Shin Soukoku Fanfic?
Who's been needing some shin soukoku fics because I sure have.
So I've decided to start writing my own. I really can't believe there's not as many out there like soukoku does but, of course they do. And if anyone has good reqs for me to read while I'm writing, I will take them! Please drop some reqs!
I'm only in the outlining phase but already getting really excited about it and will be releasing more information here as I get it fleshed out and start writing.
But for now I'll let you know it's a Shin Soukoku Hospital AU! Think, 5ft apart but also, not. Literally the best comparison at the moment. With many major characters involved and soukoku established as secondary characters.
Also will be mature/explicit with smut and some warnings going into it because I love to explore trauma! but really if you're a bsd fan how are you not interested in some trauma? My goal is to make myself cry so..do with that what you will.
If you're interested in this, let me know! Writing is frequently a very isolating and independent thing but I want to be more active and involved in the community in general but also with this fic! I'm alone too often as it is. So please come talk to me about bsd stuff!

BSD: Fighting over a Kill
That will always be my favorite AkYou moment like Ryou just wanting to kill people and Ryuunosuke I work Alone Akutagawa wanting Ryou out of the way. As Ryou holds a man ready to snap his little neck Akutagawa gives a glaring look daring him to do it. Staredown then a loud snap as Rypu kills the person. :') Ryou will probably get hit next.

Now that Dazai and Fyodor are going to finally actively start participating in all the chaos they have collectively caused in the world, I prepared a list of how many allies in total Fyodor has on his side and how many people want him dead asap before next chapter:
(This is just for fun; don’t take it too seriously lol. Also, Fyodor is an unreliable narrator so I won’t be surprised if he brings in new tricks and pieces to the table out of thin air)
In order of alliance:
F. S. Fitzgerald: Backstabbed, caused Moby Dick to fall, stole 40% of Guild’s assets, another attempt on his life to prevent use of God’s Eye (definitely wants Fyodor dead)
Agatha Christie: got the pilots from the Order to be poisoned and murdered (unsure about their alliance status)
Hawthorne: used as a mindless puppet; currently captured in Anne’s Room (he needs to wake up from his brainwashing for us to know his alliance status; probably hates Fyodor)
Shibusawa: sent him to his death eight to ten years ago at the mantiger’s claws, slit his throat again and destroyed his collection (dead)
Crime and Punishment: he and his ability are close acquaintances apparently (allies)
Ace: wanted to form an ‘alliance’; hanged himself (dead)
Goncharov and Pushkin from the Rats in the House of Dead: Goncharov is brainwashed and arrested; Pushkin doesn’t care about Dostoyevsky (how is he not brainwashed) plus he too is arrested (no help can be expected from either of them)
Mushitarou Oguri: found better friends in Ranpo and Poe (idk if he hates Fyodor but he won’t help him again for sure)
Nikolai Gogol: was supposed to die in the Wretched Chair Arc ‘according to plan’, escaped, wants to get rid of Fyodor because he was the only one who understood him (complicated, both of them need therapy and relationship counseling)
Sigma: got him shot by Hawthorne, currently allied with Dazai and Gogol in their plan to kill Fyodor (he just wants a home, guys. Someone please rescue him from these freaks)
Kamui / Fukuchi: Leader of DoA, struggling with all the it-didn’t-go-according-to-plan-! scenarios (like with Atsushi running away with his identity, Tachihara, Jouno, Bram etc.) so their alliance is definitely on thin ice (If anyone is to break this alliance, I bet it’d be Fyodor)
Bram Stoker: enemies with Fukuchi, joined DoA against his will, currently friends with Aya (and ADA) (definitely no alliance with Fyodor)
Nakahara Chuuya: turned into vampire, brainwashed, Dazai’s ex-partner, would he help Fyodor or Dazai? Find out more in next chapter! (shaky alliance)
People who hate him with a vengeance: Ranpo, Kunikida, Dazai
People who openly want him dead: Ranpo, Nikolai Gogol
Alliance strength: very very shaky
No. of allies: 4 (Fukuchi(?), Agatha Christie(?), Chuuya(!), Crime and Punishment(??))
Feel free to add more to this list! I might have forgotten some but guess this is pretty exhaustive

family
ship: pre-relationship akuatsu / shin soukoku, implied kunikidazai
genre: pure fluff
prompt: yosano hears that atsushi has never had a birthday party and she will not have it
notes: i wrote this for atsushi’s birthday! i love atsushi very much im going to give him the world
Ring, ring, ring.
The sound of his cellphone ringing is what brings Atsushi out of the dream world, feeling around his futon for his cellphone with his eyes closed until he, eventually, finds the damn thing.
He flips it open to answer the call, slowly opening his eyes and beginning to fully wake up.
"Good morning, Nakajima," says the voice on the other end of the call.
It's Akutagawa, which is rather strange as he never calls Atsushi.
"Akutagawa? Hey, you used my actual name!" Atsushi points out happily, sitting up, "Why are you calling?"
"Point it out and I'll continue to call you mantiger for the rest of your life," Akutagawa replied, taking a moment to cough away from the phone, "It is common courtesy to call and send birthday wishes on someone's birthday, is it not?"
Atsushi paused for a moment, "Birthday…?" He says, bringing his phone away from his ear to look at the date, "Oh, I guess it is my birthday, huh… but still, you hate me. Why would you do that?"
"It's complicated."
Atsushi rolls his eyes, "Sure. I'll get the answer out of you later. Thank you for the birthday wishes, though, Akutagawa."
There's mumbling in the other end of the phone as Atsushi gets out of bed, opening the closet door and stepping out. Kyouka had apparently already gotten dressed and left for work…
"Are you seriously embarrassed that I thanked you?"
"No! Why would I be embarrassed by that?"
Atsushi laughs, "Whatever you say, I'll talk to you later."
*Later? When I try and kill you again?"
"Probably. Bye, Akutagawa!"
Akutagawa stutters on the other end, to which Atsushi laughs a bit and hangs up, then continuing to get ready.
--
Atsushi gets off the train to the agency, walking in like everyday, only to see about half the agency in the room.
Dazai has himself draped across maybe three desks, lounging about carelessly as Kenji has Ranpo on his shoulders, Ranpo putting up decorations and banners with Yosano directing him where to put what.
Kyouka, Kunikida, Junichiro, and Fukuzawa are nowhere to be found.
It takes a few minutes for Atsushi to realize what the banner Ranpo and Kenji are putting up actually says, and another minute for Yosano to realize he’s here.
“Atsushi, hey!” She says, running over to him and giving him a hug, “Glad you’re finally here, happy birthday!”
Atsushi blushes for a moment, then smiling, “Ah, thank you Dr. Y-”
“Atsushi!” Dazai calls, sitting up from his spot over three desks, “Didn’t even realize you were here, how are you?”
Yosano releases him from the hug, and Atsushi turns towards Dazai, “I’m good, just, where is every-”
Within that moment, Kyouka bursts through the door with a kazoo, blowing through it half mindedly with a smile.
“Happy birthday,” she says.
Atsushi can’t help but smile back, “Thank you.”
“Food is ready in the coffee shop, courtesy of Kunikida-san and Tanazaki. Just about everyone else is already there.”
Dazai throws his legs over the desks and gets down, “Kunikida is an excellent cook, I assure you, Atsushi,” he says, throwing an arm around Atsushi’s shoulder.
Kenji sets Ranpo down, to which Ranpo sighs and sets the basket of decorations on the ground, “Finally, I’m starving!”
“Ooh, food!” Kenji exclaims, following closely behind Ranpo as they head downstairs.
Yosano ruffles Atsushi’s hair with a smile, “Kyouka-chan told me you had never celebrated your birthday before, we decided to change that.”
“Lesson twenty of being with the Armed Detective Agency, never underestimate Yosano’s ability to mother,” Dazai hummed along.
Yosano glared at Dazai, “Lesson twenty-one, I’ll kill you.”
Dazai laughs nervously.
Kyouka whistles from her place in the doorway, “Are you guys coming or not?”
“Coming!” Dazai replied eagerly, practically dragging Atsushi away as Yosano follows.
--
If the Agency was over the top in decorations, the coffee shop was even worse.
There were streamers and balloons everywhere, some of them had pictures of cats and bunnies drawn on them, which Atsushi could assume was Kyouka’s doing.
Tanizaki was slumped over the bar of the coffee shop while Kunikida was yelling at him, hitting him with a wooden spoon until eventually Dazai dragged Kunikida away from poor Junichiro.
Kyouka had disappeared back into the kitchen, while Yosano sat on the table, having a conversation with Fukuzawa.
Fukuzawa had dressed much more casually than usual, he wore a pair of jeans with a white tee shirt over a green long sleeve. The white shirt had a picture of Atsushi printed on it, with the words “this is my son, I love him,” printed on it in comic sans.
Given what Atsushi has seen on Fukuzawa’s other casual tee shirts, this was honestly the best outcome. He had a habit of wearing various tee shirts with the most random things on it, and owned a myriad of tee shirts condemning pedophiles.
Kunikida eventually sat down at a booth with Dazai, and Atsushi joined them in that same booth.
The booth behind them housed a very tired Junichiro, Ranpo, Poe, and Kenji. Ranpo and Kenji were having a nice conversation, something about cows, while it appears Tanizaki had fallen asleep on a very uncomfortable Poe.
Atsushi couldn’t help but smile.
Eventually, Kyouka and Lucy began to bring out bowls of chazuke, giving them out to everyone before Kyouka took a seat beside Atsushi, and Lucy sat beside Yosano and Fukuzawa.
“Everyone in the agency was well aware it was your favorite dish,” Kunikida explained, watching Atsushi stare at the bowl as if he had just met god, “Kyouka-chan insisted I try to make it.”
“He taught me how to make it too,” Kyouka added on, “Thank you, Kunikida-san.”
A slight smile appeared on Kunikida’s face before Dazai elbowed him in the ribs.
“And you say you don’t even like Kyouka-chan,” Dazai teased.
“Well, I don’t!” Kunikida insisted, elbowing Dazai back as Kyouka laughed.
The agency ate happily, at some point Poe attempted to get Tanizaki off of him and accidentally woke him, resulting in Poe deciding to continuously apologize and occasionally sob about it for the next hour and a half. Yosano threw one of her heels at Dazai after he said something about Yosano being over the top, to which Dazai swiftly dodged, and instead the heel hit Kenji in the back of the head. Kenji remained unphased, however.
By the time everyone was finished with the meal, Tanizaki removed himself from his booth and went back into the kitchen, returning with a two tiered chocolate cake he had baked himself, Lucy and Fukuzawa helping him hand out the pieces.
Fukuzawa ruffled Atsushi’s hair when he passed by him, humming something about Atsushi being cute over him shocked at the fact that Junichiro actually made such a cake.
With that, gifts were slowly handed out. Kyouka had gifted him a white tiger plushie, it was one of the first things she had bought with her own money, so she was incredibly proud of it.
Junichiro, on the other hand, gave him a set of hair clips so he could properly pin back his bangs without borrowing some from him.
Yosano gave him a set of new clothes, a sweater with a cat on it with a set of shorts and knee high socks. She assured him that all of it would fit perfectly, as she had already had his measurements, somehow. Fukuzawa had gifted him a couple different picture frames with photos of Atsushi with Kyouka, Dazai, or some even with Akutagawa. It was a very cute gift, Atsushi had hugged Fukuzawa right after receiving it.
Ranpo and Poe gave Atsushi a simple basic of snacks and such, mostly Ranpo’s doing, though Poe slipped in a couple different recipes and such into the basket as well. Lucy admitted the moment she gave Atsushi a gift that she had never really given or bought gifts before, so she wasn’t entirely sure what to do, though she gave him a couple boxes of bandages and a hand made cat plushie.
More and more gifts went by, and eventually it came Dazai’s turn, to which he handed Atsushi a simple box with a purple ribbon tied around it. Atsushi rose an eyebrow as he began to untie the ribbon and open the box.
Instead was a cropped purple jacket with cuffed sleeves that ended at the elbows, the sleeves could be unbuttoned and rolled down as well. There was a zipper, and pockets on the chest, and under the folded jacket were a couple of different iron on patches.
“So, it’s sort of a tradition from where I came from to give your pupil some sort of item of clothing, usually a clothing item of your own. However, I’m well aware that we are very different in fashion tastes, so I decided to go off script a little bit,” Dazai explained.
Fukuzawa looked at Dazai with a knowing smile as Atsushi slowly began to tear up, quickly rubbing the tears away as he slipped on the jacket, rolling down the sleeves before looking at Dazai with a teary-eyed smile.
“Thank you so much, this is all too much, you guys are too kind…”
“It’s nothing at all, Nakajima,” Fukuzawa replies, “The agency is like a family, we intend to treat you like such.”
With that, the door to the coffee shop opens, and reveals a young woman with her hands up, a bag resting on her elbow. She has medium length black hair, wearing a flowy black, long sleeve dress and a white trench coat over it.
“Don’t shoot the messenger!” She calls calmly with a smile, slowly putting her hands down and making her way over to Atsushi, handing him the gift bag.
Atsushi takes the bag, staring curiously at the woman before Dazai speaks up.
“Ah, Gin, it’s good to see you,” he says with a smile, “Is your brother too embarrassed to come in himself?”
The woman, Gin, nodded, “As you know, Ryunosuke is a coward outside of work.”
“Ryunosuke?” Atsushi asked.
“Akutagawa,” Kyouka replied, softly, “Were you not aware he had a sister?”
“Really? That’s a shame,” Gin replied a frown, “We’ve even met before, many times!”
Atsushi can’t help but look at her in confusion, scanning his memory for some sort of memory of this woman before it hits him.
“Oh. I’m so sorry!” He calls out, to which Gin just gives a smile, followed by holding two fingers up in a cute manner by the doorway.
“No bombs or anything, I promise!” She replied, then leaving the coffee shop and closing the door behind her.
“I feel stupid for not recognizing her,” Atsushi says with a nervous laugh.
“No need to,” Dazai reassures, “It’s her whole thing, she’s just teasing you.”
Atsushi sighs and shrugs, beginning to go through the bag.
The first thing in there is a yellow sticky note with messy, yet cute handwriting.
It reads, “From Ryunosuke Akutagawa, who’s too much of a little bitch baby to give this to you, Jinko-san! Signed, Gin.”
There’s a little heart at the end of the message, and Atsushi stifles a laugh.
Inside the bag is a soft, handmade pastel purple sweater, “Jinko” is neatly stitching over a white patch of fabric towards the top of the sweater. Below it is another sticky note, this time in purple and with much nicer, more elegant handwriting.
It reads, “Happy birthday. You’re foolish and I hate you. Please call more. -Akutagawa.”
Atsushi smiles happily, and Kyouka laughs.
“That’s cute,” she says.
Atsushi nods, “He’s kinda funny. Really bad with people.”
By the end of the day, Kyouka helps Atsushi bring everything home to their shared dorm, and Kyouka falls asleep almost instantly. Atsushi doesn’t keep her up much longer, but instead decides to sit in the kitchen chair, going through his phone when he gets a mysterious text.

Atsushi smiles, standing up from his place in the kitchen and deciding to go to bed.
As he lays in bed in the closet, he looks at his phone one last time, before drifting to sleep.
I did it, I’ve managed to live to turn nineteen, he thought.

Concept: stalker Akutagawa
(im going to start this out from a first person perspective, then it’ll slowly bleed into ryu’s perspective)
In the Port Mafia, it probably isn’t unusual to be assigned to follow certain people of high interest around, dig up dirt on them for blackmail and stuff, and Ryu’s probably learned how to do it as well from either hanging out in the pm, or from being assigned to do it at one point or another.
and he’s good at it.
he didn’t seem nearly as shook as he should’ve when he saw suddenly Dazai for the first time in  4 years as part of the ADA, for me at least, and i’ve figured out why. He knew exactly what dazai was doing and where he was; the man taught him how to stalk others and how to stalk them well.
He kept his distance because he knew Dazai was a traitor, and thus he was a traitor for staying loyal to his mentor over the port mafia, for choosing not to turn Dazai in. but he hadn’t expected Dazai to show up that day, to protect his peers and his new student because the Dazai he knew would’ve let them all die, and he hadn’t accounted for this change of personality.
for years, he had been following Dazai on every day off, checking up on him after work, watching him every moment he could. He even posed for that picture Kunikida took of him, fully aware Dazai would see it soon. He knew it was stupid, but he wanted to look cool for the first picture his mentor would see of him in years.
Every room his mentor regularly entered was bugged; Dazai was a man who relied on patterns to do the boring day to day stuff such as going to the same convenience stores and banks and cafes when he bothered to go anywhere; using the same car when he chose to take one and the same spot on the same car of the same train every time- or within several paces of it when it was unavailable; and of course each of these changed around other people. Each and every one of them was bugged with at least audio or video, if not both, and easy enough for Ryu to access on a daily basis. He knew almost everything his mentor said and done; more than anyone else and better than Dazai himself could remember. It had nearly killed him when Dazai said he was just a mafioso, and he knew nothing else about Ryu until he had thought about it some more and realized Dazai must have been protecting him as well.
With Dazai, all signs of affections had been the kind that had to be read in between the lines. the abuse had been because dazai wanted to make him stronger, he wanted him to survive once his mission had started. the gun, the shooting had been dazai’s way of saying he was strong enough, ready to stop bullets with his ability; that his mentor believed in him. It hurt for awhile that dazai had shot him because back then, he thought dazai was trying to kill him, but it was the opposite. dazai knew he was strong and wanted to prove it to him. And that’s what it was here too. How else would Dazai tell him he cared except for protecting him as he did? keeping his identity and location secret, despite easily being able to give it all away; he had been to ryu’s apartment more times than he would ever care to count and could have visited, but dazai didnt because he cared about protecting Ryu from the ada and the pm just as much as Ryu cared about protecting dazai’s current identity
there was a certain degree of selfishness in both of them for the way they handled it, neither choosing to maintain contact for mutual protection from their organizations, and even upon confronting dazai, the man pretended to be clueless, but Ryu wasn’t so easily fooled by his lies anymore; especially those with good intentions.
he started leaving gifts for dazai.
he started small with bandages, or small piles of change. a stuffed animal. a picture of corpse of the rude citizen who yelled at him in public dead in a shallow grave, then more as the dirt began to cover the body. Maybe he had gone too far, too fast that time, but he slowed down for awhile after that. back to simple things like a new pen in package he had mentioned liking the feel of in his regular convenience store, new bugs in his new convenience store after he switched; Akutagawa was a little hasty with the previous gift, giving away Dazai’s favorite store with a gift as risky as that. a bondage kit after he had tied up Jinko with his bandages, and more bandages as well. Ryu stole the ones that had been used for Jinko’s bondage; the mantiger didn’t deserve the privilege of being tied up by the brunette like that, not when Ryu had worked under him for so many years, and protected him for even longer. the hand of the ability user Dazai defeated, numbers drawn on the palm so he would know.
that one couldn’t be traced, but unfortunately, it couldn’t stay in Dazai’s care for long either. Hours after giving the gift, Ryu took it back, leaving a polaroid picture for him to admire in its place. He couldn’t stand the thought of dazai not finding it, so he left it near Dazai’s face as he slept and took a picture of his mentor like that for his own records.
he looked so peaceful like that, his caring nature shown through so clearly whilst he slept. the small smile, for once, genuine upon his lips. his brown hair spread out around his head; soft and messy, it smelled partially of almonds and lavender. Ryu shared that smile with him for an hour before taking his leave, the small moment of intimacy staying close to his heart.
Dazai had taken care of him once, so now it was his turn to take care of Dazai.

subway stations and other examples of fate
The fanfic nobody asked for in which Akutagawa and Atsushi first meet in the subway station. Needless to say, Akutagawa misses many trains from then on.
read it also on ao3 at: https://archiveofourown.org/works/23407966
Enjoy!
Akutagawa was already five minutes late to the meeting, yet he didn’t move when his train shut its doors and departed. Instead, his eyes were fixed upon a small figure hidden in the shadows of the subway, hunched and wearing a tattered shirt with a tiger printed on it.
Jinko, mused Akutagawa, the nickname brought to mind by the blouse the boy was wearing.
The figure was leaning on the balls of his feet, arm limply outstretched as he precariously leaned forward, towards the edge. He seemed unaware of his surroundings, and intentionally so.
A whistle sounded. The headlights shone blindingly bright as the metro approached, yet the figure gave no sign of intending to move as he hunched even further forward.
Akutagawa cursed as he rushed to the small white-haired boy and grabbed him by the collar, pulling him back just in time for the train to arrive with no incident. The boy was limp in his grip, not struggling against it; he stepped back only when Akutagawa let go of him.
“You didn’t need to do that,” the white-haired boy said, eyes wide and unblinking as he stared at him.
Then, the mantiger walked away without saying anything else.
Akutagawa coughed, taken aback by the lack of any serious reaction. He stifled his unexpected flash of anger and sat down on a nearby chair to wait for a train, mentally swearing all the while.
The second time Akutagawa saw the boy, they were again in the subway station. The mantiger was once more perched on the edge, his clothes somewhat tidier this time as he crouched with his hand outstretched, appearing more resolute than last time- what the boy was resolute about, Akutagawa couldn’t tell.
As Akutagawa approached him (not that he cared about him, thank you very much), he noticed that the boy was actually speaking.
Well, not exactly speaking. He was letting out the sound that most people make when faced with shy cats, a continuous and pleading ‘psps’.
Akutagawa, still unnoticed by the white-haired boy, crouched next to him and glanced around them for the cat that the boy was trying to coax into letting him pet it. His eyes caught on a pair of red orbs half-hidden in the darkness of the subway tunnel.
“Jinko, are you trying to pet a subway rat?” he incredulously asked, realizing too late that the nickname he had associated with the small boy had slipped out.
Bristling at the nickname, the mantiger said nothing for a couple moments. He only glanced at Akutagawa and his eyes narrowed.
“Oh, it’s you,” he muttered, shifting his attention back to the rat and turning his body away from Akutagawa. It was clear that he considered the conversation over.
But Akutagawa, to his own surprise, opened his mouth to attempt to get the boy to speak again; before he could utter a word though, a voice pierced the silence that had settled over them.
“Akutagawa-senpai, the train’s here!” shouted Higuchi, waving at the boy as the metro stopped and its doors hissed open.
Sighing, Akutagawa stood up from his crouched position and patted invisible dust off his trousers. As he was walking away, he heard the boy murmur a small ‘see ya, Akutagawa’.
Akutagawa was very glad that his back was turned, and therefore his smile was hidden from the boy. The last thing he wanted anyone to know was that he could feel things that weren’t anger, exasperation or aversion. It would ruin his reputation, he mused as he hid his smile with a cough and entered the train with Higuchi by his side.
“Do you have any other clothes except these, jinko?” asked Akutagawa the next time they met, inclining his head in the direction of the tiger-patterned shirt.
“Stop calling me that, Akutagawa! I have a name, y’know?” said the boy, decidedly ignoring the comment about his favourite shirt. He scooted further from him on the bench they were sitting on.
“You do?” asked Akutagawa, hiding his curiosity behind a condescending sneer.
“Yeah. Not that I’ll tell you though.” He laughed when he beheld Akutagawa’s surprised expression.
The black-haired boy decided to change the subject while he still had his dignity.
“Say, what were you doing next to the edge the first time we met?”
The boy’s expression visibly shuttered into one of neutrality, but the response was too slow for the flicker of pain in his eyes to remain unnoticed by Akutagawa.
“Trying to pet the rat, of course!” he smiled, but the expression was too wide and forced for it to be sincere.
Akutagawa remained silent. It was none of his business after all.
The silence was starting to become heavy with unspoken words by the time Akutagawa’s train stopped and its doors slid open. He stood up and glanced at the boy, but none of the dejection he’d first glimpsed there was visible.
The smiling expression was tight in place and Akutagawa could see no cracks in it. He had no reason to remain, even if he suspected that the boy was lying- yet he didn’t enter the train. Instead, he sat back down next to his companion as the doors shut and the metro departed.
“What are you doing?” asked the boy, surprised. “Weren’t you supposed to take that one?”
Akutagawa huffed and placed his hands in the pockets of his coat.
“You don’t know which train I’m supposed to take,” he snapped. Then, somewhat softer in tone: “I’ll just take the next one, jinko.”
“You can call me Atsushi,” he smiled and averted his eyes when Akutagawa glanced at him. “Everyone does.”
“Who’s ‘everyone’?”
Atsushi’s smile faltered and he shyly rubbed the back of his head.
“Well, I guess there’s no ‘everyone’,” he mumbled. His smile was now back on, though ironic this time.
A chime echoed against the subway station’s walls and the train zoomed in and stopped in front of them. Hesitant, Akutagawa glanced at Atsushi as he stood up.
“Go,” the boy murmured and gestured for him to leave.
Reluctantly, Akutagawa stepped onto the train. His eyes never left Atsushi’s small frame, although the white-haired boy was decidedly not looking at him. The last thing he noticed as the train started moving was that Atsushi’s eyes were carefully blank.
It was two more months later that Akutagawa walked in a coffee shop and stumbled upon his former mentor.
“Akutagawa-kun~” called a voice the boy knew all too well (and strongly disliked). Dazai swept into the boy’s field of vision, his smile as cheery as ever. “Fancy meeting you here of all places!”
Akutagawa’s lip curled at the sight of the man. When noticing his involuntary shift in expression, he instantly turned it neutral; Chuuya-san had really started to rub off on him.
Dazai grinned and the boy’s stomach tightened at the implication of the expression. A Dazai was never good; a smirking Dazai was even worse. The brunette glanced over his shoulder, still smiling.
“Come here, let me introduce you!” he called at the person behind him. “This is-”
“Akutagawa?” murmured a familiar white-haired boy as he appeared next to Dazai.
“Jink- Atsushi, what are you doing here?” sputtered Akutagawa, his eyes wide in surprise. “What are you doing with-” a dirty glance “-him?”
“I got hired!” cheerfully replied Atsushi, searching a couple of his trousers’ pockets before finding a card and handing it to Akutagawa.
Dazai suddenly lost interest in the two and walked off with a breezy exclamation of ‘Chuuya! There you are!’.
“Atsushi Nakajima, junior detective- Detective Agency,” read Akutagawa. “Congratulations,” he said and handed Atsushi back his card, not even his aversion to the Detective Agency managing to erase the sincerity in his smile.
He felt a stare on the back of his head and he quickly covered his smile with a cough, looking away from the slightly-blushing Atsushi. Both of them suddenly became incredibly interested in the tiles covering the floor as they heard Dazai snicker behind them.
“Ne, Chuuya, have you gotten any interesting cases lately? Need some help?” Dazai was grinning and it was obvious in his voice.
“Shut up, shitty Dazai!” retorted the redhead, but it lacked its usual incredibly intense hatred.
“Oh my, stop it with the pet names in public!”
There were the sounds of a scuffle- and a cry of pain coming from Dazai, then they both became silent.
“I wish they’d just make out already,” silently grumbled Akutagawa. He started when he realized that he’d said it out loud.
Atsushi laughed, and the sound was so sincerely happy and burden-free that Akutagawa found himself staring at the smiling boy. Their eyes met and neither of them looked away.
The light in Atsushi’s eyes was brighter than when they’d first met, realized Akutagawa.
It was the furthest from anger, exasperation or aversion Akutagawa had been in a long while.

Or, alternatively, the fanfic nobody asked for in which Akutagawa and Atsushi meeting in the subway station. Needless to say, Akutagawa misses many trains from then on.

I physically cringe whenever I read a fanfic and Akutagawa calls Atsushi kitten. this man has no idea what an acceptable nickname is he calls Atsushi mantiger as a term of endearment most of their relationship

AkuAtsu and 20
There you go, Anon. Here are the prompts, feel free to send some!
20. Things you said that I wasn’t meant to hear // AkuAtsu
"Mantiger," he mutters, trusting the wind to carry his words far away, "why?"
His partner was further at the front, talking to someone.
"How can you dream after all that?"
Countless fights and endless screaming. Battles that only leave ashes and regrets mixed into red behind. Even if he closes his eyes he still can see the wounds.
"How can you smile like that, despite all the injuries?"
Torn, hurt, go—
The other's laughing and something is settling in the pit of his stomach.
"How can you forgive them? Or forgive me?"
Dazai never taught forgiveness, never taught the gentle side of a battle.
But then again, forgiving isn't a gentle business. It rips you apart at the seams of your heart. He’s learned it in the cold of the rain.
"How can you…"
He stops speaking to look at the other. He's smiling happily.
"...How can love me," he mutters, unable to look away, "Atsushi?"
Later, when he catches up with the others, Atsushi grabs his hand tightly.
"Aku," he says, smiling brightly as he swings their hands around, "recently I dreamt of chazuke!"
Akutagawa raises an eyebrow.
But then Atsushi continues.
"You were there too, eating with me!"
Atsushi won't remind him of his tiger senses.
Especially not, when he notices the warmth in his lover's eyes.

Inconveniences, jinko. Not all of us are in the fortune to be conveniently pampered and spoiled by other's. Your concern is almost insulting. /the mantigers words however touched him despite the harsh denial in his answer/
