My Dad Takes Rainy Days Off

My dad has an important job. This means he’s gone a lot and for a long time

but when the sky turns grey and the rain drops, I get to spend the whole day with him!

“Why don’t you work on rainy days?” I ask.

“The same reason your mom doesn’t work on Sunday” He laughs. “ I still go to work, but it gets so slow, I can leave early.”

We stay inside and play lots of games with Mama, like tag and hide and go seek.

While we play he tells me stories, like when he liked someone and they played tag or when my uncle hid his things but apologized by making him a gift.

He would also ask about me and my mama, though he says he always sees us when he drives for work.

Mama would also talk to him, and he talks to Mama.

Always “I love you” “You're my sunshine” and how much I look like my dad.

“Mama told me to ask you if I can have a sibling.” I said.

“ You have alot of siblings but they live far away…” He told me some live in a town where my grandpa’s brother is mayor, and that they didn’t like to leave.

“Your brother went there and left but there someone he loved who live there so he moved there.”

“When can I go?” I wanted to see my big brothers and sisters. But he told me I was too small.

Near the end he would sing us songs, play the guitar and dance with us too.

“Apollo,” Mama says, “The rains slowing down,”

That's when we go outside, the drips and drops get slower.

“I have to go kiddo” Dad would always say, always a little sad.

I would always say “Bye dad.”

He kisses my mom goodbye and gives me a big hug.

“I’ll be back next time, play games, and sing you songs.”

When I turn around he’s gone.

Then the sun shines brighter through the clouds than any other day.

I get really sad but then i remember that my dad takes rainy days off.

If your phone is taking over your life, who’s the real culprit? Exactly. Social media is not bad per se, the problem comes in when the content that you surround yourself with is toxic and unhealthy. Use your phone and social media for motivation, productivity, inspiration… Mindlessly scrolling is the real problem, not social media.

Don’t you have something better to do?

Being on our phones and constantly scrolling mindlessly through social media gives us dopamine and makes us addicted to it. But the thing is, phones aren’t the only thing that can give you dopamine. Explore and experiment life to see what can give you dopamine. For example, I love reading and when I’m doing it I never think of going on my phone because doing something that I love already gives me the dopamine that I seek.

Discipline is key.

This is kind of obvious since discipline is the solution to most of these issues but you actually need to learn how to have discipline. Change your mindset to one that understands that getting used to comfort will only bring weakness in the long run whilst getting out of your comfort zone will build strength. Start by choosing to do something that will be better for you in the long run even if it’s hard than settling for brief happiness just because it’s easier.

Start by not going on your phone first thing in the morning.

Going on your phone first thing in the morning will pretty much guarantee that you’ll be glued to it the rest of the day because the first dopamine hit that you get in the day is what you will continue to look for throughout the day. Get an alarm clock or just leave your phone in another room (e.g. your bathroom) throughout the night so when the alarm goes off in the morning you’ll be forced to get out of bed and not crawl back in it with your phone.

Change your phone from color to black and white.

Accesibility > display & text size. If the only colors you see on your phone are black and white it’s just not going to hit the same, you’re not going the get the same dopamine hit and you’re not going to want to mindlessly scroll because it’s not giving your brain that reward and that satisfaction that you would usually get, which is what unconsciously keeps us coming back.

Advice I'd Give to My Younger Self.

Be unapologetic about your presence. Never enter a room with your head lowered. Hold your head up like you are proud to be who you are. Take up space. Be bold in your actions. Let your voice be heard.

You don't have to be perfect. Get over perfectionism and the fear of being embarrassed. Learn to own all your flaws and insecurities and continue to do what you love.

What other people say mean nothing. Never loose sleep over anyone’s opinion of you. They are not God and they don't define you.

Believe in yourself. You can be successful just like those people you look up to. You have what it takes. Hone your skills and be great too.

Appreciate your unique gifts and qualities. Stop comparing yourself to others and changing yourself to fit in. Always stay true to yourself.

self-love and growth tip: write a personal mission statement!

outline who you are and who you want to be- not as some abstract idea of who you think you should be, but grounded in your current understanding of yourself and shaped by your intuitive awareness of your highest self. deep down, I believe we all know something of why we're on this planet- it may just take some digging to discover all the gems that lie within you, destined to be unearthed. write about what you know and love about yourself presently. write about what you intend to contribute to the world, the people around you. write about your values, your unique abilities. write about the principles that shape your life. you can include sections of what other people appreciate about you, what special traits you possess that bring life and light to those around you. this is an opportunity to connect with your essence and express it on paper. as you write, you will feel a holy connection with all of you. this is what you can return to to remember your mission and to realign yourself with it as often as possible. include lyrics, scripture, quotes- anything that you encounter that inspires a sacred awareness in you and ignites your desire to live truthfully and well.
