Writing Software I Use & Recommend

Brainstorming:

Campfire: Great for organising your thoughts and making detailed character profiles, customised maps, worldbuilding, plot organisation—amongst other features. You can write your manuscript here and post it; and they have many helpful writing tips on their blog. Here's a general overview (customisable):

Notion: Although not conventionally a writing software, I find it immensely helpful for getting my thoughts sorted out. It's organised and easy to navigate, and the interface is manageable and uncluttered. (Keep in mind it's hard to cowrite on Notion—if you're planning to, I suggest making a separate Gmail account and both logging in with that.)

Microsoft Word, with spellcheck off, in Comic Sans (I saw the font thing somewhere and hate that it works). This is what I use when writing excerpts or spontaneous ideas, and it's actually quite effective, though I couldn't tell you why.

Writing/Editing:

Reedsy: The manuscript editors is organised, and lets you set writing goals, split chapters, and jot down notes for later. I highly recommend it for authors looking to self-publish—once you're done, you can format and export your book as an eBook or PDF; and you can connect with various editors and find the one that's right for your novel.

Scrivener: Although, unlike the others I've mentioned so far, this software isn't free, the formatting is great for making an outline, collecting any research and notes, and writing your manuscript.

How to avoid character inconsistency in your writing

Set your character boundaries:

What's the background?

What's your character's backstory?

What are their traits, and how do they portray them?

Know what keeps your characters motivated. (Are they reaching their goal?)

You can avoid quick shifting of scenes. Let your readers absorb the setting of the scene.

Ensure that their actions and decisions align with their development and growth.

Tip 1: Start your chapter with a scene or dialogue that comes back at the end, which helps maintain consistency.

Tip 2: Throughout the chapter avoid the fast pacing of the story, rather let the characters express themselves so that it's clear for the readers.

Consider how your characters react to situations that are hard to convey. (Do they feel nervous? Scared? Fearless?)

Dialogue writing is crucial in explaining your character's personality while writing a story.

This process requires lots of re-reading and writing, fixing character holes and rewriting character arcs.

We do this for free as a writer myself, author can spend hours writing with or without sleep (sometimes) so don’t rush them! Be patient, authors have life outside this app.

Adding plot twists in your story can make your reader more interested in your story and makes them want to follow and read more.

I have what may be a silly question for the fiction writers out there:

When you outline a story, what exactly does that look like?

Do you write things out on paper? Do you record a sentence or two for each major plot point in an outline document? More detail? A handy dandy infographic sheet?

I expect this may vary depending on the length and purpose of what you’re writing, but all answers are welcome. I’m particularly interested in the thoughts of people who are typically (or formerly) pantsers.

I’m hoping to stumble across a method that might work with my brain instead of against it.

I remember trying to use the tools provided to outline work in school and it was … dreadful. It felt like it broke or circumvented the mechanism by which I express creativity. If I had to know all that stuff in advance what was even the point in writing it??

HELLO WRITERS AND POETS OF TUMBLR! DO YOU WANT TO GET PUBLISHED IN A LITERARY JOURNAL?

For years I've been submitting to literary journals and gotten fed up with the process, so I've decided to start my own! It's called Goosewax! There is NO submission fee and NO long waiting period! Already published your work to Tumblr, Wattpad, Substack, etc? Not a problem. I have no issues with accepting previously published work!

Obviously this journal is brand new, so I can't claim any kind of prestige, but it is an official literary journal and your work would be considered published! This means that in all your cover letters from now on, you could list publication in a journal. You'd also be helping an independent journal get its feet off the ground.

There are very few rules to submit, but be sure to read them on the Submissions page linked below. Basically I accept short stories, creative nonfiction, and poetry all with a maximum of 5k words (no fanfiction please, only works that don't require knowledge of particular media). Since I don't have a backlog to get through right now, turnaround time will be lightning fast and if you choose to provide an email (optional) you'll hear back about your submission in a day or two. How To Write Mythical Creatures Without Sounding Redundant 

Mythical creatures are an essential part of literature. Whether it be fantasy, romance, or horror, they are often used as plot devices or notable characters in various different genres due to the familiarity of their myths, which can often draw the readers in. However, authors often forget about the liberty they possess when writing with mythical creatures and stick to a redundant narrative or tropes that can bore a reader. 

If you’re a writer working on a piece with mythical creatures, here are some tips on how to write mythical creatures without sounding redundant. 

Do Your Research 

Writing with a mythical creature is akin to writing with a character created by another person (like you would in fanfiction). While writers can choose to ignore any sort of backstory or myths established by the original creator, it’s essential to do your research in order to ensure your readers aren’t underwhelmed or annoyed by your inaccurate representation. 

Researching your mythical creatures also gives you the freedom to twist and turn their myths to your liking. For example, the Japanese Kitsune are foxes that possess paranormal abilities that increase as they get older and wiser. 

According to yōkai folklore, all foxes have the ability to shapeshift into human form. This backstory could be twisted and instead used as a werewolf–esque lore for a character. Maybe they’re an old Kitsune or ancient Inari and can shift between fox and human. 

If you never research the creatures you’re writing with, you run the risk of not knowing what you’re working with which could lead to accidentally offending the community the creature stems from or even backlash from your readers. 

It’s important to realise that unlike everything else about your book, mythical creatures weren’t created by you thus if you choose to use their name and mythology you should respect their stories and at the very least know what type of a creature you’re writing with. 

Combine Their Story With Yours 

There is a big difference between establishing a mythical creature’s backstory and completely committing to it while writing. Yes, you need to do your research and know your mythical creature’s back story, however, once you establish this you now have the creative freedom to use their lore and myths and essentially customise them to your story. 

Not every vampire shines like diamonds in the sunlight, but Edward certainly did. Thor definitely wasn’t blond or as benevolent in the original mythologies, but that doesn’t mean we don’t love Marvel’s Thor either. 

If we take my earlier example into account, technically, most foxes seen by humans are weak and possess only one tail which is why they cannot shapeshift, thus the werewolf lore wouldn’t really work for a Kitsune. However, as a writer, you’re given the creative liberty to combine their lore with your story in order to create your desired character. 

This ties into the importance of researching your mythical creatures. After all, how would you know what you are or aren’t changing if you never looked into those creatures? 

Establish A Reason, And Stick To It

It’s important to know why you decided to write with this mythical creature in the first place. What makes them the right choice for your book? What is their significance to your plot? Would you be able to attain the same result you need if the creature was swapped for a different one? 

Once you have established a concrete reason for why you want to write with this mythical creature, go on to see how this will tie into your plot. Maybe your side character is secretly a vampire which helps the main character since they won’t be wounded in battle easily and can go undercover to spy on the antagonists. 

You need to know how your mythical creature’s background benefits your plot. And if it doesn’t, then maybe consider why you need to use this mythical creature in the first place. 

Know Where You’re Going 

You need to know where your mythical creature is going to end up at the end of your book so that you can leverage their mythology to your advantage. Using the previous example, your vampire could nearly go back to the protagonist with the important information but then get a stake in their heart and cloned by a Kitsune to give the antagonists the upper hand. 

You can also use their lore as plot devices or easter eggs to move your plot along. A Kirin could be used to show the birth of a new era at the start of the book but be found dead near the end to symbolise the beginning of a war. They don’t necessarily have to be mentioned at any other point in your book, but the mythological significance of such a moment would help convey your message for you. 

If you are unsure where your mythical creature will end up at the end of your book, you could take a look at how their story ended in their lore. This would especially work well for characters such as gods or cacodemons.

seeing other writers/mutuals who are so skilled at what they do talk about not getting support in their sfw, fluff and angst fics just piss me the fuck off, i'm genuinely so heated at the amount of old and new writers struggling because of new tumblr users

ik a lot of you readers like to read our smut fics/porn fics, but those writers, also talking abt only getting likes, instead of reblogs n interactions from those types of works as well is just so depressing that im starting to have this growing idea of what some to most readers are in tumblr

i've seen so much amazing fics, nsfw or sfw have over almost 9k interactions, then i look to the reblogs count and see only a whopping 500 or so like THE FUCK? SCUSE ME? WHAT THE FUCK IS THAT RATIO?

if you're apart of the "ooh! i genuinely like this!" then only press like—thank you, truly. we're glad you like our work, to gain your interest and your silent support, but i want to inform you simply liking doesn't help us in a technical sense, it doesn't help our blog, our reach, it doesn't help our blog grow.

and if you're one of the blogs who only likes, i genuinely don't know what's so trifling and difficult about reblogging and adding the pre-made tags for you to spam and get it over with. i do it and its so, so fucking easy.

REBLOGS are so, so fucking relieving for us, and that relief has been addictive to those starved from support, especially to writers who are struggling OUTSIDE of their work/hobby/blog.

REBLOGS in a literal sense, mean so much more to us than likes. especially with your damn thoughts. the mere thought of taking your time into writing something FOR US and OUR CREATION is so fucking motivating, every positive input from you will be CHERISHED no matter what.

and the fact we have to beg for it, to speak out about it as of late...

god, i remember in full detail the day where i wrote my first story, it had only 200 interactions max, and most of them were only likes and a few reblogs, but my inbox was full of positivity, mixed in with a few shitty ones, but i pressed on because of SAID INTERACTIONS AND MY LOVE FOR WRITING.

to my mutuals and other writers; i fucking love you and your stories so much, sfw or not, the writing community has done so much for me mentally, and lots of fics have been healing me. god its my first time releasing such emotions into this blog, but yea, ive just had it from the amount of turmoil ppl have been causing into all of you, outside tumblr or not.
