Generation vs Generation! ⚡️ For LGBTQ+ History Month, we asked our It Gets Better Youth Voices and Outwords Archive storytellers the same questions, so we could see how their answers change (or remain the same) as our LGBTQ+ history evolves!
We matched up Youth Voice Eli, a trans activist, artist, and student filmmaker, with Jude, a trans activist, therapist, and sex educator who made headlines as one of the first trans men to receive gender-affirming surgery in 1972!
🟣 Do you have a favorite LGBTQ+ film? What is it and why?
Eli: "Oh I have so many! But the first two that come to mind are Portrait Of A Lady On Fire by Celine Sciamma and Milk by Gus Van Sant."
Jude: "I could not choose just one! My favorite LGBTQ+ films are Some Like it Hot; Victor, Victoria; Tootsie; Mrs. Doubtfire; The Naked Civil Servant; and Yentl."
🟣 What LGBTQ+ landmark would you most like to visit and why?
Eli: "I would like to visit the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village, New York. It’s such an important landmark and sort of the birthplace of the more modern LGBTQ+ rights movement."
Jude: "The Stonewall Inn. I am very happy that it was made a National Landmark. It represents a pivotal time in our LGBTQ+ history. I am very aware that Stonewall was NOT the first such event important to our history. I hope that eventually other such sites will be recognized/honored."
🟣 Which of the Pride flags do you feel best represents you and why?
Eli: "I like the progress pride flag, because it has both the trans flag and the rainbow pride flag. And it's a reminder that as a community we are always moving forward and changing."
Jude: "I like the transgender pink/white/light blue flag because it best represents me as a trans man. But I also like the newer, most inclusive of Pride Flags because I consider myself as part of the larger LGBTQ+ community."
🟣 What’s one fact about the LGBTQ+ community that you think everyone should know?
Eli: "There are so many different kinds of people and identities within the community. We all deserve to be treated with respect and to live a happy life identifying however we choose."
Jude: "We are here, all around you. We have existed since the beginning of time, in every culture. We are every bit as valuable and as worthy of respect, equal human rights, and pursuit of happiness. I do not want your 'acceptance. I do not want your 'tolerance'. I want you to join me in celebrating me and other LGBTQ+ folks as we truly are!"
We'll have more matches for ya throughout Oct!

thinking about how the extra area added on to a pacifist run of undertale, the true lab, is about alphys's past mistakes. how it ends with the story reaffirming that, despite the pain she's caused, the thing that matters is that she has now made the choice to do the right thing. she's still worthy of her friends' love.
thinking about how undertale doesn't expect the player to get a pacifist ending for the first time. how it's more likely than not that the player will kill toriel the first time they battle her, how lots of players don't initially figure out how to end undyne's fight without killing her, etc. what it expects — not even expects, really, but hopes — is that the player, if they care enough, will use their canonically acknowledged power over time to make up for those mistakes.
no matter how many neutral runs a player has done before committing to the pacifist run, the thing that matters to the characters, to the story, is that you've chosen, now, to do the right thing.
compared to alphys, the player honestly gets off lightly, in that you're the only one (other than flowey) who really remembers any harm you might have caused. and any direct guilting the game could have done about it is long past at this point. instead, as undertale often does, it makes its point via parallels: alphys caused harm, and she knows it. she has committed to being better. in doing so, she has unlocked for herself a better ending to her story. and she deserves it. she's forgiven.
those structural narrative parallels are all over undertale, if you know where to look. and that's one of the things that makes it so fuckin' good.

as well as being incredibly misogynistic and demeaning, "catfight" just isn't an accurate term for what's being described most of the time. if you refer to two women fighting as a "catfight" i'd better see them growling at each other with blood under their nails and deep jagged scratches carved into their skin where they tried to disembowel each other with their bare hands. they'd better be tearing out chunks of each other's flesh with their bloodstained teeth and trying to gouge each other's eyes out. if you're going to be a sexist loser you can at least do us real sicknasty perverts the favour of not half-assing it.

Saw a post where someone wasn't sure if Tim being good at computers was a fanon thing or not and friend I am happy to inform you that he's been a computer/tech guy from some of his earliest appearances in the comics.
Tumblr media
Detective Comics (Vol. 1) #620 (Rite of Passage part 4) - immersed in the ~web~
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Robin II: The Joker's Wild #3 - tabletop roleplaying games and spending hours in the basement on the computer - not beating the geek allegations on these fronts, Timmy
Tumblr media
Detective Comics (Vol. 1) #676 - Dick was more into traditional detective work and tended to outsource the computer stuff in these days
Tumblr media
Batman (Vol. 1) #514 (Prodigal part 10) - hackin' through all the garbage and garble
Tumblr media
Robin (1993) #33 - Robin sneaking in and connecting Oracle with the baddies' mainframe so she can do her thing and steal all their data >:)
Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) #6 - "no you're really talented and well suited to be Robin." "no, you." "no, YOU!"
Tim is definitely not as good as Babs/Oracle, but he's certainly her back-up for computer work in the 90's batfam. They're tech buddies and Robin!Tim is her little assistant sometimes, it's super cute:
Tumblr media
Birds of Prey (1999) #19 - happy to play with big sister's fancy high-powered toys
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Legends of the Dark Knight (1989) #125 - real cute kid
And Dick will hand off computer jobs to his little brother when he doesn't want to bother Babs 😂 (that outsourcing I mentioned):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Nightwing (1996) #68 - examine them pixel by pixel, eh? welp, sounds like a job only you can do, Timbo, you got this buddy, byyyyeeeee
And then when he'd grown up and been doing this for years, he leveled up accordingly, and did stuff like use his access to the League of Assassins computers to overload the generators in every base he could find, etc. etc.
Tumblr media
Red Robin (2009) #8 - yeah that was pretty dumb of you Ra's :)
So yeah, it was a bit of a specialty of Tim's, in large part because he was introduced just at the turn into the 90's, when personal computers were really starting to take off and become widespread. (Robins gotta be cutting edge and all)
Of course, by no means does it follow that the other Bats suck at computers (there is no 'smart one' they are all incredibly smart and capable). This is especially true as reboots and the sliding timescale of comics have moved the DC characters into modern times, where computers run the world and everyone grows up with one in their pocket. The baseline familiarity and expertise that everyone can be expected to have is just much, much higher these days.
It gets exaggerated in fanon as all character traits do, but computer guy Tim is definitely not something just made up out of whole cloth :)b

and i want them to never actually contribute to the plot. it just happens. kaz puts his cane on top of the darklings cape and he trips. thats the whole fight.

maybe my number one stranger things pet peeve is when people write max mayfield like she’s an asshole who hates her friends (especially mike) as if her love for and memories of her friends did not give her the strength to realize she wanted to live. as if her love for her friends didn’t literally save her life.

I wanted to thank you for hugging me when we witnessed Mr. Shin's death. Oh, that? It's fine. For people with autism— Anxiety can be relieved if pressure is put on the body during sensory overload, right? Yes… Yes, that's right.
