today i learned that we weebs are responsible for the existence of the .ass file type. #heritage
#花話#i actually learned this yesterday i've just been cracking myself up over the 'hashtag-heritage' thing ever since#.ass is a subtitle file btw!!! they're what make the really pretty ones with the elaborate typesetting and positioning n stuff#i always thought they did that shit by burning the fonts into the video via aftereffects or smth but it turns out#that while you could burn an ass file to a video for hardsubbing you can apparently just. like it's a text file you can use a text editor#and also turn them off when watching your stuff if you wish and god i was so surprised when i realized you could do that#with the pretty subtitles bc when using online streaming the soft subs were usually so ugly#anyway through a series of wacky hijinks i've ended up coding a subtitle file type converter these last few hours#and in looking up the standards for how .srt .ass and .vtt files are formatted i learned this gem#and you know what!!!! it makes soooo much sense#of course we weebs went off and made a file type for elaborate subtitle styling and positioning and timing#the intersection of art and technology in the weeb fan sphere is actually pretty cool!! there's niche ass software for so much shit#bc of the tendency of weebs to be into tech and stuff#in my spelunkinh around the old web i've also found a bunch of old specialized scanlation software from the 2000s!!! that's so cool!!!!#i just use a notes program and photoshop but they were out there in 2004 or so making photo editors that#could not only open up and edit multiple images in sequence you could page through but also load up your translation txt file#and i think also had specialized tools for cleaning text bubbles and stuff#and also obviously correcting scan issues and straightening things out AND THIS IS SO COOL!!!!#like we did that!! that's how things were done before i got into anime!!! back when i was a little kid; before i was even rlly sentient!!!!!

Danny as a popular ghost-hunting streamer and Tim as his (secretly smitten) tech-savvy boyfriend
Danny: Soooo, how did the new setup look on stream? 👀 Tim: Flawless. Your transitions are smoother than Nightwing on a trapeze. Danny: Thanks! …Wait, was that a compliment or shade at Dick? Tim: Yes.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Danny: Dude, someone in the chat said my ghost puns are cringe. Tim: They’re right. Danny: Rude. I thought you loved me for my humor. Tim: I love you despite your humor. Big difference.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Group Chat: "BatFam + Phantom"]
Dick: Wait, Danny’s a streamer? Like… famous famous? Danny: Yeah, just hit 1M subs last week! 😎 Jason: How do you even ghost hunt on stream? Danny: I vibe with the ghosts. Sometimes literally. Tim: [uploads spreadsheet of Danny’s analytics] His audience engagement rate is 37%. Insane. Damian: You’re dating a YouTuber. Have you no dignity? Tim: Says the kid with a secret animal rescue TikTok. Damian: …
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Danny streaming with Tim in the background]
Danny: Alright chat, today we’re exploring an abandoned warehouse! Should be super haunted. Tim (off-camera): Or just structurally unsafe. Danny: …Ignore my very responsible boyfriend. We’re doing this. Chat: WE LOVE TIM!!! Danny: I thought this was my stream. 😒
Tim: I saw you fell through a floor last stream. Care to explain? Danny: Ghost-proof floors aren’t a thing, babe. Tim: And neither is common sense, apparently.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Chat watching a rare collab stream]
Danny: Okay, Tim is joining us for this stream because chat kept asking! Chat: TIMMMMM!!! 🥰🥰🥰 Danny: What the heck, I’m literally right here. Tim: [flawlessly hacks into ghost-detection software on stream] Chat: TIM IS THE BEST. 😍 Danny: I can literally fly.

As a 5th-Semester Animation Student, I am surprised at how little I actually yell about the animation of this Show.
Tumblr media
You guys-
You guys have no idea the actual genius of 9 Story Entertainment and BrownBag Films (The Production and Animation Studio for the Wild Kratts Episodes)
First of all. This is not traditional 2D animation.
This is Cut-Out Animation, also known as 2D Rigged Animation or Puppet Animation. Other shows you might be familiar with that use this technique are Bluey, Hilda, Rick and Morty, or the Big Hero 6 TV Show. There are more but these came to my mind first.
Cut Out Animation can be very limiting, because you work with 2D sprites in a 3D environment almost. The Tech Artists, sometimes called Character Builders, are the ones that take the design of the characters and creatures and build a 2D skeleton of sorts, putting bones inside of the png drawing and allowing it to move. It might sound easy, but trust me when I say it is a tiring process and the node-view is horrifying, haha.
I don't know if people would care for an actual deep-dive into the animation of the show, because believe me, I can talk a lot about it, as someone who is familiar with the animation technique, the technical/character building aspects of it, as well as someone who has actually access to the Software the Animation Studio is using to make these episodes (I kid you not when I say that I am in possession off all the tools to make my own Wild Kratts episode, minus the backgrounds because I hate doing those)
For those that care, THIS is what the animator sees before the episode gets finished, lol
Say hi to "Chad", he was part of the Shortfilm I made with some others in my third Semester at uni.
Tumblr media
The purple plots are controllers with which you move the character around.
The green lines and dots are deformers which make the character able to bend and stretch.
Also, the thing in the right window is the beloved node view, or at least a small aspect of it. All these small squares have meaning and I won't even try to explain
Tumblr media
While Cut Out Animation isn't my strong suit (Traditional 2D and 3D animation is) I would still be down to talk more about it if anyone cares to listen, lol. Even beyond the software capabilities, the show is actually very interesting to look at from a production standpoint and I would love to just talk more about the animation in general because let me tell you, it is much better than people give it credit for!

Here’s an short unsuccessful test I did today; attempting to create an animation in a program I quite literally have ZERO experience with using ahaha :’)
Storytime/long ramble (unimportant):
I wanted to be like the “cool kids” and shift out of my comfort zone—no more relying solely on FlipaClip! Gotta branch out to a more effective program (ideally one that has an interface resembling animation software used directly in industry work)! I’ve seen people make good use of AlightMotion and figured it’s worth a shot!….that goal quickly fell apart <<
There’s definitely a wide variety of tools and especially emphasis on built-in editing features. I was intimidated by the sheer amount of mechanics going on at first, but gradually you get used to navigating stuff (even if some stuff I’m still trying to figure out the purpose of lmao). The only issue is that (to me at least) AlightMotion seems to handle tweening better then frame-by-frame animation. Which immediately lands me in a predicament of sorts since uh…can’t say I’m good at tweening. That would require me to actually finish coloring characters/have the ability to polish things using clean linework :P
Tweening (from my perspective) is about making something visually appealing by rigging separated assets of characters (like you would for puppets) rather then the whole. Or alternatively, some people tween by slightly moving the same drawn lines around on a singular drawing…so TLDR the exact opposite of frame-by-frame. I’m not an illustrator, I’m a storyteller. I can only manage rough line work with uncolored motions. Usually the smooth flow of frame-by saves me, else it would all look rather unfinished. I know where my strengths and my weaknesses lie; I’ve given AlightMotion a shot, but unfortunately it’s not gonna be solving the FlipaClip replacement problem 🥲
Was still beneficial challenging myself to play around with an unfamiliar environment! It’s a step in the right direction to encourage myself to try different things/figure out what works or doesn’t. If my patience didn’t wear thin, I’m sure I could’ve attempted authentic tweening instead of trying to push the program to work with frame-by-frame (it kept crashing, lagging, and pixelating while I tried to force it to comply with my methods. Think it’s safe to assume it doesn’t like me fighting against tweening lol). Who knows! Might return to AlightMotion in the future or might not. Depends on how adventurous or up for a challenge I’m feeling :3
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Also goes without saying that online video tutorials would have probably helped—I’m just stubborn & prefer taking hands on approach sometimes. Learning any new program is gonna be overwhelming and scary at first, it is normal! I don’t think anything bad about AlightMotion. Just not for me at the moment. Was fun to play with while it lasted

Here's your regular service reminder that $48k/year sounds like a dream come true to people who have never made a living off their art or comics before, until you factor in the following:
Cost of assistants which is out-of-pocket (some creators literally don't hire assistants because of this which makes the process of meeting their deadlines even harder)
Cost of additional tools necessary to making webtoons and meeting deadlines, such as paying for drawing software, 3D models, etc.
Cost of emergency services such as healthcare are not covered by WT, so if your health deteriorates while you're working on your comic (which it often does for many creators whose bodies are destroyed from working long hours at a desk 7 days a week), WT will not help you.
No paid vacation time, no paid sick leave, no accommodations for people with kids, disabilities, etc. meaning if you have to take time off, WT will not be covering it.
Speaking of vacation time, Webtoons ONLY pays creators for completed and submitted episodes, meaning they will not pay you for pre-production time leading up to a series release OR have your back when you have to go on hiatus. Some creators manage multiple series to make ends meet and avoid stretches of unpaid hiatuses (IIRC I believe KitTrace does this with Nevermore and Shiloh rotating on and off hiatus one at a time) and others simply have to go without pay relying solely on their Patreons and other forms of income when they go on hiatus. And, as we've seen in the past, when they return from hiatus is often up to Webtoons, not them.
That $48k is basically just an average ballpark of what Webtoons pays creators for a season of content, and for those who recall, FastPass earnings are not given to creators until they make back that payment.
It's really hard to get people to FastPass when Webtoons is deliberately not advertising your series and, in some cases, outright SABOTAGING your attempts to advertise.
I don't even know if that $48k is before or AFTER taxes, I'm assuming before considering this is a self-employment contract, meaning you likely have to put away a good few thousand for taxes depending on your state tax rate and what you're able to write off. This also includes having to track assistant expenditures for filing.
The 60-80+ hour weeks many creators are having to pull to meet their deadlines turns that $48k/year into an ASTOUNDING drum roll ... $11 - $15/hour! Which is just barely over minimum wage in many states, and absolutely 100% not a living wage in most! And that's BEST CASE scenario in which you don't pay an assistant, don't suffer any health expenses, don't pay for 3D models / software, and POSSIBLY don't pay your taxes. Yaaaaay! 😒🖕
TL : DR $48k/year hasn't been a salary worth bragging about since 2005 ESPECIALLY not for such high-demand specialized work like this, fuck you Webtoons <3

Random post-canon tlc headcanons I have
Since Kai has lived in New Beijing his entire life, he decides he wants a change. So a few years after they get married, he and Cinder move to Japan. They return to New Beijing when they have important political events, but they can mostly carry out their normal routines from Japan. Although they don't expect him to, Torin naturally follows them there. They live in Japan for a few years but move back when their children start school. After their kids grow up, they spend the rest of their lives living in different areas of the Commonwealth, but always return to New Beijing after a few years. And as royalty, they have plenty of fancy castles, manors and chalets to check out.
When Cress has had her fill of travelling after several years, she goes to university and earns a PhD in Software Engineering, making her a Doctor. The crew like to jokingly ask her medical questions because "she's the doc," ignoring the fact that Jacin is the actual medical doctor.
When deciding what name she wants to put on her degree, she toys with the idea of Dr. Darnel-Thorne, partly because Dr. Darnel is still the name widely associated with her father on Luna, but also because she jokes that there should be "at least one Thorne who actually earned their title legitimately."
Cinder and Kai take turns picking up and dropping their kids off at school every day. Although they could simply send a hover or a chauffeur to do it, it's important to them that their kids always know that they will be the ones waiting for them.
Cress and Thorne have identical twin daughters--one has the Lunar gift, and the other doesn't. Since neither of them really understand the gift themselves, they ask Cinder to train her to use it.
Whenever the crew reunites and they have to somehow wrangle all the children present, Cress and Winter get super into organising games and arts and crafts for them. It entertains them for a while, but they soon get bored. Cress and Winter are racking their brains for something else they can do when Jacin starts showing them medical diagrams and teaching them interesting facts about the body. But normally serious Jacin is animated and lively as he teaches the kids, keeping them enthralled. The parents are all impressed, except for Thorne, who is just grossed out by the medical terms.
Cress has a pair of long grabbers that she uses to pull stuff down from tall shelves when Thorne isn't around.
Scarlet teaches her kids French; Cinder and Kai teach their kids Mandarin. So when their boys are young and playing together, they sometimes forget the Universal word for something and only remember it in their other language, leading to high-pitched 5-year-olds arguing because they don't understand each other, rushing to their parents to 'tell on them', and Scarlet and Cinder trying understand what the hell they are talking about amongst tears and yells of mangled Universal, Mandarin and French.
Cress is the only one to call him 'Carswell,' not Thorne. When people ask Thorne if it bothers him, he winks and quips, "If I want to stay her husband, I have to let her call me whatever she wants," which leads Cress to roll her eyes and huff. He does actually like that she is the only one to use his name. Except for when he asks how she is and she says, "I'm swell, Carswell."
Just as Thorne prophesied when he said Wolf and Scarlet would have "a litter of baby wolf cubs," Scarlet and Wolf have six kids: four boys, two girls. The first isn't planned, the next two are, then the fourth isn't planned. They are convinced that four is perfect and their family is complete...until eight years after their last one is born, they have a surprise. Then after that baby, they chose to have another, because they don't want the youngest to feel like the odd one out.

hi! do you have any tips on how to make teenagers look like actual teenagers? venus looks so good!
Tumblr media
hi!! so i don't use the preteen mod, but i do use the shortest height preset from this set by luumiasims. so far there really isn't a huge animation issue because her friends are using the same preset and other animations with adults/kids (like hugging) don't look that bad. however, i'm noticing that there are some clipping issues when trying to pose her, though. i hate how teens are the same height as adults and i really wanted to play out the preteen/early teen life stage with the girls. other than the height preset, i think i just made her eyes bigger and cheeks fuller. i think adding blush and braces also make her look younger. i try to use hairstyles and accessories that look "younger", but tbh i'm having a hard time finding clothes for her atm. here's a photo to show what the shortest height preset looks like standing next to an adult and a child. i hope this was helpful!
Tumblr media
more asks under the cut!!
Tumblr media
byeee this is so funny. i forget i never really posted the beginning parts of this save so not many know the lore of these three. oh god, i'm gonna yap for a bit. short story of their relationship is eva & kato got together in their early 20s and were going to have a son named saturn, but sadly eva had pregnancy complications and they lost the baby. unfortunately, it made things really difficult in their relationship and they decided to break up. during their time apart, eva meets judah and falls in love, but she ends up cheating on him multiple times with kato (even the night before she got married to judah ) and they literally wouldn't stay away from each other. years later after both girls were born, she confesses to judah and they take time apart. i know what you are probably thinking, how tf does this end in the big happy family we have now? eva basically made it known that kato is her soulmate and she could never really be done with him. they would have never broken up if not for the loss of their son, but she was also so in love with judah and the family they had created together. she proposed the throuple idea (lmao the audacity) and both kato and judah were veryyyy hesitant, but ultimately, they both loved her so much that they decided being with her was worth it. at first, they decided to just move in together and kept their relationships with eva separate. ngl it was such a weird and tense time in my game and they would constantly get jealous/upset with each other. i ended up using a mod allowing more than one partner and things settled down. after some time living together the guys realized they actually fw each other and they were lowkey bestiess. they have been together #challengers style a few times, but they usually tend to be romantic with eva separately. i know it's a weird situation, but now i'm happy with how things turned out. no one holds any ill feelings towards each other and all three of them just really enjoy doing life together and parenting the girls the best they can. there's soo much more to it, but i tried to keep it as short as i could lol.
Tumblr media
totally!! you don't have to credit me, but i would like to seee
Tumblr media
hmm i'm not really sure. i normally label my sims as maxis-mix. maybe more alpha? i think i prefer alpha skin details and clothes over mm. my build/buy cc is a good mix. it's nice not having to force myself into one style
Tumblr media
ty :)) i don't really play legacy challenges. having rules sometimes ruins the gameplay for me, though i do think they are super useful when it comes to using/playing with certain features of packs that i wouldn't mess with otherwise. i tried nsb 2.0, but i'm still on gen one lmao. sorry i don't really have any to recommend.
Tumblr media
hi!! it's actually really easy if you have sims4studio and a photo editing software. i use photoshop. first i find either a painting or photo frame that i like, then i export the diffuse map in s4s. i take the png file and basically paste my photos on top of whatever was in the frame (in photoshop) and then i import it back into s4s & save. if you want an in-depth tutorial i could definitely make one, but there are also a lot of great ones here on tumblr and youtube.
Tumblr media
had to ask my bf about this lol. i have 0 idea what any of this means:
cpu: amd ryzen 5 3600, ram: 16gb ddr4, gpu: rtx 3060, 1tb m.2 nvme ssd (x2), motherboard: asus prime b550-plus, 650w power supply
Tumblr media
i think i've had this account since 2018, but i didn't start to really use it until around 2022. i was suuuuper involved in the simsta community at the time. i was always kind of intimidated by tumblr (and the people here) and didn't really know how to use it. now that just seems funny.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
well, first i think i should mention that i absolutely do get bored and experience burn out. sometimes i don't touch the game for months. i feel like this is common and i know a lot of my friends experience it too, so don't feel bad about it.
not sure how great my cas advice is considering i feel like i make the same sim over and over, but one thing that helps me keep things fresh is using cc, presets, and aesthetics that i don't normally use. i find myself using the same skin details a lot and things can get boring. use that hair that you never touch, try out different aesthetics, mix and match different skin details together, utilize different sliders, pick a fun hair color, try different makeup styles!
when it comes to keeping gameplay interesting, my advice is to try not to micromanage everything. i knowww it can be difficult, especially if you have a certain storyline in your head, but i feel like if you control every little thing, it's easy to lose steam and things can get boring or unenjoyable fast. it's really fun to let your sims tell their own story and it keeps you guessing what will happen next, especially when they decide to do things you wouldn't normally choose for them. for example, when eva had her pregnancy complications it took everything in me not to cheat it away, but some of my sims wouldn't even have been born had i not let things play out. another example is when she decided to be unfaithful. it's not something i'd normally want my sims to do, but it created a whole different story that has been so interesting to play. also let your sims have flaws! not everyone is a saint. let them be mean, let them fail, and let them develop their own personalities as you play. i pay attention to their whims and choose to do the things they want. when my sims age up, i like to use the randomizer on their traits and pretend it's fate. now this isn't to say i don't have some storylines or things that i'd like them to do planned out, i just wouldn't recommend planning their entire life out all at once, you know? but this is what keeps things interesting for me, it may not be for everyone :)
as for the right time to take screenshots, it depends on your personal preference and what you want photographed. i personally take screenshots of my sims doing everything so much that i feel like a proud parent. every once in a while, i go through my screenshot folder from the beginning of my save and watch everything back like a movie :'). when it comes to actually posing my sims for a screenshot, i like to keep it to a minimum because setting everything up can sometimes take me out of gameplay mode lol. i really only pose them when i want to take photos to decorate their home or if there's a pose i really want to use to tell a story.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
hi!! this is so nice :')) thank you!
i don't really have anything specific when it comes to posting on tumblr, other than using hashtags that help others see your posts. i don't care about numbers or anything like that. i post whenever i want, sometimes multiple times a day and sometimes once a month. i feel like as long as you are posting what you love, the right audience/community will find you. definitely interact with people in the community! there's so many creative people here that inspire me all the time. if you have specific questions about how to put sims up for download (like exporting their files) or anything like that, feel free to dm me! i'm happy to help. :)
Tumblr media
ooo okay, so presets help a ton. northernsiberiawinds has some head presets and i use #8 all the time and it gives the head a narrower shape. here is a gif showing how i use sliders to pull the face down because i honestly don't know how to explain it in words and figured a visual would be of more help anyway. hope this helps! <3
