QuillKiller's Easy Beginnings
I know that a lot of people enjoy the internalized homophobia narrative in relation to relationships involving DE's and purebloods, and I often enjoy it too, when done correctly. However, QuillKiller is one of the instances where I think, characterization wise, it simply doesn't work. Specifically, I'm thinking when the internalized homophobia narrative is pushed onto Bellatrix.
Why? Well, what do we know about Bellatrix? She is dangerous, clinically insane, murderous and undyingly loyal to whatever she applies herself to, and canonically that thing is the dark lord, yes, but what else? She is self assured. When she battles people she taunts them because she is sure she'll beat them, when she argues she does it sardonically and with the very distinct air of I'm right, you're wrong, fuck off and die before I crucio you. Everything she does is with a sense of superiority and self respect. She knows who she is, and she wouldn't brush that off (especially in her teenage years, because Bellatrix as a teenager was a spitfire and a rebel in one way or another) to replace it with being who she needs to be.
So, when she realizes she's gay she doesn't think, she knows. She isn't afraid of it, or angry at it, guilt doesn't eat her alive about it, she doesn't dread not being the perfect daughter about it, because she's Bellatrix fucking Black, when has she ever been the perfect daughter, and when has trying to ever been fun? But this, her queerness and being able to weaponize it to piss off her family? That's fun. Bellatrix takes everything about herself and sharpens it until it's the perfect thing to ruin people with, especially when she is filled with teenage rebellion and hate.
Enter stage left Rita Skeeter, the openly lesbian trans girl (because fuck Terf-k Rowling, Rita deserves to be queer and trans and she is beautiful because of it) who is in everybody's business and runs a gossip column for Hogwarts. I imagine it starts 3rd year. Bellatrix has discovered this powerful, sharp thing about herself, and there is someone just as self actualized as her. Rita knows who she is, knows how to prove that to people. She runs smear campaigns against people who are transphobic towards her, and occasionally gets in trouble for hexing students who say nasty things, and she is a bit dangerous because of her abilities and Bellatrix loves it. She loves how being close with Rita is this game, loves how she walks a narrow tight rope of being loves and being smeared, loves the adrenaline rush it gives her (because she is so adrenaline junky coded).
And that love for all that Rita Skeeter is turns into love for her in 5th year.
And Rita Skeeter is intrigued by Bellatrix. By her ideology, the way she thinks and acts and is quick witted. The way she defends her so easily, the way curses flow from her wand with ease that Rita can tell is actually years of training and practicing (she ignores the thoughts about who she has had to practice on). And maybe it starts out as a story, but it turns into something else. It turns into this weird feeling in her hears, and sneaking into Bella's dorm, and learning what she likes to eat for breakfast, and wearing each other's ties on purpose and smearing transphobes together, and feelings.
And it's quite easy for them to fall in love.

harry potter discourse guide
step 1: tell everyone jk rowling is a transphobe
step 2: if people ask you to elaborate, continue to step 3 but act like you're answering their question instead of avoiding it. if nobody cares, continue to step 3 but louder
step 3: pick a setting element at random from the movies or other associated media (do not use the books for this, important for the next step)
step 4: don't bother checking if the element is already portrayed as negative/controversial in the text or even present in the text. you can't risk exposing yourself to dangerous literature
step 5: is this element borrowed from the broader fantasy genre? if yes, who cares, this is your show
step 6: now that you have selected your problematic element, choose a real life social issue it bears an oblique resemblance to. the more you stretch, the better
step 7: claim this was written to intentionally support the oppression of your selected group. if anyone asks for any further information, return to step 2
step 8 (optional): suggest another ya fantasy magic school series as a replacement, as though ya fantasy magic school series are a fundamental part of the literary experience. bonus points if the series is explicitly influenced by harry potter
step 9: ignore anyone who tries to remind you that you were originally supposed to be talking about real life bigotry

Trans Rita Skeeter
What meaning can Trans have in the magical world? In a world where anyone can change their appearance with magic?
Well, for those who do not feel they belong to the body they were born with, magic is a blessing, yet that obvious change is not accepted by the most conservative wizards, those who care about the purity of blood, about carrying on the family name. A wizard who decides to live as a woman, not to produce an heir, nor carry on the family name is not looked upon favorably, on the contrary, he is disinherited, chased away, mocked, marginalized.
Until that person gets up and shows everyone who they really are, throws away the mask they have worn for years, rejects the male clothes they have been forced to wear and can finally be free to show themselves for who they really are. This is what happened to Rita Skeeter, a new name, that no one knows anything about, a surname that has no history, for a woman who is hungry for stories. As there are secrets to reveal, because her most delicate and precious secret has been torn away from her and violently exposed.

There's this underlying theme of motherhood being under-looked in Harry Potter - Voldemort underestimates Lily, Molly is seen as this frumpy housewife, etc... and JKR thinks she's blowing everyone out of the water by then making motherhood the single most important thing i the story!
Yet! Not a single working mother! In the entire series! "The struggles of motherhood" is JKR's favourite card to invalidate trans women's experiences, and yet she seems to have an (unsurprisingly) narrow mind when it comes to what motherhood can look like.
Here's an example that comes to mind: in the context of the second war, with Remus being a man persecuted by both the Ministry and Death Eaters for his condition and position in the Order, there was no reason for him to marry Tonks. I'm not talking about "building a family" or "being together", I'm talking about signing wedding papers.
Personally, I think JKR places a weird amount of value on traditional marriage, and upholds the ideal of a nuclear family above all things. She could not have Tonks giving birth a baby without being married to a man first.
YEP!
For the Tonks/Lupin issue you can’t even blame this fully on the fact it’s being written in a children’s book because JKR’s description of their relationship later on pottermore falls into the same traditional (and honestly puritanical) traps. And like you mentioned, this doesn’t even make sense for their story/relationship. (there’s an implication that they were only just friends until that confrontation in HBP and were never actually together or even hooking up. Most remadora shippers, like myself, tend to not like this version of events because it makes their whole marriage/relationship look a bit ridiculous. Tonks’ behavior in HBP comes off a lot different if they never had any romantic interactions at that point. It also seems odd that they would get married in less than a month of being together if they were strictly platonic up until that point)
And yes her view of motherhood is incredibly limiting and a bit revealing. In general it’s used as a tool which to measure her female characters by: The non maternal/improperly maternal women are clearly marked as villains (Rita Skeeter, Umbridge, Petunia, Bellatrix, Marge), the maternal ones are seen as demonstrating proper femininity and are therefore good (Lily, Molly, Tonks), women who were looked down upon previously get a redemption arc focusing around this (Narcissa) (Fleur can also fit into this category as she takes on a Molly like role in DH) and the women who don’t have kids but are still supposed to be seen positively look after kids to some capacity (McGonagall)
Her use of motherhood in the terf rhetoric she spreads is stemming from a similar idea. Gender essentialists tend to highlight female suffering as their primary justification for their exclusionary behavior, whether this suffering be biological or societal. Suffering and pain is used to define femininity itself. Suffering, female suffering, is noble, divine, inherent, and honorable. Motherhood, like you mentioned, is one of the biological sufferings they reference for their argument. The pain of giving birth and the sacrifice of your body and the rest of your life is noble, divine, inherent, and honorable.
In the books motherhood is suffering and motherhood is sacrifice. A woman who accepts this role of pain achieves righteousness. A woman who rejects it is selfish and wicked.

Rita Think Piece
You know it's gonna be long when I add an actual title. But, to the point of this; I think it is important to acknowledge people outside of their ships/partners. I recognize I only really talk about Rita in relation to Bellatrix and I intend to rectify that. So, who is Rita.
First I like to think she's the picture perfect trans person, yet still doesn't feel validated. She knew from an early age, transitioned as quickly and quietly as possible. All her papers are changed - the boy she was doesn't exist. She consumed him whole. And yet she can still see him. Feel him. And is convinced others can too. This is the foundation of who she is. She sees the boy, so others can too, which leads her to bury for their validation - validation she already has.
I think that's what leads her into being a gossip column writer. I think in the beginning she wanted to write about important things. Tangible things that mattered. But she just wasn't good at it - nobody understood what she was saying, or rather she was saying things no one wanted to understand. And I think she links validation to being good. She doesn't feel validated as a woman so she is failing gender, she doesn't feel validated in writing real news so she is failing her dream career. And that won't do. She will do this or do nothing. And what always gets clicks? Clickbait headlines and yellow journalism. So she makes some leaps, and her 'journalism' is more like creative writing, but the validation is there so it must be good, right?

Man, holy shit, this site is engaging in some weird revisionist history about JK Rowling and how people responded when they started realizing she was transphobic and just... not a great person in general.
This whole narrative that Rowling and Harry Potter were promptly sentenced to full and permanent banishment from fandom? It's not true. It's not what happened.
I know this because I was there.
First of all, there was in fact a period of time when Rowling's transphobia was getting obvious (I mean, more obvious than Rita Skeeter), but people just kinda... ignored it. It began when she liked a tweet that called trans women "men in dresses." Her PR people infamously tried to downplay it as a "middle-aged moment," but it wasn't long before she started liking tweets from other transphobes.
When news of her transphobia became widespread, "how do we deal with Harry Potter?" was always a controversial issue, with a wide variety of opinions. There were people basically telling you never to touch it again and for the love of God read a better book, and there were people being like "it's fine to keep engaging with it, just don't give her any money." These two opinions have always existed.
Also, there have always been a number of so-called "allies" who ditched all of their principles the moment a new product came out. A lot of people jumped to buy Hogwarts Legacy the moment it came out, just like a lot of people are planning to watch the new HBO series.
And? If you dig around you will find that people have been criticizing Rowling's racism for years, and practically nobody gave a rat's ass. I unfortunately was not aware of most of this criticism back when it was happening early on, because nobody gave a rat's ass. I do, however, remember reading one article where somebody gave the most tortured apologia for Cho Chang's name. (I was too young and naive at the time to realize just how bullshit this was.) People were really willing to give Rowling a lot of grace back in the day, when they really shouldn't have.
And yeah - if you're one of those people who thinks Rowling is right about trans people, I sure as hell think you're wrong, but I'm not going to try and argue with you here, because I know it won't work. I will say that you're the fucking scum of the earth if you weren't disturbed by her attack on Imane Khelif, though.

The way this response is giving desperation to justify going on with the Harry Potter reboot, clearly knowing its becoming more and more impossible to seperate the terf queen and Harry Potter since it's all she's got nowadays, her twitter is either the very once in blue moon Harry Potter tweet or just 24/7 hating on trans people. Like, you cannot tell me the, "and if you want to debate her, you can go on twitter", isn't the biggest sign HBO/WB are seeing her twitter account, because the way its basically pleading go and take hate for her out on her on twitter, not the latest unneeded reboot of something that's just being done so terf queen can have new kids to control after showing she's pissed the OG golden trio grew up and formed their own opinions that won't bigoted. Though also quite telling about HBO/WB that they willing to try and shrink down EVERYTHING JKR has done, including funding the group that's led to the supreme court ruling that's bringing harm to trans women and cis women even everywhere, down to 'personal opinions she's entitled too' Last I checked, personal opinions I'm entitled too isn't about real life people and their rights to exist, its about shit like if a movie is good or bad, but hey, thanks for telling us to avoid C.B Strike since based on research, that adapts her crime novels, including the ones with ableism, so thanks for that. Plus the idea that Harry Potter isn't secretly infused with anything is beyond laughable when a, so much questionable stuff has been found in those books and b, terf queen gonna take the chance to be transphobic at the nearest chance....granted its argued she already will have the chance given stuff people noticed about the character of Rita Skeeter so....

I think it's funny how the narrative escalated. first, they told us to not buy hp books/or to donate the books we already owned. then they started to shame any hp fan — and mind you, the 90% of the fandom are anti-jkr — to stop talking about the books. they also resorted to twisting every line, comma, and sentence of the books to fit their narrative.
Who was here for the Rita Skeeter debacle? When people started to say her character was trans and therefore jkr was showing her early signs of transphobia for making us hate her character. Whether Rita is or isn't trans, she is written to represent media harassment.
Then, when they saw that it wasn't working, it began the obsessive and controlling manner that they try to shame us for writing fanfics, doing fan arts, having discussions about the characters. I admit hp isnt that good magic/fantasy-wide but it's not the trash the haters think it is.
I don't need to throw my books away or abandon my hp fics to prove to someone behind the screen that I'm a Good person. In fact, no one needs to. And hear me out, they WON'T be satisfied. It's like they want us to suffer the consequences for a crime we didn't commit.
I'll continue to write my fics, support fanartists and follow this community, the same way I support real-life trans people in my country. If anyone feels uneasy to stay in the fandom, go. This isn't a prison after all.

pettigrew transitioning into a rat was not the take i was expecting this year. he's like a therian dream come true
If that post is real (it isn't. it can't be… or can it?), that'll be the fourth "x character is a trans allegory" take i've seen in total, and you know what this means? It means we finally have the Four Founders of Transgwarts: Voldemort (Transmonster), Rita Skeeter (Manlyhands), Snape (Vulturehat), and Wormtail (Ratwoman)
