Have you got an old Mac that is no longer supported by Apple? It's time to give it a new life.
How to install the latest MacOS on Mac hardware that is no longer officially supported using OpenCore Legacy Patcher.
I recently discovered this and it has been a game changer. Recently my partner needed a Mac for her music course, so we bought a 2012 Macbook Pro as it was cheap and on paper still had decent hardware for working with music. We were then disappointed to find out that it is no longer supported by Apple, and therefore can't run the latest version of Logic, which she needed to inter-op with the school comptuers. Just as we thought we had bought a less than useful computer, I found this video about OpenCore Legacy Patcher from Youtuber Action Retro.
It's a community made piece of software that allows you to install the latest version of MacOS on any Intel Mac, from the late 2000s onwards. All you need to do is download the application on a mac, it will then allow you to make a bootable USB drive for any version of MacOS you want, and you just need to choose the specific mac you are targeting from a list, and it "blesses" the bootable drive, allowing you to install it on your unsupported mac using the normal install process.
Tumblr media
I tried it and it it worked perfectly on the 2012 Macbook Pro, and the latest version of MacOS Sonoma is running perfectly well on the 12 year old hardware. It also allowed us to install the latest version of Logic, so it's working great.
Props to the team for making this and allowing hardware that would otherwise be e-waste to continue to be usable with the modern internet and software. If you end up using it, please consider donating to the team as apparently they had to jump through some serious technical hoops to get this working. Here is the link again if you need it: https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Legacy-Patcher/

On a semi related note the more I am subjected to Microsoft products the more I become convinced that the reason so many people these days believe themselves to be “bad with computers” is that the programs they are forced to use in their professional life are utterly incomprehensible to ANY rational human being and they are (rightfully enough) extrapolating out that this is just how computers are. They aren't!!! In their quest to remove all the “scary” details from their poor fragile end users Microsoft have created an ecosystem that behaves completely erratically and unpredictably and is by definition unknowable. Things just happen. Then they stop happening. Nothing ever announces why or how. Just a thousand vague and useless popups that may or may not be there tomorrow. I PROMISE computers are actually extremely simple and logical beasts.

Browsing HyperCard stacks on our RP2350-based Fruit Jam 🍏📂
With a little more tweaking, we've got a nice big 12MB disk image loading into our Pico-Mac port https://github.com/jepler/pico-mac/tree/rp2350-fruitjam to the Fruit Jam https://www.adafruit.com/product/6200 — that 16MB of internal flash is coming in super useful now!
That means not only can we run System 6 but also install some nice software like HyperCard https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HyperCard !
As kids, we loved playing and making HyperCard stacks, so it's neat to see that we can still navigate the classics on an RP2350. Many stacks have music or sound effects, so we'll revisit these once we get audio playback working.

'Bugdom'
[MAC] [USA] [MAGAZINE] [1999]
"Brian Greenstone and his pals at Pangea Software have a tradition of making attractive games-Weekend Warrior; Nanosaur; and one of the (Macworld Game Hall of Fame)'s all-time favorites, Power Pete. Pangea's latest effort is, quite literally, cute as a bug, and as such couldn't have a more appropriate name-Bugdom. Bugdom's goal is simple. In the guise of Rollie McFly, a colorful roly-poly bug, you must help free the ladybugs captured by ne'er-do-well fire ants under the control of King Thorax. To do so, you rush around the ten levels of Bugdom (these include The Lawn, The Pond, and The Forest) kicking down the spiderweb cages that contain the fair ladybugs, all the while avoiding or attacking your insectoid-and in The Pond, your piscine-opponents. No one does RAVE hardware acceleration better than Pangea, and it there-fore comes as no surprise that Bugdom is lovely to look at. But the game does require some variety of ATI 3-D-accel-eration hardware. If your Mac lacks such hardware, you can get it by adding ATT's Rage Orion video card to your PCI-based Power Mac. Bugdom's action is frantic enough for hard-core arcade gamers, yet nonviolent enough for children. Best of all, it's available only on the Macintosh." ~Christopher Breen, MacWorld (December 1999, "1999 MacWorld Game Hall of Fame")'
Well, it ain't a Mac exclusive anymore, but it is open source and on Itch.io now!

Game Atlas (Classic Mac, John R. Morgan Jr., 1996)
You can download it here (the latest version is 1.6.1) or here, and run it on modern systems by following the instructions below the screenshots.
Tip: use the Windows menu to open maps not currently onscreen. Includes full sets of maps for Legend of Kyrandia (available for digital purchase here) and Prince of Destruction. Never heard of that last one? Find my post about it here.

Open this in-browser emulator.
After it's finished loading, drag the file you downloaded onto the meulated desktop.
Open The Outside World, then Downloads, and open the file you'll find there. If no new folder appears afterwards, close and re-open Downloads.
Open the new folder and run the program. You can also directly open one of the included files.

truly so baffling to me to hear people complain about their electronics like my coworker was complaining that her 2017 Mac was so slow its barely functional and it’s like what do you MEAN your 8 year old Mac is dead? mine is from 2013 and runs flawlessly?? what are you doing to your $1000 machine ??? filling it with peanut butter and TikTok viruses?????
#and I’m fairly callous with mine. I’ll download anything. (although I am a tech guy so like I can think critically but#I do tend to download a bunch of random shit from like Reddit threads and forums lol) and yet my Mac is like practically mint.#his only crime is sometimes he dies at 20% and gets hot and can’t run 32bit programs (<apple’s fault)#he’s still running max graphics stardew valley with 900 mods and Minecraft mid graphics with 200 and like 30fps (<good for modded mc)#Apple truly making solid products considering every midrange windows pc I’ve used became garbage in like 4-5 years 🫥#ive spent more on my 4 windows PCs in the last 20 years than this one Mac that will probably keep trucking for another 10 years.#Like sorry im not an apple freak but considering how many devices I’ve bought used and fiddled with…… kind of incredible how Apple has#somehow managed to come out on top in the longevity/ease of use/privacy departments.#if windows didn’t force you to update and use their bloatware bullshit and not let you CONTROL THE MACHINE YOU BOUGHT id be less mad#but every time I use win 10 or 11 I want to shoot myself in the head. win1011 softwares practically feel like malware.#a day in the life of steeve#only reason I would ever have a windows device is to play sims 2. (works on Mac but no utilities which are indispensable these days).#and I’m thankful Emily has a top tier gaming laptop for me to use for sims <3#if I ever need another pc I think I’ll venture into Linux. my steam deck runs Linux and it feel so pleasant and friendly compared to win11.

HELP THIS M*A*S*H GRAMPA!
Apple idiot grampa from the 20th century needs tech help.
What I want/need:
play my blurays and DVDs on my iMac. With embedded subtitles.
rip said blurays and dvds to external drive so I can watch then whenever I want. With embedded subtitles.
Not spend a fortune in software to do this - will buy software if I need to, but only if it is necessary and/or just avoids many tears
a patient human who knows what they are doing and can talk me through this
cap'n dummy speak instructions to figure out how to do all of this-- seriously, talk to me like I am your 114 year old grandpa who just talks about M*A*S*H and remembers the days before the internet.
ideally not cry too much trying to do this.
(Yes I know this so all Steve Jobs’ fault that it ‘s really difficult).
I have:
the tech comprehension of a toddler in 1947
2024 M4 iMac (got it a month ago. Should be powerful enough for it)
Verbatim 43888 4k blu-ray and dvd player and ripper (cos that’s what people were recommending online).
The player did not come with software because they are dicks.
Have reached out to Verbatim mulptiple times to plead for help, they respond by all but telling me to get a PC.
Googled/looked on youtube for this. And it was beyond my comprehension, and basically said to download various softwares, which I have done, and still don't understand
VLC software (does not recognise blu-rays for playing, cannot figure out how to rip)
Handbrake software (not working. I used back in the stone age, tried both with dvds and blu-ray, it pixelated everything and did not embed subtitles, unwatchable)
MakeMKV software (cos that's what online sites said to get, can't figure out how to use it)
AnyMP4 mac blu ray player software (cos that's what online sites said to get, can't figure out how to use it)
I bought the Verbatim player on amazon and need to return it by the 8 February if it cannot do all of this. So if it's not possible, please let me know and I will return it asap.
If you help me figure this out and I can burn all my stuff off to an external hard drive, I will happily share some files in return with you (if you tell me how. Cos M*A*S*H Grampa). I have some less common/a few rare dvds that are not on streaming (which is why I want to rip them off onto a hard drive).
If you don't know how to help but do know someone who might, can you tag them? Thank you!
