i dont know what autistic person needs to hear this but your sensory wellness is so important. and that goes beyond just avoiding things that trigger immediate distress. sensory enrichment is vital too! do things that make you feel safe and comforted and happy and alive. it's not insignificant. it's not silly. it's part of taking care of your lovely autistic self and enjoying life. your life, which thrives when your wants and needs are met.

When I first started thinking I might be autistic I would ask my friends and family what they thought. I always got some form of “but you don’t have a schedule” or “you don’t do routines”.
This morning I was getting ready for the day and declared that I wasn’t going to wash my hair because I didn’t want to deal with it. What was the first thing I did upon entering the shower? Get out my shampoo because that’s the way I start a shower. So I was caught standing in the shower with a fistful of shampoo trying to decide if I should waste the not-so-cheap shampoo or just cave and wash my hair.
Then I was getting dressed and I picked up my top. I was immediately repulsed by the idea of putting it on before my jeans and threw it on my bed. Why? Because pants go first.

Unwarranted Advice
I'm a child of the rust belt, born of bible thumpers and the fear of god, yet the cursed words flow from my mouth.
I've accepted my place, below the wealthy hills and hiding in small town Appalachia.
My mother preaching "Remember who we come from" as we drive down the road. Her and my father knowing so well how pride can blind a man.
Still here I sit, like a child in the principles office as people my age and no clue of my life talk down to me.
Speaking on simple rules and regulations broken, not enough to warrant a meeting but still I sit here.
I understand I curse like a sailor at times, and sometimes I drink. I know my place and time, I hide from the world and yet here I sit on the metaphorical chopping block.
How should I pray for forgiveness when they are not without sin ?
I feel like I hold the a barbed wire crown, I refuse to wear it and be the martyr.

Autistic Problem: when your safe-shoes you weared for the last 9 years totally fell apart today and now you don't know what to wear tomorrow for your appointment... because you had only this one pair of shoes and you know exactly that you will have a very hard time when you have to wear shoes that 'do not fit', but you have to.

I found a book the other day and it’s a kids book but it was about sensory issues and the main character was a dinosaur and I related to it so much that I started crying so my mum brought it for me 🥺

Getting a diagnosis finally broke the spell my parents had put on me for my whole life. The spell that said it’s rude to be on your phone at dinner or to wear ear plugs/headphones around others. Getting diagnosed finally let me seek out accommodations to make me more comfortable in a world that isn’t built for my autistic brain. It helped me know that it’s okay to not make eye contact with strangers and that I can wear pajama pants all day if I want because the fabric is Right. I am disabled. This society isn’t built for people like me, but I can make my little corner of it a little more bearable.

In your opinion, how often do ADHD and autism overlap?
I'm medically diagnosed with ADHD, but a lot of my friends (in good faith) ask if I have autism
What do you think? Is it common for people to have both?
-@the-new-ginger-switch
Well, you might be autistic as well. Most autistic people I know (not all of them, but most of them) also get an ADHD diagnosis. Autistic people have a higher rate of being ADHD, and vice versa. I am autistic and ADHDer.
You can try to get a proper diagnosis, but make sure to find a therapist that knows a lot/keeps learning about autism 😊

I despise how little sensory issues are taken seriously bc im working at a hospital and one of the patients requested for no cucumber with his salad and when i delivered it i realised there was cucumber after all, and i asked him if he could pick it out and he said he could still taste it on the rest of the salad and he sounded quite distressed so I got him a new one made without cucumber but it wouldn't have happened in the first place if they had listened to him. It's a private hospital that he paid good money to be in, the least we can do is prioritise his comfort.

So some people in my life like to deny my autism. If they keep at it im going to show them this picture. Why is this significant? I can only eat eggs 2 ways. Scrambled with onions cooked in with little bit of salt mixed in or this way.
Now i am not sure what to call this. Its essentially a fried egg but its slow cooked so it doesnt become super hard yet all the white goo is fully cooked. It takes alot of butter\margerine\oil too or it will burn and I cant eat burned eggs. Its like a mix between boiled and fried.
No restaurant I've been in knows what this is and cant mimic this to my instructions. I will gag and throw up if the white stuff is not fully cooked. Or if the middle is too runny. The yolk has to be softly solidified but yet not completely hard.
People have said to order over medium. I have done that...the white goo around the yolk is not always solidified and the middle is still runny. I've asked for medium hard but the places I go to don't seem understand what that is because it comes back too hard.
This is an autism thing i think. Otherwise I hate eating eggs and wont touch them. I even yack at boiled eggs sometimes because the middle is too dry.
So....food sensory issues are a thing. If an autistic child has food sensory issues its cruel to make them eat things that they literally cannot tolerate.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.
