im in a stranger things character music mood so here are some artists each character for sure likes
will: super obvious but the clash, the cure, david bowie, billy idol, the police, talking heads, etc. (i feel like this is a very basic answer but its the truth)
mike: he is so 90s so weezer, oasis, radiohead, etc (i already made a post abt this)
dustin: hall&oats, tears for fears, wham!, KISS, TOTO, a-ha, michael jackson, duran duran, baltimora
lucas: idky the first thing i thought of was bananarama but he would so love bananarama. beegees, michael jackson, earth wind & fire, jackson 5, stevie wonder, george michael, prince, idk
el: i dont think she really has time to listen to music but she would like popular 80s pop. like cyndi lauper, madonna, wham!, electric light orchestra, kim wilde, stacey q, the gogos, tiffany, soft cell, reo speedwagon, abba, bonnie tyler
max: kate bush obviously, blondie, duran duran, bon jovi, pixies, soft cell, tears for fears, rick springfield, no doubt, billy idol, pat benatar, tiffany, joan jett, etc
max and el are similar but el's is more 'listening to music for the first ever time' vibes while max is more lived in
jonathan: talking heads, the ramones, the clash, bowie, duran duran but only girls on film, the cramps, depeche mode, R.E.M., phil collins, the kinks, the animals, billy idol, the cure, the cars, blue oyster cult, jimi hendrix, styx, pixies, pink floyd, cheap trick, genesis, ozzy osbourne, foreigner, etc. i could go on and on. i think there would be a little more 60s and 70s in here too.
nancy: madonna, heart, reo speedwagon, billy joel, roxy music, cyndi lauper, joan jett, pat benatar, hall & oats, blondie, kim wilde, whitney houston, kate bush, tiffany, wham!, soft cell, bananarama, bonnie tyler, stacey q, lita ford, the bangles, cher, pet shop boys, john mellencamp, paula abdul, u2, olivia newton john, etc
steve: bon jovi, survivor, journey, boston, yes, DEVO, dead or alive, eddie money, kansas, foreigner, scorpions, warrant, etc. basically just basic (but good) bands that make him feel like a badass LMAO
robin: idk, just a slightly dorkier version of nancys playlist if that makes sense. i can envision it in my head i just cant execute it
joyce: heart, fleetwood mac, the mamas & the papas, journey, foreigner, boston, tom petty, toto, guns n roses, janis joplin, the rolling stones, jimi hendrix, blue oyster cult, ELO, led zeppelin, grateful dead, pink floyd, jefferson airplane
hopper: bad company, joe cocker, bob seger, eagles, the cars, jefferson starship, bob dylan, journey, styx, johnny cash, bruce springsteen
i could probably add so many more artists but it would probably go off the rails so i just gave u the basic ones
also i was looking at character playlists on spotify and most of them sucked (steve harrington is not listening to mitski) so heres some inspo for actual music they would listen to if you want to make a more accurate playlist

I just wanted to let you know that not only I adore you for an amazing works that you are writing but also for sharing with people your uptake of culture and your immaculate taste when it comes to arts, movies of course and music. Or maybe it’s just me being fascinated be the another soul listening to new wave and goth in what I was up brought.
Anyway Im curious What do you think, which Of The marauders would listen to cocteau twins, Siousie and the banshees, pixies? What are your headcanons on marauders taste in music and movies from late 70’ and 80’ the exact times that you set for opev and tsf
this might be the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me. thank you so much! i just love art in so many of its forms the subcultures it creates. i just find it all so fascinating.
might be a tangent, but idk if i actually consider myself goth. i consider myself punk because my values align with punk and i go to punk concerts so i’m in the culture, but idk about goth. i love goth music, but i feel aesthetics are a bigger part of it and i simply don’t dress goth :/
i definitely think regulus would be the big goth/post-punk/new wave guy of the marauders group, especially in opev.
in opev in 1979, regulus was early to the new wave genre. he really liked the talking heads and joy division, and also listened to siouxsie and the banshees, public image lmt, and iggy pop.
in tsf in 1986, regulus has fully thrown himself into goth and new wave and post-punk. he now listens to the cure (as in their early stuff), the smiths, the damned (once they started gravitating towards a gothier sound), depeche mode, bauhaus, and still siouxsie and the banshees and joy division. he’s a Goth Boy.
i imagine ‘79 james and sirius to have similar tastes in music. the damned, bowie, the ramones, the clash, new york dolls, buzzcocks, iggy pop, television, patti smith etc etc. i do though feel like they’d also like rock music (controversial for people who like punk) such as queen or pink floyd.
in the 80s for james and sirius, i feel they’d still like that 70s punk and rock music, but be leaning more towards alternative/dance rock psychedelic furs, new order, (later) the cure, blondie, billy idol

How do you feel about people self diagnosing mental illnesses? I’m in a debate with my friends about it bc I don’t think people should claim to have a mental illness such as; PTSD, OCD, bipolar disorders, depression, anxiety, etc... without knowing what it actually means. I’ve been diagnosed with all of those by a doctor btw so nobody call me out for not knowing abt mental illnesses.
I think it’s a personal thing. In my opinion, I knew deep down there was more to me than just anxiety and depression. Normal depressed people dont try to kill themselves over a video game. (i got kicked out of my guild back in like 2014/2015??? and i self-destructed). I’ve self-diagnosed most of my issues because some of them are rare autoimmune diseases - like hidradenitis suppurativa. My depression and anxiety I self dx’d. I self dx’d my bpd. Everything did get confirmed as time went on and when I could deal with an issue. I had to have a cyst lanced at one point and the surgeon looked at me in shock because I knew what HS was. My GP refused to talk to me about bpd, so i had to take it into my own hands and see a psychologist for the first time. I love stigma. /s
I was “diagnosed” with bipolar after no antidepressants were helping me but my hypothyroidism was hiding a lot of my other symptoms because i would spend 20+ hours asleep every day. LOLOLOL. so that went out the window. as soon as I got my thyroid meds (a long shitshow honestly), it sorta let my cfs and bpd out because i was functioning more. So yeah I’ve been misdx’d which isnt surprising because not only is bpd common to have with bipolar but they can get confused with each other easily.
In my experience, most of the people i know/myself did/with a self dx did it after a lot of research and self-reflection.
The sheer reality for myself, and this is my personal experience; doctors aren’t always right. Doctors can have their own biases and stigma. I went to my GP at the time when I was 19 about CFS and he told me I had sleep apnea, well I don’t. I’m much heavier than I was then and I still don’t have sleep apnea. I’ve had doctors shrug me off. I’ve had doctors be SO RUDE to the point I’ve walked out of appointments. It’s at the point my psych has said me that my anxiety about doctors isn’t just anxiety, it’s a downright FEAR because of how I’ve been treated by them in my life.
People are so quick to just believe their docs and take whatever pills they get handed without even knowing what’s wrong, that at this point in my life, I do question my doctors because I’ve been fucked around so much. So yeah I support “ethical” self-dx, because for me, i’ve only ever done it when I needed help with it. I’ve never self’dx’d to be like “ohoho look at me im craazzzzy i love being borderline, i love being the manic pixie trope because boys looooove me” or whatever.
Are there people who self dx just to be in with a certain community? yes. Do I personally give a shit? No, because I don’t have the spoons to police other peoples illnesses. Are there times when you can tell someone is faking it? yeah, and I would call them out, but for the most part? Self dx means we can target things that can help - like mindfulness and dbt therapy for bpd. Sometimes people can’t get a formal dx. My boyfriend is autistic and adhd, his is a self dx because getting him a dx will cost us near $4000. Some people don’t have supportive families, hell I only got my depression and anxiety dx’s when I could go see the doctor on my own during the day without my mother hanging over my head. She knew I was depressed because she made the doctor test my hormones. Did they do anything about it? Nope. So i suffered till I could get meds on my own.
Self dx is a personal thing and sometimes theres more going on with a person than their tumblr can tell you.
Fakers will always give health communities a bad name, but it doesn’t mean the rest of us should suffer because of them and not get the self help or professional help we need. Self dx made me understand my body more and eventually led to getting help. Wanna know the ironic thing about HS? there’s no cure or pills for it. So it’s not like I can even get better from it. My skin is literally eating itself and barely any doctors have any idea of what it is because no one talks about it. Sometimes self dx is a coping mechanism to feel like everythings okay. I’d rather self dx than suffer from an unknown illness, because if anything is going to set my anxiety off, it will be that.
sorry, i feel like i have a strong opinion on this lol

A fantasy prompt for 'green' plz?
Certainly! What a delightful request!(Only now, going back up to add this little response, do I realize that you asked for ‘a prompt’, and not a million. Oops.)I hope you like these. They’re a bit wordy- I got carried away. But they’re prompts nonetheless! If you would like some shorter, more to-the-point prompts without as much context-content, or whatever you want to call the lengthy bits of writing, pray tell! Or, if you just want more/less of one kind of prompt (more dialogue, less setting, etc.), or if you just want more prompts in general, I’d be happy to write you up a dozen more.
________
- - -‘Blood of Tree’, they called it. A swirling mass in a jar that bowed and dipped and swayed to some silent waltz, luminescent with some brilliant, strange force. It gushed about in oozy rivulets one moment, and then kept aloft the next in a foggy murmur of a cloud, and then it would sit on the bottom of the glass in shattered fractals, jagged and wickedly sharp. I always thought the name was silly. It deserved its own name. It didn’t need to be compared to anything. Heck, it couldn’t be compared to anything.
- - -“They aren’t pixies,” the troll whispered. Fear fluttered over his eyes like some maddened moth. “Just keep your trap shut, and we’ll get out of this alive.” And it was then that I saw one of the shrieking creatures. Wee claws curling around the stone corner, a hissing warble, followed by another mind-stabbing scream. Verdant scales and the coiled muscles of an adder, lanced through with voidish black, the intensity matched only by their eyes. Oh, the eyes….
- - -The dull thrum that came from the marsh was deafening for some, but a lullaby to others. I used to tell my kids that it was the tupelo trees singing. That, if they listened closely enough, they could hear the crickets and the frogs harmonizing to try to brighten their sepulchral melody, but to no avail. They mourned for the slow world, the one full of moss and jewelish dragonflies and sweet dreams. The one that had been replaced with smoke and spilled business and the bustle of aching feet. I told them that they just didn’t understand the change. And I told them that that was okay. Because none of us did, really. We just didn’t talk about it quite as often nor quite as loudly as they did.
- - -The elf’s sigh was explanation enough. But he clarified anyways. “Here, they can’t get us.” I looked around at the mismatched tables and chairs. The threadbare rugs mixed with the plush carpets and the faux-fur bathmats that had been shoved under stools so they wouldn’t scratch up the floors. The walls, covered in paintings and claw scores and hand-drawn pictures and toddler scribbles and one or two scorch marks from when they still had stoves. And then I looked at the people. Despite the circumstances, they were smiling. Despite what was out there, they looked…. They looked happy. Even the kids weren’t crying, despite the bandages being wrapped around their wounds, despite the acrid smell of the old candles. These…. These people. They were far from home. And, heck, they were with other species that, on any other given day, they probably would’ve been trying to rip the heads off of. But no. It was calm. And it was…. It was good. “Here,” he continued, with a trace of a smile tugging at the corner of his mouth, “we can heal.”
- - - “The creature will be the death of me,” the Lady sighed, delicately placing her elbow unto the table so she could properly lean her chin upon it. “He’s a genie, m'Lady,” a servant reminded, her voice choked with giggles. “He can’t kill.”They both turned their heads to the gaudy spirit, festooned in a garb of eye-straining greens and polished emeralds and parrot-feathers, his cape whirling as he turned on his heel to accept yet another noble’s quail-eating challenge. (They both had to duck to avoid being clobbered with his stein of ale.)“I know. I just wish I could kill him.” She cocked an eyebrow as she watched the grease and ginger-sauce in his beard simply whuhff away the moment it drizzled down. “He knows perfectly well what I wished for. But he’s just finding one loophole after another. I have half a mind to dismiss him.”“You wouldn’t…! I mean…. With all due respect, m'Lady! The genie is… an animal, surely. Riddled with crudity and a vile tongue. But what he’s brought to the courts surely outweighs the burden, m'Lady?”
- - -“You’re telling me you’ve never heard of Dragon’s Grog?” The vampire grinned, leaning against the wall as plumes of smoke lazed upwards to meet the haze of the city air. The neon sign above us flicked colorful shadows over his face. “Man, that’s not right. It’s perfect for everything. A night on the town. Weddings. Funerals. Parties. Any day that ends in a Y.” Somewhere in the distance, a Quik-O-Rail buzzed on its tracks. A single vwooiiiiif, and it was gone. He flashed his fangs once more before he slipped his headphones from around his neck up and over his ears. It seemed as though I could hear the blare of his electric, upbeat jam before he even hit ‘play’.
- - -“I’ll always remember the story of when the sea switched places with the moorlands,” my grandmother hummed, wiping her knife on the edge of the tablecloth. “Back when the pheasants and the rabbits slipped through the heather like fingers through hair. The breeze would tussle the grasses, and the flowers would dance reels with the mighty winds.” As she said this, she flipped the fish over and began cleaning the other side. I winced at the stench. “But sometimes, it was still. Absolutely, perfectly still. No rippling, no swaying, no nothing. Just… solace. Butterflies playing their strange little games, and sunbeams embracing the Earth. Birdsong was the only thing that broke the silence.”I smiled, and looked out the window. A chuckle escaped. The fields were roiling again, moving up and down as they swelled with the force of the Earth-tide. Even within the safety of the house, I could hear rocks grinding and turf ripping and mending itself back together, mounds of soil cascading and ebbing away until they were replaced with the dusky emerald of the surface-moor. Rabbits and pheasants running on that? And silence? It was a surreal notion. Now she was probably going to say that fish, somehow, swam on the ocean. I laughed again.
- - - It was more of a slime, now. Probably. She didn’t dare turn on the light, for the fear that it would bear some semblance to the moon… What a silly thought. Was she going mad? It didn’t work like that, it didn’t-…. No. No, there was no risking anything. She dipped the glass stirring-rod in the sludge again. Fizzing. Popping. But no shattering. Good, good. She picked up the flask, and squinted hard- had she used too much silver? It was more metallic than anything. It was supposed to be green. Venom-green. That’s what… That’s what it was supposed to be. Darn it all, she didn’t have the time for this! How late was it? She couldn’t just remake the whole bloody thing! A cure was a cure. It wasn’t art. It wasn’t supposed to be pretty. It was just supposed to work. This was it. This was what she had been waiting for. The consequences of impurity be cursed! Oh, Lycaon almighty! THIS WAS IT! Slamming her fist on the cold table, she threw her head back, and began to drink.
- - - The butterfly was made of pale, thin pieces of interlocked jade. Stiff wings clinked against one another as it fluttered clumsily about the office. But then freaking Steven just had to see it. Without missing a beat, he grabbed his miniature stapler, and lobbed it over his cubicle’s wall, hitting his target dead-on. Upon impact, the insect shattered, and a fine, glittering dust arose, only to be sucked up by the ceiling vents. “You’re a jerk,” someone cried from halfway across the room.
- - -The dinghy lurched upwards again. We could hear the cringe-worthy scrapes of her spines on the bottom of our boat, each moment annunciated by a sharp whump as one ended and the other started. Unbroken scales began rising to one side, and then the other… a terrible, sickening shade of seafoam that reminded me a little bit too much of home. “It’s been too long.” My old voice took a chance to appear before I could catch it.“You heard our call. You heard it thrice. And only now, seven years adrift, do you come to our aid.” Whatever the meaning behind the distorted shrieks that issued from the spray there was, I did not listen. I was far too gone to have cared. “Leave. Your excuses harbor nothing.”
- - - “What part of ‘He’s sleeping’ don’t you understand?” The little dryad looked up at her with a tearful snort. “You can’t… For goodness’ sakes. You can’t wake up a non-magical tree. It’s nothing to cry about. He’s not dead, he’s not ignoring you. He’s just sleeping.” Apparently, the explanation didn’t do much in terms of making things better. The creature rubbed vigorously at her eyes with a downturned wrist before leaping forward to wrap her short arms (the best she could) around the slender trunk of the birch tree. The racking sobs came a moment later. The woman sighed. “For the love of…. Just stop, okay? You’re being ridiculous.”
- - -The air was close here. Stitches of silence had been sewn into his tongue, and he dared not disturb the resting realm. The pines, as vigilant as ever, kissed the clouds with their crowns- or, rather, the other way around. He could not see their end. He could, however, see the clouds. The height of their trunks seemed to rival the length of a giant’s sprint. (The only that kept him from believing that he had fallen to the stature of a dormouse was the trace amount of ferns that crouched about the heaps of root. And even then….) After another mile had passed, the man sat down, swept his cloak about his legs, and slumped against his satchel. The daylight had taken a rather unexpected leave. With a twitch of his lips, he felt agog as he turned his eyes above. The man’s breath came slow and swift all at once. This was what he came for. To see this. The slate clouds had gone, replaced by a great, coarse mass of charcoal brown. It fell and rose in time, before it began away, the Earth trembling as it made for the horizon. Ever-so-slowly, day returned, slipping around the belly of the beast like water over a bowl. Less than ten feet away, the bone-shaking step of an ebony hoof fell. (It had to be twice as large as any inn he’d ever seen.) Of all of his years, this marked only the second time that he had seen one of the elk of the Foraoise Mhór.

:0 klance for the ship ask thing?
please send me a ship and I will tell you
KLANCEEEE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
who’s the cuddler:  Keith, but in a very lowkey way. He doesn’t make his desire to be constantly cuddling with Lance obvious, he kind of just slowly inches himself closer to lance on whatever bed or couch they’re on till their legs are intertwined or till he’s lowkey the little spoon. Lance doesn’t mention it, he’s kind of used to all his little siblings curling up to him whenever they were tired & their parents were at work. If anything he just finds it endearing & sort of slowly strokes Keith’s hair as he relaxes more because he knows his younger siblings always found it comforting.
Keith’s love for cuddling doesn’t end with Lance though. Shiro was the first person he ever felt comfortable enough to be vulnerable around. But slowly over time Keith has grown close enough with each of the paladins that they are all well aware of his habit to just curl up like a cat next to the nearest one of them & k.o. after a particularly long or stressful mission. Hunk & Shiro are probably the only two he cuddles with anywhere close to as much as he cuddles with Lance.
who makes the bed: Neither, they’re both lazy as fuck teenage boys & could care less. Plus they’re always getting called out of bed at crazy fucking hours by Allura or Shiro to fight some gross galra bitches or something so yeah, neither. At the garrison, it was another story but only because they were forced to keep their rooms clean for daily inspections like at boot camp.
who wakes up first: Keith, but more so out of habit from the garrison, it’s not something he really ever stopped doing once he got kicked out. He’s okay with it though because he doesn’t sleep a lot as it is and he likes watching the sunrise. He used to like taking his hoverbike out on mornings he woke up particularly early and watch the sun set fire to the desert landscape as it creeped up over the mountains. He would think about Shiro, his Dad, and where his mom might be or if she was even alive, and just kind of quietly mull things over & wonder how his life got to where it was.
who has the weird taste in music: Hmmmmm….. depends on what we’re defining as weird, but personally, I’m gonna say neither. Lance listens to a lot of reggaeton, early 2000s r&b and of course the bops & bangers of today (you bet your ass he’s gonna be happy as fuck when he gets to earth and sees how popular despacito and mi gente got because he was always made fun of by white demons at school for listening to Spanish music).
Keith, however, is more of a 90s/early 2000s alt-rock/“emo”/indie music sorta guy, but like before emo was a thing. He listens to Radiohead, the killers, cage the elephant, green day, Tegan and Sara, smashing pumpkins (some 80s music like the Smiths, a-ha, the cure, talking heads, pixies, etc). While some of his fave more modern bands are the neighborhood, sir sly, bad suns, foster the people, and a little bit of pop-punk like the front bottoms, modern baseball, moose blood, FIDLAR, and tigers jaw. His playlist is like a moody aesthetic grunge playlist.
who is more protective: Lance, he can’t help it. It just comes naturally to him since he’s so fiercely protective over his siblings as it is. He always has Keith’s back in a battle (& vice versa of course) but he really goes that extra fucking mile. They are genuinely an unstoppable duo when they battle together, it impresses even Allura how well adapted they are to one another’s fighting style. They’re a lethal team. And you can also bet your ass that they are constantly sparing with one another (& with Shiro or Hunk for the extra challenge).
who sings in the shower: Lance! He’s not a morning person but once he’s up he’s up, and he enjoys doing his morning routine. It keeps him grounded & is a calming methodical way for him to start his day. When he sleeps over in Keith’s room (or Keith in his) Keith always hears him singing something in the shower. He normally sings in Spanish & it really got Keith feeling some typa way because it’s just so so soooooo pretty. Lance singing in his first language just feels…. right, natural. He sounds so comfortable and at ease with himself by the way the words just seem to roll off his tongue & it’s easily the most confident he’s ever heard Lance, he probably thinks Keith can’t even hear him. But honestly, he could sing Keith to sleep every night & you would hear no complaints from Keith.
who cries during movies: Both! But they are far too proud to admit it. Pidge will see a tear rolling down either of their faces & make the biggest deal out of it in the world, announcing it to all the other paladins by shouting “OH MY GOD LANCE ARE YOU SERIOUSLY CRYING RIGHT NOW?! AHAHAA”
At which point Shiro will chime in with something along the lines of…
“Now Pidge it’s perfectly reasonable to cry in this situation, in fact, it’s healthy for him to be expressing his emotions with us so openly-”
*cue lance screaming* “SHUT UP PIDGE, I am most definitely NOT crying” (he says as he rubs his eyes furiously)
*now cue shiro looking into the camera like he’s on the office completely abandoning whatever speech he was about to give while pidge & lance scream at each other in the background*
who spends the most while out shopping: Lance, but only because skin care products are so goddamn expensive. Even in space, it seems he can’t get a decent moisturizer for less than 1,000 gac.
who kisses more roughly: Keith, that boy loves him a good ass Lancey Lance make out session & you legit cannot convince me otherwise. While Lance most certainly surprises Keith with little pecks on the lips or cheek, Keith is always the one initiating their makeout sessions & holy smokes talk about intense. Keith can’t help it, he holds on to Lance like he’s afraid he’s gonna slip away if he doesn’t. He’s not used to having nice things and he doesn’t exactly know whatever this thing is between him and Lance but he does know he’s not willing to let it slip away like everything else seems to in his life. He kisses Lance like he’s the only breathe of air he’ll get all day. Smashing his lips against Lance’s, desperately gripping at his waist, pressing their bodies together like the fate of the universe is at stake and the only thing that’ll save it is them holding onto each other. He leaves Lance gasping for air, but for Keith, every moment he spends away from Lance is when he feels like he’s suffocating. Kissing Lance is what he imagines a clear head feels like, kissing Lance is what it feels like to be on solid ground after floating around aimlessly in the clouds your whole life. Kissing Lance is like coming home after a long vacation and feeling the peace you had forgotten being at home brings. For Keith, its the only home he’s ever known.
who is more dominate: Keith, he is a hot head at his very core & the idea of not being in control annoys him. But everything is a compromise in their relationship. They know when to pick their battles with each other & when it comes to piloting the lions, Lance is Keith’s right hand as always. He trusts Keith’s battle instincts & trusts him to lead Voltron. Now, however, that Keith is on mission with the blade, Lance finds himself questioning Shiro more and more. He finds himself thinking of ways out of their situation but unsure of himself and unable to voice his opinions. He wishes Keith were around… wishes for his unending encouragement of Lance. He knows what Keith would say if he was there… “don’t get so in your own head Lance, speak up. Say what you need to say. No one here is going to judge you, we trust you, we need you” he’d say that like it were the most obvious and truthful thing on earth or any other planet… and Lance would believe him.
my rating of the ship from 1-10: (first can I apologize that the last two lowkey turned into Keith & Lance like one-shot stories lmao, peep that black paladin Lance content I’m fucking dying for) UM 12/10 A QUALITY FUCKING SHIP WOW. Pretty much the only ship I’m literally dying to see become canon. I think they have a very interesting dynamic & are a very plausible ship. I don’t really even ship anyone else in Voltron that much (aside from Hunay but even then Hunk & Shay lack content so RIP ME).
THESE THINGS ARE SO MUCH FUN TO WRITE, SEND ME MORE SHIPS!

Another month, another Skincare Shake Up! I think skincare is one of my favourite things to talk about, I love discovering new products and get really excited knowing I can share them with you. There are some proper gems in this month’s post (hello, new affordable liquid exfoliator!) so let’s get going!
Before we get into this month’s Skincare Shake Up, I have a quick question for you. These posts are always ENORMOUS as I try a lot of products and love skincare so much that I get a bit carried away talking about it! So I’m wondering if it would be more helpful/manageable to have this information split into two posts: separating the morning and evening routine? Or maybe putting basic skincare in one post and then all additions (bodycare/face masks) etc in another post? Let me know in the comments, I’d be interested to hear your thoughts!
EVENING ROUTINE:
Superfacialist Vitamin C+ Skin Renew Cleansing Oil. You’re probably bored of hearing about this cleansing oil in so many Skincare Shake Up posts, but I just love it. And true love lasts a lifetime (super friend points to anyone else who hears Emma Thompson saying that in their head!)
After my success with DCL last month (you can read about that HERE), I was keen to try another product from them. The DCL C Scape Enzymatic Gel Cleanser* contains natural enzymes, sugar, and fruit acids to remove dead skin cells and brighten the complexion. It is a really thick gel and this put me off a little bit, as my skin hates anything too heavy. I don’t know if it was this that made my skin feel quite warm afterwards but I limited its use to 2-3 times a week just in case. It didn’t induce a flare up, it just made my skin a little bit warm, but as soon as that passed it felt very soft, pampered and clean without feeling stripped. Maybe one that’s best for those without sensitive skin!
Naturally Radiant Glycolic Tonic 5% Glycolic Acid* – I was so excited to try this as the beauty world has been flipping out over it. Dubbed as an affordable dupe for the Pixi Glow Tonic (a review on that coming next month so I can compare!) as it also contains a 5% concentration of AHA. It’s only £5.99 which is bananas considering the prices of most liquid exfoliants. If you have sensitive skin, chemical exfoliators are much better for us than physical scrubs but it’s just about finding the best one for you. This one is very gentle and I didn’t get any prickling, heat, or flare ups from using it. It’s also vegan friendly – bravo! I’ve been using it 3 nights a week and I love it! If you want to dip your toe in the chemical exfoliant water then this is a really affordable way to do it.
Dermalogica Ultracalming Mist* I think I’ve mentioned this mist in a previous Skincare Shake Up but I love it. Dermalogica’s Ultracalming range is very highly regarded among the rosacea community and this mist is one of my favourites from the range. I wouldn’t say that mists are a must-have but they are great at calming and soothing skin that feels tight, hot, or prickly – something very common with rosacea – so I love them.

Every time I use products from the Simply Pure range I am amazed by the quality considering how affordable they are. The Simply Pure Hydrating Night Serum* is only £3.99 but is wonderfully light, quick to sink in, and leaves my skin feeling soft and smooth with no stickiness.
I’m still using the Kalme Night Repair Cream* (you can read my review on it HERE) but as the weather has turned slightly colder I’ve needed some extra help, so I’ve been mixing in a few drops of The Body Shop Vitamin E Overnight Serum-in-oil*. The latter is a great option for you if you like the results of oil but not the oily (!) feel of them. The consistency of this is exactly as you would expect from the name: a thin, more watery version of an oil that sinks in like a serum and leaves the skin feeling absolutely dreamy. I’ve been using this as night, but due to the lighter formula I think this would work in a morning routine as well.
#gallery-0-6 { margin: auto; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-item { float: left; margin-top: 10px; text-align: center; width: 50%; } #gallery-0-6 img { border: 2px solid #cfcfcf; } #gallery-0-6 .gallery-caption { margin-left: 0; } /* see gallery_shortcode() in wp-includes/media.php */
I can’t remember how long I’ve been using the Nuxe Rêve De Miel lip balm but I cannot imagine I’ll ever give it up. It’s thick, slightly gritty, and matte which will put some of you off, but for me it’s the best. I wear a lot of drying matte lipsticks and this is what saves me. This pot is nearly done… luckily I have two back ups – I did tell you I loved it!
When it comes to masks/treatments I’ve been using the Cure Natural Aqua Gel once a week as an exfoliator and it is the most bizarre skincare product to ever feature in a Skincare Shake Up! You apply the gel on dry skin and as you start to massage it into skin, disgusting little balls of ‘dead skin’ start forming. There is some debate over whether this is a genius product that really works, or whether it’s all just a chemical reaction that forms the rolls… but my skin feels absolutely incredible afterwards: so smooth and soft. As an experiment I used it twice in a row, and there were definitely fewer ‘balls’ produced on the second use, which makes me think that maybe it is actually doing some form of light exfoliation. Fair warning, this product STINKS of alcohol and may be aggravating to those with really reactive skin, although personally I haven’t had any issues. Interestingly, I’ve heard that the Body Shop have a version in their Vitamin C range that does something very similar (THIS product) so maybe I’ll try that! Let me know if you’ve used it, I’m very intrigued…
I bought the Topicrem Ultra-Moisturising Body Milk in Paris and although it does ‘smell like old ladies’ (according to my tactful and brutally honest husband) I love it. It’s lightweight (which doesn’t irritate my keratosis pilaris/chicken skin), doesn’t make my stick to the bedding, and makes the skin on my body look like I take much better care of it than I actually do!
  MORNING ROUTINE:
When I wake up, I’ve either been using the DCL gel cleanser or the B. Pure Micellar Water* to give myself a quick once over. I’ve been waxing lyrical about micellar waters for years and this is a brilliant one if you are on a budget or don’t get on with my holy grail (Bioderma, FYI). It’s just as quick as make up wipes and so much better for your skin, this also works as a make up remover/first cleanse.
On days when I was wearing make up and leaving the house I used the Simply Pure Light Emulsion Moisturiser* with the Dr Sebagh Rose De Vie Serum* on top. They layer well and sink in quickly, meaning I can move on to my primer and make up without worrying that everything was going to slide off! This impressed me just as much as the night serum I mentioned earlier, but as this is a moisturiser it’s a little thicker. It’s still a great price and a really good simple product that does what it says it will. It does contain SPF 15 but you should obviously still be using an added SPF (I’ve included my current favourite below). I feel like the Dr Sebagh product should say ‘serum’ in bunny-rabbit-ears on the packaging, as it’s similar to the Body Shop product from earlier: an oil/serum hybrid. I was expecting a traditional serum and was a bit thrown by the pipette and oily consistency! It’s very pampering and delicate on my sensitive skin but I’m not sure it gives me enough benefits to warrant the price, but having said that I only use a few drops a day so this bottle would last AGES. I know I have some readers who love their effective but luxurious skincare and this would definitely fall into that category.
I wasn’t sure whether to include The Body Shop Vitamin C Skin Reviver in this Skincare Shake Up as I think it’s branded as a primer/skincare hybrid. Vitamin C can be a little bit tingly and sometimes my rosacea hates it, so I introduced this very carefully but thankfully had no issues. My skin felt a little bit prickly the first few times I used it but there was no flare up, redness, or heat. It’s a very silky almost greasy feeling gel, so if you’re not a fan of that silicone-y texture then you’d be best to avoid this. I think it did help my skin to look more radiant and glowy but I didn’t like the way it felt under make up so I think I might try some of the other products from the Body Shop Vitamin C range instead, to get that glow without the weird texture!
On days when I wasn’t leaving the house, I used the Simply Pure Hydrating Serum with the Bioderma Sensibio Forte Cream* on top. This has a thicker consistency and I liked to apply a little bit more than I needed to – almost like a face mask – so that I could continue to massage it into my skin as I had my morning coffee. I love the Bioderma Sensibio range and find it really helps my skin when I’m recovering from any flare ups.
For SPF, I’m still in love with the Bioderma Photoderm AR Tinted Cream SPF50+*. It’s so light, slightly tinted, and doesn’t make my skin feel clogged or suffocated. It’s appeared in previous Skincare Shake Up posts but I wanted to include it again. It’s love love love!
The final item in this Skincare Shake Up is the Dr Hauschka Almond St Johns Wort Soothing Body Oil*. I am the laziest person when it comes to caring for my body but I am trying to make a proper effort now that we’re getting into colder weather. I’m going to be honest, I hate the smell of this oil: it’s very herbal and strong, but the way it makes my skin look and feel is so worth it. Plus the smell doesn’t linger so I just suck it up for the first 30 minutes or so!
And we’re done! This Skincare Shake Up was a bit of a mixed bag: a little bit of luxury, some very affordable gems, some hits, some misses. What skincare treats have you discovered or relied on this month? Let me know in the comments below, I love to be enabled!

Woke Up Falling According to Woke Up Falling, the band received their name through almost divine forces. “It came from an emo village. A very emo wizard spent his entire existence crafting the name from an ancient emo tear, shed by the first punker to ever embrace and share his feelings with others. They say the tear was caught and bound within the pages of the punkers' first 'zine. He shed it as he wrote page after page of poetry, expressing the breakup with his girlfriend. He went on to pioneer the emo haircut, emo front-man stage poses and the world famous "arms crossed/act bored/wear girl’s pants" image now seen at every show you go to.” Even emo guys have a sense of humor. The current incarnation of Woke Up Falling started just two years ago. Drummer Josh Hill moved to Portland from Austin. Against his better judgment he took out an ad in the paper seeking a band. “[I] got an e-mail from Gordie [Muskett, Falling’s front man]; we mailed back and forth a couple of times. Neither one of us wanted to meet until we were pretty sure the other wasn't a complete idiot. We decided to meet at the bar down the street, "Zak looks like he's 15 and I look like his balding dad," Gordie said.” The chemistry was immediate, and after some jamming, Josh was in the band. Bassist Darin Chase joined in a somewhat dorkier fashion. “I was one day on the pdxbands.com classifieds looking around for no reason. I saw a posting with the headline "Robots." I opened it 'cause I love robots and the posting said "bass player please," so I responded. If it wasn't for the "Robots" thing, I would have never met these guys. The first time I met everyone, I think they tried scaring me away by playing "Fahrenheit '69," a pro-John Kerry porno.” However, the earlier joining of Zak Martin was based on a pure admiration for the band. “I had recently quit my first band and happened to be at the first WUF showman house party - they were a 3 piece. I loved them so much, that I honestly offered Gordie $5 to be in the band. He said no. So, I continued to bug the shit out of him, e-mail after e-mail, each one outlining detailed reasons I should be in the band. Realizing that I would never give up, they finally let me come over. I wowed them with some killer riffage and thus began my fantastic transition into being broke as hell, all the time.” The kind of music they would make is powerful rock that can’t just be grouped into the emo category. While comparisons to Sunny Day Real Estate and The Cure are accurate to some degree, the band doesn’t let the boundaries of a label hold them back. “As a band, we're constantly changing - our new record sounds nothing like the first, and the next will be completely different than either of them. We'll never group or put limits on our music. We play what we feel. I've yet to hear my musical influences used to describe us, but I think we all are more influenced by life than music at this point” guitarist Martin writes in an email exchange. According to Hill “we still haven't figured out how to describe what it is we do. The new album is more a feeling or set of feelings. It works best when taken as a whole. It's like a book or a movie. A document of a certain time/place/emotion that we were all going though in one way or another. Fuckin' emo sappy shit.” Usually Muskett brings the songs and the others work to mold the song into its best incarnation. They rehearse in an old boardroom in downtown Portland. “On our side: old carpet, a giant cardboard Ozzy head, Christmas lights and a Bruce Lee poster line the walls” Martin informs. The most important thing to the band is honesty. If someone doesn’t necessarily like the kind of music that they make, they can still appreciate Woke Up Falling’s sincerity and their integrity. This is not only what non fans can see in their music, but what has largely created their fan base. “We hit on something that people can identify with and make their own.” The kind of fans they have are ones “who don't give a fuck about trends, about hype, about bullshit” says Martin. “Our music is honest and our fans appreciate that.” According to the band, musicians who are overrated are the ones who are dishonest. “Soul-less music is scary. Dishonest music is scary.” And despite their sound, they have a wide array of music that they truly love. Pixies, Fugazi, Smashing Pumpkins, Slint. But they all agree that Guns N’ Roses’ Appetite For Destruction is the coolest album of all time. I’m not so sure if Muskett is being honest with his answers though. “Skid Row's first album. No joke. Sebastian Bach has one of the most powerful, honest and in-your-face voices I've ever heard. Anything by Loverboy too, no joke.” Honesty has come at a price. Some members of the band have to support themselves with day jobs, which are usually only temporary, devices used to earn money to play more music. With the increase in gas prices, more money is needed to tour for next time. As Martin said earlier, they would have to get used to being broke all the time. Music is their life. It’s not only what they make it’s what they feed off of. “Music influences me to make music” says Muskett. “Music brings people together and helps people through hard times. I take pride in living a life devoted to returning that favor.” But being an unsigned band does bare its frustration. They’ve gone through two engines and four transmissions of their “Bronze Gladiator,” the band’s tour bus that has survived the lifetime of the band, as well as eight tours of the U.S. “It feels like I don't have a choice. I've always loved it so much; I can't see myself doing anything outside of music. Making it, recording it, etc. It's a scary thing to dedicate yourself to. I wouldn't be happy without it in my life, even though it's also the biggest source of frustration” says Chase. “I dump my money into it, tours, records, gear... it's what I can't live without” says Martin. “I can live without cars and nice useless shit, even a roof over my head, but I can't live without music. A week of no practice and I feel like jumping off a bridge - and Portland has many bridges to choose from.” “Despite our endless battle with the nasty dreaded "music business" side of it, we'll keep doing this as long as we can. It's hard to watch the gas prices rise, it's hard to accept that money can hold us back. Business, money... that shit is NOT very punk-rock.” “Right now it feels like the world is against us” says Hill. “Hopefully we can keep doing this, but with some outside help (strong label/promotion/etc). I just want to be able to survive and keep making this music. The struggles and shitty tours can make the rewards that much more worth it.” Despite their belief in the redemptive power of music, they do have their differences. For writer Musket the most important part of the music is the lyrics. “It's really the only way I'm able to speak my mind in a way that makes sense to me. Talking, I tend to fumble with words or say things I don't really mean, in a process to find the right ones. By the time I get there, I've lost everyone. Writing lets me talk my way and in my own time. Plus, I really like to say bad words into a loud PA.” However, for Martin it’s the unspoken feeling music conveys that brings the power. “I'm not the best with words. But I can explain myself with the feeling created by music. For any band, both the lyrics AND the music have to be excellent. We write the music first and when the lyrics appear, the song always takes on a new life, writing is always exciting.” Everyone agrees that the live shows tend to be very different from the records. “Our records are prettier, our live show is scarier, but they both share intensity” says Martin. “The new album will raise your heartbeat; the live show will give you a heart-attack. I think that in order to truly understand WUF, one needs to experience both sides of the band. We are a live band that makes records. You can't understand one without the other.” Hill says the main differences come from their actual presence. “We rock out. I hate seeing bands that don't rock out. I don't mean jumping around like an idiot, but you can tell if a band is really enjoying it and in "the moment." The recording is more "produced" with some strings, piano and such.” The band’s three albums have been widely acclaimed, with “Dividing Blue From Blue,” their very first record, being voted one of KEXP radio’s top ninety albums of 2001. Their latest, a self titled record, released last year, keeps the momentum going. “Here’s Your Pretty” is a heartbreaking ballad while “Fake Your Death” is about as immediately and exciting as music gets: the first line sucks you right in. If there’s a definitive Woke Up Falling song, this would be it: it displays all their technical prowess as well as their ability to create an atmosphere, an emotion, that only music played with this kind of heartfelt passion can do. It basically showcases exactly what Martin and the band want their audience to take away with them. “I want people to walk away thinking, "Wow, they really meant it."
