Ned Stark: If you got injured it would most likely be from falling off your horse during a casual ride. As the doting husband he is he would be rushing to your side and calling maesters to check on you. With only a small bruise to show for you try to get back on the horse but Ned doesn't allow it. He doesn't mean to control you, he only wants to keep you safe from any more serious injuries that won't heal as easy as a bruise.

Robb Stark: With Robb, he normally has guards with you at all times because he worries for your safety. When one of them turns out to be a spy with intent to hurt you, Robb is livid. You were pushed and left with a few bruises but all he sees is red. Robb sentences the man to die and takes his head for it. He spends the rest of the day with you in bed, feeling guilty while he looks at your injuries. You'll definitely want to console him cause he will cry, especially thinking of what COULD have happened to you.

Jon Snow: He truly believes in your ability to take care of yourself, but when you get hurt during a fight he rushes to your side without second thought. You'll both have to fight your way out of the conflict but once you're safe he checks on your wounds. He asks for a maester to check them out to keep out infection and feels a little useless not being able to do anything himself. Jon makes it a point to joke about it to take away the serious energy going on and promises to always have your back.

Sansa Stark: Girly is straight up crying. Doesn't matter if it was just a little accident or you were roughed up by some thugs, younger Sansa is a crier. When she finds you she's holding onto you with strength you didn't know she had. Unlike older Sansa who would be ready to pass someone's death sentence, younger Sansa only cares about you feeling better. She does her best to make you a prayer wheel like her mother does for her.

Margaery Tyrell: She'd be a lot more calm than you'd think, at least around others. Once she sees you lying in bed with your leg elevated, she's questioning the hell out of you. What happened? Who was it? Do you need anything? Milk of the Poppy? It's almost entertaining to see how much she worries in contrast to her usual cool attitude. After you assure her that you're alright she's cuddling up in bed with you, probably to read something to you.

Theon Greyjoy: Pre!Reek Theon would instantly be at arms and ready to fight whoever touched you. He's possessive and the thought of ANYONE touching you pisses him off but especially if they meant to harm you. He wouldn't know how to express his worry for you so he'd just angrily stand by you as you recover. Post!Reek Theon is deeply insecure and guilty about you getting hurt. He still wants to fight whoever hurt you but he's more concerned with making sure you're okay.

Khal Drogo: *Activate instant death mode* I mean we saw what happened when Daenerys almost got poisoned, think about actually getting poisoned. Having to lay in bed for days while Drogo goes out in search for whoever did this to you. It doesn't matter why they did it or if you die or not, all that matters to him is giving them the most painful death possible. When he's done, he sits at your bedside knowing you are strong and capable of overcoming this.

Brienne of Tarth: It was only a training accident but your messed up ankle reminded Brienne how fragile you were. She was born and raised to endure the pain that came with being a knight/fighting, but you never asked for it. She'll feel upset at herself for not teaching you properly and it'll come off as anger towards you. Truly she doesn't mean it but if being hard on you will keep you safe next time then she knows what she has to do.

Missandei: Tearsss. She's crying before she even knows what happened to you. Stays by your bedside as you heal from a battle wound and takes responsibility for changing your dressings and cleaning the injury. Missandei knows that this is the life you've chosen to live, but sometimes she wishes she could take you away to her homeland safe from any harm.

Opinion: With the exception of the youngest, the Bridgerton brothers are hard to tell apart in looks and actions. (Explanatory ramble: Until season 3, I wouldn't have been able to tell you who Colin was and still couldn't in some scenes. They (I forget their names & how many there are) often felt like the same non-serious man with no cares in the world, only drinking and "canoodling." Mind you, I only saw each season when it came out and only the once. *shrug* I don't hate the show, and realize that I should probably do a full rewatch.)

No. I... no. I will not tolerate you slandering Colin Bridgerton that way. I will not!

I will preface this by saying - there's nothing wrong with watching the pretty people in regency clothes story and not care that deeply about it. Most people do and that's fine. And all the men on the show fulfill the romantic hero role since the show is, after all, an anthology romance collection.

But. You should know me by now, and here you are showing up in my in box with such blasphemy, I just have to defend Colin. The following diatribe should be expected...

(you do know I'm being facetious, right? right... okay!)

The whole point, the WHOLE POINT of Colin's character arc is that he's the opposite of what you describe. If you go back to seasons 1 and 2, Colin is someone who cares very deeply about people -- almost to a fault. He has some insecurity issues (undoubtedly because he's the third male child) and a hero complex (what is he if he can't /save/ someone? what is he if he can't help out in some way).

He's actually incredibly sweet and kind. And worldly. And empathetic. And sensitive. The opposite of his brothers and the opposite of what society expects from him.

And then got ridiculed for it.

And so he decided, while traveling the world (for much longer meta reasons then I should probably get into here) that he'd stop going against the grain and just be who everyone expects him to be. What you said above.

And it doesn't work.

Both Colin and Pen have these mirroring arcs (my god, don't let me get into the mirror iconography or I'll never shut up) where they can't cut off who they are to appease everyone around them. Colin's journal entry essentially says that he's not finding real intimacy. He's already known what actual intimacy is -- maybe not physically, but emotionally, he has. And he's both missing it and searching for it (because he doesn't know that the /it/ is his relationship with Pen.)

He imitates his brothers and his 'friends' because he feels like that's what he's supposed to do. But really, he's a softy who just wants to cuddle up with someone he loves and drown in her.

The thing that I really, really, really didn't expect from the pretty people in regency clothing show is that there's a lot of nuance to the story telling that can be easily missed. and I'm more impressed with it than I ever thought I should be.

Anyway... I could write more, but it's past midnight and I really should go to bed soon... the tl:dr version is that Colin has a really cool story arc in all three seasons and it's much more interesting than surface level would lead you to believe. <3

Okay, I've been thinking about this all morning, so follow up to my last post with a lot more depth.

What if Orange isn't a side? I like the idea of orange being representative of ADHD, and I think it would be cool to see ADHD explored in Sanders Sides. It's certainly a more interesting idea than the orange side being rage or wrath.

My only problem with it, is I think that ADHD is too all encompassing to be a side. In my experience, it impacts everything. And you can see bits of it in all the sides, if you look for it. Patton is very impulsive, especially when it comes to spending money, and he feels things very, very deeply and intensely, like someone with ADHD would. Roman creates and creates, but he is insecure about it. He wears a mask of false confidence and personability, while deep down probably being the most self-conscious of them all. Virgil's anxiety over disappointing friends, forgetting things, making Thomas check and recheck, points to the type of anxiety someone who has a history of forgetting things would develop over time. The self-preservation of Janus, the lies to cover the obligations you forgot, or that you just couldn't do, the fear of being rejected or not understood if you tell the truth. Remus can be connected to an overactive mind that just won't stop racing through different thoughts and ideas.

If ADHD is a side, that's a very powerful side that has a LOT of control over the others. Which does track with Logan's eyes turning orange, I suppose. But what if, instead, orange remains a specter? Only seen in Logan's eyes or in the light over the stairs behind Virgil, hanging over them all. Not a side, not something to be reasoned with, but an unseen force. Something that can twist any side to its will--making Logan angry, making Roman insecure, making Virgil paranoid, making Patton impulsive, etc.

And that's why these hints have been cropping up in videos for so long with no actual orange side showing up.

why do i, personally, think he said it? aside from being hurt? i sort of have a very nebulous idea of it that i noticed on a rewatch (yes i will rewatch this season consistently, it's now my among my favorite comfort tv shows along with 2005's p&p (which is a movie i know), that one season of friends, that flea market show i hate (don't ask), and the entirety of bob's burgers) but colin has no idea penelope loves him until episode 6 so it's connected to that.

i am very sorry you were brave enough to ask me a question and now have to read all the nonsense below. god speed.

like, he's flying blind and after the carriage (insert pitbull music...and fingers here) he's pretty insecure that's he's moving a lot faster than she is. it's unsettling to be head over ass in love and feel like you're not worthy of it and then not even be sure where the other person is. that penelope doesn't reciprocate when he first says it to her is noticeable but he moves on so quickly you can sort of assume he doesn't want to give her a chance to, like he's scared of the answer if he asks.

colin waxes poetic about love, about penelope, etc all through eps 5 and 6. he's consumed by it and to be fair, they were on different wavelengths in part 1. she was trying to let him go and move past him and he was stumbling and staring and wanting to die with wanting her while she was like, "hey this guy you hate for no reason likes me, isn't that cool?" and it's pretty fresh for him so i would think something like that lingers.

when she tells him she loves him in ep 6, he's happy. and relieved. i also think he's been expecting bad news (which, you know. it, uh, will be later) so it's a relief to hear that they're on the same page but, and this stuck out to me the first time i heard it, she says she loved him while pretending to be his friend. she corrects herself because of course she was actually his friend but she loved him underneath of it all as well but penelope isn't always the best with words when on the spot and it takes her a moment to calm down and gather her thoughts. the relief (and guilt of him not knowing/reciprocating) is very obvious in the moment and i think he was thrilled to hear that she loved him back.

which leads us to the LW fight. which makes him question if he ever knew her at all. he does, of course he does, but she's been this secret second person who has written about him, his family, her best friend, and her own family for years. penelope's intentions are never malicious when it comes to protecting the people she loves but the execution can leave a fair bit to be desired. she doesn't lie but she isn't always kind, either.

so you have this man beyond in love with a woman he doesn't think he can trust who just admitted she'd loved him for years. it's easy to live in that hurt and anger and assume the worst of someone when they've just betrayed your trust so deeply. it would probably be easy to feel manipulated. i don't think him questioning her motives is beyond the realm of possibility but i do think penelope is better than me because if i get accused of something i didn't do i would act up something fierce (see this is why my husband had to marry me, he had to keep me from terrorizing the rest of the population with my dramatics. a hero of our times, really).

anyways, what i mean is, i think it's easy to ignore the lead up to that betrayal as an audience since we know penelope's anguish and hurt over what she's done but colin has no idea and it's very fresh for him so it's easy to lash out and think everything had a motive. penelope as LW is very calculating and pointed. i think it's smart of her, actually, to continually tell him she loves him and not constantly poke at the argument. she's not giving him anything else to hold up and use against her after the fact. she's very frank and open even when they have their argument in the street.

this idea he has of LW is this hurtful, manipulative person playing with people's lives. like, LW would entrap him but penelope wouldn't so it's easy to hate one and love the other and i think his inability to bring them together as one person could play into that dynamic of feeling insecure of what her intentions were. you can sort of see each time he breaks because he knows penelope loves him but he steps back each time he's reminded of LW and how it comes between them.

something i also think plays out in his inability to communicate effectively and how deeply his self-loathing goes into his jealousy of her success and how he's incapable of being intimate with penelope until he's in a better headspace. he loves penelope. he wants to marry her and be with her and live a life with her but there's a 3rd person in his marriage in his mind and what does one do with all of that when you're so firmly penelope-sexual you're staring at the walls in a brothel when you're still single? idk man.

Truly, I think there is a valid and also extra fun reading of Saltburn in which a good chunk of Oliver's fumbling of Felix was down to an early misreading of one of Felix's core personality traits.

That what Oliver read as Felix having a massive savior kink was actually more of Felix having a, "Growing up with Elspeth for a mother and playing witness to her rotating cast of poor dear friends in my formative years instilled within me a deepseated insecurity over the complete lack of interestingly Traumatic Events that I have experienced due to the wealth and privilege I was born with, coupled with an inability to look directly at or acknowledge that wealth and privilege because that would be, like, Bad?? maybe?? so instead of examing or dealing with this deepseated insecurity in any healthy way, I turned it into a weirdly intense and equally unexamined association with 'Struggles and Trauma = How to be Cool'," kink.

Evidence for this theory includes: -Felix delightedly telling all his friends the story of how his bike got a flat tire and he had to be Dramatically Rescued by an Intriguing Stranger! One slightly bad thing happened to that boy and he was so eager for it that he was telling everyone he knew at the first and also probably every opportunity for days -Felix responding to Oliver's early lies with things like, "You're really brave," and, "Seriously, you're a fucking inspiration, mate" -"What did they teach you in boarding school?" followed by Felix, listing off a few non-answers before staring deeply into Oliver's eyes and smacking a hand on Oliver's inner thigh before finishing with, "annnd... child abuse." -Felix seeming genuinely baffled by Annabell's assertion that none of her friends would want to sit next to Oliver at a dinner party, because... of course Oliver is interesting??? Oliver has Trauma! What do you mean his Traumatic Backstory makes him less interesting, this literally does not compute?? -The one thing that makes him instantly ditch Oliver, on the other hand, being Oliver calling him out as rich and spoiled while calling his room disgusting, which happens on the same day that he ditches Annabell, aka that girl with the baffling and nonsensical opinion that Being Rich is, like, more interesting that Having Trauma?? -Felix being a Harry Potter fan? Allows him to both appear totally normal because everyone loves Harry Potter, while also publically indulging his guilty little daydreams about how cool he could have been if he'd been a sad little orphan with a Tragic Backstory, but one who also got to still be wealthy and important via inheriting huge amounts of money from his dead parents and being the prophesized savior of the world -Felix sharing his family's rock throwing tradition but needing to awkwardly include that he's only ever done it for his dog = simultaneously a trigger for all his insecurities over his own lack of interesting Trauma but also an opportunity to live vicariously through Oliver's much more interesting Trauma -Felix being furious and deeply betrayed by Oliver, while also deciding that he couldn't possibly kick Oliver out before his birthday party, as the idea that literally no one at all except him and maybe Elspeth would have even noticed if Oliver was completely absent from his own birthday party does not even cross his mind, because he's the only one who knows that Oliver doesn't have interesting Trauma actually

And anyways, I like to imagine that half of this Felix's issues with the discovery that Oliver was lying was over the fact that it required him to grapple with the incomprehensible idea that Oliver did not, in fact, have much in the way of Interesting Trauma in his life either, apparently, but he'd still convinced not just Felix, but Elspeth that he was Interesting anyway?

And Felix's brain was neither prepared nor remotely equipped to process this idea in any way whatsoever besides just running away, sticking his fingers in ears, and going, "LA LA LA I CAN'T HEAR YOU," until the uncomfortable thoughts and also Oliver went away so he could get on with turning The Oliver Situation into his first real interesting Trauma that was already over and thus cool now, instead of still there and making it deeply and unpleasantly obvious that maybe traumatic events were actually just, like, really terrible things to live through while they were still happening, in fact???

In addition to the walking stuff in the last episode of my personal weatherman, I was rewatching the earlier episodes today and paying more attention to the scenes rather than the subtitles (it's so easy to miss stuff when you have to read lol) and it really struck me how many little moments there are that show how much Segasaki cares and loves Yoh and how easily Yoh either doesn't notice or misinterprets Segasaki's actions because, like you said, he needs those words. Obviously it's also because they're in a non conventional relationship dynamic that requires communication where there is very little but I think this last episode showed that even before they entered this relationship, Yoh was thrown off by Segasaki bc Yoh needs words and Segasaki is all about actions. Anyway, back to little moments and how they interpret them differently. One of the things that stuck out to me the most was the dinner scenes in the first episode when Segasaki asks for sauce. Obviously in the first one he had called the food bland, which he probably thought as just teasing but Yoh likely took as an insult to him personally. Then when he has Yoh give him the sauce in the first dinner he also grabs Yoh's hand and smiles at him. Segasaki thinks he's flirting, Yoh I don't think registers that. Then at the second dinner when Yoh reaches for the sauce while sitting and can't reach it, Segasaki is clearly trying to suppress laughter. Segasaki just thinks Yoh is cute, but Yoh probably thinks Segasaki is laughing at him in a mocking way. There's so much more I could gush about but those moments just really stuck out to me! Shout out to the actors because you can really tell how much thought they put into how their characters would act and react in certain situations and they've pulled it off beautifully.

It's literally just about the struggles of using words and what happens when that means insecurities so deep that they won't go anywhere without the right reassurance.

Yoh desperately wants to be loved by Segasaki but simply cannot believe it or face it as a concept in and of itself. He cannot. He loves Segasaki so much it overwhelms him but all he sees it the Cool Person he met, the one that everyone was friends with while he was alone and while even his friends mocked him for staring.

And Segasaki thinks he's being obvious. He loves Yoh so much that he just plain doesn't see Yoh's insecurities because he sees no reason for him to be insecure. There's nothing to be insecure about. Yoh is the most important in his life by a landslide, no one else matters, no else is even there.

Segasaki sees everything Yoh does as cute but every time he thinks Yoh is cute Yoh thinks he's mocking him. Because Yoh is deeply insecure. So he cannot see Segasaki's love for what it is because all he sees is the people who've mocked him in the past.

It's obvious that Segasaki has never used words as his primary form of communication while Yoh might be more nervous about using his words but he thinks in words. He thinks all the time. He is an overthinker and he does not stop without a good reason.

Watching everyone around him try to reassure him that Segasaki loves him while Yoh desperately finds reasons that he couldn't possibly love him because he is so desperately afraid of loving him more than he is loved... which is impossible because he is the literal focus of Segaskai's entire life.

It's so well done and the actors are absolutely brilliant. Such a good show.

(Between this and My Beautiful Man, it appears that 'Japanese BL about men who can't communicate and still get into BDSM relationships regardless' might be my favorite genre.)

Dian is closest to Himei (@lookatmysillies), Solei (@solei-eclipse), and Nyx, I would say. Those are all people he's willing to be fully honest with- while he loves Aurien (@aurienneirua), he puts up a front of strength around her, and he is good friends with Flor/Rose (@sotogalmo & @rosedeleca), too, but those are people he enjoys doing things with and if they ever were just hanging out doing nothing, I think he would be nervous/awkward and talk a lot to fill the presumed silence. Solei and Dian have a great time hanging out and chatting and doing insane shit just because they feed off each other's warm energy and fill each other's need of being around a person but they understand a lot of each other's insecurities as well, making them something of a perfect fit! Himei just loves Dian unconditionally and doesn't mind his nattering on and his intensity, and he values her greatly for that. He's in love with Nyx so that's one is more or less self explanatory, methinks.

Yumi is closest to Asahi (@apriciticreveries) because that! is! her! girlfriend! but also she's close to Jae & Evon (@kofeedoggo), Nene, Innamorati (@alien-til-i-stage), and Moran (@geospiral). Jae, Evon and Yumi have mostly a good time just hanging out and doing things of little consequence together, which Yumi is deeply grateful for. Merry Post-Christmas moot!

Miguel's enhanced senses make him the best at communicating with or checking in on anyone he has already consumed. Not only can he hear them speaking to him from inside his stomach easily, but his enhanced sense of touch extends to his stomach as well - he can feel his prey's movements, breathing and even their heartbeat if they're leaning against his stomach wall.

Peter B finds this very impressive - in his own experience nomming people, he mostly just feels full, and he can hear his prey speak only if they talk loudly and he strains a bit to hear.

Miguel's enhanced sense of taste makes the process of nomming prey more enjoyable for him than most of the other spiders - he picks up on very distinct flavors whenever he noms someone, and he favors prey that have a combination of sweet and savory flavors. The spiders he's nommed have asked him to describe their flavors to him, but he has a hard time directly comparing them to normal food flavors.

Miguel's sense of smell and taste combined allow him to pick up on his prey's mood/mental state - he can tell if they're stressed, happy, scared, etc. based on the subtle chemical signals their bodies give off - not exactly pheromones, but similar.

also I love these headcanons. I think Miguel being able to feel his prey more acutely is so cool and I will now be adding it to my pile of mig hcs :D. plus it adds to his character because he's a workaholic no nonsense control freak /affectionate so of course he would be able to feel everything and make sure they’re fine inside of him.

Since he would probably only nom a select few of people (the ones who are close to him, the ones who he cares about deeply) he genuinely does care about how they feel. Especially if he can taste it. While he would prefer to stay stoic and distant, he finds that people manage to worm through his defenses and to his heart anyway.

If you’re one of those people, congrats! It’s a difficult feat but not impossible. He’s susceptible to genuine care and love and while he tries to run away from it, it catches up with him anyways. I’m not gonna pretend like this dude isn’t traumatized and struggles to accept that he’s allowed to have anything nice (judging off of his comics) but over time, if you’re determined enough to help him, he’ll definitely relent and let you in.

While he doesn’t really think he’s got any redeeming qualities, he shows that he cares through his concern. He’ll check up on you if he thinks you look exhausted or offer you a listening ear if you’re frustrated, etc. If you just want a place to relax and hide away from the overwhelming world outside, he’ll tentatively offer to nom you. Even though he’s afraid that you’ll reject him and think of him as a monster, he still wants to try, just in case you really do need it. He’ll set aside his own insecurities to help you. At his core, i think he’s a giver.

If you say yes, he’ll gulp you down with no further questions. Easy as that. Miguel wont admit that he likes to have someone tucked away inside of him, but his body betrays him, his stomach walls shifting to cradle them more comfortably, his hand subconsciously settling over his gut, etc. even if you don’t want to be gulped down, he’s fine with letting you rest on his shoulder or on his head while he works. Dead Friend Forever ep 12 initial reaction

It’s over am I happy? Not particularly. It is interesting though. Let’s go over it and then I’ll make my rating post for the whole series

Disclaimer upfront I get triggered by blood so I did watch some scenes with my hands covering the top of the scene so maybe I missed things.

Okay so let’s get into the ep

I find it interesting that Top, Jin, and Fluke all include their ‘friends’ in their hallucinations. While White, Phee, Tee are more self solo focused. I imagine if Por was alive his nightmare scenario would be group based because he wanted to be cool or if it was solo maybe it would be man he’s a really big asshole personality wise. Probably good he didn’t live to this last scene would have been redundant or abhorrent.

So Fluke was afraid of being bullied by Top and Tee. He never really felt a hundred percent with the group. I find it telling that Por and Non convince him to take his eyes out because people felt like he had no guilt for both of their deaths. Realistically if Fluke had stood up to Top and Tee when the camera got broken I do think because Fluke and Por were good friends Por might have believed Fluke over Top but maybe not. Por was an asshole. But him doing anything in the other scenes won’t have really helped. He didn’t have any power in the group dynamic. He wasn’t even particularly close to Jin the reason they both found non and the teacher was because they were in the same class.

I started to get suspicious we might be in dream sess for Top’s he’ll scape. 1 idk how he is still alive 2 he’s still very much on drugs anyways. Also the fear of being betrayed by his friends them not listening to him was an interesting motivation. We saying top was a people pleaser I guess? Idk I wanted more from his character. Did find it poetic he and Fluke offed each other when their fears were so routed in their friendships their bonds. Then that’s what threw them down the stairs.

Tee 😭😭😭😭 even in the nightmare trying to help Non over and over trying to give him hope. Trying to do all that he could. Trapped and trying his best. Shows that he deeply fundamentally didn’t want to be a bad guy. A caged animal tortured animal doesn’t run when you open the cage you have to show it the way out first. I think Tee was hoping seeing Non escape would mean he could go for his freedom too. I cried during his and White’s scene. Also how beautiful are they? I hope Tee survives

Once again I think something bad happened to White to make him feel like he’s dirty that he’s automatically a slut for making friends. Yes Tee gets jealous but I won’t say it’s abnormally so White puts that pressure on himself. He desperately wanted to be Tee’s above all else a very sweet motivator. I once again cried watching what happened. I’m glad Tan had second doubts about his death at least.

Jin stalker/unhealthy obsession? Idk it’s just what the TV imagery and the cell phones make me think of Because my mind goes to BTS Suga’s solo MV for Shadow. Jin’s certainly ashamed of what he did. He also had his friends in there saying he was scared they’d hate me. Very interesting. Jin is MAJORLY insecure. He values his perception and hates who he really is and the pleasure he desires. I was disappointed to see him still alive but then again if he had that injury I was curious if he would survive just based on blood loss to the hospital. Really really hated the visuals on that so… maybe I missed something

Found it heartbreaking that New’s Non was a good little brother. Ugh I can’t imagine losing my sister and this scene really hurts. That New has done all this shit but deep down he knows what New really felt about him and New’s scared he’s done the wrong thing.

Found it sus we see New die of a gut injury when the shot hit his shoulder. But was sweet that Non came back to thank him in his head. A good end although doubting it happened.

Wow Jin being the human one in this scene of the future. I guess he’d be an idealized version of Jin.

Uhhhhh yes? In that Tee would need to accept what happened and seek help. But also no? Phee showing his double standard here. Phee didn’t you just learn you would have been there for Non if you could? Well if Tee was suffering like that Phee you should visit him even if it’s hard it’d be his duty. Phee is partly responsible for what happened. Phee you can care about people you ain’t fucking and or their family members. It’s okay to have friends naturally and support them.

Season 2!!!! Big reveal? So how much of this ep was a dream?? Whole thing? From when new used the gas? I also wonder would New’s protections for himself actually work? Yes he has those cure smoke things but the nightmare stuff is still in everything. I would like it if maybe Non had survived and some how drugged them all? I don’t think he did but 9th person Mr Keng? Non? White? Steps in and all of this outcome has been Phee’s interpretation of the truth ep 12? Maybe idk. I can’t wait for season 2

& versus his past!

first part of my breakdown of 1x19, "kickin' it in china", that was supposed to be in my last post. i'd recommend reading it for context because i drift out of canon territory in some heavier ways that might not make sense here if you haven't already looked at it. (:

up until this point in the series, jack has been a pretty cool, confident, & unshakable kid, but we also haven't learned anything about him. we know he was trained by his grandfather [who's a karate master], but that's about it. he's incredibly skilled in martial arts & clearly very talented, but he's a very normal & down to earth guy. then we meet kai, and things sort of start to fall apart.

jack gets to go to china to fight in a tournament that he's, in his words, been dreaming of ever since he started training. woohoo! this is good! i'm sure he feels very accomplished & reassured of his skill level after being accepted to compete in the championship! maybe he can actually get over what happened with that random kid named kai he mentioned! jack is seeing a future for himself in martial arts again and is training in a new, healthy environment with people he likes. what's more important to him is that they seem to like him back!

the first thing we learn about kai is that he's the only opponent jack has lost to, and it was so devastating to him [likely physically and emotionally] that he gives up on karate until he moves to seaford. he seems uncomfortable talking about the subject and clearly doesn't want to elaborate, which i think can show "can show", since this is a kids show & they can't go too into detail that he's still somewhat insecure about his skill even though he rationally knows that he's the best in their dojo.

while we're making assumptions based off of writing choices, i think it's interesting that he confides in rudy & kim, intentionally keeping this from the other three; jack goes out of his way to talk to them outside. i like to think that he knows that they look up to him so he didn't want to talk about it in front of them, but logically this is just the writers keeping the a-plot separate from the b-plot lol. everybody, especially jerry, should've been involved, but i get that it's a kids show & they need to balance out the heavy stuff with the silly stuff.

the next thing we learn about this mysterious kai opponent comes from the man himself! this match jack is talking about apparently happened two years ago ["i thought i beat the karate out of you two years ago."], so not at all close to the start of the series. this is something that deeply affected jack, enough to have made him give up on something that really matters to him. if we assume that kickin' it follows the standard full season = full year formula, then kai would've beaten jack probably about a year before the start of the show, maybe a little over that, since 1x19 would be happening by the end of that season year.

i could make a whole separate post about jack's [c-]ptsd via his grandfather [long-term] & the fight with kai [one main standalone traumatic event], but the gist is that i cannot see a reality where that fight doesn't absolutely wreck him in more ways than one. jack was beaten so badly that he dropped karate, something he was probably training in since he could walk, for an entire year. that poor kid absolutely develops ptsd.

he also had no intentions of returning to it until he met jerry, milton, eddie, & rudy. even still, he almost chooses to walk out on them until he realizes that they're just as passionate about karate as he probably was as a younger kid. jack insists that he's not a karate guy and is a self-proclaimed skater boy, but it's clear that he still loves it and loves the culture [& action movies teehee] surrounding it.
