodes: Regulate voltage within a circuit.
5. Transistors
The transistor is a versatile component used to amplify or switch electronic signals. In essence, transistors are like tiny switches that turn signals on and off rapidly, making them essential in modern electronics.
Types of Transistors
NPN transistors: Allow current flow when a small voltage is applied to the base.
PNP transistors: Conduct when the base is negatively charged.
How Circuit Board Components Work Together
In a circuit, each component has a specific role, and together they form a cohesive system. For example:
Capacitors and resistors may work together to filter signals or smooth out voltage fluctuations.
Transistors and diodes ensure that signals are amplified or directed properly.
Integrated circuits handle the complex tasks, processing data, and controlling the overall system.
Choosing the Right Components for Your Circuit Board
When designing or repairing a circuit board, choosing the correct components is crucial. Some factors to consider include:
Voltage requirements
Power consumption
Signal type and frequency
Physical size and compatibility
Conclusion
Circuit boards are an integral part of any electronic device. The various components on the board each play a specific role in ensuring the device functions as intended. Understanding these components, from resistors to integrated circuits, is essential for anyone working with electronics, whether you're designing a new system or troubleshooting an existing one.

"You’ve always been a bit of a daydreamer, and oft forgotten as the middle child of such a big family. You’ve never been quite sure what to do with your life so you decide to put off deciding by going into massive debt and furthering your schooling! And then furthering it some more, and well now what? Guess you’ll spend the rest of your days working a nine to seven to pay off all that schooling."
-Sundae's always had her head in the clouds a bit, she loves music and picture books, and generally being creative. She was also hecking smart though, she graduated high school a whole year ahead of schedule and unsure what else to do with her life she decided to get a head start on college.
-At the time her older sister Juno had also being living on her own for college so after a lot of pleading and a bunch of agreed upon rules, Sundae was allowed to move in with her sister so she could go to college too. At first Sundae really loved this, she liked the freedom of being away from home and away from most her siblings, even Juno left her to her own devices most the time.
-Her only really friend she had during this was her old middle school pal Maia. The two have been close-knit forever, and since Maia was a grade ahead of her anyways it left the two open to spend more one on one time together. Such as karako-ing or exploring the library.
-Despite her love of varying arts, Art College didn't really work out, it was a lot more competitive and mentally draining then it had any right to be. Upon graduating and realizing she absolutely did not want to waste her passions on turning them into careers she turned right back around and picked a more applicable degree program. She went for Business.
-Maia supported her through all of her second round of schooling, to the point where she was practically living at Sundae's place (once she had her own place instead of rooming with Juno). With the amount of time the spent together and Sundae now trying to get out there and start dating it didn't take long for the two to stumble into a little bit more than just being friends.
-Sundae actually has really bad taste in men, every man she's ever had a crush on was wildly uninterested in her, kinda shitty, or just flat out unattractive. She turned to Maia for some comfort, and after a night together goofing off and playing video games and accidentally making out, the two came out of it with a new understanding of one another. Sundae slowly pieced together that she's actually a lesbian(based off an in-game glitch where after an update the sims changed her setting so she was no longer into men anymore lol)
-During this time Sundae also got really into crafting her own jewelry and gifting it to people she cared about, so maybe gifting a ring to Maia after like one official date was a bad decision. Even though it majorly freaked Maia out thinking the relationship was moving way too fast the two worked it out.
-The two STILL aren't married actually, despite their partnership being very stable life just keeps getting in the way of having a wedding. They might just elope actually.
-The two also had a science baby and wound up with twins, woops! Which is stressful because Sundae's job keeps her busy, so a lot of the infant care gets left to Maia during the day.

In today’s digital world, injustice lurks in the shadows of the Facebook post that’s delivered to certain groups of people at the exclusion of others, the hidden algorithm used to profile candidates during job interviews, and the risk-assessment algorithms used for criminal sentencing and welfare fraud detention. As algorithmic systems are integrated into every aspect of society, regulatory mechanisms struggle to keep up.
Over the past decade, researchers and journalists have found ways to unveil and scrutinize these discriminatory systems, developing their own data collection tools. As the internet has moved from browsers to mobile apps, however, this crucial transparency is quickly disappearing.
Third-party analysis of digital systems has largely been made possible by two seemingly banal tools that are commonly used to inspect what’s happening on a webpage: browser add-ons and browser developer tools.
Browser add-ons are small programs that can be installed directly onto a web browser, allowing users to augment how they interact with a given website. While add-ons are commonly used to operate tools like password managers and ad-blockers, they are also incredibly useful for enabling people to collect their own data within a tech platform’s walled garden.
Similarly, browser developer tools were made to allow web developers to test and debug their websites’ user interfaces. As the internet evolved and websites became more complex, these tools evolved too, adding features like the ability to inspect and change source code, monitor network activity, and even detect when a website is accessing your location or microphone. These are powerful mechanisms for investigating how companies track, profile, and target their users.
I have put these tools to use as a data journalist to show how a marketing company logged users’ personal data even before they clicked “submit” on a form and, more recently, how the Meta Pixel tool (formerly the Facebook Pixel tool) tracks users without their explicit knowledge in sensitive places such as hospital websites, federal student loan applications, and the websites of tax-filing tools.
In addition to exposing surveillance, browser inspection tools provide a powerful way to crowdsource data to study discrimination, the spread of misinformation, and other types of harms tech companies cause or facilitate. But in spite of these tools’ powerful capabilities, their reach is limited. In 2023, Kepios reported that 92 percent of global users accessed the internet through their smartphones, whereas only 65 percent of global users did so using a desktop or laptop computer.
Though the vast majority of internet traffic has moved to smartphones, we don’t have tools for the smartphone ecosystem that afford the same level of “inspectability” as browser add-ons and developer tools. This is because web browsers are implicitly transparent, while mobile phone operating systems are not.
If you want to view a website in your web browser, the server has to send you the source code. Mobile apps, on the other hand, are compiled, executable files that you usually download from places such as Apple’s iOS App Store or Google Play. App developers don’t need to publish the source code for people to use them.
Similarly, monitoring network traffic on web browsers is trivial. This technique is often more useful than inspecting source code to see what data a company is collecting on users. Want to know which companies a website shares your data with? You’ll want to monitor the network traffic, not inspect the source code. On smartphones, network monitoring is possible, but it usually requires the installation of root certificates that make users’ devices less secure and more vulnerable to man-in-the-middle attacks from bad actors. And these are just some of the differences that make collecting data securely from smartphones much harder than from browsers.
The need for independent collection is more pressing than ever. Previously, company-provided tools such as the Twitter API and Facebook’s CrowdTangle, a tool for monitoring what’s trending on Facebook, were the infrastructure that powered a large portion of research and reporting on social media. However, as these tools become less useful and accessible, new methods of independent data collection are needed to understand what these companies are doing and how people are using their platforms.
To meaningfully report on the impact digital systems have on society, we need to be able to observe what’s taking place on our devices without asking a company for permission. As someone who has spent the past decade building tools that crowdsource data to expose algorithmic harms, I believe the public should have the ability to peek under the hood of their mobile apps and smart devices, just as they can on their browsers. And it’s not just me: The Integrity Institute, a nonprofit working to protect the social internet, recently released a report that lays bare the importance of transparency as a lever to achieve public interest goals like accountability, collaboration, understanding, and trust.
To demand transparency from tech platforms, we need a platform-independent transparency framework, something that I like to call an inspectability API. Such a framework would empower even the most vulnerable populations to capture evidence of harm from their devices while minimizing the risk of their data being used in research or reporting without their consent.
An application programming interface (API) is a way for companies to make their services or data available to other developers. For example, if you’re building a mobile app and want to use the phone’s camera for a specific feature, you would use the iOS or Android Camera API. Another common example is an accessibility API, which allows developers to make their applications accessible to people with disabilities by making the user interface legible to screen readers and other accessibility tools commonly found on modern smartphones and computers. An inspectability API would allow individuals to export data from the apps they use every day and share it with researchers, journalists, and advocates in their communities. Companies could be required to implement this API to adhere to transparency best practices, much as they are required to implement accessibility features to make their apps and websites usable for people with disabilities.
In the US, residents of some states can request the data companies collect on them, thanks to state-level privacy laws. While these laws are well-intentioned, the data that companies share to comply with them is usually structured in a way that obfuscates crucial details that would expose harm. For example, Facebook has a fairly granular data export service that allows individuals to see, amongst other things, their “Off-Facebook activity.” However, as the Markup found during a series of investigations into the use of Pixel, even though Facebook told users which websites were sharing data, it did not reveal just how invasive the information being shared was. Doctor appointments, tax filing information, and student loan information were just some of the things that were being sent to Facebook. An inspectability API would make it easy for people to monitor their devices and see how the apps they use track them in real time.
Some promising work is already being done: Apple’s introduction of the App Privacy Report in iOS 15 marked the first time iPhone users could see detailed privacy information to understand each app’s data collection practices and even answer questions such as, “Is Instagram listening to my microphone?”
But we cannot rely on companies to do this at their discretion—we need a clear framework to define what sort of data should be inspectable and exportable by users, and we need regulation that penalizes companies for not implementing it. Such a framework would not only empower users to expose harms, but also ensure that their privacy is not violated. Individuals could choose what data to share, when, and with whom.
An inspectability API will empower individuals to fight for their rights by sharing the evidence of harm they have been exposed to with people who can raise public awareness and advocate for change. It would enable organizations such as Princeton’s Digital Witness Lab, which I cofounded and lead, to conduct data-driven investigations by collaborating closely with vulnerable communities, instead of relying on tech companies for access. This framework would allow researchers and others to conduct this work in a way that is safe, precise, and, most importantly, prioritizes the consent of the people being harmed.

A new cartridge game design
So, old cartridge games actually allowed for memory and size expansions, along with different upgrades that it could give the hardware itself.
Like a built in graphics card.
These days; cartridges are little more than glorified SD-Cards or USB Flash Drives.
The reason is that it's more expensive to include these kinds of hardware upgrades. And it's harder to develop for when your custom hardware is something you're shipping with your game product.
It also makes it harder to cross-platform.
For the longest time, consoles included expansion slots that rarely went used. Like the N64 expansion Bay, which increased the systems memory but was only needed for four games, and one of those games was only because there was a memory leak the devs couldn't figure out how to fix.
What can we use cartridges for though... It's literally one of the fastest storage types, and even though there's nothing that really sets it apart from standard media, there must be something we can use them for ... Right?
Re-Introducing; read-only memory.
When you load software or media from a source, harddrive, or disc, or card... It goes to RAM. This is because RAM is faster, but more "volatile". Meaning it can be overwritten.
Why not skip that step entirely?
A cartridge already has the benefit of ordered data storage, doesn't need to be loaded into RAM, and this frees up RAM and processing time for generated data instead of re-loading ROM data.
Annihilating load times nearly completely because the data is *already loaded*.
The reason for this is because ROM storage used to be cheap and slow, while RAM was fast but expensive and quicker to degrade with reuse.
But now the types of memory used for RAM has become cheap, and ubiquitous, and by using it for ROM applications, becomes cheaper and longer lasting than typical storage devices.
And it keeps its speed boost over traditional storage devices.
By using a design that changes how we think of traditional RAM and ROM applications, we can decrease load times, because it doesn't need to be loaded into RAM, AND save device RAM for on-the-fly content.
The drawback is, of course; customers will still want downloadable games and content.. And because the downloads won't have the same capacity as your purchasable carts, because they require loading into RAM, it will introduce stress on the hardware itself.
Re-Introducing; Data Storage Cards.
Whether or not you use proprietary carts, or SD-brand brand cards, or USB devices or whatever... You can use these cards *in the same way* as your console branded cards.
The difference is that you can also download to these cards. Or rather, the data stored in them can be read from as quickly as it does from your system's memory.
The downside is of course faster degradation, but you're going to have that with these storage devices anyway.

The Revolutionary Concept of Smart Ink Screens
Smart Ink technology, also known as E Ink, is transforming how we interact with our devices. Unlike traditional LCD or OLED screens, E Ink screens consume less power, are easily readable in sunlight, and provide a paper-like reading experience. This makes them ideal for a multitude of applications, including phone cases.
Why DIY?
Why settle for a mundane phone case when you can craft something extraordinary? A DIY Smart Ink Screen phone case not only adds a touch of personal flair but also serves as a functional extension of your device. Whether you want to display notifications, a to-do list, or your favorite artwork, the possibilities are endless.
What You Need
Creating your own Smart Ink Screen phone case is simpler than you might think. Here’s what you’ll need:
1. A Smart Ink Display Module: Choose a screen size that fits your phone model.
2. Microcontroller: To control the display and connect it to your phone.
3. Power Source: A small, rechargeable battery pack.
4. Phone Case: Preferably one that’s easy to modify.
5. Tools: Screwdrivers, soldering iron, and adhesive.
Step-by-Step Guide
Choose the Right Smart Ink Screen
Start by selecting a Smart Ink display module that is compatible with your phone’s dimensions. Look for one with good resolution and contrast.
2. Prepare the Phone Case
Carefully measure and cut out a section of the phone case where the Smart Ink screen will be placed. Ensure the cut-out is precise to avoid any gaps or misalignment.
3. Assemble the Components
Solder the microcontroller to the Smart Ink screen following the manufacturer’s instructions. Connect the power source to the microcontroller. Test the setup by loading some basic images or text to ensure everything works correctly.
4. Secure the Screen
Attach the Smart Ink screen to the phone case using a strong adhesive. Make sure it is firmly in place but not so tight that it risks damage.
5. Final Integration
Place the assembled components into the phone case. Tuck the wires neatly to avoid any obstruction or bulkiness. Double-check all connections and the screen’s visibility.
6. Personalize Your Display
Once everything is set up, you can start personalizing your Smart Ink screen. Use dedicated apps to update the display with images, notifications, or even your favorite quotes. The low power consumption of E Ink means your phone case display will last for days on a single charge.
