Love At First Sight (2023)

Okay, we’re going to talk about the new Netflix romance directed by Vanessa Caswill, Love At First Sight, because I’m seeing almost no chatter about it and that cannot stand. Full disclosure, I’ve never read the book on which this movie is based, The Statistical Probability of Love at First Sight, so I’m reacting only to the film (which I’ve now seen 4.5 times in 2 days).

The Surface Reading

It’s a perfect, tight, adorable little RomCom that’s heavy on the Rom and light on the Com, with a wrenching dash of angst and the most hair-twirling chemistry between two leads that has graced our screens in years. Truly, if all you want is 90 minutes of two actors being saccharine precious cinnamon rolls, look no further!

There are simple takeaways here, like that chance can only take you so far, but in the end you have to choose to love. Or that change and loss are part of life and you can’t run from them. Or that London is a massive labyrinth of eccentric people that probably looks 400% cooler onscreen than it is in reality (I wouldn’t know, I’ve never visited, so this and the 90s Parent Trap are the extent of my knowledge about the city, sorry).

Anyway, I adored how straightforward the story was - that the narrator (played brilliantly by Jameela Jamil) tells you directly in the first two minutes that it’s a story about love, fate, and statistics. She then repeatedly describes every development as it is happening, the characters’ histories and internal monologues, and all the context you need to follow the thin but fast-paced plot. The writing, performances, and production design are all solid, allowing the audience to get lost in the romance as it unfolds.

BUT if you’re slightly unhinged like I am and you’re always looking for more layers in your media, HAVE NO FEAR! There is in fact more going on in this little movie than you might expect.

Color Theory

For starters, the use of red and green in the film is fascinating. Yes, I realize the action of the story takes place a few days before Christmas, so you might assume it was just a seasonal aesthetic choice, but if you look closer, you can see very carefully selected shades of red and green repeating throughout the film. The red is a cool, deep rose color, sometimes pink, while the green is cool and dark, like oxidized bronze rather than emerald. Further, while they appear over and over, these hues are rarely used in a purely decorative or festive way. Instead, they play a role in the separation and coming together of the couple. On a color wheel, red and green are complements, perfect opposites that are never adjacent but always joined in the middle.

The title card during Hadley’s introduction is literally a green stripe over a red stripe, then the hallways of the airport are green, and of course Hadley’s ever-important backpack is a rosy red. As the couple grow closer on their flight, the light turns pink. Once in London, a green van takes Oliver one way while a red taxi takes Hadley the other. At her father’s wedding, Hadley is dressed in red (“the color of a bruise” she calls it), contrasting beautifully against her green jacket. Upon realizing Oliver’s true purpose, she chases after him on an iconic red double-decker bus. Meanwhile at the living memorial, Oliver’s father is dressed in red while his mother wears a faded green, as if to say she is already beginning to fade away. The event is decorated with green drapery and streamers, and there are even stacks of red and green chairs in the stairwell where Oliver begs his mother to receive treatment.

Hadley gifts her red and green bouquet to Tessa, and when she is driven away, a green-clad narrator returns the red backpack to Oliver. Wandering London alone, Hadley exchanges her painful red heels for a pair of green trainers (“sneakers!” she insists), and tries to call her dad first in a red phone booth and then on a phone from a stranger sitting in a cluster of red chairs. Finally, Oliver chooses to pursue Hadley to the wedding reception which is lit in pink, and where they finally share the long-awaited kiss.

There are many more examples, but in general we see that green indicates separation and loss, while red symbolizes joining, intimacy, and (what else?) love! It lends the film a gorgeous, subtle aesthetic without being garishly festive, and shows the lovers’ emotional journey from lonely childhood to vulnerable, loving adulthood.

Death and Rebirth

Speaking of which, there’s plenty of rebirth imagery too! When Hadley and Oliver meet, they are both still children, struggling with the impending loss of parental security through divorce and death. Thus, when they board the plane, it is as if they enter an underworld or womb, separated from their families and remade as new adults. They emerge on the other side into a hallway (read: birth canal), as each must still confront their own dying childhood before they can join as full and equal partners. Hadley journeys to a bright, red-strewn celebration of life, while Oliver must enter a dark green commemoration of death, his fear driving him deeper to hide in another hallway. Here his mother comes to find him, begging him to emerge into life, but Ollie still can’t confront her death alone.

Thankfully, Hadley travels to this underworld to find him, bursting into the memorial like a bright red flower. Even the bruise metaphor works, acknowledging the pain they are both experiencing at the changes in their lives. But Oliver still refuses to face his fears, trying to take a shortcut around death to life with Hadley. Still, she knows he’s not ready (likely because she’s not yet, either), and gently pushes back. And so, Oliver returns to the underworld, and Hadley walks off alone until she descends barefoot through a soggy riverside tunnel (birth canal again!). Finally, she calls her father and admits she is “lost.” When he arrives, Hadley at last gathers the courage to ask why he ended their old life, and to tell him how much it hurt her. But as Oliver predicted, she forgives her dad and even begins to accept his new bride.

Back at the memorial, Oliver is reminded by Hadley’s red backpack - his unaddressed emotional baggage - to be honest about his pain. In at last openly mourning his mother and his own childhood, Ollie takes a step into adulthood, just enough for his family to nudge him that extra bit to go after Hadley. And so, the family delivers him to his bride, who has meanwhile learned to dance again, even through her heartbreak. With one last confession, the two consummate their love with a kiss, bathed in pink light before an open door.

Happily Ever After

There’s so much more, with the hand-holding, numbers, Shakespeare, Dickens, the music, and beyond, but the point is that this cute, charming little romance is actually very deliberately constructed. It follows timeless patterns and motifs which we instinctively understand through visual and auditory language. And the narration plays a huge role in this as well, not unlike the prologues and epilogues of the Bard’s plays in that they state the story’s lessons plainly: that we cannot always be prepared for unwelcome surprises, but that we can make the choice to love every day.

Anyway, Vanessa Caswill deserves all the flowers and if you haven’t seen her gorgeous adaptation of Little Women (with all due respect to the marvelous Greta Gerwig and Gillian Armstrong), please do yourself a favor and watch that after you finish this!

Kree: Back at home, there was a secret war between 2 organizations.

Kree: 1 that are full of rotten kids that wanted to rule the world and dethrone the law and order of the ruling of the adults.

Kree: They are 12 and under.

Kree: And the other is that to prevent those brats to takeover.

Kree: They are 13 and up, even the elderly ones.

Kree: It’s very complicated, I used to be in the bad team with my little sister but because when I gotten older, I had realized that responsibilities were very important and the adults were right to be in charge.

Kree: So I switched sides, in order to erase the dark side of my childhood past. At a few times on my birthdays as a teen, I been inviting people to my party for 2 years.

Kree: But nobody came both years but my parents because they loved me, one day I found out that the naughty children were behind that, by delaying my birthday invite letters from the mail.

Kree: Even my little sister who had gotten under their influence, I was really miserable that my sister would do this do me, her older sibling!

Kree: They been blackmailing me and others for their own amusement, they made me eat terrible nasty candy for whole a year.

Kree: Ever since that, I HATED sweets.

Kree: And now, I don’t care about her, she’s dead to me.

Kree: And my parents are part of the justice organization too.

*Flashback*

[Port Jubilee, Kree’s home, living room]

15 Year Old Kree: I can’t believe she would do this to me. Mom, I’m sorry again about being in the wrong side before when I was little.

Kree’s Mom: I know sweetie, but I couldn’t believe they torment you like that.

15 Year Old Kree: Surely you can do something about it, you can ground her, right?

Kree’s Mom: Well, yes I can but she had left us.

15 Year Old Kree: What?!

Kree’s Mom: She at least put a goodbye note, she’s now gone and going to live with those awful children.

Kree’s Mom: So I’m afraid that there’s nothing I can do about it.

15 Year Old Kree: *Sighs* True, I swear, one day, they all will be going down.

*End of flashback*

Kree: I wasn’t satisfied with the love from my parents, because it wasn’t enough love for me.

Kree: I have honestly grew a colossal desire for more love, respect and support.

Kree: I admit to be very honest, I am having with a lot of insecurities.

Kree: I presume that those awful kids have been recruiting children all around the world for their takeover.

Kree: So I must stop their schemes, and so, if I become a hero that my secret society and the world needed.

Kree: An hero alike my favorite, the Sorcerer of the Sands, one of the Great 7, then I’ll have all that I ever wanted.

Kree: Speaking of heroes, when I play cops and robbers with the other kids, I always get to be the robber, always.

Kree: I do wanted to be a cop in cops and robbers, but I never get to be one of the heroes in the game.

Kree: One day during the summer while I was 15, surprisedly, a certain prince of his loyal family from another land came up, and joined the crew.

*Flashback*

[The Secret Justice Organization Lair]

Leona: Hey, all of you.

15 Year Old Kree and all the members of the Adult Justice Organization: Wait, LEONA KINGSCHOLAR?!

Leona: That’s right, and I know about both sides.

Leona: And I want to join yours.

Leona: I did noticed your war against those brats all over the world. I’m aware of my surroundings and that I hear from a long distance.

Leona: You know how lion beastmen work.

Leona: I know everything, your secrets of the war and your organization are safe with me.

Leona: And you, with the black dreadlocks and the brown skin teen, come with me, we’ll have a nice talk.

15 Year Old Kree: Me? Um, Mom, Dad, is it okay?

Kree’s Mom & Dad: Yes.

Kree’s Dad: Anywho, I have to go to my job, stay safe everyone.

*End of flashback*

Kree: I haven’t had know idea why he wanted to have a private talk, I didn’t know until…

*Flashback*

[The Secret Justice Organization Lair, hallway]

Leona: I did noticed you were being suffered so much, because of those brats.

15 Year Old Kree: You got that right.

15 Year Old Kree: Wait… how?

Leona: While the headmaster of Night Raven College sent me and some of the Housewardens to receive some stuff for Halloween at school.

Leona: While they were busy, I took a nap in the woods, then hear some crying, it ruined my sleep.

Leona: I followed the noise and saw you.

Leona: On October 8th, last year..

15 Year Old Kree: So.. you just wanted to meet me?

Leona: Yes, that’s why I came here on Summer Break, I’ll be back to my home.

Leona: And since you hated your little sister, I too loathe a little relative.

Leona: And he’s annoying for a nephew.

Leona: So, since you’re suffering by those brats, I want you to become friends with me.

Leona: Sounds good?

15 Year Old Kree: Heck yeah! And I do wanted to attend to Night Raven College!

Leona: Alright, and I don’t care if we’re not going to be in the same dorm together.

*End of flashback*

Kree: He and I became best friends since we met, because we understood each other, and we now sometimes text each other for a few times.

Kree: And some members of the organization were also from the same school as he is, then a few days later…

Kree: I had been invited to attend NRC.

Kree: On September 1st, the Entrance Ceremony and my first day of school.

Kree: I already missed my parents back home and I’m still angry at those brats.

Kree: But I’m glad to be away from THEM.

Kree: The very same day that Yuu, a magicless human from another world came to our world.

Kree: I thought it was super unusual even beyond the entire universe! When around the Spelldrive tournament came around October, the same month that my birthday is in.

Kree: I thought I would be celebrating all alone in that day because of the big event but…

Kree: While on that day in a shock.

Kree: I was glad that people had celebrated my 16th birthday, I was having tears of joy and had fun.

Kree: Never I had so many of them celebrating it, I was very happy.

Kree: But yet, I still feel empty within me.

Kree: I did sharpen my skills for the big game, and I was surprised that Leona went Overblot after the Housewarden of Heartslabyul, Riddle Rosehearts.

*Flashback*

[Interior hallway]

Brian: I couldn’t believe that there are 2 Overblots during our first year of school.

Conner: Indeed, first my Housewarden and now Leona.

Brian: And Diasomnia won, I guess they should’ve benched Malleus.

Conner: And now it’ll be time for the final exams on November.

Conner: So, be prepared Brian.

Brian: I will, and thanks for the reminder!

*End of flashback*

Kree: When me and my dorm members couldn’t return to our homes because of Kalim during Winter Break, I admit, the training methods he used were awful as those kids!

Kree: My parents were very worried about me!

*Flashback*

[Scarabia Dorm, Kree’s Room (Night, Lights On)]

Kree’s Mom on phone: I can’t believe your Housewarden would do this! He should be ashamed of himself!

Kree’s Dad on phone: I guess it’s true that appearances can be deceiving.

Kree: Yep. And there’s nothing we can do about it due the fact that he’s from a wealthy family.

Kree: And hey, at this rate, he’ll be kicked out of the school.

Kree: Let’s just wait til the dorm is going to usurp him.

Kree’s Dad on phone: You’re right, but only time will tell.

Kree’s Mom on phone: After all, patience is a virtue.

Kree: Agree, goodnight.

*The phone hung up*

Kree: Alright, time to sleep now. Man, I hope Kalim will get his comeuppance soon.

*End of flashback*

Kree: I didn’t know that Jamil hypnotized Kalim at the time, and boy, my bones hurt for a long time after the training torture.

Kree: Then at the day of Lilia’s farewell party.

Kree: Malleus put us all in a deep slumber, if it wasn’t for Idia, we all be sleeping for 10,000 years.

Kree: And we all could’ve die too.

*Flashback*

[Diasomnia Dorm Lounge]

Malleus: I, the Lord of Malevolence, offer this blessing. Fae Of Maleficence.

Lilia: MALLEUUUS!!!

*End of flashback*

Kree: It then went completely black.

*Flashback*

[Scarabia Dorm, Hallway (Night)]

Kalim: Man, I thought Malleus would get kicked out of the school for sure.

Jamil: And now he’s taken to S.T.Y.X.

Berry: Yeah, and I believe that there’s now another reason for people to NOT invite Malleus to parties.

Kree: For once, I agree with you.

Jamil: He’ll back in a few days and I heard Lilia and the Headmage requested the Shrouds to teach him about our common sense and everything.

Jamil: Not to mention giving Malleus a phone that he can’t break.

Kalim: Sounds good! Hahahahaha! Alright, let’s hope everyone gets good sleep tonight.

Kree: Um, Kalim? Did you just forget about what Malleus just did to all of us?

Jamil: You’re right, I don’t think any of us and everyone in the school are going to sleep for a while.

Berry: Seriously.

Kalim: Agree, but we do need to save our energy.

Jamil: True, I suppose we should use some alarm clocks.

Kree: I am going to have nightmares about what Malleus did, probably forever.

Kree: Man, I wished that he gets expelled.

Jamil: I don’t blame you, but let’s rest for tomorrow.

Kree: Sure, I guess.

*End of flashback*

Kree: Then on a weekend after Malleus’s Overblot.

Kree: While that vile monster is away which is good, I had a visit by that partying, candy loving fox.

Kree: Who very much disliked.

*Flashback*

[Scarabia Dorm, Kree’s Room]

*Knocking*

Kree: Hold on.

*Opens the door*

Berry: Hey Kree.

Kree: What do you want? Can’t you see I’m adjusting my bed?

Berry: I guess you’re still struggling to sleep because of what Malleus did.

Kree: (Angry) *Growls* Don’t mention that name.

Berry: Anyway, our Housewarden is going to throw a party! Yeah!

Kree: And?

Berry: He sent me to ask if you want to join.

Berry: And he told me that I can use my unique magic to bring out the food and give Jamil a break!

Berry: Are you in?

Kree: No thank you.

Berry: Can I at least give you something?

Kree: *Sighs* Fine, some Orange Juice, without your Unique Magic, that’s all.

Berry: Alright, coming right up.

Kree: *Sighs*

*End of flashback*

Kree: Ever since Malleus’s Overblot, I am now afraid of sleeping for a very long time.

Kree: Haven’t I suffered enough?

Kree: Because of that MONSTER, I couldn’t sleep well at all, I wished upon the stars every night that he’ll be gone for good, for everyone’s sake.

Kree: And I just wanted to be the hero that the world needed against those bugging brats and that demon.

Kree: I always wanted to be a hero, and get to be a cop in cops and robbers, at least for one time.

Kree: That’s why I wanted my plan to bring karma and justice against them to succeed, just to end the war once and for all to protect the world from THEM, but why can’t those annoying kids learn to take their place?

Kree: Why the Headmage didn’t expelled HIM?

Kree: And deep down, I thought once the war ended, I could be reunited with my sister and reformed her.

Kree: Those brats needed to go, but…

Kree: Malleus is awful as them!

Kree: I wanted to get rid of him too!

Kree: Because he is a walking disaster that only brings doom to people!

Kree: But why I’m still plain unappreciated?

Kree: Why is this pain still in my heart?

Kree: Why do I still feel so empty?

Kree: Why do I feel so worthless?

Kree: Why can’t my wishes ever come true?

Kree: Why?

Kree: Why?

Kree: WHY?!

Kree: I guess I have to face the facts.

Kree: I am not a hero.

Kree: I am nothing but a zero.

Leona: Kree! Wake up!

Bruh, I am prolly slow on the uptake, but I'm realizing that, considering their magic is heavily influenced by imagination, it's no WONDER Kalim's magic, especially his defensive magic, is so weak.

Because he's always had everything handed to him or done for him by others, especially Jamil, of course his imagination would never compare. Bc he's never HAD to long for anything, never had to think of anything for himself besides what he was told/given, outside certain circumstances!

Is it a wonder he was able to manifest his magic at an age when Jamil was attending another school away from him? When Kalim himself WANTED to and tried so HARD at something, likely for the first time in his life, to manifest his magic to be JUST LIKE Jamil?

Tbh, the best thing that ever happened to Kalim was not really Jamil. Bc incidentally, the way they were raised, it only served to limit Kalim both in life experiences and magic, having Jamil do everything for Kalim. He never needed to work on honing his magic when Jamil could take care of potions, when Jamil could defend him and take the brunt of the grunt work.

Thus, the best possible thing to have happened to Kalim really having to make his own friends outside of him at Night Raven. Like when he used Oasis Maker to entertain Crowley with excellent control and skill ( likely something he learned to do for shows with the Pop Music Club, I bet! ). Or how when he had to make a party without Jamil's help, Ruggie let him learn how to cook with only using magic and the food STILL turned out to be a hit despite it being Kalim's first shot at it! Or how he was able to surprise Jamil by making the river to bring Octavinelle, himself and Yuu'n Grim back to Scarabia after the boy'd dismissed his Signature Spell as useless.

📽️ Love at First Sight (2023)

I watched this on the plane ride home from my cousin’s wedding, and I really liked it! I actually liked it so much that I was convinced the book had to be that much better and bought the book (still have yet to read it btw). I liked how gentle yet passionate this movie was. I also liked that it was romantic without being spicy. It’s a relaxing, enjoyable watch. I’d definitely watch it again and can’t wait to see how close it is to the book.

Sex/nudity: 1/10 (kissing)

Language: 3/10 (one f word, very mild otherwise)

Violence: 0/10 (none that I remember)

Overall rating: 8/10

"dude, it's so absolutely perfect. it's like, you in ring form. tell me again how he proposed?" of course, he had heard it all. many times. but he knew jasper loved to tell the story and jamil wanted to see that smile on his best friends face. he could be told it a hundred times more, if it brought jasper this much joy.

- Honestly had zero reason for being at Ramshackle- he just wanted to see you! 😄

- He did knock, because he's polite, but when you didn't answer, and he realized the door was unlocked, and he just wanted to check on you and make sure everything was okay!

- And in a similar fashion as with Floyd- one minute you're singing and dancing as you clean, and the next you're spinning around with Kalim as he takes your hands and starts dancing with you- wearing the most excited smile ever.

- The moment you stop singing- startled by his arrival- he will absolutely pout a bit and beg you to continue and praise your voice like it just cured overblot- he's smitten with it, and with you.

- That said, if you were hoping to keep your singing a secret- I'm sorry, but he's telling everyone. Not on purpose of course! He's just so excited and loves your voice so much that he won't be able to stop talking about it with literally anyone and everyone.

- He'll honestly try to keep quiet about it, but the second he shows up for his next Pop Music Club meeting he will guaranteeably let it slip to Lilia and Cater how awesome your voice is and that you should join the club with them! And once Cater knows- well- it's safe to assume everybody knows now.

- Seven help poor Jamil who will have to listen to him rant about you even more than he does now because of this.

- And Seven help poor you when Jamil shows up at Ramshackle in a panic looking for Kalim who snuck off without him to see you and he finds you both just dancing and singing without a care in the world.

"You should joint the pop music club! Oh- and come sing at some of the parties we have at Scarabia! Pretty, pretty please? You sound so amazing!"

Jamil Viper - "Fire On Fire" by Sam Smith

- Went to Ramshackle to drop off some left over food for you from one of Kalim's parties and actually had the decency to knock and then also text you to see if you were home when you didn't answer.

- You, however, were very lost in the music and didn't notice your phone go off. So, when Jamil noticed the door was unlocked, the bodyguard instinct of 'a door that should be locked is unlocked, that's suspicious' kicked in, and he decided to check on you, because you should be home, right?

- Unless you're out with your other friends. A thought that totally doesn't give him any weird envy or jealousy related feelings.

- He can't help but instantly relax when he hears you voice echoing in the halls when he makes his way upstairs- relieved. Then mildly ticked that you left your front door unlocked- do you know how unsafe that is? Someone could have broke in! (you mean like you just did bro?)

- He follows the sound of your voice to you and Grim's shared room and takes a moment outside the door to listen as you sing the passionate song nearly perfectly.

- You do have a lovely voice, and that song is... He's never heard anything like it before, so he assumes it's possibly from your world.

- Where you singing it about someone? The idea sends two very different and equally overwhelming emotions piercing his chest and churning his stomach.

- Jealousy and hope.

- He swallows down those feelings and works up the nerve to knock on the bedroom door, startling you out of your little performance, and turning to see him watching you with an unreadable expression, but a slight flush to his face.

- And then you greet him with a shy, slightly embarrassed smile and dear seven, are you trying to kill him? He'll complement your voice with as much composure as he can, very tempted to pry and ask more about it and who you where singing it for

- Seven, what have you done to him? Making him feel these things and have these thoughts... Can't you just be like every other normal annoyance in his life?

"I'm sorry for intruding- the door was unlocked, which is incredibly unsafe... But you... You sounded nice... You should sing more often."
