How I Got My Agent, Take Two

I’m so ridiculously over the top happy to say I’ve signed with a literary agent to sell my magical bookbinder book.  This has been a long process that started in 2017, and I’m genuinely overjoyed.

It played out thus:

Write book one.

Write book two. Query the book.

Write book three. Query the book.

Write book four. Get into Pitch Wars with the book. (Yay!) Query the book.

Write book five. Get into Author Mentor Match with the book. (Yay!) Query the book.

Write book six.

Write book seven.

Write book eight.

Write book nine.

Get a Revise and Resubmit offer from an agent for book five. Do it.

Start querying book six.

Get an offer from the R&R (Yay!)

Write book ten.

Book five dies on submission.

Start writing book eleven.

My agent and I amicably part ways.

Start writing book twelve.

Finish querying book six.

Query book ten.

Start writing book thirteen.

Go back to book eleven.

Go to a live pitch event. Pitch book eleven to two agents. Neither likes it. One asks what else I’m working on, and when I do the one sentence pitch for book twelve, says, “I could sell that.”

Pivot to finishing that book.

Query book twelve, sending queries first to four agents who only want queries and who are actively requesting off those queries. Get a 75% request rate. Query is fire. Check.  Unfortunately, every agent rejects when they see the opening pages, which turn out not to be fire.

Revise opening

Resume querying book twelve.  In case you’ve lost count, while this is the twelfth book I’ve written, it’s ‘only’ the seventh I’ve queried.

Finish drafting book thirteen in NaNo. Revise. Send to CPs.

Have existential crisis on a Tuesday. Meltdown on Tumblr. Weep in my living room. All my books have failed.  I do not know how to write a better book.  Maybe I should give up. This turns out to be a very well-timed dark night of the soul within the narrative.

Get two full requests for book twelve on Wednesday.

Get an email telling me one of my short stories has been held for consideration on Thursday.

On Friday get an email that the woman who handles submissions for one of those agents from Wednesday loved the book but she doesn’t think it’s a great fit for the agent I queried.  Would I mind if she forwarded it in-house to a different agent?  In shocking news, I would not mind this. 

On Monday, get an email asking for a call.

On Wednesday, which is Valentine’s Day, have a call with the agent.  She’s lovely in every way, her thoughts on the book are so good, every editorial idea she floats is good. Like, really good.  She is super enthusiastic about repping the book and offers to do so.

There is an etiquette requirement at this point that I tell any agent who has the book that I have an offer on the table and give them two weeks to respond, so I go around nudging all the agents with a full (four people) and several agents who only have a query. Three more agents request fulls. The rejections start trickling in.  People are very sweet and complimentary, and I am deeply, deeply relieved that I never waver from how much I adore the original offering agent.

I sign with her on February 29.

 Dispute with Judith Song

In late May 2017, Judith Song, a soloist signed with Cult Creative and several other subsidiaries of Cosmic, applied to the Seoul Central District Court to investigate the validity of her contract with Cosmic. She felt her earnings were insufficient, given the revenue she generated for the corporation and its subsidiaries. News of this dispute caused Cosmic’s stock price to drop significantly. In addition, many JUDY fans protested the company, sending protest trucks demanding better treatment for the idol. As a result of the dispute, several of Judy's scheduled appearances were canceled.

The court ruled in favor of the soloist. In response, Cosmic held a press conference, claiming the suit was fraudulent, and filed a countersuit. However, the countersuit was dismissed, as the court found evidence supporting Judy’s claims.

In a statement released shortly after the lawsuit was concluded, Judy’s lawyers stated: "Despite the hostile back-and-forth between Ms. Song and Cosmic, we’ve reached an agreement. Things have been smoothed out, and there appear to be no hard feelings between the parties."

Taylor Swift spends a record-extending 70th week at No. 1 on the Billboard Artist 100 chart (dated July 1) thanks to nine albums on the latest Billboard 200 and three songs on the Billboard Hot 100.

On the Billboard 200, Swift’s 2022 LP Midnights ranks at No. 4 with 60,000 equivalent album units, according to Luminate, after spending six weeks at No. 1.

OSRS Stocks: Brine Sabre

The brine sabre is a weapon in Old-school Runescape that allows you to kill a certain slayer creature without the use of its usual slayer tool - in this case, instead of using a bag of salt to kill a rockslug, you can use the brine sabre to kill rockslugs outright and save time and money. The name, description and location of this item indicates that it's been left sitting in salty water for a long time - but instead of rusting, it's been imbibed with the properties of salt, and so you can kill slugs with it.

I'm gearing up to do a brine sabre grind. It has a 1/512 chance of dropping from an enemy called a Brine Rat, which sounds like a lot until you realise that this weapon only drops from brine rats, there's only one area in the entire game world where brine rats spawn and they're definitely not the strongest mob in the game (level 70). Because of its rarity, utility and awesome look, this weapon currently sits at a value of approx. 289,000 gold pieces on the Grand Exchange.

But what's the history of this item's value throughout its lifespan? This post is all about that, at least according to oldschool.runescape.wiki.

So, the brine sabre is currently coming down from a record peak of its value. Here's the chart for the past month vs the past six months:

So you can see that the brine sabre was at its peak in early-ish September, trading at a value of 310k~. Some time in July, it took a sharp dip to a value slightly north of 170k. The market has been a bit unstable; maybe there was a rash of availability, like someone grinding for brine sabre drops and mass-selling on the GE.

What I find interesting, though, is the lifetime sales of the brine sabre.

The lowest price that the brine sabre ever traded at was 50,000 gold pieces on Wednesday, 31 January 2018.

The highest it ever traded at - leading directly in from its low point - was 700,000 gold pieces on Wednesday, 21st November 2018.

The next highest peak of value was 314k~ on Saturday 9 September 2017:

And the spike in brine sabre's value this past September is the third highest price this item has ever been at, at approx. 310k~.

So why is this the case?

You might think that the brine sabre itself changed - and you'd be right. In July of 2016, the brine sabre gained its ability to kill rockslugs without the use of an extraneous salt item:

But that was in July of 2016. The value of the item reached an all-time high in September 2017, over a year after the change occured, and the price subsequently bottomed out in early 2018. It only reached its all-time peak value of 700k~ at the end of November 2018, almost an entire year after it had cratered to a value of 50,000 gold pieces.

I don't know why any of this happened. Maybe some players grinded brine sabres to the point of deflation, causing ownership to increase so dramatically that the value of the item plummeted. But maybe after the item had lost its value and the glut of brine sabres had dwindled, other players began searching for the sabre on the GE and created new demand, causing the price to surge.

But I'm doubtful of that because the price took eleven months between January and November to go from rock-bottom to all time peak.

A factor that may have played into this is an emote clue for the master clue scroll, requiring you to go deep into the wilderness with the sabre and a bunch of other expensive gear to fight a double agent in the lava dragon pen. That's way fuckin up in the wilderness, close to the very top of it, making you extremely susceptible to pkers as well as risking a violent, dragonfire-fueled death in the search of treasure.

I don't know when the clue was added, but the master clue scroll was added to the game on the 6th of July 2016. At any point past that date, the emote clue requiring the brine sabre could have been added to the game, causing players to look for one on the Grand Exchange.

And why has it peaked again now, six years after it initially broke 300k in 2017? I have no idea, but the value seems to be dropping right now.

What gets me is that the rockslug is a very low-effort and low-value slayer monster. The average value of a rockslug drop is like 112 coins, and the rockslug itself is level 29. To get a brine sabre, you either need to shell out a six-figure sum for it on the Grand Exchange or grind a particular mob that's level 70, over twice as strong as any given rockslug.

I think it's a combination of rarity, its necessity for the master clue scroll and because it looks fucking awesome.

DIY Cat Purse

Ciao lovelies! Today I'm going to share with you how to make a DIY Cat purse! (For basic sewing skills!)

For this purse you will need-

Felt in the colors you want (4 sheets for main body, and 1 sheet for accent colors)

Ribbon or lace

Findings (2 large jump rings, 2 small jump rings, and 2 hooks)

Hot glue 

Sewing supplies (thread, needle and scissors)

Velcro

So below, I will have pictures of the steps and explain them afterwards:

Step one- Blanket stitch two pieces of felt (8inchx12inch) together around 3 sides. Turn right side out.

Step two- Cut two pieces of felt same color as body color. (1inchx4inch). Fold in half through the large jump rings. Sew under the rings. 

 Step four- Sew the ring strips onto the sides of the pouch we made earlier.

Step five- Lay another 8 by 12 inch felt piece over the back as shown, with enough being folded over that it makes a flap on the front. Glue/sew down. (Don't sew the bag closed!)

Step six- Round the front flap (I put a white piece of felt under the front flap to show how I rounded it)

Step seven- cut out your face pieces and lay them out how you want them, then glue/sew everything down. 

Step eight- Cut four pieces for the ears that look like the top pic of this strip. They look like little houses! Sew/glue in couples. (2 pieces per ear.)

Step nine- Glue/sew other color triangles in the ears, then sew/glue the rectangle part to the back of the bag like shown.

Step ten- Glue/sew velcro onto the front flap and pouch so that it holds the bag closed.

Step eleven- Make the strap by taking ribbon/lace and sewing it onto the small jump rings. Attach the clasps to the small jump rings, and then onto the large ones.

And you're done!

On Saturday, June 15th, chef Jamal James Kent passed away unexpectedly.

Jamal was a generational talent. A veteran of some of the top fine dining institutions in New York City, where Jamal earned the respect of his peers for his formal skill in the kitchen. In the days following his death, it has quickly become clear that his greater distinction was that he was a uniquely supportive member of the restaurant community. He was dedicated to mentoring younger cooks and lifting their careers, and sharing resources with people, including those who are overlooked by others. We, his family and friends, are committed to building the legacy that he started.

This fund will support The James Kent Family Legacy Trust, a vehicle created exclusively for Jamal's family–his wife, Kelly, and children, Gavin and Avery–to ensure that they’re financially stable and well cared for.

A Greenwich Village native, Jamal Kent started his culinary career as a summer apprentice at Bouley when he was fifteen years old. After taking classes at Le Cordon Bleu in London and Paris then graduating from Johnson and Wales, Kent moved back to New York where he spent time in the kitchens of some of New York’s most storied restaurants including Babbo and Jean-Georges. In the spring of 2007, Kent joined the team at Eleven Madison Park as a line cook and was quickly promoted to sous chef. In 2010, Kent placed first in the Bocuse d’Or USA Competition; he then represented the United States at the international finals of the Bocuse D'Or in Lyon, France the following year where he placed 10th in the world. When he returned to New York, Kent was named chef de cuisine of Eleven Madison Park. Under his leadership, EMP received nearly every accolade bestowed on a restaurant including four stars from the New York Times, three Michelin stars, and a coveted spot on the list of the World's 50 Best Restaurants. Kent was promoted to Executive Chef of the NoMad in the fall of 2013, the same year that it received one Michelin Star.

In late 2017, Kent set out to open a pair of restaurants and a cocktail bar in the landmark Art Deco building at 70 Pine Street in Manhattan’s Financial District. Crown Shy–an ambitious neighborhood restaurant on the ground floor of the building–exceeded expectations, collecting a Michelin star within a year of opening and raves from the New York Times and The Infatuation. Kent and his team followed up their success with Saga on the building’s 63rd floor, and Overstory, one floor up. They were rewarded with two Michelin stars and the #17 spot on the list of the World’s 50 Best Bars, respectively. With the restaurants at 70 Pine as their calling card, Kent and his partners at SC Holdings set their sights on other New York landmarks.

In Fall 2024, Saga Hospitality Group will open a restaurant in the ground floor space at 360 Park Avenue South on the corner of 26th Street. Later in the year, SHG will become the first retail tenant at Refinery at Domino–the former Domino Sugar Factory on the Williamsburg waterfront.

Kent was an active supporter of a number of charities working to eradicate childhood hunger in New York City including No Kid Hungry and Rethink Food, for which he sat on the Chef’s Council. Kent twice co-chaired the annual Chef’s Benefit dinner for Cookies for Kids Cancer, a nationally-recognized organization that provides funding for pediatric cancer research. And he was a mentor for the Mentors BKB foundation, an organization devoted to inspiring culinary excellence in young professionals and preserving the traditions and quality of cuisine in America.

* The scariest UFO experience was in early March of 2017. I left my house and there was a light drizzle. When I was inside my house, I felt like I needed to grab my umbrella from my car because I might need it in the morning. My umbrella was in my car because I left it there. However my car was parked a few houses down at my grandmother’s home. This was where I parked my car because there was no room in the drive way at my parent’s house and the community rule states that cars will be towed if parked outside between midnight and 6:00AM. I do not know what made me feel like I needed to get my umbrella for the morning. I just went. I walked in the drizzle to my grandmother’s home. The drizzle was starting to sting my face as I opened my car door. I reached inside and took my umbrella out of the car and opened it. I closed the door and locked the car. Then all of a sudden, a downpour of rain came out of nowhere as I stood next to my car holding the umbrella. It made me feel as if I was in a motion picture and the heavy rain happened right on cue as I opened my umbrella. I was still next to my car when I saw a rainbow orb. The orb was not solid. It looked like a regular rainbow, but with a sphere. Then a yellow beam shot out of the sphere. It shot out as fast as lightning, but it was a full cylinder of yellow light. The yellow color reminded me as a Dixon Ticonderoga pencil. The sound of this beam seemed to be 10 times louder than thunder. I could feel the sound through my whole body. I felt the ground wobble just like the time I ate at a restaurant in Rancho Marriage and there was a small earthquake. I nervously walked back to my house grasping the handle of the umbrella. The orb floated to the center of the community. It had gotten closer to me. Just like before, it blasted its beam into the ground. It made that super loud thunder like noise. The beam must have been hot because it seemed to be able to create a thick fog around where it hit. I was in front of my parent’s driveway and I saw the rainbow orb in the middle of the road behind my car in my grandmother’s driveway. The orb launched the beam down to the ground, shook the ground, and a loud blast sound was heard. Imagine huge plumes of white smoke before a car catches fire, but it was vaporized water vapor from the heat of the beam. The mist flooded the air. Then it started to come down the road closer to me. This was the first time I had ever felt like I was in danger from a UFO. I ran into the house. I did not look back. My shoes and umbrella were soaked. I am still puzzled on what happed to me that day. The next day was clear and sunny, all day. What made me have the urge to go outside in the drizzle the day before? Did the UFO have something to do with my desire for the umbrella?

* On 5/6/17 I was driving home from 7-Eleven. I was in my car and I spy what some people call a UFO. This unidentified foreign object was a Mercedes Benz SLS AMG Roadster. It was black and its fold down roof was up. The convertible top was black. The SLS took a right turn and I followed in my car. We were heading west on the bridge over a river. I was admiring the SLS while driving upward on the bridge. This time I saw a real UFO in the sky. It was massive. It was circular with a flat top and flat bottom. Imagine an “Oreo” cookie with the diameter of three jumbo jet wing spans around 600 feet. The object was gold in color and had what looked like weld lines. The height was about 200 feet. I was now at the top of the bridge and the AMG super car I was to my left and the UFO was to my 10:00 position in the sky. I was headed down the bridge and in about 3 seconds the UFO faded into the sky as if its surroundings were being mirrored on the craft. I could still see the outline of the craft. I was at the bottom of the bridge and the trees are now blocking my view. I arrived home without incident. On 5/12/17 NASA claimed that they were testing a top secret aircraft. This raised a red flag because nobody tells about secret operation of any sort in the government. I was and still not sure if the two incidents were related, but I smell a conspiracy in development.

* In October of 2017, I was on a cruise ship. Everybody had to gather at our muster station outside. I was standing in a crowd of people they are all focused on the musterer for a safety briefing. The musterer was showing how to put on the life-vest in case of emergency. At this time a commercial jetliner flew near a cloud and a gold disk shaped object appeared just below the front landing gear area of the plane. I thought the UFO appeared because the plane got close to it. I thought there was going to be an accident with the plane and UFO because of how close they were together. I would say that the disk was about 10 –15 feet long in diameter and reminded me of the shape of a hamburger made out of gold. The musterer was talking about life rafts and I saw two more of the same craft. The UFOs were zipping and zooming, similar to how wild animals play with each other. They were flying all over the place. Another commercial jet took off and barley missed another UFO again in a different spot. It was as if the UFOs were playing chicken in the airways of the sky. The three UFOs then flew in formation and headed for some nearby clouds. The safety briefing was over and I left with the crowd. This happened in Fort Lauderdale Florida.

Harder in an interview: “We will bring our quality to the pitch”

Pernille Harder has been chasing goals for FC Bayern Women since this season . Ahead of the upcoming top game on Sunday against VfL Wolsburg, fcbayern.com  spoke to the 30-year-old Dane about her current rehab, her first months in Munich and the duel against her former club.

The interview with Pernille Harder

Hello, Pernille. After your injury, you are already on the road to recovery. How is your rehab going so far? Pernille Harder : “So far it’s working very well. I'm on the right path. Everything is going as planned at the moment and I'm feeling better every day. I notice how I'm making steady progress. I’m very satisfied and of course I’m looking forward to returning to the pitch soon.”

Before your injury, you had already scored three goals for FC Bayern Women in your first four competitive games. How comfortable do you already feel at FC Bayern?  “I really enjoyed my start here in Munich. The team welcomed me well and made things very easy for me right from the start. I was also able to internalize our style of play very quickly. It's a shame that I got injured so early in the season in Essen, but I'm looking forward. When I'm back, of course I want to pick up where I last left off ( laughs ).”

You've been at home in Munich for around three months now. Were you able to settle in well in your new home? “Yes, I really like it here in Munich, the city is great. I have already tried many restaurants and cafés and of course also explored the city. There are many great locations, especially in Maxvorstadt. I'm looking forward to the next few years in Munich. It’s very promising here.”

Let's take a look at the sporting side of things: The top game against the Wolves , who you played for from 2017 to 2020, awaits on Sunday. During your time there you played with Ewa Pajor and Alexandra Popp, among others. What makes VfL's attack line special? “We all know the qualities of Wolfsburg’s offensive. Ewa Pajor is incredibly fast and has a very good finish. Alexandra Popp's strengths are primarily in the box; her header is very dangerous. We have to take good care of them from the start.”

Wolfsburg won't have an easy time against your defense; you have the best defense in the league with only two goals conceded. What makes you so strong in the defense network? “I think we are very stable as a team. This is incredibly important for the entire season and we want to continue to work on it continuously. We have very good defensive players in our team and a clear structure. The whole team puts a lot of emphasis on defensive work, I think that’s why we’re so strong at the back.”

VfL and FCB Frauen are the dominant teams in German women's football, having won all of the last eleven championships between themselves. Are there similarities between the clubs? "Yes of course. The way you train in big clubs like Bayern, Wolfsburg or Chelsea is often very similar. All of the top teams are characterized by an exceptional mentality and attitude. You can feel that every day and it certainly sets the clubs apart.”

Wolfsburg surprisingly failed to qualify for the Champions League. In the league there was a draw against TSG Hoffenheim after four wins. How do you assess VfL's current form? “Wolfsburg is a very strong team. They are always there, especially in these top games. We have to be ready. But I also believe that we have a very strong team and will bring our quality to the pitch on Sunday. We are in good form and I firmly believe that we will leave the field as winners. But of course we know that we have to work hard for victory. It will be a close game, but at the end of the day we will get the win. I’m looking forward to watching the game in the stadium on Sunday.”
