“good morning, sirius,” euphemia said, stepping into the living room with a cup of steaming tea in her hand. “have you slept well?” she asked, sitting down next to him, sighing as she did so.
“fine, yeah,” sirius replied, glancing over to the window for the fifth time already.
“nervous about getting your OWL results?” she asked. “because if so, i’m sure you did great. james says you’re very intelligent, and do great in school, so there is nothing you should worry about, really.”
“has he now?” he absentmindedly replied, fiddling with his hands.
euphemia placed a reassuring hand on his leg. “it’s going to be fine, sirius. and even if your grades will be lower than you expect them to be, that does not make you any less worthy of love, respect, or happiness. you’ll be able to do better in your next exams.”
sirius glanced at her, blinking as if he was a deer in the headlights.
“would you like a cup of tea?” euphemia asked, groaning as she sat up. “sorry,” she laughed quietly, “old age does that to a woman. fleamont says i’m as beautiful as i used to be years ago, though. raspberry?”
“sure,” sirius answered, looking over to her, putting on the kettle. “you’re a pretty woman, still.”
“thank you, darling,” she beamed, “i could say the same about you. you have definitely gotten good genes, and i can tell you that longer hair suits you very well.”
“thank you,” he smiled, the corners of his eyes crinkled, “it took me a while.”
“i can tell you are putting effort in it,” euphemia hummed, rummaging through the cupboard. “it looks very good, you know.”
“may i help you?” sirius asked, suddenly jumping off the couch and looking at her.
“oh, no, don’t worry, but thank you for the generous offer.” she smiled, waving a hand dismissively. “i will be back shortly, just need to let it settle and i will come back to you.”
sirius sat back down, although a bit reluctantly, and euphemia smiled. she was happy to finally have him there, to have him have someone who loves him right, like a mother is supposed to.
