You followed slowly behind your dad into the living room, finding Scarlett already settled on the couch with a bowl of popcorn. “Hey you two” Scarlett smiled, a little too friendly for your liking, despite your earlier bonding time. “Did you apologise?” The blonde asked Colin “yeah” your dad nodded. “Good, now let’s watch a film, what’s your pick y/n?” Scarlett said as she adjusted her position on the couch, hoping you would join her. She was slightly disappointed when you took a seat on the spare armchair beside the expensive looking couch, wiping at your suddenly stuffy nose “terminator 2” you said as you slumped down. “Oh one of my favs, nice pick” Scarlett said as Colin came and sat beside her. Your dad sighed as he got comfortable “guess I gotta get used to being outnumbered again” Colin smiled as he wrapped his arm around the blondes shoulders “looks like you girls are already ganging up on me” he joked. “We make a good team y/n” Scarlett smiled at you “we’re not a team” you coldly replied “just two people living under the same roof who happen to get on occasionally” you said with a croaky voice. You didn’t see it, but Scarlett smiled at your words. Even if it was only occasionally, she was happy to be getting on with you, it was a start.
Your eyes grew tired towards the end of the film, a small headache forming behind your eyes. The exhaustion due to your restless night soon lulled you into a comfortable doze. “I think someone’s ready for bed” Scarlett whispered when she saw your head slowly bobbing to the side. “Y/n, wakey wakey!” Your dad called, using that annoying voice which he thought was hilarious. Your brows furrowed as you shuffled slightly “Colin!” Scarlett groaned. “Sorry kiddo” he laughed “you tired? Why don’t you go take a nap before dinner?” He said. You sighed loudly as you sat up, rubbing at your sore eyes “no I’m good” you said. “You sure?” Colin asked worriedly, to which you nodded in response. “You do look a little pale y/n” Scarlett piped up. “God I’m fine! What do you care anyway?” You snapped as you stood from the chair, leaving heavy footsteps in the path of your exit. “Hey! What did I tell you about the attitude!” Your dad called after you. “Leave it honey, she doesn’t seem well” the blonde said, running her hand along Colin’s arm in what she hoped was a soothing manor. “She’s fine” he huffed.
You made it halfway up the stairs before a rough cough escaped your lungs, as if being home sick wasn’t enough, now you were getting actually sick. You finally made it to your bedroom, where you flopped down dramatically onto your bed. Being too tired to change, you rolled over into your stomach letting your heavy head hit the pillow. You slept through dinner, Colin left you to sleep when he came to check on you. You slept so deeply, it was morning the next time you opened your eyes. You whined as the morning sun hit your gaze, making your pounding headache ten times worse. You were slightly dazed, but still knew it was Monday, meaning you needed to get ready for school. You peeled back your duvet and began shivering despite the sweat running down your head. You somehow made it to the door quickly, ignoring the ache of your muscles in each step. When making your way to the bathroom, the haze behind your eyes caught up with you, sending you toppling down to your knees. The crash against the wall had your dad awake in seconds “y/n?” He said as he swung open his bedroom door.
You saw a hint of worry come over your dad as he ran towards you “are you alright kid?” He said as he began to help you up “god you’re boiling” he exclaimed, deciding it would be better to keep you sitting. An inquisitive blonde appeared in the doorway, also awoken by the noise “is everything alright?” She said. “You were right, I think she’s sick” Colin frowned as he held you in his arms. “M fine” you whined “gotta school go” you slurred. “No sweetie I don’t think you’re going to school today” your dad said “I…um…I’ll call them okay, and we’ll…we’ll get you feeling better in no time” he stuttered, slightly unsure of what to do “let’s get you back to bed” he said. “I think she needs a shower first” Scarlett said, still standing in the doorway. “What?” Colin said, looking up at her. The older woman came to rest the back of her hand on your forehead, you shuffled away when she came into contact with you, pulling a face of disgust. “She’s too warm, she needs a cold shower” the woman said. Colin’s face fell into shock “right…well uh” he mumbled. “I’ll do it” Scarlett said “if that’s okay with you” she asked as she placed a comforting hand on your shoulder, thrilled when you didn’t shrug her off. Your dad smiled at the offer from his fiancé “you go call her school” she smiled back “I don’t know the number” Colin said in defeat. “I’ll find it later” Scarlett said as she rolled her eyes.
You felt a pair of arms scooping you underneath your arms, gently lifting you away from the floor “ok sweetie, come on let’s get you in the shower” Scarlett said as she took on all of your weight. Being too dizzy to notice, you allowed yourself to be helped into the bathroom and deposited into the toilet lid. The running water caught your attention and you furiously rubbed at your eyes trying to regain your vision. “Hey try not to do that okay, you’ll make them sore” Scarlett said as she reached for your hands. “Leave me lone” you said as you saw a flash of blonde hair “don wan you” you grumbled. Scarlett was getting used to your standoffish attitude, so she didn’t take your words to heart. “I know you don’t y/n but you need a shower and I don’t think you can do it yourself right now” she said as she checked the temperature of the water. Satisfied that it was cool enough, Scarlett began peeling away the shirt stuck to your skin “we’ll keep your underwear on okay but I need to take your shorts off too” she said soothingly. Despite your best ideas, you allowed the blonde to help you stand and step out of your shorts as they pooled at your ankles. “‘S cold” you groaned as you stepped underneath the water. “I know sweetheart but we gotta cool you down” Scarlett said as she helped you to sit in the tub.
You whined as more of your skin came into contact with the cold water, Scarlett gently shushed you as she helped you to settle against the tiles. You didn’t put up much of a fight once your body was supported by the tiles and Scarlett took the opportunity to search for your schools phone number. Once she found it, the actress poked her head out of the bathroom door and called for her fiancé. “I got the schools number” she said as Colin climbed the last few steps. “Thank you baby, is she okay?” he asked as he typed the number into his own phone. “She’s only just got in but it should cool her down a bit. I’m guessing Marie used to take care of this kinda stuff?” Scarlett questioned. Colin smiled at the mention of his late wife “yeah she did” he said, reliving all the times you would be napping with your mother when you had a cold. “Why don’t you go make her some breakfast, she needs to eat before we give her some medicine” Scarlett said as she held Colin’s hand lovingly “okay yeah” your dad sighed as he ran back down the staircase, still in his panicked state at your sudden sickness.
Scarlett returned to the side of the bath and leant over to gauge your temperature, she was delighted when you felt much cooler than before. “Okay let’s get you out sweetie” she said as she reached for a fluffy towel. “No tired” you mumbled through the droplets of the water “thought you said it was too cold?” Scarlett smirked as she helped you to stand up again. “Don wan your help if you jus gon make fun of me” you argued, your anger a stark juxtaposition to the grip you had on her arms. “Sorry baby” Scarlett said, the nickname sliding off her tongue so naturally. You grimaced in annoyance at her affection but allowed her to help you back to your bedroom nonetheless. “Sit tight okay, I’ll grab you some fresh clothes” the blonde said as she sat you on your bed “I feel sick” you groaned as you wrapped your arms around your bubbling stomach. Scarlett took notice of your movements and hurried across the room to place your bin underneath your chin. On cue, the small contents of your stomach came out, it was mostly acid considering you hadn’t eaten in almost 15 hours. “Alright sweetie, it’s okay, let it all out” Scarlett cooed as she ran her hands along your back. You pulled back when you were done, avoiding the bin as you moved your head forwards to rest on the blondes frame. She placed the metal can back on the floor and gently soothed the skin of your arms. “I…I need to get dressed” you stuttered as you slowly pushed Scarlett away, feeling guilty for relying on her so heavily. “Do you want some help” Scarlett asked. “No, I can do it” you said as you pushed yourself to your feet and turned your back to the older woman, ending the conversation.
Scarlett waited just outside your door while you pulled your clothes back onto your cooler body. Colin came rising back up the stairs with a tray of fever friendly food. “Hey, she’s just getting dressed” the blonde said as she leaned over the tray to give her fiancé a kiss. “Okay hunny, thanks for looking after her” Colin said “I made her soup and a few slices of toast” he sighed as he held out the tray, wishing you could get better quickly, he hated to see you like this. “That should settle her stomach a bit, she threw up” Scarlett frowned, also hating to see you like this. “Oh god okay, I’ll see if I can get the rest of the week off work, I’m due back tomorrow” Colin said. He placed the tray on the hallway table and pulled out his phone to call his boss when a small whimper came from your bedroom. “Scarlett?” You called out “yeah sweetheart” the blonde replied leaning gently against the door. “I think I need some help getting dressed” you muttered “okay I’m coming in” Scarlett said as she picked up the tray of food for you “I got her” she nodded to your father. Scarlett couldn’t help the pitying whine that escaped her when she came back into your room. You were half sitting on the bed and half sitting on the floor, you’d managed to dress your lower half but when trying to put a loose sports bra over your head, you failed tremendously. The older woman kept her eyes above your shoulders as she helped to pull the bra over your chest, when you were covered she grabbed the large shirt she had laid out and helped you to slip into it. “Thank you” you whispered, “don’t mention it sweetie.
You climbed back into bed as Scarlett carried over the food your dad had prepared “‘M not hungry” you whined as she set it down on your lap. “You need to eat y/n, you’ll feel better I promise. And after your done we’ll get some medicine in you then you can sleep okay” Scarlett said, unconsciously leaning forward to brush away a loose strand of your hair. You continued to moan in disagreement but soon you had finished the whole meal, you felt a little bitter though you were definitely not going to tell Scarlett she was right. Your dad stopped by as you were finishing up, arms full of medication as he wasn’t sure which ones you needed. You and Scarlett both chuckled as his frantic state “give it here” she blonde rolled her eyes and reached for the basket. “How are you feeling pumpkin?” Colin asked as he rested a hand on your forehead “sleepy” you whispered “we’ll get you tucked in soon I promise” he cooed. Scarlett found what medicine you needed and helped you to swallow it, despite your unwillingness. She stood back as her fiancé helped to soothe you to sleep “get some sleep” Colin said as he switched off your overhead light, leaving you to rest. “I can’t get the week off” your dad sighed as he closed you bedroom door “they’re behind on scripts for the sketches I gotta go in” he sighed. “She’ll understand baby” Scarlett said as held Colin’s hand tightly “and I’ll be here to look after her” she said. “I know it’s just, her mom used to watch her when she was sick, or on school holidays, practically all the time cause I was at work. I thought I would finally have a chance to be there for her” Colin frowned. “She knows that you love her CJ, and she knows that you’re always gonna be there for her, wherever you are” the blonde said as she brushed his cheeks in her hands. “Come on, I think we have time for our own breakfast while she sleeps” Scarlett smiled as she lead her fiancé back down to the living room.
The pair kept a close eye on you for the rest of the day, although you slept for most of it. Despite your sickness, Scarlett and Colin used this time to spend together, basking in each other’s comfort. You were awake now and enjoying a sit com in the silence of your room. The medicine was beginning to ware off and you felt the same bubbling in your stomach return from earlier. Colin shot up from his desk when he heard the retching coming from upstairs, he jumped into action as he ran up to you followed by Scarlett. The door swung open to reveal you with your head over the bin once again “oh pumpkin” your dad cooed. “Daddy” you whined as she came to your side. The blonde also appeared behind you, pulling your hair into a loose ponytail to avoid it getting in the way. Colin nodded in thanks to his partner as he gently stroked your back “it’s alright kiddo” he soothed. When you were done, you leaned back against your dad in defeat. He didn’t waste a second as he scooped you up into his arm, bringing you back to your bed. You saw the look in his eyes, the one that meant he had something to tell you “you have to go to work tomorrow don’t you?” You quietly asked. “Yeah baby, I’m so sorry there’s nothing I can do” Colin said as he reached around your shoulders to hold you against himself. “Scarlett will be here though, she can look after you okay?” He said. You drew your gaze to the blonde standing at the foot of your bed. You wished your dad could be with you, the comfort of your mother was absent and now so would your father’s, Scarlett was the last person you wanted around right now. “Okay” you sighed in defeat. You supposed it could’ve been worse, and Scarlett had helped you out today. Whether or not you wanted to admit it.
You soon fell back asleep in your fathers arms, feeling comforted by his presence. You didn’t join him and Scarlett for dinner, your stomach not being able to hold anything. Nightfall soon came and you resorted to having a movie marathon having slept so much already. You were feeling worse than ever as you couldn’t take any of the medication on an empty stomach, but you just couldn’t keep anything down, your tummy was constantly aching. It was around three am when you couldn’t hold back from stumbling over to the bin again. You had no concept of time and the world was going around in a blur. “Y/n?” You heard as you gently turned your head to the footsteps closing in. “Oh pumpkin” Colin sighed as he came to your side. “Dad” you whined as you leaned into him “what time is it?” You asked. “About 3” your father said. You glanced towards your window, seeing no light leaking through “am?” You said feeling guilty for waking him. “Go back to sleep daddy, you have work today” you said as you toyed with his necklace. “It’s okay baby don’t worry about me” Colin said as he too your face into his hands. “You’re gonna be tired” you frowned, your vision blurring slightly. “No, no sweetie it’s okay” your dad said as he helped you to stand.
“Come on let’s get you back to bed” Colin said as he supported your weight on the short walk back to your mattress. “I wanna go home” you said as water crept up behind your eyes. “You are home kiddo” your dad sighed as he began to tuck you back into bed. “I’ll never be home again, not without mom” you cried, thinking about your moms soft hands gently flowing through your long hair. “Pumpkin, you gotta let her go” Colin whispered. “What like you did” you snapped, sitting up with a sudden burst of energy. “You just let her go, moved on and forgot about her. You sold her house, drove in some new bimbo to replace her and just let her go!” You shouted, tears now streaming down your face. “Y/n” your dad sighed “it’s not heathy to keep holding on, she would want you to-“ he continued before you cut him off “don’t you dare say she’d want me to move on” you sobbed. Colin sat back in defeat as you flipped back down into bed, turning your back to him and pulling your stuffed bear close to your face. “Y/n” he whispered “just go dad. You’ve got work in a few hours. I’m not gonna be the reason you get fired for falling asleep at your desk” you muttered under your breath, shaking due to your small outburst and probably your once again rising temperature. “Scarlett’s here if you need anything” Colin said coldly as he headed off back to bed for a few extra hours. “Like fuck” you cursed.

 Xichen isn't in his room.
"Told you," Wei Wuxian says. "Bet you a bottle of wine he's in Da-ge's."
"Do I look like a fool to you?" Nie Huaisang demands.
Wei Wuxian whistles. "We'd need a lot more alcohol and maybe a flow chart to answer that question."
Nie Huaisang hits him with his fan.
Lan Wangji takes a deep, calming breath. There are plenty of reasonable explanations for why his brother is out of his room after curfew that don’t involve Nie Mingjue.
He can’t think of any, currently, but that’s because the two of them slap fighting each other behind him.
“Enough,” he snaps. He can’t turn them over to the one duty senior disciple because they’re clan heirs and any punishment could have political implications, which means Xichen or Uncle need to be the ones to issue them. But Xichen isn’t here and Uncle won’t be pleased to be woken up over a couple tardy disciples. The issue of the wards is concerning, but they’d been back in place when he’d gone to check, and there’s no real reason it can’t wait to morning. “Go to your dormitory. I’ll report your actions to my uncle in the morning.”
Xichen would have been more lenient, but he thinks they could benefit from a strict punishment.
“Why don’t you escort us there?” Wei Wuxian asks with a smile that makes Lan Wangji want to lean away from him or maybe lean cl – no, definitely away. “This place is so big. You don’t want me getting lost, do you?”
The paths are rather easy to follow, even at night. They hadn’t seemed to have any trouble getting here in the first place.
Nie Huaisang retches. “Seriously? First Da-ge and now you? What is it about the Lans?” He pauses, looking Lan Wangji up and down in a way that he’s not totally certain he’s comfortable with. “Okay, I mean, I suppose I see the appeal, but still.”
Wei Wuxian reaches out to punch Nie Huaisang in the side without looking at him. “Shut up.”
“Maybe we should get more alcohol,” he continues, not listening. “I think I’m going to need it.”
Lan Wangji leaves them still bickering.
~
The next morning Nie Huaisang wails all throughout his punishment. It’s not even that bad – he doesn’t even have to do a handstand, just copy rules of punctuality and prohibition.
Wei Wuxian, on account of meddling with the wards (Xichen had been impressed but Uncle hadn’t been), has to a handstand for several hours in the courtyard.
Doing it shirtless seems unnecessary.
Winking at him every time he walks by also seems unnecessary.
“Wow,” Xichen says, the time he’s unfortunately there to witness this behavior. “Are you sure he’s adopted?”
“Shut up,” Nie Mingjue grumbles.
Xichen listens about as well as Nie Huaisang had. Lan Wangji can’t mind, because he shouldn’t be saying that to him anyway. “Because I remember you at a certain age-”
Nie Mingjue draws his sword and Xichen is laughing as he mirrors him, the two of the sparring across the courtyard.
Lan Wangji is glad that Xichen has a friend.
He just wishes him visiting wasn’t necessitated by Wei Wuxian and Nie Huaisang making a mess of everything as quickly as possible.

Tumblr media
‘How could you both be so stupid?’ You threw your hands in the air and shot a glare at Neteyam. ‘You could’ve died! Does that mean nothing to you? Your father explicitly told you to observe, not engage! You are like a child Neteyam, both you and Lo’ak!’
‘I wanted to stop him, he’s just too disobedient.’ He avoided your eyes.
‘And you had to take the blame again? He’s never going to learn if you keep doing that.’ You shook your head and sighed.
‘Can you stop? I’m the oldest and I need to protect my siblings.’
‘No. No, Neteyam. I am the oldest. I may not be your sibling but I am the oldest and, believe it or not, I wouldn’t forgive myself if anything happened to them.’
Especially you.
‘You can protect them, be a big brother, but don’t take credit for every stupid thing they do!’ You moved closer to him and snapped your fingers in front of his face to get his attention. ‘I know you want to prove your father you can be a warrior, but it doesn’t mean that you have to put your life at risk when Lo’ak does something stupid.’ You huffed. ‘Just be careful next time.’
Neteyam felt jealous of you, of the way his father trusted you enough to put you in risky missions because he knew you would survive, of the way he praised your fighting skills and of the way he put you on a pedestal. You were born during the first war with the sky people and both of your parents had died fighting. The clan surrounded you with love when you were growing up, but you had never had anyone to call a mother or a father. You were just an orphan trying to find a place alongside everyone that you crossed paths with. So, when Neteyam was jealous of you having his father approval and trust, you were jealous of him for having a real family. When you were younger you would hide behind the trees and watch them cuddle underneath the night sky, your little heart breaking and longing for this kind of comfort and love. Even though you were Omatikaya by blood you still sometimes felt like an outsider. You occupied your time with training, flying, shooting arrows and that’s why Jake was impressed, that’s why you were one of his favorite warriors and he knew he could trust you. He even got you your own gun, which Neteyam and Lo’ak were especially jealous of.
Deep down you knew what this was about. Jake cared about you, but not like he cared about his own children. That was the real reason you were sent on those missions, the reason he took you everywhere with him on fights. He just didn’t want to risk his sons life's. You knew that and you still took part in everything because those were the moments when you felt like you belong.

‘Can we talk?’ Jake asked from behind you.
‘Of course, sir.’ You nodded your head and stopped sharpening the spears.
He sat down next to you and sighed.
‘We are leaving tomorrow.’ He said firmly. ‘This is not a safe place for my family anymore.’
‘Oh, I see.’ You whispered, a wave of sadness ran through your whole body.
‘I want you to come with us.’ Your ear twitched and you looked up at him with hopeful eyes. ‘And I want you to promise me you will protect my children when I won’t be able to do it myself.’
‘I promise.’ You answered quickly. ‘I’ll do my best, sir.’
He smiled at you and stood up, ‘Tomorrow after the ceremony. Be ready.’ He shot you one last glance and walked away.
The next day you were waiting for the Sully family by the ikrans, your thoughts were interrupted by a loud shriek of Tuk.
‘Are you coming with us (Y/n)?’ She asked after she ran up to you.
‘I am.’ You smiled at her and after giving you a hug she ran back to her mom in order to get on an ikran with her.
While you were checking your bags attached to your own animal, you felt someone intensely staring at the back of your head. You didn’t have to turn around to know it was Neteyam. You never knew why he gave you those weird glances, a part of you wished they weren’t that hateful. At first you tried being friends with him, but after a while his behavior towards you had changed. While you were getting along with his younger siblings, he was always staying away from you, watching your every move. The relationship between you felt like some sort of rivalry, but there was always this warm feeling you couldn’t shake off when you knew he was nearby.
After a long, tiring flight to the Metkayina clan you were exhausted, the thought of laying down was the only one in your head. You made the appropriate gesture towards the Tsahik and the Olo’eyktan when they arrived and you suddenly felt really small under Ronal’s gaze. She started walking around you all, examining your tails and postures.
‘Is this also your child, Jakesully?’ She asked, you could feel her judging eyes on you.
‘No. She’s not my child, but she is the best warrior in our clan and she is important to my family.’
‘Is that true?’ She moved to look into your eyes.
‘Yes, Tsahik Ronal.’ You gave her a long nod and felt the warm feeling spreading in your heart after hearing that you were important to the Sully’s.
She whispered something to herself and went back to her husband who a moment later agreed that all of you could stay with them. You smiled to yourself when you were walking through the village following Tsireya, everything felt so fresh and untouched by war, those people didn’t live in fear unlike your clan. You dropped your belongings on the floor and went over to Neytiri to help her.
‘It’s okay, you can go with others and learn the Metkayina ways, I can handle the unpacking.’ She told you and put her hand on your arm.
‘Are you sure?’
‘Yes, go.’ She smiled sweetly and playfully pushed you towards the exit of your new home.
You ran towards the shore and started looking for your friends. When you finally spotted them you quickly jumped into the water and swam quickly in their direction.
‘Can I join?’ You asked Tsireya when you emerged from the water.
‘Of course!’ She gave you a smile. ‘Follow us everyone.’
After swimming for a while she took all of you to meet the ilu’s and learn how to ride them. You were scared of failure, especially after seeing how fast Lo’ak let go of his ilu. Tsireya helped you get on the animal and told you that you’re gonna be okay, you just have to hold it tight.
‘How could she not be fine? She’s the best warrior after all.’ Neteyam muttered with annoyance.
‘Stop it.’ Kiri smacked his arm.
‘What? She shouldn’t be here, her place is with the clan. I don’t even get why she’s here with us in the first place.’
‘It’s not my fault your dad values my skills more than he does yours.’ You replied harshly and then without a second thought told your ilu in your mind to go forward.
You felt angry at Neteyam, rage was filling your body. You were the best for a reason and you would prove that to him. You tightened your grip on the handle attached to the animal’s body and took the biggest breath in your life before diving into the depths of the ocean. The speed was horrible and you felt your hand slowly relaxing.
No. I won’t give him the satisfaction.
You tightened your fist and held the handle even harder than before. After readjusting your position and squeezing your thighs to feel more steady you felt the oxygen slowly leaving your lungs. You shut your eyes and rode upwards, soon emerging from the water and jumping with your ilu only to dive again. You rode over to your friends and smiled at Tsireya. Everyone was impressed, because this was your first try and it definitely required special skills to get it this perfect. Annoyance was written on Neteyam’s face, he scoffed and started swimming away. You sighed and got off the ilu.
‘Neteyam, wait!’ You screamed and swam towards him.
He didn’t even look back and you reached him after you both got out of the water.
‘Neteyam, what happened?’ You touched his arm and he immediately turned around to face you.
‘You happened.’ He scoffed. ‘I am tired of you taking my place all the time. I try so hard to meet my dad’s standards and it’s never appreciated because of you!’
‘It’s not my fau-‘
‘It is. It is your fault.’ He interrupted your sentence and walked away quickly.
And there it was again. The feeling of loneliness consumed you once again, when the boy you adored walked away feeling only hatred towards you. Sure, you were often picking fights with him, replying to his comments with the same energy, but maybe this time you really did take it too far?
° 𐐪𐑂 ♡ 𐐪𐑂 ₒ 𐐪𐑂 ♡ 𐐪𐑂 °
You were helping Tsireya with some of the duties one day and Neteyam was far from you, but still in your sight. You were stealing quick glances at him so that your friend wouldn’t see it, when suddenly he quickly swam away and you couldn’t see him anymore. You excused yourself and left Tsireya by herself to go and see what had happened that made him go that fast. The closer you got to the direction he swam towards, the better you heard voices screaming and sounds of fighting. You came over to Kiri, she was softly laughing at the pile of boys in front of her. You had to admit it was funny, but at the same time you were all supposed to be on your best behavior. Because of that, you walked over to them and hissed loudly, their heads turning to face you.
‘Enough.’ You spat and looked over at Lo’ak and Neteyam. ‘Both of you.’
They stood up and walked towards Kiri, you hissed at the Metkayina boys once again and turned around to join the Sully’s.
‘It was going well, you didn’t have to-‘
‘Was it, Lo’ak?’ You stopped and looked at him. ‘You were supposed to be on your best behavior, what were you thinking?’ You turned to the older boy.
He didn’t reply to you, he just took his brother by his arm and walked away.
‘You are both unbelievable.’ Kiri whispered making you turn your head in her direction.
‘What do you mean?’
‘Just tell him you like him already.’ She whined.
‘You know I can’t.’ A sigh escaped your lips. ‘He hates me, Kiri. He sees me as a rival, he despises me.’
‘He doesn’t.’
‘He does.’ You said louder. ‘I don’t want to talk about it anymore, let’s go.’
‘Lo’ak was the one that started that fight, he was just helping him.’
‘I know.’ You replied and looked down, soon arriving at your home.
‘And you? Why weren’t you keeping an eye on them?’ Jake turned to you when you entered the shack.
‘I’m sorry, I was helping Tsireya.’ You avoided his gaze. ‘Next time I won’t let anything happen to them.’
And you were right.
You jumped down from your ikran and landed on the sky people’s ship. Neteyam found his way to his siblings and Tsireya as fast as you, jumping onto the deck from his ilu. You shot your arrows towards some sky people coming towards you.
‘Cut the handcuffs!’ You told him when he reached you.
‘Come on, bro. Hurry up!’ Lo’ak screamed at his brother.
You turned around and saw Tsireya and Tuk jumping into the water, ‘Go! Both of you!’ You yelled at the brothers.
Neteyam started dragging the boy away, ‘They have Spider! We have to help him!’ Lo’ak tugged on his brother’s arm.
You locked your eyes with Neteyam, ‘Shit!’ He hissed. ‘Okay, let’s go.’
‘No, you are not going anywhere.’ You stopped both of them. ‘Go back to your father, right now.’
‘We have to help Spider, please (Y/n).’ Lo’ak looked at you with terrified eyes.
‘UGH!’ You shook your head and hang your bow on your body. ‘Just stay close.’ You told them and ran towards the inside of the ship.
You were quietly moving on the big pipe on the ceiling when some people started walking your way, Spider was surrounded by them in a circle. All three of you jumped down at the people and freed your friend, but then a pure moment of joy was interrupted by gunshots firing your way.
‘Go! Go!’ You screamed and pushed the boys towards a wall that would hide all of you.
Neteyam snatched the gun from Lo’ak and started shooting at the enemies, you pulled out the gun Jake had gifted you and helped him.
‘I’ll tell you when to jump and you jump!’ You shouted and looked over at them, they were rapidly nodding their heads. You gave a few more shots towards the enemies and took a deep breath. ‘Now!’
Lo’ak and Spider jumped quickly into the water, you pushed Neteyam first and jumped as the last person. For a second you felt relief when you heard their happy screams, but it was washed away when you started struggling with keeping your head above the water. Adrenaline started coming down and you felt your lower abdomen on fire.
‘Yes! We did it bro!’ Lo’ak hugged his brother who was laughing softly.
‘Come on! We need to go!’ Neteyam yelled when Tsireya came up from the water riding her ilu.
‘Nete…Neteyam…’ You coughed.
His smile faded and he rapidly swam towards you.
‘I’m shot you skxawng.’
‘Shit! Shit!’ He cursed. ‘Just hold on a second!’ He held you tightly and sat you down on the ilu. ‘It’s okay, just hold on.’ His panicked voice echoed through your ears.
He saw his father standing on a rock and everyone started screaming for him. A worried expression came up on his face when he saw his son holding you tightly.
‘She’s shot, dad, help her!’ They started pulling you up to rest you on the wet rock.
Jake inspected your body only to see a big wound on your lower stomach which was quickly bleeding out.
‘Take her to the village, right now.’ He told Neteyam and helped put you on the animal again.
Neteyam held you in his arms as he tried to ride the animal as quickly as he could without causing more damage to you.
‘Hold on, okay? Don’t you dare die on me!’ He yelled to you.
‘But I am so sleepy, Nete..’ Your voice was weak, but he still heard you.
‘No, don’t sleep, we’re right there, just…Just hold on..’ He finally saw the village and hope filled him up. ‘We’re here, it’s okay. It’s gonna be okay.’ He looked down at you to check if your eyes were still open and he saw you slowly blinking. ‘HELP! I NEED HELP!’ He screamed as loud as he could which caught the attention of some people by the coast, they quickly ran to get the Tsahik who was helping other wounded warriors.
‘Neteyam..’ You coughed.
‘We’re here, hold on for me.’ He looked down at you again.
‘I see…’ Your voice was getting weaker. ‘I see you, Neteyam.’ You whispered and closed your eyes.
‘No. No, no, no. Help! I need the Tsahik!’ He got off the ilu holding your limp body in his arms.
Ronal emerged from behind the people and told him to put you in one of the shacks. The Tsahik pushed him outside and covered the entrance with a curtain made out of big leaves and seaweed. Neteyam finally felt the tears on his face which previously were washed away by the splashing water. He didn’t know what to do, fear, sadness and adrenaline were running through his body. He waited for what felt like hours and when he felt Tuk’s arms around him all of a sudden he felt safe. His whole family was okay and when he came eye to eye with his father, he broke down crying again. Jake hugged his son and caressed his hair with his hand. A sudden rustle made Neteyam break the comforting hug. Everyone turned towards the sound, Ronal was standing in front of the shack, her expression was unreadable. She locked eyes with Neteyam.
‘She’s alive. Barely.’ She stated.
‘Thank you, Great Mother.’ Kiri whispered and hugged her brother from the side.
‘She needs a lot of rest and I am not certain if she will survive the night.’ Ronal said and started walking away. ‘Do not bother her. Now it is all up to Eywa.’

Your nostrils were filled with a disgusting smell which made you slowly open your eyes. You saw Ronal putting some type of paste on your wound and you hissed.
‘I guess this means I’m not dead.’ You whispered, your voice hoarse.
‘No, but it was close.’ She replied and wrapped some bandages around your stomach. ‘Rest, my child.’ She whispered and walked out, leaving you alone once again.
After a while the silence was interrupted by Jake, ‘Hi.’ He said as he sat down next to you.
‘I told you I’d keep them safe.’ You weakly smiled at him and he let out a soft laugh.
‘Yeah, I knew you would.’ His smile quickly faded. ‘I.. I wanted to thank you. For protecting them. And I’m sorry for using you so much, on all of those fights… I forget that you are still young, god… You’re only a year older than Neteyam and I’ve never thought something like this would happen to you…’ He paused. ‘You have a whole life in front of you, I’m sorry for trying to take that away and not protecting you.’
‘It’s okay.’ You whispered. ‘I know you only wanted to keep your family safe.’
He nodded and stood up, a tear fell down his cheek. He looked like he wanted to say something more, but nothing came out, he gave you one last smile and walked outside. After a while you closed your eyes because the light started bothering you, but you immediately opened them when you felt someone put their hand in yours. You looked at the way your fingers were intertwined with Neteyam’s and gave him a soft smile.
‘I’m so sorry.’ He whispered.
‘You have nothing to be sorry about.’ You coughed out.
‘I have. I am sorry for getting angry at you, for getting jealous about my father and for..’
‘Hey, it’s okay.’ You whispered and stroked his hand with your thumb. ‘And I’m sorry too, I shouldn’t be taking your place by your dad’s side.’
He nodded and squeezed your hand, ‘It’s okay, I know you just wanted someone to be proud of you. Kiri told me how… How you feel like an outsider all the time, because you don’t have…’
‘Parents?’
‘Yeah.’ He looked down at the floor.
‘After all these years I got used to having no one, but when your dad and other warriors from the clan were so proud of me… I just felt this hapiness that I finally belong somewhere, that’s why I always wanted to be the best…I’m sorry again, Neteyam.’
‘I forgive you.’ He smiled. ‘I can’t believe you were ready to die for me.’ He softly laughed and you reciprocated the smile.
‘I can.’ You whispered. ‘And I forgive you too, for being so mean to me.’ Your smile grew wider. ‘But you were cute when you were angry.’
‘Is that so?’ You gave him a long nod. ‘And now I’m not?’
‘No.’
‘Liar.’
Your giggles filled up the space around you and you didn’t even notice when he got so close to your face. You felt his breath on your skin and he put his other hand on your cheek.
‘I always thought you hated me.’ You whispered into his lips.
‘Do you still think that?’
‘No.’ It left your lips more like a breath rather than a word.
He finally closed the gap between you and it all just felt right. His lips on yours felt so right. You finally felt like you were not alone.
‘I see you, (Y/n).’

There is only so much silence a room can hold before it becomes deafening.
You and Simon sit across from each other at the table, a half-full folder of documents thrown hazardously between the two of you on the rich wood- teetering on the edge. The other half is scattered on the floor, out of order and long forgotten. Neither of you make an effort to pick them up or to rescue the manila folder. Leaving everything half in, half-out and on the verge of falling apart. Simon had made an effort to catch it when he first threw it, but quickly retracted his hands when he saw it stop just short of falling.
Maybe there is something symbolic in that. In this sad, lonely picture formed between the two of you. In a place that used to be so warm and loving, now left cold and dirtied.
You haven’t looked at Simon since he had joined you at the table, and he doesn’t seem to be looking at you too. His eyes are far off, here but gone at the same time. Like always- like the nature of his life makes him. In his mind, he recalls the moments that led up to this. Slightly fleshed out images that dance in front of his eyes like war flashbacks.
The sound of his rough steps following after you when he had confronted you with the folder- clean and pristine, sitting by itself in a drawer he never knew you used- echo in his ears. He can see the dimly lit hallway the two of you walked down as you tried to escape into the living room, only stopped when he had extended his arm and grabbed you by the wrist.
“How long have you had these?”
“So what, huh? You’re not going to say anything to me now?”
“And say what, Simon? What can I say to you? You’ve never listened to me before. Do you want me to beg you for something? Haven’t I done enough begging in my lifetime for you to do something?”
“…When were you planning on giving these to me?”
“I can’t give something to someone who’s never here.”
Simon doesn’t think he’ll ever forget the sob that had clawed itself through your chest, or the way you had turned so sharply away from him as you walked away. He had been frozen in his spot, helpless in trying to soothe you. His own words trapped behind muscle and denial as they screamed I’m here! I’m right here.
Now he finds himself lost, floating in a sea of dark, murky water with no land in sight. Buried under dirt with nothing to crawl out with. Trapped and panicked and suffocating. His heart craving to go home, but his mind telling him there might not be a home to go back to.
Not unless he fights for it.
You keep your gaze forward as his chair creaks. Wood worn in from time and not use. Simon walks over the pile of paper, smooth under his feet. A path, a bridge, a connection.
Simon’s torso fills your vision. Then his chest, and his neck, and his face. Then he’s gone again, out of your line of sight as he kneels before you. The weight of his head falls onto your lap, the crown of his head pressing into your lower stomach. His arms- usually heavy- are like feathers around your waist as he simply holds you. Your hand drifts to his hair, and you run your fingers through it in comfort.
“Simon.”
“Hm?”
“Your back and knees will hurt later.”
“I know.”
Your eyes drift down to him, watching the way he closes his eyes and simply breaths you in. Like he’s trying to remember and engrave something in his mind. You sigh softly, a tie between tired and fond of this large man.
“The papers are still all over the floor, Simon.”
“I’ll clean it up. I promise.”
“You promise?”
“Yes, I promise.”
“Okay, Simon. Okay. I believe you.”
You look away again, scanning the mess on the floor and the folder on the table.
“Make sure you take out the trash when you finish.”
Simon squeezes you tighter, and you ignore the way your pants are starting to collect raindrops.
“Thank you.”

“There are guests, Your Majesty,” John tells you with pity in his voice, not mentioning it because he thinks you have forgotten, but because he needs you to be aware of the important fact. If you tried hard enough, it wasn’t too much of a task to remember your duties and who those entailed, but it was a relief to have John around to remind you of such things, since you valued your duties and relations with the outside world dearly.
You glance around nervously and give him a guilty pout, grabbing the last of your belongings.
“I know, I am so sorry, but this is important. Send them a plane and I will get back to them as soon as I can,” you plead and quickly rush out of the room to the main entrance hall, John following you as you make your way to the prepared jet.
Mind occupied by making sure your small legion is armed and ready to go as you walk, you get brought to an abrupt stop when two large men block your path. Raising your head, you glower curiously at the rude interruption. As busy as you have been the past weeks, you study each and every encounter you plan, so you know exactly who the two men are.
“Captain Wilson. Sergeant Barnes.”
“Your Majesty,” Sam’s greeting is curt, yet kind. “I don’t suppose a sudden departure is part of your infamous warm welcome?”
You narrow your eyes at him. “You have an awful lot of courage speaking to a queen this way,” you warn him, your tone formal before your features soften towards your guests. “But I apologise. Something important came up and I hardly think sending you into war with me is considered a warm welcome.”
The man you recognise as James Barnes lets out a humoured scoff. “Clearly, you don’t know us very well.”
Your eyes dart between the men suspiciously and a smile tugs at the corner of your mouth, hardly able to contain it at the sheer boldness coming from the men. After a pregnant pause and your legion having left the hall to board the jet, you slowly turn to John.
“John. You heard the men. Get them suited and onto the jet.” Sharing one more glance with the men, your eyes lingering on the twinkle of mischief in Bucky’s eyes, you brush past them and step onto the plane without another word.
“It’s not often a queen goes into war with her people.”
“Well, unfortunately my legions are struggling on their own,” you explain to Sam calmly.
“What happened?” Bucky asks, brows pulled together in slight worry.
“John? Could you please bring them up to speed while I get ready?”
As John takes over and shows the two heroes what their next mission will be as they serve someone else’s queen, you step over to the side and let one of your generals help you suit up. Slipping into the modern metal, rusted with nano technology, the shimmering suit glides over your body perfectly.
From the corner of your eyes, you notice Bucky Barnes losing interest from John’s briefing and your eyes lock with his. There’s a rush of heat pulsing through your body at the sheer boldness of Bucky not breaking eye contact once he gets caught staring. His eyes rake up and down the sleek suit and lock back onto yours, a knowing smirk pulling up the corner of his mouth before he drags his eyes away and turns back to his previous conversation.
Leaving you absolutely flustered and furious.
Did he just ogle a queen?
Bucky is startled enough for it to nearly show on his face when he sees the feral look you have on yours. He knows that look, has worn it plenty of times himself. Battle doesn’t quite leave your body and mind as soon as it is over. Even with your spectacular win, which Bucky knows is mostly because of your reliability and skills as a powerful leader, the raging chaos of adrenaline lingers like you have days worth of battles to fight still.
He came in to check up on you post-battle, easily slipping past your guards, to find you pacing in your blood-splattered gear around the chamber before what he assumes is your bedroom. The hall is large and decorated wonderfully, but so very empty with your restless figure pacing through it. He’s certain he can feel your energy buzzing all the way up to the impossibly high ceilings.
Having enough decency to announce himself, he gently knocks on the door from inside of the room. When you whirl towards him in your frenzy, he finds it amusing enough to plaster a smirk onto his face. “Restless, my queen?”
You huff through your nostrils. “I still have fight in me.” He knows. “I want to kill them for springing that attack on us.” He knows that too, but the gravel in your voice awakens a slumbering beast inside of him and fire starts curling around his bones.
“I think you gave them enough hell for what they did to you,” he assures you and something in your eyes seems to soften at that. You did give them hell. Rightfully so.
“But this energy–” You shake out your trembling hands to rid yourself of that restlessness. Bucky nods and slowly prowls closer, hands gliding into his pockets as he slants his head to the side to observe you.
“I know,” he acknowledges, “it takes a while to wear off.”
“How do you handle it?” you ask him, taking a steadying breath as he crosses the room. “After a fight, how do you get rid of all of that energy?”
Bucky flashes you a grin, his brows raising with intrigue and a mischievous shimmer in his eyes. “I hardly think I could speak about such methods to a sophisticated queen.”
“Sophisticated, my ass,” you snap, narrowing your eyes at the broad soldier. “You hardly felt like you had to be appropriate when you were watching me put on this suit,” you say with a scoff, ushering to the intricate metals you’re wearing.
“In my defence, I hadn’t seen you fight yet. Whereas now,” he shrugs, “I’d prefer staying in your good graces.”
“You fuck it out, don’t you?”
Bucky’s blink is the only sign of his surprise and he cocks his head at you again. “Excuse me?”
“The only way to get rid of the energy after battle is to get your dick wet,” you clarify, “isn’t it?”
Bucky chokes on a laugh, stepping even closer to you now with his hands still in his pockets, close enough to make you have to tilt your chin up. “You have a filthy mouth for a queen,” he breathes and to accentuate his words, his eyes drop to said mouth.
“I didn’t become queen by being prim and proper,” you explain with a little less fire than you intended to say it with.
“No,” he breathes, “you didn’t.”
Another restless shudder up your spine reminds you of your predicament, your thudding heartbeat not coming to a rest. You sigh, searching those blue eyes still trained on your lips. “Care to help a queen out?”
“You want to see me bow for you again, don’t you?” He smirks and finally raises his eyes to meet yours.
You can’t help but smile slightly, giving him a guilty shrug, because yes, you loved seeing him bow for you earlier as you stepped onto the battlefield. Not just that, plenty of pretty men had bowed for you. It was Bucky’s willingness and respect as he took a knee for you that was particularly invigorating. He matches your smile and takes a long second to let you take in what he is about to do, before slowly sinking to his knees in front of you, steady hands moving to rest on your thighs.
“Your people are awfully lucky to get to serve you every day,” he murmurs, looking up at you with eyes of fire and submission. That manages to make heat surge to your cheeks and ears, swallowing hard as you take in the sight before you. “May I?”
It takes all of your power not to nod too eagerly before he starts working off the buckles and belts of your suit, the nanotechnology wingmanning perfectly as the metal retreats into the hard base of the suit.
Soon, you are in nothing but your underwear. Bones and muscles are trembling beneath your skin in response to forcing your body to be utterly still. Chemical reactions are ricocheting against the barrier of your skin to make you spring apart. So much energy. So much fire and passion and fury still roiling inside of you. A heavy blanket settles over it – desire. But before you can order him to act on it, Bucky comes back to a stand.
“Close your eyes,” he mutters.
“I’m close to fighting you, Sergeant Barnes,” you promise him, showing your active restraint, but deciding to close your eyes anyway.
He huffs a soft laugh and you feel his eyes burning into your skin, a knuckle brazenly trailing over your collarbones and down the centre of your chest. “I will take you up on that another day,” he answers and your blood heats up at the fact that Bucky revels in both of those sides of you. Most men cower at your bloodlust, but not him. He kneels before it.
Speaking of him kneeling–
“I didn’t tell you to get up,” you remind him and his hand pauses.
“I didn’t particularly think it would be fair to leave you standing as I proceed to immobilise your legs, my queen,” he drawls and you snap your mouth shut. Your eyes slowly flutter open and you find him having taken a step back, holding out his hand for you to take.
Carefully taking it with a questioning look in your eyes, Bucky leads you to your bedroom like he has been there a thousand times. Slowly and deliberately, he guides you to your own bed, still fully clothed himself in those black leathers.
“I expected it to be more rough,” you admit steadily. “Fucking out that energy...”
Bucky turns back to you, hands now on your waist as he pivots you with your back to the bed, the backs on your legs touching the foot of it. “Fucking you roughly won’t do the trick,” he explains. “Fucking you thoroughly will.”
If you weren’t quaking before, this would do the trick. Your heartbeat is pulsing between your legs, hammering for attention, the seams of your underwear teasing you more than the man before you. It paralyses you, that desire coursing through your veins like syrup, makes you fall quiet. Only for a short while.
“Then do it.”
Bucky’s brows raise again, not having expected you to fold so fast. “What?”
“Did I fucking stutter?” you hiss at him. “I need you to fuck me before I explode.”
Bucky smirks at you again and you’re so tempted to smother that smirk – you have your ways. “I am not yours to give orders to.”
You restrain from rolling your eyes at him, the close proximity making you prone to holding your breath and making your words coming out strained. “I’m not going to beg for it.”
“You already have,” he reminds you, not an inch of him giving away that he might be unravelling. “And I think you will, sweetheart. I think you are seconds away from begging for it.”
As if in answer to his outrageous insinuation, a shudder racks through your bones and flashes of that wild battle make your nervous system rush to life again. It’s so frustrating, to have so much energy begging to be released.
His solid eyes and steady hands on your waist make you want to sink into him for relief. You want Bucky to tear you apart, almost similar to the way he tore apart those monsters earlier. Calculated, precise and only slightly unhinged. His fighting earlier was like a choreography your body wanted to study and practice until it can memorise nothing else. The way his muscles moved, the precise strikes of his metal arm, the focused crinkles in his handsome face, his thick thighs planting him firmly onto the ground – your ground. Fighting for your lands. For you.
My queen, he had called you. You suppose he does answer to your commands, then. But you might just beg for it. If only because it feels so tempting. To whine for his pleasure, sob for it and make him serve you like he wanted to do earlier. How awful, for a queen to want to beg for it.
“Please,” you almost gasp from holding your breath for too long.
He hums, low and deadly, his finger kneading gently and appreciatively into your soft flesh. “That’s a good girl,” he murmurs and before you can shout in outrage, he slowly dips down and presses his pillowy soft lips to your collarbone, instantly making your head tilt backwards.
His hands pull you close enough for your front to be pressed to his and your hands automatically grab his shoulders. His lips part and his tongue traces a singular line over the thinnest piece of skin on your body, leaving a trail of fire in its wake. His mouth moves up, tongue dipping in and out to raise your pulse as he suckles at your skin. Your fingers curl slightly and your body starts to nearly shake with jitters at the adrenaline coursing through you like an electrical charge.
Bucky bites down on the tense skin beneath your ear where he hums against you, the sound ringing in your head like a gong. His hands have travelled to your back, stroking up and down the bare skin until your bra pops loose with you barely noticing. You tremble with need when all you are left in are your panties and Bucky pulls away to once again sink down to his knees.
You swallow hard at his stare from below you and follow his silent command to sit down at the edge of the bed. Hooking his hands around your knees, he presses them apart and lifts one leg over his shoulder. Your fingers dig into the soft sheets with anticipation and you only break the intense eye contact to watch his tongue trace his bottom lip. He hooks your other leg over his shoulder and drags you to the very edge of the bed, getting comfortable on his knees.
“Is this where you want me?” he asks, but you don’t deign to answer him. “Kneeling before my queen.”
“Something tells me you don’t mind being there at all,” you answer tightly and his hands stroke up and down your calves lovingly. Bucky presses one kiss to your inner thighs, taking in a big whiff of air and groaning at the smell of your arousal.
“There is something about eating a meal on my knees that speaks to me,” he drawls, his eyes settling on said meal, only covered by the thin fabric of your panties. He presses another kiss, right over the damp fabric. You shudder.
“Then eat,” you bite back, scrambling to hang onto your power as a queen.
Bucky gives a wide grin, keeping his eyes on your soaking core. His hand lifts and his finger loops into the fabric, making you bite your lip painfully hard at the brief touch. He pulls the fabric to the side, spreading your legs enough for him to dive in, but not doing so yet. “That is no way to speak to your soldiers.”
Your soldier, Bucky supposes after today he is. You’re torture. Your smell, your voice, your body, the sheer power you have over him – over everyone.
Your hand finds his hair and you rake your fingers through the thick, brown tresses. Your eyes are soft when Bucky looks up to find them. “Will you take the honour of being my soldier?”
You’re genuine, he’s sure of it. Bucky can tell you’re asking him for so much more than just this. And considering his current predicament, he will consider his duties as your soldier later. Right now, he can only nod, entranced by the queen who has her legs wrapped around his head. He can only think of one duty right now and that is to rid you of all of that devastating warrior energy the only way he knows how.
Bucky buries his face between your legs and begins his feasting. Nudging his nose against your clit and prodding his tongue in and out of you. Licking every inch of your warm, wet, lovely cunt as if it’ll guarantee a place in your kingdom for him.
Sam will kill him for never returning home, but by the heavens, he can’t find it in him to care enough. Not with you tasting so heavenly and– fuck, those goddamn moans.
He was right, he was so fucking right. The slow and steady and longs thrusts make your body hiss in delight. The thorough swivel of his hips when he’s buried into you as far as possible, releases every bit of pent up energy that suffocates you. The sharp snap of his hips right as he’s about to hit home makes you shudder and sob, clenching around him every time as if you feel every thrust like the very first one.
Bucky strikes your deepest spot with each one, your hair between his fingers, your back arched to meet him and your cheek pressed into the mattress. Your eyes flutter painfully against your will, your toes curling when pleasure wraps around every abdominal muscle, your pussy spasming around him in need for release as the pressure between your hips grows to be unbearable.
The sounds that slip from your parted mouth sound inhumane. Soft and pitiful whimpers between huffs of breath. Oh God, oh God. You need him to slow down for a second, except he’s not going fast at all. He’s slow and deep and oh God, he’s so fucking deep.
You grapple for a grip in the sheets, any tether to reality slipping from your mind after every move he has already made. The last of your control, your power as a queen, slips away from you on a phantom wind, desire clouding every piece of domination inside of you. It’s all his now, you are all his now.
Within a short second, you get hauled up by your hair, arched against his heaving, sweaty chest until his mouth nips at your earlobe. Your hands grab his hips behind you, nails digging into his firm skin.
“You still there, my queen?” he coos, and you feel his grin as his mouth grazes over your neck possessively. Your answer is the harsh tightening of your nails into him and the groan he lets out makes you clench around him wantonly. “Oh, somewhere. You’re somewhere in that sex-riddled brain of yours. Losing your mind a little, are you?”
You swear you mean to speak a sentence – a word, at least – but the sound that comes out sounds like another garbled moan and Bucky laughs at your demise. He quickly presses a loving kiss to your shoulder, a deep thrust settling him so deep inside of you, you flutter helplessly around him.
“Don’t worry,” he hums, another deep thrust following as the hand in your hair slips to securely grip your throat and move your ear back to his mouth. “Next time, I will let you take the reigns. You can tie me to the bed and use me to make yourself come. I’m looking forward to it, actually.” You pulse around him and he snickers. “Oh, you like that, don’t you? Prefer to have control and use the ones that serve you.” He bites your ear softly and squeezes your throat. “Oh, but you look so pretty like this. Don’t take this away from me, sweetheart.”
It's a whirlwind of emotions that rush through you at his words. You feel his desperation to have you like this seep through his ignorant confidence having you exactly like he wants you. The last of your working brain cells are screaming yes, yes, yes at his request. You’ll let him have you like this every day for the rest of your life. And it flashes before your eyes, him waking you up by slowly fucking you, hand back in your hair and lazy mouth muttering filthy things against your skin. God, he’s filthy.
Your vision is swirling as his pace picks up and blood flow to your brain is slightly limited by his grip. Ecstasy is rushing through your head and limbs with heavy tingles, and your moans raise in pitch. The metal hand bruising your hips with its possessive grip, slides between your legs and messily toys with your clit, the feeling making you want to buckle over.
“Shit!” you gasp and throw your head back into his shoulder, thighs quaking at the stimulation. Too much, it’s too much. Your eyes roll to the back of your head as you feel every inch of him glide in and out of you with an ease and precision that feels degrading and embarrassing. Bucky’s breath is equally laboured now and his grip on you turns from possessive to desperate, like he cannot get enough of you into his hands.
“Come for me again, my queen,” he purrs in your ear, knowing what that term now does to you, and you nod blindly. Following his command blindly, unable to resist the feeling of his deep thrusts and his firm circles on your clit any longer, you let the warmth of your orgasm consume you. You tremble and shake and stiffen at his touch and he doesn’t stop. “Come on, keep coming. Keep fucking coming, baby.”
You choke out a sob, surely drawing blood with your nails as you gasp for air, for any word to make him ease up on you, but he only stops when you buckle over and your trembling form succumbs to the sheets below you. Curled up on the sheets, bearing the waves of pleasure that haunt your every nerve, you feel Bucky’s exhausted and sex-glazed eyes watching you carefully. You faintly feel the trickle of him come pulsing out of you and it nearly makes you smile.
Two hands, one scorching with heat and one a welcome cool, gently stroke up the sides of your thighs, cooing sounds coming from Bucky as he watches you come back to your senses. Lips follow his soothing touches, warm kisses being pressed to your quickly cooling skin.
“How’s that post-fight energy?” he asks softly and your eyes finally flutter open to meet his curious ones, the blue shimmering with… Pride.
“Fuck,” you pant, “you.”
He laughs, “Again?”
You breathe a soft laugh and he at last presses a kiss to your lips. If you had the energy, you know your body would betray you by lifting your head to chase his lips.
You finally let out a defeated sigh, letting the corners of your mouth lift to a lazy smile. “Thank you.”
“At your disposal,” he mutters back with slight amusement and you open your eyes again to look at him. God, he’s beautiful.
“Are you,” you dare to ask, earnest in your eyes, “at my disposal…?”
“It would be an honour.”
“Likewise.”
“That is more than I’ve ever had before.”
“The honour?”
He nods. And then leans in, his mouth brushing your ear as your eyes flutter closed again, goosebumps rising over your skin. “I will bow for you any day,” he breathes softly, “my queen.”

So… saying Dove is a little antsy to find Wukong and get out of Red Boy's cave may be an understatement.
With many of Red Boy's men injured, it takes about a full day to clear the rubble blocking the entrance. Having nothing to do but wait only drives Dove mad with worry. The second enough is cleared for her to leave, she says goodbye to Red Boy and goes. They do have a little talk first about maybe finding different methods to controlling the Samadhi Fire, or at the very least controlling his temper so something like this doesn't happen again.
She'd stay to help him if she could, but in the moment, all she can think about is finding out what happened to Sun Wukong.
Dove Masterlist:
Oh
There’s a space through the blockage. Too small for a person but just enough for your dove form, and that’s all you need. With nothing else keeping you here, you make your way to the entrance, Red Boy following from behind.
“Take care, Red Boy.” You give the boy a smile once you reach the entrance.
The kid doesn’t look up at you, his eyes focused on the ground in front of his feet. “Are you sure you can’t stay?”
A quiet huff of air escapes from your lips, strings pull at your heart as you watch the boy. If only you do more for him, but that just isn’t possible. You can’t put off returning to your friends any longer, and you have to figure out what happened to Sun Wukong. The thought of having Red Boy join you did cross your mind, he certainly would be helpful if he could learn to control the Samadhi Fire. But if you’re able to find Wukong and others, there’s no way they would want him to join. Not after, well, everything.
Still, he needs better guidance than what is here for him in this cave. You just aren’t able to be the one to do it. “My friends are waiting, and I need to know what happened to Sun Wukong.” You crouch down and rest a hand on his shoulder. “I’m sorry you had to go through that fight, try to take it easy from now on, okay? Try putting an end to all that eating-people thing.”
“…I’ll think about it.” He groans. A little worrying, but you feel as though that’s as good of an answer as you’re going to get.
Standing back up, you pat the boy on the head, ruffling his hair a bit. “Goodbye, Red Boy.”
He grunts in response, and with that, you take flight and squeeze through the opening amidst the rubble. The land before you once you emerge from the cave is a depressing sight. The water seems to have gone down a bit, but the ground alongside it is a muddy mess. Forgotten arrows and blood-stained weapons stick out from the ground and mountainside, scattered across the battlefield. Some trees have fallen over, others that still stand have burnt branches and scorched trunks.
You don’t spend much time taking in the aftermath of the battle, determined to get moving as quickly as possible. Sun Wukong must have drifted downstream, so that’s where you have to go. With any luck, you might run into the rest of the pilgrims on your search. This is the same direction Tripitaka went to find Pigsy and Sandy, after all.
Staying close to the river, the trek down the mountain is quiet, oddly so. Not a single animal crosses your path, there are no birds in the sky nor is there a single buzz of an insect. It might have worried you if not for your thoughts focused on one thing and one thing only.
Your eyes constantly scope out the surrounding area for hours, looking for any trace of Sun Wukong. It’s like you can still see him falling into the river, that moment playing in your mind over and over. Never did you think you’d ever see him like that, like he could actually be… no, he isn’t.
Come on, this is Sun Wukong you’re thinking about. He’s the Monkey King, Great Sage Equal to Heaven! Maybe that hit only surprised him. After all, nothing can hurt him. At least, not physically. You hope so.
Dammit! Your thoughts are getting the better of you. How can they not? If Wukong really was okay, why haven’t you seen him? Why didn’t he get out of the water? The thought of finding his body washed up along the riverbed sends a shiver down your spine. What if he’s unresponsive? If you hold him up only for him to slump back like dead weight? If you try and feel for a pulse–
Before you can spiral any further, an odd scent disrupts your thoughts. Why… Why can you smell saltwater?
The ground begins to shake, and you quickly take dove form and fly up to a nearby tree. The roar of the river grows louder, even more so than during the thunderstorm. It’s coming from uphill, and when you look back, you see it isn’t the river growing louder.
A tidal wave crashes down the mountain, a massive wall of water falling downhill towards you. Smaller trees are knocked down by the rolling force and you quickly take off to a higher vantage point in the sky. The mass of water rushes past, drowning the surrounding land and rising exponentially.
Where did all of this come from? It isn’t slowing down, if anything, more water is coming, but the question of its origin eludes you. It smells like ocean water, but how did it get here? It’s encompassing the mountain at an impossible rate, the trees that still stand barely have a moment left in the air before the water rises to swallow them completely.
Damn, how are you meant to find anyone in this?! Who could be doing this? Did the dragon king’s army return? But they couldn’t have made it rain saltwater, there isn’t even any rain clouds overhead! But then who could be responsible? Who could turn an entire mountain into an ocean?
…Wait a moment.
You look out over the water, a hint of nostalgia flashing through your mind. It is almost like the Southern Sea, by Potalaka Mountain. It couldn’t be… surely, not.
As if you had the capacity to take in any more sudden events, a boy’s scream pierces through the sky. Was that Red Boy? You look out in the direction of the cry and notice three figures in the distance where you came from, by Red Boy’s cave. One of them is on a strange mass, the other two hovering just above on some kind of platform.
You fly over, as fast as you can. What could have happened now?! When you get closer, you’re able to recognise the figures and realise– oh, shit.
The figure sitting on the mass is Red Boy, and the thing he’s sitting on is a collection of swords??? How does that even happen?! What surprises you even more are the two figures in front of him on a lotus platform. Your fellow disciple, Moksa, and Guan Yin herself.
All one thousand of her arms are revealed, her gaze cold as she narrows her eyes at the demon boy before her. You’ve rarely seen that look from her, brows pinched together and her glare sharp enough to pierce metal. You only ever saw that expression when you got into serious trouble as a child.
She holds five golden bands up into the air before sending them towards Red Boy. Four bands fly to his wrists and ankles with the last one falling around his neck. “Listen to me well, child. Under normal circumstances, I would have given you the opportunity to surrender yourself without the constriction of the golden bands. However, you have made a mistake. Have your men release my disciple and I may spare you.”
Shit shit shit shit–
Pushing yourself to go faster, you fly towards the three to disarm the situation. You don’t have to get much closer before your master raises her head up and turns in your direction, Moksa quickly doing the same. “Squab?” She calls out to you as you approach.
Once you’re close enough, two of her arms pull you close into a tight embrace. “Thank goodness you’re safe, my child. Are you hurt?” She loosens her grip a bit once you change back to your human form and stand on the platform with her, but more of her smothering hands begin checking your face and arms, focusing on the wrappings on your arm while you try to speak.
“No– I mean, a little, but it’s alright! I’m okay.” You quickly pull your arm back, but before you can say much else, she wraps you in another hug.
“I was told what happened, I came as soon as I could.” She explains, finally letting you go and giving you the chance to breathe, her arms slowly fading with the reassurance of your safety.
With her check-up over with, you look back to the demon child sitting on the mass of swords. “Please, let Red Boy go. I have already resolved the problem, he let me leave without issue.”
Moksa shoots you a surprised look. “You did?”
“Yes!” Red Boy shouts out on your behalf, the poor boy on the verge of tears.
Guan Yin looks over to the demon child, and the swords vanish in an instant. Red Boy manages to catch himself with his fire cloud, quickly shooting your fellow disciple and master an irritated look while Moksa steps closer to you to give you a hug. “You had us worried, Sister. We were told that you were able to negotiate the freedom of the Tang Monk, but you were still trapped in the demon’s cave.” He explains with a frown, and you mirror the look. Who could have told them that?
“She isn’t in there!” Your head whips back when you hear his voice.
He’s there, crouched on his somersault cloud and looking back in the direction of the cave as he flies forward. “I went back to the brat’s home, but–”
He isn’t able to finish before you jump to him, tackling him into a hug. “Wukong!”
“WoOAHH–!” He lets out a shout as he loses his balance and falls back, sending the two of you crashing into the sea below.
The splash of salt water isn’t enough for you to let go, not until you notice your friend sinking deeper into the water like a rock. A hand grabs onto the back of your shirt as well as Wukong’s, Moksa pulling the two of you out of the water.
Wukong is quick to jump back onto his cloud, barely shaking off the water before taking you out of Moksa’s arms. “Dove, you’re okay!”
“Are you?!” You hold his arms in your own. He looks a little beat. From what’s exposed of his chest, you can see wrappings that go around his chest and back. “I saw you fall in the fight but you didn’t surface! I know you’re immortal but I thought you might have– I thought that…”
You pull him close, holding him tight in your arms. You let your head rest on his shoulder, that faint scent of peaches more comforting than you ever thought it could be. “You scared me.”
He’s quiet for a moment, stiff before returning the embrace. “You’re one to talk.” He chuckles, one arm wrapping around your back while the other cradles the back of your head, his fingers tangling in your hair.
“Usually, when it’s just Master that’s been taken, I can handle things with just my brothers and you.” He mumbles, his voice laced with a hint of annoyance. “I had to bring an entire army and a bodhisattva for this! You are exhausting to rescue.”
“Me?! I negotiated Tripitaka’s freedom and my own after your first fight!” You release him from your hold with a laugh. To think you even spent so long worrying about this stupid monkey. “ You’re exhausted? I’ve been following the river for hours, terrified at the thought of finding your corpse washed up on its banks!”
“That doesn’t make any sense, I can’t die!” He scoffs, rolling his eyes at the thought.
“Explain all this, then!” You take the idiot by his lapels and pull his shirt down a bit to expose the wrappings, how badly was he hurt when he got hit??
You reach out to turn him around and check his back when he lets out a hiss. You retract your hand when he pulls back and shoots you with a look. “Sorry.”
“Wow, Sister, leave the injured man alone. Or at least wait for us to leave.” Moksa scolds with a smirk, and it only hits you now that you have an audience watching you pull your friend’s shirt down.
Guan Yin laughs softly under her breath, clearly amused despite your face growing more and more red. “I see that you really are alright.”
You nod, turning to face the bodhisattva while Wukong fixes his shirt. “Yes, Master. I apologise for any worry I may have caused with my absence.”
“Miss, you have a lot of friends with very violent tendencies.” Red Boy frowns, his arms crossed.
Before you can respond, Wukong put an arm over you and gives the boy a glare. “Says the one who was planning on eating her.”
“I didn’t want to eat her, just your master.” Red Boy scoffs. “I’m not so terrible as to do harm to the people that are nice to me.”
“Yeah, because locking them up is so much better.” Wukong bites back. “You’re lucky I didn’t swat you halfway across the continent!”
The boy laughs. “Like you could! Remind me, simian, who was the one that lost both fights?”
“You mean after you pulled those dirty tricks with the fire?!” He sneers, his cloud moving the two of you closer to the boy before you pull his arm back.
“Okay! Let’s all take a breath.” You hum, giving your friend a smile. “I think it’s about time we got back to the others, yeah?” Wukong looks over to you as you speak, the anger on his face receding before giving the demon boy one last glare.
“Yeah, you’re right.” When he looks back at you, he returns your smile.
Your master hums. “Give your companions my regards, I’m afraid I will have to stay back.” She glances over to Red Boy, who shrinks back a bit under her gaze. “There are some things I would like to discuss before returning home.”
With that, Sun Wukong scoops you into his arms. You let out a bit of a surprised noise when he does, and he takes off before you’re able to say a word. Hopefully, your master goes easy on the boy.
Soon it’s just you and Wukong soaring through the new sea, and you give the demon a worried frown. “Here, I can change back into a dove–”
“No, it’s alright.” He grunts, his eyes facing towards the horizon.
Your brows furrow, discomfort itching at your limbs. “But you’re hurt, I don’t want you to strain yourself.”
“Ha!” He grins, shaking his head as though you said something amusing. “I can still lift my staff just fine, and it weighs several tons more than you ever could.” Wukong looks down to you, noticing the worry on your face and frowning. He hums a bit as he looks back up, silence stretching for only a moment before he continues.
“I just… it’s been a long couple of days, and I want to.” He admits. “You’ve had me worried sick and, I don’t know– I feel better like this. Is that okay with you?”
Wukong looks back down to you, his eyes almost… you’re not sure what to call it. The look he shares with you, it’s soft, gentle. You’re taken aback a little by the sincerity in his voice, and even though you feel an immense relief to see him safe– to see him alive– you still feel your heart quicken its pace the longer you share this look with him. Perhaps it was because you haven’t had a peaceful moment with him in the last two days or so, but his red and golden eyes stun you in the moment. Those golden irises, they’ve always taken you a little by surprise.
Eventually, you remember he asked you a question, and turn away into his shoulder in hopes to hide the flushed red growing over your face. You’re not even sure why you can feel any heat in your cheeks. “Sure, Peaches, I don’t mind.”
“Peaches?” Your eyes go wide as he echoes the nickname.
Now you have a reason for your face turning red. “I mean, you are what you eat.” You mumble, as though any sort of reasoning could make this any less embarrassing. You didn’t mean to say any of that out loud! Gah, what is going on with you?!
He laughs a bit, clearly amused. “No, I like it! You’re right, I am what I eat.” His chuckle rumbles through his chest, and oddly enough, you can feel his heartbeat become a little faster. “Does this mean I get to call you Love-Do–”
“No.”
His laughter fills the air, and you can’t help but smile a little when you hear it. Knowing he’s safe, that he’s with you now, it feels as though a weight has lifted. You’ve never felt so afraid for him before, have such panic rush through you over the thought that he was in genuine danger. Hearing his laughter, you can’t help but feel this sense of relief, of joy.
Wukong sighs, and you feel his hold tighten just slightly. “I’m glad you’re safe, Dove.”
Your smile refusing to fade, you tuck your head into the crook of his neck and sigh. The scent of peaches is so calming. “I’m glad you’re safe too, Peaches.”
Sun Wukong giggles, and you grin. He sounds like he really likes that nickname, huh? Maybe it wouldn’t be so embarrassing to use it more, if it got that sort of reaction from him. Maybe not in front of the others, though.
~~~~
She called him Peaches. It’s… it’s cute. Sun Wukong didn’t expect that from her, though her embarrassment is making it all the better. With the stress of these past days, he nearly forgot how much he loves it when she gets all flustered like that. It’s just… he can’t think of any other way to describe it other than cute.
The sage can feel his heart racing but he tries his best to ignore it and play it cool. Damn, how does she do it? When she was gone, he was beyond stressed, and having her in his arms is so calming, yet his heart is going a mile a minute. How does she do this to him?
She’s the only one who ever can. It felt like some sort of magic, but not her usual magic. Not her gift, it was… it was something else. That ‘something else’ has been bugging the sage for some time now. He’s not sure when it started, but whenever he’s able to see that smile, when he caught a glimpse of her in the heat of battle– sometimes when she was the way she is now, all flustered– that something else prods at him.
Wukong looks down at her again, safe in his arms. He could stay like this forever, if he could. Her warmth encapsulates him, making his injury nothing more than a faded memory. It feels so right, so perfect, having Dove in his arms.
Her calming aura and that something else continues to pick away at him. It makes him feel light, and when it’s there he can’t help but smile and tighten his hold slightly. He doesn’t want this to slip away. What a nice feeling, this something else. “I’m glad you’re safe, Dove.”
She smiles before nuzzling her head into his neck, and the action is enough for Wukong to believe his heart might burst from his chest. He feels his face flush as she lets out a little sigh of content. The small sound is enough to make his chest constrict. “I’m glad you’re safe too, Peaches.”
The giggle that comes from him is completely involuntary, as though it’s an automatic reaction to her name for him. This woman… That something else, it’s almost eating away at him.
That something… else…
Oh. Oh, wait.
No… wait, no… oh.
Oh.
Night seemed to pass quickly, and it felt as though you had just closed your eyes when they opened again. You tried to orient yourself to the unfamiliar wooden wall in front of you. Stretching slightly, your movements caused Kai to grumble and bury his face deeper into the pillow, one arm stretched lazily over you, tightening you into him.
You heard Kai’s father’s bed creak, followed by the thud of his feet hitting the floor before he rose and quietly opened and closed the door of the room. You flipped onto your side to look at Kai, or more accurately, the side of his head, which was thoroughly tousled from his night of sleep. “We need to get up,” you whispered, running your hand down the side of his face. Kai merely grumbled, pulling the blanket up higher around his chin. You sat up, inching your way to the end of the bed and tugging on your pants before rising to your feet. The wood was cold beneath your toes as you stretched.
You pulled on the wool sweater you had lying around and the socks you had shoved into the side of the bed during the night, brushing your fingers through your hair, trying to comb out the knots. All the while, you snuck glances at Kai, who lay in bed face down, his breath rising and falling softly. As you braided your locks and tossed them over your shoulder, you’d had enough of sleeping beauty. You grabbed the corners of the blankets near the end and, with a mighty heave, ripped the warmth from Kai, who immediately curled into himself, wearing nothing but his undergarments and undershirt. He groaned, “No,” as he tried to shield himself from the cold.
You smiled, chuckling slightly at how much he sounded like a child, and dropped the blanket to the ground. Walking to the side of the bed, you leaned over him, resting your hands on his arms as you shook him. “Get up!” Kai merely moaned in response. “I’m hungry!” You continued to shake him until Kai opened one of his eyes, glancing up at you with a scowl.
“My head hurts like a bitch,” he said, shutting his eyes again.
You let go of his arm, huffing slightly as you settled into the armchair, pulling on your boots and lacing them. “Do you remember last night when you came in and insisted that you hadn’t had too much to drink?”
Kai sat up slightly, his face a bit pale as he rubbed his eyes with the base of his palms. “Mildly,” he responded.
You clapped your hands on your thighs as you rose, walking over to him again. He looked up at your face, squinting in the dimly lit room. “Do you remember trying to go to sleep in your coat?”
Kai’s brows furrowed slightly. “Not at all,” he replied.
You laughed, pressing your shins into the mattress as you leaned forward, your face close to Kai’s as you pressed a kiss to his forehead. He smiled, his eyes shut as he wrapped his arms around your waist, the side of his face resting against your stomach as you ran your hands through his wavy hair. You pressed another kiss to the crown of his head as he loosened his grip on your waist. “I need to get up,” he said. “Dad’ll skin me if we’re late setting up.”
As though summoned by the mention of his name, Kai’s father appeared back in the room, dressed for the day. For the first time since you’d known him, it looked as though he’d washed his face and brushed his hair. He flashed you a smile before telling you and Kai that he would be heading down to the stable to get the cart and that you should meet him at the stand within the next half hour. Kai, hopping on one foot while trying to force the other into his pants, agreed, and his father turned and left. As soon as the door shut, Kai lost his balance, falling to the floor with a thunk as you laughed at him. He looked up at you through his hair. “Stop laughing, I’m ill!” he joked.
You picked up the blanket you had discarded at the end of the bed, throwing it back over the mattress. “I have no sympathy. You did it to yourself.”
Kai merely rolled his eyes as he stood. In just his undershirt and pants, you could still make out the faint muscles underneath it all. He wasn’t strikingly gorgeous, with his muddy brown hair and thin frame, but his smile and eyes caught your heart in your throat, and you felt a sense of pride walking alongside him, his hand wrapped in yours. Kai searched the floor for his discarded shirt, and as he did, you came from behind him and wrapped your arms around his midsection, nuzzling your nose into his shirt.
“Hi?” he asked, peering over his shoulder at you.
You smiled up at him. “Carry on,” you urged.
Kai continued bending down and standing up as he dug through his bag. Each time he did, your feet left the floor for a moment and dropped back down. After the third time, you realized he might have been doing it on purpose. You let out a light giggle, and then, without warning, Kai leaned so far forward his fingers grazed the ground as he arched his back, a playful growl emerging from his throat. You squeaked out a faint cry as your feet left the floor and dangled, your face pointing toward the ground as Kai laughed. “Put me down! Put me down!” you yelled, “I’m serious, Kai!” although your serious tone was masked with laughter.
Kai pushed his hands up to your hips as he leaned farther forward, throwing you from his back so you flipped over top of him and onto the bed, a fit of laughter erupting from you as you smacked down onto the mattress. Kai quickly hopped onto the bed next to you, straddling you under his hips as you giggled out, his weight pushing the air from your stomach as you laughed. Kai’s smile peered down at you as you settled. “We have to go!” you urged.
“I have a beautiful female pinned underneath me. I think I can stay here for a few minutes,” he smiled back at you, and you rolled your eyes.
“Wouldn't you rather get some breakfast instead?” you teased.
Kai pretended to ponder the question, tapping his chin thoughtfully. “Hmm, beautiful female or food… It’s a tough choice.”
You smacked his shoulder playfully. “Food, obviously.”
Kai leaned in, his lips meeting yours in a gentle, lingering kiss. His mouth carried a faint taste of cranberry and icing sugar, inviting and comforting against yours. As you responded, he braced himself with his arms on either side of your shoulders, his chest pressing against yours. Your arms lazily wrapped around him, pulling him closer as he peppered your cheek and neck with small kisses.
A rosy warmth spread through you, cheeks flushing with contentment as you melted into his touch. Kai's faint moan resonated against your skin as he delicately traced your collarbone with his lips, eliciting a gasp from deep within you. His weight pressed into you, his arms bending to explore, one hand trailing down your side, fingertips teasing your hips.
His touch sent shivers down your spine, goosebumps rising on your skin in the chilly morning air. His fingers ventured beneath your clothing, tracing patterns against your skin as he returned his kisses to your mouth. But your focus wavered as he traced higher, barely grazing the soft flesh of your rib cage, pausing just below your breast.
With a slow, deliberate movement, he curled his hand around your ribs, his fingers flexing against your back as you yearned for more. A whimper escaped your lips, earning a smile and a soft laugh from Kai as he continued his exploration. His warm hand slid under your undergarments, pressing against your breast as he kneaded the soft flesh beneath his palm.
You couldn't help but moan in response, the sensation sending waves of pleasure through you. It was the first time he had touched you this intimately, after months of restraint, and you melted into the newfound feeling blooming in your core. Your kiss deepened, fingers gripping into his shirt and hair as he continued to explore, teasing your nipple with a gentle pinch that caused your legs to instinctively curl around him.
Without hesitation, your fingers trailed along the hem of Kai's undershirt, gradually pulling it free from his pants. As the fabric lifted, exposing the smooth skin of his lower back, you reached around to the front, your hand finding Kai's growing arousal. An almost primal growl escaped him, and you glanced up to find him hovering above you, lips parted in anticipation as you stroked him.
"F-fuck," he breathed out, his grip on your breast tightening momentarily before he refocused, his fingers kneading circles as you continued your ministrations. He sucked his lower lip between his teeth before leaning back down to claim your lips in a hungry kiss.
Your palm pressed firmly against him as Kai's touch grew more commanding, trailing from your breast down your stomach to your waist. With a sense of urgency, he untied the front of your pants, both of you shifting to create more space. His hand moved swiftly, slipping under the outer clothing and over your underwear, a soft moan escaping him at the wetness already pooling between your thighs.
In response, you echoed his pleasure-laden moan, feeling his cock twitch slightly against your touch, as though he was already on the brink just from the warmth of your core. His fingers grinding into the wetness, exploring as he continued to kiss you, the once precise kisses now becoming sloppy and forgotten as you both reveled in the intoxicating sensation of each other's gentle caresses.
Just as your hand hovered near the knot of his trousers, you both froze at the sound of the bell outside, tolling six times. With a sigh of resignation, Kai's eyes opened, his head dropping onto your chest. "We really need to go," he whispered.
Reluctantly, you withdrew your hand as Kai rolled off you, a playful smile flickering across his lips as he retrieved his shirt, adjusting his attire while you straightened out your clothes and tousled hair. Slipping on your coat, you headed for the door, Kai quickly following suit, hopping into his boots.
With one hand on the doorknob, Kai turned you around, his grip on your shoulder guiding you until your back met the door with a soft thud. He kissed you deeply, an intensity and hunger sparking between you that hadn't been felt in a long while. When he pulled back, your eyes fluttered open.
"We aren't done here," he murmured, his voice filled with promise. "Just hold on to that feeling."
You playfully bit your lip. "It's going to make this day so much more challenging now," you teased, your hand trailing down to his pants again, eliciting a soft moan from Kai.
Just as he leaned in for another kiss, you swung open the door, causing Kai to stumble forward with a shout. Laughter bubbled up from within you as he regained his balance, shooting you a playful glare. "You know what? Scratch that. Forget I said anything. I just want to be friends," he joked.
Wiping tears from your eyes and finally standing after doubling over in laughter, you were met with Kai's adoring gaze. Softly, you kissed his cheek, intertwining your fingers with his as you descended the stairs of the inn and stepped out into the crisp morning air of the Winter Solstice Market.
________________________________________________________
As Velaris slowly awoke to the holiday cheer, vendors bustled to and fro, preparing their stands for the influx of last-minute shoppers. You and Kai made your way toward the booth, stopping at a bakery just raising its curtains to buy a cup of tea for the two of you to share and a cranberry croissant, which Kai let you have most of. When you finally arrived at the booth, his father was already unloading the carvings and placing them on the table. Kai immediately jumped in to help, while you stood back, watching the two of them. This was a routine for them—twice a year, every year, for the last hundred and twenty years. You were content to stand back and watch as Kai silently handed his father the carvings.
The booth was filled with all sorts of handmade items: animals, landscapes, bowls, spoons, forks, cutting boards, all crafted throughout the year whenever his father had spare time and lumber. They were beautiful and delicate, a stark contrast to the hands of the lumber workers, which were often calloused, cut, and large. These carvings required patience and the fine movements of a skilled craftsman. By the time they were finished unloading, most of the market had been set up. You took a few moments to stroll between booths, investigating what other vendors were selling. Some sold rare stones and gems, others paintings, drawings, or pottery, and some sold herbal medicines found only in other Courts, while others offered homemade pastries or pastas.
Everyone seemed to know each other, as the same vendors had been coming here for centuries, much like Kai’s family. Kai wasted no time in introducing you to each and every person. They fawned over you as Kai held your hand, swooning over how adorable the two of you were together and expressing their happiness to see Kai finally with someone. Kai’s father, ever the stoic introvert, stuck to the stand, chatting with a few other burly men about this or that. Meanwhile, you and Kai were out socializing. Kai took much more after his mother, always making time to chat with those around him, always with a compliment, and seeming to know the more intimate details of their lives, checking in about elderly relatives or asking after children.
When the clock tower finally rang out, announcing it was nine in the morning, Kai brought you back to the stand and informed you that you would be helping with transactions, writing down profits, and recording trades if there was a barter. With a wink, he also added, “Plus, you’re good advertising.” You rolled your eyes at that statement.
As fae from all walks of life rolled into the market in their solstice best, you couldn’t help but track the mothers walking hand in hand with their children, who pointed in awe at the many sights and sounds before them. Fathers hoisted their children onto their shoulders to get them out of the crush of people, and small babes wrapped in swaddling blankets cooed and babbled over their mothers' adoring faces. You tried to picture yourself here as a child, though no memory arose from it.
A small girl approached the stand, barely able to peek over the edge of the table as she surveyed the carvings. Her curly brown hair was pulled back with a dark red headband, exposing her delicate alabaster skin and rosy cheeks. You smiled down at her as she looked at the items.
“Mama, Mama, look!” the little girl cried out. Her mother, with a babe strapped to her chest, approached from the neighboring booth. The girl's mother looked much like her, with the same curly hair, though her face was slightly more angular. She placed one hand delicately on the back of the babe’s head, which was covered in a dark red hat. “What do you see, darling?”
“It’s a horsey!” the little girl pointed. It was indeed a carving of one of the lumber horses, mid-gait.
“It is!” The mother’s voice was light and excited as she looked to you and smiled. “It’s a big horse.”
“I wanna play with it,” the little girl reached forwards for the statue, and her mother gently pulled her back, crouching down so her forest green dress and matching coat swayed just above the ground.
“No, no, honey,” she said softly, “These aren’t toys. These are very fragile.”
The little girl’s face dropped slightly as she looked to her mother, her large blue eyes seeming to grow wider. “But... but I have horses at home.”
The mother nodded, the babe fussing slightly as she ran her hand down their back to soothe them. “I know, but those are toy horses. Those ones don’t break, and if you play with these too much they might.” The little girl looked back at the statue on the table and then back to her mother. “So we can look at this horse, but we can’t play with it.”
The little girl frowned, gazing longingly at the horse.
Seeming to overhear the interaction, Kai moved in next to you and glanced between the horse and the girl. He placed his hand on your lower back to scoot you forward as he crossed behind you, grabbing the horse on the way and coming out to the front of the booth. He crouched down next to the girl, who shied slightly away from him.
“You know,” Kai said gently, “your mom is right, a lot of these things are really fragile.” The little girl scanned his face. “But this horse is very strong.” He seemed to weigh it in his hand. “My dad made this to look like my horse, Ingrid, who’s really big and super strong.” The little girl took a tentative step towards him. “So I think,” Kai continued, “that if you just play with her a little more carefully, she could be a good addition to your herd.” Kai smiled at her and handed her the horse.
The little girl beamed in delight as she took it from him, turning back to her mother, who gave Kai a soft, appreciative smile. “How much do I owe you?” she asked as the little girl squeezed the horse to her chest.
Kai stood, shaking his head and hand, “Nothing.”
The mother stopped, pulling her purse around from her side as she bounced the babe in the carrier, “No, I have to give you something.”
Kai slipped back behind the stall and just repeated, “Don’t worry about it. Consider it a solstice gift!”
The mother nodded and smiled, asking the little girl to thank him. She looked up at him, and with a grin revealing a missing front tooth, she said, “Thank you!” prolonging ‘you’, before her mother beckoned her to move on.
Kai continued to smile and waved them off before turning to you and saying, “Don’t tell my dad I did that.”
You looked over Kai’s shoulder to where his father was speaking with another craftsman, seemingly unaware of what took place. You simply crossed your fingers over your lips, feigning locking them, and chucked the imaginary key away. Kai chuckled, ruffling his tousled hair, and gave you a playful wink.
The market continued to bustle with life as more patrons wandered through the tight aisles. Sylvan even made his way through, stopping to chat with Kai about last night’s antics. He revealed that Kai had, in fact, had more drinks than he had ever seen him have before and that it took them an extra hour to get back to the inn because Kai kept going down the wrong streets. Sylvan took particular joy in telling you that the entire night, Kai only talked about you and how “pretty your hair was,” and how “nice your smile was.” Even as Kai tried to silence him, Sylvan noted that Kai seemed particularly interested in how nice and white your teeth were, which made you blush. Kai merely beckoned Sylvan to go find someone else to bother. His father shook his head and rolled his eyes.
The booth was doing so well, in fact, that Kai’s father asked you to return to the stable to grab the rest of the boxes of figures from the cart and bring them back to finish out the day. You hurriedly made your way down towards the entrance of the city, pushing open the door of the barn and pulling boxes off the cart, even stopping to stroke Lila for a moment. You stacked the boxes on top of one another and headed back out the door, pushing it open with your back.
Suddenly, you heard a familiar voice. “Hello, my love.” The boxes fell from your grasp as you turned to see the imposing stature of your mate, his shadow towering over you and sending a freezing cold chill down your spine.
The world seemed to narrow to just the two of you. His piercing gaze locked onto you, and the barn's light seemed to dim as though the very air grew colder with his presence. Your heart pounded in your chest, a mix of fear and disbelief rendering you speechless. The warm, bustling market felt a million miles away as you faced the reality you had been running from.
[summary] naoya pulls you aside for a quick goodbye before he leaves for a mission.
[cws] male reader -> servant reader (power imbalance). naoya calls your hole a pussy.
Tumblr media
“Keep your voice down. I don’t need one of those disgraces I call brothers walking in.”
You heed Naoya’s words, your hand raising to cover your mouth as he quickly undoes your hakama. The repercussions of one of his family members finding you, his father’s lowly attendant, and him together in such a state of undress would be rather…explosive.
The Zenin clan was very traditional, in all senses of the word. Two unmarried parties acting improperly was strictly forbidden, doubly so if both parties were of the same sex. It was a dangerous game that you had been forced to play, and you just hoped that you didn’t get a bad ending.
You shiver once all of your clothing is strewn about Naoya’s room, leaving you exposed as you cower in front of him, and his face is unreadable as he takes you in. His eyes start at your face, darting from one feature to the next, and then it’s dropping, one hand lifting to follow the path of his eyes.
His fingers, smooth and soft from a pampered upbringing, trail down your chest, blunt nails scraping against a flat nipple that quickly hardens, a low gasp leaving you at the sensation. “I’ll be leaving on a mission tonight.” His voice is low as he speaks, hand now between your legs as he cups your soft cock and balls, the appendage quickly hardening due to his ministrations. “I’ll be absent for a few days, maybe a week.”
The hand that had been toying with your cock moves to rest at your hip, and you stifle a noise of complaint as he circles around you, hand sliding from your hip to your ass. His fingers sink into the flesh, and you moan into your hand when he presses himself flush against your back, other hand moving back to your cock. “Will you miss me?”
“Yes, Master Naoya.” You mumble into your palm.
The break from him, along with the possibility of being caught with him, will bring you a few moments peace, and you wouldn’t mind it if his mission took longer than he was currently telling you.
His fingers wrap around your cock in reward, his grip tight and firm as he quickly strokes you off, his chin resting on your shoulder as he watches the way your hips involuntarily buck into his hand.
His fingers prod at your hole, and he hums at the feel of the glass plug that he had stuffed you with a mere two hours ago. He pushes on it, forcing a moan from your lips as your back arches, and then his fingers are closing around the flared base and slowly pulling it out.
“Then I suppose I’ll give you something to tide you over.” He speaks as if he’s doing you a favor, as if you had been the one to abruptly pull him from his duties and drag him into an empty room, and yet, you find your cock jumping at the thought.
Your rim holds on tight the plug, and Naoya tsks. “Greedy boy.” He pulls hard, and your voice is loud as you groan, your other hand coming up to slap over your mouth. He pulls his hips back enough to free himself from his pants, and then his hands are switching positions, the one slick with your pre-cum moving to slick his cock up. “How do you want it?” His voice is gruff and heavy with lust.
He doesn’t often let you pick the position he takes you in, rather moving you however he sees fit, with no regard for your comfortability.
He gives you two more pumps, thumb mashing down against your leaky tip, before he’s nudging you forward on shaky legs. Not wanting to keep him waiting, as well as desperately needing something to replicate that stuffed feeling from before, you hastily lower yourself down to your knees and elbows. You look at him over your shoulder, your eyes falling on the way he’s got his pants pushed down to the middle of his thighs, hand quickly stroking at his cock, the tanned skin moving up and down as he goes, and you moan at the sight, lashes fluttering and lids lowering.
He’s on you quicker than you can blink, heavy cock pushing in deep and stretching you out wide. You keen, back arching and forehead thumping against the floor as he batters against your prostate, and his name leaves your mouth in a cry as he immediately sets a brutal pace.
The sound of skin against skin is unmistakable, and he groans and hisses loudly above you despite his earlier warning to be quiet. His balls, fat and round, slap against your perineum with each thrust, and your toes curl, fingers curling into your palm as shivers continuously race up and down your spine.
“This -hah- greedy pussy always takes me so well—”
“—Naoya-sama!” Your ears burn at his words, and his hands lock around your waist, the fat of your ass smacking his groin with every plunge of his cock inside your hole.
“Didn’t I tell you to be quiet?” His hand comes down hard against your ass, the flesh shaking and burning under his palm, and you whine out a moan, your cock twitching as spurts of cum dirty his bedroom floor. His hand quickly moves around to your cock, and he snickers at the wetness he feels, fingers squeezing at your balls as he makes sure to get every last drop out.
He follows shortly after, chest pressed to your back and pants sounding in your ear as he comes, cock seeming to swell impossibly bigger as warm spurts of cum fill you to the brim. Before you can collapse under his weight, he’s pushing himself up to his knees, one hand curled underneath your chin as he pulls you with him.
“Look at me,” your head turns, and his mouth mashes against your own, tongue forcing its way inside to rub alongside your own. The kiss is suffocating, as it always is, and you find yourself pulling back to breathe, only for him to drag you into another one, teeth painfully sinking into your lower lip before he’s pulling it into his mouth.
He finally parts from you, your lips puffy and sore from his ministrations, and he rasps out a laugh, soft cock slipping from your ass followed by the slow trickling of his cum. He stands to his feet as he fixes his clothing, and you sit on your knees with a bit of difficulty, heart still racing in your chest.
His collar has come out of place, and out of habit, you force yourself to stand and reach up to fix it for him. He watches you as you work, and your nose scrunches up when you feel warmth trailing down the back of your thigh. Your hands quickly tidy up the rest of his clothing, and he gives you a final once over before waving you off as he turns on his heel.
“Make sure you’re the first to greet me when I return.”
Hi hi!!! I’ve got an idea if you’re interested!!
So the reader is an avid literature fan, and they really love Poe’s novels!! One day they meet him and Poe is confronted with the prospect that….. maybe he doesn’t need to keep writing just to possibly stump Ranpo one day…. Maybe he’s already an incredible author deserving of praise,, :’)
^ if that makes sense lol, but I’m super excited to see where your blog goes anyway!! Following immediately <33
a fan?
It all started when he met a fan. A fan. Someone devoted to his work, someone who enjoyed and loved his writing. He could remember the day like it had just happened. The feeling of his cheeks growing warm, as the tips of his ears reddened with the praise he sought for every time he tried to stump Ranpo with one of his stories.
He also remembers the way he fumbled with his coat and undershirt as the person in front of him would gush and ramble about the different scenes he wrote, the different characters he poured his own attributes into, as well as the attributes he wished he had. He listened with shaky fingers and an anxious feeling bubbling in his chest as they brought up the dialogue he would spend his time reading aloud over and over again until it felt right.
It would be in his next novel, he wrote a character into the ongoing plot who reminded him of the devoted fan he had met out on a walk to gain inspiration.
And inspiration he found.
Inspiration he found in you.
Whenever he felt stumped with his hobby he went on a walk. Down the street, take a right, and pass by that cafe he was always too scared to go into because of how deadpanned the barista looked in the mornings. It was the same route he had met you. Every time he went out on one of his brainstorming walks, he hoped that the two of you would cross paths again.
And like fate intended, that would happen on a random Tuesday about a month later.
The air was fresh with summer approaching as the trees were green with branches full of leaves. A slight breeze flowed about the city, the only thing reminding Poe about his need for a summer wardrobe change soon, as it kept him just cool enough to enjoy his stroll. He walked with his head down, holding a leather-bound book in his hands as he watched his shoes land against the pavement with audible clicks.
“Karl would have loved this weather, it’s a shame he was napping when I left.” He spoke to no one in particular.
“Karl is your pet raccoon, right?”
“Yes, he’s-” His voice got caught in his throat.
He was too lost in his own musings to notice you were right next to him, about to enter the cafe he would usually pass on his walks, clad in a uniform he’d seen somewhere before. It was almost humorous how quickly his expression had gone from deadpanned, deep in thought, to a somewhat frightened look of ‘holy fucking shit’ in a matter of seconds.
He blinked owlishly at you as you just looked at him with a smile.
“Do you come here often?” You pointed at the cafe’s entrance, a crooked smile stretching across your lips as you tried to relieve the awkward tension.
“Uhm- No, not particularly.” Liar. Even though hes never entered the cafe, that doesn’t mean he hadn’t walked past it almost every day when the weather was nice enough for the past three weeks.
“The sugar cookies here are really nice.”
“O-Oh, really?”
“Yeah,” You looked at the cafe doors before turning back to him. “I’ll be considered “late” for my shift,” You made air quotes with your fingers. “If I don’t get in there in a few minutes.”
“Go ahead then, I’ll have to stop by sometime when I can…”
So that’s where he knew that uniform from. His gaze flew to the window as he bit his lip, avoiding eye contact with the deadpan barista who was definitely watching them through the glass. The uniform the barista wore behind the counter was the same as the one you were currently wearing. He looked back at you before speaking, his voice quiet with apprehension.
“Are you guys pet-friendly…?”
Once he had gotten confirmation that the cafe was pet-friendly, for service animals only, he rushed off with the promise of bringing Karl with him on his next visit.
It was the next day he walked down the once new path turned familiar with his animal companion in tow. The weather was much like the day before, minus the pleasant breeze. But the heat did not deter Poe as he briskly walked. His shoes hitting the concrete with a familiar clack. Excitement was rolling off of him in waves at the thought of being able to meet up with this devoted fan of his after waiting for a chance to do so for the past few weeks.
“How can I help you?” A monotone voice spoke.
He didn’t realize he was already in the cafe, standing at the counter, Karl on his shoulder, ready to say hello, only for the person at the front counter to not be you.
Instead, it was that blank-faced barista who was always off-putting to Poe whenever he walked by the big windows of the cafe. He could always feel their stare on him when he paced the sidewalks day by day. Only now, he could see the stare and was standing before them instead of walking past the glass.
Well fuck. That’s certainly a way to flip Poe’s switch from 'fine' to 'not fine'.
“Uhm…” He had to say something. Maybe order something? Yeah, that would be a great way to cover up his ignorance of his surroundings. Karl chirped on his shoulder as the raccoon’s tiny clawed hands patted his head. Poe watched in worry as the barista’s gaze went from himself to the raccoon on his shoulder.
“Please tell me that is a certified service animal.” The barista’s tone was unreadable as their eyes moved back to Poe’s.
“Oh- Y-Yes, he is certified. Let me just…” Poe dug around in his coat, unraveling a few yellow-tinted folded-up papers from the depths of his inside pockets. Unfolding the documents and turning them around for the barista to see. He pointed to a few different places on the papers, explaining how Karl is a 100% certified service animal. “He’s a psychiatric certified service animal for anxiety.”
“I didn’t know raccoons could do that.”
“Me neither…”
Thankfully, he managed not to embarrass himself further as he sat down with a warm drink that he didn’t remember the name of and a large sugar cookie. There had been other options of course, but you had recommended the sugar cookie for a reason right?
Karl had jumped from his shoulder and rested in his lap when he had sat down. Not wanting to disturb the raccoon peacefully resting in his lap, his gaze shifted about the interior of the cafe, his eyes scanning over the bright pops of color highlighting the various white tables. The turquoise accent wall behind the counter is adorned with diverse eccentric artwork. His focus was broken when the ring of the bells over the door alerted him.
And to his surprise, you had walked in.
While he was hoping to see you, he wasn’t expecting you to show up, assuming you had the day off when he was met with the other barista behind the counter instead of you. He watched as your head swiveled around, making you seem like you were looking for something- or perhaps, someone with how your face lit up when you saw him.
His assumption was further confirmed once you had started walking over to his table. His eyes followed you as you walked over, his head turning as you now stood in front of his table instead of behind him by the door.
“Is this seat taken?”
“No, not at all.” …
It took meeting a fan to realize something.
It took meeting a fan for him to realize that his novels impacted other people.
It took meeting a fan for him to realize, that maybe he didn’t need to write just to try and defeat Ranpo with another mystery novel.
Poe never even noticed his writing had even strayed from the mystery genre and played more with romance since writing in that new character about a month ago.
Authors Note: I actually cannot believe I managed to write all of those in one sitting. I genuinely think this is the first time I've been able to write over 1K words this easily. Whoever made it this far and is reading this, I need to know your thoughts on this.
I really loved writing this. My first time writing with Poe and while I was writing I decided to headcanon that Karl is a service animal because it makes sense. I hope I nailed his character and it isn't occ. There was something else I was gonna say but I cannot remember, it is 11:33 PM and I've worked on this for at least the past 2-3 hours and I gotta get up in the morning.
Comments and reblogs that tell me what you guys liked or little things that you noticed makes my day. My inbox is still open for recommendations, please check out my pinned post before you drop in though.
And that should have been that.
Joel’s new life in Jackson was busy. Contracting projects always picked up this time of year. Patrols got more eventful as the last of the snow melted. There was work to do, and he had Ellie to consider.
Ellie, his fifteen-year-old ward, the second daughter he didn’t know he needed until she was forced on him in a desperate time. Things with Ellie were complicated for many reasons, all of which they were trying to ignore. She vacillated between treating him like a father and pretending he didn’t exist with not a lot of in-between. She’d recently moved out of his house and into the garage, and he hoped the extra space would improve their relationship, but it was too soon to tell.
Accidentally fucking his patrol partner in a drunken stupor was low on his list of concerns.
He put the whole ordeal in the back of his mind.
Mostly.
He saw Charlie around, of course. It was hard to miss her flash of silver-white hair during town meetings or meals at the caf. He might get a nod or a smirk in passing, and that was fine. He might have even felt a glancing flush of heat creep up his neck when she smiled at him, and that was fine, too.
But then…things got weird.
She’d see him coming down the street and cross to the other side. She ducked her head and avoided his eyes whenever they crossed paths during patrol prep. She suddenly wasn’t around in the usual hangout spots–the Bison, the caf. Then she missed three patrol shifts in a row. When he asked Tommy about it, he just shrugged and said she’d called out sick.
It shouldn’t have bothered him. They’d agreed to pin it on drunken stupidity and move on, but maybe she’d changed her mind. Maybe she regretted it. Maybe she hated him.
And maybe that shouldn’t have mattered, but it did.
He should have let it go.
He’s eating with Ellie in the caf when he sees Charlie come in, stamping the mud off her boots. She gets halfway to the serving counter and then stops mid-stride, faltering. She turns abruptly and catches him staring–her eyes lock on Joel’s for an uncomfortable length of time, long enough for Ellie to notice and turn around.
Then her eyes grow wide and she ducks her head and makes a beeline for the door, leaving the caf in a rush. The whole thing takes just a few seconds.
Ellie turns back to look at him. “Dude, you okay?”
“Yeah…”
He’s still watching the door, waiting to see if Charlie will come back, but she doesn’t. After a moment’s hesitation, he gets up.
“I’ll…be right back,” he says faintly, leaving his tray and his confused kid behind.
He catches up with her down the street, startling her with a hand on her shoulder. She wheels around, eyes wide and…tired, he thinks. Anxious. Like she’s just barely holding herself together.
“What?” she snaps.
He opens his mouth, realizing a moment too late that he doesn’t know what to say. He gapes like a fish for a few miserable seconds before he finally settles on the truth.
“You’re avoidin’ me.”
“I’m not,” she says, crossing her arms and setting her jaw.
“Then lemme walk you home.”
Her lips flatten into a thin line. “I’m not going home.”
“Then walk me home,” he says quickly. “M’up this way.”
She considers this, then rolls her eyes and continues up the road toward Rancher Street.
“I’m not avoiding you, Joel,” she huffs.
“Then what was that back at the caf?”
“I…wasn’t hungry.”
“I haven’t seen you around. Tommy said you were sick.”
“I’m fine.”
They continue in silence, Charlie tucked into herself with her head down, him trying to make his dumb, slow brain cooperate and figure out how to get her to open up. The walk is over too quickly.
“This is me,” he says when they’re firmly planted in front of the house on Rancher Street. “Look, if I, uh, did somethin’–”
“You didn’t.”
“I just mean…we said–”
“I know what we said and that’s still the case,” she says, the words tumbling out in a rush. She shifts her weight from one foot to the other, agitated, almost…scared. “We said it wouldn’t be weird and it’s not, you’re just…making it that way.”
Her face screws up and she swallows hard; he can see the way her arms tighten around herself as she talks, pale fingers almost white with the ferocity of her grip.
His voice softens, unconsciously slipping into the tone he uses when Ellie’s having one of her nightmares. His hand twitches at his side, wanting to touch her, to console her, but he won’t.
“Charlie? What’s wrong?”
She closes her eyes and shakes her head slowly, then suddenly pushes past him, ducking off to the side of the house to vomit next to his garbage can. She heaves and spits and wipes her mouth with a soft fuck .
He moves toward her, reaches out a hand to steady her, but her next words freeze him in place.
“I’m pregnant.”
For one endless moment, this information doesn’t register. The words don’t make sense, echoing in his head until they’re reduced to nonsense syllables.
“You’re–that’s not–”
Charlie’s arms are folded over her chest, staring numbly at a spot on the ground near Joel’s feet.
“I thought you were…I thought you…couldn’t…I don’t–”
“You thought I couldn’t?”
“You’re just…we’re…older,” he finishes lamely.
She cocks her head, considering him from under long lashes. “How old do you think I am, Joel?”
Oh hell no. That’s a trap if he ever heard one. “M’not gonna answer that.”
“I’m thirty-six.”
“You’re–”
He feels his knees buckle. Christ, he’s old enough to be her fucking father. Sarah would be the same age if she’d lived–
Sarah.
He tries and fails miserably to make it look like his taking a seat on the porch steps is intentional.
Suddenly he’s twenty-two and having this exact conversation, parked in his parents’ beat-up station wagon in an empty lot in the middle of nowhere, Texas, the cute high school senior he’d met only a few months before riding shotgun with a plastic pee stick in her lap. His whole fucking life about to change, and now it’s happening again.
“Grayed early,” she says, absently touching her short silver locks, pulling him out of this painful reverie. “It’s hereditary.”
He swallows hard and grips the rough wood of the step under him, feels the prick of a splinter and doesn’t care. “You’re sure it’s mine?”
The acid look she gives him could melt steel.
“You’re the only person I’ve fucked in the last, oh, three years, so yeah. I’m pretty fucking sure.”
“Jesus Christ,” he moans softly, head swimming.
“It’s not like I asked for this, either,” she snaps.
A glimmer of bittersweet hope, then. Maybe she doesn’t want this. He sure as hell doesn’t want this. Maybe…
“What are you going to do about it?” he asks carefully, looking up at her from his spot on the steps.
This appears to give her pause, face suddenly pinched with something like grief.
“I don’t know.”
“What do you mean you don’t know?”
“It means I don’t fucking know. You followed me out here,” Charlie hisses. “I wasn’t even going to tell you, but then you fucking cornered me!”
He’s stunned into silence, stung by her venom. He knows what he’s supposed to say. He knows he should say it’s her choice, that he’ll support her no matter what. But fuck if he can make himself say the words.
He’s always been a terrible liar.
“Whatever,” Charlie says. “You don’t need to–you’re not obligated–don’t worry about it.”
He gapes. Don’t worry about it? How the hell is he not supposed to worry about this?
But she’s already turned on her heel and is marching away. He wants to get up and follow her but he can’t force his legs to hold him, so he stays, rooted in place by a panic that feels like deja vu.
He’s still sitting there when Ellie’s shadow falls over him, many minutes later.
“You look like you’ve seen a bloater,” she says dryly.
“I’m…fine, kid. M’fine,” he mumbles, wiping at his face.
“Thanks for ditching me for your girlfriend back there.”
“She’s not my girlfriend,” he mutters. “Don’t you have homework or somethin’?”
“Ugh. Yeah, but I’d rather bug you,” she grins, plopping down on the step next to him. “Besides, it’s movie night. Maria says it’s one of those cheesy action ones you like. Figured you’d want to go.”
He looks at her then, and his eyes must give something away, because she cocks her head, worried. “Joel?”
Oh, god, and he has Ellie to think about now. Everything with her is so fragile, so tenuous, and he’s gone and thrown another wrench into the works. He turns his head so she doesn’t see the single, traitorous tear that’s threatening to escape.
“Yeah,” he croaks out. “Yeah, kid, let’s…go see a movie.”
He doesn’t taste the popcorn, doesn’t follow the plot, and doesn’t remember saying goodnight to Ellie when the movie is over. Then he goes to bed and lays on his back and stares at the ceiling until his alarm goes off several hours later.
Tumblr media
The next morning, he’s prepping for patrol, lost in the same hazy fog of shock, when Charlie rides up beside him.
“What the hell are you doin’ here?” he bites out before he can stop himself.
“I’m on the schedule,” she says. “Why wouldn’t I be here?”
“It’s…you’re…” he swallows hard, looking around to make sure no one is listening. He hauls himself into the saddle and leans in. “You’re fuckin’ pregnant.”
“No shit, Sherlock.”
“You can’t–”
“Your sister-in-law was out here until she was six months along, if I remember correctly.”
“Yeah, but–”
She glares at him. “But what?”
He groans in frustration, looking around. “Who’re you with?”
“Allan,” she nods to the curly-haired woman waiting by the gate with Tommy. “She’s new.”
“Fuck that,” Joel says. “She needs someone with more experience. Tommy can take her.”
It’s bullshit and he knows it. Charlie has been part of Jackson’s patrol roster longer than Joel, but before she can protest, he urges his horse to the gate to meet up with his brother.
“Tommy, we’re switching. I’m gonna go with Charlie. You take the new girl.”
Tommy studies him, glances back at Charlie, and raises an eyebrow. “If you say so, big brother.”
Joel scowls. “Don’t get ideas, s’not like that.”
“Didn’t say nothin’,” Tommy smirks. “Be safe.”
The gates creak open and the patrol team strides through, pairs breaking off to go their separate ways.
“What the fuck was that?” Charlie hisses when Tommy and his new partner are out of earshot.
“We should talk,” Joel mutters. “Figured this was better. Unless you wanted the whole fuckin’ town to know.”
“We don’t have anything to talk about.”
That earns her a look. “You’re carrying my fuckin’ kid. I think we can find somethin’ to talk about.”
“It’s not ‘your kid’ or my kid or anyone’s kid until it’s born, and that’s…that’s not…likely to happen.”
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
Her lips twitch. “It means…I’ve been pregnant before. Multiple times. They don’t usually…take.”
He gapes. “Multiple…?”
“Oh, don’t fucking look at me like that,” she snaps. “It’s not what you’re thinking, not that it’s any of your damn business. I don’t make it a habit of getting knocked up. I had a life before Jackson.”
Heat crawls up his neck. He opens his mouth to apologize but nothing comes out. They ride in silence for several painfully awkward minutes.
“It’s fine,” Charlie says finally, staring straight ahead. “It’s something I’ve had a lot of time to come to terms with. Probably some hormone imbalance or whatever. I’ve never carried a pregnancy past nine weeks.”
He tries to count backward, to find that damp March day and the hazy hungover memory of their coupling.
“How many weeks has it been?”
“Eight and a half,” she says flatly. “Don’t worry, I’ll probably start cramping any day now.”
There’s a sadness in her voice that catches him off guard, tugs at his heart.
He’d only wanted to be a father in hindsight. He only knew he couldn’t live without his children when he’d held them in his arms, real and alive. He’d never had the chance to dream about what it would be like, only to have that dream cruelly stolen away.
They ride in a silence that Joel would normally prefer, but suddenly it’s stifling and heavy, almost suffocating.
“So, uh, Charlie…is that short for somethin’?”
She glances at him, bemused. “It’s Charlotte. I used to go by Lottie, but after the outbreak, I found it was…easier if people thought I was a guy. Short hair and all. The nickname stuck.”
“How’d you make it to Jackson?”
“I was part of a group that left Kansas City before the rebellion. Me and six others,” she shifts in the saddle. “One of them was a Firefly, had heard about Jackson through the grapevine and wanted to try to find it. We left in the winter, things got rough. I was the only one who made it. That was three years ago.”
“How, uh, long were you in Kansas City? Before that?”
She shoots him a look. “From day one.”
“So you were–”
“Fifteen. I was born and raised outside the city and was moved to FEDRA territory when the outbreak hit. I considered myself lucky at the time. Of course, we didn’t know how bad it would get.”
“You have family?”
“My folks and brother were killed. It’s just me.”
“M’sorry.”
She shrugs. “Was a long time ago.”
They ride in silence.
“So what’s your tragic story?” she says dryly. “I’m guessing you found Jackson because you’re Tommy’s older brother. Where’d you come from?”
“Boston.”
“That’s a pretty fuckin’ weird Boston accent,” she says, lightly mimicking his drawl.
“Originally from Texas,” he says, biting the inside of his cheek. “And there’s not much to tell. Shit hit the fan on my 36th birthday. Tommy and I got out.”
She whistles. “You’re older than you look.”
“M’not sure if that’s a compliment, but I’ll take it.”
“And Ellie? She’s your daughter?”
Your daughter. He still can’t hear the word without picturing Sarah first, a little betrayal.
“I’m the one they call when she’s gettin’ into trouble, yeah,” he mutters. “She, uh…she found me in Boston, we made the trip out here together. She’s a good kid. Seen a lot of shit.”
“Haven’t we all.”
A longer silence as they ride toward the outpost, interrupted only by birdsong and the regular thudding rhythm of the horses’ steps.
He clears his throat. “You’ll, uh, tell me if it doesn’t…take, right?”
She snorts. “I’ll let you know when you’re off the hook.”
“No,” he frowns. “I meant…you shouldn’t have to go through somethin’ like that alone.”
Her gaze in his peripheral vision lingers for a bit too long.
“Yeah,” she sighs. “I’ll tell you.”
13 – A disturbance
Underground visitor, gn reader x monster (male drider). Sfw. TW for gore and violence. First Previous Next
Dimly lit tunnels passes by you in a blur as you walk, unseen forces tugging at you to keep moving. So far, you’ve passed by the path to collect water, the living room, the library, the sleeping quarters - deeper and deeper into the depths of Dren's extensive and confusing home. Eventually, you find yourself at the entrance of tunnels you’ve yet to travel.
You lantern does not do much to illuminate what lies beyond this point. It's like staring into a void. While Dren has vigilantly made sure the tunnels you most frequent remains lit, other tunnels leading to and from those places are not. Still, the agitated anxious energy will not leave you.
I need to move.
You take a few tentative steps forward. The need does not diminish. Is the air colder here? Or are you just nervous?
What a silly thought. There's nothing to be scared of down here.
You press on, and soon, you find yourself accompanied by darkness.
Well, the dark, at least, you correct yourself, throwing an annoyed thought the harpy’s way.
You're not too worried about getting lost, knowing Dren will instinctively know where you are and can come guide you back. Still, there's something eerie about venturing alone into the unfamiliar dark tunnels, with only a lantern to guide you. The deafening silence down here still gets to you at times. It’s just so achingly empty.
Perhaps it's something one can get used to. After all, Dren still lives here, doesn’t he? But even if it is a spider thing, you can't fathom it's very pleasant.
The dark stretches before you, and you feel a little better the further you go, trying to keep track of the turns you make.
You come by yet another small stream that floats gently through the tunnel you’re in, carved out so it gently trinkles along the side of the wall. Neatly out of the main path, yet still serving as a guide. Perhaps it’ll lead you somewhere, and it should at least be easy enough to track back. You watch the swirling patterns carved into the wall as you follow the small stream, listening to the calm flow of water that fills the otherwise heavy stillness.
Several indents in the web above you signals there’s tunnels leading up too. Seems Dren has thoroughly connected to this part of the cave as well. You’d probably be able to reach up and climb them if you really wanted to. That is, if the thread he’s spun here isn’t that sticky stuff he uses for traps. You’d not want to be tangled in one of those again.
You gingerly reach out toward the ceiling to test it, when a very, very subtle sound of movement somewhere to your right catches your attention.
Movement? Down here? That can’t be right.
Nothing but you should be alive this far down, should it?
This must be your mind playing tricks. Your brain just wants to fill out the quiet with something. Regardless, goosebumps appear on your skin. With them, comes the continued need to move.
“Fine, I’m going,” you mutter to no one in annoyance. Why are your hands suddenly so clammy? The parasite inside you churns with worry at the thought of hostility, though not in the way of Morgan’s presence bearing down on you. So where is this sudden burst of anxiety coming from?
A muffled sound like rock hitting dirt disturbs your train of thought. It came from the same direction.
You frown. Perhaps you should follow your instinct here. If anything, to prove to yourself everything’s fine.
You quickly pull down the cover of the lantern, leaving you in the complete dark, but with your hand on the wall you feel your way forward towards the sound.
There’s a small indent on the wall, and feeling around it, you find there's a tunnel leading up, thankfully closer to the ground where you can reach it. The sounds might have come from somewhere within.
You quietly lift yourself up. It's not far, and soon you're standing in a slightly smaller tunnel. It goes upwards. From here, you can hear it much better. The movement turns to quiet muttering. Unfamiliar voices. Up ahead, you see the faintest light source.
Your heartbeat quickens. You're definitely not alone.
Your fears confirmed, you sneak forward as quietly as you can, the soft padding of your feet on the dirt below. Something’s wrong. You stare at the swirling patterns there, finding some comfort knowing you're still in touch with a highly efficient defense system. But why hasn't it set of the one who usually monitors it?
You reach the end of the smaller tunnel, the faint lights shining from within illuminating the walls and floor. Interestingly, in this spot, Dren has apparently decided to cover every surface in a soft padding of web. You carefully peek around the corner with bated breath.
Oh.
It would seem you've found out where Dren hides his eggs.
You're looking into a small enclave covered in web from ceiling to ground. In the middle is a small cluster of three orange, oval eggs about the size of soccer-balls, covered in a protective layer of webbing. It takes second for you to register the utter defenselessness of them. How much you've just imposed on the sanctity of their hidden room.
If not for the light piercing the dark you just came from, you'd never have found them. You glance further into the room, and find its source. Your blood runs cold.
Three hooded figures are standing at the opposite end of the alcove, eyeing the eggs and quietly whispering in foreign noises to each other. One of them moves their head, and you catch a glimpse of blueish tinted scales of their skin. You grit your teeth, realizing what's happening.
They're snatchers. There's no doubt about it.
Behind them, there is a small open hole in the wall, barely big enough to fit an adult human through.
So that's how they did it. Your grip on the lantern tightens, wondering if these are the same thieves that made way with the rest of Dren's children. And finding a need to plant a solid fist in each of their faces, as it seems they're about to finish the job. Nasty little things.
What should you do?
If you start yelling for Dren they'll undoubtedly find you, and you can easily picture what could happen: You get attacked, and they haul ass out of there, snatching whatever they can carry quickly and make away.
It risks the arachnid losing the rest of his offspring. You don't want to know how he'd react to that. You can hardly bear leaving him even with his family still alive.
You should at least try to warn him.
Soundlessly, you run your fingers through the soft webs to find the carvings on the wall, finding the strong, silky warning thread within. You shake it vigorously. Some of the webbing breaks off and sticks to your hand, but you don't have time to worry about that right now, picking out another one and shaking that one too for good measure.
Simultaneously, the snatchers start moving.
One of them steps extremely carefully toward the eggs. In the light from their lantern, you spot that it has covered its feet in web, and carefully moves so that no other part of its body touches it.
Huh. Clever.
You shake the web again. If Dren doesn't feel it, he's going to lose them. You bite back a loud protest yell as the thief slowly reaches toward one of the defenseless orbs on the floor.
It would appear you need to make a decision. You need to move.
At this rate, Dren will never make it in time before they're gone. And you're not going to stand idly by and witness a kidnapping without at least trying to intervene. You'll have to buy their parent some time. You brace yourself for potentially one of the most stupidly risky acts you've performed in your life.
"Leave them!" you bellow suddenly, and fling yourself toward the snatcher closest to the eggs.
Element of surprise on your side, a gnarly startled screech escapes the creature, and it immediately stumbles backwards towards its fellows, and out of your way.
You quickly jump forward and stand in front of the eggs protectively, shielding them from the offenders with your arms out in an awkward position.
It's quiet a moment. The snatchers stare at you, and up close now you recognize one of them as the red one who spotted you back at the marketplace. Their yellow eyes once again stare into yours.
They bare their teeth at you and hiss something, guttural words you can’t make sense of.
The other two step out to flank you, and suddenly the sharp ends of a pair of spears are pointed at you.
You ball your fists to keep your hands from shaking.
"I'm not letting you take them," you hiss back, relying on a bubbling protective anger to keep you grounded. "I've already called for the parent. You should get out of here while you still can."
You're bluffing, and frankly you don't even know if these creatures can understand you. But you don't get any option to find out as the red one snarls something else. In a split second, the blue one on their left lunges at you, spear at the ready.
You instinctively throw yourself to the side, narrowly dodging the tip of the wooden weapon. However, you've left the eggs exposed when doing so.
The other two immediately take advantage and close in on them, while the blue one focuses on keeping you occupied.
You grab two handfuls of web from your position close to the wall and pull with all your might. It comes off with a soft ripping noise, and you quickly hurl it at your blue assailant.
The blue one rambles angrily, probably in no kind terms telling you to knock it off, tearing the sticky threads off their body. They hiss, and jab forward, stabbing at you again. You jump sideways, but the creature is quick to reassess their aim. The weapon connects with the tissue in your shoulder and you grunt in pain, feeling warm blood trickle down your arm.
The other two have meanwhile managed to pick up one of the eggs each. You don’t have time to intervene with the blue one still coming at you.
In an act of desperation you swing your lantern at them, hitting them over the head with a loud clonk. The glass shatters, sharp splinters flying across the room. The blue one staggers back, dazed and now bleeding.
You take the opportunity and step forward, shoving your uninjured shoulder into their side. They're smaller than you, and trips and falls, further disturbing the webbing below.
You manage to snatch up their discarded spear, and rush ahead to cut the thieves off, blocking the small hole that makes the exit. You point it at the two fleeing with one egg each.
"Put them down!" you demand.
The two others stop momentarily, hissing at you, but while your focus was on them, the blue one has recovered. You feel a scaled arm locking around you and catching you in a headlock. You're roughly pulled backwards, losing your grip on the spear. The other two waste no time hurrying toward the exit with their prices.
The one furthest behind does not get that far. A flash of black snatches it clean off the ground, squealing.
Their red companion turns in time to watch a pair of long, hairy and pitch black spider’s legs slowly appearing from the opening of the alcove, having grappled their friend uncomfortably tight around the stomach.
Dren fully enters the room, his imposing presence suddenly making the small room feel much smaller. He's holding the snatcher with his front legs, and they're kicking and snarling in his grip, desperately struggling to escape. The egg lands on the soft webbing below with a soft bump, thankfully unharmed, and Dren quickly uses another leg to pull it behind him to safety.
Then he let's out a disgusted huff, and rapidly slams the snatcher into the ground. Following the movement is a loud crunch.
You hear bone snapping with the force of the impact, and the snatcher squeals in agony.
Dren carelessly lifts the screaming creature, and smashes them against the floor again. Their pained cries echoes through the otherwise deadly silence of the cave.
You can do nothing but stare.
Drens lifts the snatcher, and knocks them against the floor again.
And again.
And again.
Three more times, until the squealing snatcher goes silent save for a wet gurgling wheeze, their body reduced to a broken pile of bones and meat.
A cold sweat breaks out as your entire body shudders, distraught from the horrific sight.
How long until he cracks, and simply kills you?
The grip on your head lessens in favor of gripping around your upper body tightly, and you hear a small whine from the blue snatcher holding you captive. It feels like it now focuses more on using you as a meat shield rather than trapping you.
Dren looks up from the ruined carcass below him and his eyes dart between the one holding you, and the one holding his second egg, eerily quiet with and odd stoic expression. Fresh blood drips from his carapace, his mandibles clicking in contemplation, like wondering who he should sink his fangs into next.
No one dares move.
You suddenly understand why an insect freezes in the presence of a predator, fearful of what any slight disturbance in the air would set off. It's like he's an arrow nocked on a bow, ready to release at any moment, and you pray to anyone who might be listening that you're not its target.
You suddenly feel something sharp poking your side and let out a small gasp. Not a millisecond later, you let out a yell as a large spiders body is suddenly towering over you, there in a flash. The blue snatcher’s grip on you vanishes in an instant as it flies upwards, dropping a knife that falls to the webbed ground with a soft thud.
You stumble forward, landing clumsily on your knees and palms in the sticky webbing below. All around you there is movement as Dren paces around, his lower body above you. There's an uncanny wet tearing noise, and you suddenly see droplets of blood falling on the floor as yet another squealing egg-thief is efficiently silenced.
You hear footsteps, as the last of the snatchers, the red one, makes a beeline for the small exit, sprinting across the alcove with one egg in each arm.
Dren's entire body springs to attention as he moves above you, pointing in the direction of the last thief. He dashes toward it, carelessly throwing the now disfigured body he was holding aside. They splatter against the wall with a squelch, leaving blood stains behind as they join their dead comrade.
The last snatcher barely manages to leap through the opening before Dren tramples them flat.
"NO!" Dren roars, and starts pushing his legs into the opening, too big to fit through. "NO!"
His enraged outburst echoes through the cave as he claws at the opening in the wall, trying to make it bigger so he can give chase.
You sit up and stare at him, feeling your heart galloping, a stench of blood and sweat in the air. Your eyes dart to the two mangled corpses carelessly thrown to the ground, and you find it odd. How were these lumps of meat two people just mere seconds ago? The final egg lies motionless on the floor close to them, vulnerable and harmless. The very beginning of this whole conflict.
What will they be capable when they grow up?
You look back to Dren, your answer, your companion and protector, watching him completely loose himself along the safety of his last eggs.
There's an odd sort of clarity in your mind then, watching this unfold. Like being inside the eye of a storm.
Something in the way Dren tears through his home without a care of ruining what he has spend so long building, in between his wheezes and snarling, you're reminded of what he is in this moment. Despite having witnessed him tearing two people apart in seconds flat, despite the bloody scene and ruthless violence - right now, he's just a parent, desperately trying to avoid any harm coming to his children.
You can feel it. You can sense the pain and fear fueling his wrath, and you find it links to something you share with him. Something inside you pops, a sudden burst of anger demands you take action.
Dren won’t fit through that hole. But you will.
Quickly, you find yourself on your feet, picking up the discarded spear and rushing toward the custodian to help.
"Move!" you yell at Dren, and he doesn't hear you at all, still feverishly ripping whole chunks out of the wall. "Out of the way!"
You push past the flurry of movement that is his legs, and shiver when they grace across your back when you interrupt, but thankfully no further - seems he's still coherent enough not to squash you - so you quickly slip inside the opening to chase down the red thief. The arachnid’s distressed shouting and hissing continues behind you, and you hear him call your name.
You see the light-source up ahead and sprint toward the snatcher, even though you're not really sure what you're going to do if you catch it. The tunnel is narrow and you need to duck your head under roots traveling across the ceiling. The snatcher is quick, but you find yourself at an even pace, even catching up. It carrying two eggs might have given you an advantage in movement.
The snatcher stops up ahead close to a small ladder presumably leading outside. Carefully but quickly, the red one puts the eggs into a basket waiting on the ground next to it. You intercept them there, spear at the ready.
"Give them back!" you yell.
The red snatcher stares up at you in surprise, and meets your threat with a hiss. They take a heavy step forward.
You don't let up. You angrily jab the spear at Red again to force them further back, and away from the eggs.
They snarl at you this time, two long fangs glinting in the dim lantern light as their hands open and closes, considering their options. With their hood back, you notice the red scales covering their head are torn in places. Their yellow eyes are blown wide open, and their nostrils are flaring.
They're afraid.
As they should be.
"Run now, and you may get out of here alive," you spit, trying your words while they're still reluctant to fight. "Get the hell out of dodge before the spider figures out the tunnel has another entrance point."
You're still not sure if the thing even understands you. But they look between you and the basket containing their price, and then glances back the way where a certain large predator has his mind currently set to 'brutally murderous'.
The snatcher takes a few steps backwards, watching you. When you make no move, they turn on their heel, and dashes toward the ladder, leaving the eggs and lantern behind. They glance back at you one last time, before rapidly ascending it into the darkness outside, and out of view.
You keep watch for a few seconds, giving the snatcher time to cover some ground before daring to look away from the opening.
Once certain they've gone, you hurriedly open the basket, and look over the eggs.
They're still orange, slightly translucent, and, most importantly, uninjured. On top of the tough membrane, you see what seems to be an outline of legs. You breathe a heavy sigh of relief, carefully putting a hand on one of them. It’s pleasantly warm.
There's a strange sort of intimacy in staring at these fragile little creatures. After all, Dren's trusted no one to see them, not even you.
This is Dren’s children you’re looking at. And you've just saved their lives.
Carefully, your reach down to scoop them up in your arms.
"Holy shit, do not drop them, do not drop them.." you urgently whisper to yourself as you do, anxious you might accidentally do just that.
The warmth emanating from them is familiar, and you hold them close to your chest, carefully making your way back down the tunnel. The weight of them in your arms brings an odd sense of calm to you, despite the haphazard situation.
A brief gust of wind stops you, however, and you glance back at the hole above the ladder.
You almost feel a pull, calling you towards it.
What a bad time to be interrupted. But you could just go and leave everything behind to be somewhere else, couldn't you?
All these emotions, all of this trouble, the blood and violence, everything you'll need to fix when you get back home. You don't have to do any of it.
It's almost tempting to climb up, if just for a few seconds. Just escape to the outside and feel free of it all.
Escape? You stop and ponder on your own train of thought. That would require I'm a captive.
You look down at the two vulnerable orbs nestled safely in your arms.
No. Something else inside you says. These are more important right now.
You trudge back down the tunnel, ignoring the thing inside you squirming in protest.
Dren has meanwhile managed to turn the opening of the snatcher tunnel into mulch. He's still going at it when you return, now completely silent save for the noise of dirt being ripped apart.
The sight reminds you of the potential danger from this whole confrontation. Dren's current state of mind, and the full view of his powerful legs violently reducing the wall to nothing, is not helping matters. Suddenly, you don’t feel much like a savior. You feel more like a rat hiding inside a crack in the wall, while the cat tries to furiously claw its way towards it.
You step in place for a moment, unsure.
"Dren?" you call out eventually, hesitant.
And the movement halts. You can hear him panting from the effort, tense and awaiting your next words with panicked anticipation.
Your throat is dry. "I- I have them. They're okay.”
Dren’s legs slowly retreat and his head and torso appears in the tunnel entrance. He leans down to peer through it at you.
All his pitch black eyes are wide open and his mandibles are flaring, but something in his expression shifts when he spots you holding his eggs close as to not drop them. Fear? Anger? Desperation? You can't read him at all.
You take a wary step back.
“Please,” he rasps quickly when you do so, and very, very slowly reaches his bloodied hands toward you. Inviting you in with open arms. “Please. Come here.”
There's something eerily familiar in the way he says that, his voice gently rolling through your mind, urging, compelling you, in a way he hasn't done before.
The cold sweat prickling your skin at the feeling makes you reluctant to follow the instruction. Yet, another part quite would like to, would like to indeed, you can trust him and get closer, he’s safe, you know he’s safe- You shake it off, unsure if he's of sound mind to not grab and tear you apart the second you're within reach. Just like he did the previous creature who held his eggs.
Dren swallows, obviously struggling to not continue his rampage to just get them back, to just reach you, to take control of what happens to what is his - armed with the patience of an experienced predator he takes a deep breath, grounding himself as to not startle you further, lest you take flight.
"Please," he says softly, normally, waving his hands in a beckoning motion.
You realize the amount of power you hold over him right now. If you wanted, you could turn on your heel and walk away. You could name a price. You could throw the eggs on the ground and trample them flat, and he would be powerless to stop you.
But you don't. These eggs are innocent and vulnerable, and in front of you stands a sure-fire way to ensure that nothing will happen to them.
You still see Dren there despite the terror. You recognize his patience and fiercely protective nature, that’s been there with you every step of the way. Now, once again, working to keep everything he cares about safe.
You slowly make your way toward him. He’s staring at you almost like in a trance.
You had prepared to hand the eggs over once you reached him, but Dren slowly moves back, allowing you to pass through the carnage that used to be an entry point. Just watching with wide eyes. You’re not exactly sure what he expects you to do. But he hasn't stopped you, so you keep going.
You step across the alcove, and carefully place the eggs back to their right place in the middle of the room. Dren comes up next to you, and places the third next to them. In silence, he starts gently wrapping some of the ruined webbing over them again with his front legs. You move back to give him space to fuss over them.
You've barely taken a step before he rapidly turns, and suddenly lunges towards you. With his arms, he snatches you clean off the ground.
You can't hold back a small scream as you're suddenly in the air - this is it, I'm dead, I'm dead, I'm so so dead - which Dren completely ignores, as he forcibly squeezes you against his torso in a bone-crushing embrace.
Your face is flattened against his fur-covered shoulder, your arms sprawled to the side in shock, legs dangling uselessly over the ground. You hardly dare breathe, not that the force currently pressuring your ribs allows for much lung expansion anyway.
Dren buries his face in the crook of your neck.
He's shaking.
"Thank you," he breathes, clutching you a bit tighter. "Thank you."
You dangle awkwardly in his arms, trying to calm your racing pulse, taking shuddering breaths. Oh. It would appear this is gratitude.
Gingerly, not really knowing what else to do, you wrap your arms around him in turn, and he shudders when you do so. He shifts then, and you feel yourself being leaned backwards, settled on his pedipalps. Your backside is leaning against the web-covered eggs, and his front legs curl around them, holding both you and them in place.
He holds you like that for a while. You let him cling to you, while he works through whatever it is he needs to work through to calm down after this experience.
You don't dare glance toward the mutilated corpses currently concealed behind the furred shoulder, your face is pressing against. You ignore the stains of crimson littering the space. There's nothing you can really say, so you settle for running your fingers through the hairs on the back of Dren’s neck in a soothing manner. A soft chitter suggests he likes it when you do that, at least.
"It's alright," you mutter softly, testing the waters. "They're safe."
"Safe," he repeats, nodding against your shoulder. “Safe.”
There’s a pause, and then Dren readjusts his hold a bit. You feel him tense, like preparing for an impact. He sucks in a breath before he speaks.
“Give me the winter,” he blurts hurriedly. Like he needed to get it out before it was too late. “Just the winter.”
You try to lean back and get a look at him, but his grip won’t let you move an inch away - as if he's afraid to let you go.
“What..?” you try as softly as you can. He’s getting agitated.
“Just until they hatch, until they can fend for themselves,” Dren elaborates, rushed words leaving him like rapid fire. “I’ll help you get back home, I promise, whatever you need, I'll do it. Just – please stay. Act as my sentry. Give me the winter.”
Supposedly it makes sense he would do this now, of all times. It would seem this is what it took to finally break him.
You lean further into him, if anything to silently let him know you're not just going up in thin air, so maybe his death-grip on you lessens a bit.
You sigh. "That's - but Dren, you know I'm not-"
"You're perfect," he states firmly, cutting you off. The tips of his fangs brush over your neck as he speaks. "You kept watch and called for me when it was needed - risked yourself to defend my young, despite them not being your responsibility - you've already done more than I could ever ask. I have no right, I know that, but I can't - If I lose anyone else-" he trails off in his rambling. "Please. Give me the winter."
It's not like you're actually much in a position to say 'no', but you don't really get the feeling Dren is thinking about that right now. Like your refusal means you're going to slip through his fingers, and vanish in an instant. As if he's not the one holding your only known key home. As if he's not perfectly capable of keeping you trapped here, if he so did desire.
But maybe his conviction in this ultimately being your choice means something - maybe that actually means everything.
You sense the remaining vulnerable eggs pressing against your backside, a faint reminder of what you did tonight. It seems it's wasn't really you who needed to move.
You’re already connected to them, aren’t you? How could you possibly leave everything behind? Not now. Not after all of this.
What's a few months of darkness as a price for keeping everyone you care about alive?
"Okay," you whisper, clutching him back. You can feel a pressure growing around you, like you’ve just used your entire body to pick up something heavy. It’s warm. "Okay, you can have my winter."
"I will let you go," Dren assures you firmly, speaking through his teeth. "It will hurt, I know it will, for both of us, but I vow to you, when all this is over, when we're all safe-"
"I know," you placate. "I trust you."
Dren breathes out, and with it leaves the tension in his body. He finally leans back to look at you again, and there are tears in black eyes. Carefully, gently, his hands reaches up to cup your face. You stare at him like you did earlier this very day and, once again, he effortlessly draws you in.
Because looking at him like this is nice. It’s really, really nice. You’re being enveloped in a warm blanket, soothing all worry you’ve ever had. You can feel a pull from him, coaxing you closer, something gently wrapping around you. Of course this will work, of course you’re in good hands here, of course Dren knows what’s best -
A sudden piercing pain shoots through you in retaliation, and you gasp, severing eye contact and instinctively trying to curl up to protect yourself. It's no use. The pain strikes your core, like a gun was fired from within. Something inside you heavily disagrees.
Dren hisses at the interruption and deftly pulls you to him again, like a futile attempt to shield you with his body. You can feel his formerly calm energy clouded in a protective fury, zeroing in on the interloper, surrounding it, grabbing it, strangling it.
You cry out. You can’t help it. The parasite’s pain is as much yours as it is its, and the agony is unbearable. It feels like your chest is being crushed, like your ribs can shatter and destroy your innards at any moment.
“I know, Sweetness, I’m sorry, I’m so sorry, shh,” Dren soothes you, holding you against him with a hand over the back of your neck, keeping his grip on the parasite and angrily thwarting it.
It feels like forever you're in this pure world of pain, at some point you may have started begging for it to stop, only wishing dearly for everything to turn quiet, for it to be over. You can faintly hear reassurances and apologies in the foggy cloud of your consciousness, and something, someone, peers into your mind, feeling for a thread intertwining with the very core of your being.
Then, there’s a small release of pressure, like when you’ve finished tying the knot of a shoelace. At the end, you let it go, sitting neat and comfortably tight.
And then the pain is gone.
It’s like the hook trapping the fish suddenly disappearing from the fight. The struggle is over, leaving the fishing line there, suspended in the flowing water. Useless.
Dren’s breath is warm on your neck as he chitters and purrs to calm you, pedipalps and arms around you like both of his halves are checking on you at once. You just hold on to him, feeling an immense relief coursing through your body. The pressure is gone, leaving you sore, and completely exhausted. Vulnerable.
And you can feel him. Really, feel him.
Dren is everywhere around you, inside you, his energy twisting and turning in a strange dance. He’s happy. So, so happy. The overflowing emotion is infectious, and you struggle to hold in an odd strangled laugh full of sobs.
And it dawns on you now what you’ve just agreed to. What you’ve just accepted into your life. And, if what you’ve learned from the harpy is true, you’ve just acquired the qualifications for your new job as a sentry.
Your shift at the hardware store couldn’t end soon enough. You hike your purse onto your shoulder as you walk out the automatic doors, your stomach rotting and knotted. You’ve felt sick all morning. Your coffee burned like acid going down and you only finished half the stale bagel you found in your mother’s kitchen.
Sleep’s been just as difficult. You can’t seem to get comfortable. Your anxiety keeps you up and a sense of restlessness underlined with dread. The thoughts you keep running from will catch up with you one day.
You pass the pharmacy, glancing through the window at the big poster advertising compression socks. You stop at the other end of the facade and hesitate. You sidle back and stare at another display, pink and white and worrying.
You laugh at yourself. No. You’re just paranoid.
Still, you make yourself go inside. You wander the aisles until you find what you’re looking for. You look up and down the row self-consciously then bag to the shelf. Does it matter which one you get? This one says early detection. And it’s fucking expensive. Does it really have to cost so much to be sure?
Fuck it. For your peace of mind. You may actually get a full night’s sleep if you put this behind you once and for all.
You go to the counter and refuse to look directly at the cashier. You pay, more than you want to, you leave with the test in a paper bag. As you walk down the street, a car door opens behind you. The driver feeds the meter as you distract yourself with the shop windows.
Before you can turn down the path, you hear your name and hand tugs you back. You spin in horror at the voice you never wanted to hear again. You try to wrench away from Andy as he looks at you, a furrow between his brows as he clings to you in desperation.
“Hey,” he says, “can we talk?”
“Get off– what are you– how–” you sputter in confusion.
He lets you go and raises his hand defensively.
“I don’t like how things ended–”
“Don’t like– I didn’t like any of it. Get away from me.”
He flinches and exhales heavily, “you’ve been ignoring my calls. Just hear me out–”
“No,” you spin and stomp away, “there’s nothing to hear.”
He follows you and you speed up, trying to evade him as you hurry down the path. He snags your wrist and the force of it causes the bag to slip from your grasp. It hits the pavement and the contents spill out, the box rolling out from under the receipt.
Andy’s hand stays firm on your arm as you both look down. You feel his grip slacken and you rip away from him. You quickly bend to scramble up your stuff. As you stand he lets out a shudder.
“You’re pregnant?” He asks.
You cringe and swallow, “I don’t know.”
“Oh,” he seems startled, “well… if you are–”
“If I am,” you insist, “it’s none of your business.”
“It is exactly my business,” he retorts.
“Fuck off,” you snarl. “Go home. You already have a child, you don’t need another.”
You evade him as he reaches for you once again. He doesn’t persist as a family comes down the other side of the path with a stroller. Fuck, what a wonderful foreboding coincidence. You pump your arms and furiously march away.
Of all days for him to show up…
How long has he been planning this? Has he been watching you? Those questions rattle in your mind but are quickly muted by the biggest one of all. The one in your hand. Did you really fuck up that bad?
💜
You stare at the two lines. Your heart drops. No. No. God! He already fucked you up so bad, why this? Why? Fuck!
You shove the test off the counter and into the bin. You pace back and forth in a panic, head swelling as the world pulses around you. You can’t do this. You already have your mind made up. You can’t keep it. You refuse to. You don’t want any part of him around you.
“Hey, where are ya?” Your mother hollers up the stairs.
“Mom, I’m busy,” you shout back.
“Not too busy to get your ass down here. Now!”
Shit. You know that tone. You fucked up something. You roll your eyes and rip open the bathroom door. You barrel downstairs and stop as your mother stands smoking by the front door. A large figure fills the frame. Does he not give up?
“I always knew you were up to no good,” your mother accuses.
“What?” You snip, “mom, tell him to go away–”
“No wonder you’ve been shorting me on rent,” she spits back, “you ain’t showing up for work.”
“What are you talking about? You just ask Bert–” You snarl and swallow your anger, directing it instead at your unwelcome visitor, “Andy, go away.”
“Don’t you talk to him like that. You’re not quittin’ this one, honey,” your mother taps ash onto the carpet, “the man’s being nice so you go out and figure this all out. You’re not living in my house if you’re not working–”
“Mom, he’s not–”
“Deal with it,” she crushes the cigarette in the overflowing tray beside the door and stomps off.
You shake your head, “Andy, just go.”
“Please, come outside.”
“No.”
“Do you really want to have this conversation in here?” He challenges.
You roll your eyes and wave him out. He retreats and you follow him, quickly pulling the door shut. You’re already pissed at him.
“What the hell? You told my mom you’re what? My boss? I already have to deal with enough–”
“Well, what could I say? I figured the truth wouldn’t exactly be great.”
“Which truth? The one where you raped me–”
“Sweetie, no, I didn’t–”
“Enough. I’m not telling you again. Go away and leave me alone. I never wanted this. I never wanted you or a baby or–”
“Baby? You took the test?” He asks wispily.
You close your eyes and drop your head back. You hate him. You hate this. You hate everything about your life.
“I’m not keeping it, alright?”
“You’re not– that’s not your choice–”
“It is. You don’t get to take this one from me.”
“It’s mine. My child.”
“Oh, fuck off, look at Jacob. You really another one?”
“Yeah, actually, I’d like to do it right. Sweetie, I can take care of you and the baby. I will. You can get away from here,” he glances over at the stained siding of your mother’s pigsty, “you don’t have to live like this.”
“And you think I want to live with you?” You bark.
“Do you have any other option? Really?”
“Yeah, I do. I’d rather rot in filth.”
His jaw grits and his veneer falls. He puts his hands on his hips.
“We’ll see about that,” he snarls. “I am the father, I get a say.”
“You’re a monster,” you sneer.
He glares at you. He lets out a breath and tilts his head until his neck cracks.
“Only if that’s what you make me be,” he flicks his fingers at you dismissively, “and you have no idea what sort of prick I can really be.”
Hey, got a crazy idea! it’s an au where lindir is a professor and his class sucks they treat him awful (except you, you’re too kind to hurt anyone) lindir has enough and has class write a paper. “You’re dead, what do people say about  you at your funeral?”  You write your paper it’s sad, it contains nothing good. When everyone gets their papers back, yours says ‘see me after class’ in red ink. You worriedly go up to his desk after class, fidgeting. He gently looked at you, “you’re a good person, why would you write something like this?” He asks. “Well, you said to white what people would say at my funeral, I wrote the truth… c-can I go now,” you ask, trying not to cry. {now you finish the story!}
This is a really cool idea, thx anon!
Tumblr media
Warning: mentions of abuse and harm, violence, a little blood, don’t read if it makes you uncomfortable.
“C-can I go now?” You ask, trying desperately not to break down in tears.
Lindir stands, his tall form towering over you. You were short for an elf, making you quite shy. You try not to tremble, but it’s hard, considering the fact that you’ve been abused all your life. He reaches out and you flinch, taking a step back, afraid he’s going to hurt you.
His hand lands gently on your shoulder and you look at it, surprised by his gentleness. “Sir, please…” you begin, not knowing how to feel about his touch that surprisingly doesn’t hurt. “I-I have to go, I’ll be in terrible trouble if I’m late…” you stammer, backing away.
He sighs but nods. “Go, but if you ever feel that the roof above your head isn’t safe tell me, I can’t let you go somewhere you aren’t safe.” He says gently.
“O-ok,” you stammer before running out the door. You walk rather quickly so you can get to the farm you’re forced to work on before you’re late.
You turn down the road and enter a path in the forest, a shortcut. When you arrive you’re immediately met by an angry voice from behind you.
“You’re late! That means double the for you, girl,” the man owning the farm shouts.
“B-but,” you stammer.
Your wrist is grabbed harshly. “I guess you don’t want to eat tonight then do you?!”
You tremble and look away.
“Look at me when I’m talking to you, brat!” You see his raised raised that is about to punch you. You slam your eyes shut and look away.
You feel nothing and open your eyes. In front of you stands Lindir, his hand is over his cheek. “If I find out that you ever touch her again I’ll make sure your farm is shut down and you’re dealt with properly.”
“No you won’t,” he hisses.
You gulp and then shriek as Lindir is punched once more, causing him to stagger back and fall to his knees as he gasps for air.
“Let that be a warning to you…” he then turned to you. “What are you doing standing here?! Get to work!”
You run off and immediately start working on whatever you can. As soon as the man goes back inside you run to Lindir, helping him stand. “What are you doing here?” You ask.
He uses you as a crutch and gives you a soft smile. “I had a feeling you weren’t safe here and I knew I wouldn’t sleep if I didn’t make sure first…”
You led him into the forest a little way and helped him sit on a fallen log. You took a look at his cheek and eye, which were already beginning to swell as his skin turned black and blue. “You need to leave, now.”
Your hands were grasped tightly but not harshly. “You can't stay here…”
“I have to, I have nowhere else to go… and even if I did, he’d just blackmail me again…”
Lindir stood and gently cupped your chin. “I won’t let that happen, come, I know a place where you’ll be safe…”
“I-I…” you looked back at the old farm then at the pleading eyes of your professor. “O-ok…”
He then leads you out of the forest and down a winding path to a huge mansion.
You follow him through the gate and he leads you to the front door, opening it.
A tall elf who you immediately recognize as Elrond, the mayor, turns. “Lindir, I was just about to send someone to find… you… what happened to you?” He asks, gently touching the bused skin.
Lindir winced and pulled his face back. “Yeah, that hurts…”
That’s when you were noticed, standing silently behind Lindir.
“And who is this?”
Lindir turned and smiled slightly. “That’s y/n, one of my students…I brought her here because the roof she was under was far from safe…”
The state of your clothing proved that.
“My confronting her safety is what caused my injuries.” Lindir quickly added.
Elrond whipped his head around, clearly shocked, then he looked back at you. “If this is Lindir’s state from one encounter then you must be in a far worse state…”
You backed away as he walked closer. Your back was now pressed against the door. You shielded your face with your hands as he reached out to touch you. “Please…” you whimpered, trembling vigorously.
“She’s been through a lot,” Lindir said.
-.-.-
You were now in a large bathroom, water steaming from the tub. “I-I’m capable of washing myself,” you said as your clothes were about to be pulled off as the mades prepared to bathe you.
They paused and left. You sighed and then tossed your cloths aside you now stood in only your lingerie. The door then opened and you gasped, spinning around. Lindir stood in the doorway. “Sorry ill-” he paused then entered, walking to you. You took a step back, confused.
Lindir’s hand very gently fell on your side, below a large bruise. He clicked his tongue on the roof of his mouth before circling you. He gasped in horror and placed his hand on your back which was also covered in bruises as well as scars. “Oh, y/n…”
You trembled at the memories before Letting out a tiny sob.
“Hey, it’s alright… you’re safe now, I promise.”
Once you calmed down, lindir left you to bathe, bringing you clean clothes a moment later.
When you finished bathing you got out of the tub and dried yourself, wrapping the towel around you and brushed your hair. You let out a tiny cry of pain as you lifted your arm to pull the brush through your hair.
Lindir was immediately there, asking what was wrong. You shyly told him and he smiled, motioning for you to hand him the brush, which you did.
He gently combed your hair before helping you dress. You blushed a little as he brushed his hand agents your shoulder.
-.-.-
When your head hit the pillow you passed out immediately, exhausted. But unfortunately, sometime in the night dreams woke you. You let out a scream before breaking down in tears and hugging the pillow close.
Your door was slammed open and Lindir ran to your side. “Y/n, what happened? Are you hurt?”
You shook your head. “N-no, it was only a dream, I’m sorry to have woken you…”
You felt a gentle hand on your shoulder and you lifted your head. Lindir was running circles of comfort onto your back. “Hey, you have nothing to apologize for…”
You sat up and sniffled before surprising both yourself and Lindir as you threw your arms around him and let yourself cry.
When you had no tears left you immediately let go and scooted back. “Sorry…”
Lindir placed his hand on your leg and tremors ran through your body. “Get some sleep.”
You lay, but didn’t close your eyes.
“Y/n?”
“These dreams have plagued me for years. I can’t… I won’t… I’d rather be exhausted then face those dreams again…”
Next thing you knew, lindir had stood and went to the door. You frowned, figuring he was leaving. But instead the door was closed and then he walked back over, crawling under the blankets and gently pulling you closer so your head was on his chest. You looked at him confused. “What are you-”
To your shock, his hand was on the back of your neck and his lips pressed against yours. You stared in shock when the kiss ended. “Sir, I-”
“Please just call me Lindir…”
You blushed before kissing him again, center cupping his face, being mindful of his bruise. He moaned and wrapped his arms around your neck, pulling you closer.
You eventually fell asleep, head on his chest.
In the Shattering of Things, Ch. 68: No One But Me
Tumblr media
Summary: Rose confronts Cullen when she hears a devastating rumor and then is confronted with a bitter truth. With their Winter Palace operation closing in, Rose needs to get solid ground under her feet.
Fic Summary: Lady Rose Trevelyan's idle, aristocratic life blinks out in a haze of irrelevance when the breach destroys the Conclave. She may be soft and coddled when she joins the Inquisition, but there's a fierceness inside her she's yet to fully recognize. Armed with only a few relevant skills and the mark that makes her a legend, she is thrust onto a path delivering hope where it’s long been scorched away and finds comfort in the grumpy, handsome stick in the mud charged with her protection and training. As she stumbles her way across southern Thedas, she begins to realize she's tangled at the center of machinations she barely understands, and she's not alone in that. Enter Hawke.
Excerpt below the cut 👇
I recognize his gait before I recognize any other detail— the set and dip of his shoulders as he strides across the yard with determined steps. He disappears into the armory. I follow.
I’ve been feeling ill since Dorian confessed it to me. He said they’d been playing chess, carefully avoiding the subject of me, and it had just sort of slipped from Cullen’s lips. An offhand remark about stepping down. I’d pressed him for more but Dorian said the comment had emerged seemingly out of nowhere. He’d said that he looked exhausted and generally withdrawn, but that I could see with my own eyes.
Fires from the twin forges throw heat clear across the space, searing my skin with sudden radiance as I enter behind Cullen. A pair of blacksmiths repair dented shields and sharpen blades, the grinding and clanking reverberating off the timber and stone walls. The work doesn’t abate for my benefit which I appreciate as it provides enough cover for this prickly conversation.
“Commander,” I say, when it’s clear Cullen is on his way up to Cassandra’s small suite in the attic.
“Inquisitor,” he says, obviously flustered by my sudden presence. He hesitates in his boots but then saunters back toward me, stopping several paces away.
“Dorian mentioned something to me that I thought merited follow up,” I start with a heavy, inescapable sigh. “He was worried and didn’t know what to do. So he told me.”
Cullen shakes his head, grimacing, no doubt abusing himself for saying anything or trusting anyone at all. He motions to the smiths at work to vacate the space.
“He would never betray your confidence unless he thought it was serious,” I add, swallowing back the anxious knot in my throat. “He said you mentioned leaving.” Just saying it hits with the same savagery as it did the first time I heard it an hour ago.
Cullen blinks at me, chagrined. “That is not what I said. Whether he interpreted it that way is another story. And I will not be held accountable for his wild extrapolations.”
“I can see that you’re not doing well,” I press.
“It’s not your concern,” he answers. Too quickly.
“It is my concern. You’re my friend.” I wonder if that’s even true anymore.
Cullen snorts, pacing around in a restive figure eight, eyes searching blankly as he mulls over my words and prepares to parry. He’s building a wall between us faster than I can climb over it.
“And the commander of my army.” At least that should mean something to him.
He fixes an aggravated, hollow stare upon me. “Has my performance been substandard?”
I’m startled by the question. “No, not at all— I—”
“Then with respect, I assume the discussion is over.”
“Maker, Cullen. Don’t think I don’t notice.” I feel like I’m pleading with him. “I see it.”
“I believe I told you that Lady Cassandra would monitor my performance. And if I recall correctly, you consented. If you would like to redraw the parameters of the arrangement—”
“Stop,” I beg him. “Can’t we just talk the way we did before?”
He grudgingly turns to face me fully and nods, forcing himself to look at me.
“If you’re struggling without lyrium—”
“Are you asking me to take it?”
Azriel's feet pounded against the winding path, pulling you along in a thrilling game of chase.
Laughter and gasps escaped your lips as you ran through the forest, leaving the distant sounds of the party behind. The only light came from glowing fae orbs scattered throughout the trees, casting an ethereal glow over the two of you.
As Azriel suddenly turned, you collided with his solid chest, eliciting a playful oomph from both of you. He held onto you tightly, his muscular arms enveloping you as he devoured your lips in a desperate, hungry kiss. His fingers tangled in your hair, messing up your perfectly pinned bun, while his other hand gripped your lower back, pulling you impossibly closer. You could feel his growls vibrating against your mouth as he whispered huskily, "I couldn't take my eyes off of you all night in that dress. I need it off of you."
Anticipation coursed through your body at his words, but you playfully protested with a breathless "Slow down, Az!" He only chuckled and pulled you along after him once more.
You soon reached a wall of thick hedges that blocked any view beyond. Azriel searched for an entrance before ducking inside with you close behind. Pressing
you against the inner wall, his body molded into yours as leaves rustled behind you. His hands roamed up your thigh, pushing your dress higher as he kissed and nipped at your neck. You leaned back into the hedge, moaning softly as he continued to ravish your skin. "What's gotten into you?" You whispered between breaths, running your hands through his dark locks.
"I can't get enough of you," he replied, sinking to his knees in front of you and pushing your dress up even further. "You're stunning," kiss, "You're quick," kiss, "You can play my game."
Another kiss landed just above your undergarments and your breath hitched in excitement. But just as things were heating up, the sound of approaching footsteps made you quickly push Azriel away. He growled in frustration but then grabbed your hand and led you deeper into the maze.
You couldn't contain your giggles as you stumbled after him, making sharp turns and twists until finally he stopped and lifted you up by your thighs, pressing you against a wall. Your squeals of delight were muffled by his insistent kisses as he gripped your soft skin tightly, his desire for you in every touch and movement.
You met his own kisses with a hunger of your own, your hands grasping desperately into his hair.
“I have never wanted anyone as much as I crave you.” His whisper tickled your ear and sent shivers down your spine. He playfully nipped at your earlobe before continuing, “Never dreamed of anyone as intensely as I dream of you.” Your giggle was cut short by his next words, “Never pleasured myself to any thought as frequently as I have to the thought of you.” He paused for a moment, taking in the sight of you with hungry eyes. “Your moans, your skin,” he leaned in for a deep inhale, “the feel of you tightening around me.” His primal desire was evident in his every move. “You are everything I have been missing.” His breathless confession made your heart flutter.
As his fingers kneaded into the soft skin of your thighs, he shifted to hold you solely by your rear. You could feel his hardened form pressing against his trousers, seeking entrance into your slick wet heat. You went to reach for him, but before you could, Azriel set you back on your feet which wobbled like jelly.
Opening your eyes to meet his gaze, he groaned slightly before capturing your lips in another kiss.
“Let’s make it more interesting.” He suggested with a sly smile, his voice dripping with intimacy.
Leaning closer to you, he wrapped his hand around the back of your neck and pulled you in even closer. You gasped softly at the sensation of his other hand wrapping around your back, pulling your bodies impossibly closer together. “Close those gorgeous eyes,” he whispered, “and count to 30.” Pressing two kisses onto each eyelid, he watched as you obediently closed them. “And while you do that,” he continued, taking a step back, “I'll go deeper into the maze.”
The sudden absence of his body sent a chill running through you.
“When you're finished counting, come find me.” With a few more steps away from you, he added with a mischievous grin, “And I'll reward you.”
You couldn't help but giggle at the playful nature of his suggestion. "We're not children, Azriel."
But in an instant, he was back at your ear and all traces of playfulness were gone. "This isn't a child's game," he whispered, causing you to jump. And just like that, there was silence.
You began loudly counting, your heart pounding with excitement as you called out the numbers. And then at 30, you opened your eyes to find yourself standing in front of an empty, dark maze. Giggling to yourself, you took a few hesitant steps forward. Trying to track down a male who moved like a shadow would be a challenge in itself, but you knew Azriel wouldn't be able to resist finding you for much longer, especially not in his current state of desperate longing.
As you followed the winding path, you took in the lush greenery and countless diverging trails that beckoned to be explored. The thought of Azriel hiding from you in this dense foliage brought a smile to your face and a twinkle to your eye. You turned, attempting to catch even a hint of his scent, but the cunning spymaster had likely masked it with ease. From the end of the path, a lone shadow flitted around a corner, daring you to give chase. With determination in your step, you sprinted towards the corner, turning sharply as another fleeting shadow disappeared down a side trail.
"For a spymaster, you're not very good at hiding!" You playfully taunted in between breaths.
But Azriel's voice seemed to surround you from all directions, filling your ears with his deep and velvety tone. "Should I make it harder for you? I think I’m already hard enough." he countered slyly, his voice dripping with seduction as something in your core throbbed.
Your pace slowed as you cautiously peeked around corners, straining your ears for any sign of movement. Suddenly, a shadow darted behind you from the path you had just come from. "I feel like this is cheating," you called out with an endearing pout, but there was no response. As you continued on, the sound of footsteps echoed from a nearby trail and you paused, grinning mischievously as you attempted to track the elusive shadows around each turn. With every passing moment, they seemed to grow faster and more cunning.
"You're getting closer," Azriel's voice taunted once again.
Taking a deep breath, you respond with mock indignation, "Are you moving? Because if so, that's not fair!"
His reply was a low whisper that seemed to reverberate from all directions, sending shivers down your spine.
"Who said anything about playing fair, little one?"
With each turn, your feet pounded against the pavement as you chased after a fleeting shadow.
But as you reached another dead end, you could only huff out a breath in frustration and turn back around. The once clear trail of shadows had now disappeared, leaving you with a sense of unease. Your heart started to beat faster as you called out for Azriel, hoping for a response.
But the silence that greeted you was deafening. For what felt like an eternity, you walked down different paths and turned corners, frantically searching for him while the world around you remained eerily still. Each step echoed in the empty space as fear clawed at your chest.
"Azriel?" You called out again, desperation seeping into your voice. "Az!" You yelled once more, feeling a rising panic within you.
"Azriel, please answer me!" But still, there was no response. You continued down another path, the never-ending rows of identical corners becoming a maze that seemed to mock your search for Azriel. "This isn't funny anymore," you pleaded, your voice trembling slightly.
As you walked through the labyrinth of paths, you couldn't help but feel a little lost. You had been following Azriel, confident that he wouldn't actually let you get lost among the twists and turns, but now the late winter air was settling into your bones. You wrapped your arms tightly around yourself in an attempt to block out the cold, but it seeped through you with every exhale.
Suddenly, you heard footsteps approaching from around the corner. The tension in your body released as you began to run towards the noise, eager for some company. But as you turned the corner, you were met with disappointment as another dead end greeted you. Frowning in confusion, you turned on your heel and nearly collided with a russet-eyed male. His sharp features and ginger curls caught your attention immediately, and your heart sank at the sight of him.
"Lost?" Philip Vanserra purred to you, his voice sending shivers down your spine.
You forced yourself to appear unafraid and responded with a feigned confidence, though it lacked any real conviction. “No.”
Philip's lips curled into a tight smile as he took a step closer to you. "Seems like that's the point of a maze, isn't it? To get lost?"
You took a cautious step back, feeling the dense foliage pressing against your shoulders and palms. "Azriel and I were just walking through and got split up," you explained quickly.
"Mm," Philip hummed in response as he continued to advance towards you, his hands clasped behind his back.
"He'll be looking for me," you said firmly, hoping the mention of the shadowsinger of the night court would scare off the male who was clearly trying to corner you. But the widening smile on Philip's pale face gave you little hope of that.
"It's quite nice to catch you alone like this," he remarked, closing in even more. "I fear we didn't get a chance to finish our lovely conversation the last time we spoke."
"The one where you accused me of being a whore?" you retorted, feeling a surge of anger rise in your throat.
"I meant no ill will by it," Philip countered smoothly. "I have no problem with pleasure makers, and neither, it seems, do you."
Your brow furrowed at his words, unsure of what he was trying to imply.
“I’ve heard tales of your endeavors in the city, aiding the pleasure makers and their destitute children.” His lips pulled into a calculated frown. “Quite an ambitious pursuit, especially for someone from your humble background.” Your hands gripped tightly on to the foliage, desperately trying to calculate if you had enough strength to push past him. But every scenario ended with you lying on the ground at his feet, or perhaps even worse, trapped beneath his overpowering presence.
“I’ve been keeping myself occupied.” You forced out the words, your heart beating wildly in your chest.
“Indeed.” He replied, inching closer until he was almost within reach. “You know,” he began again, one hand reaching forward to inspect his perfectly manicured nails, “I couldn't quite place you when we last met. There was something about you that seemed so... familiar."
You remained silent, willing yourself to calm down as his breath mingled with yours.
"At first," he continued, "I thought I might have seen you at other social gatherings, but as I mentioned before, judging by your lack of etiquette - which seems to have vastly improved, by the way," he sneered at you, "it couldn't have been from there."
He took another step closer, close enough for you to feel the heat of his breath on your face. "So then I delved into my memories because there was something about you that stayed with me. Believe me when I say I have centuries of memories to sift through. But as I peeled back the layers, I realized it wasn't you who was so familiar."
You furrowed your brow, feeling the sharp branches of the maze digging into your skin as you tried to blend into its shadows.
"No," he said with a victorious smile, "It wasn't you that I recognized. It was your mother." Your heart stopped beating altogether. Your blood rushed in your ears as your eyes widened in disbelief.
He chuckled, almost like a predator toying with his prey. "Yes, your dear mother Sile." He lifted a hand to your face, brushing away a stray strand of hair. "You have her eyes and her nose." You recoiled from his touch, trying to shrink away from him.
"You know nothing about my mother," you spat.
“Oh, but I do. In fact, I think your mother spent more time with me than she ever did with you.”
Your breath caught in your throat, the sharp words puncturing something deep inside of you. You could feel your heart pounding against your ribs, like it was trying to break free and escape from this conversation.
“Your mother, for years was my
personal pleasure maker.” He shrugged nonchalantly, his tone dripping with smug satisfaction. “I’m sure she had other clients who paid for her services, but she always made time for me. She wouldn't keep me waiting."
The image of Sile on her hands and knees for him made bile rise in your throat. "But then again, I was always willing to offer the most."
“So you fucked her.” You spat out the words, anger and disgust coursing through your veins. But your voice trembled slightly, betraying the emotions churning inside of you. “She fucked plenty of patrons, what makes you so special?”
He laughed, a sinister sound that grated on your ears. “Oh darling, it's not just about the sex. It’s about power and status.” His eyes glinted with malice as he looked at you. “Don’t tell me you didn’t know how easy it was to get her in front of me? And how little I had to offer in return?”
You turned away from him, feeling as though his presence alone was suffocating you.
“Every time my father would travel to the Night Court, before your precious Rhysand took over and threw it into the sewer, I would come with him. I have so many fond memories of your mother...of her lying beneath me.”
“You’re disgusting.” You hissed at him, unable to hide the revulsion in your voice.
"I don’t think poor Sile would agree.” He smirked, relishing in your discomfort.
“You don’t know what she thought.”
“Mm,” He murmured in agreement. “Indeed. She was a creature of reservation, but so open in other ways." He spread his fingers in a vulgar manner that made your skin crawl even more.
"But after I figured out that you reminded me of her, I couldn't stop thinking about it." He tapped his temple with a finger, as if trying to emphasize his point. "Because you wormed your way into my head. Something just clicked for me when I laid eyes on you those months ago when you were strutting around like
nobility."
You tried to retort with a snide comment, “Glad to see I was able to torment you.” But it only came out as a whisper, weak and
shaky.
“There was something familiar about your scent. Not just your mother's,” he continued, his dark eyes glinting with amusement. “But something else.” His gaze narrowed, searching yours. “Something incredibly familiar and intimate.”
He leaned in even closer, inhaling deeply as you let out an involuntary whimper of fear. “Ah yes, that wonderfully familiar scent.”
Pulling back slightly, he grinned wickedly at you. “You know why it’s so familiar?” He asked, his gaze boring into yours.
Your heart clenched in fear as tears welled up in your eyes, unable to stop them from falling.
“Because it’s also my scent.”
And then your heart shattered completely, the weight of his words crushing you like a tidal wave. Your breath caught in your throat and all the air seemed to leave your lungs in an instant, leaving you gasping for breath as though you had been punched in the gut.
You let out a pitiful whimper, your eyes widening as his feline smile stretched across his face. “Funny, isn’t it? How small the world Mother has made for us.”
“You’re lying.” You hissed back, your voice shaking with disbelief and anger as tears streamed down your cheeks. He leaned back, a satisfied smirk playing on his lips as if he had just plunged a knife into your heart and was reveling in your pain.
“But I’m not.” His tone was almost mocking as he continued, “I went back through those memories, and one in particular stuck out. When I came to visit her and she refused to see me. It was one of the only times she had ever refused. I had been away for a few months, so I assumed she was just cross with me. She did have such a temper, your mother.” He reminisced with a twisted smile. “And so I met with someone else, another one of Titania’s patrons, who didn’t do nearly as good a job as your mother could have. So I left, and didn’t come back for almost a year. And when I did, Sile was more than happy to attend me again. Some sort of renewed passion or vigor of hers.” He paused, his eyes focused on you now. “Can you remind me how old you are?” He asked casually, but you were too overwhelmed with emotion to even respond. “Never mind, we still have so much to fill in on.” He continued, leaning in closer. “And then everything returned to normal. That is until another pleasure maker at Titania’s let me in on a little secret - a bit of jealousy over my special treatment of your mother, I think.” His words were like poison dripping from his tongue as he leaned even closer. “She told me that your mother had gone away for a while, and when she returned she had a newborn babe with her. One who she claimed she didn’t know the father of.” His smirk grew wider, “Interesting isn’t it, how she refused me and then disappeared only to return with a babe?” He shrugged, “But she fucked her way through Velaris, so I didn’t think too much of it and we just continued about our business, so to speak.” You felt your breath trembling as you sank lower into the grass, unable to bear the weight of his words. “Years went by, maybe twenty or so? And one day I show up, and see Sile sitting out on the steps, looking radiant as ever with a small child on her lap. And when your mother looked at me, the fear behind her eyes was tantalizing and delicious, and I just knew that that child was mine.”
Your body sank heavily onto the damp grass, your beautiful gown now stained and wrinkled. The tears that had been threatening to surface finally spilled over as you let out a heart-wrenching sob. Philip, with a smug expression on his face, approached you and crouched down in front of you. His sharp features were illuminated by the moonlight, giving him an eerie glow.
"As any dutiful and proud father would, I approached her, I wanted to hold my child," he began, his voice oozing with arrogance. "I asked to see you. And you came running up, so eager to be held." He shook his head sadly. "But she just couldn't admit the truth. She refused to let me take you."
His words cut deep into your soul like a knife. That you may very well have the cruel blood of this male flowing through you.
"See, I wanted to take you," he continued, his tone dripping with malice. "Raise you in the courts as my own child. Give you power, status, wealth." He smiled at you, but it held no warmth or kindness. "But poor mommy couldn't handle it." He let out a sigh. "I'll admit I may have gotten a bit... aggressive when she told me no. But it's not my fault. She never told me no before so I didn't know how to respond."
He nonchalantly shrugged as if he hadn't just revealed his true nature as a violent and manipulative monster.
"What can I say? I wanted a child, and you were rightfully mine." He casually inspected his nails, showing no concern for the pain he was causing you.
"But then she made the stupid decision to run from me," he said with disgust in his voice. "What an unfortunate choice."
"You killed her," you spat at him through gritted teeth.
He shook his head, a look of mock surprise on his face. "Kill her? No, no, I would never do that to her. I'm not a monster, especially not to the mother of my child." He let his fingers trail down your chin and you recoiled in disgust.
"Don't touch me," you shouted at him, your voice trembling with rage and fear.
He looked at you intently, his eyes roaming over your features. "Mm, so much like your mother, aren't you?" he mused to himself. "Such a shame. You could have grown up in a grand manor, living a life of luxury and privilege. And instead, she left you out in the woods to rot and die... or so I heard."
You couldn't hold back the gut-wrenching sobs that tore through your body.
He leaned in close, his lips brushing against your ear as he whispered seductively, "But isn't it nice that we can be a family now?" You pushed him away with all your strength, but as you did so, he planted a cold and forceful kiss on your cheek. "I'll be seeing you around, my darling," he said before standing up straight and walking away into the darkness, leaving you alone with your shattered heart and soul.
You curled into yourself, your entire body trembling as heavy sobs wracked your body. Your cries echoed through the maze, startling birds from their perches and sending them fluttering away in a flurry of feathers. The sound that escaped your lips was primal and raw, a guttural wail that sent birds scattering from the nearby maze. Every very inch of your body burned with rage, heat radiating off of you in waves as your mind raced with overwhelming emotions. Fear gripped you like a vice, its icy fingers digging into every fiber of your being. You fought back screams that threatened to escape, feeling as though you were under attack. Desperately, you grabbed handfuls of your own hair, trying to ground yourself as the screams turned into frightened, broken whimpers.
Hunched over, head buried in your knees, you fought to steady your rapidly unraveling body before it tore itself apart from the inside out.
The chaos and confusion engulfed you, blurring your vision and numbing your senses. You were lost in a never-ending maze of terror, alone and helpless.
You could hear Azriel's desperate cries for your name echoing through the maze. But it was no use trying to call back; your voice was suffocated by the weight of it all, leaving you huddled in a corner with only soft screams escaping your trembling lips. Finally, after what seemed like an eternity, Azriel burst through the maze and caught sight of you. He rushed towards you on his knees, calling out your name with a mix of relief and fear in his voice. His hands cupped your face, searching for any signs of injury as he frantically tried to pull you up and out of your state.
"Y/N," he gasped, "baby, I'm here. You’re safe." His voice was laced with both relief and heart-wrenching fear as he took in the scene before him. And then he scented it it; the source of your terror, standing just moments ago where he now knelt.
A mixture of emotions flashed across his face - disbelief, anger, helplessness - until finally concern settled in as he realized of who had been standing before you.
Azriel's touch on your body was frantic and rushed, as if trying to assure himself that you were still there, physically unharmed. "Love," he repeated urgently, "please look at me." But you couldn't lift your gaze from the ground, keeping your head buried between your knees as you rocked back and forth.
"What happened?" Azriel's voice grew more enraged with each passing second as he struggled to understand what had caused this breakdown. "Did he hurt you?" He bristled with fury, ready to unleash his wrath. "If he laid a hand on you, I swear to the Mother..." his threat trailed off as he tried to soothe you with his touch.
"Talk to me, Y/N," he implored, his desperation evident in his broken voice. "Whatever happened, we can work through it together." He shifted down beside you, trying to meet your eyes hat darted away from his.
"Please," he whispered, pulling you closer with a hand on your arm and one on your back.
As Azriel's warmth enveloped you, you finally became aware of how cold you were, shivering uncontrollably. In a gentle gesture, he removed his suit jacket and draped it over your shoulders.
Your mind was still consumed by a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions. Each memory and fear was more overwhelming than the last, leaving you unable to process anything except for the repeated words of Philip that still echoed in your ears. It wasn't until you took a deep breath that you were able to meet Azriel's pleading gaze, filled with tears and concern. And with just three words, you shattered his heart and your own into a million pieces: "He's my father."
