We got a short mission chapter today that takes place prior to the gala!

For some reason, the English version has Anya calling Damian by his actual name in this panel, something I don't think she's done before. But in the original Japanese version, she's still calling him "Sy-on Boy." Both of them calling the other by their actual name seems like a big step in their relationship, so it's weird that the English version did this...maybe it was just an unintentional mistake.

Who was Martha's boyfriend indeed? I don't know but maybe his initials are H.H.

I love that Anya wanted to pick a dress that resembles Yor's ❤️ Also her taking all the "killing" expressions literally was hilarious, such an Anya thing to do!

After the previous chapter, there was so much fan art of Anya practicing dancing with Loid...and it actually ended up being canon!

Nice to see Yor and Bond again, it's been a while...poor Bond though! First he gets stepped on, then wet. At least that wasn't a scalding hot drink!

I like that Loid offered to clean up the spill for Yor. Also that he brings up Plan C again - still waiting for that to become a plot point again!

the way you write the relationships the batfam have with each other is so delicious to me like AUGHH YOUR BRAIN!!! it’s so good. if you were willing, i'd love to hear more of your thoughts on the relationship cass and jason have / steph and jason (staring at you with my big wet eyes)

i havent read much from any of the characters and have seen large parts of fandom say that they would all get along/they’d be so close/besties, so the ideas i’ve read in your works (wolf king and persephone) are very interesting!!

to put it bluntly — i think they’d fucking hate him.

part of that is, weirdly, people tend to devalue tim’s relationships with steph and cass. like, steph and tim have never been normal about each other. cass and tim spent most of the nineties and early aughts jumping back and forth to each other’s comics. in what world would either of them be chill with the guy who hurt him (and damian) like that?

it also flattens cass’s ideology and steph’s history with bruce’s mission. cass has struggled with engaging with murderers because she’s sees them as herself, and their actions as her own actions. she is reflected in each of them, but she ultimately values life above all else which is why her personal connection to the bat is so interesting. she would not have sympathy or time for jason todd, someone who uses bruce’s mission to hurt others, to take lives, and attack the people she loves. like…. please be serious. she would not be hanging out w the person who was happy when bludhaven got nuked.

same deal with steph— something that really annoys me is when people act as though the “bad robin club” would be a bonding moment between steph and jason. not just because steph has a more developed comic run than jason has, with legitimate obstacles to her getting recognised as a hero, but also because again, this guy is doing the same shit as her dad. why would she like him after he went after tim multiple times? whenever someone draws this comparison i think of this page —

the fact that steph values bruce’s mission, his views on taking a life, despite being at such a profound low point is really important. i can’t believe she’d look at jason and think him admirable.

however!!!! that doesn’t mean their interactions (when reasonably in character imo) can’t be interesting!! having cass and jason interact in persephone was a lot of fun, because making him interact with someone other than bruce or dick puts him off balance. peoples fear of complex relationships with legitimate stakes makes me sad. neither cass or steph have that history with him before death, or that same image of him as a memorial, and it’s a fun thing to explore. specifically this passage from wolf-king —

• Damian’s a pretty rough and brash kid, so when the two of you first meet he’s going to be quite intimidating and even rude no matter how nice you are to him. Seeing how much of a superiority complex he has during his younger years really makes you realise how much he matures when interacting with people as he gets older.

• Due to his experiences and training before he comes to live with Bruce, he’s clearly got a huge amount of training already mastered or at least highly developed compared to basically anyone else his age, including you. This is something he uses to put you down at first, before he actually realises how much he enjoys your company and uses his experience to help you later on.

• Training is something Damian spends a lot of time doing outside of actually handling villains and criminals, so this is a perfect way to spend a significant amount of time with him, while you also develop your skills, without putting either of you out of your comfort zones. It’s a great way to bond with him and spend time, making him more inclined to spend regular and relaxed time with you as well.

• Once he stars getting older he still isn’t much of a people person, but he has learned how to accept the company of others in a more civilised manner and learned how to actually work well with others help when he’s comfortable with them. Because of this, you are actually one of the few people he’ll consistently keep around and work with when patrolling around Gotham without complaints.

• As you’re one of the few people that Damian is friends with, especially since such a young age, the rest of the family tend to know you quite well. This starts from their initial interest in Damian actually acting pleasant towards someone, to actively enjoying you being around due to Damian’s temper and mood being restrained when you’re around.

• Even though Damian knows you can handle yourself and has seen your skills first hand, he still ends up being extremely protective and defensive of you no matter the situation or how minimal the danger. He’s also a lot more gentle himself than he is around other people just because he cares for you so much more, letting you be one of the few people who has seen his softer side every so often.

• Since you are one of the people that has seen the vulnerable side to Damian, he feels quite a deep connection to you. Because of this it’s easy for him to eventually develop feelings for you as he gets older and allows himself to express and explore that side of himself naturally. He may be awkward and distant about it at first, but once he’s accepting of it he’s a naturally great partner. Especially since you both already know everything about each other.

Damian Wayne (9-14):

Damian is a kid who was raised as an assassin and because of that when he first appears he has some really messed up ideas of how to prove himself to his father by being aggressive with the criminals they capture and attacking his brother. Because of this people act like he is the most evil character ever and refuse to give him any grace. They make him out to be this awful irredeemable monster who just wants to kill his brother and hurt people. If the fandom isn’t making his out to be The Worst(tm) then they are ignoring his existence all-together. He is a really interesting character who has done some not so great things but he’s grown and learned a lot through various character arcs (as much of an arc as a comic book character can have) and he deserves to be acknowledged for himself and not just as a villain so that people can woobify his brother.

Most of the Tumblr fandom likes this guy but if you step outside this website then wham so many people say he got what he deserved as a kid and Batman can't be cool if he's a dad so it's important for Batman to trash-talk his dead child constantly so we can all agree what a bad idea it was. Also wanna highlight that a lot of the records we have from fans at the time were clear they disliked Robin for BEING a child. Like a lot of the little dude characters in this tournament are treated too harshly for making an ugly choice and the fans aren't being understanding or sympathetic that the choice is made by a child character who is immature and not developed and strong enough to make a good choice and stuff. But THIS little dude was specifically hated FOR being a child. People wanted tough loner guy Batman not Batdad and his little buddy. The first Robin would drive back from college and guest star sometimes and be advertised as the Teen Wonder and people were like yeah okay but then Batman actually starts being a single parent for a child with needs and people were like UGH not the BOY Wonder. Today pretty much everywhere you see Batman fans saying Batman is better solo, no kid, it's not realistic to have a kid, a kid shouldn't be in the movies blah. Even if the comics they always find a way to send away the new kid so that Batman never has to parent. So all the Robins are being excluded from the narrative but I think this one is THE symbol of Batman fans hating a child character just for being a child.

Robin, Jason Todd, THE hated child character. In the 1980s, Batman comics had become increasingly dark and gritty. According to editor O'Neil himself, the courted audience wasn't kids but 19-40 year old men with disposable income. Batman's child sidekick, Robin, was offensively campy and childish. Fans called him wimpy, annoying, dumb, bratty, etc. Also people complained that Batman acting like an affectionate dad was unmanly and gay. Robin acts violent and emotional and people are like "ew he's so childish and emotional"—and then Batman literally acts just as murderously and emotionally within literally the same exact story and people are like "wow he's so dark and tortured". So in 1988 (after brutalizing Batgirl to get rid of her for being too bright and nice and kid-friendly), DC held a paid poll for fans to vote for Robin to live or die. O'Neil claims he heard a fan (a grown man with a dayjob as a lawyer) programmed a phone to spam kill votes. One fanguy claimed that he sold his Mercedes to buy kill votes (probably an exaggeration but still). By less than 1% margin, the vote decided to kill Robin in a spectacularly violent way. Anyway the 1989 Batman movie brought in a huge wave of new child comicbook fans who liked the new Robin (a very cool teenage high school Robin with a driver's license and a girlfriend), and DC started a separate Robin-less Batman series called Legends of the Dark Knight to make the anti-Robin writers and fans happy. But to this day, many fans agree it was a good idea to kill off the other Robin so that his foolish death reminds other characters to never be childish and stupid again. Bonus: the current Robin (usually a traumatized 10-year-old) has also been facing some pretty loud hatred for over 15 years.

Did I just read your Super Sons primer from 2020 at 3 am on a Monday morning because I'm having a real normal one? Maybe?! I'm wondering how you feel about how they and their relationship has developed since then. IMO it's... Pretty bleak. 😩

I HAVE A LOT OF FEELINGS ABOUT IT. (Also here's the primer for anyone who missed it.)

So I will say that 95% of everything Jon has been in since he got aged up has been hot garbage, but I do think the exception is when Damian is around. But let's take it from the top!

First of all, I don't necessarily think they should de-age him again. Generally speaking I think it's better storytelling to focus on fixing things moving forward, rather than undoing things moving back. Sure, if DC came up with some big cosmic event that reset Jon to 11, I certainly wouldn't complain, but I'd rather see them, uh...do literally anything with Teen Jon that doesn't suck.

But yeah, aging Jon up to begin with still makes me livid because:

I want my baby to have had a childhood.

It's fully character assassination for Lois and Clark. They would NEVER let their 11-year-old go to outer space with a supervillain. Lois would NEVER just abandon him out there, and Clark would NEVER respond with "Well, I'm sure he's fine, wanna have marathon sex?" I honestly have no idea what Bendis or his editor were thinking.

They have not done a single interesting with him since!!!

Putting this behind a cut because it got LONG. Also spoilers for Beast World in there.

I've said this before, but I have to assume that Bendis wanted to age Jon up because he wanted to write a Legion book. But he also in his wisdom decided to bring Kon back into continuity at exactly the same time, which means we have two nearly identical Superboys that DC didn't and still doesn't know what to do with. Kon clearly couldn't have joined the LOSH because he already had a team, but you know what Super teen was available, and not 11, and who has a history with the Legion that goes back almost as long as Clark's? KARA. But I will save that rant for another day.

And honestly, Kara dodged a bullet, because that Legion book was unreadable. Bendis at his most Bendis-y wall of text interrupt-y conversations and no plot. If I give Tom Taylor any credit it's that the second he got his hands on Jon, he torpedoed Jon/Imra as a ship. GOOD.

And when the LOSH book finally went out with a whimper (that JLA/LOSH miniseries! what was that!!!), we entered the Taylor Era. Taylor's quirks are less stylistic and more narrative than Bendis's. You can spot Bendisian dialogue at twenty paces, but a Taylor comic tips its hand when it sets up a really interesting premise or a really high stakes threat and then immediately undercuts it with a little wet fart noise of nothing. To wit:

Jon's starting college! This will be an interesting challenge for him to readjust to normal life after six years in a torture-volcano and an indeterminate amount of time in the future, and also considering he never graduated from sixth grade. I wonder what will - oh no he dropped out after three pages. (He has done NOTHING in his civilian identity since, btw. I guess he's too busy hovering just behind Dick at all times to work on his GED or whatever.)

Jon is going to confront Ultraman! Finally the comics will have to engage with all the trauma he must have - oh no Ultraman's dead.

Jon is trapped in the Injustice Universe! This is a really dangerous universe that might make him question everything he knows about - oh he just lectured everyone and flounced off home.

Beast World is a perfect example. Taylor seems to think that having a hero effortlessly solve a problem makes them look badass, but it's actually the effort that makes them look badass. So like, we spent five months keeping the Kryptonians and other A-class heroes away from the spores because the spores are attracted to power and if a Super got spore'd everyone would be in big trouble...but then in the last issue, they just have Jon fly up to everyone with a spore in them, wait for the spore to jump at him, and catch it? That doesn't make the Titans look smart or Jon look tough. It makes all of them look like idiots because it it was that easy, why didn't they do that in the first place?

On top of that, Taylor doesn't ever really earn relationships. Jon and Jay is the obvious one. Jay has no personality. There's no chemistry between the two characters. Jon might as well be dating a cardboard cutout labeled "Proof of Queerness." (Or "Bernard." Ahem.) But we're supposed to be like, yes, give Tom Taylor a GLAAD award for using queer characters as props, when he's going to turn around and kiss Chuck Dixon's ass on social for being homophobic about Jon? UGH.

Honestly worse for me though is the Jon and Dick relationship. Because Taylor is writing both characters, we're supposed to believe that there's this close mentor-mentee bond there? I don't think they EVER interacted before the Taylor era. (And don't even look at me with that retconned-in scene of Dick finding lost baby Jon. You're telling me that Superman, with his X-ray and telescopic vision, needs to call Bruce and Dick for help finding his own son? Fuck off.)

Anyway it all combines to make basically every Jon appearance for the past three years profoundly unsatisfying. Even the stuff that isn't by Taylor never goes anywhere. Remember when he was jealous of the Super Twins for two panels? And then everyone forgot about it forever? SIGH.

HOWEVER.

However.

If there is one thing that Bendis and Taylor and every other writer got right, it's that Jon is crazy bonkers in love with Damian always and forever. Jon has been written like shit since 2019, but he has also not wavered in his devotion for even one single solitary second.

THE EVIDENCE:

This is the first thing Jon does when he gets back to Earth:

He then tells Damian he's contemplating not joining the Legion because he'll have to leave Damian behind. Damian tells him to go and then come get him if it's cool.

Turns out the Legion is cool. Jon comes and gets Damian. The Legion isn't happy about it and Jon threatens to leave if Damian can't stay, while gazing adoringly at Damian's unconscious body cradled in his arms:

Eventually LOSH is canceled and Jon comes home and starts following Damian around by listening for his heartbeat. LIKE PALS DO!

Then Damian gives him a pep talk!

Then there's this ABSOLUTE CUDDLE:

The way Damian nuzzles into Jon's shoulder! Can you even stand it!

And then there's this:

The climax of Son of Kal-El, btw, is one of the several times Jon is saved by Damian and confides in Damian and turns to Damian for comfort or advice...and Jay is just sort of standing there off to the side. I am fully aware I have ship goggles on but the degree of emotional investment Jon has in these relationships is not the same.

Then they had a special issue teamup:

Then we got Dark Crisis, and I actually love this interaction between them, because they are very different people with very different upbringings and this feels extremely in character to me for how they would both handle the loss of their fathers:

But even when they disagree, they still instantly support each other. Jon comes back with information? Damian makes a plan:

Also, we got the 2022 Pride issue where Jon, Jay, and Damian go to Pride together. I know that story is...contentious...but leave me here with Damian sulking while Jon and Jay kiss, okay?

Then we get Adventures of Superman, which is objectively awful, but Jon does spend his whole time in the Injustice universe thinking about Damian like the seagulls in Finding Nemo saying "Mine? Mine? Mine?"

This whole arc is truly hilarious. Jon finds out that Damian accidentally killed Dick and his response is to a) go find Batman and yell at him for not supporting Damian enough for accidentally killing Dick, and then b) go find Damian to be like "Wow, that must have been really hard for you (accidentally killing Dick)." There's being ride or die for your BFF, and then there's whatever the fuck Jon has going on.

(Meanwhile there's an incredibly uncomfortable scene with him and Injustice Jay where Jay "tests" him by trying to get Jon to cheat on regular Jay. So. That happens.)

And then just this past month we got Nightwing #110, where we learn that Jon is still listening to Damian's heart:

He completely freaks out watching Damian in danger, and immediately intervenes when it looks like Damian is about to kill someone because he knows what matters the most to Damian. Also, this happens:

YOU WIN THIS ONE, TAYLOR.

AND THEN THEY BICKER I LOVE IT WHEN THEY BICKER:

AND THEN DAMIAN LETS HIMSELF BE VULNERABLE BY ASKING JON IF HE HURT ANYONE WHILE HE WAS A KITTY, AND JON GIVES YET ANOTHER SPEECH ABOUT HOW DAMIAN HAS NEVER DONE ANYTHING WRONG EVER, IN HIS LIFE, AND DAMIAN STAGGERS OFF, LEANING ON JON.

This isn't even getting into the Trinity backup stories in Wonder Woman, which, like...Tom King is not valid but Jon and Damian are such an old married couple in them? It's truly incredible?

It took me like 45 minutes to parse Jon's line here as the general 'you" and not specifically Jon saying Damian wasn't straight. But like..."That's for straight people, which has nothing to do with us" is a hell of a thing to say, Jonathan.

I ALSO haven't even talked about DCeased because it's a different universe, but! Jon sitting with Damian while he dies??? MY HEART.

IN CONCLUSION:

Yes, they should never have aged up Jon.

Yes, most of his appearances since have been terrible and bland.

But OH BOY, do he and Damian remain in love.

I’m a simple gal I see GOT au and DC and I come RUNNING!!!! I’ve tried developing my own DC x GoT au and id love to hear more if you want to share!!!

I have a few ideas floating around my head for some of the batfam characters, nothing too concrete tho.

I imagine Bruce to be a lord of the north (mainly because I feel like the north fits gotham and the atmosphere the best. Something about all the dark clothing just fits the grim vibes) although I got a good comment talking about his no kill rule! So perhaps he could be like all edgy no kill because of his parents being dead. Alfred is an ex knight for the throne , also friends with his father that became his personal guard , and after Bruce s parents were murdered, chose to take care and raise Bruce in the North.

Dick's family was part of a travelling performers group travelling around Westeros. Bruce happened to pass by and notice one of their shows, I imagine his parents being killed or something just like Bruce's, then Bruce starts his orphan adopting hobby and takes Dick in.

Jason's father was part of a thief gang to try to provide a better life for his family. This works for a while until they get caught and imprisoned/ killed by whoever busts then/ something. Catherine Todd dies or an illness. Jason is left fending for his own, starts pickpocketing. Bruce finds him while he's trying to steal something packed on his horse and ends up adopting him. Still working on his death/ resurrection (I feel like they're a big part of his character and I want to add that)

Tim's parents were merchants. Possibly knew Bruce . Tim was a secret dick fanboy because of his traveling performer era (thought he was really cool and badass). Some more death and adoption.

I haven't fully thought about Damian s backstory yet and the relationship between Talia and Bruce, since I like the idea of them being from Essos , but that's what i have for him so far. Speaking high Valyrian and some other languages, accent while speaking in English ✨

I haven't come up with anything for Cass, Steph and duke yet

watched two lego batman movies and i liked the "lego batman movie"(2017) better than the "lego dc batman: family matters"(2019)

There is a vent in the last part (about pro ship:/+ wired shipping + block list) it's naturally negative so reading at your own risk.

So in the new Batman and Robin issue #7 Nika's sister making an appearance, got me thinking of other possibilities for sibling characters to come back.

Mostly I’m thinking about Respawn since he is Joshua Williamson's own character. And He made Respawn appeared in the last issue of Robin(2021), he also brought back Mara in that run too (just some appearance in the later issue).

And now Joshua Williamson is writing Batman and Robin, so naturally he can bring some characters back in this run. He had said in an interview that he might have figured out a way(try) to bring back Maya.

Throwback to 2022 of this old wip/art I made, is about what I think the emo teens of Lazarus squad dynamic would look like.

I imagine Nika and Respaw are irritated/tolerate with each other but would stay for Damian because Nika is Damian's girlfriend and they want to stick together. Meanwhile, Damian likes to include his half-brother in some fun activities (Respawn is acting reluctant bc of his own issues but he actually likes to have friends and feel include).

I haven’t finished this art bc I was going to add more wips (with other characters like Rose and Hawke) to make it a post. I didn't finish this art back then bc I was afraid Talia fans would be mad at me for drawing Respawn.

Trust me, I hate that Talia gets associated with Deathstroke like this, but I think Respawn is a confused/mistreated teen character and Damian (bless his heart and soul) still wants to be his brother regarding the whole mess. I will explain/talk more about my thoughts on Respawn as a character and his situations once I finish these drawings and get ready to post them.

Writing/typing words is harder than drawing for me personally. Drawing is like channeling my energy into a picture and forming an atmosphere and hopefully people will understand what thoughts and feelings I was trying to convey. Writing is using more brain powers to choose the correct and cohesive words, so people would not misunderstand what I'm talking about. Especially when English is not my first language, and even so I normally don't talk(write) much in my mother tongue either…(I'm not a quick thinker, it took me a longer time to think things through, writing literally exhausted me physically and mentally more than drawing.)

It doesn't mean I don't enjoy writing, it's just not my first choice to convey thoughts… but considering I can't draw everything I have in my mind and it takes even longer time to finish any art, I just need to write down things first from now on. Tumblr is the only place I can think of that has this longer text feature blog post and I'm more familiar with this platform format. So I will still be here posting my fan content.

I must say I will forever hate respawn x flatline as ship, cus I know who started this ship and their reasons behind it—Don’t let the new character develop naturally as the story goes, let’s put them in made-up weird situations first so I can prop up my own ship!😍 And get both of the new characters out of the way, since no one would defend them so I can fanon the hell out of them by making them look bad all around!🤞 (What if I stone you first hand🪨🪨💥)

And I will continue to dislike/against any shipping Damian's sibling to Nika. I simply don't like the unnecessary sibling conflict just for romance tropes! I think I read this right?? If I didn’t let me know. (Also I’m basing all of this on stuff that I have red and watched. I only read a handful of comics) lots of grammar issues, I wrong this on the bus ride home)

Physically—comics and animated, they don’t do him justice sometimes and I know he was originally created, I believe don’t take my word for it, to kill Bruce and replace him that’s why he looks so much like him and all. Pale skin blue/green eyes all that stuff. I don’t really see him like that because Damian’s was raised by the league of assassins and they literally trained him since he was born, so he probably spend most of his time outside in the sun( also climbing mountains and all) so like him being pale never really made since to me personally. And I know some people portray Damian having blue eyes like Bruce but I kinda like him better with green eyes, idk he looks so much like Bruce with blue eyes (even this that was the point) that it just seemed like Bruce used up all his DNA and made a human begin by himself with no help.

To me damian is also tall probably like 5’11 -6’1, and I’m not saying that just bc I can but because both his parents are tall asf ( and I’m only saying that bc I’m 5,2–been that way since 6th grade so everyone just seems tall to me) Talia is 5’8 and Bruce is 6’2 so he pretty much got his height genes from Bruce. (So additionally when I write fanfics I sometimes write from my POV when it comes to the readers height)

And he has muscle too, not like those body builders that look like they stuffed rocks inside their skin but it’s enough where people can see his muscles from the slightest of flex he does. Like c’mon he was raised by assassins, trained like one and then goes out and lives with Batman and then trains like Robin—there’s no way in hell he won’t have any.

And I’m also bringing his emotions in to Because some people will say to you that he’s not capable of caring or loving someone. Yes he does, 100% he does. Maybe not 10 year old because he was a little shit in the animated movies and what not, but he literally had a character development though out his life. In the comics and in the animated ones he has seen to have multiple loves interest. I’m biased my favorite is Him and Raven together because I feel they had more chemistry together then the others. Like cmon he even told Raven that the only reason he wanted her to join in leading the leagues of assassins was because he genuinely liked her and wanted her to be by his side ( and still does) Like he would die for his significant other in a heart beat!! Also he literally used the pit to bring back Dick because he was his brother and the thought of living without him hurt to much.

Rambling about Damian in Batman #138

just lots of speculating about writing choices lol

I had a lot of peeves in the writing for Damian this issue, and it mainly stems from Zdarsky's impression of Damian still being an entitled brat, which tbf is how a large chunk of comic readers still see him as :/

Objectively, he uses this to his advantage to go from Damian going on about his place as Bruce's REAL confidant/son

to being this kid that had placed all his loyalty in Bruce only to be abandoned :(

This writing of an entitled Damian is what makes him being vulnerable in the end hit SO much harder. Not to say even if he was written in character it wouldn’t hit the same, but to those who’s only familiar with him being the “arrogant Robin” it's an impactful character moment like, OH through all that brattiness he's really just a kid huh :(

IDK kudos to Zdarsky for making him look more sympathetic I guess?? BUT THIS KIND OF CHARACTER MOMENT FOR DAMIAN HAS ALREADY BEEN DONE IN RED ROBIN #14 WHERE IT MADE MORE SENSE AT THE TIME (to be EXTRA fair, that exact issue is how I got into Damian so if this is another similar gateway for comic readers in giving Damian a chance THEN OKAY...I CAN SEE IT…)

I'm trying really hard to figure out if this is just a case of a writer using a character as a personal mouthpiece because the comfort Tim offers Damian after is such a contrast LOL Zdarsky seems to know the major events of Damian "fighting" Bruce/giving up Robin and then the latest Batman VS Robin book, which I guess equals to "all they do is fight!!" BASICALLY this just feels like a funny observation on Zdarsky's part with his limited knowledge on Damian and Bruce's relationship :/ this may also be me trying not to hate Tim for this because reading him in comics is one of the only places I can refresh my love for himsdfgh

I’m not going into the brief Damian and Dick fight because that’ll just get me going on a rant about their mutual trust and respect that was nowhere to be seen BUT will end on how this last scene was nice haha what can I say, I’m weak to Damian getting emotional moments and especially comfort LOL

We finally get to see another side of Yuri this episode, outside of his Yor obsession (mostly). While I can't say this is one of my favorite chapters to be adapted, I definitely appreciate how it not only gives some needed character development to Yuri, but it creates good world-building for the series. As usual, Endo slips in social commentary without making it too preachy. And as usual, he shows how so much of what goes on in this world, as well as the characters' decisions and motives, are not black and white, good vs bad, but many shades of gray.

Nice to see Yor in that pretty burgundy color and Loid in a different sweater than his usual one!

I liked how they made the Bondman episode look like an old 70s anime - very nice touch!

Hopefully you stuck around after the end credits to see the anime versions of three omake chapters! They're all very cute, but one thing that must be addressed is...

Apparently someone on the anime team decided that too much skin is inappropriate for this very family friendly series 🤣Also interesting that they decided to animate all the omake chapters with that pastel look. Not sure why.

Since they're starting to adapt more of the omake chapters into the anime, and I know some of them break the 4th wall, I wonder if they'll ever animate those or just stick to the canon ones.

I like the two chapters that will be in next week's episode! Very excited for those 😁

Superpunk,his '2 Edgy 4 U' teen phase taken up thanks to Kon and Stephanie cracking his egg and his new choker being green is meant to represent he made one with a trinket that used to belong to Jason(them being best friends since they were 11 but then Ditf happened and the face paint is the closest it had to eyeliner tears style but fits too in a way because he also died and got ressurected,which is how he lost a few of his old fingers and has prosthetics now)

Ember,his solo hero name he took up after realizing he was actually pastel femme and was trying to overcompensate to validate being a trans man by acting masc(still a teen here as Superpunk only last a few months)

Ignite,his Outlaw name and he was Jason's right hand man,his black domino mask was a gift from him and Rhato gets an entire rewrite except for Artemis being a member because she was literally that shitshow franchise's only Saving Grace(the rest of the Outlaws are Eddie,Rose,Thad,Kyle,Duke and a good handful of ocs by me and @moonage-gaydream @insomniac-jay @honeypotsworld @theautisticcentre and @refrigeratedboombursts)

'New' Ember,him going back to his solo hero name but this time with Jason induced completed character development and hailed as equal to Clark instead of the extremely controversial reception he had before,helped by him saying he used to be Superman when Clark finally woke up to clear up any confusion(Jason and him settled down together in their own house in Metropolis and are still heroes with his pink domino mask being a gift too to symbolize him finally embracing all sides of himself but also have daytime jobs as a librarian and a bakery owner,his place being called 'Summer's Desserts' and they have their first kid in the run about it,her being a trans girl who keeps her birth name October)

Tim Drake writers and some fans have seemingly come to the conclusion that Tim is only Robin cause it's what he is stuck being and not because he genuinely cares. Tim pretended to go to college, went on a road trip with Steph and then was immediately wrapped up in Young Justice work. Tim wouldn't take new identities if being a vigilante wasn't important. Young Justice alone shows Tim's only concern wasn't Batman or he wouldn't have joined a team of supers and had a solo comic where he did so much stuff on his own. In a lot of ways Tim Drake defined what Robin was outside of Batman.

Being not Bruce Wayne's son for so much of his existence really defined him as a character. It took Dick Grayson growing up and going to college for DC to really start fleshing him out but that was the case for all the Titans. Childhood sidekicks developing a new comic arc of growing into adulthood. And Jason was killed to fuck with the symbol of Robin the later writers protested with Tim. It's no wonder he got his own book.

I also think that there's a lack of acknowledgment that Yes Tim thinks Batman and Robin are symbols of justice and heroism. But he wouldn't be Robin if he didn't believe in that symbol in the mission Robin is on. It's been over thirty years since Tim was thirteen and only had a civilian perspective on Batman and Robin. So while I can see why they're confused about where to go with Tim now that Damian is Robin (maybe it's just really hard to come up with a new code name. They really hit the jackpot with Nightwing. Jason just stole one of the Joker's identities). I just don't see why they're stuck pretending like Tim doesn't know his role as a hero. He does he's known it for just about exactly 20 years as he already did this song and dance when he was forced to quit Robin and came back to help for war games.

I think the oddest thing about my whole reading project is discovering as I go what I didn't know about storylines, about how many things are blown out of proportion and out of context, and about how, on average, stories are better and make more sense than people like to claim they are.

Because one of the interesting things when you read back catalogue is obviously that storylines are compressed. You see whole story arcs in just a day or two, rather than 6 months. You miss out on the speculation and elaboration as they are ongoing, but it also means you see situations resolve before you really have time to get worked up about them.

And that can have a really beneficial effect; you experience the story as it was plotted, rather than as it was first read. Weird gap moments are smoothed over rather than become niggling issues that you're waiting for pay off on. It gives proportion and perspective to events. And you can see structural goals a lot more clearly.

In any case, I am now up to 2017.

Recent thoughts on what I'm reading:-

Duke still does not have powers on page, and he's got a lot of character development; it's bizarre reading this when almost nothing going on here is known by the fandom, and the one thing the fandom DOES know is not yet canonical.

Steph and Harper have a better (and more interesting) relationship at this point on paper than Steph and Cass do.

Steph really does feel like Tynion picked up her character and tried to fix some of the issues that had her left on the shelf.

People hugely flatten how complex Kate Kane's background and canon as Batwoman is.

It's really interesting lining up Bruce's reaction to Tim's 'death' against Jason's and Damian's. Part of it is of course the contextual difference (in that Tynion knows Tim is alive and he'll be coming back) but Bruce feels a lot closer to the acceptance he reached after Jason, rather than the rage after Damian's. And there are definitely elements of how it is written that are specific reactions to the fandom's responses to Jason, Steph and Damian's deaths. It's interesting. Bruce doesn't appear quite ready to let go and get completely messy over this, and I wonder how much of it is a broader support network, and I wonder how much it is he doesn't trust himself if he gets messy without Tim there. (He's grieving! But on the scale of Bruce grieving so far it is incredibly tame and controlled and emotionally healthy)

I can't express how relieving it is to see situations recanonised and old dynamics put back into place unless you've worked through stories where they are just missing. A mid run that's reasonably on target is a fun thing to read, actually.
