When I first read Fahrenheit 451, I remember thinking “people actually memorized entire novel length books?”
But here’s the thing.
Sometimes, it happens. Sometimes, it’s necessary.
You know what happens when a government regime doesn’t like the message of a book? They ban it, they burn it, they stop it from reaching their people. Especially religious books.
I’m a Bahá’í, I was lucky enough to be born in the United States, and to be White. However, the motherland of my faith is… less than accepting, shall we say, of my fellows still within her borders. There was a push to get as many of our people out as possible before it became impossible for a while, and even today, people are still describing it as “escaping” their homeland when they leave. A friend of mine, who was in high school when the current regime took over, back when he still lived there, memorized one of our holy books in the original language, because there was serious question as to whether the books would be allowed to continue existing. He memorized that book with a few friends, while his other friends memorized some of the others—we have a lot—and he still has it memorized, now this his sons are older than he was then. He could recite the whole thing.
I believe this has happened before. I hope it will not be needed again, but I fear it will be.
Sometimes, the quiet resistance of memorization is what someone can manage. Sometimes we can do more, or other things, but memorizing completely banned books, saving them in our minds so we can share them again once others have forgotten, that is invaluable.
And it is impressive.
Fahrenheit 451 was a warning, based on things Bradbury could see as potentially happening, and based on things that had happened.
I don’t think we can afford to roll our eyes and ignore it.

The earthspark tarantulas/nightshade discourse is stupid as hell and hilarious
FBI 911 CIA??? Yes there are people SHIPPING a robot child with a robot adult!! No no, you see the robot is a child because it was born from magic cave goop!! No it doesn’t look like a child it looks like a metal owl!! No the adult is a spider!!! Please you have to arrest them all or the world will end !!!!
Also it’s doubly weird in the context of popular canon ship tailgate/cyclonus, tailgate is canonically 2 weeks old mentally and outright represented as a baby (btw tailgate/cyclonus 10/10 ship anyway because people are smart enough to recognize his infancy isn’t literal)
Anyway they’re alien robots why does this matter

This comment made me shift my perspective on Zelda, no joke. I’ve always been annoyed (and still am) that there isn’t a game where you actually play as Zelda, but this does a nice job of showing WHY she’s always getting attacked first, and why Ganon/Demise are always defeated not long after Link reunites with her: she’s the true source of power to defeat them.

not really a modern au but more like a weird future timeline thing where beach hermit maglor Hibernates™ all through the 2nd and 3rd ages & misses the last boats to Valinor.... thus resulting in him skulking about history until he ends up living among modern day humans haha?? the kicker is that he one day finds an abandoned baby thats all-too-suspiciously like a certain dead brother and becomes a single dad-younger brother-adopted guardian person...
i wrote a few pages of this back in 2022 but never really thought abt it further after i started posting less frequently hahaha.... heres just some feel good domestic sketches of this AU bc i miss drawing modern clothes 🤭 i have sooo many thoughts about it that i couldnt fit into these doodles !! its quite a lot of yapping so feel free to skip past the cut haha
Tumblr media Tumblr media
assorted au thoughts:
i planned for maglor to eventually find all 6 of his brothers one by one through the power of Accidental Child Acquisition ✨ example: he'd spot a kid lurking around some woods near his home and eventually realise said wild child living amongst stray dogs is a bit too similar to celegorm
i just couldnt fit in the time to draw that this round... maybe next time!
though he's raising reincarnated-Maedhros, i think it makes more sense for him to give him a modern name and not explicitly call him Nelyo/Maitimo/Russandol just bc he'd not want to get his own hopes up or shove said identity onto the kid
(the occasional 'hey Nelyo' does slip out by accident from time to time however)
i think as Mae-the-kid grows up he will in time start to remember bits and pieces of his original identity? with the nicer familial things (like valinor, his brothers, feanor and nerdanel) first, and then the darker things (kinslayings, angband, war) once he's grown up that Maglor will struggle explaining or even helping him through
i promise this is a wholesome au 😭
side characters include a high-strung but good guy policeman named Officer Borden who's very suspicious of Maglor bc of all the random kids he keeps adopting.... and his younger brother Farren, who happens to be Maglor's scholarly coworker
as well as Maglor's next door neighbour Morgan, a witch-woman married to some guy named Hugh... she's got 3 kids who visit from time to time but from what Maglor's heard, the oldest son is followed by misfortune and has supposedly never met his youngest sister...?
credit to Ted Nasmith and Cartoon Network for some assets used in the doodles :D

my brain: zoro says he doesn't believe in god but he's been luffy's first and most devoted follower since the day they met. he was a wandering bounty hunter with no actual way of achieving his goal until he met luffy, who had nothing to offer but his dreams and a place in his nonexistent pirate crew. and zoro, who had every reason to cut him down, instead let himself be led by nothing but two rubbery hands and a too-big smile. zoro was the first person to ever call luffy "pirate king"; not future king of the pirates, the pirate king, and he did so as he dedicated his first huge defeat to luffy and has been doing the same for every victory that's followed. he's the most quiet in his affections but his loyalty can never ever be questioned because while he's willing to lay his life down for his captain, it's his willingness to live for luffy that shows how much he understands what his captain needs from him. he may call luffy an idiot and complain about having boarded the wrong ship but no one can deny that the boy who went out of his way to ask demand that he join his crew has become zoro's true north.
me, hitting tweet: zoro suck luffy good and hard thru his jorts
