Causes of IBS:
The exact cause of IBS is still unknown. However, several factors are known to trigger IBS symptoms, including:
Food intolerances: Certain foods such as dairy, wheat, and gluten may trigger IBS symptoms.
Stress: Emotional stress can also trigger IBS symptoms. It is believed that the gut-brain axis plays a significant role in the development of IBS symptoms.
Hormonal changes: Women are more likely to develop IBS, and hormonal changes during menstruation may exacerbate IBS symptoms.
Genetics: IBS tends to run in families, suggesting that genetics may play a role in the development of the condition.
Symptoms of IBS:
IBS symptoms differ from person to person, but the following are the most common:
Abdominal pain and cramping
Bloating
Gas
Diarrhea or constipation
Mucus in the stool
Urgency to have a bowel movement
Feeling of incomplete bowel movement
The severity of these symptoms may vary, and some people may experience mild symptoms, while others may have severe symptoms that significantly affect their quality of life.
Treatment options for IBS:
There is no cure for IBS, but several treatment options are available to manage symptoms, including:
Dietary changes: Avoiding trigger foods such as dairy, wheat, and gluten, and increasing fiber intake may help alleviate IBS symptoms.
Medications: Several medications are available to manage IBS symptoms, including laxatives, antidiarrheals, and antispasmodics.
Stress management: Relaxation techniques such as meditation, deep breathing, and yoga may help reduce stress and alleviate IBS symptoms.
Probiotics: Probiotics are live bacteria that can help improve gut health and alleviate IBS symptoms.
Counseling: Counseling may be helpful for people with severe IBS symptoms who experience anxiety or depression.
Alternative therapies: Some alternative therapies such as acupuncture and hypnotherapy may be helpful in alleviating IBS symptoms.
Conclusion:
IBS is a chronic condition that affects the large intestine, causing symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and changes in bowel habits. While the exact cause of IBS is unknown, several factors such as food intolerances, stress, hormonal changes, and genetics may trigger symptoms. Although there is no cure for IBS, several treatment options are available to manage symptoms, including dietary changes, medications, stress management, probiotics, counseling, and alternative therapies. If you are experiencing symptoms of IBS, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider for proper diagnosis and treatment.
Dr. Santhosh R's treatment approach for IBS involves a combination of dietary modifications, medications, and lifestyle changes. He focuses on identifying trigger foods that may exacerbate IBS symptoms and recommends a low FODMAP diet that can help alleviate symptoms. He also prescribes medications to manage symptoms such as abdominal pain, bloating, and diarrhea.
In addition to traditional treatment options, Dr. Santhosh R also offers alternative therapies such as probiotics, acupuncture, and hypnotherapy to help alleviate IBS symptoms. He believes in a holistic approach to healthcare and works with his patients to develop a comprehensive treatment plan that addresses their physical and emotional needs.
Overall, if you are struggling with Irritable Bowel Syndrome, Dr. Santhosh R is the best gastroenterologist in Bangalore to consult. He can help you control your symptoms and enhance your quality of life with his knowledge and compassion.

Hey, this is kind of a niche question, but I was wondering if you might have an answer for it. Do you think it’s feasible for someone with IBD to work regularly as a field archaeologist? Also, thank you for your wonderful blog I love seeing people on here post about archaeology
Hmm, this is an interesting question. I don't have IBD so I'll just preface my answer by saying that whatever I say should be taken in that context.
I think the majority of your success will depend on what your symptoms are, and if/how you can manage them. Maybe that means taking more frequent bathroom breaks than the rest of the crew, taking more medication, or going on a special diet for field season.
Those are all preemptive things that you can do, but while you're in the field you might also look into ways that you can mitigate your symptoms. If you're not near a bathroom but still fairly close to civilization, maybe you could arrange for a port-a-john so that you have more privacy. If it's a hike in/hike out situation you could look into a portable toilet?
I think that before taking this on, you should talk to both your field supervisor and your doctor to make sure that all the right things are done, and so that hopefully you don't end up in an uncomfortable situation. Other than that, I don't really see why it should prevent you from going into the field. People work with stomach bugs (because sometimes you just gotta soldier through) and if they can work, you can probably find a way.
Best of luck (and please tell me if you end up going on a dig!)
-Reid

My body really does prefer “Low Carb. High Fat”-type diets. I first tried it out during the summer of 2011 and I hadn’t anticipated how my body would react to it. It allowed me to easily decrease my meal-sizes which in turn made it easier to eat more often. I probably don’t have enough gastrointestinal issues to consider IBS but it causes me enough discomfort that I could clearly tell a difference when I excluded most carbohydrates.
Today I would want to try out pushing for a proper ketogenic diet but I currently don’t find myself having the time nor energy to make that work wholly on my own. I’ve asked my physician and obesity team for support in this but it’s not part of their rendered services (was thinking either could refer me to a dietitian). Would a meal-prep.-and-delivery service pop up where I live offering a keto-option I’ll probably do it.
This plate of food is very LCHF and something I could have eaten in 2011, albeit a smaller portion. I still eat meals like it because they are quick to do, contains all my preferred foodstuffs and gives me a boost. To be specific it’s medium-rare strip steak with salt and pepper, cherry tomatoes sauteed with some vinegar and kale sauteed with butter, a runny sunny-side-up egg and some cheap feta off a block. Cooked and weighed in less than 20 min, enough for me to last a whole day (even though I try and avoid that).

Low FODMAP easy and delicious Brownies
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ingredients:
100 grams (1/2 cup) granulated sugar
2.5 tablespoons (35 grams) unsalted butter. Butter is naturally lactose free/low in lactose, but I use a special certified lactose free butter due to high lactose sensitivity.
1 egg plus 1 egg yolk, cold
1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract (fresh from the bean or a pack of vanilla sugar works too)
1/3 cup (35 grams) cocoa powder (I use a mix that already contains sugar)
3 tbsp vegetable oil
1/4 cup (30grams) all-purpose flour
A pinch of baking soda
1 tsp cornstarch
A pinch of salt
Chocolate, as much as you want (Dark chocolate is usually lactose free, for milk chocolate you need to find a lactose free one)
Pecan nuts, as much as you want (or others like walnut), broken up into smaller pieces
Steps:
Preheat the oven to 160°C/320°F. Line a baking form with wax baking paper and spray with nonstick cooking spray, or use cupcake forms.
Melt butter in a microwave safe bowl by microwaving for around 30s at 800W. Butter should be mostly melted when you remove the bowl from the microwave, then just stir to melt it completely.
Add in the sugar. Then whisk in the eggs, egg yolk, and vanilla.
Stir in oil and cocoa powder.
In a separate bowl, combine the solids; stir in the flour, baking soda, cornstarch, and salt until combined. Then add the solids to the liquids.
Stir in the chocolate chips and nut mixture
Pour the brownie batter evenly into the prepared pan or cupcake forms. Scrape the remaining batter with a rubber spatula.
Place in the middle of the oven and bake for 15-20 minutes, then use a toothpick to check the brownies. They should be set (not moving around if you rock the pan) and the toothpick should be mostly clean with some crumbs sticking to it. Bake the brownies for up to 30 minutes, until this is achieved.
Place the brownies on a cooling rack, then cut and serve warm with vanilla ice-cream or completely cooled as a yummy dessert.
Brownies can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for around a week, or at room temperature for 3-4 days.
