Here's a piece from my work with Lost in Cult for their book A Handheld History 88-95. This accompanied an essay about the amazing job developer M2 did squeezing a port of Gunstar Heroes originally created for the Mega Drive onto the much smaller Sega Game Gear.

I love the Mega Drive version of the game, and I've played the Game Gear port and it really is impressive. A really fun job to illustrate how the game was jam packed into the cartridge. (Also any excuse to pay tribute to one of my favourite boss fights!)

Don’t Mind Me...

Hey Hey...not this site reminding me its been months since I’ve posted. A lot has been happening. I’ve scaled back all my side projects and tinkering to focus on making The Skeleton King. It was almost a year ago I did the Lost Cartridge 3 game jam that catapulted me into this project. 

It has hit a point in its making that I have to continue. It is like an itch I can’t exactly scratch. So while the content here turns more into dev dairies be on the look out for more updates.

Parts of the game are fully mapped out with some implementation. There is still A LOOOOT of art and work to do in order to get a fresh demo ready. But as that starts evolving I’ll be sharing some of that work. I’m just not ready to share the story yet...but keep them peepers peeped. and thank you for being on this ol journey with me. 

I’ll also be sharing projects here from other indie devs that catch my eye so be on the look out to maybe find some new games and devs to keep your eyes on.

You will then need to answer the security questions correctly to open the cylinder. Defeat the marauders that occupy the area, then enter the big building at the northwestern side of the area. After purchasing the datapad, head to the Monarch Wilderness and follow the objective slightly southeast of the center of the map to find the UDL Lab. Purchase the Damaged UDL Datapad from Duncan’s Wholesome Dry Goods at Fallbrook on Monarch. The Mandibular Rearranger is in a safe sitting on the ground straight ahead. The Shrink Ray will be sitting on a table to the right of him. Travel to Phineas’ Lab and make your way to the room where Phineas is located. Enter the room to find the Prismatic Hammer in a safe on top of the metal table straight ahead. Loot the Outlaw Squad Leader to receive the Repair Hangar Keycard and use it to open the locked door next to the workbench. Crouch walk through the hole and take out the enemies in the room. Follow the bunks to reach a small hole at the end of the path. When you enter the bunkroom, look left and head up the stacked crates to reach the top of the bunks. Head to the bunkroom, which can be reached by going through the room with the large red container next to Security. Purchase the Battered Mardet Datapad from Gladys in the Rest-n-Go at Groundbreaker. Hahaha! Receiving an ask that just says Spider-man was the best thing to happen to me all day. Hahaha!

But to answer the questions, yes? Sort of? I wrote a fic where Peter ended up webbed to a wall and had to call Tony for assistance. Only Tony ends up webbed to the wall as well and then Rhodey has to some save both of them.

[Keep in mind this is an old fic and I was just starting to learn how to write well. Therefore not as- well written(?) as my newer work.]

Summary: Using new web-fluid before it's tested may not have been Peter's best choice but it had seemed like a good idea at the time... Right up until he ended up webbing himself to a wall. In comes Tony Stark to the rescue...except it's not that easy and he ends up a bit stranded himself. ...that leaves it to Rhodey to save the day but not until he gives Tony a really hard time about it.

Peter swung from building to building chasing after the largest of the men who had just robbed the bank at the corner of Main and 76th.  He started off by trying to wrangle them together but it quickly got out of control and he ended up having to zero in on the leader of the crew while his AI tracked and reported the location of the others to the police.  All of this would have been thrilling and exhilarating had he not just spent the last two hours trying to make the perfect hammock between the two tallest buildings in the city.  As such his web fluid was running dangerously low.

At some point, in order to reserve supplies, he resorted to hopping from vehicle to vehicle in traffic trying to catch up with the car the criminal had stolen.  Then just when he thought all hope was lost and he was starting to get frustrated the man swerved into an alley and dove out of the car.  Still in pursuit, Peter went back to using his webs so that he didn't lose track of the man in the dark twisted alleyways but soon regretted every decision he'd made that evening.  With a flick of his right web-shooter came...nothing.  Same with the left and he was suddenly out of options.  "Ah, come on!", he shouted in frustration as he willed one more web to come flying from his wrist but it didn't happen.  All he seemed to have done was to gain the attention of the man he'd been chasing as well as several other men who had seemingly been waiting for them.

"Looks like your arsenal's run dry Bug-Boy.", the biggest of the men said with a smug look on his face.

It was right about then that Peter remembered he had a couple 'experiment' vials of a new web formula in his belt.  It was meant to be tested in the lab the next day but feeling cornered and decidedly out of any other ideas Peter attempted to draw their attention away from what he was about to do, in the best way he knew how.  With his mouth.  "Actually.  Spiders aren't technically bugs.  They're arachnids.  Eight legs and all that.  I think I learned that in fourth grade but I can see how someone with so little--"

"--Shut your mouth boy! Or I swear to God I'm going to yank that mask right off your face and shove it in there to shut you up myself", another threatened just as Peter was getting the old cartridges discharged and was beginning to insert the new ones.  "Why do you wear a mask anyway? Some kind of fashion statement?"

By the time the man had issued his question Peter was ready to web all five men up and had the perfect movie quote response in mind.  "Oh no. It's just that they're terribly comfortable. I think everyone will be wearing them in the future.", he shouted with glee as he webbed each one of them to the wall.  As he took off out of one alley and into another to make his quick exit the new fluid seemed to jam up in his web-shooters. "Not now, not now, not now...", he started chanting as he switched from swinging to running while furiously snapping his wrist together in a wild attempt to get mechanics working again.  When that failed he found a quiet spot to between two buildings to attempt to unjam them.  Then it happened.  The second he stuck the small screwdriver he carried with him the appropriate place to dislodge the useless and stubbornly attached vial it exploded sending strings of web everywhere, the force knocking him into a wall.

While he was trying to decide what had gone wrong that would cause that much force to come from such small canister he realized something very important.  Something like the fact that he was solidly plastered to the wall behind him.  In his own webs.  The entire predicament seemed preposterous because since when do spiders get stuck in their own webs?  'Since you're not really a spider', he thought begrudgingly to himself as he tried to come up with a solution.  His usual webs dissolved completely after about two hours but he had no idea how this concoction was going to work.  "Karen?  Any ideas on how I can get out of this?", he asked his AI in defeat.  He knew full well what the answer was going to be.

"I do not.  However, based on my calculations I believe you can expect the webs to have dissolved enough for your enhanced strength to break through them in approximately ninety minutes."

"Yeah.  That's what I thought.  What time is it now?"

"It is currently eleven-thirty-two.  Being that it's a Tuesday night, your curfew is set for midnight."

"Great.  Just great.  How am I supposed to get home by midnight?", he grumbled to himself more than anything else but the AI responded all the same.

"Tony Stark keeps a supply of your web dissolving in his lab.  Would you like for me to initiate contact?"

Giving it some thought, he finally decided that Tony laughing at him would be way less offensive than May yelling at him for climbing in through his window after one in the morning.  "Fine.  Call Mr. Stark."

It was a matter of seconds before Tony's face was overtaking the corner of Peter's HUD.  "Hey, uh, Mr. Stark.  What's up?", he asked in an attempt to sound casual.

Squinting his eyes and obviously scanning Peter's vitals, Tony frowned.  "What's up?  That's it?  That's why you called?", he asked suspiciously because the kid's vitals seemed fine other than a slightly elevated heart rate.   "I mean don't get me wrong I love it when you call me just to chat.  I'm just not used to you doing that while you're out on patrol."

Trying to smile, Peter laughed lightly.  "I uh, I may be in a bit of a situation.", he admitted calmly but when Tony's eyes went from confused to concerned he felt the need to clarify quickly.  "I mean, I'm not hurt or anything like that.  I'm fine.  Just, well... stuck."

"Stuck.", Tony replied in a tone that was somewhere between a question and a statement.  "Stuck how?"

Blushing slightly, Peter's already forced smile faltered a bit.  "Well, Mr. Stark, you know that new web fluid I wanted us to test tomorrow?"

At this point, Tony already had a vague idea of where this was going on and groaned.  "Please tell me you didn't web yourself to a wall."

"I didn't web myself to a wall?"

"Are you asking me or telling me, kid?", Tony replied with an exasperated laugh, already pinpointing the boy's location and grabbing a few bottles of the web dissolvent they used from time to time in the lab.  "I'll be there in twenty.  Hang in there."

Sighing heavily, Peter ended the call and began to pray that no one happened down the small alley he was in.  That was not an image he wanted to see trending on any social media site.  'Spider-man Caught in His Own Webs' sounded like a horrible headline to have to deal with.  As he dangled there awaiting rescue his mind provided several more, less than ideal headlines that could stem from this mishap.  Then, after what felt like a very long time he looked to see how many minutes had passed only to groan in response.  It had only been seven minutes.  Seven very long minutes that were leaving him feeling restless and increasingly claustrophobic.

By the time, Tony arrived Peter's heart rate had increased significantly as he wiggled his fingers and tried to remind himself that this was temporary.  He would be free in moments.  "Hey, kid.  How's it hangin'?", Tony teased as he lifted the faceplate to reveal his trademark smirk.  However, that only lasted for so long before he realized that Peter was on the very brink of losing his mind.  "You're alright.  I've got you.  Calm down."

Mission of Mercy: Nine

“What’dya want?” Joe sighed as he answered the phone. 

He’d been napping. It was Saturday and with no visitors incoming, it was the perfect day to curl up with a book. Except he hadn’t managed to read much before he crashed into sleep. 

“Y/N and her boyfriend are on the TV,” Wildman rasped.

 “What?” Joe snapped, instantly alert. If you were on the news, something had to be horribly wrong. 

“Channel 4,” he rasped between bouts of cough. “HYDRA bust. Huge.”

The phone line went dead, but Joe hardly noticed as he struggled to change the channel, his hands shaking. He hated the news, hated it. He read the paper. He listened to the radio. But he hated news broadcasts. 

Still. He couldn’t not look.

He needed to know. And when the Channel flickered to life, he muted the anchor. He didn’t care what that silly ass was saying. All he could see was you. Boots on the ground, dressed for work. All sleek black and armed. 

Different than in his day. 

And sure enough, not far from you, there was Bucky. And Sam. And a redhead that he’d never met. But he watched you. His sunshine. Take the gun from an enemy and toss it straight up, to where Bucky was perched on a car above you and clearly jammed or out of bullets. 

“That’s my girl!” he shouted, “Get those fucking Nazi bastards!”

“Y/N, Down!”

You dropped quickly and rolled out of the way without question when Sam shouted at you before pulling your knife from some goon’s eye. “Where the fuck is Stark?” you ask. The four of you were in danger of getting over run. Goons poured out of compound like termites from a toppled mound. They just kept coming. 

“The Cavalry is coming, don’t you worry,” Tony said grunting with effort, “just as soon as I shut this down.”

“Somebody has to get me up to the gallery,” you pant. “I need a PA system. And quiet.”

“No,” Bucky said, throwing another jammed gun aside. “Jesus. 70 fucking years and these assholes still can’t make a decent gun.”

“What do you mean, No?” you challenge, emptying the spent cartridge and use the now useless gun as a club to whack a goon upside the head with before he had time to fire at Natasha. 

“You can’t talk down a whole fucking squad,” Bucky growled. 

“No, but I can create a lot of panic.”

“How much panic?” Steve asked, bouncing his shield off someone’s forehead. 

“A lot,” you say, grinning. 

“Sam-” Steve started. 

“On it,” Sam said, heading up to clear the way. 

“Hulk!” Steve yelled, “Take her up!”

And before Bucky had time to protest, you were being hauled up the wall.

Bucky didn’t know who he was angrier at. His girl or his best friend. What the fuck he’d done in his life to have two people in his life with so little self-preservation instinct, he didn’t know. 

Sure. It worked. You had managed to buy the time everyone needed for Stark to do whatever the fuck he was doing. And sure. You were fine. A little banged up but no more than anyone else. But. just the thought that you could have ended up in Hydra’s hands without him to protect you made him feel furious. 

He took a deep breath and started the water in the shower. He knew he needed to talk to you. To tell you why he was pissed off. But. 

He’d seen the way you flinched away from raised voices. And he knew first hand how much you hated people being mad at you… Not like it took him much to figure out WHY after sitting through the world’s most awkward and frustrating dinner with your mom. And he couldn’t, for the life of him figure out having a daughter. Having lost a son. And treating his only living child the way Carlie had treated you. Every aspect of your life was up for scrutiny. Every piece of you was wanting. Just a little bit. Just enough to make you want the approval you were never going to get. It had made him feel sick. 

And it was enough to keep him in the shower. At least until he’d calmed down a little. At least enough not to yell. Or say anything without thinking. 

He’d learned to be deliberate when he talked to you. To chose words carefully. Because you did. Even when you weren’t using your specific skills, you spoke intentionally. And Bucky could appreciate that. Sure. it meant that sometimes, you replied slowly. But. He could be sure that you told him, as clearly as possible, what you wanted to say. The unmeasured speech was reserved for specific things… like heckling. Or, Bucky imagined moments of passion. 

If you spoke then at all.

“Are you mad at me?” 

Bucky shut the door to your room quietly and looked at where you were watching him over the back of the sofa. 

“No,” he said honestly. “Not now that I’ve had time to think.”

“Bucky-”

“I know how you can make it up to me,” you tell him, grinning

“Oh?” he asked, tweaking your nose gently. 

“You can give me a cuddle,” you tell him, giving him the puppy dog eyes he still hadn’t learned to turn down.

“Such a slave driver,” he sighed, “Jesus Christ, woman.”

“Keep it up and I’ll make you kiss me too,” you say, grinning. 

“Ugh,” he groaned, “Fine. I guess we can cuddle. But I draw the line at kissing. I don’t want anything to do with your boobs.”

She closed her eyes and swallowed. It wasn’t the time for such questions. She could write to someone for news once she was safely away from Kethyia. If she found out something bad had happened because of her before she left the country, she doubted she would have the strength to make it all the way to a border. Not with all of the guilt she was already carrying.

CASE

“Put him on the pallet,” she instructed. “Is he the more critical case of the two?”

Radka nodded, slipping back into the mass casualty mentality she’d left behind at the end of the Liberation as she washed her hands. “Handgun wound to the lower abdomen. Small caliber, straight through, no noted damage to spine, lungs, or heart. Pressure has been applied since the wound was sustained but he’s lost a lot of blood.”

Damir’s left hand was closed over the slide to stop the used cartridge from ejecting, effectively jamming the gun. His right hand was on the soldier’s wrists, forcing the barrel down until it was aimed at the ice. 

She met his gaze. His expression was somewhere between fear and concern, and his silent question—are you okay?—was obvious in the extended pause as they looked at each other. She managed a shaky nod, then watched as his expression cycled from relief to anger and then shut down completely.

As they neared the Administrative District, there were signs of the day’s unrest. Fresh graffiti, broken glass, and abandoned protest signs were everywhere. Windows were boarded up and doors had fresh chains across them. It reminded her of the last days of the monarchy, before the fighting had started in earnest and everything had fallen apart.

“This is going to be bad,” she said as they ducked into the tree cover surrounding the Academy. 

“I think so,” he agreed.

Time Enough at Last for Yakuza 5 ⊟

The Yakuza Remastered Collection completed its time-release trilogy last month, with a relocalized PS4 release of Yakuza 5. Upon completing my download, I wondered how I would ever find time for this monstrous, expansive game, with its seemingly infinite variety of distractions, all worthy of exploration.

The Monkey’s Paw curled a finger. Sorry, everybody.

Yakuza 5 is not the best Yakuza game in terms of storytelling or tone. That is, of course, Yakuza 0. Where that prequel is at all times outrageous, Yakuza 5 makes more of an attempt to be straight-faced and serious even when it shouldn’t be. And honestly, it shouldn’t try at all, since it’s got some of the silliest stuff in the series. Ever wanted to have Kiryu try his hand at ramen cookery? I hadn’t either until I did it. 

But where Yakuza 5 excels, and why I put it at the top of this Polygon list, is in the volume of content. And right now, for those of you stuck at home, plans canceled, that’s a boon.

Yakuza 5 has five different playable characters across five cities -- approximately five more cities than I’m seeing at any time this week. Each city has shops, restaurants, and plenty of other things to do, like two different styles of fishing, photography, karaoke, uh, snowball fights, idol dance-offs... taxi driving... taxi racing... Each city also has local foods described lovingly in menu text. Restaurants are something else I’m experiencing only virtually right now.

When I played this back on PS3, I spent who knows how many hours doing all the stuff I thought I wanted to. This time, I realized there were whole minigames I never bothered with, each representing hours of gameplay. For example, Saejima can go hunting in the mountains, gathering meat to survive and occasionally running from a giant bear. (Of course you get in a fistfight with the giant bear. You knew.) I’m not interested in hunting, so I passed this bit up. This time, I decided to check it out, and while I still don’t like hunting, this minigame is a really neat experience! It’s part survival, part shooting, part resource management, part bears.

I don’t know if I’d recommend Yakuza 5 as an entry point. Kiryu is pretty beaten down and world-weary by this point, and the context as to why and how makes more sense of why he’s hiding out as a suspiciously barrel-chested, sad taxi driver. But the storyline isn’t so important, and any of the three games in the Remastered Collection would be a worthwhile use of your quarantine time. Even better, play all of them.

But while they’re all great, Yakuza 5 is by far the most Yakuza, in the most unnecessary, jam-packed ways. I still love this game for its ambition, for just how many fences it swings for. And now is the right time to get lost in some virtual cities. 

Maybe don’t track down an old copy of Dead Souls right now, though. You know, the one about a walled-off city facing a zombie disease. Maybe it’s not the right time for that one.

Just a little remake of a little gift I’d give to Branch a few months ago

Hey, everyone! I know this post here looks VERY familiar, because I made a picture like this back in December, and the reason I made it is because there have been fans of the Trolls franchise who made human AU fan fictions of Branch and Poppy, and since video games don’t exist in the Trolls world (yet, not that I know of), I thought I would give Branch three video game consoles to try out, along with six of the best games I could find for each system (along with that Superman game, which is meant to be a little prank, as that game is considered one of the worst games ever made).

I’m sure you all know what these three systems are, but for those of you who don’t know, I’ll explain.

The big black system on the left is Sega's 32-bit CD-based video game console, made as the successor to the 16-but Sega Genesis/Mega Drive, the Sega Saturn, released in May 1995.

As you can see, I changed two of the games I would pick out for that system that I’d have Branch try out when using that system. The two new games are NiGHTS Into Dreams (the best game on the system), and Sonic Jam (a compilation of Sonic 1, 2, 3, and Knuckles), both of which were made by Sonic Team. I added these two because, you know, why would you want to play a Sega console if it doesn’t have some kind of Sonic game or game made by Sonic Team?

But anyway, let’s move on.

The little grey box in the middle, that’s Sony's very first video game system, a 32-bit CD-based console, the Sony PlayStation, released in September 1995.

And as you can see, I also replaced one of the games I picked out for Branch to try out when using the system. That new game is Spyro the Dragon, made by Insomniac Games and released in 1998. I picked this game along with Crash Bandicoot because both of those franchises were the most popular PlayStation franchises of all times, and many gamers loved these games when they came out. And, both Crash and Spyro just had their own HD remasters recently, with the Crash Bandicoot N Sane Trilogy in 2017 and the Spyro Reignited Trilogy in 2018, respectively. I’m also really interested in them and I’m planning to try them out now. You guys should try them out too if you have a chance. You can find both of them for the PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, or you can get it on your computer through Steam. (Seriously, guys, you should give Steam a try. It’s free to join, and if you don’t have a video game console, you can still get those same games through that website for you computer!)

Okay, I kinda got lost there. Let’s move on to the last system.

That dark grey system with four controller ports, that’s Nintendo’s 64-bit, cartridge-based console, made as the successor to the 16-bit Super Nintendo Entertainment System (and the Virtual Boy, but no one talks about that), the Nintendo 64, released in September 1996.

Once again, I only changed one game in the selection of games available for Branch to try out when using the system. That new game is Star Fox 64. I chose that because, well, after watching the history of the Star Fox series, and seeing how great and memorable the game was on the N64 at the time, I decided I should include it, since I think Branch could like it.

Well, that’s all the changes I have for this post. If you’re wondering how I got all of this information for all these systems and those games, well, I actually found a YouTuber, and he’s pretty much the go-to person when it comes to video game history. Friggin...*Everything Stays intensifies*

I've been feeling... sentimental I guess.    Here is one of the best presents I was ever given as a child.

   My problem with the 3Ds is that it's not very comfortable to hold in my hands. It's heavy, and big. And the top screen is blurry, because they sacrificed a 100% sharp image for the 3D effect that no one really used much.    The DSi is lightweight, but its thinness actually felt really weird when I first got it.    The DS Lite, however, was just right. Maybe it's just nostalgia, but I loved that little system.    For quite a while, my heart has kinda been urging me to return to simple, comfortable, little games... maybe I should look for some used games sometime. I didn't necessarily have the biggest library, but there are certainly at least a few games I can revisit. It's been ages since I actually played on the DS, because most of the few gameboy games we had are kinda shitty, and the normal/small cartridges can be put in the DSi.    But I have missed some things I suppose.

   At some point, I lost my original stylus, but we had an extra pink one.    I also lost the cover that goes over the bottom, to block dust if ya don't have a gameboy cartridge jammed in. I caved, and ordered a replacement part off ebay.

   I carefully did a wipe-down job. I'm not much of a fan of stickers, and I guess I thought the rough colored pencil doodles should be faded off. Regardless, some yellowing has occurred, which reminds me of a BJD panel at Anime Iowa I went to once. Some will fade and/or yellow over time, and you can slow it, but you can't stop it.

   There was a sheet of plastic stuck on each window, I remember us placing those protectors when I got it.    For a long time, I felt bad about how kid-pressure left the bottom window all scratched up.    I took my DS out of its place I have kept it stashed, and did a little bit of cleaning.    Under the protectors, aside from completely normal smudging, the bottom screen is fine. I'm thankful for the hindsight my parents had to put the covers on. My DSi looks fine (which I got when I was like 13, whereas the DS was from when I was 8 or 9), so now I know that in the time I have matured, I have learned to be gentle enough.
