Songs that Remind me of Jikook Part 1

While we wait impatiently for the Jikook travel show, I thought it might be fun to share song recs that remind us of Jikook beyond the classics: There For You, all the other GCF songs, Own It, Body Electric, Serendipity, Magic Shop, Still With You, ect. You can use these songs to add to your playlist or when you listen to them, you can think of Jikook too! I have three recommendations in this post.

1. Agora Hills by Doja Cat.

I know Doja is controversial and so is her partner BUT this song bangs y’all. The beat is nasty and the lyrics are so so Jikook coded (to me). Screen shot of one of the most Jikook-esque parts of the song but honestly the verses fit so well too. We know how much Jungkook and Jimin love to brag on each other and gush over each other. And sometimes they even get a little wild *cough Rosebowl and hickey gate and footsies*

2. Call it What You Want by Taylor Swift

This song is the only one in Taylor’s discography that is extremely Jikook coded to me. I screenshotted my favorite part but again, the whole song screams Jikook to me. The “trust him like a brother” lyric feels like a dig to anyone who screams that Jikook are brothers as a form of coping with the fact that they definitely aren’t. And I love the whole concept of Call It What You Want being about speculation about a romantic relationship and the two lovers don’t care you can call their bond whatever you want but they will still love and support each other. If that’s not Jikook idk what is.

3. Coma by Caroline Polachek

Okay, hear me out with this one because if you haven’t heard of Caroline Polachek (she’s the least mainstream on this list) then I promise you are missing out. Caroline is amazing. Shes definitely experimental, so if that isn’t your thing then you probably won’t like this gorgeous 5 minute song, but I’m obsessed with it. Her voice is so ethereal, the instrumental is busy but addicting and the lyrics are simple but effective as hell. Overall, the song gives a wholesome lovey dovey vibe that truly feels like you are floating. It reminds me of Jikook because when I listen to this I imagine this is how they feel being with each other for so many years and truly “I am you, you are me”. If you give this one a chance and love it, let me know. I stan Caroline so hard and think everyone should experience her genius. Her whole album Desire, I Want To Turn Into You top to bottom is an art pop masterpiece.

I kinda wanna write something up properly reflecting on my time at Japanese language school but the main thing I've learned from being here has probably been how I best learn a language and what I'm going to keep using to continue studying after I leave, especially since I signed up for the N3 in December.

Not that I'm an authority on learning Japanese in any way but in case these help someone else I figure I'll make a list of what I'm finding most useful (w web/Google Play links where applicable!) as learning resources. Just an NB for anyone looking for recs, I have ended up paying for most of these services either for additional unlocks or just because they are fully paid but most do at least offer some functionality or a free trial so you can check them out and decide if you also find them worthwhile.

Kanji

I like apps on my phone for this and what I'm using at the moment to prep for kanji tests at school is Kanji Dojo since it lets me create custom lists that can include individual kanji or full words including compound kanji and okurigana and I can set it to review my word lists with writing practise since we get tested on writing kanji not just recognising them (for me these are two _very_ different things and just know I envy you if you can remember how to correctly write a more complex kanji from memory without practising it like crazy beforehand).

On a similar vein, I also really like Kanji Study although its main shortcoming is that you can't add full words to custom lists for writing practise, it's just individual characters. But otherwise I really like all the features and the fact that it as an additional library beyond just the JLPT kanji lists.

If you don't feel the need to learn stroke order/writing then I think the undisputed king of kanji learning is probably Wanikani since it really focuses on teaching you how to see complex kanji in terms of radicals also gives you a lot of vocab on the side. Speaking of which:

2. Vocab

So if you can look up a word for something once and just remember it, great, but if you're like me and have to encounter a word a few hundred million times before it forms a solid part of your instinctive vocabulary then you can't go wrong with plugging into an SRS system regularly. I feel like Anki is the big dog in this space but personally I came to Kitsun first via getting the premium version of it bundled with another service I'll mention later and I really like its web UI. But whichever, really. I know you can add existing lists to your library or make your own custom ones with both of these so solid options.

I'll also note here that both of the services I'm about to discuss in relation to grammar also have vocabulary learning systems on the side, but I particularly like being able to make custom decks for mined vocab really easily using Kitsun (the card generation tool that lets you hook right into Jisho.org's database is very helpful).

3. Grammar

What I've loved most about language school is having teachers explain Japanese grammar points in terms of whatever Japanese we already understand. So while the services that I'm going to list next give text based explanations in English, I also like to try to find YouTube videos where the usage and nuance of grammar is explained in simple Japanese and plenty of examples are given.

I mainly use these because on top of getting an understanding of the grammar point that way, if I want to actually be able to use the grammar smoothly and correctly myself I have to get used to, for example, putting the verbs in the right form on the fly - so again good SRS systems that will drill me on that kind of thing are a real necessity for me.

Currently, I think Bunpro has the most complete grammar library in terms of JLPT coverage however I do think it's worth mentioning what I think is probably their main competition in this space: MaruMori. MaruMori is still adding N3 content and I don't think has anything for N2 or N1 yet at all but given the speed of their development and the amount of features they already have not to mention what is on the roadmap I feel comfortable giving them a rec. The overall style might be on the cutesier, more casual side but I have to say I do actually find the conversational and humourous style of their grammar explanations more engaging and less dry than Bunpro's.

Who are we?

Allow us to introduce ourselves; @navybrat817 (Navy) and @darkficsyouneveraskedfor (Roo). We are writers across fandoms.

Navy writes a range from fluff to dark fics. Her main fandoms are MCU, Sebastian Stan and Chris Evans characters, but has also written for DC.

Roo writes dark fics. Her main fandom is the MCU, however she has also written for DC, GoT, and Chris Evans and Sebastian Stan characters outside of Marvel.

Why are we doing this?

We all want Tumblr to be the community we used to know as writers. We want to feel safe to share and to interact with each other. So, we have come up with a month-long sleepover to bring together the writer community!

What is the sleepover?

The sleepover will be a series of weekly activities aimed towards writers with the goal of sharing and interacting with each other. This will include prompts for writing, challenges to share other writer's works, and leaving meaningful feedback for each other.

We encourage positive feedback, comments, reblogging, and even asks to your fellow writers. Don’t be afraid to branch out beyond your usual circle. We will be providing a list of participating writers at the end of the sign-up period for this purpose.

At the same time, we will be offering tools for inspiration that we recommend you bookmark for future use as well. We will add a resources page shortly once this sleepover is active.

For those who want to get involved on a more communal level, we have a discord! Message either of us for a link to this server. We kindly ask you do not share this link with anyone else as our goal is to make sure that we all feel safe and trust each other.

Haven't seen Malcolm's list yet (though I plan to) but as someone who watched QC I feel like even season 2 of Bridgerton failed when it came to better research and SCREENTIME for the Sharmas. QC has some really blatant issues that I wish they hadn't put in (or explored in the way they did re: Danbury's marriage), and the real-but-actually-fake monarchy backdrop further adds to the confusion, but its one "strength" of sorts was that it was tighter than Bton season 2 in terms of side plots. The side plots make even less sense to me now because you could not pay me to explain to someone what the point of Benedict's art school thing was, or the poorly done Eloise one, or the Featheringtons. I feel like this can even be traced back to season 1 because aside from all the blatant problems, Simon felt like he was sidelined in the last episode and I don't know how to explain why, other than to give significance to Daphne 'understanding' him? Anyway, thanks for the Tom Jones rec

I ended up watching QC with a friend through venues that are comfortable to me. And I’ll be honest, I thought it was kind of complete dog shit and I don’t really get the praise and passes it’s been receiving. Obviously everyone is free to like and dislike what they wish. But….

—the pure manner in which Lady D’s husband is portrayed. Darkest skinned person on the show, and much like Simon’s father, he’s not only a horrible person but depicted as grotesque. She doesn’t want to huge his “giant babies”, they give the actor (who’s a handsome guy irl) fake teeth and weird makeup to make his skin look ashy. He flaps around desperate for white approval when he’s not raping his wife (the darkest skinned woman in the show) in a manner the show plays as comical. Then he dies trying to rape her again. Wow.

—both black female leads end up essentially alone and they hate their kids and are depicted as cold mothers. But hey, they’re strong and dignified TM so who needs love? Not them! I know everyone was laughing at the way Charlotte skimmed over her son sobbing about his dead daughter but it seemed to me a stark contrast to sweet mom Violet who’s just so horny right after her son goes on his honeymoon

—they did an entire episode going over things we’d already seen, but this time with FARMER GEORGE TM torture porn. I found the depiction of his mental illness both laughably under-researched (some theories re: George in real life surround him suffering from bipolar disorder… speaking as someone who has that, actually, I can tell you the show’s version doesn’t have any kind of bipolar disorder I recognize; his symptoms are basically what the plot requires).

—homeboy was barely present in the back half; romance show? What romance show?

—the much promoted gay love story ends in one party alone and the other either gone or dead for no reason

—why did anyone love each other? They would speak a few random sentences and then trope trope trope it’s fine you know what we need? More Danbury rape

I’ll be real, I didn’t see a tighter show. A tighter show would’ve cut the entire present day storyline, which did nothing, and everything to do with Violet (but I guess we needed a white woman to bemoan her horniness to Lady Danbury who’s Beyond That Now).

I don’t have a really great opinion of either of the previous seasons, but they for sure had better leading men (I am begging people to stop comparing Farmer George to Nick Hoult) and at least they weren’t incredibly depressing and quite as rape heavy. Season 1 did have a pivotal rape, but it didn’t have like…. Five comical rapes.

Mr. Malcolm’s List and Tom Jones walk circles around this franchise. Fuck, so did season 1 of Sanditon.

you’re definitely not the only one desperate for a book/poetry collection by him, jo and i have been unsuccessfully manifesting it for AGES. as for book/poetry recs…. it’s quite hard tbh. i don’t think i have read anything that captures the exact same vibe. mary oliver does have poetry that really plays into the nature symbolism and a lot of anne carson’s stuff does have that desperate/consuming/toxic love element (e.g. her verse novel autobiography of red). i also think ocean vuong’s poetry is bursting with emotions, and his novel on earth we’re briefly gorgeous is a lyrical masterpiece (it deals more with the immigrant experience in america and family dynamics though). deathless by catherynne m. valente is beautifully written and does echo some darker notions of love in its story (it’s very much about the vibes). this is how you lose the time war is also very lyrical with a touching love story that reaches through space and time. i just reread it and it was even better on a reread. ((if you’re into (mature) YA with whimsical writing/nature theme/magical elements/people obsessing over each other i can recommend you maggie stiefvater’s the raven cycle series. it lives in my head rent-free.)) but yeah all these are just approximations of some aspects of hozier’s music/songwriting….

I randomly started thinking about gatekeepers in this fandom and it pissed me off all over again.

Why do some people think they get to dictate who is and isn't a metalhead? Do they not realize that that kind of hostility towards newbies in both the Eddie Munson fandom and newbies to metal music in general is what ultimately kills a fandom because it drives away new activity? Or do they want this fandom to die out because new people are getting turned away? Do they really need to feel that superior to someone?

And the irony is: if you're actually GENUINELY a fan of something you WANT AS MANY PEOPLE TO KNOW ABOUT IT AS POSSIBLE!

If you *genuinely* love metal music you're gonna be sending song and artist and playlist recs to anyone who will listen.

A *lot* of people - especially young people - got interested in metal music after/because of Eddie, and who the fuck cares?

I first heard metal music because of School of Rock.

At this point I think the only thing that will satisfy these fucking buzzkill gatekeepers (which, do they also not realize that they're the type of metalheads that the rest of us FUCKING HATE) is if you were born ON STAGE at a fucking METALLICA concert.

ONLY THEN CAN YOU CLAIM TO BE A "TRUE" METALHEAD!

Gatekeepers just move the goal post every time you get close enough that they can no longer gatekeep, so even being born at a metal concert or even being conceived at one wouldn’t satisfy them! They just wanna make others miserable because they have no joy in their lives other than bringing others down, which is reaaaally sad and telling about the kind of people they are. OBBB (Oogie Boogie Bash Bruno) Facts

Because videos are coming out and we’re learning things about this precious bean. Also feel free to add more/link videos because I’m too lazy to go back and do it, sorry >.<

It’s his first time in California but Mirabel told him all about it (she’s been doing meet and greets for a while now and THIS IS SO STINKING CUTE).

He’s out of salt! (Please if you’re going do not give him salt, I’m guessing this is a Disney health and safety thing, same with the reason he’s not wearing flip flops. Why he doesn’t have Jorge’s spackle trowel while Mother Gothel is going around flashing a dagger is beyond me.).

He has 32 rats and usually feeds them empanadas or arepas con queso because of course. They do like candy too since there’s so much of it around.

What does he feed himself? Who knows, when asked what he had for dinner he want off about the rats. Someone get this man a handwich.

Once upon a time his mother asked him to clean the house, but he hates cleaning, so he came up with the character of Jorge - who doesn’t mind it - and cleaned all of Casita! “My Mama Alma was so proud!” :’)

He does hop over cracks!!

Some Less-Known Encanto Word of God

So I’m casually checking Encanto’s TV Tropes page because it’s always a good time, but then I got to Word of God and stumbled across this, uh, detail:

In this podcast, Jared Bush points out that due to the heartbreak and fear that Alma experienced at the riverside after seeing her husband murdered, once she learned of Bruno's powers, she would have found it impossible to resist pressuring him to frequently look into the future for threats and dangers to the Encanto. Thus, the observations that have been made about Bruno having a depressed attitude which led to him seeing bad futures is wrong. It's the opposite, pressure on Bruno to always look for the worst the future has to offer is what left him with a stressed, forlorn attitude. Sadly, Bruno is probably the first casualty of Alma's unresolved grief and fear.

Which. Um. Sure is some information!!! What, and I cannot stress this enough, the FUCK, Alma??? Like I can totally see and have read - and written! - fic where this happens but holy Christ on a crutch.

i haven't read the fanbooks, the short story collections, the manga (it has extras, i think?), nor the sequel (hannelore's house of lords, right?) yet. i'd like to think that's going to last me for a while, but the brainworms are too strong and i just KNOW i'm going to finish them all in under two weeks, tops. do you have any aob fic recs? or any other book/light novel/web novel/manga recommendations? PLEAS EI'M NOT READY TO LET GO OF AOB FJEAKFN

I've only read the ones that have been translated and for the most part they are just different POV on what we already know happened in the series, I like them, but not much more story wise. . . I think Hannelore's is set after the series though, I looked at a few on the site and they seem to be after Rozemyne has 'graduated' from school, but I didn't want to read them yet so not completely sure they all are... maybe you can clarify after you read them.

I did try to look into AOB fanfiction, but A LOT of them are spoilerly so often I couldn't follow (as I haven't read all the way to the end) or didn't want to be too spoiled. I'm looking though my AO3 history and I only looked at a few before I  decided to just wait, so maybe you or other can add their favorites.

There was one I remember reading and liking was Schlaftraum's Blessing

I admit this is what lead me to finally seeking out the Japanese website and spot reading a few of the chapters. Most fanfiction likes to focus on romance or a romantic moment over telling a story, but this one integrated nicely with the series and had a nice thru arc between all the parts and was written well. I see that the author TheChatteringMagpi has since started a few more AOB stories and they all look interesting, one is AU and the other about Adolphine, so maybe even I can read them without needing to have read everything yet. So if I had to recommend one this is the best I got as I haven't really done a deep dive on AOB fanfiction / Japanese doujinshi.

hands down my favorite fic in the fandom right now. it’s the one that converted me into a Bakugou lover. if you have any fondness for Bakugou as a character then it’s likely you’ve read this one already, but if not, I can’t recommend it enough. incredibly depressing, but with the hope that comfort is coming soon in the next few chapters.

guys.. the medical accuracy of this fic is just... *chef’s kiss*

I rarely see mental health genuinely handled well in fics, but this one goes above and beyond. kudos to the author for doing such excellent research into psychology, and making the application of it in here not-boring. also, while this one does have abusive!Mitsuki, it’s done in a way that feels realistic, and how I usually will see it occur in real life, rather than just for the hurt/comfort feels.

fair warning, the fic can be incredibly triggering (themes of severe depression, PTSD, panic attacks, rape survival, abuse survival, suicidal ideation/attempted suicide, among other things), so be safe and heed the tw’s if you decide to read. legitimately one of my Top Favorite fics in this fandom.

Anyone in the underbelly of society would recognize him, after the publicity of both UA’s Sports Festival and the events leading up to All Might’s fall. The uniform he was wearing cast away any doubts about the young man’s identity.

It was a bit of a surprise that the little firecracker presented as an omega.

Or: there are certain types of evil that seemed too distant, archaic violations and perversions that would never actually threaten bright-eyed heroes-in-training in the clean, modern world...but sometimes those evils aren't as distant as one might think.

remember when I said that I love a/b/o fics that are full of plot and world-building and gender-induced tension? that’s this one. the OC’s are fabulous and you love to hate ‘em. also, it’s the fic that made me fall head-over-heels for the TodoBaku dynamic, so it’s got a special place in my cold, dead heart. 

be warned, there are rather explicit non-con scenes between an adult (OC) and a minor (Bakugou) in this one, but the author warns for them in advance, and you could likely skip those parts without missing too much if you need to.

Never and Always, Eventually by Wawa_Boonliang

Lessons Learned by Sif (Rosae)

Rather than the police station, Katsuki's friends bring him to a hospital after rescuing him from the villains. His wounds were minor, but it didn't make having them treated any less important. As it would so happen, Best Jeanist was also brought to this hospital after the attack.

Sometimes, small choices have a big impact on how a story plays out.

classic Bakugou hurt/comfort. this fic opened me up to the potential that could be a genuinely good Best Jeanist & Katsuki mentor-mentee relationship, and I kind of dig it and search ravenously for it in other fics now. I’m also a huge fan of the behind-the-scences Pro Hero Chat group.

paaaaaaiiiiiiiin. the hurt is ALIVE in this one. lots of tortured, angsty exploding child goodness. the OC’s are excellently crafted, and the Bakugou & Eri relationship? beautiful. definitely deserves a read.

Ground Zero by WindsChild8178

In the wake of Kamino, Katsuki is tested more than anyone could imagine. Bound by a villain’s quirk to keep his silence or die, he lives each day knowing it might very well be his last. He continues to work towards becoming a hero, keeping his secret from his classmates and teachers, focusing on making it through each day and trying not to allow the panic or depression to get the best of him. When the villain finally corners him with demands in exchange for his life, there is really only one answer Katsuki Bakugou can give.

honestly don't know which I want updated more - social media 101 or ground zero. this author's fics are amazing, and I really wasn't expecting the twist in this one. can't wait for windschild to come back to this fic some day.

He stares after the carriage, something like longing on his face. “I’m going to be a Witch one day.” James hisses, hunching down in his arms. “I will!” Steve gives the cat an indignant glare. “I’m not going to spend my life as a street sweeper, I’m going to make a difference, just you wait and see.”

Steve didn't believe a word out of Bucky's mouth when he said that Steve was the most powerful witch he'd ever seen, but at least Bucky had until they reached Bonding age to convince him of the truth.

When Bucky was seven the Training Masters told him he had no magic, no potential, that he'd never be a witch. It wasn't a surprise. Witches came from certain families and a certain class, just like magic was sterile and ordered and familiars were obedient and servile. That was simply the way the world worked.

Bucky grew up and got on with living his mundane life, knowing he was one hundred percent magic free. Which meant it came as something of a shock when the familiar appeared in his living room, claiming Bucky was his witch. It meant the Masters had been wrong. It meant Bucky had magic.

It meant, just maybe, that wasn't the way the world had to work after all.

Bucky looks as though his soul is about to leave his body in sheer annoyance. "I just—I really thought I was going to have a single this year."

"Yeah?" Steve keeps himself from snapping, but only just. "I thought I was going to have a room this year." * In which Steve and Bucky are forced to room together their senior year at boarding school, and accidentally soul bond to each other even though they kind of hate each other. All they have to do to get out of it is not kiss each other for a year so the accidental bond will fade. How hard could it be?

(note that neither of them are familiars in this but magic exists and they are soulmates-- though they can choose to break it off if they want ;) )

(they are also not familiars in this but it’s a Loveless AU. It’s a universe where couples who share a destined name given to them by processes beyond their control (so sort of like soulmates) fight in spell battles. One is the ‘fighter’ who attacks, and the other is the ‘sacrifice’ who receives all the damage. Also people who have never engaged in sexual intercourse have cat ears and tails.)

Helllllo you seem like someone who reads a lot of fanfictions so i wanted to ask if you can recommend some cake fanfictions? Rather longer ones than oneshots that you currently like? That’d be awesome 🤲🏻 no worries if not!

ok i typed up an extremely detailed answer to this ask only to accidentally delete it but! hopefully i can remember everything i said (if not i shall commit major crimes) anyways if i’m missing something it’s definitely because of that and not bc i spaced it,,,, okay take 2 answering this ask

hi anon!!! i am so incredibly honored that you appreciate my taste in fic enough to ask me for recs i am all !!! i do need to issue 2 disclaimers b4 i begin: 1) i only started reading 5sos fic this fall so there are def other people who have better knowledge than me and 2) i don’t read explicit fics which limits the amount of fic i read/the ones i can rec. however! i am pretty sure i’m one of the only people who searches for 5sos fic by wordcount instead of pairing so if you’re looking for long(er)fic you’ve come to the right place :)) cake is a rather popular fic at the moment so there’s tons of good fic out there beyond what i’m going to rec here! i’m just going to list a few of my favs and if anyone knows of any good fics i left off feel free to add them! (i’m only going to be recc’ing completed fic as a matter of principle but if other people want to go crazy!) also, since i don’t know what you consider “longer fic” i’m going to put the word counts by each fic so you know what you’re getting into lol (i did make sure none of these recs are under 10k tho) okay with all that being said i guess i’ll dive right in!

if you’re a fan of cake fic you almost definitely know of the incredibly talented unofficial queen of cake @kaleidoscopeminds but just in case you should 100% check out her ao3! she has several longer fics, but my personal favorites are flatmate au (20k), journalist calum/musician luke au (16.8k), and her roadtrip fic (36.6k). they’re all incredibly written and clever and funny (with just the right amount of angst) so if you haven’t checked them out i highly recommend it! 

if when you said longfic you *really* meant longfic, then you have to check out vegas au (88.4k) by @emmybazy from all the way back in 2014! it has some absolutely stunning worldbuilding and has a very unique way of framing the plot that i’ve never seen in fic before which made it a very refreshing read for me! if you’re looking to get lost in a fic this is the one for you 😊

moving along to another member of cake royalty, @staticsounds is a brilliant fic writer with loads of cake fics! (you should definitely check out her ao3 if you’re a cake person) my personal favorites of her longer cake fics are her la au (40.4k) and the cake version of bake off au (17.9k)! they’re both total showstoppers (get it? bc bake off? yes i do think i’m hilarious thank u) while also having very different moods? if that makes sense? like they both fit different vibes i look for at different times which is wonderful!!

and of course i can’t talk about molly and not bring up one of my favorite fic projects of all time, which was her collab with the spectacular @cringeycal for their college dance au (15k) & college pet au (14.7k) (that is a horrible way to describe it and i apologize but it’s also 6 am and i haven’t slept yet so cut me some slack) these are both genius and hilarious and i could go on about them for actual hours so if you haven’t read them yet go crazy go stupid and if you don’t love them i’ll eat scorpions on live television :))

how could i talk about cake fics without bringing up beloved hanukkah fic (13.6k) by the light of my life @clumsyclifford?? this fic is not only just a lovely piece of prose all around it just has so much love and warmth and fluff it’s practically overflowing and i personally think it should be required reading bc it’s so !!! bella hasn’t written any other cake over 10k but i have yet to read a fic of hers i haven’t loved so if you’re looking for some shorter cake (or longer of another pairing) you should def check out her ao3 😊

if you’re looking for some angsty fic, i highly recommend @lifewasradical ‘s fic where calum leaves the band (10.1k) it is absolutely heartwrenching in the best way!! she also has an adorable bakery au (11k) that is extremely fluffy and cute!! 

there’s also her collab with @pixiegrl for their wrong number au (16.1k) if you’re looking for some disaster college kids making a mess of falling in love! 

ok this post is getting very long and the sun has just risen (insert yikes emoji) so i’ll wrap it off with @michaelsarmbandtattoo ‘s trans luke au (12.8k) which balances fluff and angst extremely well imo and is a great read! 

ok it is now past 6:30 am and i have an appointment at 10 and have yet to sleep so! that’s all for now! i am almost certainly forgetting some excellent fic but my brain is fried from last week of the semester vibes so someone else can fill in the blanks. this is probably way more rambly than you were looking for but it wouldn’t be a megs’ production if it wasn’t :)) thanks for asking for recs i’d love to do this again sometime for another pairing! (not this week tho lol) 💙
