This might get long so I apologise in advance but I literally woke up and this was the first thing my brain thought of so. I'm sharing!

I’m thinking about how whenever Yang went through something fucked up - something that would stop any other regular person in their tracks and it would be completely justified if it did (See: Maria), Yang has always kept going.

It’s been a part of her characterisation for so long, that she’s ‘strong enough’ to get back up and, well, keep moving forward… no matter what she has endured.

When she learned that Summer Rose wasn’t her mother, and her real mother had chosen to leave her, she carried that pain, let it motivate her, and she kept going.

When she was framed in front of the entire world for something she, and only she knows for certain she didn’t do, she kept going.

When she lost her arm, and in the same breath lost her partner who meant so much more to her than she could process - it hurt. No one would’ve blamed her if that was it for her. When her sister, who is one of the only people in the world she knows without a doubt she loves also leaves her after this tragedy, somehow, despite it all, she keeps going.

When she finally finds her mother, and watches as she once again rejects her and chooses herself. Allows her own daughter to be once again put in the line of fire instead of her… oh I’m sure, that cut deep. But she kept going.

When her partner comes back, eyes lowered and asking for forgiveness but knowing it wouldn’t be given so easily, she opens her arms, thereby letting herself be vulnerable to that type of loss again, and keeps going.

When she, alongside someone besides her sister she knows she would do anything for, is forced to kill her partners abuser and her own assailant, she picks her partner back up and she keeps going.

When the picture of what happened to her mother, Summer Rose, becomes clearer - when the story starts unravelling and she learns something no one should ever have to learn about their deceased parent… it’s almost enough to break her. But she chooses her love and trust in her sister, and keeps going.

When she saw her sister’s life in danger, she charges forward and intercepts the fatal blow, which sends her careening into the unknown. I’m sure, she wanted to keep going. To stay by her partner’s side and be there with her team for whatever came next. She didn’t get that choice. But it was okay, because it meant her sister could keep going in her stead. She was okay if this was the end.

When she opened her eyes and found herself in an unfamiliar place, she had already accepted she was dead. This was okay, I’m sure. As long as Ruby and the others didn’t also fall. She found herself armless, and still went on to fight a jabberwalker alone. Even in her presumed death, she kept going.

She wasn’t dead, it seems. And neither were her teammates, who she’d accepted she may never see again, when they show up in this strange place with the same questions she had. Together, they keep going.

But this. This threatens to break all of that. She watches, feet rooted to the ground in horror, as her baby sister chooses to leave her. Chooses to ‘not be here anymore’. And she finally stagnates.

Yang has always kept going. And the one thing that threatened her ability to do that just disappeared right in front of her. Of her own volition.

And that is the straw that breaks the camel’s back… because I don’t think she can keep going anymore.

Museum conservation, Ship of Thesius, and Becky Chambers

Cave person posting but this is making me miss being around museum people , and it also is my opportunity to ramble about Record of a Spaceborn Few by Becky Chambers

I love that book and idk if I'll ever reread it. But part of it follows a character who is living on some ships original to the human Fleet aka the ships humans left Earth in. And the character doesn't think much of it, being born and raised there. But they're talking to someone from a different system, and that person is like "this is ORIGINAL?! this would be in a museum back home " and the human character is like "...? It's a handle on a pipe? What's the big deal?" It was an interesting moment because of the perspective shift, but also because of the ... implicit conversation about age, preservation, use, and value? Like idk when is a house something to preserve and conserve for its history, and when is it something to live in and change/damage/modify?

I think at first when you first arrive they just assume that you are like most others at NRC and are just anti social since it is a school for villains 

But once you become more acquainted with them all and have a friendship with the rest of them they start to become more and more concerned with your behavior because they think that as friends you should be comfortable coming to them when you need help, especially after you have helped them so much with all that you’ve done 

I think riddle can really relate as it seems that when he wasn't being micromanaged he was being neglected at least emotionally so he knows the feeling 

Malleus and leona also understand, malleus has always just felt so alone that even tho lilia was a good parent he's never really had a lot of people in his life, leona has always felt second best or has been ignored so they also understand 

At first i don't think that any of them say too much, really they are trying to make you realize that they do in fact want to hang out because they enjoy being around you

It's even worse if they like you because they dont get why you are so distant

Eventually they call a intervention lol and have a sit down where they give you pseudo therapy to help you

They really try to hammer it home that you don't have too feel like you're not good enough and that again they do want you to be around them 

They also tell you that after all you've done they genuinely want you to come to them if you have problems or need something

Ok specifics time 

Riddle really relates to your issues, even though his problems are like on the opposite end of the spectrum he also struggles with feeling like he has to do everything on his own, he tries to help you the same way you helped him. He likes inviting you to tea and all but interrogating you on anything you may need help with. Definitely helps you study 

Leona is less forward about his affections/making you feel better but he has his own ways. If he sees you on his way to the botanical garden he is dragging you with him and you are TAKING A NAP. he doesn't give af you are napping with him and you are gonna be so snug. In leonas mind he hates people disturbing him when he's napping so having you with him when he's napping means that he doesn't see you as a disturbance. It's really sweet. He also relates to feeling pushed aside and neglected so he makes sure to give you extra attention. 

Azul is well versed in insecurity and while his stems from self image and body images, he still understands it at the core. He's bad at this really, he wants to be there for you but the shady octopus is struggling big time. He decides that having you for dinners is a good idea, the lounge is nice and peaceful as you eat a tasty dinner together, he takes the opportunity to ask if anyone has been bothering you lately, old shady habits die hard. 

Jamil cooks with you (i feel like jamil's idea of cooking with you is you sit on the counter and eat the little treats he gives you while he does the real cooking) jkjk he likes cooking with you because it allows you to both be close and do something you enjoy, but it also lets you both get a little treat at the end (the treat is his cooking because its god tier) 

Vil makes it known very quickly that he will not be standing for this behavior. He's putting an end to it one way or another, hence your now shared morning and night skincare routine. Well it's more like doing each other's routine, he teaches you the steps, you do his and he does yours. Whole nine yards, im talking matching fluffy headbands and those cute face masks as a treat. Normally he wouldn't get them but if a hello kitty/fun face/eye mask makes you happy then he will indulge (only after triple checking the ingredients because he does not play games)

Idia games with you, either separately or together in his dorm he loves playing videogames with you, especially ones like “it takes two” (amazing game btw) he's very antisocial so he hopes you understand how close he feels letting you into his room to game with him because literally no one else gets this kind of SS+ 5 hearts treatment 

Malleus is the worst offender because if you thought the dragon was already kinda clingy after this info is revealed it is 100% worse. He feels the need to show you all the attention he can to make up for lost time, the same way having you as a friend (and potentially more than a friend) has made up for manyyyyyyyy years of loneliness in his mind. The night walks are his favorite, hand in hand as you both walk along in silence, even with the silence he occasionally chimes in with little words of affirmation. If you want to talk he is so happy to listen, eventually you find that hes quite the yapper, happily talking about anything you will listen to and hoping that you yap right back at him.

It’s been hours. And the two of you still hadn’t talked.

You pull the covers tighter around your body. Surely a pseudo comforting mechanism to make up for the phantom cold you were feeling. It was an emotional chill, not physical. This might be the first night in a long while that you might go to bed alone, and it’s certainly the first night in a while you aren’t going exactly willingly.

You and Gale had a huge fight. You can’t even remember what started it exactly. It was something small. Simple. Yet it seemed neither one of you were willing to get over your mole hill and now there was a chasm between your two mountains.

Playing the fight over in your mind, you were trying to figure out where you went wrong….

“You’re being ridiculous.”

“I’m being ridiculous!” You snap back at Gale. “Ridiculous. Yes. I’m being ridiculous because I asked you to help out in your own house.”

“And I said I would get to it later!” Gale snapped back. He rubbed his temples with his hand across his eyes. “Gods above, would it kill you to have a little patience from time to time??”

“Perhaps. If we had it your way we’d still be on that beach by the nautiloid for how long your ‘laters’ take.”

Your husband glared at you. “Insulting my character. My, what a fine fall we’ve made for decorum in this house.”

“I’m not insulting your character, Gale. But what about you! You just called me ridiculous and that’s not insulting my character?!”

“It’s not insulting your character if it’s true! And you’re being ridiculous!”

It had all gone downhill from there. More insults. More backbiting. You both said things you didn’t mean, like you saying you should have stayed in the Gate if this was how things were going to be and Gale wishing he still had his orb because it seemed the only way to get out of this conversation.

He had taken off not long after that with an “I’m done” and stalked off to some remote, quite corner of the tower to cool off. You hadn’t seen him since.

Now that the fight was over, and night was closing in, you wished you could talk to apologize. But you didn't want to be the one to go to him. You didn't want to 'lose'. Which you knew was toxic and childish, but you couldn't help the way you felt.

So, that never happened and for the first night in a long while that you go to bed alone. Quiet tears on your pillow.

The next morning you wake up. Face puffy. Eyes red. No real sleep to call your own, so you went downstairs to get coffee.

You find Gale already there. His own cup in his hand. Looking equally disheveled and un-well rested. But, and most importantly, another cup across the counter in front of him. It’s steam wafting up from the mug so you knew it was fresh. Cautiously, you move to the counter and take it. “Are we still fighting?”

“Do you want to keep fighting?” Gale asked back. Not trying to instigate the fight again, but gauge your commitment to continue it.

“No. I don’t.” You sip your coffee carefully. Even though you’re fighting, it was still perfect. “Where did you sleep?”

“In my study.” There is an ornate couch in there. Leather. Expensive. More of an art piece than a comfortable piece of furniture. His lack of sleep may just be from trying to sleep on that rather than the tossing & turning you did last night. “I didn’t think you’d want me.”

“You could have come to bed.”

You probably wouldn’t have talked, and it would still be ‘cold’, but it was still his bed too. “I don’t like it when we fight.”

“It’s not my ideal way to spend an evening either, my love.” Though he said it his ‘my love’ doesn’t have the same warmth in it it normally does. “Look…I’m sorry if I upset you.”

“I’m sorry too.” You apologize back. “I didn’t mean to….”

“We both said things we didn’t mean.”

The two of you sip your respective coffees. Not really sure where to go from here. Yes, you apologized. The fight was over. But apologies weren’t like the incantations Gale threw around all the time. They weren’t actually magic words to make all the hurt you felt a moment ago go away.

“Do you want a hug?”

He didn't say anything, but Gale sat down his coffee and came around the counter to you. You both wrap your arms around each other, but it’s awkward. Stiff. There is love between you in the hug, but that chasm you built last night was making it harder to each one another. It would fill. You both would mend. But for now it was just going to be a little uncomfortable around the house.

The two of you separate and go back to your coffees. Sticking to safe topics like what you would like for breakfast. Hopefully you couldn’t disagree to harshly on that.

Chapter 2: Intimacy and Exposure

By mid afternoon, you and Megumi are both exhausted with your full course load. You both major in biology, no emphasis right now. Megumi loves animals, so he will probably pursue something veterinary later. As for you, you’re undecided. You chose biology because it’s very general and broad, and also so you could be with Megumi more. You would never tell him that, though. You just say “idk maybe some science-y crap” and shrug it off.

You weren’t able to get lunch, so you both decide to visit a coffee shop after your last class of the day. A snack and some caffeine would help get you through for a while until you decide what you want to eat that night.

Megumi orders his usual black cold brew and muffin. The barista asks how to spell his name, and giggles? Is she flirting with him?

“That’s a cute name…” She says as she writes it down on his cup. “And for you…?” She barely glances at you.

You’re not sure how you feel in that moment. Was she flirting with Gumi? Am I jealous? Why is my heart racing?

Sitting around the table, you both have your laptops and books out in front of you. It’s been a couple hours of studying, and you’re ready to take a break.

“Gumi, can we take a break and watch something? If I read the word bacteria one more time I’m going to go insane.” You tell him more than ask, already getting up out of your seat. You’re yawning, walking straight towards your bedroom, not even bothering to wait up for him. You already know he will follow.

“What do you wanna watch, Gumi?” You ask as you scroll through different apps.

“Whatever you want, you have better taste in movies and shows.” He doesn’t really care, he just savors the opportunity to be close to you. He lies behind you, almost touching but not quite. He’s close enough to feel the tickle of your hair. He feels weird thinking that your hair smells nice.

You choose some random comedy show, not caring to pay any attention. You just wanted a chance to rest and turn your brain off for a while.

Megumi moves a little close, resting his hand on the side of your abdomen. This isn’t the first time you’ve been close to Megumi, you both used to cuddle under the same blanket on cold nights or huddle under one when playing games as kids. But for some reason, now it feels different. Maybe it’s because you’re hyperaware? It has to be that, right?

Your heart beats faster, your skin feeling warm to the touch with every movement he makes. Does he notice? Is he aware of these things too? Am I overthinking things?

An hour passes by, but it feels like an eternity. You’re so hyperaware that every second feels like 20 minutes have passed. He hasn’t done more than gently caress the side of your body. He doesn’t seem to be making any advances. So why is this so painful to endure? Why does a simple touch make your body feel hot, with something pooling in between your legs?

Megumi is aware. You think he isn’t, but he can tell. Your breathing is irregular, your pulse is uneven, your skin is hot. He notices, and it drives him insane. But he’s respectful, he wouldn’t try anything. You are basically siblings with how long you’ve known eachother and lived together.

It’s getting hard to breathe. Even the lightest touch sends jolts through your body. You turn around to meet his gaze, with a look he’s never seen before. Your face is red, you’re struggling to breathe, while looking into his eyes like you know his secret. He’s flushing too, starting to sweat, feeling heat spread through his body. Your eyes are intoxicating to Megumi.

He looks at your eyes, then your panting lips, and back to your eyes again. He’s thinking of everything he wants to do to you, he doesn’t care if it’s wrong.

He touches your cheek, caressing you gently. Your breath hitches as he’s so close to you. He runs his fingers down your neck, before he pushes you to your back. It’s not forceful by any means, but mostly surprising.

He’s on top of you, pinning your arms to your pink bedsheets as he leans down towards you.

“Y/N…” he breathlessly speaks, “tell me if you want me to stop, okay?”

You definitely do not want it to stop. You’re staring up at him with your doe eyes, unable to control your breathing. He leans in closer, his face not even an inch away from yours.

His lips crash into yours. You’re surprised, you didn’t think he would be so intense, and this good at kissing. He’s biting your lip, trying to elicit little yelps and mewls from you. What's good about KnH is (besides its main char and bc of Maomao) the way it manages the power dynamics and what life was as a woman without falling into utter pessimism and powerlessness or full romanticism; which is a reason I usually avoid like the plague historical/pseudo-historical fiction with female leads.

Usually I'd be super skeeved out by the power Jinshi has over Maomao but the way the series presents both of them, their personalities and their agency (limited as it is for Maomao but it's there and it counts very much) it brings out all the best and interesting parts. I trust this series to get twisty with them bc it establishes so well Maomao own character and understanding of her situation and the ways Jinshi can and does or doesn't take advantage of his power over her.

Like. It's presented as a problematic element, but also unavoidable given their social situation and the world they live in, so I can trust given everything else this show has done when solving the mysteries and presenting us the situations of other women, that the romance will be treated with that same weight.

Honestly if you've read over what I like to read/watch in my tumblr you'll notice that twisty and even toxic/unhealthy dynamics are very much within my favorites, but it needs to be told in a certain way. And I'm much more difficult to satisfy when talking about het romance.

So to watch KnH, notice it's primarily about Maomao life and the various misteries/medicines/palace intrigue and the romance is playing second fiddle riffing on all the themes presented on the plot? And it's complex, and plays with messy power dynamics of gender and class, but never loses Maomao her personhood? Wow.

Also. Jinshi is so BL chara coded omg XD like, he's very clearly based on a kind of shojo ML prototype (hello tamaki suoh!) but it also pulls from BL in his case (nothing to do with their romances but I think of Yan Xiaohan re:his relationship with the imperial power, from Golden Terrace lol)

And yet his romance with Maomao wouldnt work near as well for what is trying to say if they weren't a man and woman (which I love in their case, is what has me fascinated). Yes~! Get into the meat of how fraught it is for a man and a woman to be together when the man has so much power over her. Get into it!!!!

He's so so messy and fun as a chara too. Sheltered and not at the same time, you really notice all the things he misses by way of his privilege of being a noble born man (and specifically royalty, last ep (19) left that very clear he was doing a ritual probably by proxy for the emperor and also bay exchanges people. Maomao noticed and buried that thought far far below her subconscious but we all now who he is lol). Like. The way he fumbles and ends up essentially harassing Maomao at the start sometimes, which is both played for comedic effect and also upsetting. Mmm.

Like I said, I like complexity.

Also that part when he buys Maomao contract and he goes to collect her and she's all dolled up, and the clear implication by everybody but our mains (who clearly prefer to live in willfully blind land although for Jinshi I think the subtext of what he's doing lands when he sees her) is that in any other case she'd be his concubine/side-wife. It's not their situation wight now, and she's put to work as a live-in maid and apothecary and put to study (he wants her to assist him in politics lol I love that, but also he's so so lonely) but it's very much what the palace rumor mill says.

LIKE. I love the messiness! It could go soooo badly, but it also could not and there's Maomao living at the edge bc despite herself and what she says, she wants more from life, but also as she says the rear palace isn't all that different from the high class brothels and ugh. That tension. She has to depend on the favor of a man as a women of low class but she also could lose her head! GAH. And then there's feels involved! Aaagh.

I said before that Helluva Boss haters are very weird in how their perception of the show is often completely broken from the truth of what the episodes show us. And all of the haters are freaking out about the Apology Tour episode and pointing out Stolas is a rapist and the show is trying to "glorify" sexual abuse (they are LITERALY pulling off the same card they tried to pull off in Hazbin Hotel, not understanding that when you make one HUGE mistake it is preferable to not repeat your big offensive take TWICE)...

(By the way how come I keep seeing the haters freak out over the episodes that are not the actual bad ones? There are bad episodes in Helluva Boss, and yet the haters never manifest themselves when it comes to these very obvious weak spots. They just start foaming at the mouth with all the other episodes... Anyway)

So here's my point: when you look at all the rants and comments and "pseudo-analysis" of the Stolas/Blitzo relatonship, you do end up realizing that these haters either didn't watch or don't remember the way the beginning of this "sex bargain". Remember the VERY long scene showing when Blitz had sex with Stolas for the first time? Well here are the facts I see NOBODY among the haters bring out:

Blitzo was there to steal the grimoire. He tried to break into the palace to steal it, all throughout the scene he was only focused on getting the grimoire ; he only played along Stolas' ideas and "seduced" him in hope to distract him while he stole the grimoire ; and he did end up succeeding in distracting Stolas with sex to get the grimoire because... point number 2:

Notice how no bargain is struck, there is no talk of the grimoire, Stolas never realizes throughout the scene Blitzo wasn't into him but into his book, and the fact Blitz literaly snuck away with the book while Stolas was still asleep (one of the rare points of continuation from the Pilot episode) does indicate he was still stealing it without Stolas knowledge. It is very clear that their "sex bargain" was only struck AFTER this incident - and this is a part of the story the show has not covered.

Another thing of note: Blitzo tries to kill Stolas to steal the grimoire, before ending up deciding he can have sex "real quick". This is played for comedy and these are VERY clumsy murder attempts, but the biting at the neck and the breaking of the neck WERE Blitzo's attempt at murdering Stolas to steal his book. Though Blitzo clearly didn't know then that a little imp can't hurt like that a Goetia demon.

And the final point: nothing and nobody forced Blitzo to start this whole thing. Nobody forced him to steal the grimoire: he did it solely in an attempt to start his just as reckless business plan to go to Earth to kill people ; a plan and a mean for a plan which is explicitly said to be illegal in Hell, between imps being forbidden to go to Earth and the grimoire that should NOT be lended or given or used by anyone other than Stolas himself. Also nobody forced him to have sex with Stolas, he just decided to play along to cover his tracks. And that's the whole point of Blitzo's character: he is reckless, careless and doesn't think through or plans the consequences of his actions. He thinks he can just steal a grimoire from a demon-prince without realizing what it means, he goes to Earth without a disguise because he didn't study anything related to Earth travels, when caught he tries to kill Stolas without realizing it won't work... That's literaly Blitzo's character.

And as an aside note, it is also interesting to see how Blitzo and Stolas are both depicted as selfish, or more precisely not selfish but as self-centered, this is the correct term, but in very different ways. Blitzo is self-centered in a reckless, destructive, careless way - he just does what feels right on the spot without thinking of the consequences, he flees or tosses away anything he dislikes without understanding any responsibility that would come with it, he puts up dreams and projects just because he wants to without planning anything. Which is the perfect reverse/companion of Stolas who is also self-centered, but simply because he is a sheltered naive fool and a literal delusional dreamer who projects his own state of mind upon others, feeds himself with cliches and fiction rather than actual reality, and keeps switching between over-analyzing and under-analyzing everything.

And that's precisely these two forms of self-centeredness that allowed the very fucked up and messy and thorny relationship they are in to happen in the first place. Blitz thought he could steal/murder/have sex with a demon prince just to get what he wants, and that there would be no consequence or difficulty along the way ; Stolas was a dumb owl who clearly didn't understand the person in front of him was a criminal not at all into him, and mistook a robbery for some sort of romantic movie scene...

But haters choose to literaly recreate in their mind a completely different scene than what is shown to us. If you listen to their rants it will seem Stolas forced Blitzo into taking the grimoire or opening his business, or that Blitz was an innocent victim somehow dragged into Stolas palace by the rapist owl... When what we rather see is a very stupid criminal doing a very clumsy and messy robbery and ending up entangled in an uncomfortable relationship entrapment + constraining sex-deal, because he literaly didn't give a fuck about anything and tried to avoid the consequences of his actions any way he can, only to literaly get everybody's careers, lives and feelings on the line (making Moxxie and Millie's lives for example dependant on the use of a stolen good used illegally and only kept by a precarious and shady deal).

And such a character is... well literaly most of Brandon Rogers anti-heroes in his own Youtube-series, so you can clearly see how indeed he is the one writing Blitzo.

(And to those of you that claim it is unfair Blitzo gets all the shit thrown at him while Stolas gets nothing, if the leaks I got accidentally spoiled by are true... [putting this under a cut]

then don't worry dears, Stolas will also have to face the consequences of his actions, it will be HARSH, and definitively much harsher than what Blitzo is currently facing. )
