I really really like that lucanis reaches the 'there must be some way through this' realization 'off camera', so to speak, while presumably looking at rook explaining the situation to spite. it just. hits right. he gets that moment to himself after 'this place is a nightmare, why would I want to stay here' to come back into focus, to gather himself and think it through in peace, outside of the demands of anyone’s gaze (including the player’s!), while rook takes care of spite’s confusion and urgency and distress as he can’t himself in this shattered state. they're inside his soul, but he still gets that moment of privacy, with rook and spite there and supporting but not intruding. idk there's just something so good and right-feeling about it. rook's presence in lucanis' mind at its most vulnerable and frozen could have felt SO invasive if the quest wasn't written as skillfully as it is, and I get skeeved out by that kind of thing incredibly easily so it's a testament to how well it's done that it always feels safe and supportive. lucanis has had both his bodily and psychological (slash spiritual/existential) integrity and autonomy violated so brutally and repeatedly, and having even the way the camera perceives him here grant him the dignity and respect and privacy of soul he hasn’t experienced in a long time… it’s a whole thing huh. No wonder it’s taken me a while to put it into words lol

(also what a contrast to what solas and rook have got going on, and what a sly way to slide the point of comparison in there to build to the thematic whole. the solas version of this IS of course wildly invasive and skeeves me out but in the intended delighted horror movie way. solas, too, was let into someone’s soul through the cracks in the wake of a traumatic event, and he IMMEDIATELY sought to turn it to his own benefit and use that trauma as a weapon against them fhdsja I’m sorry but it’s just such a character-revealing instinct for him to act on without hesitation and I love how terrible he is, it’s all so unforgivably premeditated and consistent.

rook acting out of the desire to make sure lucanis is ok vs. solas going ‘well. When life gives you oops killed my friend, make dead friend poisoned lemonade and make his loved ones drink it. this sunk cost fallacy isn’t going to perpetuate itself’ is such a neat contrast and it’s not in your face about it but it’s still there, deep and solid down in the thematic narrative. rook doesn’t do anything to or in lucanis’ mind, really — they negotiate their way through the layers of defense and are let through, and they help him make the whole thing more explicable, but they never exert any force or go rooting around for anything that doesn’t present itself to them first. solas goes about gathering ammo for when he's going to nothing personel kid this person from like the first moment fhdskh doesn't waste a second before he's on that gaslight gatekeep girlboss grind. the fact that the game goes out of its way to show there IS a respectful, non-selfish and kind version of this process makes what solas is doing even more deliciously awful (glee) and rook and lucanis’ relationship (platonic, romantic, whatever it might be in any given playthrough) all the more moving to me)

#dragon age #dragon age: the veilguard #dragon age: the veilguard spoilers #dragon age spoilers #lucanis dellamorte #solas #getting some affectionate solas slander in there is always correct as far as I'm concerned that's basically his form of prayers I think #one of the most non-alienating depictions of trauma and mental illness I've come across honestly. up there with harrow the ninth #(which is the all-timer of course. that book gets me when no one else gets me) and the hawk and a hacksaw speech in due south #for things that have resonated with me recently. you can tell how deeply lucanis feels like he's a completely shattered and destroyed thing #that can't come together and be a person again. and the narrative treats him with such affection and respect anyway #even on the worst route where he doesn't really get to resolve anything he IS still a full whole incredibly loveable (and hilarious) person #even though he can't see that from the inside at this point because there's so much pain and confusion in the way.#and there's no condemnation or blame there that he shuts down irrevoccably in many ways on the fallen treviso route -- only #a neutral not-unsympathetic recognition that this was one thing too many added to the burden. this was more than he could take.#and it's not a failing it's just a fact. he's surviving the only way he knows how even when it isn't immediately uplifting or cathartic #no there are things here that's beyond you to help him with and you have to sit with the discomfort and grief of that without #getting acess to his inner life the same semi-unguarded way again actually. it's so interesting. it's subtle and real.#he was a person with deeply entrenched patterns of psychological defense before he met you and you are not an exception to that #in an automatic way. you can't 'fix him' or his relationships you can only be there with him and when conditions are right that alone heals #(subtlety in some of these things I think a lot of the 'rook is only a therapist' criticism completely fails to engage with. btw.)#anyway. he means the world to me and I love this game I only wish there was more of it

the implications of mr compress drive me insane because i can easily read it as in some way or another, he probably felt he failed his bloodline, or that he couldn't shoulder that responsibility--- but instead, he chose to believe in someone who COULD, aka tomura. he saw revolution in a person and it was him. he could've tried to be the star of that show, but he instead raised up someone he saw great potential in, only showing the hand he was dealt when it was the end for him. i have seen a few things that imply he chose to work with tomura because of afo, but i don't think that's true, i think if anything someone of his lineage would be hesitant to do that--- afo and harima don't exactly have matching ideals, they may be radical to a degree but there's a difference between genocide and justice, and the league tomura creates has an entirely different energy to the way afo himself runs things. also if it's any level of literal that atsuhiro is inherently drawn to justice and what is right, then that implies he instinctually knew tomura had the potential to take on the legacy he felt he failed to uphold, enough so that he'd risk his life for him numerous times--- first costing him an arm, and then costing him his freedom.

judging by his words on people choosing their own fates, be they heroes or villains, as well as speaking of people's agency/personhood, it makes you wonder if he felt trapped in his own destiny too. he seems like he probably rebelled a bit when he was younger given his failed days as a magician, which doesn't feel all that prestigious for someone with his history. i can imagine he also sees himself in tomura, since they are both the heirs to some of the most prolific villains of all time--- if anyone understands the pressure he is under, it's atsuhiro. not to mention, mha has an obsession with using hands as a metaphor for things (particularly, oppression or freedom/affection), and though it's only in the anime, one of the few shots we get of kid atsuhiro is with his father's hands on his shoulders, guiding him to fulfill his legacy as harima's descendant, a thing he doesn't necessarily have a say in. it feels like it mirrors similar shots with afo and tomura, granted i'm not saying atsuhiro's father was some kind of tyrant, just that the insinuation of that pressure is there. while other villains were made by their circumstances or decisions, it was in atsuhiro's blood to rebel against the suffocating system they were born into.

him and tomura both having hand quirks also makes me think of another way they're similar. compression is a quirk that can be as dangerous as it is useful. we see that it can effortlessly maim others, which begs the question, what was it like learning that quirk? surely not easy or without consequence. that takes a lot of skill and precision. i think because of that, atsuhiro also makes for someone who probably wouldn't be afraid of or disgusted by tomura's quirk, which adds a further level of intimacy to them. he doesn't just see someone who destroys everything around him--- he sees new beginnings, and has the knowledge that from death, comes life itself. considering, despite his obvious skills in such, he isn't very keen on being a thief or violent for that matter, i feel like he's one of the few people to see and understand that tomura is not just the aggression and expectations that were made by afo--- he is his own person.

it also strikes me as suspicious that even though they needed as many allies as possible, he was never broken out of prison while other much more difficult people were pursued--- in the past he spoke out against the mistreatment of tomura and i feel like afo likely knew he was a risk to keep around, in the event he could not fully control tomura. so for as useful as he was, and could be, he was a liability, a part of tomura's humanity that couldn't be risked, especially when spinner was still around.

to close out, i don't think this was a last ditch effort, i think this is what he always knew to be his final act, he knew the curtain would fall with tomura, not him. tragically, he also probably knew none of them would realistically survive, but i think it was that fire that he saw in tomura--- a fire that could rival his great-great-grandfather--- that made him want to believe in him and drove him to do as much as he could. for all his theatrics and at times ridiculousness, his final act makes him feel like such a classically romantic character, someone willing to give everything up for the person he trusts and respects the most. i'll just never get over how utterly heart-wrenching it is to see atsuhiro's final panel be that wistful smile, still stuck in the same society that worships heroes.

We don't really talk about how on Jinx's artbook she's crossed out Vi, Sevika, and Ekko's eyes out like they're dead.

First we've got Vi. We can tell it's Vi because of the bangs and "Fat Hands" moniker right below. The ponytail threw me off at first, but now it's been confirmed that Vi will grow out her hair throughout s2 so it falls together.

Then we've got Sevika looking like an "ogre", as Jinx would call her. You can even make out Sevika's new bob cut, it's around the eyes, and darkened at the left side and top. (Why does Jinx always have to take a shot at Sevika? *sigh*)

Finally there's Ekko, which doesn't need justification thankfully. Ekko looks kind of angry (a little offended) in a funny way, the context is probably not not going to be funny at all.

I can't say for sure that all the crossed out eyes really means that Vi, Ekko, and Sevika will die, it's just that the only characters depicted from Jinx's perspective with eyes like that are either dead, inanimate, or both.

The crossed out eyes could mean that Jinx gets to a point with all these characters where instead of hearing them she's projected her own inner voice onto them, permanently coloring her perspective on their relationships. Or maybe they're just dead to her, metaphorically speaking. There's a lot of options.

So it's been a while since I first read the Tom Taylor & Bruno Redondo Nightwing run, and I think my opinions on "where exactly it failed" have finally settled down into discrete points? It's not, like, a bad run, to be clear, but it's also not all that good, either, and it's not-good in a way that's been fascinating me for a while now as I try to pick apart the exact things in how the comic is written that made me go from "this is fine, I'm just not invested" to "I am actively having a not-great time reading this".

Right off the bat, I don't like the way Taylor writes dialogue. I find it bland and characterless and emotionless -- there's no rhythm to the conversations, no sense of character voice, and it just feels like... okay, it's nowhere near as bad as Fanfic TherapyspeakTM but it's kind of the same base idea? where everyone explains themselves perfectly in perfectly clear crisp language and works everything out by talking in like. three paragraphs and all their emotions are explained perfectly without it ever actually seeming like the character is genuinely feeling something. This is entirely a matter of personal opinion, admittedly, but I do think it exacerbates Taylor's main issue, which is that

Taylor wants to write... I think I'd call them uplifting stories? He wants these big heartwarming emotional moments (think how right at the beginning of his run, he has Nightwing call for aid from Bludhaven's ship captains in a desperate move that no one thinks is gonna work but then all of them show up to save the day) with a lot of emotional impact and he wants Dick Grayson to have nice things and that's not a bad idea BUT

Taylor cannot effectively write or set up emotion

and he especially cannot do it when he's working at a comic book pace

and when he writes these heartwarming, feel-good moments, he has a tendency to ignore previous characterization in order to get the specific emotional resolution he wants (see: that moment of Dick calling Bruce "Dad" after Alfred's death, like yes it's sweet and heartwarming but also LMAO NO)

When he writes these moments that are supposed to have major emotional impact, they're very rarely given the kind of set-up that they actually need to have the impact he wants them to have - I keep coming back to the moment in Bludhaven harbor, because the most setup we get is, like, someone saying "Bludhaven is a terrible city where people don't help each other", and then the moment when all the ships come to help is treated as a huge dramatic heroic moment that's subverting our expectations of Bludhaven and showing that even in a terrible place, people are willing to come together to help... but we the readers have no reason to believe that they wouldn't. Not beyond that one line, and that's not actually enough.

He'll just have someone explain what the problem is, without actually showing it or grounding it in the world he's supposed to be building -- no ship captain in Bludhaven is ever shown to be selfish, or to ignore people who need help prior to Nightwing's big moment, Nightwing doesn't try and fail to do something similar earlier in the story -- someone just says "that'll never work" when Nightwing makes the call, and then wow! it does! how perfectly wonderful!

This pattern keeps repeating, of Taylor trying to introduce something that's meant to be a big emotional moment, but failing to adequately lead up to it so it just constantly, continually falls flat, and this same lack of setup for stuff like this also applies to characters, so moments that are meant to be major turning points for these characters just don't feel like anything at all.

(And the dialogue really doesn't help with this because everything is all so flat and straightforward and Perfectly Clearly Spoken and bland)

(Also a lot of his choices for these big emotional moments are genuinely kinda dumb or trite but that's not really a writing-skill issue, and there are several that could be really good! if they had actual emotional setup!)

anyways TL;DR I personally find Taylor's dialogue quite bland, emotionless, and characterless, which exacerbates this issue he has with trying to write big uplifting heroic moments but completely failing to adequately set them up emotionally so they fall incredibly flat.

i wish there was a cordelia and sully conversation in this DLC in place of . essentially every other conversation. but i do think sully would take a swing at her

#my hc is that sully really really really does not like cordelia and its all due to how cruel she is with sumia #which cordelia thinks is not only normal but actually doing sumia a favour. so theyre never going to see eye to eye on this #sumia voice. um. which would i choose? my wife or... the woman who only considers me her friend when its convenient for her...#who always criticises me and puts me down in front of others... hates all of my hobbies... resented me for my relationship with my ex.....#only keeps me around to compare herself to me and feel superior.............#sometimes the noble spirit of butchness to protect and uplift your gf backfires a little bit. well. its just one black eye cordelia. soz #ylisse blogging

i finished the 2.2 update in one sitting and it was so much longer than i was expecting it to be and i had to go to bed to properly absorb the insanity of it all and here is a concrete summary of my thoughts:
