@augusnippets Day 27. Prompt migraines/chronic pain. Season 3 Ripper Street, the beginning of something that never got finished.

It is a dream that she details, he thinks. In truth, he’s not been paying attention.

Difficult to do so through the infernal ringing that has plagued him intermittently since the clinic, an obnoxious sound that has become too familiar a companion of late. Enough certainly for Reid to recognize it for what it undeniably is. A warning. A herald of further discomfort. The headache flirting with his skull will settle in now, in earnest and inescapable. The only real question how severe it is to be.

He struggles to find the threads of her narrative, to appear as if she has his focus. Mathilda says something about a polar bear; Reid nods as if he understands the reference. She beams at him, and he feels rewarded. For just this moment, not quite so inept as a father.

It’s a sensation fleeting. If – as Jane proposes – Mathilda’s driving desire is simply to spend time with him, he is about to disappoint her once again. The bloody ringing is incessant. Gone fluid, spreading from his right eardrum to coat the whole of his brain, and despite his best intentions he suspects himself incapable of keeping up this pretense of attentiveness for much longer. The shrill noise drowns out nearly every third word. Pain licks at the edges of the healing new hole in his head.

This too will spread, as it inevitably does once the ringing has taken hold. Reid has no wish for his daughter to be witness. He had intended for them to have returned home by this point, but the breaks in the case had come quickly and piled the hours upon themselves; when he’d taken notice of how late it had become – when it had finally occurred that she must surely be hungry – he’d had something brought over from The Bear. He wonders who had cajoled the kitchen into preparing those tiny sandwiches. They look far too delicate to have come from the pub.

He drags his eyes from the bread in her hand back to her face, and curses himself for being unaware that she’d stopped speaking. His thoughts have a disturbing tendency toward distraction since the shooting.

“Daddy?” He more guesses at the shape of her mouth than hears the actual syllables. Reid’s lip reading skills have, by necessity, become much improved. It is not something he particularly wants made common knowledge.

The smile he gives her feels a weak parody; he forces the two fingers massaging another circle into his temple to rejoin the rest of his hand. The hand down to the desk. Words over his tongue, at what he can only hope is a reasonable volume.

“Forgive me, my heart.” He can barely hear his own voice. “There are a few things still to be done, then we shall go home.”

An evasion, but she is merely a child and has not the vocabulary to challenge him on it. The iron vise that’s been slipped around his skull is thick and tightening.

A WIP Intro: What Dahlia Knows

I suppose I should put all the basics of this project that I've been calling "The icy wip," into one post. I've got a title now!

Every night, after Mother’s footsteps faded down the hall, Dahlia knelt in front of her water stained window and prayed that her daddy would never get better. This practice was to make sure he did get better, because Dahlia had discovered through vigorous trial-and-error that whatever she prayed for would never come true.

Summary: It’s been months since Dahlia’s daddy went to the faraway hospital, and she has several thoughts about it. She also has thoughts on more pressing topics, like the how words feel in her mouth, which ice cream flavor to get, and why her favorite enigmatic grocery clerk is following her when she should be propped up in the funeral parlor’s window. Answering these questions will either take her on a journey of self-discovery or leave her horribly confused. Probably a bit of both.

I'm a bit murky about assigning genres and demographics to my work, especially if it's unfinished. For example, categorizing it as "paranormal" puts emphasis on Ruth's ghostliness, which I think is one of the least important things about her. However, in acquiescence to their utility as marketing tools, I'll say the genre is "weird, literary, coming-of-age, historical, paranormal" with its demographic being "middle grade-ish maybe"

Third person limited, past tense

Inspirations: Jostein Gaarder's "Sophie's World," Norton Juster's "The Phantom Tollbooth," Lewis Carroll's "Alice in Wonderland," William Faulkner's "As I lay Dying," James Burke's "Connections" Episode 4 "Faith in Numbers"

Characters:

Dahlia - The main character. Naive, quiet. Isn't good at reading, and has many thoughts about words. And windows. And Ruth.

Emilie - Dahlia's talkative friend. Almost a parody of politeness.

Anderson - Emilie's - and by extension Dahlia's - babysitter. Believes in doing the opposite of what he wants to do in the name of free will.

Ruth - The unfortunate grocery clerk. Surly, enigmatic, dreams of being a weaver, but never gets past embroidery.

Also there's Clue - the content Sisyphus, Nettie - the suspicious ice cream scooper, the solipsists - a pair of solipsists, and Dan - who believes the world is just as it should be.

Status: First draft is halfway done!

The tag for this will remain "#the icy wip" until I'm really settled on a title.

What was the inspiration for each character?

Ramón: I think i just wanted a suave sexy man to have a gentler fatherly side who can be a little silly overall. That subversion of expectation is something I would find endearing and fun to write around. And I think single dads cloud use some love. So maybe dream daddy?

Kalei: I wanted a helpful, sweet, guidance counsler type of character to contrast Ramon. I also incoperated my own struggles with overworking myself.

Noel: i think Mikaela from Owari no seraph (i never finished this series should be noted) and Alpha from Darling in the Franxxx. Mika because he's super broudy and Alpha... Well it was mostly just the hair style. Noel incoperates a lot of tragic tropes and i find it funny he gets compared to every character but the two i actually took for inspiration.

DJ Roadkill: design wise i mishmashed Marshmellow and Deadmaus mascots and made it a bunny. Character wise i was heavily inspired by Panty (PSG), Galo (promare), and Kamina (TTGL) for their loud and confident but well meaning (minus panty) personalities.

Mitts: shes based around the trans in-joke in that trans women end up being programmers/good with computers. So i had the idea to make her a robotics engineer from that!

Rosita: she was heavily inspired by Pinkie pie (MLP) and Mako (KLK)! I love me some cutsey characters that are silly.

Irene: her character, along with Ramon, habe come a long way but i think shes a mix of "parody of straight white woman" and exploring how the lack of a literal childhood and being literally made to punish people effects how they form relationships.

Faye: I just love older dommy mommys who are a little shady.

Cheri: design wise i think i just wanted a red head after watching promised neverland and seeing how cute emma is.

Hordes: Ice King from adventure time and Mr. krabs!

I see why Clem is Contained within his Clemclosure. HOKAY. So what's going on with Amundsen, Nansen, and Johansen? (Also you by no means have to continute to humor my nonsense but you are full of ARCTIC TEA and I'm genuinely so interested.)

SO FIRST OF ALL IT MUST BE SAID I MADE A MAJOR MISTAKE IN THAT CORNER and this is how it should have looked actually (i left out the line between amundsen and nansen):

as you can see there between amundsen and nansen it says "end-stage M&Ms decay." that probably makes no sense so let me back it up. "wanting daddy's M&Ms" is a reference to this succession parody video that has long since curdled into a general way of referring to like. erotically-tinged approval-seeking from a superior????

anyway. i am not by any means a norwegian guys expert so this will not be hugely detailed BUT. this is the basics.... and if you want more detail check out the last viking by stephen brown!

fridtjof nansen was The Big Man in polar exploration, ever since he made the first crossing of greenland on skis when he was only 27 in 1888. incidentally he was big sexy

after greenland, he had the ship Fram purpose-built to survive being trapped in the pack ice and proceeded to head north in 1893 and well, get it trapped in the pack ice. using this unorthodox method he planned to drift with the pack and reach a new furthest north record, and maybe even make it to the pole.

hjalmer johansen, an athlete, skier, & dog driver, was on this expedition, and nansen chose him to accompany him when he left the ship in the middle of the drift (2 years into the expedition) to make a dash for the pole. using dogs and skis they reached 86º14' which was a major record for the time!!!

of course they couldn't... go back to the ship... bc it had drifted while they were gone. so they ended up having the incredible luck to come across Franz Josef Land, an archipelago in the russian arctic, on their way south and ended up wintering there. EVEN CRAZIER, when they left again in the spring they ran into ANOTHER EXPEDITION—the jackson-harmsworth expedition happened to be hanging out in franz josef land too!

sooo ok. furthest north, big deal, blah blah. nansen was now a national and international hero, rich and famous, and took up a professorship to focus on compiling the expedition's scientific reports. he became the Dude Everyone Came To Ask For Polar Advice From - advice which he handed out pretty freely (though not everyone listened... akdjhsdfsfsdf)

roald amundsen had been inspired by nansen since he was young and the man was pretty much his all-time idol. after amundsen's successful transit of the northwest passage in 1906, he was interested in finally pursuing his lifelong dream of being first to the north pole. he was able to convince nansen to let him use the fram to do another north polar drift, and try to make it all the way to the "big nail."

nansen was like ok sure :) as long as you take my buddy johansen :)))) who could really use a gig :)))))))))))

johansen had been uuuhhhh not doing great in the years since getting back from the first fram expedition.

but WHOOPS - in the middle of amundsen's preparations, in 1909, cook and peary happened. ("happened" lol) soooo the north pole was out of the question—at least as far as being first went, and that's p much what mattered to amundsen. it had to be south.

but amundsen couldn't just TELL everyone he was going south. for ummm a lot of reasons mostly related to funding and not wanting all the donors (incl the government) to pull out of the expedition and stop him from going altogether.

and that included... nansen!!!!!!! he literally didn't tell nansen he was taking HIS ship to the complete other side of the planet. bc nansen might have been like "no u cant"

anyway nansen was ok with it when he eventually found out, BUT literally nobody else was lol.

ok fast forward a bit and DURING amundsen's actual south pole expedition johansen was causing a lot of trouble. he and amundsen experienced so much friction that amundsen ended up leaving him out of the final polar party as punishment.

when they return from the south pole to australia, amundsen dismissed johansen from the expedition immediately and ordered him to return to norway separately.

within two years he had committed suicide.

during amundsen's lengthy speaking tour to celebrate his south pole victory, nansen (the consummate scientist and diplomat) is like. ok roald buuuut you really really really have to do that north polar drift now even though they've already been to the north pole. bc you said you would!!!!!!!!!!!

let it be known roald really did not want to lol and kept putting it off and eventually it became his most Cringe Fail Expedition of all time aka the Maud expedition.

his relationship with nansen was complex until the end of his life especially when nansen had to play diplomatic damage control due to some rancid stuff roald published in his memoir. and then nansen outlived him!!!!! and gave his eulogy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [YELLS]

Baldur's Gate 3 Elarys... is she still committing scientific and/or medical cruelty in this universe? do u think that expertise will help her at all when she's unraveling the mystery of the tadpole? Also if she's still Dark Urge, was there ever a time when she caved to the Dark Urge while performing an experiment which made it go even more horrifically wrong. i need to know what heinous things this lady is up to in the Forgotten Realms!!!

yes. in fact, she's worse. heart

the crux of her character will always be the medical atrocities she commits in the name of scientific & medical "advancement", so that definitely will not change. especially since she can leave the bodies as offerings to daddy dearest. she is, in addition to being So Incredibly Abnormal about her experiments, also a decently popular physician because she does do a good job of fixing ailments of all sorts. doctor faustus' clinic, the name of her practice, is set up in the lower city. it looks like a medical practitioner going out of her way to make herself accessible to the less fortunate, but the truth is it's more so she can get away with certain undesirables simply disappearing after they darken her doorstep.

as for the urge, yes. she's an alchemist by training it, using it both to push the limits of medicine/science in general & to operate in her practice. she had a mentor, once, who was something of a mother figure to her, if a cruel one. this is going to get gruesome, so i'll pop it under a cut. a fun fact before i do, though, is that this was going to be her backstory when i planned to move her into pathfinder: wrath of the righteous (which i didn't end up doing)! i kept it because i felt it may yet come in handy, and it did. also, dark urge story spoilers under the cut.

so, with that said, her mentor was her first tormentor, and her first victim.

sceleritas fel reveals that the dark urge struck out on their own for a little while, and i think elarys may have done this when she was very young (by elven standards). this led to her, through some circumstance, finding her way under the wing of a much older elven alchemist who groomed elarys into being the apprentice she'd been seeking for a while. it also turned into a twisted parody of a mother-daughter bond.

she was very cruel and her temperament towards elarys blew hot and cold very quickly; there were times when she would caress her face and call her daughter, call her love, and then the next moment she'd fiercely backhand and berate her. elarys learnt a lot from this alchemist, frequently helping her in the laboratory whilst suffering her abuse all the while. eventually, something that had lain dormant within elarys for a while stirred. i imagine i don't need to say what that something was.

as she had seen her "mother" do before on her less fortunate "patients" (usually the terminally ill, who spent the last of their lives in excruciating agony as the alchemist did all kinds of fell things to them in the name of studying their affliction), she essentially tortured her to death with her own chemicals and surgical tools. she preserved her organs and buried her in the yard. the act itself didn't frighten elarys so much as the semi-conscious, barely-aware state she'd been in as she had done it — not being 100% in control of herself terrifies her. still, she played the grieving daughter and feigned madness when the disappearance was investigated, and none suspected a thing.

eventually, elarys descended into real madness in her loneliness, because all she had for company were her rats and her preserved organs and body parts (though she did and does talk to her corpses when she's done with them before disposing of them). in her madness, she began to dream of speaking with the dead, of bringing the dead back properly in a way that no necromancer had yet achieved. this became her passion project for the next few years before the loneliness became too much to bear. she ended up unearthing her half-rotted "mother" and put her theory to the test, using her preserved organs to assist the reanimation process.

the "mother" was capable of basic, simple communication, but was still for the most part a braindead corpse. but she was also elarys' revenge, as she treated this poor corpse as horribly as the woman she used to be had treated elarys in life while also essentially forcing her to commit to the mother role she'd assigned herself.

this got long and rambly, but two birds with one stone: you got elarys succumbing to the urge + how i've kept necromancy/undeath important to her without playing her as a necromancer.

OVERALL THOUGHTS: What a strange year! The Matrix fics were essentially remixes and the LOTR fics were essentially a fever dream zeitgeist high. I wish that I could have a more steady creative process???? But I’m very proud of the creative work this year and the madness I felt in writing these fics.

PERSONAL FAVORITE: The moment in “I’d like to hold her head underwater” where Galadriel has a fantasy of fucking Halbrand into a dying Sauron’s armored body. “And wonderfully, exquisitely, she feels that weak dark spirit shamed at the ignominy of this dark choice.” FUCKING A, LIZZEN.

MOST UNDERAPPRECIATED: I actually feel quite happy with the appreciation I received for all of my fics this year. The kudos may be low on The Matrix ones but my matrix fam had wonderful things to say about them. Britomart keeps tagging me in a discord server as she introduces folk to “See your enemy”, the best. Crave could use more love but LET’S BE REAL. CRAVE COULD DESERVE A FUCKING NEXT CHAPTER, YA COCK TEASE.

MOST POPULAR: “But mine is as hungry as the sea” by every metric. It’s incredible, do NOT get me wrong, I love the shit out of this fic, it truly was a demon I had to exorcize into gorgeous words and tragic romantic angst – BUT it’s popular bcs I gamed the zeitgeist timing LETTUCE BE QUITE REAL. In my old age, I’m very wise to the methodologies of fic popularity. XX

STORY WITH THE SEXIEST MOMENT: So, what I love the best about  “But mine is as hungry as the sea” is that I couldn’t have Gal and Hal talk to each other if at the VERY least he was finger banging her. AT THE VERY LEAST. Like. My parody version of that fic is them having benign boring conversations as he’s three fingers in and she’s lost count of how much she’s come. Second place is the same fic where I talk about her being sticky and him shaking BECAUSE I AM TRASH (affectionate). 

MOST FUN STORY TO WRITE: The posted chapter of Crave was such a fun time. The bulk of it just flowed out of me in like an HOUR. I just love monsterfucking and a woman who is AS HUNGRY AS THE SEA. It just had so much delicious promise. UGHHH, so much fun.

HARDEST: Hahahahahaha the unposted finish to Crave. What have I done. Writing a kink with specific tropes for a pairing where I am resistant to those tropes being used with them? HAHAHAHAH. WHAT AM I DOING. (I’ll make it work and people will like it or they won’t!). 

BIGGEST SURPRISE: Having the exact same fever dream zeitgeist high while writing like I did after TLJ in December 2017. I thought that was like a cocaine high and I’d never feel it again. I THOUGHT I WAS DEAD INSIDE. (I’m back to being a little dead inside so…. that’s…….. fun for me and my therapist.) (WORKING ON IT.)

DID YOU TAKE ANY RISKS IN WRITING THIS YEAR? Writing the first RPF fic for The Rings of Power. NEW LOTRPS JUST DROPPED, BAYBEEEE. It was initially locked, but then I opened it back up because I was like, “this fandom can behave with rpf, right?” Hahaha, nah bro, so it’s locked up again and I’m unlikely to write another (until there’s new irl canon i guess?). 

MOST UNINTENTIONALLY TELLING STORY: Y’all here know how I feel about Charlie’s Sauron scholarship, so you can’t be surprised that I have Morfydd jump him immediately after she learns about it. SHRUG!

FAVORITE LINES/SCENES: Honestly, the entire tease for the Trinity + Groff!Smith. Fucking brilliant work. “I accept your terms,” she says. “I didn’t make any,” he says, weak. “Exactly,” she replies.

2023 WRITING AMBITIONS: Write more steadily and consistently. Get back into the drabble mode. Make time, take time, just do it. It doesn’t have to be groundbreaking, it just has to be creating something. The joy of creation is like nothing else. Chase that high.

The return of Sugar Belle EDIT: DANG IT! it’s Hard to Say Anything.

We’re with the Cutie Mark Crusaders who found a bunch of disguises when they happen to notice that Big Mac is delivering a bunch of apples to Starlight’s old village… Again. Curious, they decide to stowaway on the Apple Cart to find out the deal. Turns out, it seems both Big Mac and Sugar Belle have a thing for each other, but neither of them took that first step. So when the girls confront Big Mac about it, He admits it, but also admits he’s afraid to take that first step.

It also doesn’t help that another pony named Feather Bang is interested. So Big Mac, being desperate, decides to ask for the advice of three little girls who have not been in a serious relationship and are taking their ideas out of a fairy tale book.  Surely this will work. But since the meat and potatoes are the failed attempts at wooing Sugar Belle, let’s talk about three specific things…

First, they referenced Hearts and Hooves Day a lot. They sank the ship with Big Mac and Cheerilee. Big Mac is still mad at them about the love potion and DEMANDED no potions. While others may think it’s unnecessary, the important thing to me… Second, Feather Bang is someone I presume is based on Justin Bever. While I have not seen a lot of him (the only song I really listened to was Beauty and the Beat), based on the parodies I’ve seen he connects a lot of dots.

Finally, I’m not a fan of the songs. This is a cringe comedy I am not enjoying. But because I usually tuned them out of memory, I never realized that “Be My Lightning Bliss” was a parody of one of the songs here. It really shows how context can change how a song works out. Like the FNF Song “Deathmatch” when I hear it gives me Undertale “Hopes and Dreams” vibes but was really for the final stand of Daddy Dearest against the Corruption that took over Boyfriend.

With Sugar Belle mad at both of them, Big Mac realizes that Sugar Belle isn’t a fantasy Princess, she’s a real pony with real needs. Like a bigger display case. So with Scootaloo distracting Sugar Belle, the Apples work on the new Display Case as Sweetie is on Lookout. Luckily Scootaloo did her job long enough so they could complete it. She looks like she really appreciates it. Like REALLY appreciates it.

Big Mac Apologizes and the Crusaders leave because this is a TV-Y series and it honestly looks like they’re going for an HBO show. And this relationship will be revisited again and again until we get wedding bells. It ends with Feather Bang asking for advice from the Crusaders because he’s all show and no substance. It ends with them agreeing to help him connect to these three groupies. Should be an easy slam dunk.

But this story continues in the 2018 Gameloft Hearts and Hooves Day Limited Story. Feather Bang is ready to take their advice, but he wants to know who they are on the inside so the girls go to them to find out what they’re made of… First we meet Swoony Fanfilly, the Unicorn of the trio. Thing is, she's also thinking about why she likes Feather Bang. Luckily for her Blaze the Wonderbolt arrived to help her sort out her feelings. And while Swoony claims to be happy being single right now, I'm betting she's now eying a certain Wonderbolt.

Enraptured Fanfilly, the Earth Pony, was wondering how Sugar Belle got his attention before her. Even if he got him now, she still wonders why not before. So she thinks it's because of the baking Sugar Belle did. So Apple Bloom's quest is to get a baked good from Sugar Belle so Enraptured can stop being enraptured by wondering. Sugar Belle's shop is being built and Big Mac is there as well. Since they needed bits, Apple Bloom helps by getting some more. She gets an Apple Cinnamon-bun pie but despite trying it, Enraptured feels worse since it just makes her feel more down on herself. And then Blaze shows up again to pep talk Enraptured out of her funk. She was so busy being jealous of Sugar Belle, she forgot her own talent for mummenschanz puppetry.

And if any of you know your basic pattern recognition, you probably know what’s going to happen with Giddy Fanfilly, the Pegasi of the trio. Scootaloo finds her in the windmill practicing dancing. She's terrible but the music is catchy. She always loved his slick moves, but she did ballet, what more can I say. So Scootaloo tries to help give Giddy some new dance moves that are modern. But while she got the DJ and the outfit, Scootaloo realizes she's not an expert at modern dancing either. And 3... 2... 1... BLAZE shows up willing to teach her about Jazz-Funk and Poppin'. But she still fails and is sad she can't relate to Feather Bang. Another Blaze pep talk later she's all in on ballet that Feather Bang is out of the picture.

The girls report back to him about what they found out. To sum it up, one did it because she wanted to support her friends, another was crazy jealous until talked into appreciating her own talents, the third one thought she needed to change but was told that differences are what makes things work and all three of them were talked to by a Wonderbolt named Blaze. Hearing all these options and having a patented Cutie Mark Crusaders Hearts and Hooves Day Card, Feather Bang makes his choice: Blaze. He asks her to be his special somepony and she accepts. Yay, mega happy ending!

Overall, while the episode is great for setting up Big/Belle, I do like the addition Gameloft made more. Made those three fillies more than just Gaston’s duplicates. And no cringe comedy. Click here for the original review.

actually dream daddy is bad bc it set out to parody a genre it had no understanding of and made a bastardization of it, and is one of the biggest factors responsible for the current state of western visual novels. which is to say that they all think they're parodying a genre which doesn't actually exist. also it was by the game grumps (horrible people)
