I come in search of thoughts on what makes a good angst, in your opinion - Percy

Hellooo! So to answer this I’m gonna be all over the place in terms of where we’re talking about making angst.

The Connection and History:

So one thing is for certain the connections the characters have with each other but also the reader's connection to the characters! That's what really makes it hit, and original pieces that harder to do than with fanfiction in most cases.

(great example why we read and write so much of it)

Original pieces need more layers to bring the readers to the level where you will affect them, while with fanfiction we already care, that's why we’re there. (and for the dopamine that floods us when reading)

Being able to convey that history without explaining it as an info dump is important, and not just for angst, that's just for any type of story!

Attention to Details:

Now this one is heavily a “my opinion” one. The attention to details and how that attention is brought.

Now details when making a story can be anything, from a theme to symbolism. Or sometimes it’s just that one character remembered something that's so small about them but jesus christ you remembered that one thing I have to remind everyone else or no one has ever seemed to notice.

One great example that has made me emotional 😒 is @starry-bi-sky Clone^2 AU, she has talked about it a lot, but the significance of Danny’s hands, the scars on them. (Spoilers, I suppose I should mention)

What they mean, yeah in the moment, in every moment, it’s Danny kinda being a dumbass and catching this tiny Dami’s blade in his hands. But down the line, it shows how he didn't give up, how he wasn't fighting the small child but fighting for him. Fighting for his future.

There’s plenty of posts written by Starry about the hands and other moments between them. The significance of the hands is already emotional, now add in connection and history.

For that AU the Damian and Danny we follow are clones of Damian Wayne and Bruce Wayne (DC), so we have that, but Danny is still Danny Fenton (Danny Phantom).

There are layers to the connections the reader has to these characters, Bruce and Damian being characters that have thousands of hours worth of content for you to somehow grow connected. Damian has been cloned before in Cannon and killed by that clone, so the drama of that is enough to make you want to hold your breath.

Now Danny Phantom has history with clones, Dani Phantom. You already have Danny’s experience with them and the idea of them. But then Starry makes Danny a clone of B, and he has to come to terms with that, and soon following that is a clone of the guy’s kid??

There's a quite a bit going here, and it works. We have established care for the characters, now we add a few layers of cannon fuckery, then something to focus on: Danny’s dilemma of taking in his reality (which I didn't get into), and Danny’s hands representing his immediate dedication to Damian.

Another example of his dedication is him learning Arabic and teaching Damian English, lord I love them helpp😭

So conclusion,

It doesn't matter what you choose to do, it's how you focus on it. How is it significant to the story or characters? What are the possible lasting effects? And of course, does this make sense?

Just ask how it fits with the characters or story, whether its a one-shot or multi-chapter.

Dad strength

Jason: Ugghhh, I can't believe I lost to an old man. Bruce is like 50 something. How is he so strong?

Bruce: I am 40.

Dick: To be fair, he beats all of us in arm wrestling. And I think he is putting his Batman face but he doesn't even twitch while wrestling with you.

Damian: And humiliate myself? I have self respect Todd.

Tim: Yeah, no. I'm already running low on my energy drink. I don't think I can even lift a finger right now.

Cass: I am agile, not strong. If Jason can't beat him, I probably can't too.

Steph: How are you so strong anyway?

Bruce: Dad strength.

Jason: Bullshit.

Dick: Dad strength is real?

Damian: Is that why you keep bringing in new children, father?

*Entering the living room*

Duke: Hey, guys. Danny's here. He has some burgers with him.

Danny: Way to rat out my lunch, dude.

Duke: You have like 2 dozen burgers there. Ain't no way you are eating all of that.

Danny: You don't know that. I could totally eat all of this.

Duke: Sure you can. What are all of you doing on the coffee table? And why does Jason look like he wants to shoot Bruce.

Steph: He lost to Bruce in arm wrestling.

Tim: And Bruce says the only reason he is strong is because of Dad strength.

Duke: You're exaggerating. Bruce can't be that strong.

-2 minutes later-

Duke: I take back what I say.

Danny: Oh I want to try. I've been lifting a lot recently. Look at this. *Flex almost nonexistent muscle*

Tim: Yeah, sure dude. Looks great.

Damian: Your sarcasm is dripping, Drake. And there is no way you are beating father, Fenton.

Danny: Oh just you wait.

-1 minute later-

Jason: What The Fuck.

Dick: You're joking, Bruce. Tell me you're joking.

Jason: There is no fucking way I am weaker than this twink. He looks more malnourished than when I was a street kid.

Damian:*Frowns heavily*

Steph and Cass: *Laughing at Jason's, Bruce's and Dick's shocked face*

Tim: How are you so strong?

Danny: Dad strength.

Bruce: You need to tell the rest of the family, but mostly Dick.

Tim: why...?

Bruce, remembering how mad Dick got when he didn't tell him about Jason or literally any other kid: just trust me, it's not worth it

Tim: but I haven't told Kon yet *biggest pouty face ever made*

Bruce: Tim, he's still dead... isn't he?

Tim: I mean... for now.

Bruce:

Tim: FINE. Give her back to me then.

Bruce: ... five more minutes?

*Later:*

Dick: Hey guys, what was so important I had to get here so quick? Is everyone okay? Did someone... y'know?

Bruce: Opposite, actually.

Tim: I had a baby

Dick: you fucking what.

Tim: I had baby.

Tim: lil bubba

Tim: I made it myself :)

Tim, holding up his baby girl: see!

Dick, rapidly going through several emotions at once before letting out such a high pitched squeal that Clark Kent breaks a mug out of shock: A BABY!!!

Tim: a baby!

Bruce: a baby...

Damian, who had come out of his room as soon as he saw that Dick had gotten to the house via his trackers: a baby?

Tim: not for you, go away

Bruce: Tim.

Tim: what? She may have been a scientific miscalculation but she is mine and I will not risk her being stabbed by your miscalculation baby.

Damian: what did you just call me?!

Tim: you heard me!

The baby stirring and whining:

Tim: shhh, it's okay little one. Did Damian's shouting upset you? That's very mean of him, isn't it? It's okay, it's okay

Dick: omg im an uncle

Tim: yes you are!

Dick: and who's the mother?

Tim: 1 am.

Dick: oh... okay, then who's the dad?

Tim, in all seriousness: Kon.

Dick, naturally assuming Kon came back to life like people do all the time: oh, he's back?

Bruce, making a silencing motion:

Tim, trying not to cry: not yet...

Damian: I am confused, why does Drake have a child?

Bruce: he was trying to clone his dead best friend and accidentally mixed his DNA with one of the subjects and made a clone hybrid baby.

Dick: more like dead situationship but okay

Damian: oh, like my brother but an acciden

Bruce: your WHAT?

Tim: yeah! But she's going to grow up like a normal human/kryptonian clone baby and not in like a week.

Damian: very well, I will craft some training weapons for her so she can at least have a chance fitting into this family.

Tim: no the fuck you will not Tim: I mean fudge

Damian: she will also grow up without a father apparently.

Tim: oh like Slade is a better option? And also, so did you???

Damian: beside the point. This baby will be too much like its parents, you are better to let someone else raise her so she won't be a blubbering fool.

Tim: secondly, you're saying that Taliah is a good role model for parenting? When was the last time you spoke to her that didn't involve her using your or Bruce for your granddaddy? Huh?

Damian: ...

Tim: that's what I thought.

Bruce: maybe we should calm-

Tim: and anyway, now that I'm a mother I understand a lot more and I'm not letting you raise my kid because you are a kid, Damian. I know your almost fifteen but that doesn't change the fact that you have Child Developmental Syndrome as well as severe CPTSD and deserve to be carefree and not hold as many responsibilities as some people, *glares at Bruce* seem to think is okay!

Tim: so, no, you can't take my baby but you can be in her life because while I still kind of hate you and think you should suffer for trying to kill me and cutting my line, I can truely see now that you are a baby yourself.

Tim: now, who is going to help me pick out a paint for the nursery l'm making at my apartment?

Damian: ...

Bruce: ...

Dick, who has been slowly inching forward to try hold the baby: ...

Damian, still seething but also a little... honoured?: may I suggest the colour China Rose?
