#anti batman: white knight

Batman beyond the white knight is apparently a universe where jason??? Is the first Robin?? And dick uses the name as his stage name until he becomes Robin?? Am I the only one that thinks this is extremely disrespectful??? Like What were you fucking thinking writers??? Just where did the name come from then??? Like where did Robin come from then??? If Dick isn't the first??? Role reversal doesn't mean other people would somehow have a connection to that name. The connection comes from Dick. The meaning comes from Dick. You can't have Robin without Dick. Those two are one and the same. Everything about Robin came from Dick. Everything that made people look at this kid and go, 'What a Boy Wonder! He can do anything.' comes from Dick. Like you can't have Nightwing without Clark Kent because that's the origin. That's where it came from. Those are its bones. Is anyone else so tired of seeing things just get taken and taken and taken from Dick without any regard to his character or legacy?

Edit: there's a reply in the reblogs I'd like to address. The idea of jason being batman's first sidekick- it actually doesn't work. It won't work with Tim, Steph, or Duke either. The whole reason batman gets a sidekick is because bruce takes in Dick and the reason why he takes Dick in is because he sees himself in Dick in a way he'll never see himself in the others. Jason is a poor kid from the streets, bruce will never identify with that. Dick is a prodigious circus star. Bruce will also, never identify with that.

But.

Dick has just watched his parents get murdered right in front of him due to a senseless act of violence, his entire life changes in an instant in the worst way possible, and he's all alone and hurting and angry and shocked and will blame himself for not being able to save them and that- that Bruce knows intimately. That is why he takes Dick in. They are the same, 17 or so years apart. If you took Dick out of the equation, they never met, but jason still steals the tires off the batmobile- Bruce would just get those tires back and tell the kid to go home or take him to a shelter or something. Bruce would care about him the way he cares about all of Gothams street kids or orphans, but not anything more than that. There's nothing special about Jason until he knows and cares for Dick, because Jason reminds him of Dick. And Dick opens his heart up in a way no one else has managed since his parents died. The next closest is probably Clark.

And being the first sidekick, really being the first child hero, is obviously a daunting undertaking, a lot of responsibility, something that requires perfection in order to be taken seriously by the adult heroes and the public at large. If Robin had been mediocre, no, if Robin had been just 'good', there would've been a lot more pushback, an outcry, a dismissal of batman himself from the OG heroes. The first sidekick has to be Perfect.

Who is literally known for being a perfectionist? For working himself to the bone but seemingly effortlessly? For always knowing the answer, the right action to take, to read and adjust himself and others accordingly in order to produce the best team effort, who has an athleticism and physicality Bruce instantly realizes he, himself, does not possess? Who is known for being the poster child of the ideal child hero/sidekick that grows into the ideal adult hero as well? Dick is the only one that could've been the first sidekick. He was So Good at being a hero while being a child, he opened up the door for other kids to do the same.

You can't switch these roles up without changing something fundamental to the characters. And then. They wouldn't be those characters.

Maybe these kinds of fics are rare in DCxDP, but I would love to see how it handles Danny and friends thrown/mixed into the world of the DC Black Label Batman, where Bruce is either so relentless in cleansing crime from Gotham's streets that almost everybody turns on him (The White Knight saga) or so angry and ruthlessly fucked up from his parents being murdered that no one wants to associate with him (The Imposter).

Jason Todd:

Robin, Jason Todd, THE hated child character. In the 1980s, Batman comics had become increasingly dark and gritty. According to editor O'Neil himself, the courted audience wasn't kids but 19-40 year old men with disposable income. Batman's child sidekick, Robin, was offensively campy and childish. Fans called him wimpy, annoying, dumb, bratty, etc. Also people complained that Batman acting like an affectionate dad was unmanly and gay. Robin acts violent and emotional and people are like "ew he's so childish and emotional"—and then Batman literally acts just as murderously and emotionally within literally the same exact story and people are like "wow he's so dark and tortured". So in 1988 (after brutalizing Batgirl to get rid of her for being too bright and nice and kid-friendly), DC held a paid poll for fans to vote for Robin to live or die. O'Neil claims he heard a fan (a grown man with a dayjob as a lawyer) programmed a phone to spam kill votes. One fanguy claimed that he sold his Mercedes to buy kill votes (probably an exaggeration but still). By less than 1% margin, the vote decided to kill Robin in a spectacularly violent way. Anyway the 1989 Batman movie brought in a huge wave of new child comicbook fans who liked the new Robin (a very cool teenage high school Robin with a driver's license and a girlfriend), and DC started a separate Robin-less Batman series called Legends of the Dark Knight to make the anti-Robin writers and fans happy. But to this day, many fans agree it was a good idea to kill off the other Robin so that his foolish death reminds other characters to never be childish and stupid again. Bonus: the current Robin (usually a traumatized 10-year-old) has also been facing some pretty loud hatred for over 15 years.

you know i think the only recent development with jason i've actually liked is the hint that, kidding or not, the joker considers jason his son in some way, like he's just as responsible for the 'birth' of the red hood as batman is.

and like. it's true! he is! joker taking pride in creating a weapon (loose cannon it may be) that psychologically shatters batman makes sense! and it's absolutely horrifying in a way that i wish was used to fuck with jason, and scare bruce, more!

jason is a meticulous and logical planner with a large skillset, like batman. jason is also a manipulative sadist, like the joker. having him weave in and out as ally, rival and enemy, embodying both of them at different points in the narrative, is a goldmine that DC unfortunately passed up by making him an angsty anti-hero in the New52.

(i didn't care for the way grant morrison wrote jason, but he did seem aware of this possibility. morrison's jason horrendously unfashionable ensemble merged design elements of the joker and batman far more obviously (the commitment to the original pill helmet + a more traditional 'superhero' suit with batman's boots, logo and cape but an inverted mostly white colour scheme).

additionally, sasha as scarlet brings both robin and harley quinn to mind - a younger student and sidekick, as well as a severely mentally ill young girl who has been manipulated by a predatory man and then styled herself after her partner (right down to her name; scarlet riffs on the red hood the same way harley quinn is themed after the joker, where robin was purely of dick's creation and drew on his own heritage).

jason and sasha were an intentional foil to dick and damian - 'alternate heroes' making use of social media and soaking in as much attention as possible in contrast to batman and robin sticking to the shadows. where nightwing named himself after kryptonian myth, a symbol of hope (connecting him not just to batman, but to superman), jason names himself for the man that dragged him into the muck. it's great! these two as enemies is fantastic! (and also probably set a precedent that makes deciding tim's new superhero identity extremely difficult)

this may also be what inspired lobdell to give red hood the red bat on his chest in the new52, but given the way jason got that suit i don't think that was the intention necessarily - though the idea of jason as the joker's intentional successor in some way was definitely on his mind given the events of jason's zero year chapter, so i guess we can thank him for that.)

i think it's one of the reasons i like jason's white streak so much. it's an interesting and unique design element that sets him aside from the other bats, but personally it reminds me of joker falling into the vat of acid at ACE chemicals. just as the joker was reborn as a new person, physically changed forever, so too was jason todd in the waters of the lazarus pit.

(my favourite design element in gotham knights is the addition of a glasgow smile to jason todd, the implication being that the joker carved it there. rather than the 'J' on his face from arkham knight that marks him as property, the smile makes it seem like the joker was in some way trying to make jason 'like him'.)

obviously, its nicer if jason manages to avoid becoming a raving lunatic like the joker and doesn't conform to batman's ideology - straddling the line is probably the ideal for his character design, but an eventual awareness of the fact he's doing that would be so goddamn interesting.

all this to say: i miss batman reborn :( i wish it had more time to cook :( please make jason an antagonist again he's more fun that way :(

The tiktok era are at it again saying that people who dislike the dark knight for its whole spying shit have bad media literacy, because the story criticizes batman for this. Except that’s a misunderstanding of media literacy.

The story can play at criticizing batman all it wants, he’s batman. He’s not going to be made the bad guy properly. The man he’s invading privacy to spy on is the joker, the most unambiguously evil person he could have gone after.

This event has no serious negative consequences that would make us tangibly feel like he’s done the wrong thing. The narrative justifies him by creating the most obviously black and white situation.

No one cares about the jokers rights and no one seriously gets affected by the loss of their rights either. And since it’s batman we can be sure he won’t use it to punish socialist thinkers or monitor civil rights activists, meaning that the narrative has turned a violation of your fourth amendment rights into an anti-hero like necessary evil.

Just because this take is not what the story is trying to present itself as doesn’t mean that’s not what it’s doing by having one of the most famous superheroes use NSA surveillance on one of the most dastardly supervillains.

I'm sorry for asking too many questions but I really like your takes on Jason both pre/post crisis. So, hypothetically if pre-crisis Jason died like post-crisis Jay and got resurrected how do you think would he react? And if you can create a scenario, how do you think Bruce , Dick and Jason's reunion would play out?

these are some of the loveliest questions i got in a long while, please don't apologise!

an uncharacteristically short answer from me though (so that was a lie)... i think pre-crisis jay would have a much easier time with it because of 1. his awareness of the dichotomy of his identities. 2. his secure attachment style. and he would be able to bury robin without burying himself whole as a result.

i presume it's quite clear that i'm not a proponent of "jason died as robin therefore his identities were forever blended" theory. i very much believe that his identities were always blended.

the above is true for post-crisis jason of course. but as i said many many times, pre-crisis jay is hyper-aware of his secret identity instead. in batman #379, he admits he might be robin more than he is just jason at this point, but he tells natalia "i've been jason my whole life. robin has a lot of catching up to do!" he's very much capable of compartmentalizing. so i think, perhaps, while obviously still tragically traumatised, he would be able to label his death more as a "robin" issue and hence retire as a vigilante, leaving this life behind. in this world, robin might be dead, but jason todd was brought back to life.

this also aligns with the fact that i don't think he would seek revenge on bruce. that's mostly because, again, pre-crisis jay has secure attachment style. he was, of course, undeniably remarkably close with bruce (we get much more insight into their relationship than we ever get with post-crisis jay), and he was distressed when they were separated, but he still felt secure enough to, for example, propose that he will get adopted by nocturna in order to further their investigation. my general point is simply that pre-crisis jason never went to such lengths to look for a parent that would care for him; on the other hand, he once ran away simply because he was displeased with bruce.

so he loves bruce plenty, sure, and we also know that he is afraid of losing him (there's an issue with scarecrow where it's depicted that i can't remember the number of rn unfortunately) but he also always had more of an independent streak. and of course, he's a child, but between him and post-crisis jay, he is more likely to find his feet without bruce. and i suppose, ultimately, if he suffered too much, maybe he would even take a decision to remain separated. i'm thinking of something the white knight ending-esque, wherein at it's indicated that jason went away and lives on his own, probably as a civilian. (before the awful continuation ruined this)

this decision would make sense because at the end of the day, pre-crisis jason understands that there's no way of being a part of this family without becoming entangled in vigilantism. not because bruce wouldn't want that; bruce would love that and even deludes himself a bit that it's possible! but because that means being denied being a part of such a significant chunk of their life. it's a type of isolation one way or another.

and the reunion, if it happened, i think it would be a kind of event wherein you can see that everyone has exhausted themselves with grief, and they don't know if they can find a way to make this love alive again. possibly pre-crisis jason would also develop an anti-vigilante attitude, since he's always been likely to be more critical, and it would show, making his relationship with bruce and dick difficult. unlike post-crisis jason, he's not nearly as emotional, but he can be bitter and passive aggressive. and i think he would. so they would stay in a bit distant, almost estranged relationship. but i think the love would still be there. and they would still try. but with robin actually buried, an unlikely corpse remains between them.
