16. Came Back Wrong
It’s a training day. The faceless shadows Master Deloscuro through Mizrah Atara. When he beckons by crooking a finger, they are there. When he hands his shopping lists to the merchants, they carry his baskets. When his bootlace unwinds in the middle of a crowded plaza, they fold to the ground clumsily to retie it.
“Correct, Pravde.”
The town militia watches them carefully. Shoppers give them a wide berth. Vendors tuck their cashboxes away. They can feel the stares. They don’t know why.
Master Deloscuro stops at a cafe for lunch. He eats slowly; he’s old, his hands shake sometimes. He spills soup down his chin. Pravde wipes it away.
“Correct, Pravde.” He gives them a slice of bread. They hold it carefully until he tells them they’re allowed to eat. “Correct, Pravde.”
Later, Master Deloscuro meets with the employer of another of his patients. Pravde waits outside.
They are performing well. Master Deloscuro has not had to correct them once today. They glance through the window; Master is having a cup of tea with the employer. Pravde relaxes slightly and watches a pair of birds dip and twirl overhead.
The birds startle and vanish. There’s movement across the street. A lanky gargylen seems to detach from the stone wall.
“Pravde!”
Pravde does not know this gargylen. Is this part of training?
“Prav, it’s Smiley!” The gargylen looks both directions before running toward Pravde. “We thought you were dead! The guards hit you so hard, Prav, Liliko wouldn’t stop crying - why won’t you come home?”
Pravde has not been given permission to engage. They stay quiet.
“Prav, Lili and Bee miss you, please just tell them you’re okay-”
They have been performing well. They will not engage until Master Deloscuro tells them to.
The gargylen is crying.
“Pravde, can you hear me? Why won’t you talk to me? Are you in trouble? Did we do something? Pravde!” The gargylen puts his hands on Pravde’s shoulders.
“Hey!” Master Deloscuro is at the door. The faceless stiffens. This gargylen is impeding their orders in front of him. “You there, hands off! We’ll call the guard!”
The gargylen bolts back to the alley. “Prav!” He screams.
Master Deloscuro looks Pravde over. “Are you hurt at all? Did the boy do anything to you, take anything?”
“We. Are not. Damaged.” Words are difficult, but Master looks satisfied.
“You were correct not to talk to him, Pravde. We’re done here; let’s go.”
Pravde follows the man away with the gargylen’s pleas ringing around the street.

On their way back to Midgard, Atreus and Calliope visit Skjöldr’s place, Denmark (formerly known as Skjöldrland, the happiest place on Earth)! There, Calliope meets her new chaotic older sis, Thrúd, and dorky older bro Skjöldr XDD
I adjusted Thrúd’s design to make it more Valkyrie-like, given that she’s likely finished her training by now. I have another version that includes the fur skirt she wears in the game, but decided to leave it out for this drawing XDD Also, I couldn’t decide on which coloured version to include, so I went for both of them! (let’s imagine the second version is when they’re inside a lodge or something loll)
Also, I think Skjöldr could use a hug ^^;; Being the future king of Denmark is hard work! So I thought of a scene where Calliope brings him a flower crown; she wants to thank him for having her outfitted in a new dress to suit Midgard’s cooler weather!

fandom psa; there is nothing whatsoever that is inherently "problematic" about shipping characters who are "found family."
Adoption is not found family. A blended family is not found family. A found family or chosen family is a group which, through circumstances or simply mutual affection, hold their relationship to one another with equal care and importance as family members ought to. It's not the same type of relationship.
It's not incest. It's not even pseudo-incest unless you want it to be. I personally don't care what people ship, but I'm absolutely tired of people misusing the term "found family" to just recreate the idea of a nuclear family and force those roles onto the entirety of a fandom. Sure, maybe characters who are found family may view themselves like siblings, or like a parent and child or aunt and niece, but they might also just see each other as friends-- and guess what? romantic partners too! That's technically the most widely-accepted form of found family/chosen family there is!
The whole point of found family/chosen family is to have the importance of "family" on relationships that lie outside the commonly-understood bounds of that relationship. Not to recreate the "mommy-daddy-daughter-son" dynamic with unrelated characters and use that headcanon or fanon dynamic to enforce your own morality or preferences on other fans.

“In my eyes you will always be one of the greatest.”
This quote from Despicable Me 1 got stuck in my head especially hard after I watched Minions The Rise Of Gru in 2022 and got hyperfixated. I like to imagine the father-son relationship Gru and Nefario had off-screen between these movies. I like to think doctor could say something like this to Gru when he was little to inspire him in his future career.
(monochrome version under the cut bc I liked how the values work on this one)

No thoughts, just Arven and the MC being fucking siblings.
He calls you little buddy and you're the best friend he's ever had and he also thinks you're an annoying little shit who runs headlong into bullshit like it's routine. And it's not like you're any better. You follow him around to unsafe locations just because he asks. And if that means going to area zero because he doesn't want to go alone, so be it! Ride together, die together, baby!
His whole plot routine is finding the herba mystica to heal Mabosstiff, and yet he still leaves enough ingredients left so that you and him get to eat sandwiches afterwards as a little reward; he's like a big brother getting ice-cream after an after-school soccer game. And when Miraidon/Koraidon begs for sandwiches Arven makes some for them as well because you insist that your big lizard dog deserves it and Arven can't argue with the oldest trick in the younger sibling book: pestering.
Also teaming up to defeat a parent is big time family mood. So is comforting your sibling after you both feel bad about it.
You can fight me on this. I will give Arven the family he deserves, and it starts with MC because this boy has so much siblingless-big-brother-of-the-group energy that I refuse to let it go unacknowledged He will be a brother because I say so. Also, look at him. Huggable.

𝐃𝐄𝐀𝐓𝐇 𝐎𝐅 𝐀 𝐇𝐄𝐑𝐎 — the young vidyahara!reader who consistently followed the man who’s face is familiarized through the universe. A bounty higher than they can count at that age. He remains silent to ignore the little dragon who was more than curious to know more about it him.
He knows you. You knew him. He wishes he didn’t. You wished you didn’t did.
She points you out to him which practically forces him to acknowledge you. He was only here to aid in an mission, a script that has nothing to deal with you. And now here he was sitting with you, sitting perfectly still. There would be photos of how you were trying to copy him.
Were things going well on that planet? So well that he nearly found himself chasing you down desperate to find where you went. You were too far away for him to easily catch you. You were too far away to recognize the man who you thought would be your ‘protector’.
He couldn’t be of blame in that situation. Holding the sword that has cracks within it that was waiting to be reforged once more and hovering near the bodies that laid still. His mara-struck state was taking a toll. Which was worsening the longer you were absent from his presence.
The planet wasn’t to big nor to small. He had limited time to find you. He wasn’t the best with words, but for your sake he’ll be damned to lose you again.
“Wherever you are, I’ll explain things that should be saved for later. Just know that I’ll be here, (Name).”
