Just curious, without capitalism which parts of autism do you think would still be disabling?
For the purpose of this question, let's assume that all my basic needs are met, I contribute to society what I can without it adversely affecting my health, and I have some disposable income and time for enjoying life. Personally, I would still struggle with the following non-comprehensive list:
Speech delay. I didn't start talking until I was three, and my mom had to speak for me to strangers, relatives, doctors, waiters, etc. into my teens.
Bullying and social ostracism. Even controlling for factors like social class, autistic people are hated and shunned precisely because of our struggles with social interaction.
Sensory overload. I would still experience intense pain in overstimulating environments, which includes "mundane" places like grocery stores, restaurants, and my own home (i.e., not just in a job setting).
Meltdowns and shutdowns. As a result of the former, I would still have exhausting episodes of uncontrollable distress and bouts of depression and burnout.
Anxiety. Changes to routine, unexpected events, and new situations are distressing even if they're good things like meeting with friends or going on a date.
Emotional dysregulation. I struggled with self-harm from middle school through college.
Trauma. Autistic people are especially susceptible to abuse of all kinds.
Comorbidities like IBS, insomnia, and a weakened immune system.
Proprioception, motor coordination, and clumsiness.
I could go on, but I think this gets my point across. And keep in mind that I have lower support needs. There are many autistic people who have more support needs than I do. Their lists would be even longer. Capitalism makes life hell for autistic and allistic people alike, but my disability would not disappear even if I lived in a utopia.

And while there is an element of like- yes someone caught out of time and the unique tragedy of everything being so slightly different. Its tiring in a way that’s hard to describe, where the food isn’t bad but it’s different than what’s familiar. It’s just. Far too easy for me to look at her and see myself in some of her things. -☁️ (sorry, I sent the other one a bit soon)
Same! I can't wait for their hangouts both it's gonna be insane!
(Also yeah, the inherent tragedy in your safe food being out of fashion for 50 or so years, must've been hell)

Everytime I think about the first psychiatrist I saw to have my autism diagnosed and doubt about having autism bc of what he said I remember.
I remember when, years ago, someone I know told me that one day she woke up in so much pain she was unable to stop screaming. So she went to the doctor. Doctor said it was something that'll pass, that she doesn't have to worry, that it's nothing. Her father still took her to the hospital (thanks to her grandma who yelled at her son after hearing her granddaughter scream)
It was her appendix
If they'd waited more time before doing surgery on her she would have died. She nearly died during the surgery actually
So yeah. Whatever that one doctor may have said to me
He was the one in the wrong

Who doesn’t love to play a good board game? Games are great for building social communication skills, turn taking, and a great way to target language goals! Here are some tips for incorporating language during gameplay:
- Following Directions: Directions can be as simple as “Get the Adams apple.” or as difficult as “Before you get the wishbone, pick up the butterflies in the stomach.”
- Best games to target following directions: Operation, Candy Land, Connect 4
- Early Language Goals: There is so much to talk about during games! Narrate you and your child’s moves as you play. Being a great language model for your child is very beneficial for their language development.
- Best games to target early language goals: Don’t Break the Ice, Pop the Pig
- Question Formulation & Comprehension: Guessing games are a great way for kids to create and answer all different types of questions.
- Best games to target questions: Guess Who, Headbanz
Check out the blog for examples of how to incorporate language into play and a full list of games we love!

Personal:
Serious questions going out to the Autistic community...
Does your pyschatrist scare you? As in a real fear and intimidation? Mine "doesn't deal with autism," so when I go inside, the nurse practitioner comes in too. She knows enough sign language and is patient enough to listen when I am able to speak. He forces me to be verbal, and when I can't be, he gets really angry. He really scares me... He was really mean, and it looked like he wanted to jump over his desk and hit me at one point... I don't want to go back to him... but he's my fourth psychiatrist in a year and a half. My family doctor thinks I'm being too picky... This is the doctor who holds my daily life in their hands... They either literally just ghost me and move across the country, pass me off, mess around with medications that I don't even need to begin with, and one tried to unsafely reduce my dose of a benzo. I've been sent to the hospital before for that... I was forced onto a medication that ruined my sleep and gave me mood swings. He was trying to reclassify me as bipolar instead of borderline... I got to hear his "notes" on me. All is said was "blank is manic behavior." He said that buying 12 dollars in phone themes in a month (each one is $3-$4) was me going on a spending spree. Oh, and the longest phone call I've ever had with any psychiatrist (after my first) has been about 12 minutes.
Does anyone know how to apply for a caretaker? I am a very easy target for abuse. I don't know how to respond, and I can't speak. I don't have social skills, and i can't name my emotions in detail. I sign mad or sad or explain a physical feeling because I can't go deeper into details about how I feel, I guess. My wife says it's hard for me to speak about emotional intelligence (i probably really misquoted her, but it's the best i can do)... I try to get my wife to attend my appointments, but she works. If she is my caretaker, she would get paid full time to take care of me, which means I could have her help with all of my appointments and even eventually a job.

SpeechGears Speech Therapy Tools: Clarity Of Speech | Autism Speech Therapy Activities | Benefits Of Speech Therapy
Tumblr media
Both toddlers and adults can benefit greatly from speech therapy tools. Speech therapy for kids can reduce their general difficulty of speaking, early language development, and preparedness for school. It can aid with swallowing and vocal quality and boost independence and self-esteem. Speech therapy for adults can help with particular problems and benefit social and professional lives. Additionally, speech therapy can improve a person's capacity to speak, carry out daily tasks, pay bills, and more. It can also help with relationship building and brain growth.
