I love how La’an’s first instinct was to casually try and protect Boimler from getting hurt, but in such a way that he’d not Know she was trying to be nice to him. I mean, it didn’t work, Bradward is too much if a nerd to not know she made that rule up on the fly. But it was very kind of her, she’d clearly spent time thinking about how this may hurt him and was trying to stop what happened to her happening to anybody else. 

It also explains why she kept her distance, but I think in a weird way that Boimler and Mariner’s hero worship of all the crew protected them from feeling any hurt. They put them on a pedestal and any kind of veneration does stop you from getting personally attached because you’re not really seeing them deeply as individuals, and while they did break through that after a while and kind of properly get to know some of the enterprise crew, it wasn’t a real attachment as so much it was them recognising that these people are just like them, really, so they managed to sail through this one to call it fun hijinks rather than anything that hurt them.  

But it’s still kind that La’an included a rule of her own to protect Boimler from emotional hurt as much as to protect his time stream.
