#dms can make mistakes on balance

I think this episode is a good example of when bad luck stacks to make what seems like a very tough, but not unbeatable situation; look like a fully unbeatable situation in all scenarios.

They had an absolute jungle of disadvantages, beyond the ones Matt put specifically as a challenge. They were already drained, they all failed dex saves when she hit the crawler, they all rolled very poor on initiative while Otohan rolled super well, they committed hard to a plan of action that was probably the least likely to succeed (fight), which made it very hard to switch to run, they rolled pretty poorly in the fight while Matt rolled well, or made choices that ended up being the wrong one, I could go on and on.

They worked well within their disadvantages, pretty damn well, actually, but they were also just shit out of luck. Even if every choice wasn’t ideal, it is so hard to make the ideal choices in that scenario. No one did anything categorically wrong, but no one was in a good position. Meanwhile, Matt was giving them every advantage he could. I know it didn’t seem like that, but given his DMing style, he was. Matt is very committed to raw and full agency sandbox with almost no retcons. If a player makes a choice in the story, that happens, whatever the consequences (good or bad) be. He runs simulations. He puts components in a scenario, and watches what happens, and he won’t pull back for his or his player’s advantage.

But, he also always aims to help the players when they’re up against a wall. He will never take that wall away, but he’ll ease the gap a little, or, in the worst scenarios, try to point them in the most survivable direction away from the wall.

You can see it here, he gave them opportunities he would never give in other situations. Always ruling in favor of them on contentious rules, letting them do mild retcons of actions, giving them time to think and communicate as players that he usually doesn’t, stuff like that. But most importantly, he didn’t start dragging Imogen towards the conclusion of needing to give in until he knew it was their only option. Perhaps that was always the most successful solution, or the one they were most pointed to, but he didn’t start nearly forcing it till he knew it was pretty much their only way out.  And the things is? This kind of thing just happens in games. I’m not saying you can’t dislike what happened, or you should “get over it,” or you have to agree with every ruling or choice, or anything like that. But I’ve seen some people who seem personally mad at Matt for what happened, and treating it like he purposefully railroaded them to this exact outcome, which I find a little ludicrous.

It can change depending on your table, but generally speaking, this is always an option in any game you play. Bad luck, tough scenarios, no major punches pulled. This can happen, and it can suck, but it isn’t a personal attack from the DM to the players. The game is about random chance, it’s built on dice. There is always the possibility that this will happen. A bad scenario going to a totally fucking fucked scenario happens. I’ve been in them before.

So, yes, you can have whatever opinion you want. If you think Matt shouldn’t have balanced the encounter this way, or anything like that, I’m not here to stop you. But I do want to remind everyone that this isn’t something Matt had to specifically engineer to end like this, this is an example of the worst case scenarios that do exist in dnd.

(Alright, it's long post time again, this time about the Admin Drama)

So we're hearing a lot about some behind-the-scenes drama, and unfortunately, it's making a lot of things make a lot more sense in retrospect

For example, the fact that French Creators have been consistently overlooked makes sense when you learn that there have apparently only been 2 French Admins on the team, with one of them being fired recently, and the other one being potentially removed from the whitelist for the server, for reasons that are likely not even true

Throughout big events, there's always been a sense that people weren't 100% sure what was going on, and if I'm being honest, I found that at least somewhat excusable at the time

This is a big project, bigger than any other Minecraft-Related project I know about, with over a dozen different content creators and at least 5 different languages. I can understand at least to a certain point, that trying to balance that many different storylines, and keep the overarching storyline intact, can be a challenge, that I doubt many people would have the sufficient experience to deal with properly, especially with all the other added hurdles of managing the language/culture barrier. I was willing to chalk it up to Growing Pains, that they were realizing the mistakes as they happened and would hopefully not repeat them in the future

(Basically, to me it felt like a DND Campaign, where each player does have the choice to make their own stories and character arcs in said Campaign. However, it's up to the DM's discretion on what they can use, since they still have to keep the overarching plot going. While they should try as hard as they can to include what makes each player happy, there might be a point that what the player wants to do isn't compatible with the current plan, and it's up to the DM whether or not they can actually do it)

However, to at least some extent, that is clearly not the case. It's been made very apparent that someone, likely multiple people on the Admin Team, is horribly mismanaging things that we aren't able to see fully. From manufacturing drama, to taking advantage of passionate people who simply love the project, to outright ignoring some of the Content Creators that are also keeping this project alive and therefore being actively detrimental to this communication-based project

As of now, I'm hearing that Quackity himself doesn't seem to have much to do with this directly. And once again, if that's true, I can understand it, at least a little. Running a project and participating in that project can be difficult, and be actively detrimental to their enjoyment. So to a certain point, I can understand not being SUPER heavily involved in every single thing behind-the-scenes and leaving some of it to other people. However, this is clearly not working. If he really didn't know much about what was going on, then he either needs to find someone he can actively trust to make sure this sort of thing doesn't continue, or take a much heavier role in the management to keep it from happening again

He's said before that he's been losing money because of QSMP but doesn't care because it's his passion project, and I would like to believe that. From what we've seen, he does actively love doing this, and seems to be really passionate about breaking down these communication barriers, and he has done a lot to that end. But it can't come at the expense of others, who are the backbone of these sorts of projects. I really hope he does something to take care of this, even it it means shutting down QSMP temporarily to do a complete overhaul of Admin Management

(I would also like to say that if Pomme's admin really gets permanently fired for all of this, I'll be actually seriously upset. She's put way too much time and effort into the server (FOR FREE, WE NOW KNOW) and has been playing alongside numerous CCs and boosting the enjoyment of them as well as the people watching them. Not to mention that she's now the ONLY French Admin at the moment that we know of, and not having ANY French Admins would be a serious problem)

I've loved QSMP almost since it started, and I would love to see it continue. But it can't be at the expense of peoples' health, mental health, and livelihoods. If people are doing work like this, they deserve to be compensated appropriately, and treated right. Otherwise, there isn't a point in this. Here's hoping that these problems can be properly addressed and resolved, and I hope everyone is alright during whatever happens next

ok so i have like fifteen other asks but i need to address this first because it's been an issue for nearly a month now and these anons tried to find my main and did what i think was an attempt at doxing me.

this is a post to spread awareness to my followers, despite the person concerned not being aware that i'm doing this at this moment (i will tag them and DM them about it soon). long post, but important.

i may reblog this with additional info in the future, so if you feel this gives limited information check the reblogs or comments.

these anons tried scarying me off of running my blog by constant harassment for days straight, which thankfully stopped as i ended up blocking them. as you can see they ended up bypassing my block or asked someone from another account to continue the harassment and attempts at inducing fear. frankly, what this is causing me is anger as im not the only one involved in this unfortunately.

one of the first hate anons on this blog was a spam of four or more anons asking me if i was the person the anon im replying to is mentioning here. i didn't think much of it as they came with another roughly dozen of hate anon spam which (surprise surprise/s) disappeared in its entirety once i blocked one of them. meaning a single person was harassing me.

i ended up contacting the person these anons were thinking i was, and decided to not reply to the first batch of hate, as first they had the url fully typed out in the ask and I didn't want to expose the person concerned, and second I didn't want to bother any of my followers with one salty hater. they were as weirded out as me that they got involved into this without any logical link between my main, their main, or this sideblog, asides from the fact that they were one of the handful of people that supported me early on and even accepted in dms to share my blog to a discord server (a small one, but they were excited about my blog and asked if i was ok with them sharing it and i said ok).

i had asked them to not make a callout post on their own blog about this nor to go and harass anyone. which they didn't. additionally, i sent them screenshots of the hate anons and explained to them that i didn't want to put their blog url publicly by answering the anon as I felt it was a safety issue. but they insisted that they didn't mind it and that if i changed my mind about the whole issue and decided to go public i would.

the insistence of this anon on trying to find my main was confusing to me at first. i did not choose to remain anonymous on here for privacy reasons, hell, not even safety reasons. i deal with worse bullshit on main than here. i wanted this blog mainly to have an anonymous moderator as a way to leave space for the community voices. i felt like a faceless blog was a more welcoming environment than having the baggage of a whole person, moral alignments, blend into a space that's catered towards a specific goal and discussion. which to be fair was a huge hit for my ego. id love to share my full identity with y'all and have the accomplishments of this blog linked to me. but im stubborn and attached to my values.

to put it simply, i did not want to make the same mistake as the admin from @narcissisticpdcultureis did.

that being said, i did not lie on any of my values linked with my DNI. i wanted this blog to be accessible to cluster b personality disorder havers and the wider community regardless of their backgrounds, but with some limits for my own mental health and personal boundaries, that i tried keeping limited. notably regarding discourse. of any kind. and as another addition for resources in the npd and cluster b community. just as another community space, not a monopoly.

despite the amount of hate and adversity expressed from the admin of @narcissisticpdcultureis , i had not made this blog with adversity, harassment, anger, or "rebellion" in mind. unlike how the admin seemed to take my act of creating my own digital space and express emotional distain for my blog for the sake of existing. blaming me of doing so to put them in a bad light, while the only thing i did was point out information they already had made accessible to the public about themselves in their pinned post. which i didn't give a moral alignment to it, just stated that i was personally uncomfortable with it.

i am not condoning harassment, but I will not police your actions either. this individual(s) had put the url of my sideblog publicly in a rant of theirs aimed to put me and my work in a bad light without regards of my safety or mental health, and lead many, potentially themselves personally as well, to put me through constant anonymous harassment while i had expressed since the beginning i didn't want to be affiliated or interact with their blog, and never mentioned their url publicly up to now, to avoid the same scenario that just happened to me from their doing.

additionally, in their rant about my blog, they mentioned another npd culture that apparently was created adjacent to theirs, potentially for similar reasons as mine although this is unknown.

im gonna say one thing.

if anything, i like the attention. you decided that i, a small account, who didn't have the self estime to ever think would get traction, caused enough of a problem to make your, way more popular, blog feel threatened. i feel honored.

Fabula Nova Crystallis: The Mythology

I was trying to dig this video up to show a friend and it occurred to me that holy shit, it's become almost impossible to find this video that Square Enix only showed once at a conference in January 2011, and we're lacking in a proper English translation for it.

So I'm going to put it here for archival purposes and hope tumblr doesn't take it down, along with a translated transcript. I'll be working off Lissar's and FFWorld's translations of the video, using the canon names for the various entities (yes I know "soul" is technically a mistranslation of 心 heart but it is the canon one so hush).

Since I had extra time on my hands, I also put it up on Vimeo with subtitles on. I can provide the srt file (the syncing isn't super tight but since there's a lot of blank space around each line I decided to leave each subtitle for longer than necessary), if anyone's willing to work on translations, you can DM me.

Fabula Nova Crystallis, the new tale of the crystal

Once upon a time, the god Bhunivelze ruled the world. Bhunivelze defeated his mother, the goddess Mwynn, and took control of the world for himself. Mwynn disappeared into the unseen realm.

Bhunivelze was troubled: the world he now ruled over was destined to die. He believed this was a curse laid on the world by his mother Mwynn. He knew he had to destroy her to lift the curse. To do this, he set out to search for the door to the unseen realm where his mother waited. Using his will alone, he created the first fal’Cie.

First, he created the fal’Cie Pulse. The Focus he gave him was to clear out the world, and search for the door to Mwynn.

Next, he created the fal’Cie Etro. But it was a mistake. Unknowingly, he created her exactly in the image of Mwynn. Bhunivelze feared her, and gave Etro no power of her own.

Instead, he created the fal’Cie Lindzei. The Focus he gave him was to protect Bhunivelze from all who might seek to destroy him. Bhunivelze gave Lindzei one special duty. To wake him once the time came. Then he turned to crystal, and fell into an endless sleep.

Pulse wished to expand the world, so he created many fal’Cie and l’Cie.

Lindzei wished to protect the world, so he created many fal’Cie and l’Cie.

But Etro was powerless, and could make nothing of her own. Lonely, she thought of her mother, who she so resembled. Etro tore her own body apart, letting her blood flow to the earth, and disappeared from the visible world. From that blood, torn from her body, sprang humankind. Creatures that were born only to die.

The destruction of the visible world was no curse, only fate. The world was divided into two halves, the visible and the invisible. If the balance between these two were destroyed, the world itself would be destroyed.

The goddess Mwynn could do nothing to stop this fate. She was being swallowed into the chaos of the unseen realm. Just before her last moment, Etro came to her side. Mwynn told Etro that she must protect the balance of the world, before slipping into the chaos forever. But Etro was ignorant of the meaning behind Mwynn’s words.

Etro was lonely, but she felt affection for those humans who live only to die. As they died, she smiled, and gave them chaos. The chaos Etro gave them, the humans named “souls”. Their hearts would become their power, but the humans did not yet know this.

Soon, they called Pulse the all powerful ruler. Lindzei they named their protector, and Etro they named their goddess of death. The humans lived on the world, hold chaos inside their hearts. Because they held chaos so close, the world once again was in balance.

And Bhunivelze still sleeps in crystal stasis. Until the end of days, awaiting the right time.

I just finished sonic prime and I am inconsolable

And not just for the ending

I'm trying to find shadow and sonic stuff but....not ship. Don't get me wrong, I totally see the parallels and I get why it's propular

Which is why I'm beyond devastated that no matter how much I twist and turn, I simply cannot ship them, which is new for my multishipper ass

I can only seem to see them as brothers and nothing more, shadow being an older brother to him is just....idk comforting

And there isn't enough content for that, in 1 hour I already read all the fics there were of them in ao3 that happaned post prime that were platonic, my sister is looking for fanart maybe but only finds ship art and we are both beyond sad

Again, this isn't a dunk in the ship, and more frustration that I cannot join in on the hype 😭😭😭

I'm am inconsolable mess and I wish that there was a balance between the ship and brotherly relationship. I do not wish to abolish the ship, I simply ask for more brotherly stuff between them 😭😭😭

Your works so perfectly capture a lot of the aesthetics my mind is so hfdgshgfdusdfug ooga booga about, dreamlike regality, cold/muted colors are so good --- but I struggle really hard with making works I can enjoy and would love some advice from you!

** let me start this off with all art is subjective. what works for some, won't for others - and that's okay! aesthetic is VERY much so up to the eye of the beholder. yes there are Popular choices when it comes to art, but it's not a guarantee that Everyone is going to follow the same art rules when consuming media **

now then. i'm kind of a stickler for the traditional Rule of Thirds with a bunch of my artwork. I keep things loosely aligned between the grid lines.

for example with the ice guardian here, there's more or less an even balance of light and dark on either side of the image. the dark on one side is mirrored by light on the other. i don’t follow the rule of thirds firmly, so there’s going to be some vague offset from the grid itself which is fine.

the key point i want to mention here is that the majority of the body is contained to the middle box. this is because if the guardian was perfectly centred, then the whole art would look unbalanced.

you may notice that the art feels pushed to one side, even though the body of the canine is placed evenly in the canvas’ middle. their head seems too far left and they end up feeling like they're not centred at all. this CAN work for some art yes! but to balance this particular piece, the bulk of the canine's body Had to be in the middle.

I like to apply the most weight of an image to any of the grid’s intersections, the middle square, or centred along the sides of the canvas. if i do put weight in one of the corners, it’s often balanced by mirrored weight in the opposite; like with this piece:

keep in mind that there are numerous composition types. the grid isn't the allmighty end-all composition trick - and these aren't strict rules either; unless you're taking an art class for a grade. YES they can absolutely help give your art that extra edge, but not all art HAS to follow these tricks in order to be good. here are more composition types beyond the grid [below graphic is from here]

now, when it comes to inspiration, i also struggle with this sometimes. if there's a vague fleeting idea that i want to draw, i go to where i'll gain the most inspiration for that piece.

for the above art, i know i wanted to do something Large and Cold - so I went to a favourite choice that fits that description: photos of greenland. these photos are from http://www.unsplash.com.

these had the kind of colours i wanted to work with, and i was VERY fond of the colours in the second and third, so i utilized these as a colour palette and scenery inspo [free iceberg art study! fantastic!]

now, there was no particular "what if there was a little freak in there" moment for me. i chose a photo, dabbed my colour picker tool in there, and just went to town doodling. eventually the art wound up being a companion piece to Return To Shore, a drawing i did back in July, but hey that's okay. i guess my brain really wanted to draw another old Big Dog.

i cannot say i put a lot of planning into my art beyond a few adjectives. i feel it’s better to be vague with your art like this because if you’re hyper-specific about what you want to make you may get frustrated and/or discouraged if it doesn’t turn out like you hoped. this is very much so a personal choice. if you can churn out exactly what you plan in art then that’s totally fine if it works for you. i just prefer to doodle and see where that takes me.

some random d&d advice

aka ‘don’t repeat my mistakes’

mostly applies to campaigns that lean towards a balance of combat, storytelling and roleplay, rather than straight dungeon crawls, since those are the games i prefer

Come to the campaign knowing what motivates your character. It doesn’t have to be elaborate or fancy, but going into a game without any actual driving force or interest makes it a lot more challenging to roleplay and get engaged with the story.

Find at least one (1) reason for why your character is sticking with this group. Because D&D is, in most circumstances, a group game — constantly stretching for in-game reasons to stay does not make a fun experience. It doesn’t need to be fancy or even nice, it just needs to be.

If you’re feeling frustrated, dissatisfied, not listened to, etc… speak up sooner rather than later. Express what you’re feeling and why it’s making the game less enjoyable. If your DM and fellow players are good, they’ll be willing to take a step back and find a way to make it fun for everybody.

If you’re having conflict or issues above-table with a specific person — DM or player — find time outside of the game to talk to them about it. Bring a mediator if you feel you need or want one. Work through issues before they become deal-breakers.

For DMs — consider just doing a time skip if there is nothing players can do to progress a plot faster in-game. Maybe do a loose system of ‘roll for each day to find xyz clues or achieve abc tasks’, rather than having them roleplay through specific actions and encounters that will not actually affect anything. Let them know ‘okay, this process will take x amount of time in-game, how do you want to spend it?’

For players — your character’s backstory is a collaboration between you and the DM. Don’t hesitate to get into the details with them. The more they know about who your character is and what their external and internal realities are, the better they’ll be able to weave those into the world and make the role playing engaging and compelling for you.

Conflict is not anathema to a good game. In-game conflict can be incredibly dynamic and fulfilling, if you are able to communicate safely with your party above-table about it. Never feel like you can’t ask to pause a scene to check in out of character.

Sometimes an arc or session will focus more on one character than on others. Players — let that player and character have their limelight. DM — try to find ways to let the other players/characters be involved too, because it will help them stay invested and engaged in the moment.

D&D is not a competition. It’s collaborative. There’s no need to one-up each others’ Tragic Backstories, no need for everybody to have the exact same types of solo scenes or significant NPC encounters or plot trajectories. Each character is different, and the story is at its best when they come together and create unique dynamics.

You don’t have to do accents or consistent voices, but do try to make it clear who is speaking — for a DM, that means trying to make some distinction between NPCs, even if you’re just saying what the voice sounds like. For players, that means trying to be clear on what you’re saying in character versus out of character. Obviously, this won’t happen all the time, but it’s worth trying to be aware of, especially if you’re not playing in-person.

Ultimately, the RAW are more like [Barbossa voice] guidelines. Play in the way that is the most enjoyable for you and your party. Homebrew or bend what you want to, to create the game you all collectively want to play. As long as everyone is having a good time, there is no such thing as playing D&D wrong.

And following that last point, obviously if any of these tips would make the game unenjoyable for you and your table, then they don’t apply! Toss them out!

Main takeaway — communication is key, you’re all in this together, and everyone deserves to enjoy the game.

Goals for 2024

Lately, I’ve been in a mental slump, but I want to change that. 2023 was a year of major setbacks which is why I need to work hard for 2024. I need to get back on track and catch up with my peers and make my younger self proud. So right now, I’ve been preparing preparations and experimenting with routines and just hyping myself up. I want to achieve these and have a plan that isn’t that much effort but effective and efficient. They will be mistakes but I need to accept and push my self through it because in the end, it’s only you who can do the things you want and your life/situation can be changed.

Grades

My grades aren’t up to standard that I’ve set for myself and I appear to be slacking off in class—especially math. I failed my Math final. So I would like to change this. I want to concentrate more in school and because of that I’ve looked at who/what was distracting me and decided to cut it off. I’ve left platforms like Discord (still kept instagram, YouTube, and tumblr to document my progress (my biggest showcase of what I could do— my channel is @scarasun) I’ve also cut off a bunch of distracting friends (or ones that I know I can’t get work done with them) and I’ve been training myself lately (with push-ups/curlups for PE and just relearning Math. I want to show more effort in my craft.

Habits and Mentality

I want to create a better work ethic (or have the work ethic I used to have at my rigorous Catholic school) and work to complete my goals. I want to implement routines that I feel would suit better for me and just care for myself. During 2023, I didn’t care about my well-being and that end up becoming sick a lot. Right now, I’ve educated myself in hair care and also skincare and work to achieve better results. I also want to have effort in my appearance (I used to didn’t care if I looked bad) so I’m pushing myself. Lately I’ve been pushing myself beyond my limits with all of my hobbies. I’ve been practicing on my piano more so I can complete my RCM exams and be on track (I was supposed to complete my exam during late 2022 and early 2023).

Lately, I’m rewinding and twisting my mentality to be more positive and being more accepting of mistakes but to push through. I told myself that pain is alright, and sometimes it will help you complete your goals but it shouldn’t be immense pain and you should feel discomfort. I told myself that emotions are fine but you have to push through and that it’s fine to feel and accept that your situation is what you make of it.

Business

After all our preparations like: setting up the Etsy, setting up the socials, and setting up the website— I want to open my business with my friends (the co owners) with an official release in April but with a soft release in late January (we’re taking commissions right now please dm us at @tinyheartsscozm, tinyheartssco on instagram, or at tinyheartsszm@outlook.com

I want to get the business running and maybe be a part of an event during Mid to Late 2024. Right now, I’ve been crocheting a lot just for stock (but not too much). I’m also creating patterns/designs right now as well and will post. Though, I need to learn how to take breaks and create a balance

Preparations are not fully finished and I wished to test it more. Also, I need to start pumping out more videos and become a better editor. I’ve developed a good time/period and make use of my time with editing— not just for business but also for my sister’s and my branding.

These are some of my goals that I need to complete in 2024! I’ll send progress.
