Duke is unapologetic for everything that comes out of his mouth. In fact, give him a mic, he'll say it louder.
Some way too old for that guy, trying to flirt with Cass: You know, you seem so mature for your age…
Duke, popping out of nowhere: And you're really fucking dumb for yours, man, fix this puddle of desperation on your head first and only then think about trying to fit into society. If even your hair doesn't want to be with you, what are you counting on?
Cass, who really didn't want to ruin her cute dress with blood: 👍🏻
A really annoying paparazzi: Hey, boy, how does it feel to become rich after, well, whatever you were before? Have your, erm, extracurricular activities changed? What's your favourite thing to do now?
Duke, with the straightest face known to mankind: No, it's still your mom. My favourite extracurricular activity, planning to do her more actually, thanks for the question.
Bruce, trying to parent a whole ass teen: So…
Duke: I really shouldn't have told this terrible, rude, insufferable piece of person to go eat shit. I genuinely regret it. I should have told her to go eat shit and die choking, such a missed opportunity, damn, I'm still upset.
Bruce: ...
Bruce, to himself: Why am I even trying?
There are a bunch of compilations on YouTube and Tiktok “Duke Thomas-Wayne has no PR training whatsoever”. Duke personally likes every single one of them.
#he thinks he is funny#because he is#it's hard to teach him manners when you're trying your best not to burst into hysterical laughter#he's not learning btw#batman#batfam#batfamily#duke thomas#still on my Duke kick as you can see

something so crazy-making about unhealthy mentor-protegé relationships. we're foils, we're mirrors, we're the same person, we're a parent and a child, we're lovers, we're enemies, we'd be better off without each other, we'd kill and die for each other
#its literally all walter and jesse: you're the only one i can teach and i'm the only one you can learn from#don and peggy: we're building the desert of the real and you're the only real thing there#house and chase: please free us from our bad show so we're more than just the potential for being interesting

look. here’s the thing. If you have a relative or family friend or some such who does a craft/hobby/skill that you’ve “always wanted to learn” you should ask them about it. Your grandma does embroidery and you want to learn? Sit down one day, or call her, or write a letter, or something, and say “I am interested in learning this craft.” There’s basically zero chance that Uncle Francis is gonna refuse to teach you about his model ships. Grandma is THRILLED to show you her quilting. Ms Barbara from the church bake sale WILL teach you how to make the fudge that made her second husband propose.
your friends and contemporaries are also a tremendous resource, and you should ask them too! But there’s just no replacement for the expertise of someone who has been knitting for sixty years. Part of this, also, is that older crafters can often give you materials to help you start, and your broke millennial friends usually can’t. My mom has more wool than she will ever use in her life, and she knows it. When one of my friends wanted to start knitting, my mom just gave her this gorgeous silver handspun yarn she’d made but wasn’t attached to. Yarn like that is expensive! Handspun yarn from someone who has been spinning for thirty years doesn’t often happen to beginners! And starting with good materials is better than starting with bad, because it helps you develop taste and a sense of quality more quickly.
Experienced crafters are often able to help you avoid learning bad or damaging habits—as a teenager, my sewing teacher spent a lot of time teaching me how to do things so that I didn’t get repetitive stress injuries (like she did). They’re going to be able to lend you books, send you ancient angelfire html pages with the most exacting instructions on earth, show you the good places to get crafting supplies that aren’t am*zon.
But you have to ask. Do not wait until these people are dead, and then say “I wish I knew.” You have to do it now, while you can.
#so you can inherit their stash in ten years#crafts#crafting#your older relatives and community members want to teach you!#you can learn insane gossip at Jeanie’s quilting club!

“I have a foreboding of an America in my children's or grandchildren's time -- when the United States is a service and information economy; when nearly all the manufacturing industries have slipped away to other countries; when awesome technological powers are in the hands of a very few, and no one representing the public interest can even grasp the issues; when the people have lost the ability to set their own agendas or knowledgeably question those in authority; when, clutching our crystals and nervously consulting our horoscopes, our critical faculties in decline, unable to distinguish between what feels good and what's true, we slide, almost without noticing, back into superstition and darkness...
"The dumbing down of America is most evident in the slow decay of substantive content in the enormously influential media, the 30 second sound bites, lowest common denominator programming, credulous presentations on pseudoscience and superstition, but especially a kind of celebration of ignorance...
"We've arranged a global civilization in which most crucial elements — transportation, communications, and all other industries; agriculture, medicine, education, entertainment, protecting the environment; and even the key democratic institution of voting — profoundly depend on science and technology. We have also arranged things so that almost no one understands science and technology. This is a prescription for disaster. We might get away with it for a while, but sooner or later this combustible mixture of ignorance and power is going to blow up in our faces."
Carl Sagan & Ann Druyan, The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark (1995)

I just realized. One thing that Optimus will certainly be educated on by the Primes in the Haunted AU is the various was One Can Kill A Quintesson! Leaving some Autobots confused at times when he's teaching them in return because 'This sounds pretty Specific...???'
It's slightly competitive on the Primes' part because yeah, the Deceptions do got the High Guard being good at killing Quintessons too but. They're the Real Experts. (Are they salty? Naaaah they're not. Much. Kinda.)
AKJSHDK YEAH YOU'RE SO RIGHT I LOVE THAT <333
they got so good at squishing the goddamn bugs and they're thrilled they can save Optimus the pain of figuring out their weak points through trial and error like they did. they're gonna make a pro out of their baby brother in no time.
and if they just so happen to know some of the Decepticons will be majorly pissed off at the fact OP is already on par with the best of what used to be the High Guard when he only has a fraction of their experience... well, happy coincidences, y'know?
and if they happen to teach Optimus how to crack open a Quintesson in just the right way to make some Decepticons see ghosts through him... that's between them and the people they're haunting :)
haunted au
#hey i got an ask#funsizedkola#transformers#transformers one#tf one#optimus prime#tf jazz#haunted au#my art#i am. so sorry this took so long. there's literally no good explanation i don't know where time went OTL#on a different note!#this ask reminded me of one of my favorite tf fics ever. it's called 'Nor Is He Early' and it features a delightful version of the matrix#and the role of prime that i haven't found anywhere else#it isn't really that similar to this au but it does feature OP being able to access the memories of previous holders#and some of those memories are about how to kill quintessons and all the trauma that comes with that#delighful i tell you#i think in this au optimus *can* access memories from the thirteen#but they just prefer to teach him the normal way#mostly because they think it's better from optimus to learn things in his own body rather than from someone else's memory#but also because those memories are Not Good. optimus is already going through his own war and they'd rather he not carry#memories from another one he wasn't even alive to live through#and if he struggles to pick something up they prefer to show him through memories of sparring they did with each other#and the high guard than to show him real battles#they Know it's no use. optimus had already died once before they even met him. they won't be able to protect him from this war#nor any other that comes next. but still they can't help but try#so... yeah ajshdjksa

actually one of the most beautiful things about hacks is that we can be changed by anyone and at any period in our lives. deborah was in her forties when ava was born. she’d lived a life longer than ava’s before ava even existed yet they both have had a profound effect upon each other. it’s never too late. you haven’t met all of the people who are going to change you yet.
#hacks#hacks hbo#if you’ve read journey of souls ava and deborah are surely in each other’s tight 7#(at least i think it’s 7 my friend and i misremember it every time)#anyway it’s about how there’s a certain subset of people who are meant to be in your life and teach you profound lessons#the idea is your soul lives many lives. and across these lives these people are there to help and change you and make you grow#and it’s very tempting to be like ‘let me identify my seven now’ but likely you haven’t met them all yet#i can surely identify 4 of mine but i know i haven’t found them all#anyway i got off topic a little bit. the idea is that we are here to learn and grow from this life#and our soul continues to progress across the various lives we live#a life like deborah’s is crazy - so it’s interesting to think what her lesson is this time around and what ava is meant to teach her#love it. love it very much. thanks for letting me go off. not sure who i’m thanking

may I suggest the “Everyone breaks” / “But not you.” / “Everyone breaks. Even me” conversation for an angsty Batfamily fic? Bruce calmly explaining to each subsequent Robin that there will be a point where everyone — even him — will break under torture. because to break is to be human, ultimately. their job, just like Bruce’s, is to hold out long enough that breaking isn’t yet a possibility. long enough to be found, to be rescued, to be safe. your job is to banter, to deflect, to drag things out and speed them up where applicable. to keep away from your breaking point at all costs. because you will break. it’s not a question of if, but when. and knowing exactly where that breaking point is for yourself will always be an asset, not a liability. the people who go into interrogation assuming they will never break - those are the liabilities. they will break hard and fast because it is so unexpected.
or, the one where Bruce trains Robins to outlast torture methods that have put JL members on the floor, but it’s not because he trains them physically. it’s a mental game, and his birds play it like masters.
#have I ranted about this before?#I feel like I have#this line feels familiar lol#oh well#tw torture#tw injury#tw torture mention#batman#bruce wayne#dc#batfamily#Robin#more room for LoA angst here too#Bruce knows his breaking point and learned this secret over time#so his kids don’t have to#he teaches them the mental game first#instead of beating it into them like the loa did

I feel like ppl focus on Bruce training the robins to kick ass from a young age when that’s definitely not all that was. He had to teach them field medicine and how to pick locks and sneak around silently and how to notice things, sure he taught them how to hit things with sticks of multiple sizes, but he also taught them how to grapple around and land from a fall.
They probably had intimidation lessons and interrogation lessons and sessions where they just meditated for hours straight. They’re taught how to calm down civilians and to train their voices to sound different in costume and so many things that would make them the most terrifying children to live with.
Bruce is actively training them to be good at bothering him because they like trying out their new espionage skills at Galas and trying to sneak around him while he’s asleep to prank him.
When we think of training to be Robin it’s easy to think of sparring and gymnastics equipment when it’s fun to remember the other parts of it. Some days Bruce would probably just give the kids a Hunt a Killer box and a time limit.
#I think he’d get weirdly into making training exercises with oddly specific parts#by the time they’re out on the streets they have a lot of tools in their belt not just literally#like just to use batarangs they’d have to practice with darts and throwing knives and then get to batarangs#there’s a target range for grappling guns and smoke bombs and and approx 15 different weapons they have to learn#they would have to have a surprising amount of medical knowledge and various detective skills that definitely make any adult that finds out#-very concerned#they’re taught how to recognize fear toxin and if they’re hallucinating and what to do to keep themselves safe#batman would not go halfway with this shit man#he would be a good teacher as long as he’s teaching the most crazy shit#Bruce Wayne teaching self defense classes in Gotham would go hard though it would be funny#batman and robin#batman#batfamily#batfam#bruce wayne#dick grayson#jason todd#tim drake#damian wayne#stephanie brown
