WIP Wednesday

Stevie and Patrick exchange a look. Then Stevie nods. She turns back to David, takes a deep breath and says, “I’m moving out.”

It feels like a physical blow. David stands frozen for a second. Then he takes a gasping breath and accepts the glass of wine Stevie hands him. He downs half of it.

“I think it’s time,” she says.

David nods and focuses on breathing and tries to fight the tears. He tries to be strong and supportive for his friend. He knows she’s right. It’s time. But still:

Stevie knew him in the time before. She was the only one who didn’t bat an eye when he pulled out his black card. She was the only one in his life who had no idea why his clothes mattered, but seemed to know that he himself did.

From day one, she cut through his bullshit and accepted all the parts of him that were the most difficult to love.

She was the only one who stood beside him when he lost everything. She gave him a place to live and she even paid his rent (a couple times). For four years, Stevie has always been by his side. He loves Patrick, so much, but Stevie is different. David never realized how much he needed a best friend. He didn’t realize how much he needs her around.

He’s not ready for that to change.

“Ugh. Sorry,” he says, wiping his face with the side of his hand, “I know. This is a good thing. And you’re right, it’s time. You should have your own place. I just… I’m gonna miss you.”

Stevie momentarily recoils at the sincerity. An instinctual reaction. Then she launches herself at him and holds him tight. David holds her back. They stand like that in the kitchen for a long time. Then Stevie steps out of the hug and the three of them move to the living room.

When I was younger and researching the autism diagnosis criteria and symptoms, I thought “oh I couldn’t POSSIBLY be autistic.” Because when I read “takes everything literally” I thought it literally meant EVERYTHING and I was like “I don’t take EVERYTHING literally, just most things!” And I just realized the other day that it didn’t actually mean EVERYTHING and that was an overstatement.

ADHD pro tip: Use psychological warfare on yourself.

For example, in order to do long tasks, like folding laundry, I put on the Mario Hat:

The main feature of the Mario hat is that my headset does not fit over it, so when The Bees™ try to put me back in front of the screen, the headset issue forces me to remember why I put the Mario hat on, and back to the task I go

As a bonus, the Mario hat is also a very clear indicator to my housemates that business is getting done, and they have learned not to distract me when I'm wearing the "goofy-ass cosplay hat"

People underestimate how much it fucks you up to be subtly excluded as a kid. I would try to talk to my classmates and be met with disinterest or annoyance. The one friend I had, who I clung to and nodded along to his every word, had other friends he liked just as much or more. And his other friends didn’t care for me at all.

I look back at pictures from the time and see how separated I was from them. I remember knowing I was different. I remember posing questions about the world to the girls playing next to me and realizing that they had never asked the same ones to themselves. That the ways we thought couldn’t be more different.

I kept myself amused with my own fanatical stories and musings in my head. I would wander the playground on a circular path, imagining a friend and being sorely disappointed when it didn’t feel as real as I’d hoped.

There was a bubble separating me from everyone else, thin, and nearly invisible, but with a pearly sheen you could catch under the right conditions. I knew it was there, they knew it was there, and it changed me

ADHD at night: I could write a book. I could get my Master’s Degree. I could go to the club and come home with 12 new friends. I could get a job at that club and meet the mother of my children. I could cure every disease and use my wealth to bring world peace.
