How to get into the mind of a character? Honestly this can be for your OWN character or a fictional character. I'm wanting to write for characters- headcanons and fanfictions- and I'm so afraid I'll write them so uncanny to how they actually are.

How to get into the mind of a character?

To get into the mind of a character, you have to understand that character, believe in that character, and even "live" the character's life. But we all know each individual is different, and we cannot live different lives. A normal person who grew up in peacetime cannot fully understand the hardships of a warrior, and a doctor cannot know the thoughts of a mafia boss.

So, how can writers create believable characters? How can they possibly offer a believable soldier, cop, detective, alcoholic, or any given character type if they themselves haven't lived as them? How can they possibly offer a believable character in a situation that they've never been in?

Here are some tips you can use to get into the minds of characters:

Tip 1: Observe real-life people

To create well-rounded characters, observe real people around you. Pay attention to their behaviors, mannerisms, speech patterns, and thought processes. Take note of how they express emotions, handle conflicts, and make decisions. Drawing from real-life observations can add depth and authenticity to your characters. You can also search for novels and movies with different themes, study how characters with different pasts, biographies, occupations, and personalities act, behave, gesture, and speak. The best way is to prepare a small notebook and a pen so you can carry it with you wherever you go.

Tip 2: Create a detailed character profile

Develop a detailed character profile that includes information such as their age, background, beliefs, values, goals, and fears. Consider their relationships with other characters and how these dynamics influence their thoughts and actions. Delve into the character's past and explore significant events that have shaped them. Consider their upbringing, traumas, successes, and failures. These can provide you with a roadmap for understanding the character's mindset.

Tip 3: Use internal monologues and journaling

Imagine the character's internal thoughts and dialogues with themselves. Consider what they might be thinking in different situations, their hopes, dreams, and fears. (And why do they dream of that? Why are they afraid of that thing? What in the past made them afraid? Always asking questions.) Writing internal monologues or journal entries from the character's perspective can help you delve into their mindset and gain insight into their unique voice.

Tip 4: Consider their external influences

Characters are influenced by their environment, culture, and society. Reflect on how external factors such as family, friends, societal norms, or even the story's setting impact their thoughts and behaviors. This will help you portray their worldview more accurately.

Tip 5: Study the source material

If you're writing about an existing character from a book, TV show, or movie, immerse yourself in the source material. Pay attention to their dialogue, actions, and interactions with other characters. Take note of their personality traits, motivations, and backstory. This will help you develop a strong foundation for understanding the character. For example, recently I suddenly became interested in Nightwing (do you know him? Nightwing from the Batman series!), and I wanted to write a few short stories about him. So I found all the comics and movies that featured Nightwing and watched them one by one. I don't take notes because I have a pretty good memory (especially for characters I like), but I still recommend taking notes on special things to note.

Tip 6: Practice free writing

Set aside time for free writing exercises where you write from the character's point of view. Allow your thoughts to flow without judgment or editing. Just write, write, and write. You can reread and make corrections after you're done. Remember to gather your posts in one place; otherwise, you'll lose or forget them (like me!).

Getting into the mind of a character is an ongoing process that requires continuous exploration and refinement. The more you invest in understanding your character's thoughts, feelings, and motivations, the more compelling and authentic your writing will become.

That one post about great domestic policy and HORRIFIC foreign policy just does not stop being true

Domestic Policy Win: The American Museum of Natural History in NYC is closing down two entire exhibits of Native American belongings in order to comply with a federal order that requires museums to obtain the consent of indigenous nations in order to display artifacts of native origin. The linked ProPublica article specifies that the exhibits in question are the Eastern Woodlands and Great Plains Halls. To quote:

The new federal regulations, which went into effect this month, prohibit the display of items subject to NAGPRA without tribal consent and ban all research done without tribal consent. In addition, the regulations closed a loophole that had allowed museums such as the American Museum of Natural History to keep ancestral remains and burial items by claiming that they are “culturally unidentifiable” — meaning in their view they could not be connected to present-day Indigenous communities based on available evidence — and therefore could not readily be returned to tribes.

Foreign Policy Fail: The United States, the UK, and several other nations, in response to claims that several members of UNRWA were involved in the Oct. 7th attacks, have cut funding to the relief agency in question. The Al Jazeera article profiles the Palestinian response, and also specifies that this funding was pulled after the UNRWA launched an investigation in response to Israel's allegations that 12 members of the relief agency were involved.

Australia, Canada, Italy and the United States said they would halt funding to the agency, while European Union foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said the 27-member bloc would “assess further steps and draw lessons based on the result of the full and comprehensive investigation”. Germany, Finland, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom then also joined the list of countries pausing financial aid to the UN agency, whose facilities where displaced Palestinians sought shelter have been repeatedly attacked in Israeli air raids. Unfortunately, the WSJ article is paywalled, so I can't access the full thing for a quote.

Anyway. Call your reps. I'm not even talking to just the Americans this time, call your fucking reps. If they aren't donating to UNRWA, then make them do something. Is the organization possibly a security risk, and the concerns legitimate? Maybe! But you cannot cut the funding that is keeping 2.3mill people alive on an already shoestring budget and not immediately put a backup security net in place.

Until then, pick a charity with a good rating, donate and signal boost it, and politely harass your politicians.

Politely as in "don't shout at or cuss out the staffers that man the phone lines," because they are not your reps, but also because your number is going to get blocked and then you won't be able to pressure them in the future. Do be firm, though.

I'm personally picking the PCRF this time, since one of the three remaining hospitals in south Gaza has been evacuated and shut down, and the evacuees reportedly include women who just got C-sections, which means the evacuees also include newborns, and medical care is in high demand. They're also currently focused on providing clean drinking water to the people of Palestine. That said, so is food, and shelter, and winter clothing. Pick a need, find a charity, and toss them some money.

Writing Characters With Special Senses

Hey! Thanks for the ask :)

I’m going to categorize the various types of “hallucinations” your characters may experience: 

Super-Sensitive Senses 

This is where your character would see/hear/smell things that others cannot. Hypersensitivity is generally considered a superpower, but what if it gets too much?

Your character can hear the sound of people’s blood flowing in their veins…which is indistinguishable from the sound of the nearby river, or the water flowing from a tap.

A party or buffet always smells faintly of blood from the barbeque/steak being served…which smells dangerously close to human blood, making a party smell like a murder scene for the character. 

You can depict the disadvantages of hypersensitivity where being able to pick up minute stimuli actually creates confusion for the character as to what they’re sensing is even real or not. They might:

Be scared of going outside because the world is simply too much for them to process

Get a headache

Develop random sets of allergies

So, your character might: 

Try to impair their sense of smell/sight, etc. because a flood of stimuli is actually painful for them

Avoid certain places and people

Befriend animals with senses above that of a human. A character who can smell extremely well will vibe with their Golden Retriever more than their human buddies. 

Struggle with anxiety that something bad is happening. When you have too much stimuli to process, one of them will always tend to be ominous.

Seeing Another Realm

This is where your character has “The Sight” per se. They see elves, fairies, demons that others cannot see. 

They feel scared and horrified. They might even seek psychological help and try to “kill” what they see. If they still can’t get rid of them, they may choose to ignore them.

On the other hand, the character might try to befriend and follow the things they see. They may actually have fun chasing and exploring these outworldly creatures. But once the Sight fades or the creatures disappear, they’re left teary and empty. 

They may cope with this by drawing pictures and writing diaries about what they see. 

Gamified Reality 

This is where your character is living in a “game world” or the world suddenly becomes (partly) gamified for them. They’ll see instruction panels popping up, HP bars or see profiles of other people as game characters. 

Your character might have fun with this “game”, but slowly start to confuse the purpose of their life with the tasks handed to them by this “game”

Your character starts to over rely on the game to form relationships. For example, let’s say a character can see a “Likeability Score” to determine how much the other person likes them. They start distrusting people with a lower number and obsess over increasing the “Likeability Score” rather than being themselves.

One day, the gamified reality suddenly disappears, but the character is left living in that reality, viewing the world as a gamer would.

Hallucinating

This is where the character actually sees stuff that doesn’t exist at all. Generally, these hallucinations will originate from a preexisting (almost always negative) memory, or is the result of a compulsion the character has. 

The character may make up a chant to make the bad memories/hallucinations go away. (e.g. “he’s gone, he’s gone, this isn’t real.”)

The character has a sign of their own which helps them distinguish hallucinations. For example, the hallucinations might be extremely real but with a slight red glow to them. 

The character may actually talk nicely to the hallucinations to go away and wait for them to fade. Each time they meet someone, they would mutter, "please go", wait for two seconds and if the person doesn't lose transparency, you know they're real.

hi! i love your eddie diaz character profile gif set and was wondering if you would be able to explain how you did a few things. firstly the second gif with the gifs of the circles and then the arrows? and then in the 3rd and 6th gif how you have a gradient type color background behind the text you put? thank you so much!

so for the second gif i cannot take credit at all, it was all becca's fantastic work on this beautiful gifset. for my version, i did all the shapes with the shape tools. here's how i did it:

i started my laying down some line guides to layout where i wanted the line shapes to go, to help me draw them later (view > new guide). i did 1 vertical line and 5 small horizontal lines. optional i guess, but super helpful to layout things.

select the line tool, a color (you can change it later), and enter a weight (aka the thickness you want your line to be, for example 10px) and draw the lines along the guides you created, or while holding shift as you make the lines so it stays straight. *make sure you draw all shapes on a different layer each time* (deselect the current layer to create a new layer with a new shape), just in case you need to move each line around later.

for the circles i selected the ellipse tool and drew a circle shape while holding shift so it stays a perfect circle. this is the outline circle.

for the circle gif shape i duplicated this first circle and made it a different color (to see what i'm doing). hitting ctrl + T, make the shape smaller (while holding shift) and center it over the first circle shape.

once i have my 2 shapes on top of each other, i duplicated both of them 4 more times and placed them where i wanted them on my canvas.

for the arrows i did something very similar: i selected the polygon tool and entered 3 sides. i then drew the 7 triangle shapes on a different layer each and placed them where i wanted them.

once you have all your shapes where you want them and you're sure you're not gonna move them anymore, select all the smaller circle gif shape layers and put them in a group for later use. you can move this group on top and disable it for now.

then select all remaining shapes and right click > merge shapes. you should then get one merged layer with all the shapes you drew together. you can change the color by double clicking on the layer's thumbnail.

if you want different colors, you can duplicate this layer with different colors and use layer masks, that's what i did.

for the circle gifs, select the first smaller circle shape you saved in a group earlier. while holding ctrl, click on this layer's thumbnail. it will create a selection of this circle. you then want to create a new group and give it a layer mask. it's in this group that you want to put your small gif layers in. then just repeat this step for all 4 circles.

and that should be it for the shapes in gif #2~

for the gradient boxes behind text i did something quite similar:

type your text first

then select the rectangle tool and in the fill setting choose a gradient (you can change it later)

carefully draw the rectangle shape around the text. if you hold shift here you can make a square shape.

once the shape created, slid this rectangle shape layer under the text

you can change the gradient and its angle by double clicking on the shape layer's thumbnail

and that's it! hope this was clear enough :)

Hmmmm. Who's a famous Caster--I mean, researcher--from Kjerag who casts with a book and dagger-like staff? Is this just a joke on the part of the artist, or can we scrape together some more evidence for this (crack) relationship? Let's dig a little deeper.

Steward's profile: (Interesting little easter egg: the rectangular white tag on Steward's wand is not unlike the same one on Gnosis's BOC staff that read Tiefkuhlen.)

Steward's skin has similar tailoring to Gnosis's skin and Gnosis's 2nd anni art; also note the ice crystals around Steward and the monocle.

The flavor text for his skin reads (MTL): "One of Steward's self-services. Before reuniting with his teammates, Steward traveled from country to country, carefully considering the benefits they could bring to Kjerag.

Honestly I can't stop thinking about this. Picturing Gnosis overseeing the tradesmen coming to Kjerag for whatever reason and his eye falling upon Steward and teaching him Arts in his offtime at the lab; Stewart admiring SA's efforts to open Kjerag and volunteering to help... An older Steward donning a monocle not because he needs it overly much but because he's emulating his mentor Gnosis and Gnosis internally dying of his youthful enthusiasm.

⛥ ... Hello, and welcome to my blog! I'm not entirely sure why I've not done this yet, but today I'll finally be making a post introducing myself formally.

⛥ ... I am Alister / Graves, (he/it 🏳️‍⚧️) the host of an Unspecified Dissociative Disorder system. This means we have alters (seperate identities that exist within one body) and I am simply one of many here, although I am the main person who will be posting here. Our bodily age is 20!

I am once again starting a spite project. And it's all Inkblot's fault.

This site is a developmental nightmare. There's horrible misalignments everywhere, zero accessibility options, a horrible color scheme, and it's very clear they're not even looking at the code they export.

In literally any framework that isn't just basic HTML, you have the ability to make very modular layouts. Even in basic PHP, if there's a feature of your site (like a header) that's going to appear on every page, you code it in one file, then import that file everywhere you're going to be using it. Across every structure, you're going to have your base file (often called "layout") that includes all of your header and nav information. Sometimes your footer will be separate (like in PHP), or if you're using a beefier templating engine (like Twig or Jinja2) you're just gonna have a bit of code that says "page content goes here."

You then go on and create various views. Stuff like the skeleton for profiles, feeds, notifications, individual posts, every other page type you'll need. Each of them referencing those basic elements from the layout.

Only Inkblot hasn't done that. For some bizarre reason. All 3 screenshots above are different pages across Inkblot. The explore page, showing their "default" header. The "home" page that looks like they forgot what they were doing and made a sidebar instead of including the header. Then the "categories" page where the header is horribly squashed.

Also, for some bizarre reason, they've disabled any ability to use keyboard navigation on the site. This is offered by default by the browser, you don't have to do anything. Arrow keys, page up/down and the spacebar all scroll for you. Having that disabled is a serious accessibility issue.

All I know about the "team" behind this mess is just 1 developer and a handful of people helping to moderate it all. And I am determined to prove (to no one, really), that a single developer is not an excuse for this absolute tragedy of a website. It's a shambling mess of poorly strung together templates and plugins, with way too many things linking to other websites.

YOUR ABOUT PAGE SHOULD NOT BE ON A DIFFERENT DOMAIN AND LOOK LIKE A COMPLETELY DIFFERENT WEBSITE! FUCK!

My goal is to include as many features as I can that are found on Inkblot (minus monetization). I will also be drawing inspiration from older art gallery sites like Fur Affinity and 2010's DeviantArt. It will be 90% built from scratch using Django (instead of Flutter), only implementing plugins and code that isn't my own when 1) it can be properly sourced and 2) can be seamlessly integrated.

If I can find people to help me test alpha versions and moderate content, I will hopefully one day launch it as a real website. Otherwise, it will at the very least be a functional demo as part of my portfolio.

EDIT: If this were just someone's personal website, I wouldn't care. Inkblot's design infuriates me on so many levels because for starters, they're charging money for a "premium" version. Not just a patreon or a tipping system, but an integrated "premium" system. And second, they're handling your personal data. Part of why I'm not even sure I'll launch mine is web security is a HUGE deal. You can't just fumble your way through it and assume you'll be okay. Look at what Pillowfort did. If someone is making absolute novice mistakes like squashing images horribly out of proportion, they cannot be trusted to handle your passwords or other information. Period.

A big announcement

So to start things off, this arrived yesterday to my immense surprise. It's actually real (I might have been so confused about getting this that I reached out to Twitch Support to just verify they hadn't made some kind of mistake), and I still really can't believe I reached this point, even a full day later. I should have posted about it here when it happened instead of my personal account, but I didn't really know what to say at the time. I still don't. But I did also want to share some important information that I already put over on the Twitter side of things:

Okay so plans for the channel and things moving forward:

I *need* to try to figure out a two-monitor set up with only the equipment I have at this time (laptop and PC) because I want to be able to not have to just watch the OBS screen when I'm using the Elgato. I have to manage this with what I currently have because I cannot afford to try and get a second PC monitor or upgrade my tech. Also the streaming room is not my personal room and in fact is in the shared extra room of the house, so I can't just plop a second monitor onto it and take up all that space even if I could afford another monitor.

This ties directly into the 2nd part which is to finally get a set of PNGs to actually have "Strap" on screen and learn how to correctly use reactive images. This requires the figuring out of the 1st part before anything else as when I use the Elgato, I'm only able to see the things you see, and I don't want to struggle with the games because I have my PNG slapped on the screen.

3rd, saving up of funds from here on out so that I can afford to commission the people I have already decided on for any emotes and graphics, including the PNG if I'm still unable to use my old tablet.

4th, I want to get things further planned for the 100 follower celebration (which is now also tied in with the Affiliate one), but for that to happen I will need to stick with the hiatus and pour all my abilities into my education first, as I'm pretty far behind in one of the courses.

Once I have everything under control, I'll be reaching out to the three people I wanted to join me to start actually planning a day that might work for everyone as well as getting them all introduced to each other so that when it all happens, no one is left feeling too uncomfortable.

I'm really sorry that it's been taking so long already, and it currently looks like I won't be able to meet my original plan of trying to have it this month. It's a really big thing for me and with the Affiliate goal added in, I want to make this something really memorable, not just for me but also for all of you, new and old, who have helped me to get to a goal that I was starting to view as impossible for me to achieve, and for helping me get there far sooner than I ever anticipated.

5th, I need to learn how to create, run and manage a Discord server so that I can have announcements like this be seen the right way and not by having to make multiple posts on either Twitter or Tumblr to get something across to the people that are genuinely interested in things.

And last, but not least (to me), I want to find the time to get a proper profile icon designed for both here and on the stream and archive side of things. I have a few ideas in mind, but I need to iron them out, and it's something that I want to do (at least the initial drawing phase) myself. Right now, I'm the guy with the shiny Umbreon icon, but it's not fully indicative of what my channel or even "Strap" is like. Just like I made the current one myself, I want to make the next one too, even if it means needing to have someone polish up and finish my rough work.

It's something meaningful to me, and hopefully, I can find a way to still include an homage to the original icon in a fitting way. I have so much planned and so much work to do, and I'd be here all day making just a massive wall of text that would likely start to test Tumblr's character limit on blog posts. So I'll just wrap it all up with this:

Step 1: Draw a circle. This is the hardest step.

Step 2: Add the nose, lips and chin. All of these can vary in shape and size, so just remembering general placement is your best bet. Also, there is usually a little bump at the bottom of the chin that most people forget, so make sure to add that if applicable!

Step 3: Add the eyebrow ridge. Again, size and shape can vary based on your preference. The line in the middle is a reminder that in a side profile, over half of the face is covered by hair (anything past the ear) Most of you side profile is hair. Or a bare head if the character is bald.

Step 4: Add facial features. Note that the eye and mouth cannot be drawn the same way you would if the character was facing forward. Also, The top lip usually covers the bottom lip, meaning that the mouth is almost always tilted downward naturally. Even when you smile, it's often a down-up curve, so keep that in mind when drawing.

Step 5: Add hair and details and you're done!

(Extra note: The shoulder is further down that you might think! Your shoulders naturally slope down, and you have an extra muscle between your neck and arm. When drawing a side profile, make sure to show that space.)

This basically is a continuation of this short fic, only going further into the early-on relationship between Captain Midoriya and you, (Y/N).

“You know,” His mellifluous voice startled you, “It’s awfully rude to stare.”

The sentence sliced through the silence of the night like the sharp sword resting upon his jutting hip.

The sea was calm and the moon was full, not a cloud in the sky. Stars shimmered brightly above, milky way weaving through each dot of light.

And here you stood, on a pirate ship.

Gathering your bearings, you inhale sharply through your nose, the salty scent of the sea nearly making you gag,

“It’s awfully rude to kidnap someone and throw them into a dirty old cell with no food or water as well.”

His hearty chuckle made you gulp, the tickling of butterflies has no place in your stomach. Not now. Preferably not ever with him, but most pirates did have this.. salacious charm to them.

“Very true…” He sighed, “Forgive me.”

The fact that you were having this conversation with his back infuriated you.

He didn’t care enough about your escape from your cell in the dead of night, when all his crewmen were asleep, to even pay you full attention.

It was as if he viewed you as the least frightening and threatless thing on this vessel, a harmless, stowaway mouse.

Swallowing the lump of logical fear lodged in your parched throat, you strung together all the courage you had on you with a flimsy string and strode over to him, hands fisting the fabric of your dress.

The pirate was leaning against the railing of his ship, staring down at a dirty compass resting in the palm of his large hand, lip pulled between his thumb and index finger and he studied the spinning of the needle trapped behind cracked glass.

His features from behind became clearer with every cautious step you took, messy green curls pulled into a ponytail, few strings of loose hair framing his chiseled face. He was practically glowing in the light of the moon that shone in front of him. Beautifully dangerous, like a barracuda.

“It’s broken.” You pointed out to him, the captain who wasn’t wearing a hat, an air of finality in your tone.

If he was plotting a course by a broken compass..

You were royally fucked.

You’d be lost at sea.

Would you ever see land again?

The nauseating rocking of the ship had you almost on your knees, praying. As the days went by, your sea legs grew, but you still weren’t used to it. You didn’t want to be used to it.

“It's only broken to those who don’t understand it,” He teased, sparing you a glance before returning his gaze down to the old piece of junk.

He didn’t seem to want to bother with taking you back down to your own personal hell, yet.

That was good enough for you.

You came up here for air, after all.

It was suffocating below deck.. The stench of mildew having made you sick.

Who knew you took fresh air for granted? Even if it was salty.

At least you could see the open sea and how the moon reflected on the murky water. It was enchanting, something out of a romance novel, but you wished you saw it under better circumstances.

Something about being on a piece of wood out where land was nowhere in sight and the bottom of the ocean was so far out of reach you couldn't even imagine it unnerved you.

You never understood seamen, or pirates, even.

They did this stuff for fun.

At least seamen did it as a way to make income.

The click of his tongue brought your attention back to the freckled man, murmurs under his breath only just now reaching your ears.

Directions and landmarks, sea terminology, things you didn't understand slipped past his chapped lips.. Until something you did know was uttered.

“You’re sailing for the port of Baringham? The low-profile port? That only deals with textiles?”

“Many questions for an answer you already know,” he quipped, “I’m taking you there.”

“How are you going to take me to a place where you cannot even plot a course to?”

Huffing, he finally turned his head to you, amusement written on his face along with a charming smile that would’ve made anyone swoon,

“Alright, you’ve got me.”

Pushing himself up with his cloth covered forearms, he moved to lean with his back against the rail, crossing his arms as he gave you a sliver of respect with direct eye contact.

You briefly considered pushing him over.

“I’m a bit lost.”

“Ah, so you admit it.”

Humming, you mimicked his action, crossing your arms under your chest.

“Fortunately for you, I happen to know where it is.”

“That so?” He mused, leaning toward you ever so slightly, panicked interest cracking through his calm, forest green eyes that you couldn't help but notice twinkle, “Care to tell me?”

“Mmm. I would… but what’s in it for me?”

“What is it that you want? Isn't your guaranteed freedom at said port enough?”

“No.”

“..” The captain was shocked into silence, clear amusement still written all over his face.

Combing his dirty fingers through his messy green locks, he gave you an inquisitive stare,

“Then what else?”

You thought for a moment. What else did you want?

You wanted many things, things of which he could not grant. No one could.

You’d have to settle for something else.

Something you would prefer.. suddenly, the sickness you felt when you were in that gross cell came to mind.

“Don’t put me back in that damned cell!” The shout bubbled up from nowhere, shocking even you, “And.. and water. I want water.” You mumbled out.

Silence settled into the night once more after your loud declaration.

Your face burned with pure embarrassment as he became the one to stare at you..

Until he started laughing.

The kind of boisterous and infectious laughter that forced you to look away from his regrettably handsome self.

“You have yourself a deal, princess!”

The title further made your cheeks burn, drawing your attention back to him just to meet his enchanting gaze.

It draws you in like a sailor to a mermaid.

“Now, mind telling me?”

Licking your lips, you pointed to the heavens, his eyes following, “Travel so the brightest star in the sky is behind you, and follow the little dipper. The port is due north from there.”

It was a route you didn’t mean to memorize years ago.

The loud snap of the compass being closed made you jump, composure temporarily lost yet again.

“Ahh..” His gaze flickered over the sky, no doubt seeing a plethora of routes with each familiar constellation as he mapped the one you spoke of.

“I see it now, silly me.”

Looking down at the deck, he rubbed the back of his sweaty neck, messing with the curly hair that fell loose. Would you be so bold as to think that he may be embarrassed?

He clapped a hand on your shoulder after pushing himself fully off the rail, the whisper of thanks fanning hotly across your ear as he climbed the creaking stairs to the helm, brown boots clicking on each step as he did so.

Spinning the wheel round, the ship croaked as it turned so that the north star fell behind.

“How did you know this course?”

His curiosity was natural. After all, how did you, daughter of a well-off navy general who had never stepped aboard a boat before, know the way to a port not many knew of?

The answer was simple, though it was an answer you didn't exactly wish to know. Cursed with knowledge as you would say, blessed would say the others.

“My father.” Bitterness stung your words, and Izuku whistled.

“Slimy piece of shit he is.” It was grumbled under your breath, and yet he still somehow heard you, offering a grunt of agreement, eyes focused ahead.

“I hate the bastard myself,” he seethed through his teeth, “I’d offer up all the rum and shillings I have to see his blood spill and stain my deck by my own hands.”

The fury that clung to each word he spoke sent shivers down your spine, his aura threatening as he fell to his thoughts.

“I have an obvious reason to hate him,”

“You do?”

Your childlike curiosity warmed his heart, bringing his attention back to you,

“You don’t get scars from nowhere, love.”

Your nose crinkled at the term of endearment, climbing the stairs yourself as you rolled your eyes.

“Your scars are hidden,”

“His scars mark my back.”

Blood drained from your face, bile creeping up your throat at the meaning.

You felt sick and disgusted with the blood that ran through your veins.

You hated being the daughter of a monster.

“Oh..” The whisper caught on the wind pulling at the sails.

Silence fell once more, the unbearable kind that made even his skin crawl with uncomfortableness.

Had the crew been awake, he probably would have laughed, grabbed a bottle of rum, and stumbled into his captains quarters to drink the memories away.. But his crew was asleep.

Oh, how he missed his first mate. He was the whole reason you were on his ship in the first place.

“Just your back?”

“Do you wish he gave me more?” Izuku chuckled, teasing you once again.

“No.” You huffed, furious he would even suggest such a thing.

“I have a few.. Mainly on my hand but I-”

His words died on his tongue, heart beating in his ears when he felt your much smaller and daintier hands grip his own, the only one covered in white scars.

He gulped as you traced the smooth cicatrix on his rough skin, a small blush on his cheeks, your touch soothing the pain behind each one.

Tears not his own fell onto his skin, rolling off and spattering onto the deck below, but he remained silent, allowing you to trace the scars over his forearm, not specifying which were and which were not created by your father.

He liked your touch.

“I hate him too.” Your words were raw with hatred, touch fading as you pulled away and yet he still felt the tingle of it under his skin.

He wanted more. He hadnt felt such gentleness in so long..

That doesn’t matter, though.

“Why?” He found himself asking.

Lips pressing into a frown, he watched the sea as you mindlessly walked around behind him, stories spilling past your fervent lips, stories that made silent anger bubble in his gut, stories that you had never told anyone before - that you were forced to keep inside yourself for so long that they spilled out without care.

His desire to burn that man's ship down, to watch as the bright flames engulf him and it, destined to forever be lost at the bottom of the sea, grew tenfold.

Deku, the infamous pirate, prided himself on not giving a shit half the time, but he couldn’t ignore the empathy he felt in the moment.

You both had a common enemy.

Two strangers.. Where’s the irony in that?

“I don't like you,” You started after finishing up your uncontrollable word vomit, stopping in your tracks, “But the fact that I find this kidnapping to be the most enjoyable days of my life because I’m away from him and all the power he possesses is concerning.”

Why you told this to an untrustworthy, murdering thief.. You had no idea.

Perhaps it was because you had a feeling he would understand after hearing you out.

Or maybe it was the fact that he was currently the only person you could say it to.

After kidnapping you, all he had said to you was ‘welcome aboard!’ before locking the cell you just escaped from days later.

You should hate him, you should wish him to hang like every other disgusting pirate out there, especially for snatching you from your home in the dead of night, transferring you from one cell to the next, but you don't.

You wouldn’t show that, though.

Many words weighed heavy in Izukus mind, words he was unsure if he could say, or if it’d be the right thing to say.

He wasn’t heartless like some assumed, he wasn’t this traitorous asshole stories floating around about him told, he was just a pirate with a kind heart and skilled hands.

He almost felt bad that he planned to give you back to your father.

He felt bad that for that first day you were aboard his ship, he had wicked ideas of marking and ruining you in so many ways your father would only ever look at you and see him. 

It was a cruel way to get revenge, revenge through someone else.

Actually, maybe he was an asshole.

Right then and there, he decided that that would no longer be his course of action, not if he could help it.

Hell, he wanted to keep you as far away from your father as he could. Would he abandon his first mate? No. He’d devise some other plan. Maybe get you somewhere safe, ask for your dress, and then cover a scarecrow in said dress and use that as a tool to get him back.

It could work!

Or maybe not.

Nonetheless, plan A through D were just thrown overboard,

“Well,” He smacked the wooden wheel to get your attention,

“You’re a pretty little thing, so I like you.”

You scoffed, he continued,

“Consider yourself prisoner to your fathers enemy for a long time to come, because darlin’,”

He drawled, sauntering over to you as you instinctively backed up, only to be trapped against the railing.

His muscular arms caged you in, taller frame towering over you as electrifying green eyes intoxicated your soul and sent heat flashes up your body,

“I’m not gonna let you go so easily.”

A-Café (Update #12) - Part 2 of Deep Dive into A-Café Features!

Welcome back to part 2 on the features we expect to have in the A-Café Beta. You can view Part 1 here. We have a lot to discuss so let's get started! (Keep in mind that some features may not look exactly the same in the official Beta, as the photos presented are from the prototype).

When we last talked, you had just input your search criteria and received your search results for individuals. So, what now? Let’s say you want to know more about someone named Eren. To do so, click on her profile.

Here you can read her short bio. It describes in a few sentences who she is and what she’s looking for. To find out more, click on the blue “About” button underneath said bio.

The first part of the “About” section lists basic information pertaining to Eren.

Her orientation, gender, full pronouns, religion, and so on.

The second part, which can be accessed by pressing the “Preferences” button at the top of the screen, describes attributes that she wants her future partner to have.

This includes their orientation, gender, age, religion, child status, drug use, and so on.

In Eren’s case, she wants an Aromantic man who is around her age, and lives close by. Some other important attributes she desires are: not smoking, not drinking unless they’re in social situations, being child-free, being vegetarian or vegan, and so on.

Finally, the last part of the “About” section can be accessed by pressing the “Comfort” button in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.

Here, you’ll see exactly what Eren is and is not okay with regarding common relationship actions.

These actions include: Sex, Romance, Touch, Petnames, Kinks, and Polyamoury. For each topic, there is a text box which you can use to specifically describe your preferences. Above each box, is a slider to visually represent how strongly you like or dislike certain actions.

In Eren’s case, we can see that she loves Touch, and sensual affection in general. Her text box says: “I love cuddling, hugging, holding hands, kissing, etc.”.

Alright, you’ve learned a lot about Eren, and you seem to fit her criteria. How do you get in contact with her?

First, go back to her main profile page. There you’ll find a “friend request” button. If you click it, Eren will be notified that someone is interested in her. She can then choose whether or not to accept your request. If she does, you will be allowed to start a private conversation with her.

In A-Café, you cannot message someone out of the blue. And no one can surprise message you either, (except for the app’s Moderators of course). This helps prevent you from being contacted by users who don’t fit your criteria at all, or who are obviously trolls.

This can remain true even in Group settings (if you so choose). Speaking of which, how do you join Groups?

If you remember, Groups can be found in much the same way that individual people can. You input search criteria, and are met with a list of results. You can also switch between the two categories via the “Sort By” button.

In this case, let’s say that the Group “Hawaiian A-Specs” has caught your eye.

By clicking on their picture, you’re met with three descriptive sections: “Who are we”, “Meeting Times”, and “Activities”.

The Hawaiian A-Specs are “A club for adult A-Spec friends who like drawing, painting, and hanging out while creating in general!”

As for their meeting times, it depends on whether it's offline or online, but generally they meet on Mondays and Fridays from 5 - 7 pm, (GMT timezone).

Finally, their activities include: “Drawing, Painting, and Chatting.”

Hey, that sounds like a fun group for an artist like you! Why not join them by clicking the “Join Request” button?

The group’s moderators will be sent a notification that you’re interested, and hopefully grant you access to their space. This might seem unnecessary compared to before; why should people request to join a group?

Fortunately, Group mods will be able to choose which parts of their group are public or private. This means that for some groups, you have to be “let in” by the mods to see or do anything.

But in other groups, you might be able to view upcoming events or see the group feed. It all depends on what the mods of those groups decide.

Nightwing 79 Review

i said i would and i will. i did like this issue! not as striking and attention grabbing as 78, but i think this issue was meant to be a foundation one, laying out the groundwork for the future. overall, pretty good. also there wasn't enough bitewing. as promised, overly extensive metaphors and me reading too much into things under the cut

i know i've talked about this cover before, but this particular thing is oddly important to me, so i'll talk about it again

this is me, once again screaming about how artists put nightwing in traditionally feminine poses and how every time i see it i just get whiplash. i mean, true, the main reason why is because nightwing is a so often sexualized character, and putting him in these poses just increases the objectification, which is a goal that dc producers have. but there are very few popular male characters that do this. the only one i can think of off the top of my head is deadpool, but that was so obviously a critique and a way to make fun of the media industry. when they draw dick like this, they’re being serious. they’re putting him in appealing poses meant to show him off, and that’s something that’s traditionally only been done to women.

it's a very direct and very loud breaking of traditional gender roles in media, especially for a character as high-profile and historic as dick grayson. colour also plays a factor in this. the entire background is pink. i was absolutely shocked when i first saw it, when the teaser came out, because i cannot think of any comic book covers of male comic heroes this high-profile where pink is even just prevalent in the cover, let alone the majority of the cover. the pink does look beautiful: it offsets and highlights the black and blue of dick's suit gorgeously, but does it with more finesse than orange or red. but the fact that the stylistic choice was made to accent and draw this cover with aesthetic and beauty in mind, completely ignoring traditional hard-set gender rules in art, was a conscious choice and one i wholeheartedly support.

just another example of the sexualization i was talking about. i remember seeing harley quinn in this exact pose in suicide squad.

so far, taylor's been pretty dead-set on bringing alfred to the forefront of importance in this series. he wants people to know how much he loves alfred's character, and how much the butler meant to dick growing up. he was dick's father too. but what i adore is how taylor managed to stress alfred's importance in a way that didn't insult or belittle bruce.

this is one of the best bruce and dick interactions i've seen, and it's done in one simple interaction. in this, bruce is tough and harsh. he knocked dick down hard, but then he reached a hand down and helped pull dick back up. let me analyze their dialogue for a minute

on your feet: this is bruce telling dick to get up. he's trained dick, he knows what the younger boy is capable of, he knows his limits, and he knows what dick can do. this is bruce telling dick i know you're strong enough to get up, so get up and prove me right

are you just going to knock me down again?: surface-level, it looks like dick's complaining. he doesn't like bruce's rough training, and he's tired of bruce knocking him down. but look at his face in this. he's smiling up at bruce, knowledgeable and a little hopeful. he knows that bruce is doing this to help dick better himself, he's completely on board with the rough training, because they both know the rewards are incredible. also, he's teasing. he's bantering with bruce. there's an ease in that joking statement, one that belies affection and intimacy. they've only known each other for a little bit, but they're already slipping into a close familial relationship.

it depends on how fast you learn: this is bruce bantering back. this is bruce not being a stoic, unfeeling asshole. instead, he's shown with the dry humor that a good batman writer knows is a staple of the character. he's teasing dick, telling him he'll basically whoop his ass if dick doesn't learn fast enough. it's incentive for dick to train harder, while also being lighthearted enough to tell dick that believes in dick and doesn't want him to push himself too hard.

gosh i love the titans. also it looks like wally's staring at dick's ass.

this was cute. a prod at dick's silly and playful sense of humor, while not dumbing him down for the sake of a laugh. instead, he's joking about food, which is stuff everyone jokes about. this is the kind of stuff that'll actually make me laugh, instead of just making me vaguely uncomfortable.

bludhaven's almost always portrayed as a cesspool of a city. and to be honest, it really is. but this panel gives the city a meaningful history, while also giving us a reason for why dick moved there.

it talks of a time when people still thought they could beat the monsters. that if they fought hard enough, they could win the fight. it was a tentative hope that you could always overcome hardship.

dick's little "i like that it's still standing" shows how he still believes that, despite what the rest of the world thinks. despite everything that he's been through, dick is still tentatively an optimist, and believes he can fight the monsters of the world and win. it's a beautiful testament to his character, and i'm like that they added his signature element of hope back in. it used to be what he symbolized as robin, and despite his growth and character arc from robin to nightwing, this is one aspect of robin that i'm glad nightwing still has.

Shooketh Dick: A Sequel

(the expressions in this series are just,,,,on point)

this was an incredibly sweet and kindhearted thing for dick to do, but i found it kind of,,,,,,,,desperate? maybe that's just me, but let me explain.

dick's suddenly a billionaire, and he has entirely too much money that he knows what to do with. it's also alfred's money, what the man left to him, so dick forever links it with alfred. in addition to that, he's back and bludhaven and looking at it with "fresh" eyes. (at least, from a different point of view since he got shot in the head. then mind controlled.) he's desperate to do something with the money and he's desperate to help the people around him that so obviously needs up, so he comes up with an on-the-fly solution that's a little impractical and a little crazy, but it still helps and still does some good.

to me, dick seems a little lost. he hasn't completely found his balance yet, and he's trying to do things that will. he tries charity, because that's what bruce did and it's what he knows, even though he admitted that he always thought bruce could have done more as bruce wayne than batman.

also, do i think that dick would ever actually get his wallet stolen?? no way in hell, he’d notice someone getting ready to pickpocket him a mile away. but i suppose it’s important to the Plot. 

okay this is getting interesting. first blockbuster, now maroni (+ the weird heart stealer guy). i can officially say that i am intruiged

this particular artistic quirk is shown a lot in this issue, and from this art team in general, but i feel like this panel is one of the best examples of it. it was stunning enough to take up a full page, and it’s well deserved.

the way they show dick moving is absolutely brilliant. as a reader, i like seeing these smaller versions of dick getting clearer and in more detail as they come closer to the screen. not only do they show depth in the picture beyond what a simple 3 dimensional piece of art does, it also shows the passage of time.

in addition, it showcases dick’s skill. dick spots these mobsters running after a group of petty thieves. he then, and follow me here, leaps off the roof of one building feet first, springboards backwards off the side of the adjacent building with his feet, gracefully continues his backflip, rights himself, shoots a line with perfect timing: just in time to soften his landing but not slow him down, execute said landing on top of a moving bus, keep running on the moving bus without missing a beat, shoot his grapple, use the grapple to swing, use the swing to build up momentum, then use the momentum to deliver a powerful blow to the mobsters. and he did all that fast enough to catch up with the mobsters, even though he was a ROOFTOP OVER.

this panel, the very first in the issue, is also another example of that art style, but a little more distinctive. i love the way they showed dick’s different costumes through the ages, along with him simply growing up. it’s a little heartbreaking, but a lot uplifting to see how far he’s come. thank god he got rid of the red. now all we need is the fingerstripes, and we’ll be golden

discowing my beloved. also i can’t clearly see discowing’s hair but it definitely looks like it’s pulled back. it looks like he put it in a ponytail. guys. guys. dick had a ponytail omg. 

he’s having a Hero Moment

are you talking about the city, dick, or are you talking about you? the kgbeast, the court, the joker. dick fell to each one of them, no matter how hard he fought. he won in the end, eventually and with his family’s help. but i think he’s feeling a little low, a little defeated right now. it’s almost like he needs a win, he needs to feel victorious, he needs to feel like he helped someone (hence the food and the hotel room), just because he needs to remember what it feels like.

these lines were supposed to resonate with you, and goddamn they did.

i looked at it from two ways. first, it’s the girl asking, begging nightwing not to hurt them. bludhaven doesn’t know dick the way gotham does, they’re still a little frightened of him. this child was brave enough to step in front of all of the other hurt and homeless kids and ask, to a strange man in a mask, if he was going to hurt them like the other men had. it’s heartbreaking, but commendable, and an echo of the city itself that dick’s decided to protect. they’re bloody and broken and terrified, but still gritty and brave enough to stare what they fear in the eye and ask it not to hurt them.

second, it’s dick seeing the question reflected in himself. recently, he got shot in the head and lost all his memories. while i think that the way ric reacted was a perfectly valid and human response to the situation, i think dick still regrets how callously and rudely he treated his family. then, he was manipulated by the court of owls, then he was brainwashed with a magic crystal by the joker. dick does have a guilt complex. it’s not a big as bruce’s, but it’s there. and right now, with this girl begging her not to hurt them, dick is probably thinking about all the times he hurt people, in control of his own actions or not, bc he “didn’t have a heart.”

in conclusion, i need more of her
