Making Memories, Not Mayhem: Your Guide to Traveling with Kids
The thought of traveling with kids can conjure images of serene family bonding... quickly followed by visions of airport meltdowns, car seat chaos, and picky eating in unfamiliar places. Let's be real: traveling with little ones is different. But different doesn't mean impossible, and it certainly doesn't mean it's not worthwhile!
With a little planning, patience, and the right mindset, family travel can be an incredible way to create lasting memories and broaden horizons (yours and theirs!). Forget perfection; aim for connection and adventure. Here are some tried-and-true tips to help make your next family trip smoother and more enjoyable:
1. Plan Smart, Not Hard
Involve the Kids (Age Appropriately): Show older kids maps, pictures, or videos of the destination. Let them pick an activity or two. Feeling involved gives them ownership and excitement.
Kid-Friendly Destinations & Stays: Look for places with parks, pools, kid-friendly attractions, or hotels/rentals with amenities like kitchens or separate sleeping areas. An all-inclusive resort might be easier than navigating multiple restaurants daily with toddlers.
Pace Yourselves: Don't try to cram too much in. Build downtime into your itinerary every day. Kids (and adults!) need time to rest, play freely, and just be. One major activity per day might be plenty.
Book Wisely: If flying, aim for direct flights or routes with manageable layovers. Consider flight times that work with (or least disrupt) nap/sleep schedules. If driving, plan for frequent stops.
2. Pack Like a Pro (Almost!)
Carry-On Essentials: This is your survival kit! Include:
A change of clothes for everyone (spills happen!).
Essential medications (plus pain/fever reducer).
Wipes, wipes, and more wipes.
Snacks and drinks (more on this below).
Diapers/pull-ups if needed.
Small, engaging activities/toys.
Comfort items (lovie, small blanket).
Snack Attack Ready: Pack more snacks than you think you need. Bring familiar favorites and some spill-proof containers. Don't rely solely on finding suitable options on the go. Hydration is key. Bring refillable water bottles.
Entertainment Arsenal: Load tablets with new apps, games, or movies (don't forget kid-sized headphones!). Bring small, mess-free activities: coloring books, stickers, travel-sized games, card games, or wrap a few new small toys for novelty.
Checklists are Your Friend: Avoid last-minute panic by making packing lists for each family member well in advance.
3. Conquer the Journey
Airport Navigation: Allow plenty of extra time. Use family security lines if available. Explain the process to kids beforehand. Consider gate-checking strollers/car seats for convenience.
Car Trip Strategies: Plan stops around parks or playgrounds, not just gas stations. Audiobooks, podcasts, and family playlists can be lifesavers. Pack a small potty for emergencies if potty training. Use window shades.
Embrace the Screens (Strategically): While you might limit screen time at home, travel days are often an exception. Don't feel guilty using screens to buy yourself some peace during transit.
Manage Expectations: Delays happen. Kids get restless. Take deep breaths and try to roll with it.
4. Thrive at the Destination
Maintain Some Routine: While you're on vacation time, sticking loosely to regular nap or bedtimes can prevent overtired meltdowns. A familiar bedtime story or routine can help kids settle in a new place.
Safety First: Talk about staying close in crowded places. Consider ID bracelets or putting your contact info in their pocket. Know local emergency numbers. Pack a basic first-aid kit.
Food Flexibility: Be prepared for picky eating. Try local foods, but have backup options or familiar snacks available. Sometimes, a simple picnic from a local market is easier than a restaurant meal.
Seek Out Kid Fun: Find local playgrounds, parks, or beaches. These allow kids to burn off energy and feel comfortable in a new environment.
5. The Most Important Tip: Adjust Your Mindset
Flexibility is Key: Things will go off script. The restaurant you planned might be closed; the museum might be boring for them, it might rain. Be ready to pivot and find a Plan B (or C!).
Lower Expectations: This isn't the same kind of trip you took pre-kids. You might move slower, see less, and focus more on basic needs. That's okay!
Focus on the Experience: See the world through their eyes. The simple joy they find in a new park, a funny-looking bird, or splashing in the hotel pool is the magic.
Stay Positive (or Fake It!): Kids pick up on your stress. Try maintaining a calm and positive attitude, even when things get challenging. Your energy sets the tone.
Traveling with kids pushes you out of your comfort zone, but the rewards- shared experiences, new perspectives, and incredible memories – are well worth the effort. So pack your bags (and your patience), and get ready for an adventure!

【Go on and Love Me】

୨୧ — ꒰ male!reader | he/his prounouns | Sagau | Genshinimpact
୨୧ — ꒰ Streamer!Reader who gets sidetracked by people's donations/chats making the genshin characters feel jealous
Ft. Xiao, Wanderer, Kinich, Traveler
A/n: inspired by la2yn0va hsr fic

X I A O
(Name) happily smiled at another donation sent to him after recently completing a natlan quest
"Thanks for the 20 bits donation!"
He thanked the chat with a wide smile, the chat which was filled with people commenting every second flooding the entire screen making (Name) shift his focus to answer their questions about himself.
This cute interaction made (Name) feel warm and lovely in the inside, being able to interact with fans who admired him.
You know who wasn't happy? A dark headed male inside a screen wasn't that happy unlike (Name). Why were these people gifting you so low? Most of all why was (Name)'s attention not on him anymore?
He had to pull alot of strings to make his own crit rise up since (Name)'s luck on the Vermilion domain was absolutely dog shit.
(Name) — Hm? My favorite character in genshin?
Xiao — You called?
Xiao unintentionally blurted that out without any thoughts whatsoever, but when he did realize and saw (Name)'s confused face along with the chat going wild.
Without any choice Xiao did his idle animation to hide his face away from you, he used his mask so that Xiao won't face you for a while since he was in a very vulnerable state
(Name) — New mail? Sweet 300 primos!
(Chat) — Fr? I didn't get any new mail from hoyo yet.
(Name) — Well.. Free primos is free primos
If (Name)'s happy then he'll rest easy today. Hopefully no rumors circulate about what happened earlier.. Self aware fanfics are crazy these days.
W A N D E R E R
Wanderer stared at (Name) blankly, he was too busy thanking people with countless of donations to even realize they were still in a boss fight farming material's for upcoming characters.
Wanderer became (Name)'s fan ever since he saw him at that temporary event named 'Unreconciled Stars Event Quest The Crisis Deepens'.
Smug mf since he made (Name) hit hard pity for him. But was kind enough to give you his c1 after 140 wishes
(Chat) — Why don't you change your main (Streamer Name)?
An irk mark appears on Wanderer's face but wasn't that visible on screen.
Is this swine telling (Name) to replace him with someone else? Hard pass. He was already stolen from (Name)'s attention and now these nobody's are trying to persuade him into maining some other weak random than him.
Just so happen that (Name) spotted a chest nearby and happily went over to open it, Wanderer took this opportunity immediately
(Wanderer) — Unnecessary.
(Chat) — Is it just me or is his voice rougher than usual?
Damn right it's rougher since he just wanted to vent his anger out on any enemies on sight
The chat won't know but what he had said was directly targeted at them, if only he could say every insult known to man right now
So (Name), keep your eyes on him only and no one else, then maybe he'll make his attacks stronger if you comply
(Name) — Well to answer your question earlier chat, no I don't think I'll be changing my main anytime soon. Wanderer's pretty fun to play with.
After (Name) finished talking he took a closer look at Wanderer's face, but his eyes swore Wanderer had a tad bit of pink on his cheeks
His eyes must've been starting to break with the amount of streaming his doing
T R A V E L E R
(Name) had just began to prep for his stream of the week and now he was currently adjusting the Traveler's artifacts to try out a new build
You know what's crazy though? His builds are pretty shitty.
He has the absolute worst luck in artifacts plus in leveling up pieces, most of which usually goes to defense or HP%
But he still hits about 800k regularly with the Traveler! How could he do such thing with only 44.6% Crit rate!?
(Chat) — 1 MILLION?? (Name) are you doing hacks?
(Name) — What? No! Guess my Traveler's just really op
The Traveler is a smug motherfucker
Of course the Traveler wouldn't hit such high numbers without using a...slight adjustment to the system
Sure their pieces are pretty bad but they'll accept anything (Name) had given them! How could they just shake off his hard work on griding for their ascension and talents?
Whenever the Traveler sees (Name)'s shocked expression during the massive crit's appearing on his screen they are damn right happy and overjoyed they managed to satisfy their grace!
(Chat) — Your builds are bad af tho lolol
(Chat) — Why main the Traveler? They're a pretty bad character to main, you should go for Nuevillete or Alhaitham.
The Traveler's good mood immediately faded into dust once he saw the chats text
Are those no lifers saying that they're not fit to be (Name)'s vessel? They're the most perfect one!
What could Nuevillete or whatever character have that they don't? Could they switch elements? Don't think so
If they wanted bigger numbers, the Traveler will show them big numbers all right, if you want them to hit 10 million they're gonna make it happen with just one click
(Name) — Thanks for the suggestion chat but I'm going to stick with the Traveler, I'm already wayyy too attached
The Traveler's mood once again took a 360 and smiled softly at what (Name) said to them, their stomachs fluttering with delight
(Name) is attached to them? No other compliment or praise could ever reach what the Traveler was feeling at the very moment
Their grace! Oh their grace... If only they could just grab onto you and drag you here where you rightfully belong
K I N I C H
Kinich is an upcoming playable character but many in the genshin community have fallen head over heels for him
Yet he couldn't careless about them, after all just being near (Name)'s presence even though it's just by the Traveler's vessel already makes him nice and comfortable
(Name) — Day 10 of saving up for Kinich let's goo
(Chat) — Woah already 200 wishes? You're quick man
(Name) — Can't help it lmao, Kinich seems fun to play and he's really pretty!
(Chat) — He seem's boring though
(Chat) — Dude the dialouge is slightly glitching wtf
The dialouge's glitching is caused by Kinich's embarrassment and rage, he was previously just about to talk till he heard (Name) sing praises about him! How could he not accidentally stutter and mess up the dialouge!?
But on the other hand, the hell did that person meant by he was boring? He wasn't even released yet! This caused Kinich to panic mentally if whether or not you'll change your mind about pulling for him
He stared at you from the screen, clenching his fists tighter by the second. Just a small bit more... Just one more step and he'll be released, then he could really be by your side now.
(Name) — Aw man, hold on chat I gotta pause the stream to fix this glitching
(Name) eventually had to exit the game to try and see what the problem was with his device or if it was overheating again
Meanwhile Kinich was still standing there re-adjusting his thoughts about what just happened. His feelings were all a mixed bag at this point, he sighed rubbing his temples slowly
Ajaw eventually came to his side while looking at him weirdly like he had done something wrong
(Ajaw) — Wow.. Just wow
(Kinich) — Shut up...
To rightfully apologized the system eventually sent 10 wishes in (Name)'s game mail which he was confused at first but eh, more wishes for c6 knich!
Once he becomes playable Kinich would definitely spoil (Name) with high numbers and crit's. He would just have to deal with Ajaw's yapping in the meantime..
So don't get distracted over what those 'Chat' people say about him!

A/n: likes and reblogs are appreciated! Have a nice day(ノ´ヮ´)ノ*: ・゚

Alone Together
For the last few years, Tony's daughter has been living out in the tower basement. She doesn't realise when Valentina buys the tower, not until she's being choked out by Sentry (turns out Sentry is a really sweet guy called Bob, who knew?)
Warnings: Slight thunderbolts spoilers
The last few years had been... content.
Everybody thought she disappeared, off the grid once her dad died. Some people tried to look; Happy, Pepper, some guy she was sure she knew but couldn't remember.
They didn't find her, she made sure of that. Wiped her name from every record, lived off of the small fortune her father had left her.
She wasn't a great engineer like her father, didn't spend her time making useful stuff like he did. She still made stuff, it just wasn't useful.
Spare parts, the basement was full of them. Scraps her father disregarded, that he didn't need. She was desperately trying to turn the scraps into something useful, but it wasn’t that easy.
So far, she'd built a computer. Well, she more rebuilt an old computer and used scrap metal to hide the wires. It was one of her proudest accomplishments.
Nobody knew she was in the basement. But it didn’t matter, since the old Avengers Tower had been vacant. If someone bought, she would have known.
(No, she didn't know that the tower had been bought. She didn't know that Valentina was moving in).
All of her details were still in the tower system; it was easy enough to hack into the intercom. She didn't do much with it, isolated it to the basement to play her music while she worked.
It was hard, trying to live up to greatness. It was even harder knowing you'll never be able to achieve it.
Rarely did she travel to other floors. If she did, she would have known about Valentina. If she did, she would have been arrested on the spot.
No daddy to bail her out this time. And Pepper wouldn't bother, she thought.
Maybe if she knew, she would have stayed in the basement, gathered up her things and moved out. She wouldn't have gotten in the elevator to get parts out of the floor. Parts her dad used to make machines to take off the Iron Man suite the second he stepped into the building.
Stepping into the elevator with an empty box in her hand and a screwdriver in her pocket, she pressed the necessary button. The doors slid closed and she began travelling up.
So many floors, but it took no time at all. That was her dad's doing. This entire place was her dad's doing. (Maybe that's why she couldn't leave it behind).
The elevator doors should have slid open to reveal nothing. An empty floor, exactly how the Avengers had left it. The bar her dad left nearly fully stocked before they moved to the compound.
But that wasn't the sight that greeted her.
People in the tower. There shouldn't have been people in the tower. Oh, she had fucked up.
They were mid fight, that much was obvious. The blonde guy in the ridiculous suit held Bucky's fist in his hand like he wasn't fighting a super soldier with a vibranium arm.
But the fight had stopped as everybody in the room stared at her. Goldilocks, discount Steve Rogers, blonde bombshell, soviet santa, mystery person and Bucky.
"You've got to be kidding me."
It was Bucky that said it, pulling his fist out of Goldilock's grip. In the moment of confusion, Goldilocks let him go, his gaze on her.
She resisted the urge to step back into the elevator. "I..." But she couldn't find the words. "What're you doing in my house?"
"Your house?"
She hadn't noticed the woman until now. Dark hair, grey in the front so pretty that it looked silver. Definitely dyed, but it looked good.
"I don't know who the hell you think you are, but I bought this property and you are trespassing."
Her eyes went wide, grip on her empty cardboard box growing tighter. "Oh," she said, the air in the room becoming uncomfortable. But then she furrowed her brows. "Really? Because I've been living here for a while."
The woman's mouth dropped open. "How long- You know what? I don't care." She snapped her fingers. "Sentry."
Suddenly, she was moving through the air. Not of her own volition, she had no sort of power. In less than seconds, she was in front of Goldilocks, his fingers wrapping around her neck.
In her struggle, she gripped his wrist, tried to get out of his grip. But he was impossibly, terrifyingly strong.
There was something in his blue gaze that was soft. Suddenly, he let go of her. Her feet hit the floor and he stepped away from her. "Sorry, I... you don't deserve this," he mumbled.
Her hand found her own neck. He didn't have her in a strong grip, but it still hurt so damn much.
But she couldn't stop staring at him. Sentry. She had no doubt he had the potential to look terrifying, but he didn't in that moment. Regret shined in his blue eyes.
A hand grabbed her, pulling her back. She, along with Bucky, Discount Steve Rogers, Mystery Person, Blonde Bombshell, and Soviet Santa, ran towards the elevator.
They squeezed in and travelled down.
"What the fuck?" Bucky called as he pulled her out of the building. "What the fuck are you doing here?"
She pulled her hand out of Bucky's grip. "I've been living here, Barnes," she called back, shoving her hands into her pockets. The screwdriver still sat there, the cardboard box back in the tower.
"Why aren't you with Pepper?"
A scoff left her lips, sounding more like a child than the adult she actually was. But that was one of the reasons she was in the tower in the first place, because she was sick of everyone treating her like a kid.
She released a breath and looked back towards the tower. "What the hell was that?" She asked, completely changing the subject.
Bucky let her. He didn't have it in himself to argue. But he wasn't going to answer her.
"That was Bob," came a new voice.
Her eyebrows went up. "Bob?"
"Bob."
She swallowed thickly. "What the hell is Bob?"
***
The New Avengers.
The name had her stomach rolling. The world didn't need the Avengers, did it? The only reason they'd needed the New Avengers was Valentina's own doing.
But here they were, in the Avengers - no - Watchtower. Bucky let her stay. He gave her conditions to her stay, but he didn't kick her out, didn't drag her kicking and screaming back to Pepper.
As long as she pulled her weight. As long as she worked, did the necessary repairs when they were needed. Sure, she was nothing like her father, but she had her own skills.
Bob was just Bob. Hair now brown, soft sweaters, books. No more blonde hair, no more shadow monster man (yes, she knew Sentry is more than that, but that was her way of referring to it. That was of referring to it sometimes pulled a smile from Bob).
No super soldier serum, no specialised training, no... whatever Ava was. Sure, he had incredibly strong powers, but they were safely tucked away and Bob was happy.
The two didn't immediately find themselves drawn to each other. She was curious, sure, but Bob didn't remember. He didn't have the answers for her.
But they found themselves left behind during missions. There was nothing wrong with that - how were they supposed to help the team?
The first few times, they kept to themselves. She didn't mind the isolation, that was how she lives when the tower was empty. But she watched Bob. Just what he was doing, how he entertained himself. His life had been full of tragedy, just like hers had been. Individual tragedies, but it made her curious about him.
On the teams third mission, their third time alone in the Watchtower together, she sat beside Bob.
"Whatcha reading?" She asked as she toed off her shoes and tucked her legs beneath her body.
Bob showed her the cover of his book, his finger slipped between the pages.
She patted her thighs, her fingers drumming against her skin. "Is it good?" She asked and Bob gave a nod.
Bob was a quiet guy. She'd learnt this through their limited interactions. But he wasn't usually this quiet. He at least had an answer for her.
So, she kept talking.
"You know, I lived here as a kid," she mumbled, laying back. Everything was different now it was the Watchtower. The bar her father so lovingly put in place was gone (but that was definitely a good thing).
Bob closed his book. "You're Tony Starks kid, right?" Her asked, one leg folded beneath the other, the other hanging off the edge of the sofa.
She gave a nod. "Yeah, grew up around the first round of Avengers," she mumbled.
Turning his head slightly, Bob let his hand rest in his wrist. He'd had a haircut since everything happened, him and Yelena in the bathroom with a pair of scissors. His hair was still a little bit wild, but it suited him.
"Why'd you live in the basement?"
Not the question she was expecting, but she didn't shy away from it. "Spent a lot of time in there as a kid," she answered. "Just felt right being in there."
It was more than that, clearly more than that, but Bob didn't pry.
He stood up. "Hungry?" He asked, watching as her eyebrows went up.
"You cook?" She couldn't help but ask.
Bob went to nod, but he stopped himself. "How hard can it be?" He tried, releasing a breath that suggested he didn't think it was going to be very easy at all.
She pushed herself up from the sofa. "I'll help," she said and went to follow him into the kitchen.
But Bob didn't move. "You cook?" He parroted.
A grin came across her face. "How hard can it be?"
Turns out, pretty fucking hard. Neither of them knew what they were cooking, and that was the first issue. The both of them were just pulling things out of the fridge and trying to decide what to do with it.
Chicken in a pan (plain and neither of them quite knew how to flavour it), spaghetti in boiling water (neither of them knew what to do for sauce), and a garlic bread pizza in the oven (the only promising part of the meal).
Bob pulled salt from the cupboard and seasoned the spaghetti.
"Fuck," she suddenly cried, fridge door open.
Bob raised his head, eyes wide as he looked at her. "What?" He asked, panicking slightly.
"This is John's boring chicken," she said, pushing the fridge door shut. Like she could hide the evidence if she just shut the fridge door.
"Shit," Bob replied as he turned it in the pan (one side finally looked cooked, but both of them knew not to trust it. Just a few more minutes and they'd check the inside).
"He's gonna kill us."
Bob nodded. "We're gonna die."
But then, they laughed. "If John really does try and kill us, you gotta protect me, okay?" She muttered, stirring the spaghetti in the boiling water. "All I got is this." She pulled the screwdriver from her pocket. She was never seen without it now.
"I'll protect you," he assured her, "I'll keep you safe."
Fear of John Walker was a great foundation for a friendship, as it turned out.
part one maybe?

I've been thinking in a Cumplane friendship idea.--
You see, everyone seems to believe SQQ and SQH can't stand each other. Quite the opposite, really. When it's only the two of them they don't feel the need to keep up the pretence. It's so easy to relax, to put the mask aside.
They aren't peak lords nor cultivators. They're just two dudes in their mid tweenties trying to survive in this forsaken world.
SY knows he might not be the kindest nor the most loving of friends, (he spent so many years alone in a cold, hospital room, he's not good at socializing) but he does care for Airplane. A lot. He will never say it out loud because it's embarrasing but that stupid author is his best friend.
So, that's why when the news of Qinghua's disappearance finally reach him (two weeks, it took two full weeks before someone decided to tell him--- )they absolutely destroys him.
He seems calm at fisrt. Not truly procesing the news. LBG makes a few comments about something Mobei told him (you fucking knew and didn't tell me, how dare you, husband?! )
Gone, SQH? No, that's dumb. He couldn't be gone. He's a peak lord, he has responsabilities, a bunch of little ones to teach. He even takes care of the north. And most importantly why would he leave Mobei? It makes no sense, not fucking sense.
SQH wouldn't leave like that. He... he wouldn't leave SY behind.
He can feel sob building up in his throat. That... stupid, idiot--HACK AUTHOR!
His crying fit is so strong and sudden that sends LBG and his whole demon staff into a panic.
"Shizun?!" He says looking for visible injuries-
"Don't touch me!" He screams and LBG looks at him with hurt.
"Husband? Have... have this disciple done something wrong?"
SQQ just turns and walks to his chambers ordering LBG not to follow him. His husband is left feeling distressed and cries for very different reasons.
Later that night they talk. SQQ feeling tired and sad finally calls for his husband to comfort him. He explains to him why he is angry at him and LBG apologizes.
"This one thought you hated Shang-shibo and that Shizun wouldn't care about his dissapereance." He says in a small, careful voice. "Mobei jun came to the palace days ago to beg for help in his search... "
"You turned him away... " SY says, sounding very tired.
"Yes. But this husband will make it right, Shizun. I will find your friend for you, promise."
SY sighs and hugs his husband, hiding his face in his chest.
..
Idk 'm all over the place but the idea is that the system is glitching and took SQH and is kind of keeping him hostage? Like, in between worlds. Not the mordern universe, not PIDW.
I imagine LBG having a very hard time accepting his shizun worries and loves others and not just him (??? why??? I'm more than enough you need NO ONE else shizun). He's too possesive and would like very much just to lock his shizun away, but that would break him and he never wants to see him cry like that ever again. Even if that means he has to share his attention.
MBJ is very broken in this one fiding himself lost without SQH. they had just finally stablished their relationship so he's between angry and scared. Also his trust and loyalty to LBG has taken a blown since he refused to help him find his lover. Didn't he help LBG when everyone turned his back on him as he clinged to his dead shizun's body?
While they work together (before they can even figure out where sqh is) LBG slowly realizes he might have fucked up a bit and ??? misses Mobei ??? are they friends???!!
SY tries his fucking best to keep it together. Really, he loves Binghe but that man can be so dense.
They find where SQH is being kept. The place is like a limbo. Cold, and vast where no time passes. In order to get him back LBG, MBJ and SQQ work together to reforge Xin Mo and travel there. There's a cool fighting montage, tears, hugs and everyone is happy at the end
Yeah that's all i got so far. I'll be going back to work now--

Never did you think you would pack up your entire life just to move across the country for a job. Yet here you are. On a plane going to a state you’ve never been to before to start a job you never thought you’d get. You applied to be the technical analyst for the FBI after being the tech girlie for the LAPD. The job was so far out of reach so when you got the job, you almost shit your pants.
They wanted you to start right away so you had to pack up whatever you could and move out there immediately. For the next few weeks, you’ll be flying back to California to get the rest of your things. There is a cute little apartment you were lucky enough to find, so you were able to get some of your things shipped over there.
During the flight, you try to calm yourself with some relaxing music but your thoughts are too loud to silence. Instead, you take out your laptop and work on some code you’ve been dabbling in for the past few months. You can create a lot of code with your skills, but you decided to focus on hacking and digging in places you shouldn’t be.
Perfect for the FBI.
Two hours pass by while you’re creating a theme for a website when you notice it. Out of the corner of your eye, you see that your shoelace is untied. Your tray is down, your laptop and a snack rest upon it, and your bag is by your feet. It’s a fucking shoelace, Y/N. Ignore it. You try so hard for five minutes before you feel the urge to fix it. Maybe that’s why you’re so good at what you do. You pick at the details until what you’re left with is a pretty picture that’s easy to read.
Fixing your shoe is a need, not a want.
You keep shifting, hoping to get your foot closer to you so that you can tie your shoe, but to no avail.
“Do you need help?” You lift your eyes to look into honey-brown ones. The man on the aisle seat next to you has a kind smile on his face. “I can tie your shoe for you.”
“Why would you do that?” you ask without moving your foot.
The stranger holds up his phone which has a black screen. “My phone died, and I’m quite bored.”
“Okay,” you giggle.
You lift your foot and he rests it on his thigh. His long and nimble fingers grab both ends of your shoelace and start to tie it.
“No one quite knows the first time shoelaces were used to secure shoes. In fact, most reports indicate that shoelaces are as old as shoes themselves. Archaeologists believe that ancient peoples used shoelaces for the same reasons we currently use them, experimenting with materials to influence comfort, fit, and even style.”
“I didn’t know that.”
“Yeah. They think that about five thousand years ago, during the late Neolithic and early Bronze Age periods, cavemen and women also used specific shoelace designs to distinguish between tribes. Most importantly, shoelaces kept early man’s shoes tight and fitted, accommodating their need to travel long distances for food, water, and shelter without causing severe damage to their feet.”
“You just know everything, don’t you?”
“I am a certified genius,” he grins.
“Is that so?”
“Quite. Did you know there are multiple ways to tie your shoe?”
“Please divulge that information,” you smile.
“First, you have the standard tie.” He ties your shoe using the most basic method that every adult knows how to do. “We have the famous ‘Bunny Ears’ way.” He unties your shoe just to tie it again using what children call ‘bunny ears’ since the loops look like ears. “Third, we have the better bow shoelace knot.” It’s like standard but he wraps the shoelace twice around his finger instead of once. “Finally, a classic, the double knot for extra security. See? It’s a success.”
“Who knew there were multiple ways to tie a shoe,” you smile.
“I did, and now so do you.”
“I’m Y/N.”
He smiles and sets your foot down. “Spencer Reid.”
“So, are you flying away from home or toward it?”
“Toward it. I was visiting my mom in Texas for a week. What about you?”
“Toward my new home. I’m from California, but I got a new job in Virginia. I’m kind of nervous about it. I’ve never done anything like it before.”
“What is it?”
“Tech work. I have a masters in computer science. I worked for the LAPD before, but I couldn’t pass up on this offer. I’m kind of nervous, to be honest. I’ve never even stepped foot in Virginia before. I don’t know anyone here.”
“You know me,” Spencer smiles kindly.
“That I do.”
The rest of the flight is smooth sailing once you and Spencer fall into easy conversation. You didn’t even know three hours had passed because he was that easy to talk to. Like the gentleman he is, he walks you to baggage claim and waits for you to get your bag even when he grabs his.
“When do you start your new job?” he asks.
“Monday.”
“I know this might be a bit forward, but I’d love to show you around Virginia if you’re not busy this weekend. I’m sure you have a lot of unpacking to do.”
“Not that much. Like I said before, this was sudden. All my things are still in California. I’ll be moving them in gradually for the next month or so. I can hang out tomorrow if you’d like.”
“It’s a date,” he smiles. His words suddenly register in his head and he starts stuttering and blushing. “Not like a date, date. I meant that I’ll see you tomorrow as in it’s confirmed.”
“Spencer, it’s okay. It can be a date,” you laugh.
“Okay,” he blushes more.
“You’re cute. I have to pick up my rental so I’ll see you tomorrow.”
After exchanging phone numbers, you part ways. Your apartment is thirty minutes from the airport and already has the necessary furniture you had shipped over--bed, couch, dining table, and two chairs. The other things will come when you have time to bring them over. There are a few boxes you had shipped that contain kitchen and bathroom items so you don’t have to go out and buy all new things.
Before, you were nervous about starting this new job. Now, you’re nervous about your date with Spencer. He’s very cute and charming, but you don’t want to mess it up. Even if he isn’t boyfriend material, he definitely has the potential to be a really good friend. Look at you, already thinking about him as a boyfriend. You really are in over your head.
The next day, Spencer picks you up without a car. He likes using public transportation and refuses to even let you drive. You two started out in a cafe to get something to eat before he took you sightseeing around Virginia. There is a beautiful botanical garden here that is his favorite, so that’s where you two are.
“So, genius, have any facts or tidbits about this place?” you ask.
“The idea for this garden came from Thomas P. Thompson, Norfolk City Manager from 1935 to 1938, and Frederic Heutte, a young horticulturalist. Heutte had a fondness for azaleas and thought Hampton Roads had a climate uniquely suited for growing the plants. Thompson and Heutte believed that Norfolk could support an azalea garden to rival those of Charleston, SC, which even during the depression years drew thousands of tourists annually.”
“Wow, you’re just a fountain of knowledge.”
“That’s not all. Within less than a year, a section of underbrush had been cleared and readied for planting. By March of 1939, four thousand azaleas, two thousand rhododendrons, several thousand miscellaneous shrubs and trees, and one hundred bushels of daffodils had been planted.
“In August of 1939, Representative Colgate W. Darden Jr. secured an additional one hundred and thirty-eight thousand, five hundred and fifty-three dollars for the Azalea Garden, and the founding of the Old Dominion Horticultural Society provided volunteer labor to assist the Garden. By 1941, the Garden displayed nearly five thousand azaleas and seventy-five landscaped acres that were encompassed by five miles of walking trails.”
You don’t know Spencer well at all but hearing him spew facts like he has them stored in his brain for later brings a smile to your face.
“Well, they did a good job because this place looks beautiful.”
Spencer looks at you and smiles. “Yeah, it is.”
You and Spencer spend another hour walking around the garden while he tells you facts about the different flowers and plants. Afterward, he takes you to get ice cream before bringing you home. He walks up the porch steps leading to your apartment building, and you stop before you can open the door.
“Would you like to come in? I don’t have a lot of furniture, though.”
“I appreciate the offer, but no.” Before your shoulders can deflate, he quickly adds, “It’s not because I don’t want to. I do, but I want to do this right.”
“Right?” you ask.
Spencer smiles and he leans in closer to you. You stay completely still because you don’t want to mess this up. You don’t want to kiss him if that’s not his intention. He does kiss you but on your cheek. Even when he pulls away, you can still feel the skin he touches tingling.
“Goodnight, Y/N. Good luck on your first day.”
“Thanks,” you whisper.
“I’ll call you tomorrow to see how it’s going.”
With that, Spencer leaves. Thoughts of him swirl around in your head for the rest of the night, are embedded into your dreams, and even when you wake up. Today is the first day of the rest of your life. You get dressed and drive to the BAU where you’ll be working. Their current technical analyst is leaving so she’ll be training you to take her place.
After signing in at the lobby and getting your badge, you make your way to the floor where the BAU is. Penelope Garcia is waiting for you outside of the bullpen, and she smiles when she sees you.
“Y/N, right?”
“Yes, you must be Penelope Garcia, right? It’s nice to meet you. So, you’re leaving the BAU?”
“Yes, sad story. I love this team but I got a better job opportunity to work overseas. However, I trust that you will be more than happy here. I know you’ll do a great job because I picked you, and I’m never wrong. Let me introduce you to Hotch and the team.”
She takes you to Agent Hotchner’s office who is stern but welcoming. “You’ll be shadowing Garcia for a couple of weeks.”
“Yes, sir,” you nod.
“If you need anything, please don’t hesitate to let me know. I’ll leave you in the trusty hands of Garcia.”
“Come on, let’s find the rest of the team.”
You meet JJ, Emily, Tara, Luke, and Matt, all of them friendly and welcoming. The last person on the team is someone you never thought would be here. Spencer turns with a coffee in hand, and his eyes widen when he sees you. Not out of shock, but pleasant surprise.
“Of course, you’d work here,” you chuckle.
“Do you two know each other?”
“Kind of. We met on the plane ride over here, and he showed me around Virginia over the weekend.”
“Look, I understand if you don’t want to see me again outside of being professional.”
Ever the gentleman, Spencer is. “Dr. Reid, are you sad about that?”
“Yes, I am. I like you, and I’d like to see you again.”
A blush creeps up your neck but you try to keep it at bay. “Well, you’re about to see a whole lot of me because I am not going anywhere.” You smirk. “I’ll see you around, Dr. Reid.”
You and Penelope walk off but you turn back and give him a flirty smile. He chuckles to himself and smiles as he takes a sip of his coffee.
“I can already see it. You two will become the next Me and Derek.”
“I have no idea what that means, but I hope it’s a good thing.”
“Oh, it’s a very good thing,” she giggles.
You can’t wait.

Hearthfire Health and Resting Overhaul
Artsource
TLDR: You can solve nearly all problems with D&D's powercurve (and a lot of other problems beside) by limiting the overall hitpoints your party gets, basing it off profficency bonus rather than character level.
If you’ve played anywhere close to as much d&d as I have, you’ll notice the game tends to play best at levels 3-8. Lower than that feels like being trapped in the tutorial, with players denied the majority of their interesting character options and the DM having to use kid gloves or else risking a party wipe. High level play invariably breaks down as player abilities trivialize most encounters, forcing the DM to reach deeper and deeper into the monster roster to provide adequate challenge, making more work for themselves in the process. There’s a definite sweetspot, and like anyone with a head for game design I want to widen that sweetspot to encompass as much of the game as possible.
As is typical of someone who’s into game design; I’ve bit off more than I can chew, deciding to build several interlocking rules changes/subsystems that I think will help me make the game function more like I want it to. This isn’t going to be for everyone, but if you’re feeling the need for a rules lite overhaul to rebalance how you plan encounters/ the rigours of adventure, this might be for you.
Here’s the overhaul in short form:
Character HP is determined as (Max Class HD + Con modifier) X proficiency bonus. This means they keep the same Max HP throughout the tier (1-4, 5-8 etc)
This means that low CR enemies stay relevant for far longer, making encounter building more reasonable. Likewise this prevents mid/high CR enemies from being trivialized. It allows you as the DM deploy mundane threats ( a steep drop, a detachment of city guards, the threat of a building catching fire) as legitimate challenges well into the later chapters of the campaign.
Temporary HP can be gained from using improved provision consumables (including those harvested from monsters), or by resting at inns and better establishments in town. A hardy, homecooked meal gives the party the strength they need to take on greater challenges, far more than a diet of salt pork & hardtack. In rare cases permanent HP boosting items can be sought as treasure.
Long resting in the wilderness is more difficult, requiring the party to find a safe campsite and spend provisions. Making sure they don't burn through these finite resources before encountering the real challenge makes for a great resource management challenge to go along with exploration based gameplay, acting as an informal ticking clock.
First, A small Testimonial: I've now tried this system with four different groups, and while there's still some bugs to work out I can say it feels a lot closer to my ideal form of d&d than the baseline rules. Planning combats is SO EASY, and I can actually scare my players with big monsters again. I've dropped the weird XP calculation and I can now use the group's level as a budget for medium-challenge combat encounters. Lower HP totals on both sides keep fights fast and punchy, which means I can fit more of them into a session, getting more progress through a gauntlet of challenges. While considering implmenting this system, I also encourage you to take a look at some of my combat hacks, which help to supplement fights the same way this system is meant to supplement exploration.
PROVISIONS: In order to get the benefits of a long rest while travelling you need 1) A place to set up camp that's not exposed to the elements 2) To spend a use of your provisions
Rather than beancounting individual servings per person, provisions are tracked through "The provision die", an abstract representation of what your party has left to eat that ranges from a d4 to a d20. This works off a depletion die system, meaning that every time provisions are used (generally once per night) you roll the die, and if it's a 1 or 2 it shrinks a size category. If it shrinks while it's a d4 the party is officially out of supplies and starts taking levels of exhaustion.
The base price or provisions is 5gp for a d4 depletion die, larger sizes of die may be bought based off the linked chart.
Alternatively, provisions (of an enhanced rarity even) may be salvaged from a monster, dungeon meshi style.
Without the extra carrying capacity from a bag of holding or wagon, the party's provision die is limited to a D6. Going offroad is tough, requiring characters to live off the land.
Living off the land generally requires a survival check with a DC based on how verdant the area is. Failure can mean a lack of finding anything suitable, or a delay in trying to acquire necessary provisions.
Features that can keep people fed like the outlander background or goodberry spell prevent the exhaustion buildup but still do not allow a long rest.
If ever the party is traveling for a week or more between settlements, their provision die drops by one size, regardless of how many times in the week they've rolled.
A party can buy better rations (consumable) or improve their camp gear (permanant) in order to gain temporary hitpoints when they consume provisions. A common upgrade will get you 2 class HD in temporary hitpoints, an uncommon will get you 4, a rare upgrade will get you 6. Enchanted camp gear (such as high quality tents, enchanted cookwear, rare spices) may also grant other bonuses when provisions are consumed, such as resistance to weather effects, bonuses to saves against fear, or even inspiration.
HAVENS: If the party is sticking in one place for a while it's likely that they'll be doing so in a Haven such as a tavern, outpost, or perhaps even their own bastion. Havens are rated on the same rarity system as camp upgrades and provisions are, which determines their overall level of quality and the amount of temporary HP they bestow per night.
As a guideline, if the party has to pay to stay in a haven, it costs 1sp per person per night for common accommodations, with the associated rarity price jump: (5 silver for uncommon, 5 gold for rare). Many inns have varying levels of accomidation, so some party members might chose to spring for greater amounts.

HII EMMA, I just wanted to tell you that you’re one of my favorite users on tumblr if not my favorite. Anyway I’ve seen you did the Ancient Rome script and I LOVED it. So can you do an Ancient Egypt script too if you can? I’m shifting to the prince of Egypt 🫶🏻 THANK YOUU
the ultimate guide to surviving ancient egypt.
time traveller, welcome !!!! you stand at the threshold of one of history’s most opulent and mysterious civilisations.....ancient egypt. a land of towering pyramids, sacred temples, and a society so deeply entwined with its gods that the line between mortal and divine blurs. my name is emma, and if you want to not only survive but thrive in this world of pharaohs, priests, and scribes, you’re going to need more than just blind luck.
forget everything you know about modern convenience. no running water, no wifi, no google maps. you’re stepping into a civilisation that has perfected the art of both grandeur and survival for over three millennia.
⊹ ︶︶ ୨୧ ︶︶ ⊹
◞ social structure & blending in.
ancient egypt is a hierarchical society where social class dictates everything from your clothing to your access to temples. the nobility, scribes, and priests hold power, while farmers and labourers form the backbone of the economy. if you’re aiming for survival, either blend into the upper class or adopt the disguise of a scribe. education is a key social elevator. if you want the easy route, have a compelling backstory as a foreign noble, or forge a connection with the priesthood.
◞ titles && status to guide yourself by.
pharaoh : literally a god on earth. don’t offend them. nobles and officials : control administration and land. dress richly, act poised. scribes : literate and valuable. learning hieroglyphs can get you into many doors. priests : have spiritual and often political power. great connections. artisans and merchants : middle-class but respected for their work. farmers and labourers : the vast majority. hard lives, heavy taxes. slaves and servants : often war captives. zero autonomy.
◞ hygiene & beauty (aka, avoiding disease and smelling like a deity).
ancient egyptians take hygiene seriously, and you should too. disease is rampant, and being clean is not just about vanity. it’s survival. essentials included. . .
bathing : daily cleansing is a MUST. use natron (a natural salt) as soap. perfumes and oils : frankincense, myrrh, and lotus oil are status symbols AND practical (they mask body odour and deter lice). shaving : egyptians detest body hair. use bronze razors or depilatory creams. makeup : kohl-lined eyes prevent glare from the sun and have antibacterial properties. linen clothing : light and breathable, keeps you cool. wigs (yes !) : essential for elites, they are perfumed and keep bugs away.
◞ food & drink.
avoid starving by sticking to a staple egyptian diet. if you’re noble, enjoy lavish banquets. If not, stick to the essentials. do not drink nile water unless you like parasitic infections. beer and wine are safe bets.
bread and beer : the foundation of all meals. fruits and vegetables : dates, figs, onions, leeks, and cucumbers. meat and fish : nobles get beef and poultry; commoners rely on fish. dairy : milk, cheese, and butter are common. honey and spices : used for sweets and preserving food.
◞ shelter & lodging.
if you’re noble, you’ll have a house made of mudbrick with courtyards and pools. If not, simple mudbrick homes with few rooms. temples often provide lodging for scribes and priests. good for you, i have some travel hacks.
temples and inns : often have food and shelter for travellers. avoid the desert at night : sandstorms, bandits, and jackals. use the nile : boats are the best mode of transport.
◞ safety & warfare (aka, don’t get killed).
egypt is relatively stable, but internal power struggles and invasions happen. your best bet is to keep a low profile and don’t offend priests or the pharaoh. if caught in a legal dispute, bribe a scribe to doctor the records. justice favours the literate and well-connected. albeit, try to avoid these dangers. . .
crime : thieves lurk in busy markets. military drafts : if war happens, you might get recruited. wild animals : crocodiles, hippos, and scorpions. avoid them. the afterlife obsession : mummies and tomb curses.....real concerns.
◞ money & shopping.
egyptians use a barter system, but weights of silver and gold serve as currency. markets are your go-to for essentials. sadly there weren't any designers. alas, here's where to shop . . .
the marketplace : everything from linen to cosmetics. the temple storehouses : goods from taxes and offerings. workshops : best for tailored clothing and crafted goods.
◞ entertainment & leisure.
nobles feast, play senet (a board game), and attend religious festivals. music, dance, and poetry are popular.
things to try . . . attend a festival : great for networking. visit a temple library : read and gain knowledge. watch a hunt : nobles hunt hippos and lions for sport.
things to avoid. . . speaking ill of the gods : instant execution. the wrong political alliances : power shifts quickly. tomb robbery : even thinking about it gets you cursed.
anyways. ancient egypt is luxurious yet dangerous. stay smart, stay clean, and stay in the good graces of the gods (or at least the priests). now go forth, time traveller, and may ma’at (balance and order) guide your journey.

Phi. Not BL related. You have hacks to avoid pickpocketers? Please share if you are willin.
Oh sure, just quick ones off the top of my head
Tips to Avoid Pickpockets and Thieves
from someone who is always travelling
I'm not gonna go over the usuals (just google), but I do have some esoteric approaches.
Research the specific pickpocketing (and related scams) in the city you're visiting. I like YouTube for this. Each city has its own little quirks of evil. I like to know what specifically I'm keeping an eye out for. (Like those damn clowns in Barcelona, shudder.)
I prefer sports gear over stuff designed for travel. I find it's more comfortable and stylish, less expensive (and easy to thrift for). So I don't wear a money belt but I do have one of these belts designed for runners which works the same way. Bonus it also makes for a pretty cool actual belt and you can use it to strap your luggage in a pinch.
I don't have any special all weather travel gear with tons of pockets and zippers etc... but I do like a golf jacket or vest. They usually have a nice inner pocket and fun other bells and whistles.
Strong large safety pins are great. You can use them to pin your wallet to you (if you don't do the chain thing), or a pouch (with spare cash and card, or your passport etc...) to inside your pants or undergarments. You can also use them to pin pockets closed (that don't have zippers) for extra safety.
By wallet I mean this kind of thing, more versatile, rfid and fits into the aforementioned belt.
I will literally sew inside pockets into things I like to wear for travel that don't have them already. Sometimes I will sew in a canvas pouch with a zipper top. 'Caus I fancy!
I travel with 2 credit cards, about $200 cash in the local currency (1 card and 1/2 cash sashed separately different places), and no ATM card.
I have a laminated 3x5 card of all the necessary info in case my phone or credit cards get stolen as well as emergency phone numbers. This info lives in my toiletry bag. I know, but no one thinks to look there and it stays back in my hotel most of the time.
Purse - if you insist on a purse go for something cheap, outrageous, hard sided, and with a loud closure like large snaps or a click. Outrageous because then everyone is looking at it all the time, so it's hard to snake it away, loud so you can hear it opening. Also I would say don't carry your wallet in that purse, but elsewhere on your person, say the belt or inside pocket? Purses are for, oh I don't know, lip gloss? Bandaids?
Backpack - ditto no wallet in it, but actually I always go for a crossbody instead of a backpack. Backpacks are the worst. I loathe them.
Crossbody - if you're waring a jacket wear the jacket over the strap (and bag, if you can) for goodness sake! I love a cape or a poncho in rain for these exact reasons. Yes I said cape, I'm a superhero.
Don't LOOK like a damn tourist, for the LOVE. I know everyone says this, but I mean - do the fashion research. I like to look up on YouTube those street camera "walking a shopping district" things for the destination city and time of year I'll be there. Then I actually pack planning to dress like a locals. Specifically color preferences, outerwear, and shoes. CLEAN shoes.
More on this: did you know people in Scandinavian countries rarely wear sunglasses? Mediterranean countries = no hats. Most Southeast Asian countries hate a backpack (yay!). I have no idea why, this just is.
Four signs you are a target tourist: 1. backpack, 2. fleece, 3 sensible shoes, 4. a baseball cap.
Don't keep your valuables in fancy pretty cases. I have a fancypants iPad, it travels in a manilla envelope. Why? No one wants to steal my damn mail. My laptop has the same thing, only made of faux leather so it only looks like an envelope from a distance, but still works for my needs.
I'm rarely out and about in danger zones with my work laptop. If I have to, I will wear one of those cheep slim not-backpacks (I KNOW) underneath my jacket with my computer flat against my back, you know the ones where the straps are string? It's very innocuous.
Stock up on cheap zipper pouches: I carry a lot of my other expensive tech in things like cheep makeup pouches (they're water resistant and often padded, ideal for tech). I'm a sucker for stupid looking but secretly well made baggies, easy pick-ups at a thrift store. And since they are miss-matched i always know which ones hold what.
Okay, hopefully that was helpful!
#Tips to Avoid Pickpockets and Thieves#I am in a hotel more than I am at home#yes I really do travel all the time all over the world#yes I enjoy it but it is also work
