Merlin leads a relatively content life - or as content as is possible under the rule of a magic-hating King. When the arrogant son of said magic-hating King starts becoming a regular at his coffee shop, Merlin is a little puzzled. When said Prince prat then proceeds to ingest a love potion on Merlin's watch that results in him having to move into the Royal Palace as Prince Arthur's (fake) boyfriend, Merlin wonders which deity he has angered. Things only get more complicated from there.

“Welcome to The Drip and Grind, what can I get for you?" “The same thing I always have,” Prince Arthur says, sounding vaguely disdainful and unbearably posh. “One would think you’d remember my order by now." Merlin scowls. He remembers His Haughtiness’ order perfectly well, but sees no reason to inflate an already unbearably large ego. “You’re not my only customer,” Merlin keeps his voice coolly polite; barely. “You realise that’s not the proper way to address me?” And is that a smirk at the corner of the stupid prat’s, stupidly gorgeous mouth? “Apologies, your High-and-Mightiness. Now do you think you can tell me your order or must I divine it from my crystal ball?”

HIII my god I am a huge fan of all your fics, I have gone through just about every one of them besides the book of merthur (still trudging through that one I fear.........) and the way you encapsulate arthur's horrible mommy issues is the best I have seen of it. Sometimes I try my best to find some merthur fics and I don't recall seeing that part of Arthur EVER explored (to be a little more fair the show was shit at doing that too..... but come on if you truly love arthur you're obligated to fuck his life over some more ☝️.) Making Hunith essentially adopt him is so endearing to me as well I really just love what you're doing.

This is just out of curiosity because I've seen with most of your fics you've kept balinor out of the picture, and I'd really love to know your thoughts about him (bad thoughts and/or good thoughts I am all for toxicity and hate 🙏). I think I like the concept of him more than the shows portrayal of him, I have in the past found deleted scenes and concepts that kept more references to him???? And that was for Arthur too with his mother???? That is quite up there for me for some of the worst things the show has done to me. Anyway. Again I like the idea of him, haven't personally found fics that portray him that caught my eye (how do you make the title 'dragonlord' so lame. it has DRAGONS to it. I should've immediately been all for him) I'd love to have your thoughts :)))

The show was shit at most things characterisation, to be fair. lmao But, yeah, I agree, I think Arthur's parental issues are central to who he is. He has a mother he never got to meet and therefore idolizes because a dead mother is a perfect mother; and then his only remaining parental figure has never been a source of warmth or comfort to him.

Balinor I don't think is as huge a presence in Merlin's life. Merlin always had a parent who loved him; his dad was just somebody who was gone before he ever knew him, and I don't think that's haunted him to the same degree as Arthur because Hunith was a loving, stable constant in Merlin's life. He also has a father figure in Gaius. The show really just brought Balinor into the picture as a deus ex machina to enable Merlin to control dragons; the emotional impact of his appearance falls short because we never really see Merlin wondering who his dad was or lamenting the fact that he grew up without one.

I'm actually more interested in Balinor from Hunith's perspective. Was this some tragic romance? Was he the love of her life who had to flee unexpectedly when Uther sent people after him? He's still talking about Hunith decades later. Does he just sit around in his cave sadly thinking about her and she's in Ealdor like, "Balinor who? Oh, yeah, that guy who knocked me up." Or is that why when we see her, she's single and seems to have raised Merlin by herself and never took (a? another? I can't remember if the show says for sure, but I had the impression she and Balinor were never married) husband?

In the OG medieval versions of the legend, Merlin was fathered by an incubus, making him half-demon. I think exploring that would have been more interesting than a cranky hermit who shows up for half a second just to be killed off for some cheap angst. It also would explain why Merlin's father is never really talked about; if I were Hunith, and I had been impregnated by some sexy male demon that showed up at night while I was half-asleep, I wouldn't tell my kid about it either. And that would be a pretty huge revelation for Merlin, who in the very first episode asks Gaius if he's some kind of monster. It would explain why he's so powerful and create a huge source of turmoil for him because the answer to whether or not he's a monster is actually, "Well, yeah, kind of. Half, anyway." I have actually toyed with the idea of doing something with this, so I might read up some more on those origin stories and do a one-shot at some point exploring this concept. Balinor as a dragonlord, tbh, doesn't really do it for me; Balinor as an incubus, on the other hand. *chef's kiss*

Balinor, for me, is really just one more in a long line of 'Well I wish they had done THAT differently.' The show is riffing on a body of myths that has many different versions of many different stories; there is no concrete canon, like with any folklore. So I don't take issue with them putting their own spin on so many of the stories that are central to Arthuriana: I just think the specific spin they put on many of the main aspects of the legends were lazily executed, and not worth changing if they weren't even going to bother laying the groundwork for their own individual take on a story that has been told and retold and tweaked for centuries. Balinor is just one more victim to the BBC's propensity for prioritising fart jokes and bad bald caps over silly things like consistent characterisation and narrative coherency. Not that I'm bitter, says woman 662,372 words into her second show rewrite.

the one i've read the most of: oh god i actually have no idea, there have been quite a few over the years - but my ao3 bookmarks tell me it's between merthur, drarry or destiel ( i think that's because those are just bigger fandoms with more fic content - i've definitely been more immersed in smaller fandoms that just sadly don't have the same volume of fics to read 💔)

this one just has two books in it so far. centered more around nico (obviously) and has a lot of mentions of self harm. the author is really really good at tagging each chapter though! harry potter is also a little bitch but he keeps redeemed. have not read the second one yet.

Probably my favourite fic ever, honestly I could go on about it for days. It's set in the canon era (I guess it's kind of like a season 4 rewrite? Certain episodes are directly rewritten but there are a load of new plot points and stuff). Its quite long, but the magic reveal is perfect and I love the take on Arthur as a character, as they make him into less of a complete idiot but a rational adult lol. Anyway, you'll probably cry, theres a lot of hugging, would totally recommend.

I adore this fic because it shows that even in a situation where Arthur doesnt have time to think and consider what to do with Merlin, his first choice is always to save him. This fic includes Uther being a dick as usual but yknow.

Merlin looked up from his nursing textbook to find Arthur standing in the doorway of his room.

Arthur was his roommate Gwen’s best friend’s brother. So he wasn’t exactly someone Merlin expected to see often. But recently Arthur seemed to be spending more time recently with Morgana, and therefore Gwen, which typically meant Merlin too. Since starting nursing school, Merlin had been a bit of a homebody, spending most of his time studying, but Gwen always pulled him downstairs to have drinks on Friday nights. So Merlin had been spending more time with Arthur, although Merlin still didn’t know him all that well.

Merlin rolled his eyes, “Hello, Arthur. Nice to see you too. Are we playing a word association game? Because in that case my word is basket.”

“Huh? No.” Arthur shook his head, “I mean a picnic in the park. Tomorrow.”

“There’s a picnic in the park tomorrow?” Merlin wondered if too much reading had scrambled his brain, because Arthur wasn’t making much sense.

“No. I mean. Yes.” Arthur cleared his throat. “A picnic with me. I have wine and bread. Cheese.”

“I’m lactose intolerant.”

“No cheese.”

Merlin tilted his head to the side, “Okay, sure. Why not? Sounds like a nice break.”

Arthur smiled, and Merlin found his heart thudding in his chest unexpectedly. Merlin didn’t usually feel like this: the low heat building in his stomach and the flutter of butterflies.

Arthur waved his hand, “I’ll pick you up tomorrow at noon.” Then he left as soon as he appeared, and Merlin was left more than a little bewildered.

Merlin heard some talking and then the front door shut, and Gwen replaced Arthur’s silhouette in the doorframe.

“So…?” she asked.

“What just happened?”

“Oh, love. I know I tease about you being an oblivious demi, but this takes the cake.”

“Oh my god, it’s a date.” Merlin said, laying his head on the book he had been reading. Maybe his brain had been scrambled.

Gwen started laughing.

“Arthur’s gay?” Merlin practically screeched. Arthur had never let any indication that he was queer. He didn’t seem to mind Morgana being aro or Gwen being bi, but Merlin hadn’t even considered if Arthur was queer too. “I thought he was just some posh brother that Morgana put up with!”

“Posh people can be queer, Merlin.” Gwen said between giggles, “And he’d bi. Just came out to Morgana a month ago. You’ve heard about their Dad. He’s even worse with Arthur, apparently. If that’s even possible.”

Merlin winced.

“So he’s a bit…”

“Awkward? Incapable of communication? I’m not the oblivious one at all! He just came in here and demanded a picnic!”

Gwen stepped up next to him and sympathetically petted his hair, “Do you want to go? You know you don’t have to.”

Merlin hesitated. He wasn’t exactly against going on a date…“Does he know I’m demi?”

“Yeah, he asked if you were gay. He didn’t know what demi was, but he immediately looked it up and he seemed really genuine about it. I think he’s a bit taken with you. Said you were cute.”

“Oh no, he’s not posh at all. He’s just awkward.” Merlin said with a groan, lying his head back down on the textbook.

“Is that a yes?”

Merlin whined again and Gwen seemed to realize that meant ‘I guess so.’

U - Three favorite characters from three different fandoms, and why they’re your favorites.

Ohhhh good question.

1) Harry Potter

Sirius Black - Sirius has been my number one favourite character from any work of fiction since I was about 12. So like... over half my life. It’s almost hard for me to put to words why he’s my favourite, because he just feels so intrinsically tied to my heart. Sirius is good and brave and loving. He puts the people he loves before himself, always. First James and then Harry. He’s been through hell and he isn’t okay, but he’s kind. He’s cracked but not broken. I could write a 5000 word essay about why I love him so very much and how much he means to me. I have endless headcanons about him. Like. Endless. You know, he stayed in Azkaban and didn’t even try to escape until he found out Harry was in danger. He didn’t do it for himself, he did it because his love for his godson is so profound, and he had to protect him from Pettigrew. I just.... @ me some time for an essay about it. I won’t write more here but yeah he’s just... my favourite forever. 

Hermione Granger - Hermione got me through the worst time in my life. I’ve always related so very much to Hermione. I was bullied horribly in elementary school and high school (like to the point where I was escorted off the school premises by the police for my safety once, and the school board apparently had a meeting about my case. Like. It was BAD). And seeing how Hermione was so bullied, especially in the first book, and how Harry and Ron became her friends... I read that when I needed to read that the most in my life. In my heart, when I was growing up, I was Hermione, and when I had no one, I always had Harry and Ron. 

Remus Lupin - Goddamn I love Remus. He’s been through so much and has been ostracized for something that isn’t his fault for most of his life. He has a softness and a patience and a gentle kindness that I will always love him for. He’s such a wonderful teacher, and another parent to Harry. I want an au where Sirius and Remus raised Harry more than anything, y’all. Remus is just so beyond wonderful, I can’t even. 

2) Once Upon a Time

Charming / David - Y’all do I even need to say it? I love literally everything about Charming. He’s so profoundly selfless, loving, brave, kind, romantic, loyal... and yet flawed and real. He would do anything for his true love and his family. He’s the best dad and the best husband I can think of in fiction. He’s just the best and I love him with my whole heart. I could say so much more but I don’t want this post to go on for 100000 years.

Snow - Y’all know I love my Snow. Snow is strong and tough and brave, and yet she’s always forgiving, and soft in her love and understanding. She will do what she has to do to survive and to help those she loves, and even those she doesn’t. She has been hunted and tortured and traumatized, and yet always remains kind, forgiving and hopeful. I love her so very much. She reminds me of my late Baba, sometimes. My Baba was a holocaust survivor  -- her parents, siblings and best friend were all murdered (except for one brother), and she always said of the Nazi monsters who did those terrible things that she wouldn’t even slap their faces. Some people think Snow is weak for how forgiving she is, but I see nothing but strength in her. 

Emma - How can anyone not love Emma? She’s the one that started it all. She is her father’s daughter trough and through. She’s strong, passionate, takes no shit from anyone, and loves her family. Her relationship with her parents are two of my favourite platonic relationships of all time. (Also she’s a beautiful bisexual disaster and I love her.)

3) Marvel (especially MCU)

Jane Foster - LISTEN. I love Jane Foster with my whole entire heart and anyone who doesn’t love her can FIGHT ME. She’s a tiny fiery Jewish Genius and she’s the BEST. The first Thor movie is one of my favourite movies of all time. The beauty of a scientist falling in love with a God/Alien is just so profoundly beautiful, y’all. She’s strong and smart and brave and so very real and I love her so much. I am SO BLOODY PUMPED to see her become Thor in Love and Thunder. 

Thor - I fuckin love Thor, y’all. As you’d see the second you walking into my apartment. Thor has such a beautiful character arc in his first movie, going from a dumb, entitled jock to this caring, soft, kind man who saves kids and would do anything for his lil scientist soulmate. He is such a fish out of water, and he’s just such a wonderful, loving man and I love him SO MUCH. Also, his power set is just so fuckin cool, y’all. 

(oh gods now I have to pick between Steve Rogers, Bucky Barnes, and Clint Barton???? How could you do this to me, Becky?!) 

Steve Rogers - Steve is the character who I most relate to in the MCU, especially pre-serum. I, too, am short and have shitty joints and will always stand up for the little guy. Steve is a tiny hero in the body of a suped-up god. All he wants is to do the right thing, to help everyone he can, and to protect Bucky Barnes. Steve and Bucky are one of my alltime big OTPs. That man was ready to start a whole goddamn war to protect Bucky, don’t @ me. Also, as the grandchild of holocaust survivors, how could I not absolutely adore a man who beats the shit outta Nazis? My Hero.

48. Out of Habit - Sterek

He’s gotten good at keeping secrets, is the thing, particularly when they pertain to the life-or-death, protect-or-destroy variety. Werewolves? Stiles has that shit on lock. Dead bodies popping up with seemingly no reasonable explanation? No, sir, Stiles doesn’t know anything, he’s innocent as can be, not a clue how they got there, could he go now, he’s got research to do back at campus. Scars down his back in the shape of a claw mark? It’s a funny story, really, but it’s a long one and Stiles doesn’t have the time right now, but yeah, next time he’ll tell it, next time, always next time.

Lie, avoid, misdirect. 

However, Stiles is not so great about keeping secrets that aren’t pretty much world-altering or could get someone killed. He hates to lie, honestly, would go the rest of his life without lying if he could help it because it just gives him a sick feeling in his stomach these days. So when it comes to his own secrets, when it comes to things that are relatively harmless, if a little inconvenient, Stiles tends to have a loose tongue.

What’s ridiculous is that it was his idea to keep it a secret in the first place, this thing between him and Derek. One, he has no idea how to go about explaining it to his father - who was, by the way, still reeling from the whole ‘werewolves’ thing when it started. Two, Stiles was two weeks shy of eighteen the first time that Derek had pinned him against the wall for a long overdue, tension-fueled makeout session. Three, there are some things that Stiles really wants to keep to himself. Just for a little bit, just a little piece of his own private heaven that none of his friends can sniff out with their freaky werewolf noses. 

And then, well, it becomes more of a hassle to come out and tell everyone they’ve been secretly dating for months than to just… keep it secret. And honestly, it’s not like they go out of their way to hide it. Derek’s not into a lot of PDA, anyway, and it’s not Stiles’ fault that all of their friends are idiots who apparently don’t realize that Stiles spends more time at Derek’s than at his dad’s when he’s not on campus, or that Stiles wearing Derek’s shirt is because they are, in fact, more than just buddies.

They haven’t kissed in front of any of the pack yet, but Stiles will sit on the couch and lean into Derek during movie night, will rest his head on the arm Derek throws across his shoulders, help himself to every single thing in Derek’s house. Even Scott has remarked that Derek’s house smells like Stiles is there all the time, and really, how much of a clue-by-four do these morons need?

So perhaps he takes a little pleasure in it when it finally hits them. Maybe he wishes he could have snapped a picture of their faces. The timing isn’t ideal: late on a research night, Stiles with three books in front of him and wielding a highlighter and four different colors of sticky notes, Lydia across the table, and the various wolves scattered throughout the room in various states of healing from their last round with whatever the holy hell that monster of the week was, bickering. 

The mug of coffee appears next to the book he’s reading, steaming hot and smelling like wonderful, amazing caffeine. Stiles reaches for it, but is stopped by Derek’s low voice, tired and rumbling.

“Tax,” the werewolf says, and Stiles grins - exhaustion is literally weighing him down, but Derek being his usual goofy self despite the fact that they are once again looking at death and battles and magic and bullshit… it helps. 

So Stiles, in Pavlovian response to that simple word, spoken so many times over many cups of coffee, lifts his face to grin at Derek, meets him in an almost chaste, gently romantic kiss. It barely lasts a second before he’s pulling away, grabbing the coffee mug, and going back to his research.

“What,” Scott says, high-pitched and shocked, and only then does Stiles look up and realize that, oh yeah. They are not, in fact, alone.

Oops.

Magic, Monsters and Merthur - 1x03 - (Magic)

Been a while, hasn’t it?

Alright so I totally forgot to post the two other parts for this episode. I just put so much into the Merthur part that I... kind of got sick? Blergh, that was awful.

Magic is way more fun! A little recap.

Two prophecies for the world, we got the bad timeline. Magic is a living Being that blessed humans, but humans didn’t like that it didn’t give them god-like powers over all of nature, so they made their own blessings purely out of spite and they fought something that shouldn’t even be fight-able, or even like... physical, and won.

What the Episodes taught us.

1x01 - Teleportation is a thing, but is apparently complicated. Veil spells - covering ones form with a look that deceives human eyes, but not the world. Dragons were so fancy they re-purposed Druidspeak to turn it into Dragonspeak - a similarly echo-y way of communication. Imagine snapping your fingers to a tune and doing magic at the same time. A dream scenario, but nothing to confirm such an amazing possibility. Merlin is resistant to sleep magic, or in other words, enchantment magic (Stuff that puts people under a spell, different from amulets that put people under a spell.). Amulets can be shattered - they can break under a certain amount of force applied and the spells they were keeping alive break at the same time. Quite a useful way to render a sorcerer harmless.

1x02 - Human lives are not higher than those of animals - I refuse to accept anything else, and I made up a whole theory of how the Cup of Life doesn’t take lives, just life-force, which every living being has, to continue my theory. Which means that any life is worth another’s life, even a flower’s, and making dead material into living things is a trend that just keeps going.

Let’s see what bullshit the afanc can do!

Anyway if you’ve heard it, then you know it’s similar to what Merlin used to revive stone. So it’s the same spell with little variations depending on what material you’re using.

Apparently, I WAS A GODDAMN FOOL FOR THINKING THAT.

I was going to somehow find the spell that Nimueh used here and then put it through a translator to see what it meant, but some very dedicated people on the wiki have already done that for me.

Yes, there is a Merlin Wiki, there’s a wiki for everything but I was just shocked how much information it held on everything…

And… The only difference is Nimueh calls the afanc “ancient” or “old” and Merlin just skips that and tells the stone to wake up already (as you do).

It WOULD have been fun if there was ONE spell that made DEAD material ALIVE, but it CHANGED based on what MATERIAL you USED.

But no. Clay is more ancient than stone. That’s all.

Because of that… not even fact, I used to think that Nimueh was just hiding out in one of Camelot’s deepest caves, very far away so no one could find her. Dumb idea, but imagine how many creatures would reside in these caves if they really were that large? Unending magical creatures attacks from somewhere underneath Camelot and the knights having to storm some “stronghold” of the creatures – that’s a whole episode!

Yeah… I’m not gonna try to explain how the hell healing spells work. Mostly because… I’m not sure the sorcerers know themselves.

Are there magical herbs at all? Or are simple herbs given better healing qualities through the use of magic? Are the herbs there as a placebo and healing magic doesn’t need anything but the incantations that all other magic needs?

There is one type of healing magic that I CAN explain, but that’s… Oh boy that’s in another season, and only relevant there.

But does any of this matter, really? Should we just accept that spells are spells and leave it at that?

I wanna leave it at that. It’s way more fun just thinking of what ways those spells can be used.

(I know that the whole point of this part of the re-watch is to try and fill in the gaps that the show left, but... Spells and what they do have always been iffy for me. I don’t like them, I don’t even know why. I like “silent” spells, or magic that you can do without speaking, I actually have no good reason for why I like that more and hate spoken spells and spells with rituals and specific materials.

Oh wait I did say why I hate them... But who read that rant anyway?

Oh no this line spiraled yet another theory.

This is taken from my “Too many reasons to hate Kilgharrah”, a book that I’m not sure when I’ll release since paper is scarce.

(I also think that everything Kilgharrah does is to somehow manipulate Merlin and get him to trust him.)

(Oh and assuming innocent and meaning-nothing lines have actually incredible meaning and are definitely hiding something is… The basis of this whole theory, I’m only staying in-character.)

Kilgharrah already knew of the afanc before Merlin came to him. Yes, you could say that Merlin hadn’t come to him before, so his advice on how to defeat it isn’t just another attempt to get the warlock to rely on him, but how did Kilgharrah know? If the dungeon he’s trapped in is connected to the other dungeons and the one Nimueh is doing her thing in, and the chain is long enough for him to reach and see her, why didn’t he call Merlin the moment he found out? A creature of his knowledge knows what the afanc does and he knows Camelot is in grave danger, what was he waiting for? For someone important to Merlin to die? Was he just petty and thought that half of Camelot getting destroyed was funny? What if it would have deterred Merlin further from him, make him leave Camelot, did this lizard really not think of that? Did he want Nimueh’s plan to succeed? Does Kilgharrah feel any kind of attachment to Nimueh? She is of the Old Religion. Maybe he feels that they are kin and he doesn’t wish for her plan to fail.

And if this has nothing to do with Nimueh at all and he doesn’t even know she still exists, then what reason would he have to withhold information? If he felt the afanc moving through the water, why didn’t call to Merlin and warn him? No excuse.

But when Merlin comes by, he has no choice. He tells him how to beat the afanc, but says nothing about Nimueh. He probably knows that she’s smart and she will see what Merlin is capable of and… who knows what she’ll attempt next.

Kilgharrah is willing to bet she doesn’t want to kill Merlin.

(ALSO MERLIN COULD HAVE KILLED THE AFANC HIMSELF, BUT OF COURSE, LET’S TRY TO HAMMER HOME THE IDEA THAT HIM AND ARTHUR ARE SUPPOSED TO BE WORKING TOGETHER EVEN MORE SO MERLIN COMES TO TERMS WITH THE IDEA THAT HE HAS TO BE A SERVANT ALL HIS LIFE.)

That bit about Nimueh being of the Old Religion and Kilgharrah sort of… being an accomplice of hers, it…

It made me think that the dragons and the Old Religion used to be connected.

And with how Kilgharrah manipulates Merlin and then how Nimueh is a slave to prophecies – that’s probably because the dragon told her of the prophecies.

I think that the dragons used to rule over the members of the Old Religion.

Why not, right> Dragons are powerful, they’re knowledgeable, why not turn a few puny humans to their side? It would help to know more things, and it would stroke their egos just a bit more.

I’ve literally no basis for this idea, but knowing that Dragonlords exist, it makes you think.

Why would dragons allow/need humans to speak to them? I honestly don’t think that Dragonlords are natural. Commanding dragons? Humans? What about eggs hatching? Why the fuck couldn’t an egg just… hatch like all other eggs do? How is a dragon’s soul equal to a human’s – the two don’t even have similar magic among them! Their bodies decay differently, their thinking is different, how can the two’s souls be considered brothers if the human part of the soul retains no memories of past reincarnations? It’s like it’s a new soul, and the thing that’s actually passed down after death (HOW COULD IT BE A SOUL THAT’S PASSED DOWN IF A PERSON WAS PERFECTLY FIND WITHOUT THIS QUESTIONABLE GIFT UP UNTIL THEIR FATHER DIED?) is just a type of magic. A very specific type of magic, that’s coded to only be passed down this way, and to work in the way that it’s described – a dragon’s soul is felt like that of a sibling’s.

I think… I think that Dragonlords were a thing created by the Old Religion sometime after dragons tried to rule over them. This caused the tables to turn, and suddenly the Old Religion had knowledge of the Draconic prophecies, which Nimueh actually seems to follow.

This is far-fetched, obviously. The two prophecy sets were far-fetched. But I’m nothing if not a stubborn believer in going big or going home.

And oh boy the documents of text for each episode each have like… 5k+ words. It doesn’t count the screencaps, otherwise, the character number would be in the hundred thousands.

I am not even halfway of going big.

So the afanc is a beast born of clay, needs considerable power to be conjured, and we all know Merlin has enough power to do that so the stone-resurrecting is not ooc. Exudes some sort of toxic waste from its body that drains the life force of everything that has any (which is everything, apart from non-organic stuff – includes glass, stone, rock that formed incredibly long ago and leather, etc.), but it takes a few days for it to finish what it starts in the first burst of draining. It is defeated by using fire and wind, the two of the four base elements the afanc isn’t made out of.

(We never heard of elements again though. There are some fire spells, but if this type of effective-against-one-weak-against-another thing is going on, then certain alchemy is conducted every time you cast these spells. Water extinguishes fire, fire eats up wind(oxygen), wind… erodes? Earth?, earth… Yeah no, it’s the other way around. Water extinguishes fire, fire scorches earth, earth… takes over wind? Doesn’t leave space for it to move? And air just carries water around so the little droplets get separated and can’t form something stronger. Yeah, that sounds better.

The other way around is empowering then, I guess. Or… making different elements? Wind picks up the earth, making it more impactful in the air current,  earth… turns into… lava… because of the heat? Fire… makes water vapor? And water… gets inbetween the air and also makes it more impactful? I don’t know… NOT ENOUGH INFO DAMMIT. AND THAT’S SAYING SOMETHING SINCE I’VE SPUN AN ENTIRE NEW UNIVERSE FROM LIKE 2 EPISODES OF THIS SHIT. THIS IS DISAPPOINTING LEVELS OF LOW INFO.)

favorite story you wrote: fuck omg this is difficult lol! because I both criticize and love all my stories in equal measure, I honestly don’t write anything that i don’t love, that doesn’t give me butterflies / actual chest pain (from angst). I feel like I’m being asked to choose a favorite child lol. so I’ll try to justify these picks somehow... 

closest to my heart: soldier, go bravely on (also mentioned above). this is the fic that brought me back to writing fic, and to tumblr even! I was on hiatus (that I didn’t know was a hiatus because I had no intention of coming back) for six years before writing this fic. I wrote it so quickly after the got finale, it was such a passionate and fevered few days and it just sucked me back in to everything I used to love as a teenager. It was also a nice stretch out of my comfort zone, because of the dialogue (which was so tightly planned it’s ridiculous, I wrote the whole fic as a screenplay type thing first to make sure there wasn’t a single dialogue word not needed) and tv-episode style. It’s also such a wish-fulfillment fic that I can’t read certain parts without getting a bit teary. for all those reasons and more, this fic will always be so special to me. 

most proud of: wolf, circle north (jonsa, got, alternate season 7 & 8). this is the longest fic I’ve ever attempted and the number I’ve hours I’ve sunk into it is astounding and i should be ashamed.  It’s going to be obscenely long (my outline is 70+ chapters) and when I pull it off, best believe it’s going into a bound book so I can look at how thicc it is and be like, “I did that!” lol. The range of POVs is one of the most challenging but most rewarding part of this fic, and why I’m so proud of it. This is another wish-fulfillment fic for me, not just because it’s another fix-it fic but because I have been writing bits and pieces of this fic for about three years. I kept thinking of jonsa scenarios and little scenes I would have loved to see after season 6 and writing them in a little secret doc, just for me, as I never thought I’d write fic again. After writing “soldier” i had already broken my hiatus and I realized this fic was an actual possibility, so I put it out into the world. I couldn’t be more happy that I did that. Not only did it give me the chance to be in such an excellent, lovely fandom, but the feedback I get is so validating after having this be my secret little project for so long.  

most formative: Coffee & Cigarettes, (merthur, merlin bbc) I’m ashamed to list this and the merthurs reading this 100% want to kill me for having the audacity because it’s incomplete and hasn’t been updated since 2013 when there’s only one chapter left so what’s my excuse?  I call this the most formative for me because until I published this I didn’t really have a fic that people followed and liked, eagerly awaited updates for, and commented regularly on. I was writing a lot of one-shots and atla stuff on tumblr (I used to RP lmao I was like 15 ok?) This was the first time I experienced so many fic-life things, like being excited to get AO3 emails, etc. This was the first time I started to really focus on character which is so important to me now, my writing is completely character driven. Not to mention Merlin and Arthur’s dumbassery and sheer attraction and denial is just... *chef’s kiss* 

guiltiest pleasure: my recent foray into nedsei, who am I??? one more word and you won’t survive, just international hate sex

story you were most nervous to post: ummm idk I’m usually excited not nervous, since for me fic writing is just fun, I write things I’d enjoy reading and that I’m proud of. I read my own fics more than anyone else does, I guarantee it. am I a narcissist? who knows I guess I’ll say “soldier” again because I hadn’t posted fic in six years.

how you choose your titles: wow the hardest part of fic writing for me!!!!! thanks!!!!! lol. Okay so for my work titles, which are always terrible and I literally regret them immediately after posting, it’s usually just some words I play around with and string together that are somewhat thematic and related to the work... they’re always terrible lmao, I hate making titles. I mean, look at “soldier, go bravely on” and “wolf, circle north” for god’s sake, I hate them lmao. But I have to pick a title to post, so!!! For chapter titles and one-shots I’ll usually go with a song lyric, and especially for my chapter titles I spend so long seeking out the perfect one that reflects some thematic or emotional content of the chapter somehow. I’m very proud of my chapter titles for wolf, circle north. I have a doc on my scrivener just for chapter titles that I created in the very early stages of writing it, where I just dumped HUNDREDS of song lyrics that I thought I might use. Then by them I wrote some scenarios where they could work. here’s a screenshot:

It’s so helpful now. Sometimes posting an update will take an hour more than necessary because of me going through that doc, finding the perfect lyric. 

do you outline: OH, DO I OUTLINE... Hell Yeah, I outline. I couldn’t live without outlining. I love outlining. My outlines have outlines. I’m a planner centric, calendar centric, bullet-journal bitch so of course I love outlining. In all seriousness though: I write out of chronological order. I feel my writing is best when I write the scene I’m in the mood to write- unfortunately this scene could be ten chapters down the line from the chapter I’m gonna post next. This is the biggest reason outlining is necessary for me. If I didn’t have an outline, my story would be a non-post-able mess. 

I wasn’t kidding when I said my outlines have outlines. For wolf, circle north I have, um, a few. Character/location centric outlines where I bullet every scene that needs to happen for that plot to happen cohesively (these were all more or less completed before I even started writing the fic), then a “loose” outline that I copy everything from the other outlines into for some semblance of chronological order, then a Polished Final Outline that I write from. I know that sounds psychotic. It’s how my brain works. Some photo evidence/explanation:

And here’s a screengrab of my Final Outline, this is pretty much how it is all the way down- The POV character is italicized in the front, I talk to myself a lot in there, let myself get carried away, will sometimes write out whole segments of the scene if they come to me while outlining. Spoilers for chapters 1-3 of w,cn I guess!!!

Then, because scrivener is awesome, I get to see this outline in the corkboard view (I input every scene as a card) and so I get to see every part of my outline as a Synopsis on the right hand side of the doc where I’m writing the scene:

The POV and status tags (which are completely customizable) on the lower right are helpful too. This post is just a scrivener ad.

coming soon / not yet started: I have so many fics in the works, I’m an indulgent person so if an idea comes to me I usually go with it for a time. I’ve had a very not-serious Jonsa PLL AU I’ve been writing on and off since summer. I have three different fairytale AUs (also jonsas) I’ve been working on and one time travel AU for @sunbeamsandmoonrays. I can’t say when or if any of these will see the light of day, because my priority is my WIPs and my original writing. But the most prevalent are my Halloween fics (one jonsa, one gendrya, one merthur) which I really want to be able to put out this month, but only if I meet some other goals. I’m trying to rein in my indulgent ass, ya’ll. 

do you accept prompts: no. sorry! but I do workshop ideas with friends, for example the nedsei fic happened that way by talking with @flibbertigiblet. But I don’t take writing prompts in my inbox.

Merthur idea, Arthur is hit with a spell that makes his brain to mouth filter disappear, so he ends up declaring his affection for Merlin by stabbing a table and telling gwaine to "take his drunken hands of his man". I just live for jealous Arthur!!

The animals scampered away at the sound of hooves slapping against the forest floor. The hunting party was nearing the edge of the border Camelot shared with Cendred’s kingdom, and Arthur was about to order his knights (and Merlin) to change directions when a set of strange footprints caught his eye. It was unlike any he had ever seen before.

He swung off his horse and crouched down. “Merlin come here and look at this,” he called.

Grumbling under his breath, Merlin dismounted and joined Arthur on the ground. Together, they examined the perplexing marks on the ground.

“Arthur, let’s not bother with this,” Merlin said. “It looks like it’s from a magical creature. If it’s not bothering anyone, let’s just leave it alone.”

Arthur scoffed at the idea. “Leave it alone? Not until I figure out what’s wandering through Camelot. It could be dangerous. What if it’s terrorizing villages? Killing my people?”

“I’m sure we would of heard of it by now. Remember last time? There was that one idiot that thought, ‘Hey, let’s kill that unicorn. I’m sure nothing bad will happen to me or Camelot.’”

“Hey, Merlin?” Arthur said.

“Yeah?”

“Shut up.”

Arthur called Gwaine and Percival over. “We going after that.” He pointed at the misshapen tracks.

“Arthur, I told you something like this would happen.” Merlin complained. They made it back to the castle without much incident, besides the constant rambling. Merlin didn’t bother to listen to any of it.

“Hmmm I really should listen to you more, but your face turns  pink when I don’t,” Arthur slurred. It was almost as if he were drunk- a talkative drunk, but one nonetheless.

The four of them were on their way to find Gaius. They still weren’t completely sure what was wrong with Arthur, but there was no way he’d be able to lead in this state.

They finally stumbled into Gaius’s room when Merlin thought he finally couldn’t take it anymore.

“Now what in the world happened this time?” Gaius said, leading Arthur to a chair.

“Our princess over here shot some winged horse,” Gwaine laughed. “And now he’s definitely spelled with something.”

“He just seems a bit tipsy if you ask me,” Percival said.

Gaius glanced sternly at Arthur. “So you shot a Pegasus, even after what happened with the unicorn?”

“Merlin’s fault.”

“Oh, and how is this my fault now?” Merlin snapped.

Arthur pouted. “You didn’t think I could do it.”

“Oh good lord,” Merlin said. “We all know you can bloody do whatever you want to. All I said was that you shouldn’t.”

“Yeah but you were looking at me with your… eyes, and your- your face.”

Gwaine and Percival shared a knowing look, both trying to hide a laugh.

“Gaius! Fix him, he hasn’t been making any sense for the past four hours, and there’s that feast later today!” Merlin had had enough.

Gaius spent a few minutes rifling through some books before he came to a conclusion. “This will only last for 24 hours. There are no harmful effects exactly, but he’s cursed to say the first things that come to his mind.”

“So like a truth spell,” Gwaine cackled.

“We have to cancel the feast!” Merlin exclaimed.

Percival swung an arm around Merlin’s shoulders. “Now there’s no need for that. All we have to do is tell people he’s drunk.”

The room was lavishly covered in Camelot’s colors, the tables layered with food and guests meandering about. At the front of it all sat Arthur, still both spelled and now feeling the effects of the wine. He offered his empty cup to Merlin, who hesitantly refilled it.

“Arthur, I think this should be your last cup. I’m going to go get some food for myself.”

Arthur frowned. “But I like it better when you’re at my side,” he said, the flush on his cheeks turning a shade darker. “And it’s your duty as my servant to stay,” he said in a rush. The combination of alcohol and the curse was a dangerous thing.

“Yes, but you always let me leave,” Merlin said, confused.

Arthur looked dazed for a second. “Oh yeah,” he slurred. “Fine, go ahead, but come back later, okay?”

“Of course,” Merlin slipped away.

He weaved his way through the crowd, picking off a few plates of the other servants and knights. He eventually found Gwaine and Percival, who both looked just as sloshed as Arthur.

“Meeeeerlin,” Gwaine said. “Percival had a reallllly good idea,” he said, grinning maniacally. He grabbed Merlin’s arm and led him to a relatively clear space in the room. “Now just stay calm, and it’ll be over in juuust a second.”

“Gwaine, I don’t under-mph,” Merlin was silenced when Gwaine leaned over and put his mouth over his, but they broke apart quickly at a loud slam at the front of the room.

“GWaine, get your drunken hands off my man!” Arthur bellowed over the chatter of the room. Merlin glanced over in confusion, and conversations trailed off into silence.

Arthur was pointing at the two of them, his sword clean through the table.

As Arthur started stumbling over, Merlin turned back to Gwaine. “I don’t really understand what’s going on,” he said, his face a cherry red.

“You may of ignored what what Arthur was saying on the way back to Camelot, but I didn’t,” Gwaine said.

“And what was he saying?” Merlin asked.

“Well, he never did say your name exaaaactly, but Percival and I were getting an earful about sunny morning smiles, and sky blue eyes,” Gwaine started snickering. “Now go help him before he trips over his own feet.”
