I write to you as a citizen of your district/state/precinct.

I and my community have grave concerns that President Donald J. Trump's excessive abuse of power within only two weeks holding this prestigious office demonstrates nothing less than an overwhelming and blatant disregard for our Government, our Democracy, and the democratic process. It is a budding display of despotism with a tyrant's actions and words, not an American president's. He and his administration, including 'special government employee' Elon Musk, show zero honor for the Constitution upon which this great country was built.

Yet, we are to trust that he and his administration will faithfully uphold the Constitution? I'd like to outline a few specific instances of particular concern:

1. The memo freezing federal grants and loans:

He overreached and abused his power via this unconstitutional act. Federal spending power belongs to Congress, not the president.

2. Birthright citizenship removal:

This attempt violates both The Bill of Rights and The Constitution, two documents upon which this nation was founded, built, and grown. This attempt shows that he disrespcts each and that he cares nothing about his presidential duty to uphold and defend these documents, what they stand for, and who they protect. He, therefore, shows no regard for the United States of America. And I fear this disrespect and disregard can and will go further.

3. Emoluments Clause violations:

He launched a crypto currency which directly violates the Emoluments Clause. This president Donald J. Trump (and potentially his family or beneficiaries) profit directly from his position and crypto currency to the tune of a few billion (at least). I, personally, have no issues with crypto in itself. I do take issue with an already proven shady public figure profiting via difficult-to-track means by which he could easily send and receive funds or bribes from potentially dangerous foreign entities. He also stated he would do so to varying degrees during his campaign. These actions require a thorough and unbiased investigation from those who are not tied to or purchased by him.

4. Public comments about "rigging" or "stealing the election":

He and his associate Elon Musk publicly made comments suggesting that they may rig the election against the voters leading up to Election Tuesday on November 5th 2024. This point should have already been acted upon via a federal investigation of all parties involved, Elon Musk in particular. The time-sensitive data of voting records demanded and continues demanding such urgent attention.

5. Repeated discussion surrounding the use of political violence:

Donald J. Trump and some of his associates repeatedly spoke of using political violence and/or blood shed so that he may forgo American political procedures and have his way once he got in office for this particular term. He used such verbiage against former NIAID director Anthony Fauci, former national security adviser John Bolton, former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo, and Pompeo's top aide Brian Hook. These individuals received death threats against their persons and families once President Donald J Trump stripped them of their security and protections. Donald J Trump also threatened them about social media posts (specifically in the same manner and to the same audience as the January 6th insurrection, including the violent criminals he personally pardoned in said insurection). If another president or government official made similar statements, let alone carried them out, they would certainly face almost immediate criminal charges reaching levels akin or equal to domestic terrorism. President Donald J Trump should not be exempt from such swift action either.

6. Threats against long-standing American allies:

Donald J Trump also threatened long-standing allies, like Mexico, Canada, and Denmark, with either conquest or seizure of land via military action. Our allies did not provoke these statements. He is currently transforming our peaceful borders into hostile territory and beloved allies into potential enemies. I can only think that he does this purely for bombast and ego. No logical human being of sound mind who cares about other citizens would act in such a way.

7. Undermining the First Amendment on The Bill of Rights:

Donald J Trump took bribes from, sued, and threatened with violence opposing journalists, news organizations, social media platforms, and average individuals for speaking up about or reporting on things that don't shine him in a flattering light, including all of the above. He proves time and time he doesn't care to uphold nor honor the Bill of Rights.

Not one of the listed actions come from a true American president but a rising Dictator and Tyrant. Congress has explicitly defined three forms of misconduct as grounds for impeachment;

• “Improperly exceeding or abusing the powers of the office” (First, Second, and Seventh instance above)

• “Behavior incompatible with the function and purpose of the office” (Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth instance above)

• “Misusing the office for an improper purpose or for personal gain.” (Third instance above)

In the instances listed, Donald J Trump explicitly violated each and every one of these definitions.

We hold you and your cohorts as our elected representatives to stand in defense of our democracy, our government, and the United States of America. Push for the proper investigations, trials, and impeachment of Donald J Trump and his party. The inaction we have seen over the last 4 years regarding this man has been unacceptable. Unprecedented happenings require unprecedented and urgent actions before it is too late.

nonnie?? that's so sweet of you to say, thank you😭🩷 in general, a lot comes to mind bc there's so many different components to writing (i.e dialogue, characterisation, structure,, even mindset!!) so if you want to hear abt anything specific pls lmk🥺 for now tho, i've summarised a few across the subject that i think are helpful, and they will be below the cut bc i'm shit at explaining things, so i ended up writing a lot hhh

i also wanna point out that these are just things that i've personally made note of over the years from my own experiences + being friends w/ other writers, but that doesn't mean they will apply to everyone!! more than anything, i always believe that you shouldn't let other ppl dictate how you do and enjoy things, so if smth works for you and you like it, there's nothing wrong w/ that even if it contradicts an opinion you got from some rando on the internet (a.k.a. me😔💔)

Know your game

I'd like to say that in writing, there's a vein of liberty that isn't echoed in very many other creative fields; a lot of the times you can go in blind, and still make something of it because the nature of fiction is liquid — if you can imagine it, it can work. So to say, I find that nine times out of ten, room for improvement doesn't necessarily lie in the content of someone's writing, and more so its execution.

You could play a desultory game of chess without knowing all the rules, but if you wanted it to be your best match, you'd have to be aware of every move you could make, no? What you do from there then becomes a matter of choice, and choice is a landmark divider between doing something and being good at doing something. There's a difference in omissions due to lacking the technical knowledge, and omissions made because you are aware they are optimal.

Knowledge on the fundamentals of literature will always serve you, and that isn't to say you have to study all forms and contexts, but if you want to write a story, for example, it will always help to know the common elements of one. Grammar, punctuation, structure — brushing up on those things will build your toolkit, and once you've got that, you have the self-autonomy to decide what to use from it. My three favourite writers only use commas and full stops, and their works are, on all levels, spectacular. Still, if you asked them how to use a semi-colon, they'd be able to tell you.

Appreciating the basics will also tie into your creative exploration as a writer, which is a cornerstone in developing your distinctive writing style. I doubt a person in any type of craft hasn't heard a variation of know the rules before you break them, so studying until you do, inside out, remains beneficial to both new and old writers alike.

2. Have a starting point

This tip is fairly applicable to a range of different types of writing, and how one would practice it depends strongly on individual preference and styles of working. Some people like to plan things out thoroughly whilst others, including myself, like to dive in headfirst, and there's nothing wrong with either approach. The commonality between both types of writer is that regardless, they will have at least a vague idea of where to start from — a scene that they've bullet-pointed prior, a lyric that resonated with them, a mental image, an emotion or even just a single word that everything branches from. What all these details achieve is writing that has motion, because you have something of substance to piggyback you to an end point (the establishment of which is also important, but I will not be covering in this post).

3. Decide a structure

Again, this can be done both comprehensively or as simply as just having the thought to adhere to a certain method. As you gain more experience as a writer, you'll begin to understand what works best for you and create a system of your own, but starting out, there are a number of templates that have already been established by writers that you can follow, and find by researching. What matters most is that by using one — whichever it may be — you're turning your text into a story.

As an example, I'll detail two that I use regularly, in their simplest forms for the sake of brevity:

A linear narrative moves from point A to point B, and from point B to point C, etc. and all subsequent points build on the previous ones until your goal is reached. It's a system that works well for shorter pieces because it has a definite structure, like a length of spine and its individual vertebrae (and although we're talking about writing here, I think Newton's Third Law of Motion sums it up very well: every action has a reaction.)

A coalescing narrative considers all points as separate elements that may or may not always interact, but all contribute to the end point to different extremes. It's a useful template for creating depth in a piece, but due to its complexity, is better applied to longer projects.

4. Iterate

If you think of your first draft as a block of clay, everything you do to it will equate to it being moulded and shaped, and if you think of your first draft as a skeleton, everything you do to it will equate to flesh being put on the bones. If you want your piece to be the best it can be, there's a sort of detachment you must have from it, where you won't have the fear of changing it until it is in the image of what you have intended. Write and rewrite, add things, take them away, make a separate copy for every edit if that makes it easier for you, but keep working it until you are happy.

Iteration doesn't just apply to drafts — chapters, paragraphs, sentences and even singular words can be given the same treatment. When you pick up the habit, the process becomes second-nature and you'll find that the first lines you put down are the ones that make it into the final piece, and that is in light of sorting through the renditions unconsciously. Additionally, you don't have to do things in one sitting; sometimes taking a break and coming back to your writing with a fresh outlook is valuable.

5. Analyse and apply

One piece of advice I always see given when someone asks how to improve their writing is to read more, and though it is — at its core — a tip worth acknowledging, it always comes across as unserviceable to me. There is nothing that reading will change for you if you are not actively practicing the things you learn, or even actively learning to begin with. So to address it as a matter of semantics, I feel it's best put as studying the writing of others, as opposed to reading.

If you have a favourite author, go over their works twice — once as a reader to identify what you like about them, and then again as a writer to identify why you like those things. To put it into context, if I read something and decided that I enjoyed how clear and easy to understand it was, I'd do a second pass to figure out the attributing qualities. Perhaps it's the use of punctuation, chosen sentence forms or even the simplicity of words used. My first tip of knowing different literary fundamentals is complementary here, because it makes the analysis and application of isolated features that much more smooth, and also means you'd be able to adapt them into your own style instead of just copying the other writer, which is what you want to avoid.

7 Act Structure

The structure gives me a way to plot the story, insert the characters, and build a compelling narrative that moves toward a set arc. This allows each character to find motive to move forward.

I renamed them or gave them a short list of alternate names for each act to allow for my own interpretation.

The Realization (Act7) for example, in my mind is the Resolution, Acceptance, or Rejection and the perfect place for a good ending, tragic outcome, or cliff hanger.

One of the biggest roadblocks I found as a writer is the Internet (I know, I know!) and my solution for this was writing the old school way (pen and paper, baby!).

In the back of my notebook, I’ve written down possible names I would use in future stories. No need to generate names, no need to get distracted.

There’s a list for first names, and a list of last names, so there’s no need to sorry about looking it up.

personal advice from my heart to yours:

sweetness, i want you to know that the first few months at a new private school can feel like you're learning a new language - everyone seems to know the words and customs except you. i remember feeling so out of place during my first semester, constantly second-guessing myself and wondering if i was "doing it right." that feeling of being an outsider would hit me hardest during school traditions or inside jokes that everyone else seemed to understand instinctively. i spent countless nights journaling about feeling like i was watching my school life through a window, wondering when i would finally feel like i belonged. but here's what i learned: that feeling of being an outsider is actually your superpower. you have fresh eyes to see things differently, and that perspective is valuable. you notice things that others have become blind to, and you bring new energy to old traditions. your unique viewpoint can actually help breathe new life into established social circles and activities.

its That time of year once more... had to throw in a few unfinished things as i havent been drawing as much (looking at you bg3 toolkit) but onto 2025 we go ✨

Dev Pile 2025-11 — Blood And Bones

Starting next week, I will be in a classroom with a bunch of students talking about ideation and experimentation. That’s going to involve some generative tools and showing them ways that they can use those tools to launch off ideas. My plan is to take them the skeleton of Moonshiners and show them the way that these tools can be used to generate the templates of card faces. Then, when I have those concept assets generated, I can show them the steps I go through to take those ideas and make them into my own.

The aim here is to demonstrate the use of these tools as a kind of word calculator. I use Excel to do math for me, and I use it to generate random things. I use texture libraries and public domain art, I know that there is a value to having convenient things to prime the pump, to set up a template.

Anyway, because I have Moonshiners in a skeletal form, and I want to use that class exercise to demonstrate the process on that skeleton, what I’m going to do this week is talk a bit about progress on Bloodwork.

LaunchTableTop is my current toolkit for game making. This means that I have a good framework for volume of cards I can jam in a box, and, indeed, the box itself. I can look at the example of Cafe Romantica, our game they’ve printed, and use that as my framework for how many pieces I want to go into a box. That’s about 120 cards, and some tokens.

Bloodwork is meant to be an asymmetrical game with symmetrical pieces. That is, the players are both playing clans of vampires, and Old Vampires and Young Vampires treat their resources very differently. The Old Vampires have institutional power and can carry resources from turn to turn, with a slowly growing base of power. They’re supposed to win end games, but also take some time ‘waking up,’ while Young Vampires have to recruit and construct themselves out of what’s available. There’s a common area, called the Street, which has resources in it that players can access, but will react differently based on what gang they are.

Stuff in Bloodwork is meant to be therefore, just a set of player mats, showing the nature of your gang and how to play them, fundamentally:

There’s a vampire that’s a multi-level marketing scam, arranging its cards in a pyramid. The start of the game, this player takes 24 cards, and deals them out face-down in front of them. Each turn, they take one of these cards and flip it face up, then takes an action based on what’s visible in that tier for that clan. Originally, this was going to rely on dice rolls to trigger cascades in the organisation. They still care about what’s in the street, though, because while they can’t recruit, any thralls in the pyramid can be swapped with Vampires in the Street, and, they can exploit figures in the Street to get bonus actions.

There’s a vampire that’s running a cryptocurrency scam. They have a resource that drags Thralls out of the Street automatically, and they follow one of four different fake currencies they have going on. At the beginning of their turn, their weakest cryptocurrency (with the fewest thralls) collapses, losing all its thralls and that’s the amount of resources they get to work with that turn. They have to spend resources to establish a new cryptocurrency to call Thralls back, and at the end of their turn, these thralls are dealt out at random between their currencies.

Then there’s the vampire that’s running a police force. Their organisation is a single line. Every turn, they pick a card in their line to ‘retire’ and it fires off everything on one side or the other, then slides the rest in place. This means that they have their existing power structure, and it does change and have good or bad days, but it’s just a matter of rearranging who’s in charge.

The idea I’m currently brewing here is the idea that any given game of Bloodwork has to feature an Old vampire and a New Vampire building out of a shared common deck, where the Old Vampire has the victory condition in their deck somehow, and it’s the job of the Young Vampire gang to find it out. That means the Young Vampire can be aggressive and have limited ways to handle being attacked, while the Old Vampire can be defensive and have limited ways to handle doing damage. In a lot of ways I’m borrowing from the concept space of Netrunner with this idea.

In the original form of the game, it was based on Liar’s Dice; players would roll a dice and then tell the truth or lie about what in their tableau fired. But you could lie, and another player could call you out, and if they did call you out, it meant you’d given up paying attention to one of a small pool of victory-point jackpots known as the ancient tombs.

In this new idea, the game becomes straight up head to head, but where Netrunner was a game of asymmetrical pieces with a pre-emptive deckbuild, the Old Vampires get a cache of cards to start with, and they view the street as a place to play, a way to deploy threats. They can rile up vampires on the street, making Young Vampires have to deal with them, or fight them, before they can recruit them. They can deprive the Young Vampires of access to Thralls, and choke off their resources.

That means the game is going to feature these Young/Old playmats, then along with that a collection of 120+ish cards. Of those cards, the majority will be Thralls, Vampires, Resources and Events, and then there will be the return to those Ancient Tombs that the Old Vampires are protecting as a base of their power, for consolidation and control. They’ll have the same back as other cards – and depending on what the Old Vampire is doing, those cards will rest in some space or other that other Vampires can try and attack.

(A classic, GIMP is an old friend of mine. The first software I downloaded for art, I used to use it almost entirely to create animated GIFs for the Warrior Cat forums. Ah, how time has passed. Nowadays I can't even remember how to animate a GIF on there, but such is life. I still use it to this day for digital art, even having Corel Painter. Before GIMP, I animated the old fashioned way -- MS paint and Windows Movie Maker. With determination, I scripted and animated a handful of Warrior Cat characters frame by frame. Each frame of Hollyleaf or whoever it was blinking was the likely source of death for our old computer, may she rest in peace.)

Storyboarder

(Storyboarder is a free software with which you can use to create professional and clean storyboards. It also provides printable storyboard templates so you can do you work traditionally and re-upload it easily into the software! It also works with Wacom tablets. Check it out! It's actually super cool.)

Pencil 2D

(A free, open source software. Simplistic design, switch between raster and vector, and best of all, again, it's free. I haven't used this one much yet, but I've seen it positively talked about by many! I'll update with more research when I have the chance.)

Krita

(I haven't used this one yet, so I can't speak on it either! But it's going on the list so I can come back and research it later. My poor laptop is not going to handle this many downloads lol.)

(I also haven't tried this, but see above, haha.)

Blender - Grease Pencil

(Blender is well known for 3D animation, but they added a 2D feature called Grease Pencil as well.)

(Free for up to 3 projects, very simple, but upgrades to a $10 a month plan, which is... eh, I'll keep my Scrivener for now. I used to write scripts in Microsoft Word or the Notepad on PC back in the day, I don't think I personally need the fancy features.)

I think it really depends on two factors: what works for you / what suits each type of content. For ref I do humanities/social sciences and have no experience with economic courses (other than economic history) or anything stem

For me the fundamental thing is to go to class and take notes. It forces me to pay attention. Even if you'll be handed notes (never happened to me in my uni) take your own notes.

With time you'll learn to be efficient and only write down what works for you. I personally prefer to make extensive notes that include more than I need (the logic I follow is making notes that I could use and get an A with if I hit my head and got amnesia and forgot everything I know but this is obviously the extreme and so unnecessary 🤭). But even if you follow a very extensive model, be strategic. Some classes only require bullet points.

I use the same template every time and use different techniques, but all my uni notes look the same since 2018 (😅 feeling old now)

If the course is hard I do the reading previously and take very detailed notes: parts that are relevant, following the structure of the text rather than very schematic and I don't really add my own reflections in the notes other than on footnotes (not the most efficient for most but works for me ). For me this guarantees that I can participate in the class and be active and also that I have good materials to study.

For me, note taking does 70% of the work and then I only need to highlight and read with attention and take notes (I use my iPad) by hand clarifying anything necessary.

If I feel insecure about how much I know I try to take notes of the weakest parts by hand (schematic, do not copy all your notes by hand except for maybe something you really really need) trying to fit the most information in one page (like summarising all my notes from the course in a very crammed and chaotic sheet).

Then read out loud, try to explain it to yourself. Use reasoning and if you don't understand something try to put it in simpler words, then increase complexity.

Think about what the test will require and prepare accordingly. My tests have rarely been very memory based (more like requiring you to explain big concepts such as "does the state predate the nation or vice-versa"/"traveling in the middle ages"/"the use of primordialism as a myth of nationhood in central Eurasia"/etc with no ready-made answer but rather requiring an understanding of broader literature. I never did mock tests but I thought about possible challenges I'd finding.

Last: write a list of key words you want to use 100% in your tests/essays. Things, events, methodologies, authors, technical terms that maybe have less concise synonyms so that they are in your "mental lexicon/toolkit" so that you explain yourself using complex and discipline-specific terms. This will make you sound more confident and will become a great tool for the future.

Connected to this: there will be some pieces of information that should become part of your "toolkit". Don't get used to forgetting things right after the exam. Of course, some details will fade but the "core" will become the foundation that will make your future study sessions/writing/tests/talking in an academic or personal context solid.
