watching the whole al-ahli hospital explosion story unravel really put highlights on stuff that isn't new by any means, but does go unrecognized most of the time, especially before the war broke.

the overwhelming majority of people who are watching this from outside israel and palestine evidently while munching on popcorn do not give a shit about people. they care about narratives. they like pretending that they're all about moral high grounds but they are absolutely lying. sometimes lying to themselves.

how did the hospital story especially show that? well, the explosion happened, for starters. it was nighttime and the only visuals we got from the ground are some videos. it'll take a while until those videos get properly analyzed (i'll get back to that later). meanwhile the known facts were that 1. the explosion happened 2. it was at a hospital. almost immediately, hamas claims that it was bombed by idf. almost immediately, hamas claims that anywhere between 500-900 people were killed. they don't provide any evidence to either claims. those claims get reported as facts by many major international news outlets (bbc, cnn, al jazeera, et cetra). it even gets reported by israeli media. why? because it's nighttime and no actual evidence comes out of the scene of the explosion and nobody's got any idea what the hell is going on. i imagine all of you have seen what followed that. harsh condemnations of israel from many world leaders and organizations. calls for action, protests, violence. jordan and palestine have cancelled their planned meeting with biden just hours before it was supposed to happen. so many people/organizations have announced that they will rally against the death of innocent people at the hospital, by israel's hands.

then some time passes. people watch the little videos of the event. they start asking questions. idf releases their own version of the event and claim that they aren't behind the explosion but i won't go deep into that because i'm sure most of you don't care. but then biden says that it seems idf wasn't behind it. the pentagon reached the conclusion judging info collected by american intelligence, not israel's. slowly, more intelligence services and professionals - both official and open source/private - also start echoing the same conclusion - that the explosion seems to have been due to a failed rocket launch by the palestinian islamic jihad organization, that fell apart shortly after said launch, and exploded when falling down to the ground below (that is, the hospital).

then came daylight. and with daylight, came videos and photos. and the hospital was still there. no massive crater in the ground instead of a building (which is what the result of idf bombings looks like). there was a crater... about 1 meter in diameter, in the hospital's parking lot. surrounded by several cars that were burnt to a crisp. how did 500-900 people (or 471, per hamas' later claim) die from a few burnt cars and a 1-meter wide crater in a parking lot?

the thing is - people DID die. i've seen one estimate of 10-50 people dead, and another "on the low end of 100-300 people".

but you know what? suddenly there were no protests. after several countries and media outlets have admitted that it seems likely that the explosion was pij's fault, suddenly the deaths of dozens of innocent palestinians in a single blast wasn't a tragedy anymore. definitely not one worth protesting about, worth talking about, worth demanding justice for.

and that's exactly it - that's the perfect, classic, most crystal clear example of it - people do not care about the suffering and death of actual human beings in this war. in the entire israeli-palestinian conflict. they care about the narrative that they want to maintain. and when they encounter evidence that goes against that narrative - be it israeli settler & idf violence and bibi's longtime support of hamas; be it the october 7th massacres and the thousands of rockets fired at israeli cities from the gaza strip over the last 15+ years - people will ignore those atrocities, that real people have suffered from and died from, in favor of pushing forward the version of absolute righteousness that THEY favor. the clear story of right and wrong, black and white fairytale morality that they WANT to believe is true."[israel/palestine] is evil! the real victim all along is [israel/palestine]!" circle as fits because the same arguments echo everywhere, in different flavors. the horseshow theory proving itself in real time. the individual stories of people will be cherry picked from time to time, sure - but only to further a narrative; only if they match the said narrative. anything else is fake or irrelevant.

it's also why the last 2 weeks have seen an absolute tsunami of whataboutism and strawman arguments. gotta protect The Narrative.

another absolutely absurd thing to behold was how quickly, willingly, eagerly people fall for blatant propaganda. this war is about propaganda and world opinion literally more than it's about physical fighting in real life. and it's funny because... how many times did you see people discuss the way media and news outlets report events and stories? the psychology behind it? the way they tell things and use words in a very specific way so you'll end up thinking a certain way/reaching a certain conclusion? how many goddamn times have people talked about how untrustworthy social media content is? how influencers tailor their content, edit their videos in very specific ways? how much bots and algorithms are involved? literally how social media platforms openly and blatantly tailor their algorithms to push the popularity of certain content, and hide other content? all the times it's been discussed and condemned, you'd think people would be constantly aware of it, right? the concept of fake news is hardly new.

then came this war and an utter tsunami of Very Specific Messaging hits social media, constantly. and... it works. people swallow it line, hook and sinker. they echo it. they spread it around. they watch 10 tiktoks and read a handful of tweets and suddenly they've got a deep understanding of a decades long ethnic conflict. it's fucking embarrassing how this needs to be unironically said but you are not immune to propaganda.

one last thing is that i'm seeing stuff like "this is israel's 9/11" and "this is colonization" thrown around a lot and just fucking stop. these terms, these messages are sent out SPECIFICALLY for western audiences because too many idiots struggle to have empathy for a tragedy without being able to compare it to something they've already formed an opinion or emotional experience around. in reality neither of those things are truly applicable to the israeli-palestinian conflict or to the current war, and claiming that they are is embarrassingly americentric/eurocentric. y'all have got to get your heads out of your western asses and realize that not everything in the world is a directly related to or is a result of your countries' histories.

the israeli-palestinian conflict is incredibly long and insanely complicated and the least you could do is sit your ass and get properly educated on it instead of consuming some tailor-made propaganda on social media and feeling like you understand shit.

or at least you'd have done that if you actually cared about the REAL FUCKING PEOPLE - not photos or numbers or videos or viral content, PEOPLE - who are living through this conflict and war and suffering from it their whole lives. but we've already established that you don't really care about the people. you really only care about the precious Narrative. maybe it's time you owned it.

Nina:

Nina the Killer would listen to SXTN. She'd blast 'Von Party zu Party' in her pink, leopard print, maximalist room every day. She knows all of their songs by heart and introduces everyone who doesn't know them (very few) to SXTN.

Had a fat crush on the Kaulitz brothers (Tokio Hotel), Peter Shaw (Die ???), Julien Bam and Taddl (TJ_beastboy) when she was younger.

Watched Rebekah Wing's horror yt vids religiously. Tbh, she watched every German youtuber's horror vlogs.

Was a victim of the "Scheiss Grufti" and "Zieh dich mal vernünftig an" comments in her school.

Since she's Turkish in my AU, she had an accent when she spoke German, especially when she was younger. It's still there but not as noticeable.

Early and uncontrolled internet access kid.

CRO hater in public, secretly loved his songs.

Didn't go outside often when she was younger, she rather played at home or in her backyard.

Was that kid that went to primary school with a princess crown.

Wanted to go to the Longboard tour SO badly but wasn't allowed to.

Toby:

Probably grew up in a small village on the countryside.

Was an outside kid, he hated being at home. Not only because of the abuse but also because he got bored too quickly.

LOVED Die Ärzte and Pisse, his dad listened to Rammstein so he didn't listen to them as some form of protest. (I don't support the actions of Till Lindemann in any way btw)

Went everywhere with his bicycle until 13, then he just walked everywhere or took public transport.

Says 'Digga' in every sentence, doesn't even know how he picked it up but he did. (Digga is a German slang word, comparable to bro, dude etc...)

Toggo kid who actively hated on KiKa kids. Mainly because he once fell asleep while watching KiKa in the evening and woke up while Berndt das Brot was on. He got jumpscared basically. (Please google Berndt das Brot, that thing was every German kid's nightmare and biggest fear istg.)

Always got candy too when he went to the bakery. Loved Esspapier and Schlümpfe.

Absolutely despises AfD voters. (Which is good, don't vote right wing parties kids, be like Toby)

When the first Bibi und Tina movie came out, his sister forced him to go to the cinema with him.

Regularly falls into a bush of nettles. (Not that he cares or feels it)

Ate every god damn berry he found in the wild when he was a kid. An absolute miracle that he's still alive.

Has always been a Marvel boy.

Met Nat in primary school. They even lived close to one another. Thought Nat was weird at first but somehow ended up crushing really hard on her in 8th grade or something. Is still crushing.

Natalie:

Was a victim of the "Oui, oui baguette" comments at her school.

Was the weird girl at her school, no one really talked to her, was always drawing something and only wore black.

Absolutely loved Stutenkerle and St. Martins Brezeln.

Always had the prettiest lantern at St. Martin.

LOVED Bibi und Tina. Had everything from them, dvds, cds, posters, friendship bracelets, everything.

Had a big fat crush on Toby in 7th grade. (Nothing really changed about that lol)

Lived on a farm, had her own little pony and named her Sabrina as a reference to Bibi und Tina.

Lived in a small village on the countryside. (Same that Toby lived in obviously)

Ruhrpott dialect despite her French roots. I'm not gonna explain why, she just has it.

Had a crush on Beni from Woozlegoozle when she was a kid.

Even though her parents are french, they loved Schlager music. Nat has a love-hate relationship with it.

Was at EVERY Schützenfest in her village and those around it. Had no particular reason for it, she always went alone anyways. She just found it amusing to see people get drunk and do stupid shit.

I made so much headway on writing today that, as I got in bed, my brain started playing a particular song (Bibi the Dog). Huh, I thought, I haven't thought of that song in a long time, I wonder – oh, a surprisingly legible answer! My dormmate was blasting it from his stereo in 2016, during the nine days when I wrote the second of the two novellas I ever completed. Schoolwork pretty much screeched to a halt. Nine days of ceasing to be a person so I let this thing pour effortlessly out of me like a miracle well in desert.

I was in the middle of writing when I heard the song, dashed out to ask him what it was, and added it to my Spotify liked list.

Apparently I associate it with outlier-productive writing so strongly that my brain will start playing it at the end of a good day.

been busy with a hanta sero x reader fic (yeah i took the matter into my own hands lol all the wips i have will be the death of me) but happy new year guys! (^-^) here's a little treat to commemorate the event!

villain doesn't celebrate new years.

they're not certain if it's the noise it brings, or the blinding lights of the explosions being set, that they'd rather stay inside than wreak havoc in the city. it's ironic. they relish at the sight of a building being engulfed in hungry flames and hum along with terrified screams and sirens, but grimace at speakers blasting loud, upbeat music and fireworks stroking bright colors at the night sky.

maybe it's part of their bad guy persona. honestly, they don't care. what they care about is tonight is new year's eve, and they have no choice but to go out.

"Bibi!" called villain as they march across the busy street. it was a grave mistake, forgetting to close the door after receiving their pet's favorite food they ordered online. they should have been more careful, more attentive. now look where their carelessness led them. in the city. suffocating amidst the waves of crowds. hungry and nervous and impatient.

villain could've just use one of their multitude of inventions to track the little pomeranian. of course, why hadn't they thought of that?—another mistake.

why did they make the effort to track Bibi themselves? to restore their dignity? their ego? what exactly would they gain from doing this? they would find Bibi for sure, but what else?

"Momma, when are we going to see fireworks?"

villain had just realized they stopped on their tracks, too immersed in their own thoughts to take another step forward. their gaze darted at a kid with his mother standing by the pedestrian lane, waiting for the go signal so they can walk to the other side.

"Soon, sweetie, but I'm afraid you'll sleep through it like what you did last year." his mom chuckled.

"I won't! promise!"

huh, that's strange.

little by little, all villain sees molded into a hazy blur, as if time slowed and sped up at the same time. different conversations from different people crawled into villain's ears.

"I'm starving! I can't wait to go home and eat dad's cooking."

"I already bought the shoes that you wanted, is there anything else?"

"Let's go karaoke!"

"Do you want some coffee to keep you up 'til midnight?"

"Take care, love you!"

huh, truly strange.

all of a sudden, a hand patted villain's back. the uncomfortable feeling pooling in their stomach wanes when they heard a familiar voice: "I almost mistook you for a distorted pole in the middle of the sidewalk, villain."

"hero," villain murmured, turning to the side to get a better look of them. even in their civilian clothes, hero's as dashing as ever. and to villain's surprise, in their arm rests a cheery Bibi. "you found her."

villain carefully takes their pet in their arms. a surge of relief flowing through their veins.

"i can't wrap my mind on how tiny she is and managed to devour a whole fucking trash can. how did you even get her to do that?"

"You ate a trash can?" villain, flabbergasted, held the clueless pomeranian up in the air like a baby, missing hero's question. "Bad Bibi!"

it was too late when villain realized what they'd done. as they met hero's stare, hero's already stifling a grin. "never knew there'd come a day I'll see you act like that,"

"act like what?" this is villain's last resort to save what's left of their pride.

"cute," hero muttered, enough for villain to catch on.

what are you supposed to say after that? villain asked themselves as they quickly let their feet take them elsewhere, cheeks burning in embarrassment. should they set hero's agency on fire to get back at them? that would be fair right?

Bibi barked, as if she's aware of villain's plan and doesn't approve of it. can she read minds now? resurrection serum has no such side effects.

villain sighed. new year's eve really has some serious impact on everyone. however, it's not like hero never pulled off something like that before...

"where are you going?" hero reappeared on villain's side, matching their footsteps so they could continue their conversation. "were you going to buy something for the new year? let me help you."

"no. go away," villain kept their eyes straight ahead. they don't know where they're going. their lair is in the opposite direction.

"Bibi seems like she doesn't want me to leave, though." —and hero's right. Bibi's wagging her tail at them. traitor.

"aren't you busy?" villain huffs.

hero thought for a while. one, two, three seconds, then smirked. "yeah, so?"

"then why are you still here?"

"I'm waiting for you to notice we're walking towards my place,"

oh, shit.

"Don't turn back now," hero laughs and wrapped their hand around villain's waist to keep them from backtracking.

how did it come to this? villain can feel their face heating up again. Bibi barked once more, a happy bark. she toss and turn until villain had no choice but to let hero have her. no eye contact was made, but villain did steal a hasty glance at them.

this near, seeing hero cradling Bibi—the only treasure villain has—it's nice... comforting, even. their chest became ten times lighter, mind clear and at peace.

hero peered up at villain, their lips forming a genuine smile. "Let's make this new year a special one, shall we?"

a stray firework erupted, but the colors didn't irritate villain like it used to. in fact, it looked pretty. the noise, no matter how loud and incomprehensible it is, wasn't a bother anymore.

villain doesn't celebrate new years.

but with hero, maybe they will.
